Finance Manager Resume Sample
Place education section wisely.
When you create your finance resume, where you place your education can matter. If you are new to the field with little experience, put your education first on your resume. For example, list your degrees in finance or related fields at the top. This shows your foundation in finance principles.
However, if you have been working for some time or have significant financial experience, your work history should come first. This highlights your practical skills in financial roles. Always include any finance-related certifications or ongoing education to show you are keeping your knowledge current.
Finance Director Resume Sample
Showcase analytical skills.
In finance, your ability to analyze data and make informed decisions is crucial. On your resume, provide examples of how you have used these skills. Include any financial reports you have prepared or contributed to, or any complex data you have analyzed that led to strong financial decisions.
Highlight any familiarity with finance-specific software or systems. This could include experience with accounting software or advanced proficiency in spreadsheet analysis, which are important in finance-related roles.
Investment Banking Analyst Resume Sample
Keep resumes concise.
For jobs in finance, keeping your resume to one page is best if you have under 10 years of relevant experience. Be clear and concise with your skills and work history. Your resume should be like a balance sheet, capturing the most important information without clutter.
If you are applying for a senior financial role and have more extensive experience, using two pages is acceptable. Ensure every section, including your work in finance, shows value and relevance to the role you are applying for.
Junior Financial Analyst Resume Sample
Detail regulatory knowledge.
Finance is unique because of its strict regulatory environment. You should show your understanding of relevant laws and ethical standards. Mention any experience you have managing finances under specific regulations or any compliance projects you have been a part of.
Also include any certifications in financial regulation or related areas. This could be certifications like a Series 7 or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. Practical knowledge of regulations is indispensable in finance careers.
Senior Financial Executive Resume Sample
Beat the resume screeners.
When you apply for finance roles, your resume might first be read by machines, not humans. These are called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). They scan your resume for keywords and phrases that match the job. To pass this first test, you need to know how it works.
Here are some tips:
- Use keywords from the job description. For finance positions, words like 'budgeting', 'forecasting', or 'financial analysis' are common. Include these terms if they match your experience.
- Be clear with your job titles and experiences. For example, 'finance manager' or 'accountant' should be plainly stated. Also, use simple terms to describe your duties and achievements. For instance, 'managed a budget of $100,000' is clear and understandable.
Financial Planning Specialist Resume Sample
Customize your finance resume.
When you apply for finance jobs, show the skills and experience you have that match what the role needs. This helps employers see you're a good fit. Focus on the specific tasks and tools you know that finance work often needs. Here's how you can do this:
Show the finance systems you're good at using, like QuickBooks or SAP , to manage accounts or money.
For jobs that need you to lead, talk about your experience with guiding teams. Say how many people were in your teams or if you gave talks to big bosses.
If you're coming from another job, find the tasks you did that are like what you'd do in finance. For example, if you managed a budget, even in a different job, that's important to mention.
Risk Management Consultant Resume Sample
Show achievements, not tasks.
When writing your finance resume, you need to focus on showing your achievements, not just listing your job tasks. Your resume should highlight how you made a positive impact in your role. This means turning every responsibility into an accomplishment that shows your value.
For example:
- Instead of saying 'Managed a small team,' you might say, 'Led a team of 5 to streamline financial processes, resulting in a 20% reduction in reporting errors.'
- Rather than 'Prepared weekly financial reports,' show the outcome, 'Developed a new report template that saved 10 hours of work per week and improved data accuracy.'
Treasury Analyst Resume Sample
Essential skills for finance specialists.
When you craft your finance resume, it's important to focus on the hard skills that show your capability in financial analysis and management. These skills tell employers you have what it takes to handle the job.
- Financial analysis
- Accounting principles
- Budget management
- Financial reporting
- Microsoft Excel
- ERP systems
- Quantitative analysis
- Risk assessment
- Tax preparation
- Regulatory compliance
You don't need to have every skill listed above, but include those that match your experience and the jobs you want. If you have worked with financial modeling or data analysis tools, make sure to highlight these. These skills can be part of a dedicated 'Skills' section or woven into your work experience descriptions. They help you pass the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that many companies use to filter resumes.
Remember, focus on skills that are specific to finance. For example, knowing SAP Financial Accounting is more relevant than basic computer skills. Always tailor your resume for the job you are applying for, and show clear examples of how you used these skills in your past roles.
Portfolio Manager Resume Sample
Show impact with numbers.
When you list your past work, adding numbers can make a big difference. Numbers help hiring managers see the exact value you can bring. Here's how to do it in finance:
- Include the size of budgets you managed or advised on. For example, 'Oversaw a portfolio worth $500,000 .' This shows you can handle important tasks with care.
- Talk about how you saved money. You could say, 'Cut yearly costs by 10% through better vendor deals.' This proves you can find ways to increase profits.
Think about the results of your work. Did you help your company grow? You might have numbers like 'Helped increase annual revenue by 15% .' Or did you make processes better? Say something like, 'Improved report generation speed by 30% , saving 5 hours each week.'
- Estimate the impact of your work on team performance. For instance, 'Led a finance team that beat quarterly targets by 20% .'
- Remember to include client or stakeholder satisfaction rates if you have them, such as 'Achieved a client satisfaction score of 95% .'
Use these ideas to think about your own numbers. Even if you're not sure, try to estimate based on your past work. Good numbers on a resume help you stand out.
Chief Financial Officer Resume Sample
Show leadership in finance roles.
When you apply for a job in finance, showing that you have led a team or been promoted is crucial. It tells hiring managers that you can handle responsibility and that you grow within your roles. Here's how you can show this on your resume:
- Include any titles that show you moved up, like 'Senior Analyst' if you started as an 'Analyst'. This shows growth.
- List any projects where you were in charge. Use phrases like 'Led a team of X to...' or 'Managed a budget of...'
Think about times when you took the lead, even if you weren't officially the boss. Maybe you trained new staff or led a key presentation. This shows you are ready to step up.
Financial Controller Resume Sample
Show leadership and promotions.
When applying for jobs in finance, it's important to show your growth within the field. This means including any promotions or leadership roles you've held. These details can make your resume stand out to hiring managers.
Think about your work history. Have you ever led a team or a project? Maybe you were promoted from a junior to a senior position. These are key experiences to include on your resume. Here are some ideas:
- Managed a team of 5 analysts to successfully deliver quarterly budget reports.
- Promoted from financial analyst to senior financial analyst after consistently surpassing quarterly targets.
Remember to include numbers and results. For example, mention if your leadership led to a 10% reduction in expenses or if your team’s work increased revenue by a certain percentage. This gives a clear picture of your impact in your roles.
Finance Consultant Resume Sample
Showcase leadership and growth.
When crafting your finance resume, highlighting your leadership roles and any promotions is crucial. These details can make a strong impact. Here's how you can show your growth in the finance field:
- Detail any times you led a team or project, using phrases like 'Led a team of X to...' or 'Managed a budget of...'
- Include any titles or roles that show a clear progression, for example, 'Promoted from junior accountant to senior accountant within two years'.
Think about moments when you took charge of a situation or inspired your team to meet a goal. Even if you weren't in a formal leadership role, you can still demonstrate leadership qualities. Consider these points:
- Did you ever mentor new employees or interns? Mention 'Mentored X number of interns to full-time roles.'
- Highlight any successful project where you played a key role, with phrases like 'Contributed to a project that resulted in a 20% increase in cost savings'.
Use these tips to show employers that you not only have the necessary finance skills but also the ability to lead and drive progress.

