Making Inferences using “My Lucky Day”

Making inferences is an important skill that learners need to have as they comprehend text. Making inferences takes comprehension to a deeper level than just the surface.

Why Making Inferences Can be Tricky

Now, making inferences can be tricky for some learners.

Here’s why: It requires that learners dig deeper, beyond just the words of the text to draw conclusions about character’s feelings, thoughts, or other concepts.

For example, the text might say: “We get to go to the zoo again! I can’t wait to see the tigers!”

I could ask the learner questions like: “Has this person ever been to the zoo?” or “How do you think this person feels about going to the zoo?”

These two questions require learners to infer or read between the lines because the text doesn’t exactly answer those questions word for word. Often, when asked questions that require thinking deeper, we are met with blank stares and the answer, “I don’t know because it doesn’t say.”

Making Inferences with “My Lucky Day”

Today, I’d like to explore inferring with one of my favorite picture books of all time, My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza. Now, inferring happens when learners take what they know {their prior knowledge} and combine it with what the text and/or picture imply.

If you’re looking for more books that can help with this comprehension strategy, you’ll want to visit my book list for making inferences and predictions !

First, you’ll want to have learners take the printable page {download found at the END of this post} and fold it up so only the first picture shows, like you see in the image above.

As you read the book, stop reading the book in the spots that match the pictures on the printable page. For each section, you’re going to ask something like: “What do you think is happening in this picture/part of the story?” or “How does the character feel now?”

Learners can write their answer or draw their answer in each section. If you’re working one-on-one or with a very a small group of learners who might not be able to write their answer, you could do some of the writing. I used this with my Kindergartner, so we shared the writing . {We used her Kindergarten Spelling Folder for this, too.}

A great follow-up question after is “WHY do you think that?” Encourage learners to think about their own knowledge and the text/pictures from the book to support their inference. We did this through the entire book at each stopping place.

The thing I like about this book is that learners will also do a little synthesizing.  Their thinking will change and grow as the story unfolds.

My best friend and I went to all the teachers to distribute toffees and we had a great time there. Moreover, it was an incredible feeling. My friends were all singing for me and eager to come to my birthday party later in the evening.

My Birthday Party

The birthday at my school was memorable but the birthday party at my home made the day even more memorable. Also, my mother invited all my friends from school and the colony to the party.

I received so many presents and we played a lot of games. We played games like musical chairs, tag, egg-and-spoon races, and more. There were so many songs playing so everyone did a special dance too.

The highlight of my birthday party was definitely my huge birthday cake. As I love superheroes, my mother got the cake customized with the superhero theme. It was very tasty too and in my favourite flavour.

I spent a lot of time with my family and friends that day. Everyone liked the return gifts as well and went home with a big smile on their faces.

The Scholars program began at the University of Mississippi in 2001, and continues to grow and thrive with each new cohort of students who join the Luckyday community. In 2010, the Luckyday Residential College was officially dedicated in honor of Frank Rogers Day’s legacy of service and generosity, and a statue of Mr. Day was unveiled in the archway of the Luckyday Residential College.

In addition to supporting each student with up to $24,000 in scholarship aid over four years, the programs provide opportunities for personal and professional growth, connection to a robust community of scholars, significant service experiences, and intentional leadership development. To date, thousands of Mississippi students have benefitted from the support offered through the Luckyday Scholars Program.

Luckyday Scholarship for Incoming Freshman

The Luckyday Scholarship is awarded competitively to  80 first-time freshmen  in the amount of $24,000 ( $6,000 per year for four years ).  Applicants must:

• Be a Mississippi resident
• Have a minimum overall high school GPA of 3.00
• Maintain good standing with the program by meeting all scholarship requirements (details below)
• By March 1, complete the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid – FAFSA

The Luckyday Community College Transfer Scholarship is awarded competitively to  25 community college transfer students  in the amount of $12,000 ( $6,000 per year for two years ). Applicants must:

• Have completed a minimum of 48 college credit hours 
• Have a minimum 3.0 college GPA on all college credits
• Complete the 2024-2025   Transfer and Community College Student Scholarship Application (priority deadline March 1, 2024)
• Complete the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid – FAFSA

What are the program requirements once selected as a Scholar?

Luckyday Scholars must:

• If a Scholar falls below this requirement, they will be placed on probation for the following semester, and routinely meet with program staff.
• Luckyday Community College Transfer Scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 resident GPA on all coursework attempted at the University of Mississippi.
• Participate in at least 10 hours of volunteer service  per semester.
• Attend general semester meetings in the fall and spring to learn about program opportunities related to leadership, service, and community connections.
• Enroll in Luckyday-specific sections of EDHE 105 (first year Scholars) or EDHE 305 (transfer Scholars) during the fall semester of their first year. These courses introduce students to campus resources and connect them with staff and faculty at the University of Mississippi. The courses also give students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in the areas of leadership, service, and connection to their community.
• Living as part of a community allows students to build friendships and connect with other Luckyday Scholars during the first year. Upperclass student mentors also help new students navigate the transition from high school to college.

