What happens if, instead of submmiting a 1-page creative resumé, I subtmit a 2-page creative resumé ??? is it that bad?

Well-known member.

I was in for a surprise when I found out about the 5-10 page paper.

I just kind of free-styled my film resume. I have no idea if there is a format for film specific resumes, so I invented my own. You can see it here

okay. What's the deal with this "creative" resume? I only saw on the Tisch website that they ask for a resume. But from my previous applications, sometimes they say one thing on one part of the site, then are more specific on another part of th site. So I'm wondering- Is this a regular work/experience type of resume. Or is this a creative resume? And what exactly is a creative resume anyway... wouldn't this be very similar to the creative portfolio list that's already required. Need some clarification on this please. Thanks.

tomorrowsNIGHT

The creative resume is the same portfolio list that they ask for at NYU. Tisch Film/TV asks for a resume in addition to any brag sheet you may send to the office of undergraduate admission. On this creative resume, you can submit any film related employment, any and/or all creative works achieved, basically anything and everything you've done related to film. This can be in any resume format you choose. Tyler

so basically the only difference between the portfolio list and the creative resume is that the resume is more in depth and can include any creative activity?

Palm Tree Armada

thats the impression i've gotten, kurt.

  • Nov 29, 2006

the 1 page creative resume is for undergrad admission. I thought you all were talking about graduate admission. For graduate, what are those requirements? They just mention a resume... and nothign else. A professional resume or creative resume?

DrMagnificent

  • Dec 2, 2006

It doesn't all have to be film related, does it? It just says creative works accomplished. Does anyone know exactly what they're looking for with this? Like awards or something? I'm afraid mine's going to look pretty pathetic.

  • Dec 3, 2006

the undergraduate requirements are spelled out clearly. It says creative resume. The graduate requirements for the resume aren't. What's everyone worried about? Just follow those instructions.

How to Build Your NYU Film Portfolio

Zani Wilson

Assistant Director of Admissions, NYU Abu Dhabi

Two female students looking through a viewfinder.

Applying to college can be stressful! Especially when you’re applying to film school. To apply to the NYU Tisch Film and Television program, you must complete the NYU Common Application and a lengthy creative portfolio. Here are some tips for creating your NYU film portfolio from someone who’s been there!

Tisch School of the Arts’ facade.

Start Early!

With two essays, a film, a résumé, and a creative submission, the Tisch film portfolio is one of the lengthiest applications around. The process of creating your portfolio should take about as long as is does to complete the NYU Common Application, if not longer. Therefore, you should start working on your Common Application and artistic portfolio as soon as possible! It takes time to write essays, shoot a short film, and/or edit a photo series. This is not an application that you can pull an all-nighter to finish.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!

The good news is you don’t have to wait until you submit your Common Application to start your portfolio. You can start adding materials to your SlideRoom as soon as you create your Common Application account. In addition, a detailed list of the portfolio requirements is always available on the Tisch website .

A female student taking a photograph.

K.I.S.S. (Keep It Short and Simple)

Not too long ago, when I was making my own film portfolio, I remember feeling like I was creating the most important piece of my life. For some reason, I felt as though my five-minute short film needed to be the most beautiful, profound, and cinematic thing my admissions representative would ever see if I had any chance of getting in. I want to let you know that this is not the case. Your portfolio film does not have to be your pièce de résistance.

Use Your Five Minutes, Six Pages, or 15 Images to Tell a Simple Story

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to create beautiful cinematography, if there’s a bit of background noise in one of your shots, or if you don’t have access to a fancy camera. There’s a popular saying about the Tisch film program: “You can be admitted without having ever picked up a camera.” The saying is a bit dated because nowadays we have powerful cameras built into our cell phones, but the idea behind it still holds true. Don’t fixate on all the technical aspects of filmmaking; you’ll learn all that when you get to Tisch. The creative submission is all about telling a story in the best way you know how.

Students working together around a camera.

Talk About Yourself

Last, but certainly not least, talk about yourself. What are your interests outside of filmmaking? Where do you see yourself in five years? What is one thing you couldn’t live without? One of my favorite parts about the film portfolio is that it gives you so many opportunities to talk about yourself. The people who read your application genuinely want to know more about the person behind the film.

There Are No Right or Wrong Answers. Just Let Them Know What an Amazingly Cool Person You Are!

Now go forth and create some amazing creative portfolios! If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to the Admissions Ambassadors or contact Film and TV Undergraduate Admissions .

