The 10 Best Bollywood Movies of 2021
It was only after the state government of Maharashtra announced the opening of cinema halls on October 22, 2021 that theatrical release announcements for some of the most anticipated, big-budget Bollywood movies started to roll in one after another. After all, its capital city Mumbai is home to the Hindi film industry. While the rest of the country had already opened theaters earlier in 2021, some at full capacity, Maharashtra allowed a half-capacity opening, noting the substantial decline in COVID spread across the country. Nevertheless, the trend of Hindi films releasing on streaming platforms isn’t going away. So 2021 still offered up a wide range of films to check out, at the theater or at home. We narrowed down the best Bollywood movies of 2021.
Here are our picks for the 10 best Bollywood movies of 2021:
Although there’s now a wariness about watching Netflix India anthology films because they prove to be a mixed bag, there are a few reasons to check Ajeeb Daastaans out. The first one being the chapter starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Aditi Rao Hydari called Geeli Puchi. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, a filmmaker who comes from a Dalit (formerly untouchable) background and has spoken about the lack of Dalit representation in Indian cinema, it tells the story of an evolving friendship between two women. Their complicated relationship addresses issues of caste, class and sexuality with an assured hand. Sharma is brilliant as always and Hydari gets to add some nuance to the pretty paramour roles she’s known for. Ankahi is an interesting take on the well-worn narrative of a fraying marriage, using deafness as a plot and craft device. The result is touching in parts—however, the lack of dialogue also means there’s occasional overwrought acting.
When Bunty Aur Babli came out in 2005, there was a freshness in the pairing of Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee, two A-list actors playing small-time con artists who go bigger with each fraud they manage to pull off. There was smart writing, lilting songs and genuine chemistry between Mukherjee and Bachchan that gave the movie a deft touch. This sequel tries to recreate that magic. Saif Ali Khan replaces Bachchan as Bunty, but Mukherjee reprises her role as the original Babli. The two have been living a retired life, giving up their misadventures as scam artists. Turns out there is a new con artist duo in town, and they are threatening Bunty and Babli’s legacy. The two conning duos go head to head. The sequel doesn’t quite match the original’s magic, although the younger Bunty and Babli pair (Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh) show some sparkle.
Hindi cinema is taking slow steps in creating narratives around the LGBTQ+ community, which can be seen as a step towards inclusion. You could call Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui another one of those steps, despite the many problems it presents. Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a beefed-up gym owner, with a bunch of gym rat friends and a meddlesome family. One day, Zumba instructor Manvi (Vaani Kapoor) saunters into his gym and life. Sparks fly, things get hot and heavy real fast. Except, Manvi is a trans woman, who has had sex reassignment surgery. This revelation has Manu go through a series of crises, while educating the audience about the challenges that Manvi has had to face. There are several issues to raise about Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui : Kapoor is a cis actor playing a trans character; while the movie show some awareness of trans issues, there are also several cringeworthy moments serving stereotypical ideas about queer identity; and, in the end, the movie uses Manvi’s story for Manu’s personal growth. As far as queer representation in Hindi movies go, it would be great to see more movies in the future where queer characters can simply exist, and not require their identity to drive the plot.
Haseen Dillruba is played out as a pulpy crime thriller, whose lens is firmly trained on lead actress Taapsee Pannu playing Rani, a newly married woman trying to figure her place in her husband’s home. However, its charm lies in following the supporting characters who play her in-laws. Rani marries Rishabh because he seems like a nice-enough guy, especially when the guy she was dating didn’t seem to be interested in a long-term commitment. The naïve Rishabh marries Rani, despite his mother’s protestations that Rani is too smart for him, because he’s smitten. Except it takes more than passing fancy to maintain a marriage, as Rani and Rishabh find out soon after the wedding is over. Throw in a beefcake distant relative, and the relationship becomes toxic. Someone dies. Who it is and how it happened forms the basis of the plot. While the film is entertaining enough, and some might see the plot twist from a mile away, the standout performances by the actors playing Rishabh’s parents add to the humor.
This is a bit of a cheat two-fer-one pick, especially since Pagglait released two months after Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi . However, both stories covered similar ground. (There was also some controversy around the two similarly themed films, and whose idea may have come first—but both are distinct in their own way, and should be watched for their own merits.) The common factor in both films is the gathering of family to mourn the loss of a loved one. In the case of Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi , it’s the patriarch of a family; while in Pagglait , it’s the young son. You could call Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi an ensemble production, relying on a whole cast of formidable character actors. It’s the directorial debut of Seema Pahwa, a theatre/TV/film stalwart, known for her performances in recent films such as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Bareilly Ki Barfi . Pagglait , meanwhile, is focused on the young widow, whose husband dies just five months after the marriage. Her parents and in-laws, extended family and best friend gather to mourn the loss and figure out next steps. There’s humor and pathos in both families as relationships are negotiated.
A much anticipated film by critically acclaimed director Dibakar Banerjee ( Khosla Ka Ghosla , Love Sex Aur Dhoka , Shanghai ), Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar has been described as a black comedy—which is familiar terrain for Banerjee. Expectations are challenged right from their names: The brooding and boorish Arjun Kapoor is Pinky, a cop temporarily relieved from duty; Parineeti Chopra is Sandeep, a polished banker who keeps her cards close to her chest. Pinky is tasked with kidnapping Sandeep, but plans go awry and both of them end up on the run. Along the way, sensibilities on class, gender, privilege and the urban-rural divide are challenged.
