Government of Canada invests in community projects to advance health equity

The Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced an investment of over $3.2 million through the Intersectoral Action Fund (ISAF) for 16 additional projects (link to backgrounder) based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These projects aim to improve health conditions and the systems and structures that shape them, helping everyone in Canada reach their full health potential.

In recent years, communities across Canada have faced complex public health challenges that have highlighted the need to improve the  preparedness and resiliency of our health and social systems.

Today, the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced an investment of over $3.2 million through the Intersectoral Action Fund (ISAF) for 16 additional projects based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These projects aim to improve health conditions and the systems and structures that shape them, helping everyone in Canada reach their full health potential.

ISAF was launched in 2021 to support capacity strengthening in communities by advancing intersectoral action on social determinants of health, such as income, social status, racism, and healthy child development. Since its launch and with today’s announcement, ISAF will have provided funding to 43 projects in communities across Canada. From addressing the intersections of poverty and racism in Saskatchewan through a project led by the Saskatoon Poverty Reduction Partnership (via the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre), to supporting healthy child development in Atlantic Canada through the promotion of a Mental Health in All Policies approach (via the  Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities), ISAF supports community level projects led by change-makers across Canada.

Bringing together communities to help address social determinants of health is part of the government’s commitment to advance health equity in Canada. This means helping to give everyone the same opportunities to be healthy, no matter who they are or where they live. Working with community members, stakeholders and decision-makers contributes to building a solid foundation for improving the wellbeing of communities and preparing them to face current and future health challenges.

Quick facts

Social determinants of health refer to the broad range of social, economic and environmental factors that relate to an individual's place in society (such as gender, race, income, education, or employment) and that determine individual and population health. These determinants are shaped by the distribution of wealth, power, and opportunities within and between populations.

Intersectoral action refers to the ways that different groups and sectors of society work together to enhance the health of our communities. ISAF supports communities to strengthen capacity for such action and helps address the social determinants of health and health inequities.

Twenty-seven projects received approximately $4.5 million through ISAF in 2021-22 and 2022-23. These projects, based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, addressed the root causes of long-standing community health challenges or those heightened by COVID-19, and implemented activities that  advanced intersectoral initiatives to expand their  impact.

ISAF launched a Call for Applications on June 18, 2024. This Call for Applications aims to support intersectoral policy action on the social determinants of health and community resilience. Specifically, the current funding opportunity will support projects that integrate health, equity and wellbeing considerations into local decision-making, and promote positive change. The first stage of the solicitation closed on July 25, 2024.

Accenture and Google Cloud Advance AI Adoption and Cybersecurity with Fortune 500 Companies

Companies helping clients across industries safely scale ai projects and reinvent business operations, 45% of joint client projects have moved from gen ai proof-of-concepts to production.

NEW YORK and SUNNYVALE, Calif; Aug. 29, 2024 – Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Google Cloud today announced that their strategic alliance is advancing solutions for enterprise clients and seeing strong momentum across industries in two critical and related areas: generative AI and cybersecurity.

As part of the announcement today, the two companies are increasing their investments in services that support businesses through every stage of their gen AI projects, including providing the expertise to determine optimal use cases, piloting projects for strategic innovation and deploying the engineering prowess needed to scale the technology and secure the enterprise. With cybersecurity as a core pillar of the partnership, Accenture and Google Cloud are also deepening their security work as clients adapt to new risks unique to gen AI, including securing model data, managing cyberattacks, and delivering remediation services that minimize breach impact and enable faster recovery.

As a result of the Accenture and Google Cloud generative AI Center of Excellence (CoE), which launched in December 2023, 45% of joint client projects have moved from gen AI proof-of-concepts to production. With today’s announcement, the companies will further increase support for clients as they use AI to optimize critical business functions, address complex industry needs and protect against sophisticated cybersecurity threats.

Accelerating Enterprise Adoption of Gen AI Through the joint gen AI CoE, Accenture and Google Cloud have quickly delivered new gen AI solutions, managed services, and more than 60 joint industry accelerators. These accelerators are based on Accenture’s hundreds of gen AI use cases and help clients solve complex challenges across industries, such as optimizing supply chains to improve product distribution, enhancing retail experiences to increase purchase conversion rates, and automating document processing to increase efficiency.

