In my article best Chinese movies of 2018 , I said that Chinese movies are catching up with Hollywood pretty fast. Same can be said about Tamil films that are getting closer and closer to Bollywood in terms of sheer size and scale. Tamil is the widest spoken South Indian language, and naturally, Tamil movies have a wider audience when compared to other South Indian movies. Despite facing stern competition from Telugu movies in terms of box office and the quality, Tamil movies have always been great contributors to Indian cinema on a whole. This year is no different, with a wide range of movies coming from Tamil industry, and grabbing eyeballs nation-wide. Two Tamil movies made into the top  IMDb rated Indian movies.  If you’re wondering what good Tamil movies did you miss this year, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here is the list of top Tamil movies of 2018. The list includes Tamil horror movies, Tamil romantic movies, Tamil action movies and Tamil thriller movies.

20. 2.0 (2018)

‘2.0’ might not be a great movie, but it earns a place in the list because of the efforts that were put into it. It might be Shankar’s weakest work as a writer after ‘Nanban’, but he excels as a director. The scale, the grandeur and the performances from Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar make the film a must watch. Rajnikanth has four different shades to play, and he absolutely owns each one of them. Akshay Kumar is brilliant in his role as a professor and he gives a convincing performance as the evil super-villain. The CGI and 3D effects are one of the best graphics India has ever produced. Sound design is world class, and the background score is very engaging. Despite being poorly written, the film gives the right amount of thrills and will entertain you if you can ignore the plot holes.

19. Savarkathi (2018)

If the purpose of a movie is to just entertain its audience, this movie does that job perfectly fine. A couple of songs that play at the end are good. Ram and Poorna play their respective parts well. Unpredictable characterization of Manga drives the story very well and he steers the whole film. For a debut director, Adhitya shows promise although there is obvious involvement of his brother and director Myshkin in the film. The climax is heart-touching and brings the right amount of impact. Despite the plot being shaky, the performances and the character developments help ignore the negatives.

18. Annanakku Jey (2018)

For a political film, ‘Annanukku Jey’ is refreshingly low-key. That seems just perfect because the film deals with the conflicts between people in the lower rungs of politics. The film has enough scope to put in serious drama and many action elements, but the writers provide a more sarcastic and humorous approach, which makes it different from other movies that have a similar setup. Lead actor Dinesh does a good job with his role. Despite having a political backdrop, the film has large portions of romance and comedy. The soundtrack is decent, especially the only romantic song in the film is soothing.

17. Junga (2018)

Once again, the plot of the film has nothing pathbreaking to offer, but the approach makes it an interesting watch. That being said, the makers could’ve done a lot more. The comedy works but it’s not memorable or different. Vijay Sethupati is good, but he to could’ve done more. The film is essentially a gangster comedy, which is not something new. To enjoy this film, it’s important to understand what it wants to do. It wants to entertain you and make fun of the gangsters. It wants to bank on the comic timing of talented actors like Yogi Babu and Vijay Sethupathi. So, if you appreciate regular entertainment, give it a shot.

16. Nota (2018)

I’ve noticed a lot of political flavor in Tamil movies in recent years. What got on my nerve a little bit is an unnecessary usage of political contextual dialogues which are out of the place. But since ‘Nota’ is a political drama, it needs these political references. Importantly, the film gets it right in terms of balancing the plot and real-life parallels. The film dwells deeply into political warfare, conspiracies and has enough amount of family drama. Vijay Devarakonda nails his part as an accidental Chief Minister of sorts. The writing is well balanced and provides enough interesting moments to keep you engaged till the end of its runtime. The twists and turns work well too.

15. U-Turn (2018)

‘U-Turn’ is the remake of a Kannada thriller with the same name. It was shot in both Telugu and Tamil simultaneously. It all begins after Rachana, an ambitious and practical girl, who shies away from getting married despite pressure from her mother, starts working on the story of people who take illegal U-turns. I’ll not reveal any further and let you experience it yourself.  This is Samantha’s second best performance, after ‘Rangasthalam’, which we’ll talk about in a while. Aadi and Rahul fit into their characters perfectly. Bhoomika plays a good role and gives the emotional quotient to the film. Though the climax is not for everyone, you’ll enjoy the movie even if you don’t buy the ending.

14. Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018)

I’ve been among the loyal Mani Ratnam followers who have been waiting for many years now for a film worthy of his name. After exploring several themes, Mani returned to his home turf with the gangster drama ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’. The maestro delivers what he is expected to. He subtly uses gray characters to draw you into rooting for one of the three brothers to triumph others. He then delivers a shocking knockout punch with a brilliant climax. The actors Aravind Swamy, Arun Vijay and Simbu play the brothers perfectly. The upcoming superstar Vijay Sethupathi is easily the highlight among the stellar star cast. Don’t miss this one.

13. Kolamavu Kokila (2018)

‘Kolamavu Kokila’ tells the story of a lower middle-class family that struggles to make ends meet when faced with a sudden need for money. The elder daughter, our protagonist, has to take a very unusual and dangerous path to earn money which puts both herself and her family at risk. How will her family survive? This forms the rest of the plot. The serious story is presented in a very whacky way with dark comedy. The unusual support cast will make you laugh whenever you see them on screen. The movie has many flaws and loopholes but the cast and music make the movie worth your time.

12. Kaala (2018)

PA Ranjith struggled to strike the right balance between Rajnikanth’s star value and good storytelling in ‘Kabali’. However, he makes sure with ‘Kaala’ to tell a good story and cater to the masses. The film is a classic tale of fight between good and evil. However, Ranjith twists the narration and uses clever euphemisms from Indian mythology to symbolize Rajinikanth as “Raavan”. This adds a new dimension to the climax and gives a good refreshing experience, even though its essentially only hero versus villain. Nana Patekar gives a settled performance as the antagonist. The film has an over-usage of political double entendres, and gives off a vibe of propaganda. Then again, this has been the case with several Tamil movies lately. Barring this one drawback, the film is a thorough entertainer.

11. Sila Samayangali (2018)

‘Sila Samayangali’ strikes the right cord. Every actor plays their part with subtlety. Each character in the film will leave you  thinking. Although you may constantly try to judge why they behave the way they do, however, you will ultimately know the cause behind their actions. Everyone has their own reasons, simple and realistic. Towards the end, you are left with a minor discomfort, which makes you think about everything all over again. Priyadarshan succeeds in setting the mode, tone and character nuances about the idea that was intended to be conveyed.

10. Tik Tik Tik (2018)

India’s first space film had to make into the list. This first attempt at a space-themed movie has been well executed in the technical areas. With the budget and time frame, the team has done an amazing job with the CG and artwork. This genre is attempted for the first time in Tamil cinema and is yet to be exploited — like in Hollywood. But it seems like the makers of the film put all their efforts into the technical side of things and didn’t really work hard on the script. There are loopholes and timeline issues that are glaringly obvious. All that being said, and keeping all the limitations in mind, the team does a good job. Restrain yourself into drawing comparisons to Hollywood space movies and you’ll enjoy it.

9. Iravukku Aayiram Kangal (2018)

‘Iravukku Aayiram Kangal’ is a crime thriller action movie directed by Maran. It takes loads of courage to come up with such a great crime action script which needs to connect all the loose loopholes in the climax. The murder mystery is engaging for the most part but some of the antics by the actors turns the plot convoluted for the sake of being complex. There are some smart moves of connecting the plot with clear inspirations from several prominent murder mystery novels. In any case, in the end,  ‘Iravukku Aayiram Kangal’ manages to provide the right amount of thrills.

8. Irumbu Thirai (2018)

‘Irumbu Thirai’ is an action movie that is not to be missed. It’s not simply because of the cast, their natural talent or their performance but due to various messages that one single movie can provide to the audience in this digital era. Simply put, the main synopsis is all about how vulnerable people can easily be manipulated with their own personal data with sophisticated digital technology. Yes, there are times where logic is tested. But that is a given for Indian movies, and I’ve evolved into ignoring these smaller things. So I suggest you start doing that too. All the performances and technical departments work well and provide a good cinematic experience.

