Quick Review

* The University of Vienna is among the institutions that don't provide data on acceptance rates. This might happen because the university has programs where applicants only need to meet admission requirements to enroll and don't necessarily compete with others.

We estimate the above acceptance rate based on admission statistics of closely ranked nearby universities with similar research profiles that do publish such data.

How to apply at the University of Vienna: Frequently Asked Questions

We strongly encourage you to read the entire blog post and follow the suggested links. We cannot offer any individual assistance via the comment thread or other social media outlets. ALL information you need on how to apply can be found in the blog post and on the website Studying at the University of Vienna .

Update: July 2024

How to get started – studying a bachelor/diploma or master programme

“ I would like to study at your university. How can I apply? ” This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive on Facebook or Instagram .

It is not easy to give a concrete answer, as this depends on many factors such as your citizenship, the issuing country of your secondary-school leaving certificate/degree and the degree programme you are interested in.

Keep in mind that the processing of international applications takes several weeks. Unfortunately, this often collides with the duration of visa applications, which may result in missed deadlines . We therefore recommend applying at the beginning of the application period . The application period depends on your citizenship. So inform yourself early on, which application period applies to you.

An ideal starting point is the website Studying at the University of Vienna , where most questions about the application and admission procedure for bachelor/diploma and master programmes at the University of Vienna are answered.

To make things easier for you, we have collected FAQs of international applicants who are interested in studying at the University of Vienna. Here, an additional 5 step guide to applying at the university can be found.

1. Which degree programmes can I study at the University of Vienna?

Five students sit around a table and are happily working on a project together.

Are you interested in a bachelor/diploma or master programme? You can find an overview of all bachelor/diploma and master programmes offered at the University of Vienna as well as detailed information about the individual degree programmes on the website Studying at the University of Vienna .

Note: The University of Vienna does not offer any medical programmes (Medicine, Dentistry). These are offered at the Medical University of Vienna .

2. How do I apply for a specific programme?

Information on how to apply:

  • for bachelor/diploma programmes
  • for master programmes

Follow the respective link for the programme you are interested in. There you’ll find information on the required documents, deadlines and steps in the application and admission procedure. These depend, among other things, on the issuing country of your secondary-school leaving certificate (for admission to bachelor/diploma programmes) and where you completed your previous degree programme (for admission to master programmes).

Do not work with agencies offering to process your application! Agencies are not permitted to apply on behalf of students according to § 60 para 6 Universities Act 2002 . Applications submitted by agencies will be rejected without exception. The University of Vienna does not have any cooperation agreements (except for exchange programmes such as Erasmus+). If you are interested in studying at the University of Vienna, you have to apply for admission yourself.

Our online application process is very easy – you can find step-by-step instructions on the website Studying at the University of Vienna . If you apply for admission as a non-EU/EEA citizen or without EU/EEA secondary school-leaving certificate/higher education degree, you will receive a “Zulassungsbescheid” (admission letter). With this document, you can apply for a student visa. Please consult the responsible Austrian representation (embassy/consulate) to find out if you have to meet any further requirements.

Please keep in mind that the number of study places is limited for some degree programmes. That means, that an entrance exam procedure or selection procedure is conducted for these degree programmes. You can only be admitted to degree programmes with entrance exam/selection procedure in the summer semester if you have already successfully participated in the entrance exam/selection procedure for this academic year. The application period for the next academic year will be announced on our website:

  • bachelor/diploma programmes with entrance exam procedure
  • master programmes with selection procedure

3. Do I need to be able to speak German if I want to study at the University of Vienna?

Bachelor programmes.

The language of instruction for all bachelor/diploma programmes at the University of Vienna is German, even if individual courses are instructed (partly) in another language. Therefore, you already need a proof of German language proficiency at level A2 or higher to apply for admission. You can only attend a German course at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities if you already have a proof of German language proficiency at level A2. For admission to the degree programme, you need a proof of German language proficiency at level C1 .

The bachelor programme in International Legal Studies is instructed in German and English. Therefore, you have to submit a proof of German language proficiency of at least level A2, as well as a proof of English language proficiency at level B2 or higher in your application.

Read this blog post with the most important facts about the proof of German knowledge carefully.

Master programmes

Some master programmes are instructed in English . For these programmes, you do not need to provide a proof of German language proficiency. However, for some of them you might need to participate in a selection procedure . For multilingual master programmes (taught in German and English/other languages) a proof of German language proficiency is also required.

4. How much is the tuition fee?

The amount of the tuition fee depends on your citizenship. In addition to the tuition fee, you also have to pay the Students’ Union fee (24,70 Euro per semester for the academic year 2024/25).

  • Detailed information regarding the amount and payment of the tuition fee/Student’s Union fee

Scholarships

The University of Vienna does not offer any wide ranged funding options. The website Studying at the University of Vienna provides detailed information about financial matters such as discounts, allowances and scholarships for students of the University of Vienna. More information regarding all scholarships and research grants offered in Austria is available in the database of the OeAD – Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation .

5. How can I finance my studies in Vienna/Austria?

Whether or not you are allowed to work in Austria depends on your citizenship and the kind of employment you would like to obtain. If you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country, it also depends on your residence permit.

  • Detailed information regarding working in Austria
  • General information about studying and living in Vienna

6. I cannot find what I am looking for, please help me!

Three students talk while in the courtyard at the main building of the University of Vienna

The staff of the University of Vienna can only offer help with questions about degree programmes that we offer. If you have questions about degree programmes offered at other universities, you have to contact the respective institution. For example, if you need help regarding the admission procedure for a degree in Medicine, please contact the Medical University of Vienna .

We also cannot offer any help or information regarding visa applications and residence permits. If you have any questions in this regard, contact the responsible Austrian representation (embassy, consulate…). The Federal Ministry of the Republic of Austria for European and International Affairs provides a list of all Austrian representations worldwide.

Detailed important information regarding…

  • the degree programmes offered
  • the application and admission procedure
  • the organisation of your studies
  • tuition fee/Students’ Union fee

… is available on our website. Once you have gathered all necessary information as well as the required documents, make sure that the application period for your degree programme is open and you are ready to apply! The processing of requests and applications takes time, as we receive a high number of requests.

Dear Sir/Madam. I’m Yessica from Indonesia. I really want to study in University of Vienna. I want to apply for International Marketing in English. Can I get the scholarship for this programme? And, How to apply? Thank you

Dear Yessica, most of the information you’re looking for is in the blogpost above. Please read it carefully and follow the suggested links. If you still have any questions, please contact student point directly.

The process of admission is really complicated, especially for non-EU citizens. Smells like a dicrimination. I have EU diploma, but that`s not the case. Too many question that are not answered in website and no one will answer in StudentPoint. Especially about non-degree programs. No one gives precise answer. One says deadline for erstanmeldung is 2 March, someone says January, other says November. I don`t understand. And also what to do for people who don`t know German? I love this university. But, you don`t care about anyone, except students from German speaking countries.

Dear Georgiy, we’re sorry you see things like this. Fact is, the admission for non EU citizens is a bureaucratic effort due to legal reasons. Most of the study programmes are taught in German, so German proficiency at level B2 is required according to the CEFR. (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) Regarding your question about deadline and term dates, read here more: http://studentpoint.univie.ac.at/en/studying/term-dates/the-academic-year/ If you read this blogpost carefully and follow the links you’ll find very useful information for your admission to the University of Vienna. For your specific questions please contact Student Point.

Hi Ali, we can’t help you in this matter. You will have to do your own research, this is a blogpost about how to register at the University of Vienna.

My name is Abbos. I am from Uzbekistan. I am studying undergraduate degree in Economics with Finance at Westminster International University in Tashkent. I will graduate from this university next year 2016. I am interested in studying my graduate degree in Europe, especially in your country. I have heard many positive opinions about universities in Austria. However, living expenses might be high in Austria. What are the requirements for the Masters programs in University of Vienna? Do you require GMAT, or GRE results? The most important question is, Can I apply for 2016/2017 academic year for Masters Degree now? Because though I am graduating I am not holding graduate diploma yet. I may get it in October. University may provide proof letter or certificate alternatively at the moment.

I will look forward hearing from you, Sincerely, Abbos

Hello Abbos, the requirements depend on the master programme you’re interested in. Here you can check all master programmes: http://studentpoint.univie.ac.at/en/application/admission-master-programmes/ Normally you’ll need proficiency in German and there are study programmes where you also need proficiency in English. Hello, I applied for an English taught masters program for summer Semester 2016. My application was received on the 7th of December 2015. I would like to know when I am expected to get the admission letter from the school, bearing in mind that the visa process for non European students takes about 2-6 months. I am concerned because if summer Semester starts on the 1st of March 2016, then there’s the possibility of getting the study permit late, which means one might not be able to make it in time for commencement of studies. Please, I would appreciate an elaborate explanation on this issue in order to to allay my fears. Thanks.

Please refer directly to the department to which you sent your application. We hope you can understand that we cannot answer specific questions via this blog forum. The responsible staff is located at the admissions office.

Dear Madam/Sir, I am Brazilian, I studied pharmacy. I am doing a research about medicinal plants. I am interested in studying Master in Pharmacognosy, is it available? I found a department of pharmacognosy but did not find a Master. If there is no Master available, could I apply to work with the research team. What are the requirements in both cases? I am studying German, but I still need more courses to reach the required level. Is there a possibility to have a conditional acceptance; I complete language study in Austria first, then I start the Master or the research in university. Thank you in advance Best regards

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is to request more information about your course for a Non-degree students and Studienberechtigungsprüfung exams.

