How we achieved Independence

India was once called “Sone ki chidiya” which means that we had abundant resources. Our land was productive, we have ample of minerals and rocks. We were home to the largest spice market. We also have a productive human workforce. This made the British government capture our country and use it for our own benefits.

They conspired against us through the “Divide and Rule policy” and slowly gained control over the country. The people of our country being illiterate and ignorant were easily deceived by Britishers and they gained control of our kingdoms. Since this is a day of great historical importance for all the Indians, national holiday is being declared in India and all of us celebrate Independence Day with great warmth and show.

This is just a brief about Independence Day, but does anyone here know about the period of British Raj? Well, let me share with you all that it was between 1858 until 1947 that the Britishers colonized our Indian subcontinent. This time period is called the British Raj period.

Now, it becomes even more interesting to know how the British colonial rule began in our country. When the East India Company arrived in India, they were stripped of the goods and land of Indian citizens by conspiracy and Queen Victoria making it all the property of the monarchy.

The East India Company was founded in 1600 under Royal Charter during the monarchical reign of Elizabeth I. Though apparently its chief aim was to trade, it eventually became an indomitable force of colonization controlling the most part of our Indian subcontinent. The people living in the Indian subcontinent during that time became the subjects of the British colonial rule under Queen Victoria and subsequently other monarchs who came after her.

I am sure we all can gauge that gaining independence under such challenging situation was not an easy task, but required long and persistent efforts. One of the most prominent personalities who chiefly contributed towards gaining independence was Mahatma Gandhi or what we usually address him as Bapu .

What makes him even a greater personality is the fact that he achieved independence by not following the path of violence or bloodshed, but through his policy of non-violence wherein he did not oppose the rule of Britishers through armed fighting rather he with his followers started the non-violence campaign which comprised hunger strikes and civil disobedience. Their concerted efforts ultimately brought an end to the British Raj in our country. But the seeds of self-governance in our country were laid down much before India won its independence. In the 19 th century, several Indian councilors were appointed on various advisory roles. They were hired for the advisory support of the British viceroys who continued to rule across the major parts of India. In the year 1892, a law known as the Indian Councils Act came into being with a view to empower these councilors as well as other Indian officials. But they remained under the higher British authority and had to put up with the prejudices of the white men to be able to reach the pinnacle of success in their jobs.

It was somewhat in the midnight between 14 th August and daytime of 15 th August 1947 that the treaty of Indian sovereignty was signed. This was a time when George VI was ruling as the king in Britain and Clement Attlee was their prime minister. In India Jawaharlal Nehru became the prime minister of independent India and Britain renounced his rule over India. The Britishers no longer had anything to do with the Indian affairs.

Even though we do not bear witness to those times, but we can understand very well the intensity of that crucial time when our country actually gained independence. We cannot help but feel proud of it. However, the declaration of freedom came in written in the year 1929, which is much earlier. This declaration happened along with the great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and other known figures, who hoisted the Indian Flag.

It was indeed a big moment for all the Indians. The day of declaration of Indian independence is called as Purna Swaraj . It is quite significant to understand that even though India gained independence in the year 1947, it was only in the 1950s that India’s official constitution as an independent nation came into effect. The period in between was a transition phase in the form of 3 intervening years.

So how can we Indians let go off this momentous day in normalcy and not celebrate this historic day with great pomp and show. So on this day of great historical importance, our prime minister visits Red Fort and hoists the Indian National Flag or our Tricolor (Tiranga). Post that the national anthem is being sung. It is then followed by a stirring speech delivered by our prime minister to the people of its country. Now, the 73rd Independence Day will be celebrated on August 15 th , 2018. The whole sight looks so spectacular and mesmerizing that we can’t help but remain in awe while witnessing the whole ceremony.

The Prime minister hoists the national flag at Red Fort in New Delhi followed by parades by military and police forces. Singing the national anthem and drills are held throughout the country.

Good Morning All.

On this eve of Independence Day, I am overwhelmed to present my thoughts in front of everyone. I am thankful that I got the opportunity for expressing the views for mother, India. Independence Day is one of the most memorable days in history. It was the day when Indian got liberated. Britishers were ruling India for long two hundred years. The citizens of India faced a lot of problem under their rule.