You’d be forgiven if you thought that this was a Hindi nature documentary masquerading as a fiction film. Amit Masurkar’s previous film Newton was a biting satire on Indian democracy by examining the election process in a remote village. In Sherni , he shows us the copious amount of research he’s done into wildlife conservation and tiger poaching—which can be tedious at times. Nevertheless, it was a welcome change to see Vidya Balan play a lead role with understated heft, as the forest officer in charge of a rural area prone to tiger attacks. While dealing with nature, she also has to deal with an office full of inept or corrupt colleagues and superiors, and manage her relationship with her husband mostly via video chat. There are allies in the field and academia, however. Who triumphs in the end: Man or nature? There are no easy answers.
Rohit Shetty has fine-tuned his formula of car chases and cop drama through previous movies Singham and Simmba . A remake of a 2011 Tamil film, Singham starred Ajay Devgn in the role of an honest cop, who regularly breaks the law in order to uphold it. The motto of Shetty’s films can be summed up as such: Loha lohe ko kaat-ta hai (loosely translated, iron cuts iron). Given the amount of corruption in the police force, justice is usually meted by bending the rules or downright ignoring them. Cops in Shetty’s universe would laugh uproariously at accusations of police brutality. Throw in some thrilling car chases, meme-worthy dialogue, as well as a soupcon of misogyny—you have a winning formula. Shetty reprised the same idea in Singham Returns (2014) and then Simmba (2018), switching out the lead role to actor Ranveer Singh, who plays a corrupt cop on a mission with unabashed glee in the latter film. The stakes are even higher in Sooryavanshi with Akshay Kumar now in the titular role, fighting Islamic terrorism. Stereotypes abound, the chase scenes more and more elaborate, and the dialogue is bombastic.
When she isn’t rabble-rousing on Twitter, Kangana Ranaut can be a good actress. Occasionally. She’s the main reason to watch Thalaivii , a biopic of the intriguing Tamil film star turned politician Jayalalitha. Is it problematic that a North Indian actress who can’t speak Tamil played such an iconic role? Ranaut would likely not even dignify that question with an answer. However, there are many reasons why she’s perfect for the role that required her to maintain a sense of aloof dignity and vulnerability. Thalaivii tells the story of the rise of an ingenue, who attaches herself to charismatic actor-turned-politician MGR (Arvind Swamy) and then takes on his mantle, much to the chagrin of MGR loyalists. Those expecting a factual representation will be disappointed. This evocation of the late ‘70s era of politics in the southern state of Tamil Nadu leading up to recent times is more a hagiography than a critical account.
Hindi cinema doesn’t do full justice to sports movies unless they’re about cricket. Even then, Bollywood’s scorecard on this front has been pretty dismal. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Toofaan is a mediocre attempt for a film set in the boxing ring that also addresses religious and class differences. Aziz is a small-time gangster turned boxer, who aspires to rise in the boxing ranks. To do so, he needs to train with Narayan Prabhu (Paresh Rawal), whom everyone calls Nana. Aziz is Muslim, Nana is Hindu and this film is set in contemporary India—so Nana doesn’t take kindly to Aziz romancing his daughter Ananya. Family and sports drama ensues. If you really want to see a contemporary boxing film that lands several punches, you’d be better served watching Sarpatta Parambarai , a Tamil period piece that addresses caste issues while delivering some knockout performances.

The 5 Best Indian Films of 2022 That Weren’t RRR
One of the year’s biggest entertainment stories was RRR — or Rise. Roar. Revolt. — S.S. Rajamouli’s enrapturing Tollywood epic, which has broken through a western barrier that seemed impenetrable for Indian films, becoming a critical and commercial hit. A quintessential theatrical experience between its audacious dance number and raucous scenes of animal mauling, the Telugu-language period musical has also found global success online following its surprise streaming release in May via its Hindi dub on Netflix (and, to a lesser degree, its original version on the Indian streaming service Zee5 ). For many viewers outside South Asia, it was their first experience with an Indian movie of any kind, potentially opening the door to a wider exploration of the world’s largest film industry.
India’s nearly 2,000 annual productions are spread across several regional and language-specific subindustries. The Hindi-language Bollywood was the unprecedented financial leader until recently , when it was overtaken by industries in the nation’s south thanks in part to the dual Telugu and Tamil releases of Rajamouli’s own Baahubali duology (also available on Netflix ). But while RRR typifies what some of the Indian mainstream has on tap — violent bombast, banger tunes, emotional sincerity, and sometimes-uncomfortable jingoism — this year has played host to a wide variety of great Indian pictures. Some play in the same sandbox as RRR , though they express their splendor and action in different modes. Others depart significantly in their style and politics, acting almost as counterweights to the perception of Indian films in the West as colorful, spectacle-first musical melodramas.
Of course, none of these movies were made with the express intent of changing that perception (even RRR wasn’t created with western viewers in mind), but since the curiosity now exists, a quick scroll through your chosen streaming service will likely turn up a litany of Indian movies you may not have noticed before. Five of the year’s best are now streaming on various platforms, and they each represent wildly different facets of Indian filmmaking from ongoing independent movements to mainstream sister industries with their own lengthy histories of stars and styles.
Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj Language: Tamil
Vikram is a prime example of how even star-driven, over-the-top extravaganzas can feel nothing like RRR . The second entry in director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s shared black-ops universe — though you don’t need to have seen predecessor Kaithi to keep up — it’s a seedy action spectacle led by 68-year-old superstar Kamal Haasan, who plays an intriguing dual role of sorts (the less revealed beforehand, the better). With his signature buttery-smooth bravado in tow, he leads a string of conceptually original action scenes that explode Vikram ’s crime-drama plot from within.
Haasan’s mysterious character crosses paths with black-ops officer Agent Amar (Fahadh Faasil), whose covert unit skirts the law in pursuit of drug kingpin Sandhanam (played by Vijay Sethupathi, one of the world’s most magnetic character actors in an especially zany role). However, this seemingly straightforward genre romp collides headfirst with a parallel tale of a masked, militarized cult seeking to wipe out corruption before all hell breaks loose in a series of tightly wound, white-knuckle set pieces. Cinematographer Girish Gangadharan’s camera crafts a lurid atmosphere as it follows each man down dark corridors and murky moral paths in one of the most ludicrously enjoyable movies of 2022.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Language: Hindi
Starring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn (who also appear in RRR ), Gangubai Kathiawadi is the latest period musical from the purveyor of modern Bollywood’s most visually intoxicating works, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose stylized expressionism lends credence to the idea that places can be characters, too. A loose biopic based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai , it follows a young girl sold into prostitution, Ganga (Bhatt), and her subsequent 1960s rise to crime-boss madame and, eventually, pro–sex work politician.
Set in an ornate, heightened red-light district, it’s the kind of operatic character piece at which Bhatt excels, centered on a tough-as-nails woman with concealed vulnerabilities. Devgn, despite having a smaller role as a local gangster who takes Ganga under his wing, forms a vital part of the feminist credo of the film, which attempts to normalize and even valorize sex work — often demonized by Indian society — with surprising appeals to mainstream sensibilities (in the vein of Bollywood’s “social issues” filmmaking). Rather than trying to eke out a new place for sex workers in conservative society, it makes the convincing case that they are already a vital fixture.
Director: Achal Mishra Language: Maithili
Achal Mishra’s photography background seeps into each frame of Dhuin , his restrained, 50-minute filmic novella about a young stage actor during the pandemic. An emerging master of composition, Mishra’s carefully considered 4:3 vistas draw particular focus to unspoken social dynamics as protagonist Pankaj (Abhinav Jha) absorbs the quiet indignities often foisted upon young artists in a utilitarian world and even dishes them out himself on occasion.
A frigid mist sets in over the small town of Darbhanga. Soon, Pankaj’s dreams of moving to Mumbai turn similarly foggy, torn between his duty toward his elderly father — a worker displaced by COVID, a story Mishra wove from the struggles of an actor on his previous film, Gamak Ghar — and Pankaj’s realizations of his own artistic shortcomings the more he compares himself with his peers. Even in group scenes, Mishra’s camera rarely averts its gaze from Jha’s subtle performance, resulting in a quiet portrait of insecurity and the fragility of dreams beset by harsh realities.
Director: Nagraj Manjule Language: Hindi
One of the premier voices in Marathi-language cinema, Nagraj Manjule’s Bollywood breakout is a fitting biopic to watch in a World Cup year. Starring screen legend Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay Borade (based on Slum Soccer founder Vijay Barse), Jhund brings a unique flair to the Indian sports drama and leaves you wishing you could spend more time with its characters even after three whole hours.
With an ensemble of newcomers scouted from actual slums — and a few regulars from Manjule’s previous films, Fandry and Sairat — it’s led by a fiery first-time performance from Ankush Gedam as a listless youth who battles not only perception (of caste and economic circumstance) but the legal limits of personhood in a world where something as fundamental as identity requires money and paper. Manjule and cinematographer Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti imbue each movement with enormity — practically every second shot in the opening act is a dolly zoom — and each dialogue exchange with intimacy, building a stylish, propulsive, and resonant tale of frustrations channeled through sport.
A Night of Knowing Nothing
Director: Payal Kapadia Language: Bengali, Hindi
Ideologically and aesthetically, Payal Kapadia’s debut feature is the polar opposite of RRR , though it’s just as (if not more) exacting in its use of cinematic imagery. A haunting piece of docu-fiction, it weaves a dreamlike narrative about lost film reels found at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India — the director’s alma mater — discovered alongside love letters written by an anonymous student. As these mournful notes are read aloud, Kapadia combines this story with real footage of student protest and resistance against Narendra Modi’s right-wing Hindu government, revealing a lucid collage of life in modern India.
A tapestry born of light and physical texture (its digital impersonation of 16-mm. film grain is nothing short of magical), A Night of Knowing Nothing is a rousing example of cinema as activism and an avenue to confronting the deep, unavoidable entanglements between the personal and the political.

Sarfira Review:
Mirzapur 3 Review:

Kalki
Kalki First Review:

MOVIE REVIEW NEWS
Minmini movie review: Halitha Shameem charts a beautiful but bumpy ride to our hearts
Minmini review: Halitha Shameem’s ambitious film Minmini manages to flutter its wings due to convincing performances, and a brilliant technical team.