As one of the largest financial institutions in Brazil, Banco BV called on Accenture and Google Cloud to reinvent their customer experience with gen AI.

Gabriel Ferreira, CEO, Banco BV, said, “The GenCore project, developed by Banco BV, Accenture, and Google Cloud, uses AI to create hyper-personalized interactions with customers, making communication 80% faster and 100 times more personalized. Fully anchored in AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, this advancement reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence in customer service.”

Accenture and Google Cloud have also provided clients with cloud infrastructure and AI models to successfully build and scale multiple types of AI workloads. With access to Google’s latest tensor processing units (TPUs) and NVIDIA’s graphics processing units (GPUs), clients have been able to run their most demanding gen AI applications, while models like Gemini 1.5 Flash have delivered cost-effective performance completing high-volume, high-frequency tasks at global scale.

To achieve this, many clients have used Vertex AI as the unified platform providing a single surface to train, test, and tune both Gemini and third-party models, enabling clients to more efficiently bring gen AI applications to production, and to monitor the models powering them for input skew and drift.

For example, Radisson Hotel Group, a global leading hotel chain with a footprint in more than 95 countries, used Vertex AI and Gemini models to optimize its advertising workflows. By training AI models on extensive datasets stored in BigQuery, the company created personalized advertisements at scale, boosting the productivity of their ad teams by more than 50% while increasing revenue from AI-powered campaigns by more than 20%, enhancing the differential value they offer to the hotel owners.

Powering Security with Gen AI and Threat Intelligence Accenture and Google Cloud have also deepened their work to help clients transform security operations, delivering solutions to hundreds of enterprise clients over the past year to strengthen their security posture and reduce costs.

Accenture’s managed extended detection and response (MxDR) offering is integrated with Google Security Operations, which features security-specific gen AI platform capabilities from Google Cloud and gen AI operational capabilities from Accenture. Additionally, the joint service is now supplemented with frontline intelligence from Mandiant, combined with Accenture’s crisis management and consulting teams, enabling customers to quickly identify and respond to advanced cyber threats.

As enterprises navigate the complexity of gen AI, it is essential that they embed strong cybersecurity practices at every level of their organizations for ongoing business reinvention, using tools like MxDR to stay ahead of sophisticated threats. For example, after a significant cyber breach, an international retailer successfully improved its security posture and strengthened its detection and response effectiveness by adopting the MxDR solution.

Accenture’s Investments to Deliver Google Cloud AI Accenture and Google Cloud are also investing in client services to support every stage of a gen AI project, including capabilities to rapidly prototype, assess AI readiness, and build the correct foundation for modernizing business applications and customer experiences with gen AI. In the past 12 months, Accenture has doubled its Google Cloud certifications to address the rising demand for Google Cloud technology, and its experts have been accredited with Google Cloud’s new Gen AI Skills badge.

DOE Consortium Awards $3 Million for 6 Projects To Advance Heliostat Technology and Workforce for Commercial Readiness

Successful projects will help lower cost of concentrating solar-thermal power and support the next generation of highly trained workers.

Heliostats are large mirrors that track the sun to reflect and direct its rays—and they are critical for efficient, cost-effective concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) plants. When hundreds or thousands of heliostats work in tandem, they concentrate enough sunlight to produce high temperatures, which CSP plants harness to generate utility-scale electricity or store for later use.

Recognizing the crucial role heliostats play at large-scale CSP facilities, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Heliostat Consortium (HelioCon) awarded a combined $3 million across six projects to innovate heliostat controls, deployment, and workforce training. Led by universities and industry, the project teams will work closely with DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories, which co-lead the consortium.

To meet federal electricity cost goals for CSP facilities—5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for dispatchable CSP configurations or 2 cents/kWh for thermal production—researchers need to realize significant techno-economic improvements for heliostats.

"A heliostat field represents 30%–50% of the direct cost of CSP facilities and a big part of operation and maintenance costs," said Guangdong Zhu, HelioCon executive director and senior researcher at NREL. "Lowering the cost of heliostats usually means reducing their upfront manufacturing and installation costs or improving their performance and reliability in the field."

