Responsibilities of the graduate Research Assistants must involve active research of some form, regardless of whether the research is the assistant’s own. This can involve employment for regular fieldwork, lab work, library research, data analysis, writing, curating of exhibitions, or any other activity that can be counted as research. Research Assistants are not significantly involved with teaching or primarily devoted to administrative functions, such as working as filing or reception.

The duties of Research Assistants vary considerably, but may include:

  • Searching for and reviewing published literature on a research topic
  • Helping to develop a project methodology
  • Assisting with lab work
  • Taking notes
  • Attending team or project meetings
  • Assisting in developing resources for project management
  • Collecting data
  • Entering and analyzing data

In all cases, the exact responsibilities of the Research Assistant depend on the nature of the work and assignments made by the supervisor. However, work assigned should be related to research, even if it involves the least glamorous parts of research, such as organizing and storing data or managing correspondence with collaborators.

Work assignments should not include personal assistance to the supervisor or others, such as running personal errands for the supervisor’s family. If the work is primarily clerical or pedagogical, the Graduate Assistant might be more appropriately appointed as a Project Assistant or Teaching Assistant instead.

Position Summary

The UEIL is seeking a research assistant (RA)/Technician  ( one year- grant funded) to assist in the day-to-day technical tasks of the laboratory. RA will be responsible for maintaining breeding colonies, running behavioral assays, perfusions, tissue processing for immunohistochemistry, microscopy, sample preparation for qPCR, RNAseq, and spatial sequencing including histochemical and biochemical assays. Additional duties and responsibilities include (not limited to) checking and maintaining stocks and solutions in the lab, staying up to date with regulatory training, and general lab support. We are seeking a motivated individual with a strong background in neuroscience or molecular biology, and a strong history of working with small animals in a laboratory setting.

There is potential for growth and opportunities with this position and is to be expected. This is an ideal position for a recent graduate looking to pursue further graduate studies or medical professions.

UEIL is led by Dr. Konofagou, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, we are a translational science lab focused on using ultrasound in the areas of real-time imaging and as a theranostic tool in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. This position will be assisting in studies using focused ultrasound in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders as well as support other groups as needed.

Responsibilities

  • (35%)Handling small animals and perfusions. 
  • (25%) Perform cryostat sectioning and immunohistochemistry.
  • (15%) Perform and assist with mouse behavior as needed.
  • (10%) Sample preparation for qPCR, RNAseq, spatial sequencing, and biochemical assays.
  • (10%) Assist in the maintenance of lab safety protocols.
  • (5%) Performs other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree required in a scientific discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of experience in a research environment. 1 year of experience handling rodents in a laboratory setting and/or wet-laboratory experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: The ideal candidate must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and positively contribute. to labs aims and objectives. Strong organization, communication, and computer skills. Ability to prioritize, and work independently and under direct supervision from senior lab personnel.
  • Preferred: Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience working independently with animals (i.e. breeding, behavior, surgery) and laboratory experience (can include undergrad volunteering in a research lab) in chemistry, biology, physics, or a related science, although neuroscience or behavioral psychology is highly preferred

Duties include*:

  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Prefer a degree in the Neurobiology, Cancer Biology, Bioengineering, Biological Sciences.
  • He/she must have experience in handling small animals and conducting assessments of transgenic mice using molecular biology and other approaches. The job requires someone who is meticulous and highly organized.
  • Proficiency in Immunohistochemistry, Western Blotting, histology, immunostaining, multiplexed protein assays, light and confocal microscopy. Experience with cell culture, transcriptomics, proteomics, and other techniques a plus.
  • Computer experience with spreadsheet and word processing applications.
  • Experience or willingness to learn quantitative imaging analysis of brain tissue imaging.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

Job Summary

The Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center is seeking a clinical research technician/assistant for an innovative and large prospective cohort study at the University of Michigan. Join our dynamic interdisciplinary team of experts in Allergy, Immunology, Epidemiology, Obstetrics, and Genetics as we investigate the pathogenesis of food allergy and other allergic conditions. As a clinical research technician/assistant for M-SIBS, a birth cohort examining the development of food allergies, you will play a key role in the study's early implementation by helping with study participant recruitment, data and biospecimen collection, and the family experience. We are looking for a candidate who can autonomously recruit participants, collect biospecimens and perform home visits. The candidate will help to ensure compliance with pre-established work scope responsibilities with a focus on completion of duties within established periods to meet study objectives while utilizing study protocol standards. This individual will also collaborate with other study coordinators within a large team-based science initiative with the goal of professional growth as the study progresses. Responsibilities*

RESEARCH TASKS (75%) INCLUDE

  • Acting as a study coordinator while recruiting participants, determining eligibility, consenting, and scheduling follow up as needed
  • Preparing recruitment materials
  • Assisting with data entry related to study visits.
  • Tracking and maintaining data collection efforts with participant research visits
  • Processing data using software including RedCap, LabVantage, MiChart (Epic)

Required Qualifications*

About the Role

You will develop and deliver composites manufacturing technologies for the space industry, focusing on optimising space-based carbon fibre optical reflective mirrors and advancing additive processing of continuous fibre composites. The role involves collaborating with industry partners, contributing to joint developments, and translating research into manufacturing and simulation technologies for end users. You will work closely with external partners and University colleagues, reporting research results to project partners and preparing dissemination outputs, including journal publications and presentations at international conferences.  