Submit Creative Materials

The NYU Tisch School of the Arts Application for IMA involves two major components:

File the  Common Application

A couple of days after you submit the Common App, you will receive an email from NYU with a personalized link to the Artistic Review portal, where you can submit all creative materials. This portal will go live in the early fall.  Your creative materials will be DUE ONE WEEK after the specific  deadline  for the application type you are applying for (ie. Early Decision I, II, Regular Decision, Internal or External Transfer). If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected]. Please be mindful of these deadlines. Your application for admission will not be considered unless you submit your creative materials.

Creative Materials Submission Requirements

Part 1: statement.

Please submit a document (PDF or DOC) with brief explanations of what you are submitting as creative materials. Please also include a short statement (about 100 words) about an example of interactive media that appeals to you. Can you describe a project idea that you would like to accomplish here at IMA, NYU? It’s okay if you don’t know how you would go about building it yet.

PART 2: CREATIVE MATERIALS

Please submit any work that shows the skills, creativity, curiosity, or generosity that you could bring to the emerging interactive forms we are inventing at IMA. We know that creativity does not just happen in art class so we want to read things you wrote, see any of your work, your musings, your tinkerings and experiments in any discipline.

This can be artwork, programming, DIY projects, songs or poetry you wrote, projects you were involved in, anything you made, the toaster you took apart to see how it worked, the treehouse you built, the videography you captured for the drama club, the activist work you spearheaded, to name a few.

If you have a personal website to show your work, you can simply share the URL. Another option is to upload individual files (jpgs, pdfs).

There are no minimum or maximum number of works or any particular mediums that we prefer or require. If you have a personal website to show your work, you can simply share the URL.

PART 3: INTRODUCTORY VIDEO

Use a webcam or smart phone to record yourself. We are not looking for special effects, as long as we can see and hear you clearly.  What are your areas of interest, or things that you care about, that might serve as content for future IMA projects?  What impact do you hope the work you do has? Keep it simple and show us your personality.  Please upload your video as a part of your online creative materials.

Limit: 1-2 minutes.

PART 4: RESUME (OPTIONAL)

You may also submit a resume if you would like, though this is entirely optional. Please include your work experience, activities throughout high school, artistic accomplishments, and any other unique qualities.

Creative Writing (MFA)

Program description.

The MFA Program in Creative Writing consists of a vibrant community of writers working together in a setting that is both challenging and supportive. This stimulating environment fosters the development of talented writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The program is not defined by courses alone, but by a life built around writing.

Through innovative literary outreach programs, a distinguished public reading series, an exciting public student reading series, special literary seminars with visiting writers, and the production of a high-quality literary journal, students participate in a dynamic literary community actively engaged in all aspects of the literary arts—writing, reading, teaching, publishing and community outreach. Students also have the opportunity to enjoy America's most literary terrain; New York University is situated in the heart of Greenwich Village, a part of the city that has always been home to writers.

The MFA in Creative Writing is designed to offer students an opportunity to concentrate intensively on their writing. This program is recommended for students who may want to apply for creative writing positions at colleges and universities, which often require the MFA degree. The MFA program does not have a foreign language requirement.

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit the  general application requirements , which include:

  • Academic Transcripts
  • Test Scores  (if required)
  • Applicant Statements
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
  • Letters of Recommendation , and
  • A non-refundable  application fee .

See Creative Writing for admission requirements and instructions specific to this program.

Additional Program Requirements

A creative special project in poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction consisting of a substantial piece of writing—a novel, a collection of short stories or essays, a memoir, a work of literary nonfiction, or a group of poems—to be submitted in the student’s final semester. The project requires the approval of the student’s faculty adviser and of the director of the CWP.

The MFA degree may also be earned through the Low Residency MFA Writers Workshop in Paris. Under this model, degree requirements remain the same, although Craft courses and Workshops take the form of intensive individualized courses of study with the faculty, including three substantial packet exchanges of student work per semester. All students earning the MFA degree through the low-residency program must also participate in five ten-day residencies in Paris, which involve a diverse series of series of craft talks, lectures, readings, special events, faculty mentorship meetings, and professional development panels.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

  • Graduate students in the Creative Writing Program at NYU work intensively with faculty mentors in writing workshops and individual conferences to learn and master the basic elements of the craft of fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry.
  • Students are expected to read widely and deeply, and to acquire a broad practitioner’s knowledge of literature in their declared concentration (poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction).
  • Students are taught to read carefully and critically, and in doing so learn to read as writers. By studying great novels, poems, and works of literary nonfiction by other writers, students learn how to write their own.
  • The two-year program of intensive study culminates in the completion of a creative thesis— a novel, a collection of stories or essays, or a collection of poems. The thesis manuscript, ideally, is a working draft of a first book. Many program alumni go on to publish books and win awards for their writing.

Grading and GPA Policy

Nyu policies, graduate school of arts and science policies, program policies.