Super Zindagi movie review: The Dhyan Sreenivasan-starrer is one of those films that leaves you with the impression that the makers were super intrigued by a premise but had no idea how to turn it into a full-fledged feature film script.
Borderlands movie review: Eli Roth adaptation of a video game is just too generic, too familiar, too incapable of raising either laughs or emotions.
Andhagan Movie Review: Director Thiagarajan, supported by a convincing ensemble, delivers a film that acts as a comeback vehicle for Prashanth, and a showreel for Simran, who remind us why they are still top-tier talent
Adios Amigo movie review: The major struggle of Nahas Nazar's Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu-starrer is that it lacks a compelling story to keep viewers engaged. However, Adios Amigo avoids being dull solely due to the performances of Suraj and Asif.
Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba movie review: The trio of Taapsee Pannu as the scheming Rani, Vikrant Massey who valiantly stays the course for his one true love, and Sunny Kaushal as ‘mar-mitne-wala-aashiq’, are all spot on.
It Ends With Us movie review: Blake Lively's film is so concentrated on the romances and the sex that the subject of domestic abuse is never treated with any amount of complexity.
The Instigators movie review: Matt Damon and Casey Affleck overcompensate for director Doug Liman's low-energy plotting in Apple's new heist-comedy film.
Mothers’ Instinct is almost too sun-bathed pastel and virginal vanilla to get the hands of its two women dirty. However, in their performances, Chastain and Hathaway pack enough switches to keep it interesting.
A film on a silent assassin coming to a new town and finding a home with them only to be uprooted by revenge-hungry antagonists is a trope done to death, and Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan needed more smarts in the writing and a stronger emotional anchor.
Trap movie review: Trap is quite different from a Shyamalan – and many a serial killer – film, in revealing right at the beginning the killer. That is a good thing in the case of Shyamalan, whose films have lately seemed like a bag of unwieldy, overstuffed tricks.
Modern Masters review: A deeper analysis would have been useful to set him in the context of the industry he works in, as well as how the mega success of RRR will impact India’s cinematic standing in the world.
Nanban Oruvan Vantha Piragu movie review: This film is like going on a trip down memory lane, without anyone rushing us to reach our destination. The film talks about the importance of the journey, and how each path finds its own torchbearers when it has to
Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha movie review: Ajay Devgn-Tabu film tries to be the kind of ‘mature’ romance that Bollywood rarely attempts, but doesn't have the courage or conviction, or the tools, to make it’s own version of a bitter-sweet Bridges of Madison County.
Ulajh movie review: The lead, played by Janhvi Kapoor, is upped at the expense of the other characters, who feel underwritten, underserving the film.
Mountain Queen - The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa movie review: A grand achievement in documentary filmmaking, the crowd-pleasing film recounts the many achievements of Nepal's most celebrated female climber.
Boat Movie review: Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea, and Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men, Chimbudeven’s latest is a one-trick pony that gets tired too early into the journey
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare movie review: Guy Ritchie returns to the world of guns, geezers, and grossly overcomplicated plots in a new action-comedy that plays like Quentin Tarantino's version of The Guns of Navarone.
Secret movie review: The Dhyan Sreenivasan-starrer is essentially a two-hour motivational seminar aimed at boosting self-confidence, which writer-director SN Swamy suggests might delay death — though it's unclear how.
Devadoothan movie review: Once the Sibi Malayil directorial ended, one question stayed with me -- where did this Mohanlal, whose soul could merge with that of his movie and fuse into one, go? Will he ever return? I haven't stopped wondering since.
Raayan movie review: Dhanush, the actor and director, stands tall in a film powered by AR Rahman’s brilliant music, and top-notch performances only to fall just short of realising its potential.
Bloody Ishq movie review: Just the name should have been enough warning -- the director who gave us Ghulam and the Raaz franchise, has been on a downward spiral for a while now.
Deadpool and Wolverine movie review: Deadpool and Wolverine doesn’t want to be taken seriously, but it puts all its money, muscle and, because it's Deadpool, into ensuring that you damn well do.
Treasure movie review: This Lena Dunham film is either trying too hard to show how horror of this kind can alter one’s world forever, or not trying hard enough -- in an inexplicable amount of unsubtitled Polish.
Bad Newz movie review: If Bad Newz had stuck to its comedic guns, without resorting to the weepy saccharine bits which take over in the second half, it would have been gold.
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Belgrade to rally against a government plan to allow lithium mining in a farming valley. President Vucic accused Western powers of plotting a coup to oust him, while the government and state-controlled media have launched a campaign against the protest.

'Borderlands' Review: Cate Blanchett's film is a snooze-fest
'Borderlands' doesn't make the best use of its fabulous actors. The film relies on a borrowed story, which looks like the worst combination of various superhero movies that we have seen multiple times.

'Minmini' Review: Halitha Shameem's film lacks depth
Director Halitha Shameem's 'Minmini', starring Praveen Kishore, Gaurav Kaalai and Esther Anil, is a film that talks about survivor's guilt. The film needed more depth and appeared stagnant, says our review.