7. Kaatrin Mozhi (2018)

‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ is the remake of ‘Tumhari Sulu’. The film mostly adapts the story and the screenplay from the original and stays loyal to its source material. It’s really hard to deal with the subject of feminism. This movie seems to get that right. It perfectly portrayed the cliched things which are still present in our society. The film doesn’t seem stretched, though could’ve been. It’s really hard to make these type of films. On the whole, you never feel that the movie is two and a half hours. But there are some unnecessary cameos and songs that should have been left out on the editing table. But like I said, it’s okay to ignore the little things to get a complete experience.

6. Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018)

‘Imaikkaa Nodigal’ is an adroit and brilliant crime thriller with good ideas. A neat execution, sharp visuals by RD Rajasekhar and enthralling background score by Hip Hop Tamizha give the film a lift. However, due to some pacing issues, the film slacks in the middle. Nayanthara shines. Atharvaa scores in his scenes. The one who deserves a special mention here is the gory and menacing antagonist, Anurag Kashyap, whose screen presence and villainous act haunts the audience. Overall, ‘Imaikkaa Nodigal’ entertains, despite the drag here and there.

5. 96 (2018)

’96’ is basically centered on two people for most part and how they reminisce about their past. To be honest, romance is my least favorite genre and yet I’ve to acknowledge the fact that this film is engaging — many thanks to the actors. Even though film’s story had the potential to become a tragic cliche with over the top emotional roller coaster rider, it cleverly evades that. It’s sad, it’s melancholic, and it’s one of those rare films which makes you go back to watch it all over again.

4. Ratsasan (2018)

To begin with, the plot of ‘Ratsasan’ is the typical cliched cat and mouse chase. But when it comes to the screen it just explodes and leaves thriller buffs awestruck. The plot points are the ones to watch out for. It’s a thriller movie with some horror elements. It’s not the suspense but the background score and killer’s modus operandi that creeps you out. The actors have done their jobs perfectly. Especially the protagonist’s brother in law and killer himself.  Catering well to human emotions, the movie even manages to discuss efficiently few strong social issues. Though the romance seems to be done just for the sake of doing it, the movie as a whole is very well constructed. Kudos the cinematographer and special effects team for their contributions as well.

3. Pariyerum Perumal (2018)

On paper, this is a simple love story that shows the side of honor killings happening in India, but the way it is presented is just brilliant. The acting is perfect and the artwork is very good. The film always looks grounded in reality despite presence of stylised songs. The way the issue of caste is shown is in a much fluid manner that defies any preachiness. Above all, despite the violence and hopelessness shown in the film, it still tries to end with a ray of hope about defining relationships. The last shot of the tea glass is such a perfect ending that shows what is still left in the society.

2. Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018)

The simplicity and poetic beauty of this film is what Indian audiences are used to. Everything falls exactly into the right places and shows the life of indigenous people of the Tamil Nadu-Kerala state border of Western Ghats of India. Their simple life becomes more and more complicated over the years. When they lose all the land, their livelihood becomes something closer to slavery but they still go on without losing the will to live. Those who should stand up for them sell them out and the few who would stand up are thrown under the system. The decision to use mostly debutant actors helps in furthering the authenticity of the film. ‘Merku Thodarchi Malai’ is a must watch.

1. Vada Chennai (2018)

I’m finding it hard to find a starting point to talk about ‘Vada Chennai’. I don’t know if I should start by saying how the film is a winner right from its stunningly well-written screenplay. Whether I should mention how the filmmaker uses the rustic and raw backdrop that completely sucks you into the thick of things. I feel that I’ll wrong the actors if I don’t begin by saying how each one of them, foreground and background, gets into the skin of their character. And I’m worried that it won’t be fair to not talk about the excellent technical virtues of the film. So I’ll just leave you with this: like hundreds of gangster dramas fed off ‘The Godfather’ trilogy, don’t get shocked if ‘Vada Chennai’ ends up doing the same to Indian cinema.

இந்தியாவில் அப்படிப்பட்ட படங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை மிகக் குறைவு. அதையும் மீறி வெளியானவற்றில் கணிசமானவை மலையாளத் திரையுலகைச் சேர்ந்தவை என்று சொன்னால் மிகையாகாது. வைரஸ், உயரே என்று தொடரும் அப்பட வரிசையில் புதிதாகச் சேர்ந்திருக்கிறது 2018 .

கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் 16, 2018 அன்று கேரளாவின் இடுக்கி அணையில் இருந்து அதிகளவில் திறந்துவிடப்பட்ட நீரால் அம்மாவட்டம் முழுக்க வெள்ளப் பேரழிவுக்கு உள்ளானதை மீண்டும் உயிர்ப்பித்துக் காட்டியிருக்கிறது இத்திரைப்படம் .

வெள்ளத்திற்கு நடுவே..!

எந்தவொரு பேரழிவுக்கு முன்பும் மக்கள் இயல்பான ஒரு வாழ்வை மேற்கொண்டிருப்பார்கள். அந்த பேரழிவு அதனைத் தடம் புரட்டிப் போட்டிருக்கும். இப்படத்திலும் அப்படிப் பல மாந்தர்கள் உலா வருகின்றனர்.

இந்திய ராணுவத்தில் பணியாற்றப் பயந்து சொந்த ஊருக்கு ஓடி வந்தவர் அனூப் (டொவினோ தாமஸ்). அவருக்குள் இருக்கும் மரண பயத்தை ஊரார் கேலி செய்கின்றனர். அந்த பயத்தைக் கடந்து செல்லும் தருணத்திற்காக அவர் காத்திருக்கிறார். அதேநேரத்தில் ஒரு நல்ல வாழ்க்கைத் துணையையும் தேடுகிறார்.

அதற்கேற்ப, அருகிலுள்ள பள்ளியொன்றில் ஆசிரியையாக வந்து சேர்கிறார் மஞ்சு (தன்வி ராம்). தன்னைச் சுற்றியிருக்கும் மக்களுக்கு உதவுவதே மஞ்சுவுக்குப் பிடித்தமான விஷயம்; மற்றவர்களுக்கு தானே முன்வந்து உதவுவது அனூப்பின் இயல்பு என்பதால் இருவருக்குள்ளும் நல்ல புரிதல் ஏற்படுகிறது.

இவர்களைப் போன்று பல மனிதர்கள் தங்களுக்கான வாழ்க்கையை அம்மண்ணில் வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றனர்.

வானிலை மையத்தில் வேலை பார்க்கும் ஷாஜி (குஞ்சாக்கோ போபன்) புதிதாக வீடு கட்டியிருக்கிறார். அவரது மனைவி நிறைமாதக் கர்ப்பிணியாக இருக்கிறார்.

மாத்தச்சன் (லால்) எனும் மீனவரின் மகனான டிக்சனுக்கு (ஆசிஃப் அலி) ஒரு மாடல் ஆவதே லட்சியம். ஆனால், தான் ஒரு மீனவக் குடும்பத்தைச் சார்ந்தவன் என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்ள அவர் வெட்கப்படுகிறார். அதையே காரணம் காட்டி, அவரது காதலியின் வீட்டாரும் திருமணப் பேச்சுக்குத் தடை போடுகின்றனர்.

புதிதாகத் திருமணமான தன் மனைவியை விட்டுவிட்டு, துபாயில் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார் ரமேசன் (வினீத் சீனிவாசன்). விடுமுறை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு ஊருக்கு வரத் தயங்குகிறார்.

ஊரில் இருக்கும் அவரது தாய் திடீரென்று கீழே விழுந்து காயப்பட, அவசர அவசரமாக இந்தியாவுக்கு வருகிறார். ஆனால், கோயம்புத்தூருக்கே அவருக்கு விமான டிக்கெட் கிடைக்கிறது.

போலந்தில் இருந்து கேரளாவுக்கு ஒரு தம்பதி சுற்றுலா வருகின்றனர். அவர்களுக்குச் சுற்றுலாத் தலங்களைக் காட்டும் பணி கார் ஓட்டுநர் கோஷிக்கு (அஜு வர்கீஸ்) கிடைக்கிறது. அவர்கள் செல்லும் இடங்களெல்லாம் வெள்ளத்தின் காரணமாக மூடப்படுகின்றன.

மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்த சேதுபதி (கலையரசன்), ஒரு லாரி ஓட்டுநர். தனது மகள் மற்றும் தாயை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து, கேரளாவுக்கு சரக்கு எடுத்துச் செல்லும் பணியைச் செய்து வருகிறார்.