How to write an accounting & finance resume
Before you begin a financial analysis or report, you decide what will go into it. You should also know what elements your accounting and finance resume should include before you begin. Here are the parts necessary to create a winning resume:
- The resume header
- The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
- The employment history section
- The resume skills section
- The education section
The key to a successful resume is consistent tone, style, and message, but those elements should be adjusted for each job. How do you do that? Research. Find out about your prospective employer’s pain points but also the company’s structure, culture and business model. Incorporate that knowledge into every aspect of your resume so that you are speaking directly to your prospective boss.
A resume that raises your value in the eyes of hiring managers will:
- Focus on accomplishments , not tasks. The results of your actions—not simply that you acted—reveal the value you bring.
- Direct your message directly to the boss with the goal of answering the question: “Why should I hire you?”
- Use a resume template that makes a positive visual impression, since it will be the first impression the hiring manager will get.
- Include tailored keywords and phrases for each job that are designed to give you a better chance at avoiding the ATS filter.
Focus your analysis to beat the ATS
No matter how well-crafted your resume is, it won’t reach a human being if it falls victim to the Applicant Tracking System filter. You can increase your chances of beating this scanning and sorting software used by 99% of Fortune 500 companies with your analysis skills.
Carefully match the words and phrases in the job listing to your resume. This means personalizing your resume for each job. Spell out and include acronyms just in case and stick with standard section headings that the ATS recognizes.
Add this to ATS callout
For example, an accounting and finance job listing requires:
- “Three years’ experience”
- “Monitor company’s finances”
- “Experience with budgeting and forecasting”
- “Understanding of GAAP and finance regulations”
An ATS-optimized resume summary might read:
“Accounting and finance professional with three years’ experience with budgeting and forecasting. Adept at tracking company cash flow and monitoring all transactions for adherence to GAAP and finance regulations.”
To learn more about conquering the ATS, check out our article Resume ATS optimization .
The tried-and-true reverse chronological order resume is most likely to be your best-bet format. Why? Because it works and because it makes it easy for recruiters to find the information they seek.
If you are in a technology or specialty field and need to highlight niche or complex skills, you may want to use the functional resume format instead. Within this format, you can expand your skills section to show off your expertise and contract your employment history to a simple listing of employers or contract engagements.
Other life situations that call for different resume types are gaps in work history, first-time entry into the job market or career changing. Check out our alternate resume formats for more information on how to write resumes in those circumstances.
Accounting and finance is a detail-oriented, fairly conservative field. We recommend a professional template to project that image.
Your header is like the business card of your accounting and finance resume. Make your contact information accessible, professional, and legible.
- Full name and title . List your first and last name. Make sure you customize the job title to match each job listing.
- Professional email address . Use a clean format like [email protected] . Don’t use your current work email.
- Phone number . List a number where you can be readily contacted, with a professional voicemail greeting.
- Location . List only your city and state . Listing your street address unnecessarily exposes your personal information. Note 'Willing to Relocate' here if applicable.
- LinkedIn . If your LinkedIn profile is active, relevant, and shows your business network, include it here.
Don’t include:
- Date of birth : Not necessary and could potentially lead to age discrimination .
- Personal details : Marital status, social security number, passport number , etc.

