IELTS Essay: University Sports Courts

The maps below shows university sports courts in 1990 and now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

IELTS Essay: Map Sports Centre

The map describes how a university sports courts area has changed from 1990 to the present day. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the number of total courts for tennis and basketball has increased at the expense of parking and a park, while a formal building with a gym now houses various exercise facilities. These changes allow for more varied activity.

In 1990, on the left side of the map was a park with trees and grass as well as a car park. Today, the park has been replaced by a large basketball court and the car park by 4 tennis courts.

On the right side of the map, a structure to contain the various athletic facilities has been erected with only the indoor pool and reception area in the same position in the new building. The changing room beneath the reception area and pool has been lengthened and moved slightly to the right so as to line up directly above a new, large fitness centre. The fitness centre has replaced two tennis courts, now outside the main building.

The picture compares the distribution of university sports courts between 1990 and today.

There are more sports courts showing up, such as basketball court and fitness centre, while a park and a car park are removed. Some courts, like cafe, reception, swimming pool and changing room are built indoors now.

On the left part of the sport area, a park is replaced by a basketball court. A tennis court is moved from the right bottom area to the location where there was a car park in 1990. Moreover, the number of tennis courts is raised from two to four.

On the right part of the sport area, all courts and buildings are enclosed in a huge building. The cafe, reception and swimming pool stay in the same position, but the swimming pool is changed into an indoor pool now. The changing room is enlarged and moved to the bottom of the swimming pool. A new fitness centre is built in the bottom of changing room which was the position of tennis court.

The maps derail the changes to a university sports courts in the year 1999 and at present. Overall, the court was on a rectangular area with all the facilities within in and the major changes that happened was the total removal of the car park and park which were replaced with basket and tennis courts and in all, the court became a complete sporting facility.

In 1990, two large parks occupied the western side of the court and the sports centre was in the Eastern angle. A cafe was situated at the northern tip with the reception next to it, and the changing room beside the reception. An outdoor pool stood on the northeastern side while the tennis court was placed at the southeast end.

As of now, the southwest top of the court has the basketball court, a replacement with the parks that once was there, and the tennis court sits just at the southwestern bottom ( it was relocated from its original position at the southeast). The changing room was shifted to now stand next to the fitness centre, a new addition to the sports complex. Only the outdoor maintained its original position over the years.

Table of Contents

Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports center now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

IELTS Task 1 Writing Cambridge 14 Test 4

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 Words

Sports Center: Version 1

The plans compare the current blueprint of a university sports center with its development in the future. Overall, the sports center will double its size, and additional amenities will be built.

The size of the reception area, which includes the pathway for the current changing room and seating, will be extended, having a sports shop on the west and a cafe on the east. The changing room, and seating in the middle of the center, including the 25-meter pool, will remain untouched.

The two outdoor courts will be converted into a leisure pool on the west, and a sports hall on the east. The size of the gym in the center’s north will be doubled, reaching to the east, next to the new two dance studios and adjacent to the converted sports hall. Two changing rooms will be made, one for each side: one near the pool and sports shop, and the other near the café and sports hall.

Sports Center: Version 2

The floor plan shows the current layout of the sports center at a university and its development in the future. Overall, the outdoor courts will be converted into different sporting facilities, and additional amenities will be added.

Currently, there are two outdoor courts; one on the west will be replaced by a leisure pool, while the other court on the east will be a sports hall. The gym, which is located in the center’s northern section, will be extended up to the sports hall, doubling its size. Two dance studios will be erected on the eastern side next to the sports hall.

In between the changing room and seating, there is a 25-meter pool, and no modifications will be made to these facilities. The reception will also be in the same location, but a sports shop on the west and a cafe on the east will be added next to the additional changing rooms on both ends.

Sports Facilities: Discuss Both Views [Sample Answer]

Posted by David S. Wills | Jun 27, 2020 | Model Essays | 0

Sports Facilities: Discuss Both Views [Sample Answer]

It’s time for another sample band 9 answer and this week we are going to look at a “ discuss both views ” question from task 2 of the IELTS writing exam. The question that we will examine today is about sports facilities, but the ideas here can be applied to anything. Remember, there are many topics in the IELTS writing test and you should be prepared for the most common ones.

Understanding the Question

Before you begin writing an IELTS essay, you need to understand the question fully. That process has several parts. Let’s look at our question for today in order to understand it.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

What is the topic here?

  • Government policy?

I would say that the answer is #2 – health. However, you can clearly see that the other topics I have listed are part of the question as well. You could not answer this well without talking about sports or society.

A Secret for Understanding the Question

If you want to understand a question better, the smart thing to do is paraphrase it. This is because you have to try harder to understand it and it can break the idea down better in your mind.

There are two parts to IELTS questions: the statement and the task :

ielts writing question structure

You need to “discuss both views” and also give an opinion, but about what?