Indians were treated like slaves; they were deprived of any happiness & fundamental rights in their own country. Those days were days of hardship & depression for the people of India. The march towards independence started in 1857 with the Indian Independence movement. Indian mutiny act was the first revolt against Britishers by soldiers. It is the first time leaders acted against the Britishers with unity. The response against the Britishers rises with the Indian mass movement in 1885.

It was followed by the Non-Cooperation movement by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. It led to several other events which cannot be erased from the history like Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. Although the Non-Cooperation movement gained support after the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre has to be withdrawn. The Indian leaders & citizens did not stop there; they kept trying in every possible way to fight against these foreigners.

In 1929 again the Civil Mass disobedience movement was launched which was to complete disobedience towards orders of British rule. To suppress this movement, there were violent acts & several Indians were killed mercilessly by the Britisher officials. In 1942 Quit India movement was launched that called for massive support to move British out of India.

Many freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Tantia Tope, Lal Bahadur Shastri , Subhash Chandra Bose, Nana Saheb with many other leaders were part of this struggle, who fought for their own country to bring back its glory. Finally, in 1947 India got independence on the 15th of August. It is a historic day which none of us can forget. On this day we pay tribute to all those freedom fighters who have gifted us the India we are living in today.

It is the most significant day in Indian history as it marks the sacrifice, bravery, hardship & patriotism shown by the freedom fighters. We celebrate this national day with great enthusiasm & patriotism flaunting our national flag & reciting our National Anthem. Every official building, schools, university hoists the National flag on this occasion.

There are numerous events organized on this day like dance, song, music, movie, play etc. to express our love for our country. All of us must carry forward the enthusiasm throughout the year with the notion to serve our motherland. It is our duty to do every possible thing which will give birth to a better India because youths are the best assets of a country.

Let us join our hands to make India the best nationality in the world. Let us celebrate the freedom & celebrate independence by paying back to our country. A famous quote says that no other sacrifice can be higher than the sacrifice for your motherland. With this, I would like to end my speech.

The Journey of Independence Day Speech: India’s path to freedom was not easy. The country gained independence because of our freedom fighters who exhibited immense courage and determination. This journey began somewhere around the 1800’s and ended in 1947. From the 1st war of Independence in 1857 to the Quit India Movement in 1942, India lost many lives to achieve freedom.

Thereafter, with the conclusion of the Quit India Movement in 1945 and the implementation of the Lord Mountbatten Plan on 3 June 1947, India achieved its independence on 15 August 1947.

Hello everyone, and I welcome you all to an independent and warm sunshine. Today, we are all gathered here to celebrate India’s journey til 15 August 1947. This journey is a celebration of the human spirit and the power of hope. This journey of independence begins with a desire for freedom that later burns in the hearts of our forefathers, who dared to dream of and achieve as a sovereign nation.

India’s quest for independence started with the Revolt of 1857 which is considered as the 1st War of Independence. The revolt was fueled by the discontent among Indian soldiers in the British East India Company’s army. Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier ignited the spark in the army and made a courageous attempt to reclaim our rights and dignity. Later on, General Bakht Khan (Delhi), Begum Hazrat Mahal (Lucknow), Rani Lakshmibai (Jhansi), Nana Saheb (Kanpur), Kunwar Singh (Bihar) and many more joined the revolt. Though we did not succeed, the seed of resistance was sown into the hearts of people and helped pave the way for future struggles.

The Lucknow Pact of 1916 was another landmark moment in the history of India’s journey to Independence Day. As a landmark moment, the pact showcased the unity among Hindus and Muslims against British rule. Indian leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Muhammad Ali Jinnah worked together for constitutional reforms. Moreover, this pact helped lay the foundation for a united front against colonial oppression.

Also, the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 can never be forgotten in India’s journey to independence. The merciless act of General Dyer claimed hundreds of innocent lives. This ruthless act sparked outrage in our people who wanted to break the chains of colonialism.

This chain of revolutions in the journey of independence started scaring the British. Another landmark event in the freedom struggle was the Mahatma Gandhi-led Non-Cooperation Movement. In this movement, he urged his fellow Indians to boycott British goods and institutions. The mass protest was successful and saw millions of people participating in the movement. The mass participation highlighted not only the unity but also reflected the yearning for freedom among the Indian population.