You’re well more than a numbers-cruncher, and the summary section of your accounting and finance resume is where you can show that off. Here, you have 2-3 sentences to dig into that fraud you found or the creative budget you prepared. Tailor your highlighted achievement to each position to hook the hiring manager in.
Use action verbs —budgeted, analyzed, audited, reconciled—to kick off each bullet point.
Be sure to include a few glowing adjectives to describe your professional demeanor and attitude. Definitely pat yourself on the back, but avoid veering too far into bragging territory. The best summaries intrigue hiring managers, giving them something to follow up on in the interview and explaining what you will add to the company.
They don’t repeat your work history but provide a career overview. For example, “Career eagle-eyed accountant dedicated to responsible management of company’s finances to increase ROI and eliminate waste.”

Detail-oriented graduate with a degree in Accounting and Finance eager to apply classroom knowledge in Fortune 500 setting. Proficient in reconciliation, financial analysis, and budgeting. Strong analytical skills coupled with a solid understanding of accounting principles and financial management. Adaptable and quick to learn, with a commitment to accuracy and efficiency in all tasks.
CPA and finance professional with five years of experience budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis for technology company. Consistently deliver insightful financial reports to support strategic decision-making including financial recommendations resulting in reduced tax burden of $1.5 million.
Seasoned accounting and finance leader who drives strategic growth through financial analysis and understanding of business process. Oversee $4 million budget and provide financial insights to senior management to support decision-making and optimize resource allocation. Extensive experience in financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
The employment history section of your accounting and finance resume is really an analysis of your career progress and achievements. Beginning with your most recent position (here is where reverse chronological order comes in), you will create bulleted items that detail tangible outcomes, not responsibilities.
Start each item with a strong action word such as accounted, recommended, or managed and follow it with a phrase that describes your achievement. Use data, details, and dollar signs whenever possible. You are, after all, a person who deals with numbers all day.
Descriptions lacking in detail fall flat. Consider the following:
- “Collaborated on annual budgeting.”
- “Reconciled accounts.”
- “Followed all GAAP and financial regulations.”
- “Performed internal audit.”
A hiring manager is likely to think: “That sounds like the wording from the job description!” A dynamic work history section describes what you did in detail and what benefit your actions had for the accounting and finance department or the company as a whole.
Note the difference in these rewritten items:
- “Collaborated with department heads to determine financial needs and balance against projected spending allocation for $3 million subsidiary of multibillion-dollar conglomerate.”
- “Reconciled 10 accounts with more than 100 transactions per day, ensuring accurate accounting of all cash flow.”
- “Created process to review accounting activities to ensure strict adherence to GAAP and financial regulations.”
- “Conducted internal audit and presented recommendations to senior-level staff, resulting in increased accuracy and 10% reduction in time to reconcile accounts.”
Don’t be afraid to head to Thesaurus.com if inspiration for the perfect word is not coming. Just don’t veer too far from your everyday language. You want to sound genuine and professional.