To qualify for the degree, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.0, must complete a minimum of 24 points with a grade of B or better, and may offer no more than 8 points with a grade of C (no more than 4 points with a grade of C in creative writing workshops). A student may take no more than 36 points toward the degree.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Creative Project Manager Resume

In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.

  • Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
  • Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
  • Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
  • Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
  • Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
  • Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.
  • Including personal information. Avoid including any personal information such as age, marital status, or religious beliefs.

Key takeaways for a Creative Project Manager resume

Application Requirements

There are a number of things to accomplish—and deadlines to be aware of—when applying to graduate or professional school. Understanding sooner rather than later what to do and when to do it can help make the application process less daunting. Below you’ll find some general information and insights to help make your first steps toward applying to an NYU graduate program a bit easier.

First Things First

Common application requirements, additional application requirements, deadlines and decisions.

Virtual Office Hours: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern In-Person Drop-in Hour s:  Monday, Wednesday - Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Email: [email protected] Phone: 212-992-GRAD (4723)

The first thing to understand when applying to an NYU graduate or professional program is that each graduate school, center, or institute—and their individual departments and programs in many cases—determines its own application requirements. While this page provides a general introduction to applying to NYU, the information here may or may not apply to your specific program. Therefore, it is extremely important for you to speak directly with the admissions counselors at your school and program of interest. When you determine the NYU program that’s right for you, don’t wait to reach out.

There are a handful of items that, in many cases, are common across graduate school applications. It’s worth repeating, however, that you should get in touch with your school and program directly to learn exactly what your application requires. Some more common application items include:

  • Letter(s) of Recommendation: Some programs ask for one. Others may ask for up to four. There may also be specific expectations about who should write these letters, but in general they should come from individuals who know you well and are able to speak directly to your abilities, accomplishments, and potential.
  • Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement/Personal Essay: This is your chance to tell admissions who you are, explain your goals (both academic and professional), and share the ways in which the program will benefit by bringing you in. It’s possible that the program may have a more specific prompt or ask you to address a specific question or series of questions.
  • Transcripts and Degrees: Since you’re taking your academics to the next level, you need to prove that you’ve successfully completed the previous level(s). The graduate or professional program to which you’re applying will usually determine the transcripts and degree(s) you’re expected to provide. Applying to a master’s program commonly requires a bachelor’s degree and transcripts from all undergraduate institutions. Similarly, applying to a PhD or other doctoral program may require a master’s degree and transcripts from all graduate institutions.
  • English Language Proficiency Exam: If you’re an international applicant, or you completed your previous degree outside the United States at an institution where English is not the language of instruction, you may be required to submit scores from an English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE). There are a number of ELPEs out there. Make sure you’re taking the right one by contacting your program’s graduate admissions office.
  • Application Fee: Application fees vary by school and program. Get in touch with your program’s graduate admissions office if you have questions.

Depending on the program you’re interested in, there may be some requirements in addition to—or in place of—the more common ones listed above. You’ll often encounter these additional requirements when applying to programs in the medical, legal, or artistic fields, but they’re not limited to those areas. While your program’s graduate admissions office will be able to tell you exactly what you need to submit with your application, you can learn about a few of them here:

  • Entrance Exam(s): While graduate school entrance exams might be considered common by some, exactly which exam you might be required to take can vary across programs. The most common exam is the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), but the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), LSAT (Law School Admission Test), and MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) are also quite well known.
  • Creative Submission(s): Even though portfolio submissions and auditions are common when applying to an arts program, others may also ask you to provide writing samples, musical scores, or video submissions. These requirements give you the chance to display your abilities and show programs firsthand why they should admit you.
  • Interviews: You may be asked to sit for an in-person interview with one or more individuals from your program. Like a job interview, these conversations give you the chance to introduce yourself to the people you’ll be working with and answer questions about your academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Résumé or CV: You may be expected to submit a résumé or CV that showcases your academic and/or professional experiences, particularly those that are most relevant to your field of study. A résumé or CV is also an opportunity to share your research experience and academic publications, which may be required for certain research-based programs.

Application deadlines and admissions decision dates are quite varied across NYU’s graduate and professional schools, centers, and institutes. Application deadlines depend on a number of factors, including the program you’re applying to, when you’re planning to start, and whether you plan to be a full- or part-time student. Additionally, early decision applications have a different deadline than regular decision applications. Talk to your admissions counselor and make sure you understand your program’s application deadlines.

Like application deadlines, admissions decision dates vary across NYU. Admissions decisions also depend on the program and starting term as well as the schedules of individual schools, centers, or institutes. Some programs have set admissions decision dates, while others provide time frames or utilize rolling decisions. Your admissions counselor will be able to give you an idea of when you can expect to receive your admissions decision.