Released- Fri Aug 02, 2024
'Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan' Movie Review: Director Vijay Milton's film, starring Vijay Antony, Daali Dhananjay and Sarathkumar is a tedious watch. The film is a wasted opportunity.
Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha review: Ajay Devgn-Tabu's love story needed some 'dum'
Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha movie review: Neeraj Pandey lets down the screen presence of Ajay Devgn and Tabu, who have long been the redeeming factors in many bad movies.
Ulajh Review: Janhvi Kapoor film gets entangled in its effort to build intrigue
Director Sudhanshu Saria's 'Ulajh', starring Janhvi Kapoor, Gulshan Devaiah and Roshan Mathew, is a spy thriller with some shortcomings. Red our review.

'Raayan' Movie Review: Dhanush's 50th film is riveting. Well, almost
'Raayan' Movie Review: Dhanush donned the hat of director, actor and writer for his 50th film. The revenge thriller is riveting, but not without flaws.
Deadpool and Wolverine Review: A Marvel revival with Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman
Deadpool and Wolverine Review: The Shawn Levy film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is all about witty dialogues and bromance. The meta-writing is its asset.
'Immaculate' Review: Sydney Sweeney is the best part about this film
Released- Fri Jul 19, 2024
Sydney Sweeney-starrer 'Immaculate' is now streaming on Prime Video. Planning to watch it? Read our review of the film first.
Bad Newz Review: Vicky Kaushal is the only good news here
Bad Newz Movie Review: The Vicky Kaushal film resembles an Instagram filter that loses its sheen after first use. The surface is shimmery and looks glossy, but there is no material to sink your teeth into.
'Twisters' Review: Glen Powell's film is high on thrill, low on emotions
Glen Powell's 'Twisters' offers high-octane thrills but falls short on emotional depth. The film releases in theatres on July 19.
'Indian 2' Review: Kamal Haasan's film is an emotionless social commentary
Released- Fri Jul 12, 2024
'Indian 2' Review: Director Shankar's sequel to the 1996 hit film is an uninteresting commentary on worldly issues that are addressed in countless other films. Underneath the mess lies a promising idea, which is barely explored.

Since its inception in the early-20th Century, Bollywood has gradually evolved into one of the world’s largest film industries. The 1990s marked a surge in the global reach of Bollywood films, with movies such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Lagaan (2000) receiving widespread acclaim. In this present era, Bollywood sustains its universal appeal by delivering entertaining movies, all made accessible through popular streaming platforms like Prime Video, Max, and especially Netflix .
There are hundreds of Bollywood movies on Netflix, ranging from horror to drama and, of course, comedy to romance, all of which cater to different tastes. While this list may not capture everyone’s favorite Bollywood movies on the platform, it inherently serves as a solid starting point for enthusiasts and for Bollywood beginners alike to explore both timeless classic and recent releases of exceptional quality. Here are 20 of the finest Bollywood movies on Netflix that you definitely shouldn’t miss.
20 Qala (2022)
Qala is a 2022 Netflix original psychological drama about the fraught relationship between a mother and daughter. Written and directed by Anvita Dutt, the story follows the titular Qala (Tripti Dimri), who's a singer rising up the ranks in the music industry. However, she suffers from crippling self-doubt, spurred by the pressures of the industry and, more than anything, her domineering mother, Urmila (Swastika Mukherjee).
What Makes It Great
Qala is easily one of the most visually striking films on this list, which is saying something considering Bollywood's reputation for spectacle. And yet, there's an interesting contrast to how poignant and painful it is to watch Qala push through her inner demons in order to fulfill her dreams. Dimri and Mukherjee turn in fantastic performances, and the film as a whole is lifted by its phenomenal soundtrack.
19 Mimi (2021)
Directed by Laxman Utekar, this Bollywood comedy features Kriti Sanon in the titular role, as a young aspiring actress who reluctantly becomes a surrogate mother for an American couple. The plot takes a twist when they decide against proceeding with the pregnancy, leaving Mimi in a challenging situation.
Mimi goes beyond mere humor to serve social commentary about issues of surrogacy, adding emotional depth for ultimate resonance. For its engaging storyline, relevant themes, superb dialogues, and strong performances, the film has received positive reviews, with many commending Sanon for her compelling performance. Aside from its noteworthy performances and deep messages, it also delivers melodious and soulful music to enhance the overall viewing experience.
18 Asoka (2001)

Asoka stands as a perfect example of a Bollywood movie that offers more than song and dance. Boasting elaborate costumes, captivating visuals, powerful performances, and a romantic story steeped in historical richness, the film encompasses all the elements of an engaging historical spectacle. Director Santosh Sivan's vivid vision plays a pivotal role in crafting a well-layered and visually stunning movie. Through its cinematography, the movie breathes life into 3rd-Century India, capturing its beauty and essence. The impeccable performances of the actors contribute significantly to the film’s legendary status.
17 OMG 2 (2023)
Similarly to other film industries, Bollywood is evolving to address contemporary issues. In OMG 2 , issues of sex education and societal hypocrisy are explored through the story of Kanti, a civilian who takes his son’s school to court after his son is expelled for engaging in self-gratifying sexual activity that went viral.