How to write an accounting & finance resume with no experience
Accounting and finance professionals typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in one of those fields or a related one. When you write an accounting and finance resume with no experience, you can partly rely on what you learned in school, or your hard skills.
This professional knowledge will form the foundation upon which your career will build.
If you have held a part-time or summer position, even if it isn’t money-related, you demonstrated transferable skills such as time management, communication, and reliability.
Use these to illustrate your readiness for full-time finance work even though you have no direct experience .
Your skills section tells recruiters a few important things quickly. Because this is such a pointed part of your accounting and finance resume, they will know within seconds whether you have the attributes they seek.
The other key piece of information here is what you think are the most important skills for the job. These two factors mean you should curate this section carefully with a blend of hard and soft skills .
The soft skills most in demand by employers are time management, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, according to the Journal of Accountancy . The top hard skills are knowledge of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), Quickbooks, business intelligence software, and tax preparation software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and preparation of financial statements as well as data query and management ability and independent research skills, the staffing agency 4 Corners Resources says.
If you are having trouble deciding on your top skills, try putting the text from your resume and the job listing into a word cloud creator such as WordArt or WordClouds . That will show you which information appears most often.
Here’s what the skills box looks like in our accounting and finance resume template.
- Financial Reporting
- Financial Analysis
- ERP Systems
- Ability to Work Under Pressure
- Interpersonal Communication Skills
Remember to highlight examples of your skills and how you use them to achieve throughout your accounting and finance resume.
For example, in both your work history and summary, you can illustrate your:
- Attention to detail by recounting a time when you found what could have been a costly error
- Communication by describing how you gather information to create a budget
- Tax law knowledge by telling how you limited the company’s tax liability
The job description will guide you in deciding which skills to showcase.
The education section of your accounting and finance resume is a straightforward listing of your academic degrees. Accounting and finance jobs typically require at least a bachelor’s degree and some may prefer an MBA.
If you do have an advanced degree, you may leave out your high school diploma. Another item to leave off: your GPA, unless you just graduated and have a 4.0.
The section is also a great place to highlight:
- Training and certifications . If you are a CPA , list that after your name, but also include the details here. Add any other related webinars, trainings, or certificates in your field.
- Internships . Especially if you are early in your career, these college or post-college programs demonstrate your knowledge and experience.
- Professional development . Membership in trade associations, tax law groups, or any other organizations that help you grow as a financial professional belong here.
Below you will find an education section resume example as a formatting guide.
Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Manhattan College, New York September 2009 - May 2013
Even the numbers people need an art department to give their presentations the proper look. The layout and design of your accounting and finance resume are just as important because before a recruiter reads your resume, they will see it. That first look counts.
What impression do you want to give? Organized, neat, clear, and professional? Of course! The best way to do that is to keep it simple. Avoid over-designing or using too much color. Stick with easy-to-read fonts and 1-inch margins. Avoid cramming in too much text: Save something for the interview!
To save yourself the time and effort of formatting, use one of our expertly-designed resume templates .

How to format a financial analyst resume
For financial analysts, the reverse-chronological resume format is the most effective. It underscores your latest and most relevant experience, allowing recruiters to quickly assess your career progression and the impact you’ve made.
This format highlights your strengths, such as specific skills and quantifiable results--things financial analysis heavily relies on. Additionally, it’s easy for both Applicant tracking systems (ATS) and hiring managers to navigate.
Our tests confirm that fonts, colors, and resume length typically don’t cause problems with ATS parsing. What’s critical are the details like date formatting and bullet point usage, as these can impact how the software reads your resume. A well-structured resume isn’t just good for ATS but it also catches the eye of hiring managers with packed schedules.
Let's dive into the specifics of resume designs.
Resume order
When building a reverse-chronological resume, organize the sections in a straightforward, easy-to-follow order:
- Summary/Objective
- Professional experience
- Education & Certifications

Contact information
- Position your name, phone number, and professional email at the header of your resume .
- Align your job title with the position you’re applying for, and consider adding a short headline that highlights your financial skills.
- Add a link to your LinkedIn profile to display your professional network and notable accomplishments.