In addition, students engage in numerous social and academic programs each semester, which aids students in their growth as leaders and members of a vibrant community. !

Actually, it was my first time to try fishing, so I was kind of nervous and excited.

While I was about to give up, the fishing rod in my hand was suddenly shaking hard. Did I catch the big fish? I asked the question in my mind and hoped that my guess was right. Oh, yes, “I got a huuuuuge fish, come over here to help me, Dad! I couldn’t pull it up. ” Everybody heard me crying and rushed to the river side to help me pull out the big fish.

Everyone in my family was shocked by what I caught. I never thought I was able to get such a pretty big fish. The feeling of catching the first big fish was the same as the feeling of winning the first prize in the lottery game. I thought I was lucky enough because I didn’t have any experience of catching fish. Even though I didn’t get any other surprises from the deep river in the rest time, I was very satisfied with the unexpected harvest. To me, it was a lucky day and it gave me an unforgettable memory in my life.

By the time I moved my daughter into her freshman dorm last August, she’d had it with my “helping.” We stood in the tiny space cluttered with labeled boxes, bedding, an ottoman and a totally impractical but everyone-has-one headboard. 

“Let me hang up your pictures,” I said. “No, I’m good,” she protested. When I reached for the nails, she pushed back harder. “You don’t get it. I don’t want your help.” 

I chalked up her reaction to nerves — hers and mine. We look alike, talk alike and think alike. This may be our superpower, but it is also our kryptonite. Miscommunication defines a lot of our back and forth, and passive-aggressive behavior (hers and mine) runs amuck. A slammed car door — or, this time, the hammer tossed back into a box — tells me all I need to know.

In hindsight, Emily’s frustration was justified. For over a decade, I’d made an occupation out of helping her. Guilt and desperation can make a mother “do too much.” (Her words, not mine.) 

Emily had high-risk cancer when she was 4. Her odds of survival were 50/50. We spent more than 300 nights in Boston Children’s Hospital staring at the infamous Citgo sign and trudging through a protocol of care that threatened to kill her before the cancer did. We were lucky. She lived, but a lot of kids like her die.   

The treatment left her legally deaf and damaged her endocrine system, kidneys, height and fertility. Still, the only thing she hated more than hair that refused to grow back was the way I showed up to fix all of her problems. 

For the next fourteen years, I convinced myself it was my responsibility to keep her alive. After all, I was the one who’d shrugged off her knee pain (a softball-sized tumor rested on her left adrenal gland and caused pressure) as growing pains. Doctors dismissed my self-blame, assuring me there was nothing I could’ve done, but I didn’t let myself off the hook so easily. My one job was to keep her safe, and I’d failed.  

Now, on this, my second-chance at mothering her, I needed to up my game. Every decision felt urgent and monumental. 

Cancer recovery books made me paranoid, so I overhauled her diet, replacing SpaghettiOs with chickpea pasta and organic tomato sauce. “This is awful,” she said, and refused to eat it. In middle school, she stashed empty Dorito wrappers in her dresser drawer and backpack. Her pushback was in gestures, not in words. Popping a red frosting flower into her mouth knowing red dye made me cringe amused her.

If mother-daughter relationships can be complicated, our tangled mess of emotion and trauma took complicated to a new level. No one told me the best way to mother a kid who’d had cancer. I did my best every day. It was too much and never enough. 

My post-cancer fallout duties included things like picking up prescriptions, making school accommodations, handling health insurance disputes, scheduling medical appointments, and finding a therapist for a teenager who didn’t want therapy. Yet I was also responsible for normal-mom things like not letting her quit soccer or a job she hated, caring for her sister, and holding firm to a curfew time. 

I was the caregiver, bad cop, pseudo-doctor, education advocate, phone location lurker, and on-call nurse while side-hustling as her mother. She resented all of it. In turn, I resented her lack of appreciation for everything I did. I said things I didn’t mean. She did, too. 

On my way home from freshman drop-off , I wondered if we’d ever talk or text. Emily held the power on everything now — her health choices, social life, nutrition. And, her engagement with me. 

I thought I’d be terrified. Instead, I felt relief. 

The proverbial gun to my head for the past 14 years rested on the car dashboard. I could see it but no longer felt threatened by it. My guess is Emily felt similar but different. Maybe more like a caged bird being set free. 

In the passenger seat flying along the highway, I scrolled my Facebook feed and felt weird for not sobbing like fellow moms, heartbroken that their baby had left the nest . For days, I waited for that feeling to come. 

Instead, something miraculous happened. 

Little by little, day by day, the best part of me — the part that had been buried under the unrealistic expectations of mothering a sick kid for 14 years — perked up. Just a little at first, in the form of a good morning mood and a pot of coffee I didn’t need to save a cup of for Emily. 

Not having direct access to Emily forced me to surrender the details of her day to her. Decisions that had always struck me as high-stakes were, to her, just part of life. I didn’t feel the need to call and make sure she took her medicines. And I knew if I did, she’d get aggravated at the implication I didn’t trust or believe she was capable of taking care of herself. 