Several of HelioCon's selected projects (summarized below) have the potential to chip away at heliostat costs through maintenance and control improvements. Several also aim to create new educational programs to prepare the heliostat workforce to bring these and future innovations to industry.

"We're excited to see that several of these projects address education," said Margaret Gordon, who co-leads HelioCon and manages the CSP program at Sandia National Laboratories. "Developing support to establish a well-trained and knowledgeable heliostat workforce could reduce costs while at the same time providing economic benefits to local communities."

Six Projects Receive Funding To Advance Heliostat Performance and Develop the CSP Workforce

Descriptions of the six funded projects are as follows:

Solar Field Control Software

Current control systems for heliostat solar fields lack standardization and reuse among stakeholders who develop central receiver solar power plants. Facility developers create systems from scratch, and there is no major push to share common functions, features, and software libraries due to diverse heliostat, field, and receiver configurations. This increases costs and development timelines for solar field control systems. This project aims to solve this issue by developing an advanced heliostat field control system with multiple modules for various required functions that is adaptable to different heliostat or solar field configurations to reduce costs and enhance performance over today's technology.

Soiling on Heliostats Estimated by Shaded and Unshaded Scatterometry

• DKA Design (lead)

Mirror soiling reduces the energy delivered to concentrating solar power and thermal receivers and requires resource-intensive cleaning, which can abrade mirrors or even break heliostats. This project will develop a centralized, low-labor method to measure the decrease in mirror specular reflectance in a commercial-scale solar field due to soiling and degradation, using imaging data from existing and centralized heliostat control system sensors. If successful, the new technique will eliminate regular, manual in-field mirror measurements. Additionally, the team may increase mirror soiling data density, frequency, and accuracy to support control system fidelity and optimize cleaning schedules.

A Brighter Future: Education and Outreach for Small-Scale Concentrating Solar on Urban Brownfields

This project will uncover and address the root cause of gaps in educational training opportunities in concentrating solar thermal (CST) technologies, with an emphasis on community integration. While four-year institutions offer scattered undergraduate- and graduate-level classes that touch on CST, many only include a brief overview or emphasize photovoltaics over CST in solar-focused units or courses. Where CST topics are included, presentations tend to be highly and exclusively technical, which oversimplifies the economic and sociological elements of both the applications and site selection that are crucial to expanding CST implementation. To that end, this project will develop generalizable insights and a publicly available toolkit that two- and four-year institutions can use to create a sustainable community of future CST researchers, innovators, and practitioners.

PROMETHEUS: Predictive and Optimized Control of Heliostats for Future Solar Fields

The PROMETHEUS project aims to develop an innovative tool to improve real-time heliostat control and aiming in the solar field. The tool will optimize the aiming strategies accounting for the impact of flux intensity on receiver lifetime; the actual status of the heliostats (i.e., soiling distribution, broken mirrors, drivers); and required driver power consumption during transient operation. Ultimately, the tool will lead to better control of heat flux on receivers, reducing their degradation and risk of failure.

Precision Angle Measurement System for Enhanced Heliostat Performance and Cost Reduction

• University of Nevada, Las Vegas (lead)
• BriteSource Technologies.

This project aims to improve the annual performance of heliostat fields through the development of a cutting-edge measurement instrument called the Operating Surface Angle Measurement System (OSAMS). OSAMS is designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of heliostat design, prototyping, and field performance evaluation by enabling precise measurement of various parameters that affect the accuracy of heliostat reflective beams. By synchronizing measurements from sensors to heliostat tracking algorithms, OSAMS provides insights into relative surface normal differences across the system. In this way, it can facilitate the detection of changes in reflective angles under typical operating conditions, including the effects of gravity, thermal dynamics, and wind deflection.

Advancing University Level Education on Heliostat Design and Operation

• Northeastern University (lead).

This project aims to develop educational, research, and student outreach opportunities in heliostat and CSP technology. Using targeted classroom instruction and undergraduate-level research projects, the project team will incorporate heliostat education into course syllabi and homework assignments on concentrating solar energy—ultimately making it a part of Northeastern University's engineering curriculum.