How To Write a Recent College Graduate Resume
Crafting an impactful resume can be challenging for recent graduates looking to establish themselves in their field. Lacking hands-on experience immediately places you at a disadvantage, but it’s possible to overcome this with the right content strategy. To attract potential employers, emphasize academic achievements, internships, and transferable skill sets that show you have the knowledge and talent to succeed in the position. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step of the resume-building process to aid you during the early phases of your career.
1. Write a dynamic profile summarizing your college graduate qualifications
To make a strong first impression on the hiring manager, you need a compelling opening summary that demonstrates why you’re the ideal candidate. Start by mentioning your degree and three to four skill sets that the company is looking for. Round out your paragraph with unique details that can help differentiate you from the crowded field of applicants.
For instance, if you’re targeting a position as a social media coordinator, emphasize your passion for developing engaging content that resonates with target audiences. If you’re looking for an entry-level role in finance, emphasize your talent for analyzing complex financial data to inform business decisions and strategies.
Strong Profile Example
A recent college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and experience in content creation, social media management, and brand strategy. Proven ability to drive engagement through targeted marketing campaigns. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for digital marketing.
Weak Profile Example
A recent graduate with a degree in marketing. Interested in social media marketing and content creation.
2. Add an accomplishment-driven professional college graduate experience section
This is often the most difficult resume section for recent graduates, as your work history is likely to be limited. That said, leveraging your academic achievements, internships, and volunteer experience is a great way to compensate. As you craft your bullet points, focus on demonstrating how you’ve successfully applied your industry skills in the early stages of your career. In the example below, the candidate showcases how they utilized their writing talents to support a nonprofit organization. Although this is an unpaid position, the experience is extremely valuable, as it shows that the applicant is capable of crafting impactful content for both articles and social media posts.

If you find yourself struggling to generate traction during the job search, consider obtaining an industry certification to help increase your chances of landing the interview.

4. List pertinent key college graduate skills
In today’s job market, most companies utilize some form of applicant tracking system (ATS) to identify qualified candidates. To pass the initial screening process, you need to incorporate industry skills that align with the needs of potential employers. For example, if you’re targeting an entry-level position as a financial analyst, you might highlight skills such as financial modeling, data visualization, and market research. Below, you’ll find a broad list of potential keywords you may encounter while pursuing entry-level job opportunities:
Key Skills and Proficiencies | |

What to Include in Your Resume
Tips for writing your resume, more resume and cover letter examples.
Are you interested in a job in finance, but have limited work experience? In addition to the jobs you've held, you can include your academic achievements, internships, volunteering, college projects you've worked on, extracurricular activities, and the skills that help qualify you for the job for which you're applying.
Your relevant and related experiences and accomplishments will help you show the employer that you've got the skills they are looking for in qualified candidates.
Here are tips for what to include in an early-career finance resume, with examples, and a template to download to use as a starting point for your own resume.
In addition to work experience, here's what you can highlight in your resume to show your qualifications to prospective employers.
- Highlight Academic Achievements: As a college student or graduate, your academic achievements are among your greatest assets. Highlight them by placing the “Education” section at the top of your resume. Include your GPA if it is strong, and list any achievements (such as academic awards). You might also include any finance-related coursework or projects you have completed.
Some employers may require you to include your GPA on your resume. Check the job posting to be sure you include all the information you need to get your application considered.
- Emphasize Internships: If you have limited work experience, highlight any work experience gained from relevant internships. Internships are a great way for college students and graduates to acquire work experience and skills in a particular field and should be included on a resume under "Work History" or a related resume section.
- Include Related Activities: You can, and should, include any extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, and other non-work experience related to the job. For a finance job, this might include serving as a treasurer for an organization or participating in a club related to your finance major. You can include these in either a “Related Experience” section or in a separate “Activities” section of your resume. In the resume example below, this section is called “Activities/Service.”
- Use Numbers When Possible: When explaining your responsibilities or achievements, use numbers when possible to demonstrate how you added value to a company or organization. It is particularly important for finance positions, in which you will be working with money on a regular basis. If you were treasurer of a club, you might mention the amount of money you managed. If you helped an organization save a percentage of money through some cost-cutting strategies, mention the percentage.
Not sure how to effectively include numbers on your resume? Here's advice on how to quantify your achievements to get your resume noticed.
- Add a Skills List: Consider adding a “Skills” section to your resume, especially if the job requires a particular skill set. You can divide the “Skills” section into subsections, such as “Computer Skills,” “Language Skills,” etc.
- Proofread and Edit: Even though a finance job requires technical skills, you also need to be a clear writer and communicator who pays attention to details. Therefore, you want to make sure your resume is free of errors. Proofread your resume thoroughly for spelling and grammar errors. Consider asking a college career counselor to look at your resume as well.
Check with your college career services office if you need resume and cover writing assistance. Many offices help graduates as well as students.