Later on, the Quit India Movement on August 8, 1942, saw a huge crowd rallying behind Mahatma Gandhi with a call for an immediate end to British rule. During this uprising, famous freedom fighter leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Chakravarti Rajgopalachari, and others were imprisoned. But as it is said, the torch of freedom never extinguished, and the spirit of resistance remained unbroken.

After years of struggles by freedom fighters, India saw a bittersweet moment in the history of freedom on August 14 and 15, 1947, which marked the end of colonial rule and also led to the creation of India and Pakistan as two separate nations. As India celebrated its freedom on 15 August 1947, the country faced communal tensions, mass migration, and the division of properties and financial assets.

As a student, we should never forget the struggles and sacrifices made by the freedom fighters of India. To make the journey of Independence more memorable and meaningful, all these incidents can be included in the curriculum of the syllabus students so that they can know more about them comprehensively. Also, students can depict scenes of freedom struggle through various activities, such as dramas, skits, dance, and songs.

Meanwhile, the government has announced service medals for 1,037 police personnel of various central and state forces on the eve of Independence Day. 214 personnel will be decorated with bravery medals, including a President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and 231 Medal for Gallantry (GM).

A maximum of 52 bravery medals has been given to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 31 to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, 17 police personnel each from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, 15 from Chhattisgarh and a dozen from Madhya Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag for the 11th time in a row on Independence Day. His first Independence Day address of his third term will take him past Manmohan Singh, who unfurled the tricolour 10 times from the ramparts of Red Fort during 2004-2014, and place him behind Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who did the honours 17 and 16 times respectively.

It will be eagerly seen if the Prime Minister announces any new initiative or expand the ambit of some ongoing welfare programmes at a time when a combined opposition, at its strongest in the last 10 years, has pivoted to populist welfare promises to draw support.

“Let me also mention here that in adopting the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita from July this year, we have removed one more relic of the colonial era. The new code is oriented towards ensuring justice for the victims of crime instead of focusing on punishment alone,” President Droupadi Murmu says in her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.

President Droupadi Murmu praised the new National Education Policy saying that NEP has already started showing results with regard to cultivating young minds and creating a new mindset that takes the best of traditions and contemporary knowledge is priority.

Ms. Murmu said the Amrit Kaal, which is the ongoing period of a quarter century leading to the centenary of the country’s Independence, is going to be shaped by the youth of today.

Recalling the horrors of partition, President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day said, “Today, on 14th August, the nation is observing Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, a day to recall partition horrors. As the great nation was divided, millions had to suffer forced migration, lakhs of people lost their lives. A day before we celebrate Independence Day, we recall that unparalleled human tragedy and stand with the families that were torn asunder.”

“My dear countrymen, India is among the fastest growing economies in the world with an average annual growth of 8% between 2021 and 2024. This has not only given more money in the hands of people, but there has been a huge decline in the number of people living below the poverty line as well,” says President Droupadi Murmu in her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.

The President attributed this remarkable progress to the relentless efforts of workers and farmers, the foresight of planners and wealth creators, and the visionary leadership guiding the nation.

She emphasised the government’s ambitious goal of transforming India into a ‘Viksit Bharat’ -- a developed nation -- by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India’s Independence.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation, lauded the Modi government for the “number of unprecedented initiatives for welfare of SC, ST and marginalised sections.”

“Steady progress of political democracy testifies to progress made towards consolidation of social democracy,” she says.

Ms. Murmu also appreciated the Election Commission of India, all other poll officials, security personnel who braved the heat and helped in the successful completion of 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“On 15th of August, in all parts of the country and also abroad, Indians participate in the flag-hoisting ceremonies, sing patriotic songs, and distribute sweets,” President Murmu says in her address to the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day.

“Patriotic and brave souls took immense risks and made supreme sacrifices. We salute their memory. Thanks to their unceasing labour, the soul of India awoke from centuries of torpor,” she adds.

With a successful G20, India has established its position by including the African Union as a member. India wants to use its influential position for world peace, Droupadi Murmu says.

With less than 24 hours left for the Independence Day celebration, Delhi Police has beefed up security arrangements in the city by deploying over 10,000 cops and 3,000 traffic police personnel, officials said.

All borders of the national capital will be sealed for the entry of commercial and heavy vehicles by Thursday midnight apart from heavy police deployment, they said.

Additionally, 700 AI-based facial recognition cameras have been installed in Central and New Delhi, they added.