On the surface, OMG 2 may seem like any other light-hearted Netflix court drama, but, underneath, it’s all about highlighting the importance of sex education and the roles parents and social institutions must play in facilitating it. Thanks to the exceptional performances of Pankaj Tripathi, Akshay Kumar, and the rest of the cast, the movie manages to get its message across while keeping things entertaining. With a mix of emotional, thoughtful, and humorous scenes, anchored by powerful dialogue, this film will leave many in awe, in tears, and, of course, in fits of laughter.
16 Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue (2023)
With Akshay Kumar in the lead role as Jaswant Sing Gill, Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue presents a captivating portrayal of the 1989 Raniganj coal mine disaster. Filled with suspense and emotional resonance, this film chronicles Jaswan's heroic mission of rescuing 65 trapped miners.
This Bollywood movie's greatness lies in its inspirational tale about the indomitable spirit of humanity, with stellar performances by Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, and Ravi Kishan enhancing its entertainment value. The film maintains a tense atmosphere and intriguing plot throughout as characters race against time to save lives. The blend of action, history, tension, and drama ensures an engaging viewing experience, making it a must-watch on Netflix, particularly for lovers of thriller stories based on true events.

With a combination of powerful performances, memorable music, an emotional storyline, and Nikhil Advani’s expert direction, Kal Ho Naa Ho is an unforgettable Indian movie that shouldn't be missed by Netflix subscribers. The inclusion of an iconic soundtrack further enhances its lasting appeal.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba movie review: Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey film lacks originality, leaves you unsatisfied
Phir aayi hasseen dillruba movie review: taapsee pannu has lost the spunk which fueled the first film, in this one, co starring vikrant massey and sunny kaushal.
Ek haseena thi, ek deewana tha--This iconic song from a now iconic film is used to pretty brilliant effect in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba as it begins. The spectacular fall in coherence which follows however, will become iconic too. I am still reeling from the ludicrous storyline of this film which takes the words ‘artistic liberty’ to a new level. And that is not necessarily always a good thing. (Also Read | Taapsee Pannu on Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, Khel Khel Mein releasing in her birthday month )
We meet Rani Saxena ( Taapsee Pannu ) again, a femme fatale who has men falling over her, and her husband, Rishabh Saxena (Vikrant Massey), who she is presumed to have murdered (we are shown a flashback of what happened in the first film, which is quite clever). But of course, there’s a police officer who won’t let the case close! How original. Full marks to writer Kanika Dhillon? You be the judge.
Rani, a widow now for the world, has another man entering her life, Abhimanyu (played by Sunny Kaushal), for whom it's love at first sight. He’s that guy next door who asks her out for a movie and books the entire theatre. And when she forgets her beauty parlour stuff at home, he runs all the way behind her rickshaw just to hand it to her. But everything isn’t as it seems.
Rishu and Rani are all set to run away to Thailand in one month as suspicion grows about what happened to the deceased Neel Tripathi, played by Harshvardhan Rane in the first film. But with the tough cop (played by Jimmy Sheirgill, Neel’s chacha) close on their heels, will they be able to escape? Is Rishu able to hide from the world?
Film is missing originality
Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba begins on a promising note, trying to be a commentary on women taking charge of their desires. Rani hints to Rishu (as they communicate via earphones in public) 'there’s no one at home today'. Another female character wants Rishu to fulfill her sexual desires atleast if he doesn’t want to love.
But all this gets lost amidst the fluff that follows. As it progresses, we are promised a satisfying conclusion- pun intended- but what’s missing is the big O, originality. There’s nothing in here we haven’t seen in the first film already. Characters communicate with each other through poetic scrawls on public walls, meet each other frequently even as the police are keeping a watch, and they still don’t get caught. The makers of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba rely completely on the audience’s suspension of disbelief, and logic goes out of the window. The film dips in the second half, and by the time the reveal comes, you just don’t care. How can you make a suspense thriller and have such loose ends?
And let’s not even talk about the hurried 'anti-climax'. A climax is defined as the most exciting part of something, here it’s anything but that. Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’s makers and writers seem to have thrown an open invitation to the makers of the Mission Impossible franchise--beat this.
Sunny, Taapsee, Vikrant performance report card
As for the performances, the only person with a decent character arc here is Sunny Kaushal as Abhimanyu. Taapsee Pannu, who is the titular haseena, has lost the spunk which fueled the first film, in this one. Vikrant Massey ’s character has nothing else to do or say, than snarl when somebody dares question his love. Jimmy Sheirgill is utterly wasted.
The fictional Pandit Ji’s romantic thriller novels are Holy Bible for all characters in this, much like the first film. At one point, in the anti-climax, a character remarks, ‘Humne samajhdaari bauhaut peeche chhod di hai Pandit ji ke shagird ban ke.' After watching this misfire of a film, I couldn't agree more.

A ‘Borderlands’ Fan Regretfully Reviews The ‘Borderlands’ Movie
Borderlands
I’m not sure there’s a way to make a good Borderlands movie. And this is certainly not it.
Given that it’s being rated as one of the worst video game adaptations ever in a sea of bad video game adaptations, most from a decade or more ago, I had to see Borderlands for myself. It is not 2005-era Uwe Boll bad, and yet it is also not good at all. To talk about it, you should know up front that I’m someone with hundreds and hundreds of hours across three games and a pre-sequel, and that’s the perspective I’m coming from.