About those two statements:, which I shall paraphrase:

  • More sports centres will improve public health.
  • Sports centres would not help, but something else might.

Once you understand the question fully, you can begin to plan your answer. For this sort of question, it is possible to use 4 or 5 paragraphs , but I generally recommend 4 because it is easier and usually more effective.

Structure your IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay

I have lots of material on this website about structuring your IELTS writing task 2 essay, but today I will show you my outline for this model essay.

First, you should brainstorm some ideas about the topic. Don’t spend too much time doing this because it is better to spend that time on actually writing the essay. But you could make some notes like this:

More sports centres will improve public health.Sports centres would not help, but something else might.
easier to access
can be helpful for children
group activities
they already exist
no evidence to suggest it would work
education is likely more effective

Those are just a few ideas. You should brainstorm your own ones. You should also present your opinion . It is really important that you do not forget this part or else you will not have adequately answered the question.

Next, you have to wonder how to use your paragraphs to present these ideas effectively. Here is my sample answer:

ielts writing task 2 essay template

This might not make much sense to you… but don’t worry! Notes are a personal thing and it is only really important that they make sense to the person writing them.

internal paragraph structure for ielts writing task 2

Sample Band 9 Answer

Ok, now that you have seen my structure plans, here is my essay:

There is much debate over the issue of how to help improve public health, and some people have suggested that there should be more sports facilities available. Others, however, say that this would have a minimal impact on the situation. This essay will look at both views and argue that it would indeed only have a small positive impact. Those who support building more public sports facilities believe that they will encourage more people to participate in regular exercise. This is logical, but there are already many public sports facilities available and it has had little impact. The only people who would likely benefit are children, and while this is important, children already have plenty of places to get exercise. Whilst millions of pounds could be spent on building new facilities, it seems that there is little that would really be contributed to helping solve this crisis. Even if there was an uptick in the number of people doing exercise, it would not eliminate the public health crisis as exercise is only one small part of it. While it is true that exercise is good for the human body, it is nearly impossible to burn off the number of calories that the average person is now consuming. Even if a person were to run a marathon, it would not negate the damaging effects of going to McDonald’s for lunch. That person would still end the day in a calorie surplus and therefore continue to gain weight. When you consider that few people can run marathons, it becomes obvious that the culprit for poor public health is not exercise but rather diet. In conclusion, it would be good to have more public sports facilities and there may be some small benefit to this, but unfortunately it would not be a significant benefit and other measures would need to be taken too.

Sample Report 1

The diagrams delineate the current configuration of a university sports center alongside its envisioned redevelopment plans.

The overarching theme of the redevelopment is expansion and enhancement. The proposal introduces additional facilities while maintaining the core structure of the existing center. Notably, the future design includes a leisure pool, a café, a sports shop, and dance studios, which signal a significant broadening of the center's offerings.

In detail, the western section of the center will undergo a substantial transformation. The present outdoor courts are set to be replaced by a leisure pool, accompanied by a new changing room situated in the southwest. This area is designed to provide a recreational space that contrasts with the existing lap pool. The reception area will be expanded to accommodate increased foot traffic and to house a new sports shop, enhancing the functional and commercial aspects of the center.

On the eastern side, where outdoor courts currently reside, the plans indicate a more comprehensive development. The existing space will be repurposed to include a second changing room linked directly to a new café, creating a social hub within the sports center. Adjacent to this, a new sports hall will be constructed, flanked by two dance studios, thereby diversifying the activities available to users. This side of the center thus evolves into a zone not only for sports but also for social and cultural gatherings, reflecting a holistic approach to student life and wellness.

Sample Report 2

The maps show the existing state of a university sports facility and some of the adjustments that have been suggested.

In general, the proposal calls for building out both sides of the complex and adding a few amenities, including a leisure pool, a café, a sports store, and dancing studios.

The outdoor court on the west side of the sports facility will be replaced with a leisure swimming pool, which will have direct access to a brand-new dressing room on the extreme south-west corner of the structure. In addition, the lobby will be enlarged, and a sports store will be established close to the changing area. The complex's central 25-meter pool will stay just as it is. The reception, changing area, and sitting layout surrounding the pool will also not alter.

The outdoor courts to the east of the centre will be eliminated to create room for new facilities, as seen on the east side of the map. In the extreme south-east, the concept calls for building a second changing room connected to a brand-new café that will debut beside the new sports hall. Additionally, two dance studios will be constructed side by side close to the sports hall, one of which will be next to the recently expanded gym.

Sample Report 3

The maps show the proposed changes to a university sports facility. The recommended changes are intended to improve the facility's services and users' overall experience.

The plan is for enlarging the sports complex's two sides and adding a number of fresh amenities, including a leisure pool, a café, a sports shop, and dance studios.