Additional police teams and paramilitary forces have been deployed at various locations including IGI Airport, railway stations, bus stands, malls, metro stations and markets, the officials said.

Ten CISF personnel, including one posthumous, have been awarded the police medal for gallantry on the eve of the Independence Day for an encounter with terrorists in Jammu in 2022, two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

Two heavily armed terrorists had attacked a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel manned picket just before 4 am on April 22, 2022, near Chaddha camp in the Sunjawan area of Jammu.

The ‘fidayeen’ attackers sprayed a volley of bullets from their assault weapons and lobbed grenades at the picket when a shift change was taking place and CISF personnel onboard a bus had just reached the spot to relieve their colleagues standing guard overnight.

As the bus reached the ‘Sunjawan naka’, the CISF said, terrorists again started firing at the bus and also used UBGL (under barrel grenade launcher).

Immediately, Patra and Rajesh Kumar got off the bus and positioned themselves for retaliation while the other personnel, under the supervision of Patel, took position in the bus and opened fire on the terrorists, the force said.

Fifty-eight-year-old Patel, hailing from the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, made the “supreme sacrifice” in the service of the nation, the CISF said.

Police sub-inspector Dhanaji Honmane, who was martyred in an encounter with Naxalites in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra in 2020, was among the 17 police personnel from the State who have been selected for the Medal for Gallantry on the eve of the Independence Day .

A total of 59 medals have been announced for the Maharashtra police force - 17 of them for gallantry, 3 for distinguished service and 39 for meritorious service.

The government on Wednesday (August 14, 2024) announced service medals for 1,037 police personnel of various Central and State forces on the eve of Independence Day.

According to a Union Home Ministry statement, 214 personnel will be decorated with bravery medals, including a President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and 231 Medal for Gallantry (GM). The GM includes four decorations for fire fighters and one for a civil defence personnel.

President Droupadi Murmu will address the nation on Wednesday on the eve of the 78th Independence Day, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has said.

The address will be broadcast from 7 p.m. on the entire national network of Akashvani and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in Hindi followed by the English version, it said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Broadcast of the address in Hindi and English on Doordarshan will be followed by broadcast in regional languages by regional channels of Doordarshan.

Akashvani will broadcast regional language versions at 9.30 p.m. on its respective regional networks, the statement added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag for the 11th time in a row on Thursday (15th August, 2024) on Independence Day – the centrepiece annual event where he lays out his government’s agenda, presents its report card, makes important policy, and programme announcements and speaks about burning issues.

PM Modi’s first Independence Day address of his third term will take him past Manmohan Singh, who unfurled the tricolour 10 times from the ramparts of Red Fort during 2004-2014, and place him behind Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who did the honours 17 and 16 times respectively.

He used the occasion to speak about some of the ideological goals of his government and speak about the violence against women referring to the horrific incident of Kolkata. Modi uses his Independence Day speech to frame his vision for the government. Wearing his trademark Rajasthani style turban, which he wears on August 15, Modi gave his longest speech ever. We look at the five takeaways from his speech. 1. The middle class PM Modi lauded the countrymen for their hard work. For them, Modi said the government would work for ‘ease of living mission.’ He spoke of enhancing the quality of life in urban areas through systematic assessments and improvements in infrastructure and services. A key message from his speech was to create quality education infrastructure in the country so that students don't have to go out, and instead come here to study, which he termed as the revival of Nalanda Spirit. As a number of paper leaks in medical exams exposed the current situation, he assured that his government would add 75,000 new medical seats in the next 5 years. The PM also talked about inducting “fresh blood” in politics. Modi gave a call to bring one lakh youth into the political system, specifically those with no history of politics in their families. He said this initiative was aimed at fighting the evils of nepotism and casteism and inducting fresh blood into India's polity. 2. The futuristic goals Modi laid down a broad outline for Vision 2047. The other futuristic targets that Modi outlined included making India a global leader in semiconductor production. He envisioned transforming India into a global manufacturing hub, leveraging its vast resources and skilled workforce. Modi spoke about indigenous design capabilities and urged to create products that cater to both domestic and international markets, coining the phrase - Design in India, Design for the World. He called upon the industry to make India a leader in the global gaming market. He also batted for making the Indian standards as global benchmarks. 3. Ideological goals The prime minister spoke at length about his government’s ideological goals like the Uniform Civil Code, 'One Nation, One Poll'. In fact, he coined a new phrase, secular civil code which needs to replace the current communal civil code. Modi’s emphasis on these ideological promises aimed to signal that despite the BJP being short on majority, it will continue with its ideological promises. This was aimed at BJP’s core constituency which may have left wondering if the party would go slow on key promises due to less number of seats. 4. Political message Modi sent out a message to neighbours that they should not fear India as it was based on the principle of co-existence. Referring to the current situation in Bangladesh, the PM said the neighbour should protect Hindus and other minorities. Modi also reiterated his commitment to fight against the corrupt, which could be seen as a signal to his opponents that he would continue to take them to task for the ‘acts of corruption.’ 5. Security of women The prime minister spoke about the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata to talk about women's security. He said the punishment should be exemplary and it should be widely publicised to send out fear among the criminals. Modi’s reference signals that the government may push to make the punishment in the case as an example.