Finance graduate CV example
If you are a finance graduate, you can look forward to a career that is financially rewarding and full of exciting opportunities.
Roles are in high demand and it’s vital that you get your foot in the door with a finance graduate CV that puts you streets ahead of other candidates.
In our step-by-step guide and finance graduate CV example we’ll show you how to write an excellent CV that ensures you’re picked out for interview and employment.
Guide contents
- Structuring and formatting your CV
- Writing your CV profile
- Detailing work experience
- Your education
- Skills required for your Finance graduate CV
CV templates
This a good example of a Finance graduate CV which contains all of the information that an employer would need to know, and presents it in a well- structured, easy-to-read manner.
Take some time to look at this CV and refer to it throughout the writing of your own CV for best results.
Finance graduate CV structure & format
If you focus on the written content of your CV but ignore how it actually looks, your efforts could end up wasted.
No matter how suitable you are for the role, no recruiter wants to spend time squinting and trying to navigate a badly designed and disorganised CV.
Instead, make sure to organise your content into a simple structure and spend some time formatting it for ease of reading – it’ll get you in recruiter’s good books from the get-go!
Formatting Tips
- Length: While there’s no ‘official’ CV length rule, the majority of recruiters agree that less is more. Aim for two pages of A4 or less. This is just enough room to showcase your suitability to the role, without overwhelming recruiters with irrelevant or excessive content.
- Readability: Make sure your CV is easy to read and looks professional by applying some simple formatting tricks. Bullet points are great for making large paragraphs more digestible, while formatting your headings with bold or coloured text will help the reader to find the information they need, with speed.
- Design: When it comes to CV design, it’s best to keep things simple and sleek. While elaborate designs certainly command attention, it’s not always for the right reasons! Readability is key, so whatever you choose to do, make sure you prioritise readability above everything.
- Avoid photos: Recruiters can’t factor in appearance, gender or race into the recruitment process, so a profile photo is totally unnecessary. Additionally, company logos or images won’t add any value to your application, so you’re better off saving the space to showcase your experience instead.