This is neither a good Borderlands movie or nor a good movie, period. It feels like Gearbox and Eli Roth tried to split the difference here, making a mass-appeal PG-13 action film but gesturing vaguely at the games to try to get that crowd to show up too.
But the end result is throwing the Borderlands games at a wall, watching them shatter, and gluing back together a handful of mildly recognizable pieces. Spoilers follow, though not if you’ve played the games or even know the basics.
Did you think casting was going to be a problem? Casting is a problem. In some instances it’s actually…okay. I think the single best-cast character is Marcus, and all of his 90 seconds of screentime. Krieg just has to look like Krieg and say Krieg things like “I’m gonna lick your spine!” and he does that. I do think Young Gamora/Young Ahsoka Ariana Greenblatt’s promising career will survive this, and she would be an okay Tina with a much better script. Weirdly, I actually kind of…liked Jack Black’s Claptrap? He was genuinely funny at times, and arguably more so than the games.
But Lilith and Roland, man, what were they thinking? Roland is Kevin Hart, who is of course not the stoic, burly soldier he should be, he is Kevin Hart, perhaps acting 20% less Kevin Hart-ish than usual, but only that. And just physically he is, no exaggeration, only slightly taller than Greenblatt’s Tina and the film does nothing to pretend otherwise.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett is absolutely the most baffling casting here as Lilith. I have no idea how they got the two-time Oscar winner other than perhaps boredom on her part and an inexplicable desire to recreate her character’s trajectory in Tar. But as a game-player, the age-gap from her to OG Lilith is distracting. And not just as a casting decision, but from a story perspective too. The movie has Tannis and Moxxi telling her about their time with her mother and remembering her as an eight year old. Jamie Lee Curtis is 65, ten years older than Blanchette’s 55. Gina Gershon is 62. It’s just goofy.
The script does not resemble any Borderlands game at all, other than it’s vaguely about finding Pandora’s vault. They make the thrust of the story an off-canon rewriting of Tina into being some Atlas-made clone using Eridian DNA to open the vault as a “chosen one,” her only connection to her original character being her bunny ears and saying things like “dealio.”
Tina is supposed to be the prophecies “Daughter of the Eridia,” but of course we all know where this is going. Lilith begins the movie without Siren powers. You will know from about twenty minutes in that she, not Tina, is the chosen one in question and gets those Siren powers at the very end. Flame on. The vault opening ends up being nothing but floaty cubes and tentacles, a hint of a boss fight from the games with no corresponding fight in the film.
The script is not good, but neither is the action. This is what I’ll now be calling “Rebel Moon Syndrome” where a PG-13 cut neuters the action of something that clearly should be R-rated. The gore-soaked, Mature-rated games give way to bullets pinging off armor and people falling over. Again, I think they were going for box office boosting here with the lower age rating, but it hurts the film. Not that gory action would have saved it, but it would have been better than what we got in this cut.
This project feels like pure ego. Look at these huge stars we got to play these characters even if they make no sense! Borderlands fans will show up no matter what even if the story and characters are way different! We’re launching the Borderlands cinematic universe to expand beyond those pesky gamers!
This will die here. Alone. No more movies. Nothing like this should be attempted again. In some other world I can see a cool animated Borderlands series possibly having worked on Netflix. But whatever A-list blockbuster this was supposed to be, despite a few brief moments where it works, it overwhelmingly does not, and it actually makes me concerned about Borderlands 4, if this is the kind of thing the studio thinks is good now.

Now streaming on:
It’s hard to imagine that this summer will see a better crowd-pleaser than “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” a nostalgic Hong Kong action spectacular featuring the year’s most thrilling action filmmaking. Unbound by physics or any sense of psychological realism, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” is also probably the best comic book adaptation you’ll see this year, featuring a murderer’s row of Hong Kong stars like Louis Koo , Aaron Kwok and Sammo Hung , and featuring the sort of intricate maximalist production design that puts most other blockbusters to shame.
On its face, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” is a conventional us-against-them crime saga about Chan Lok-kwun ( Raymond Lam ), a luckless refugee who settles down in Kowloon, the dystopian-looking tenement city of the movie’s title. Chan’s allies treat each other like family despite some mischievous double-dealing and back-biting; his enemies only think of themselves.
Chan’s story, all about a community’s triumph over mobbed-up individualism, has already found a receptive audience in Hong Kong, where “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” is already the most-watched local production of all time. The movie’s reputation will likely continue to grow thanks to its lyrical pulp fiction dialogue, credited to four screenwriters, and its over-the-top fight choreography. “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” was custom-made to knock you on your ass, and while it’s sometimes a little too desperate to please, it’s also hard to resist a genre movie that works so hard to impress all comers.
The movie version of Kowloon resembles an animated M.C. Escher painting, filled with overlapping stairwells, choked with rebar, and overstuffed with low-drooping cables that bulge and creep over steam vents and crater-pocked concrete. Paint doesn’t peel off the walls so much as it accretes, one eggshell-thin layer on top of the other. Steam floats above the aluminum eaves but never seems to escape.