Independence Day 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, while addressing from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day , made a strong pitch for a “secular civil code” in the country, saying that it is the “need of the country”. According to PM Narendra Modi, the secular civil code is the way to “end” religious discrimination.

Modi, during his address, also touched upon various topics, including the Kolkata doctor's rape-murder case and the Bangladesh crisis, and lauded the Indian Olympics contingent.

There should be discussions on the Uniform Civil Code. The present civil code appears to be communal. India needs a ‘secular’ civil code. It is the need of the hour to have a secular civil code and do away with discriminatory communal civil code. Supreme Court has held discussions regarding the Uniform Civil Code again and again, and it has given orders several times. A large section of the country believes - and it is true, that the civil code that we are living with is actually a Communal Civil Code in a way...I would say that it is the need of the hour that there be a Secular Civil Code in the country.
I would like to express my pain, once again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening - there is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage. The country, society, and state governments will have to take this seriously. Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest - this is important to instil confidence in society. I would also like to say that when rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed. But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in news, but restricted to a corner. It is the need of the hour that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is very important to instil this fear.
As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope that the situation there gets normal at the earliest. The concerns of 140 crore countrymen to ensure the safety of Hindus and minorities there - India always wants our neighbouring countries to walk the path of prosperity and peace. We are committed to peace...In the days to come, we will continue to wish well for Bangladesh in its 'Vikas Yatra' because we think about the welfare of humankind.
This year and for the past few years, due to natural calamity, our concerns have been mounting. Several people have lost their family members and property in natural calamity; the nation, too, has suffered losses. Today, I express my sympathy to all of them and I assure them that this nation stands with them in this hour of crisis.
We are proud that we carry the blood of the 40 crore people who uprooted colonial rule from India. Today, we are 140 crore people. If we resolve and move together in one direction, then we can become ' Viksit Bharat ' by 2047 by overcoming all obstacles.
Today, we also have with us the youth who made the Indian flag fly high in the Olympics. On behalf of 140 crore countrymen, I congratulate all our athletes and players...In the next few days, a huge contingent of India will leave for Paris to participate in the Paralympics. I extend best wishes to all our Paralympians.
How can we forget the Corona period? Our country administered vaccines to crores of people, the fastest of all, across the world. This is the same country where terrorists used to come and attack us. When the armed forces of the country execute surgical strikes and airstrikes, the youth of the country are filled with pride. That is why the 140 crore citizens of the country are proud today.
For Viksit Bharat 2047, we invited suggestions from the countrymen. The many suggestions we received reflect the dreams and aspirations of our citizens. Some people suggested making India the skill capital, some others said that India should be made a manufacturing hub and the country must become self-reliant. Reforms in governance and justice system, creation of greenfield cities, capacity building, India’s own space station - these are the aspirations of the citizens….When the people of the nation have such big dreams, it takes our self-confidence to newer heights, and we become more resolute.
We gave the mantra for 'Vocal for Local'. Today, I am happy that ‘Vocal for Local’ has become a new mantra for the economic system. Every district has started taking pride in its produce.
We are moving forward with a resolution, but there are some people who cannot see progress or think of India's good unless it benefits them…The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people. There are uncountable challenges, both external and internal - these will only increase. I want to say to such forces that India's development will not pose a threat to anyone….The world should not worry seeing India’s development.