For weeks, I didn’t completely trust the feeling of freedom. Allowing Emily to take care of herself felt reckless, irresponsible. Did normal parents feel like this? Or just cancer parents?

It didn’t matter. I shifted my focus to little pleasures that for years, I’d been too overwhelmed and distracted to enjoy. I replaced headspace about what I’d make her for dinner, or if she had enough gas in her car with debating what Netflix series I wanted to watch. 

My softening made room for me to really get to know Emily — a funny kid who can always justify buying another crop top. And Emily got to know me too — a woman with good intentions who’d made a lot of mistakes because I’m human. I could be “just” her mom. She could be “just” my daughter. 

Every day at school, Emily called, texted or FaceTimed me. I thought she’d stop after finding her place at school, but she didn’t. I felt special, loved, forgiven. If my mood was off, I’d wait to connect. She did the same thing. The time allowed one of us to let a mood pass — one that had nothing to do with the other — but had the potential to trigger us. 

Our talks were light, lacking the tension that defined so many talks of before. She amused me with tales about weekend jaunts around campus and her lack of willpower to pass up dining hall pizza. “It just calls to me every night,” she joked. Our running joke was if she’d break down and hang something on her bare dorm room walls. “It bothers you so much more than it bothers me,” she said.  

Emily shared one of her Spotify playlists (who knew she loved Stevie Nicks? ), and texted me in real time while we watched Joey on “The Bachelor.” It turns out, the space apart had brought us closer together. 

We were able to nurture our relationship outside of cancer, chronic health issues, mother control tendencies, and teenage nonsense (yes, even kids with medical conditions pull shenanigans). 

Most days, I wish for a do-over. A chance to tell my younger self to resist so much helping and fixing because nothing, especially Emily, is broken. But maybe realizations like that only come with time and space and hard-earned experience. And maybe where we are now is at least in part thanks to who I was then?

This summer is different than last. Emily does her thing, and I do mine. I don’t lurk on our shared location app anymore. We take day trips and go shopping together. She asks me to buy organic fruit and vegetables for the big salads she makes for dinner. 

Sometimes we hit bumps — like the way she tosses dishes into the dishwasher — but we bounce back after her text to me: sooooorrrrryyyyyy. 

I love when she’s home. And, I love when she goes back to school. I think the feeling is mutual. 

With the start of school just about here, I remind her to order her dorm essentials soon. “Yup,” she says as she heads to her bedroom. “I think this year, I’ll hang up pictures.”

My lucky day- narrative writing.

Lorraine, Please check out my post under writing about 5 paragraph essays. I explain 4-square in that post. I have the children create their own sheets now, because they don't get one on our state test...just a big box. I have them write the into in the middle of their paper. A big idea in the top of three boxes and the feeling/closing in the last box. They add details under the big ideas. If you have more questions I would love to help!

My Lucky Day

“Ah… What a lovely day and I had a good sleep last night,” I said. It was a sunny day. I checked the time to get ready to go to school. I took a big deep breath and felt relaxed. “Ah, just in time,” I said as I walked to the bathroom and washed and brushed my teeth slowly. I thought it took only about 10 minutes. I checked the time again and it was already 7:05. I said, “Oh my god! I’m late for school! I’m dead! ” My teacher would send me to the principal, as usual. Then, she would call my mom. My mom would kill me. So I rushed downstairs and ate my reakfast as fast as a gunshot. Suddenly, there was a bus horning madly outside my house. I stuffed my breakfast into my mouth and ran to the bus. I ran to a seat without looking at anybody. I didn’t say, “Hello,” to my mates. They greeted me but I ignored them. When I reached my seat, I looked down and saw something strange. I hadn’t worn my socks or shoes! I was wearing sandals! I said to myself, “I’m dead! ” I wanted to check if it was a dream so I slapped my face and looked at my feet again but I wasn’t dreaming. It was real. When I reached school, obody was wearing socks. I said to myself, “They are weird. Maybe they will also get into trouble,” I giggled to myself. I went into the classroom. My teacher looked at my sandals but he said nothing. I went to my desk and said, “Good morning! ” to my teacher. The teacher asked me, “What did you wear for Free Socks Day? ” I said, “I wore none. I’m dead! ” “No, today is Free Socks Day,” the teacher said. I felt really lucky, luckier than you can imagine. I went to recess and played soccer. I played better than usual. That day was my luckiest day.

Today was her lucky day. She was late for the bus. But the bus was late, too. So she didn't miss her bus. She was late for work. But her boss was late, too. So her boss didn't know that she was late. She didn't have any cash for lunch. But her friend had a two-for-one lunch coupon. So she got a free lunch. Her boss was feeling a little sick. He told everyone to take the afternoon off. She went to the park. A green piece of paper was under the park bench. She picked it up. It was a $5 bill. She looked around. Where did the money come from? There was no one around. She was the only one in the park. There were some birds and squirrels in the park. But this was not their money. This was her money. It was her lucky money. She went across the street to the liquor store. The lottery jackpot was worth $10 million. She bought five lottery tickets. She knew that one of them would be lucky. This was her lucky day.