Structuring your CV
When writing your own CV , break up your CV content into the following key sections:
- Name and contact details – Place them at the top of your CV, so that employers can easily get in touch.
- CV profile – A punchy sales pitch of your key experience, skills and achievements to reel readers in.
- Core skills section – A bullet-pointed snapshot of your abilities.
- Work experience – A well-structured list of your relevant work experience.
- Education – An overview of any relevant qualifications or professional training you have.
- Hobbies and interests – A short description of any relevant hobbies or interests (optional).
Now I’ll guide you through exactly what you should include in each CV section.
CV Contact Details
Start off your CV with a basic list of your contact details.
Here’s what you should include:
- Mobile number
- Email address – It’s often helpful to make a new email address, specifically for your job applications.
- Location – Share your town or city; there’s no need for a full address.
- LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL – Make sure the information on them is coherent with your CV, and that they’re up-to-date
Quick tip: Delete excessive details, such as your date of birth or marital status. Recruiters don’t need to know this much about you, so it’s best to save the space for your other CV sections.
Finance graduate CV Profile
Recruiters and hiring managers are busy, so it’s essential to catch their attention from the get-go.
A strong introductory profile (or personal statement , for junior candidates) at the top of the CV is the first thing they’ll read, so it’s a great chance to make an impression.
It should be a short but punchy summary of your key skills, relevant experience and accomplishments.
Ultimately, it should explain why you’re a great fit for the role you’re applying for and inspire recruiters to read the rest of your CV.
Tips for creating an impactful CV profile:
- Keep it brief: Recruiters have piles of CVs to read through and limited time to dedicate to each, so it pays to showcase your abilities in as few words as possible. 3-4 lines is ideal.
- Tailor it: Before writing your CV, make sure to do some research. Figure out exactly what your desired employers are looking for and make sure that you are making those requirements prominent in your CV profile, and throughout.
- Don’t add an objective: Leave your career objectives or goals out of your profile. You only have limited space to work with, so they’re best suited to your cover letter .
- Avoid cliches: “Determined team player who always gives 110%” might seem like a good way to fill up your CV profile, but generic phrases like this won’t land you an interview. Recruiters hear them time and time again and have no real reason to believe them. Instead, pack your profile with your hard skills and tangible achievements instead.
What to include in your Finance graduate CV profile?
- Summary of experience: Recruiters will want to know what type of companies you’ve worked for, industries you have knowledge of, and the type of work you’ve carried out in the past, so give them a summary of this in your profile.
- Relevant skills: Highlight your skills which are most relevant to Finance graduate jobs , to ensure that recruiters see your most in-demand skills as soon as they open your CV.
- Essential qualifications: If you have any qualifications which are highly relevant to Finance graduate jobs, then highlight them in your profile so that employers do not miss them.
Quick tip: Remember to triple-check for spelling and grammar errors before hitting send. If you’re unsure, try using our quick-and-easy CV Builder for a quick and easy approach.
Core skills section
Underneath your profile, create a core skills section to make your most relevant skills jump off the page at readers.
It should be made up of 2-3 columns of bullet points of your relevant skills.
Before you do this, look over the job description and make a list of any specific skills, specialisms or knowledge required.
Then, make sure to use your findings in your list. This will paint you as the perfect match for the role.
Work experience/Career history
Recruiters will be itching to know more about your relevant experience by now.
Kick-start this section with your most recent (or current) position, and work your way backwards through your history.
You can include voluntary and freelance work, too – as long as you’re honest about the nature of the work.
Structuring your roles
Lengthy, unbroken chunks of text is a recruiters worst nightmare, but your work experience section can easily end up looking like that if you are not careful.
To avoid this, use my tried-and-tested 3-step structure, as illustrated below:
Provide a brief overview of the job as a whole, such as what the overriding purpose of your job was and what type of company you worked for.
“Reporting to the Finance Manager. I am responsible for supporting with financial duties for the day to day operations of the firm. ”
Key responsibilities
Next up, you should write a short list of your day-to-day duties within the job.
Recruiters are most interested in your sector-specific skills and knowledge, so highlight these wherever possible.
- Processing purchase ledger and keeping it up to date.
- Supporting with bank reconciliations accurately
- Processing manual and electronic purchase order numbers
Key achievements
Round up each role by listing 1-3 key achievements , accomplishments or results.
Wherever possible, quantify them using hard facts and figures, as this really helps to prove your value.
- Won “Intern of the year 2020” from my university from the feedback that my manager has given.
- Received great feedback from my manager for my attention to detail as I have 100% accuracy level.
Next up, you should list your education and qualifications.
This can include your formal qualifications (a degree, A-Levels and GCSEs), as well as sector-specific Finance graduate qualifications and/or training.
While school leavers and recent grads should include a lot of detail here to make up for the lack of work experience, experienced candidates may benefit from a shorter education section, as your work experience section will be more important to recruiters.
Interests and hobbies
This section is entirely optional, so you’ll have to use your own judgement to figure out if it’s worth including.
If your hobbies and interests could make you appear more suitable for your dream job, then they are definitely worth adding.
Interests which are related to the industry, or hobbies like sports teams or volunteering, which display valuable transferable skills might be worth including.
Essential skills for your finance graduate CV
- Financial acumen – Numerical, financial and business skills should take pride of place on your CV.
- Organisational skills – Those looking for a career in finance need to show how they can apply organisational skills in practice.
- Customer service – Whether helping internal clients or external customers, you need to demonstrate your skills in customer service.
- Time management – Multiple aspects of finance sector work is time sensitive.
- Analytical skills – On your finance graduate CV, you should display how your skills in analysis can be applied to the benefit of the organisation.
Writing your Finance graduate CV
Once you’ve written your Finance graduate CV, you should proofread it several times to ensure that there are no typos or grammatical errors.
With a tailored punchy profile that showcases your relevant experience and skills, paired with well-structured role descriptions, you’ll be able to impress employers and land interviews.
Good luck with your next job application!