The present outdoor court on the west side will be replaced with a leisure pool that will be easily connected to a cutting-edge changing area on the southwest corner. The neighbouring reception, changing area, and seating layout will be expanded while the centre 25-meter pool will stay unaltered. Additionally, a sports store will be built close to the new changing area.

The east side of the facility will also undergo significant changes, with the elimination of the outdoor courts to make space for the new amenities. A second changing room, connected to a brand-new café, will be established on the south-east corner. Additionally, two dance studios will be constructed close to the sports hall, one of them next to the freshly renovated gym.

Sample Report 4

The maps illustrate the current scenario of a university sports complex and some of its proposed changes.

Overall, the plan proposes expansion for both sides of the complex and the addition of some facilities - specifically leisure pool, café, sports shop, and dance studios.

Looking first to the west side of the sports centre, the outdoor court will be replaced by a recreational swimming pool with direct access to a new dressing room located on the far south-west corner of the building. Additionally, the reception area will be extended, and a sports shop will be opened next to the changing room. The 25m pool situated in the middle of the complex will remain as it is. Similarly, there will be no changes in the reception, changing room, and the seating arrangement around the pool.

Turning to the east side of the map, the outdoor courts located on the east of the centre are going to be removed to make way for new facilities. Looking to the far south-east, the plan proposes the construction of another changing room attached to a brand-new café that will be opened just opposite to the new sports hall. Furthermore, next to the sport’s hall, two dance studios will be built side by side, one of them will be adjacent to the newly expanded gym.

Sample Report 5

The illustrations give a thorough overview of both the construction of the present sports complex and the anticipated refurbishment plans.

Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the restoration plan calls for the removal of the outside courts and the enlargement of the gym to accommodate a variety of facilities including swimming, dance, and non-exercise-related activities like coffee drinking and dancing.

Currently, there are large outdoor courts around the university's main building. The design calls for demolishing the western courts and building a leisure pool that is larger and surpasses the present pool's dimensions, which won't change during the restoration process. With the exception of the gym, which will be extended eastward to make place for two extra dance studios, the main structure, including its reception, seating area, and changing rooms, won't be changed.

In addition, a sports hall will take the place of the eastern outdoor court, and a new changing area, like the one in the southwest corner, will be erected to the southeast of the sports hall, along with a nearby café to the west. The main entrance won't be compromised, but a new sports store will be added adjacent to the dressing room on the western side.

Sample Report 6

Two maps given here illustrate the present layout of the university sports centre and how it will look like after redevelopment in the future. According to the future plan, there will be several additions while improving the remaining facilities further.

The entrance, reception area, 25m pool with its neighbouring changing room and seating areas will be kept as they are even after the renewal of the centre. Two outdoor courts will be replaced with new developments and the gym will be expanded almost to be twice as its present space.

There will be new leisure pool built towards the north-western corner of the centre along with a new changing room towards the south-western corner. Also, a café and a sports shop will be built on the east and west sides, respectively, of the southern entrance of the sports centre. In addition, a new sports hall will be built at the east side of the centre, along with two dance studios and a new changing room at the east border.

✍️ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

Aquatics Centre

AQC_1_Centre Aquatique_Paris2024

The Aquatics Centre, along with Le Bourget Climbing Wall, is the only permanent sports facility to be built for the Paris 2024 Games. In 2024, it will welcome the world’s greatest athletes for the artistic swimming, water polo and diving events. Looking beyond the Games, the Aquatics Centre has been designed to address the needs of Seine-Saint-Denis (its host region, and the French swimming community, which will now have a facility that can host the biggest national and international competitions.

The Aquatics Centre will connect to the neighbouring Stade de France over a footbridge spanning the A1 motorway, and is a meaningful public investment for Seine Saint Denis, which is seriously lacking in sports facilities. The Aquatics Centre’s novel configuration will be modular: it will be able to switch from a 5,000-seat venue during the Games to a 2,500-seat facility to host neighbourhood events afterwards.

The Aquatics Centre will be low-carbon and all the building materials will be bio-based. Its timber structure and roof frame are designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding greenery. With a 5,000 sqm roof covered with photovoltaic panels, it will be one of France’s largest urban solar farms and supply all the energy that the centre needs.

The interior fittings will be made of recycled materials and made in France to showcase the country’s expertise in environmental performance.

From swimming lessons to recreational use and high-level competitions, the Aquatics Centre will be multifunctional. From July 2025, the Aquatics Centre will become a vast multi-sports facility open to all, including two pools (50m and 25m), a fitness area, bouldering area, paddle tennis section and pitches for team sports. It will also have an adjustable floor to serve a variety of purposes (swimming lessons for babies and children, etc.). The Aquatics Centre will also be the state-of-the-art facility that the French swimming community has been looking forward to for decades. The French Swimming Federation will be able to host national and international competitions in its four indoor disciplines. The Centre will also provide a best-in-class federal training facility for leading French athletes and will notably be home to the country’s diving centre.