First of all I am a student from Poland and recently I’ve finished my second class in high school(Poland),currently I am doing pre-access to HE course in City of Liverpool College and my GCSE exam in May/June. I do not have a school leaving certificate and matura exam, but I am interested in applying to study as a non-degree student in this year(University Preparation Programme-German course). After this course I would like to be admitted for a degree program, but I have read on your website that I can only be admitted with documents like:

-school leaving certificate

-diploma of a university programme

-the Austrian Berufsreifeprüfung

-the Austrian Externistenprüfung

-the Austrian Studienberechtigungsprüfung.

My question is what are the conditions to pass Berufsreifeprüfung,Externisten,or Studienberechtigung. Can I start this after my German course?

I have always been dreaming about leaving in Vienna and studying in such a reputable University as UW.

I would be grateful if you would send me more information, I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Paulina, we already answered your questions via Facebook Messages. Please read the blog post carefully. For specific questions please contact our Student Point: http://bit.ly/StudentPointEN

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics

There is a joint doctoral school of the University of Vienna and the TU Wien, called the Vienna School of Mathematics (VSM). Membership in this school is automatic for students that are hired on a pre-doc position announced via the VSM, for other doctoral students in mathematics, membership is possible upon recommendation of their advisor.

The current relevant curriculum for a doctoral studies in mathematics is the "Doktoratsstudium der Naturwissenschaften und der technischen Wissenschaften". The current version of the curriculum is available here , but this is mainly for reference (it is in German and mainly contains formal regulations).

The regular duration of the doctoral studies according to the curriculum is 3 years, but this is to be viewed as a guideline. The main formal prerequisite for the doctoral program is a completed master program in mathematics or equivalent background. The prerequisites for the doctoral program will be checked during the admission process, both from a formal and from a scientific point of view. The admission to all programs at the University of Vienna is handled by the central administration of the University and in our case the rules of the curriculum are uniform for all natural sciences. More information on the admission to doctoral programs can be found on this page of the Center for Doctoral Studies , which is the main point of contact concerning admission. In particular, for the admission process, you will need a confirmation of supervision from a faculty member who is entitled to supervise PhD theses at out University — so you will have to find an advisor before you can apply for admission. You will also have to provide a description of a PhD project. In our area, a rough description of the direction to be pursued during the doctoral studies usually is sufficient — please check with your (intended) advisor on this.

The doctoral program is structured in three phases, the entry phase , the research phase and the final phase .

  • The purpose of the entry phase is to formulate (jointly with your advisor) a concrete topic or project for your PhD studies. This phase should be completed within a year of starting with a public presentation of the thesis project in front of the Doctoral Advisory Board of the Faculty of Mathematics. Currently, the talks in the presentation are scheduled for 20 minutes with a subsequent discussion of up to 10 minutes. They should be accessible for a broader (mathematical) audience. In preparation, the candidate has to formulate, usually jointly with the supervisor, a research proposal that outlines the project. The aim of this presentation is to show that there is a plan for the project and how this fits into the scientific landscape rather than to provide scientific details. The public presentations take place several times per semester and are widely announced. If you and your supervisor agree that you are getting close to the presentation, please send a mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at containing the names of the student and supervisor(s) as well as a working title for the thesis project, stating that you will be interested in presenting in the near future. This help us in planning presentations and makes sure that you and your advisor will be involved in finding dates, etc. Via the SSC, you will also be informed about the forms needed to register for the presentation.
  • After a successful presentation, the thesis project is formally approved by the DSPL (" Doktoratsstuidenprogrammleiter "), who is the main person responsible for the Doctoral Program. Based on their approval and support of the DSPL, the student and the supervisor(s) formulate and sign a dissertation agreement (" Dissertationsvereinbarung ") that contains the main information about the thesis project. You will be provided with the necessary forms after your successful presentation. The dissertation agreement also contains information about the coursework that has to be completed during the Doctoral Program. Before that agreement is signed, no decision can be made about the acknowledgement of courses. Please consult your supervisor when choosing courses during the entry phase of your studies.
  • Signing the dissertation agreement marks the beginning of the research phase of studies, during which the main academic activities are carried out. Apart from 24 ECTS of course work (for which specifications may be formulated in the dissertation agreement), the main task is the preparation of a thesis which can be either monographic or cumulative. Most theses that were produced at our faculty during the last years are available online here (select "Dissertation" and "Fakultät für Mathematik" on the search page). During the research phase, yearly progress reports , which form a part of the dissertation agreement, have to be provided.
  • Completion of the thesis marks the start of the final phase of the doctoral program. If your thesis is getting close to completion, please inform us via mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at so that things can be well coordinated as soon as possible. This is also a good time to read the more-detailed information on the final phase . The student and the supervisor(s) have to suggest three international experts on the topic of the thesis, who agree to take on the role of being  referees . Via the DSPL, this suggestion is passed to the " Studienpräses " of the University of Vienna, who is responsible for the selection of two referees. The referees have to be contacted via the SSC to continue the process of announcing the public defense of the thesis, which is the final step in the doctoral studies that is coordinated via the SSC.