How to Write an Accounting Resume
An effective accounting resume should follow a clear structure that highlights your qualifications and experience. Here's a recommended outline:
- Contact Information
- Resume Summary or Resume Objective
- Work Experience
- Professional Affiliations
- Achievements (optional)
This structure allows you to present your most relevant information prominently while providing a comprehensive overview of your qualifications.
For most accounting positions, a reverse-chronological layout is recommended. This resume format highlights your most recent and relevant experience first, which is typically what employers are most interested in. However, in some cases, a combination (hybrid) format might be appropriate, especially if you're changing careers or have a diverse skill set you want to emphasize.
Your accounting resume header should include the following information:
- Professional Title (e.g., CPA, Senior Accountant)
- Phone Number
- Email Address
- Location (City, State)
- LinkedIn Profile (optional)
Ensure that your contact information is current and professional. Use a simple, clean font that's easy to read.
Your accounting resume summary should be a concise overview of your professional experience, skills, and key achievements. It should be tailored to the specific job you're applying for and highlight what makes you an ideal candidate. Include the following elements:
- Years of experience in accounting or related fields
- Specific areas of expertise (e.g., financial reporting, auditing, tax planning)
- Key skills relevant to the position
- Notable achievements or contributions
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA)
Keep your summary to 3-4 sentences maximum to ensure it's impactful and easy to read.
Accounting responsibilities can vary depending on the specific role and industry, but some common tasks include:
- Preparing and analyzing financial statements
- Managing accounts payable and receivable
- Conducting month-end and year-end close processes
- Ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations
- Performing financial forecasting and budgeting
- Reconciling accounts and investigating discrepancies
- Assisting with audits (internal and external)
- Implementing and maintaining internal controls
- Preparing tax returns and ensuring tax compliance
- Providing financial analysis and insights to support decision-making
When describing your responsibilities on your resume, focus on those most relevant to the job you're applying for and quantify your achievements whenever possible.
Your accounting resume experience section should highlight your relevant work history, showcasing your skills and accomplishments. For each position, include:
- Company name
- Employment dates
- 3-5 bullet points describing your key responsibilities and achievements
When writing your bullet points, use action verbs and focus on quantifiable results. Tailor your experience to the job description, emphasizing skills and accomplishments that align with the position you're seeking.

To improve this entry, the candidate should add more detail, quantify results where possible, and highlight any specific projects or improvements they contributed to.

Why it works

- Teamwork and collaboration

- Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP)
When listing certifications on your resume, include the full name of the certification, the issuing organization, and the date of certification (or expected date if you're in the process of obtaining it).

How to Write a Resume Summary for a Student or Graduate Resume
Let’s get moving on the content of your resume, starting with your resume summary .
Hold up! Wondering what a resume summary is?
It’s quite straightforward.
Basically, a resume summary it’s a short paragraph at the start of your resume which sums up your experience and suitability for the role.
It’s a bit like that elevator pitch you might hear people talk about in movies, start-ups or sales-driven business areas.
Instead of pitching a company or idea, you pitch you – and the benefits and value you bring, but there is no need to mention everything - for example, your work for an essay service may raise some eyebrows.
Time for us to look at Jane’s resume to see this in action.
Her summary is clear and direct.
Being in business means knowing about a lot of interconnected areas and Jane shows that she is versatile by highlighting her ‘proven and tested’ skills in procurement, marketing and sales – just some of the key areas that every solid business professional needs.
- “An independent and self-motivated business student with proven and tested business, procurement, sales, and marketing skills.”
- “An award-winning and confident communication graduate, able to establish rapport quickly and conduct training sessions with clarity and enthusiasm.”
Top Skills to Include in a Student or Graduate Resume
Let’s take a look at some of Jane’s skills now.
She includes a nice mix of technical (hard) and soft skills on her resume.
She talks about her proficiency with Google advertising technology, Typeform, and SendGrid, while highlighting four in-demand soft skills.
Now you might be worried that you don’t have any of the skills Jane lists in her resume.
Don’t worry, we bet you have plenty that you can include once you give it some thought.
Your hard skills will differ drastically based on what you’ve studied too.
And here’s a little secret that will lift your confidence and readiness to complete your resume.
There are some Soft Skills that almost every single employer will need.
Here they are:
- Communication
- Adaptability
- Punctuality
- Organization
- Flexibility
- Problem Solving Abilities
How many of them would you add to your college resume template ?
How to Stand Out From the Crowd as a Student or Fresh Graduate
You clever clogs out there are probably asking: “What if you share these skills with many other applicants?”
How on earth do you stand out?
Simple: you highlight your individual achievements and how they relate to the job.
Jane does this by linking her past work and volunteer experience to results. She successfully overcame personal targets – suggesting she’s driven – for three months in a row.
This kind of example is a really strong way to show a high-performance attitude, without bragging or claiming ‘I’m a high performer’. It’s showing, not telling.
A lack of experience is one of the big worries that students and graduates have when first applying for jobs and working on new resumes.
Look how Jane solves this problem by highlighting her leadership in event planning and social media while at University.