You should have knowledge and experience in composites and finite element analysis. Experience in composites manufacturing, process simulation, and testing of composite components for space applications is beneficial but not essential. Strong technical communication skills and the capability to clearly summarise achievements to brief colleagues and project partners is also essential. As Research Assistant, you must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar field. As Research Fellow, you must hold or be close to completion of a PhD or have equivalent experience in Materials, Manufacturing, Composites or similar field. Job Summary:

The Religious Studies Program at UW-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Religion and Technology beginning August 2025. We would be especially interested in applicants whose research and/or teaching addresses AI in some way. Scholars of all religious traditions and geographic areas whose research is rooted in religion and technology are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have the capacity to teach large gateway courses to Religious Studies and a capstone course on theory and method in Religious Studies. The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Letters & Science, that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and (undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to an environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the intellectual life of the Religious Studies Program and will teach introductory surveys and upper-level undergraduate courses, mentor undergraduate students, engage in significant ongoing scholarly research and publication, and perform department, university, and community services as appropriate for faculty rank. The general teaching load is 4 courses per year, 2 in one semester and 2 in the other.

King’s College London is a leading University with nine Faculties. As part of King’s Health Partners, we have an excellent environment for health care interaction and a strong focus on mentoring and career development.

The Clinical Diagnostics Development Unit (CDDU) was launched in late 2023 funded by King’s Health Partners as a new core facility within the department of infectious diseases. The CDDU is a translational research laboratory dedicated to the processing of human samples to facilitate research in infection, inflammation and immune-related disorders and where adherence to harmonized protocols is essential. We also work together with our collaborators and external clients to develop novel protocols to aid biomarker discovery with diagnostic applications.

The CDDU was formed from the back of King’s College London’s COVID-19 testing programme, and we gained UKAS accreditation (ISO 15189) for our unique COVID-19 testing assay. Our expertise in this area and quality management systems will facilitate the accreditation of other novel assays which we hope will be routinely used in the clinics based upon these governing standards.

Together with local core facilities we provide end-to-end biological sample processing and data analysis for biomarker discovery from clinical samples that will help to dissect the signalling pathways dysregulated in disease and response to therapy. 

About the role

We are looking for a Research Assistant with a biomedical science or molecular biology background. The successful candidate should be skilled, meticulous and versatile, who will support the team in the day-to-day running of the new Clinical Diagnostics Development Unit (CDDU). The CDDU is a translational research laboratory dedicated to the processing of clinical samples to facilitate research in infection, inflammation and immune-related disorders and where adherence to protocols is essential. The role involves a combination of performing laboratory technical assays, quality audits, research, R&D, administration and training others.

The role holder will have the responsibility for the collection and processing of clinical and academic research generated human biological specimens to support research activities across various projects and themes. You will assist the team in all laboratory operations including: biological sample processing from clinical trials and academic research, method validation, various proteomic/nucleic acid assays, cell functional assays, sample inventory and documentation audits, and general laboratory and equipment maintenance as well as troubleshooting. You will create and maintain a database of results for routine and research purposes. You will liaise with research groups within King’s Health Partners and external clients.

Analytical techniques include: quantitative PCR, infection research (viral detection and cell infectivity assays), cytology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, PBMC isolation and other technical assays as required to deliver the client-based operational plan. You will also be involved in bespoke assay development and validation. You will work closely with the CDDU Quality Manager to regularly review our quality processes and documentation towards GCLP and UKAS ISO 17025 regulatory compliance.

On a day-to-day basis, you will take ownership of your assigned work to completion including associated data analysis and necessary written reports. Updating paper and digital logs of samples, data generated and required communications with team members, clients, service engineers and local estates. Maintain adherence to the required quality, safety and regulatory requirements. You will be expected to write laboratory schedules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), data reports and participate in audit preparation and risk assessments. You will be expected to present study data to the team, board members and clients.

The post holder should be familiar with graphical and statistical packages and spreadsheets for data entry and analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to help train other staff and students, be self-motivated to update their technical and scientific knowledge. To manage their workloads to strict timelines and ensure sample and data integrity.

There will occasionally be clinical research studies requiring extended hours and weekend work for sample processing which will require the candidate to have a flexible approach within the team.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • BSc in biological/biomedical sciences/molecular biology/ or equivalent
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment (GCP)
  • Experience of handling and processing human biological samples
  • Tissue culture experience, particularly primary human cells and blood
  • Able to organise, analyse and summarise data, report experimental or processed sample results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise, and complete work within deadlines
  • Ability to follow laboratory SOPs and to be able to advise and supervise others in these tasks Effective verbal and written communication

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry
  • Human Tissue Act and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice training
  • Experience in western blotting, ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing
  • Bioinformatics