This movie’s Kowloon is a haven for kind-hearted degenerates like Cyclone (Koo), a barber and the city’s revered crime boss, as well as supporting characters like the media-obsessed AV (German Cheung) and his stalwart companions Twelfth Master (Tony Tsz-Tung Wu) and Shin ( Terrance Lau ). Their messy but stable microcosm is threatened by Chan, a desperate loner who only wants to make enough money to buy a fake ID. Chan is followed by the greedy triad gang boss, Mr. Big (Hung), and his flamboyant second-in-command, King ( Philip Ng ). Everybody knows how to fight and they all have garish wigs and costumes that scream mid-to-late ‘80s.
Most of the first half of “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” sets up the inevitable clash between Mr. Big and Cyclone’s respective gangs. There’s a little mystery surrounding Chan’s identity, but it’s not as memorable as the movie’s action scenes, which feature the sort of manic energy that one might expect from a comic book movie. In an early scene, Cyclone flicks his cigarette into the air, executes some disarming moves, and then reclaims his butt before gravity can. This sort of fantastic establishing scene prepares viewers for later fights, including maneuvers like a “spirit shield” and beat-em-up video game-ready weapons like sledgehammers and lead pipes.
The fights in “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” are so thrilling I had to double-check to confirm that action god Sammo Hung didn't choreograph them himself. That credit’s owed to Kenji Tanigaki , who also served as the action director for “ Sakra ,” last year’s Donnie Yen -helmed wuxia action fantasy. Here, Tanigaki and his stunt team are working on a bigger scale than their usual collaborations with Yen, and the results are even more exciting given the complementary efforts of director of photography Siu-Keung Cheng, production designer Kwok-Keung Mak, and a team of computer animators.
Moreover, director Soi Cheang specializes in this sort of half-squalid, half-romantic city symphony, having previously directed both big-budget action fantasies, like “ The Monkey King ,” starring Donnie Yen, and its two sequels (which swap Yen out for Aaron Kwok), and gorgeous/seedy neo-noirs like “Dog Bite Dog” and “Limbo.” Cheang synthesizes his career’s work to date in “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” the kind of movie where a man only credited as “Woman Beater” (Chu Pak Hon) attacks a prostitute ( Fish Liew ) and then gets aired out by Chan and his buddies, who each hold one of their opponent’s limbs and then repeatedly bash him into the ground like a dirty bedsheet.
The myth of the city as a kinder but not gentler home for outsiders is irresistible here, given the well-oiled collaboration between Cheang and his crew members, some of whom have been working together for years now. The filmmakers’ passion is infectious, and as a result, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” is a once-in-a-while assembly of talent that will make even the most hardened skeptic agree—this one’s worth the hype.

‘Cuckoo’ Review: Never Has a Movie Been More Aptly Named
Dan Stevens and Hunter Schafer face off in this unexpectedly fun and undeniably nutty horror-comedy about cross-species pollination.
- Share full article
By Jeannette Catsoulis
“Is this normal?” a bewildered hotel guest in “Cuckoo” inquires after witnessing a fellow guest stagger, vomiting, into the lobby. Viewers might be wondering the same thing about a movie whose title could reveal as much about the sensibility of its director as the nature of its plot.
Possessed of a singular, at times inexplicable vision, the German filmmaker Tilman Singer proves once again — after his experimental debut, “Luz” (2019) — that he’s more drawn to sensation than sense. Liberated from logic, his pictures dance on the border between bewitching and baffling, exciting and irksome. Sidling several steps closer to an identifiable plot, “Cuckoo” flaps around Gretchen (an excellent Hunter Schafer), a grieving, unsettled 17-year-old whose mother has died and whose father (Marton Csokas) has brought her to live with his new family in a resort in the Bavarian Alps.
From the moment she arrives, nothing seems quite right. Missing her mother and her life in America, Gretchen is slow to connect with her brisk stepmother (Jessica Henwick) and her much younger half sister, Alma (Mila Lieu), who is mute and suffers from unexplained seizures. Adding to Gretchen’s uneasiness is the resort’s touchy-feely owner, Herr König (Dan Stevens), who seems weirdly fixated on Alma. Strange screechings fill the woods, and a frightening figure in white appears to be stalking Gretchen as she walks home from her job at the resort’s reception desk. Maybe that switchblade we saw her unpack will come in handy, after all.
A tale of human-avian experimentation with phantasmagoric flourishes, “Cuckoo” is unsubtle and frequently unhinged. The narrative may be blurred, but the mood is pure freak show, and Stevens, bless him, immediately grasps the comic possibilities of the movie’s themes and the nuttiness of his character. Reprising his flawless German accent from the charming 2021 sci-fi romance “I’m Your Man,” he gives König a seductive creepiness that’s less mad scientist than horny ornithologist. Obsessed with replicating — in unspeakable ways — the breeding behaviors of the titular bird, König requires the cooperation of willing young women. Gretchen is not eager to become one of them.
Shooting on 35-millimeter film, Paul Faltz, backed by Simon Waskow’s whining, fidgety score, leans into the surreality of Gretchen’s predicament with bizarre close-ups. Ears jerk and twitch in response to mysterious calls; throats flutter with a rapid, stuttering pulse; slimy secretions are passed from one woman to another. And as the resort’s dangers escalate and Gretchen’s injuries multiply, the film’s bonkers, body-horror ambitions become the means by which she will overcome her grief and heal her emotional dislocation.