ஒருநாள் கேரளாவில் இருக்கும் ஒரு ஆலையைத் தகர்க்க வெடிமருந்தை எடுத்துச் செல்லுமாறு கூறுகிறார் முதலாளி. விருப்பமில்லாமல், அதனை ஏற்கும் சேதுபதி கேரளாவுக்குப் பயணம் மேற்கொள்கிறார். போலீசாரிடம் இருந்து தப்பிக்க, வெள்ள நிவாரணப் பொருட்களையும் லாரியில் ஏற்றிக் கொள்கிறார்.

இவ்வாறு வெவ்வேறு திசைகளில் செல்லும் பல மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கை, ஒருநாள் இரவில் தலைகீழாகிறது. தங்களது இயல்பான குணாதிசயங்களைத் துறந்து, ஒரு பேரழிவின்போது சக மனிதர்களோடு ஒன்றுபட வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்தை உண்டுபண்ணுகிறது.

அது, அவர்கள் அதுநாள் வரை எதிர்கொண்ட பிரச்சனைகளுக்கான தீர்வையும் காட்டுகிறது. எவ்வாறு அது நிகழ்கிறது என்பதைச் சொல்கிறது 2018.

இந்த படத்தின் டைட்டில் அருகே, ‘எல்லோரும் நாயகர் தான்’ என்ற வரி இணைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கதையின் மையக்கருவும் கூட அதுவே.

அபாரமான உழைப்பு!

இந்த படத்தில் குஞ்சாக்கோ போபன், ஆசிஃப் அலி, வினீத் சீனிவாசன், டொவினோ தாமஸ், கலையரசன், லால், நரேன், அஜு வர்கீஸ், ஜாபர் இடுக்கி, சுதீஷ், சித்திக், தன்வி ராம், ஷிவதா, அபர்ணா பாலமுரளி, உட்படப் பல நட்சத்திரக் கலைஞர்கள் நடித்துள்ளனர். முதல் அரை மணி நேரத்தில் பல பாத்திரங்களின் அறிமுகம் அடுத்தடுத்து நிகழ்கிறது.

அவர்களது வாழ்வு முழுமையாக ரசிகர்களுக்குப் புரியவரும்போது, இடைவேளை வருகிறது. அதனால், பின்பாதியிலேயே வெள்ளத்தின் கோரமுகம் நமக்குத் தெரிய வருகிறது.

அதேநேரத்தில், இத்தனை நடிகர் நடிகைகளையும் சரியான முறையில் திரையில் காட்ட முடியுமா என்ற சந்தேகத்தை மிகத்தெளிவாகத் தீர்த்து வைத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் ஜூடு ஆண்டனி ஜோசப். ரசிகர்கள் மனம் கோணாத வண்ணம், அவர்களது இருப்பை அமைத்திருக்கிறார்.

படத்தில் டொவினோ தாமஸுக்கு கொஞ்சம் அதிக இடம் உண்டு. மலையாளத்தில் அவர் முன்னணி நட்சத்திரம் என்பது அதற்குக் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அவர் ஏற்ற பாத்திரம் தமிழ், தெலுங்கு நட்சத்திரங்கள் உற்றுக் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய ஒன்று.

இதில் குஞ்சாக்கோ போபனுக்குப் பெரிய பாத்திரம் இல்லை என்றபோதும், தன் இமேஜ் துறந்து நடித்திருக்கிறார். அதேநேரத்தில், குணசித்திர பாத்திரங்களில் நடித்துவரும் லால், சுதீஷ் போன்றவர்களுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் தரப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இதெல்லாமே, கதைக்களத்திற்கேற்ப படைக்கப்பட்ட பாத்திரங்களையே நமக்குக் காட்டுகிறது.

அனைத்து கலைஞர்களும் ஒன்றிணைந்து தங்கள் உழைப்பையும் திறமையையும் திரையில் காட்டியிருப்பதே, இப்படத்தின் கமர்ஷியல் வெற்றியை உறுதிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது.

வெள்ளம் சூழ்ந்த நிலப்பகுதியைக் காட்டும்போது, ‘ஆஹா’ என்று சொல்ல வைக்கிறது மோகன்தாஸின் தயாரிப்பு வடிவமைப்பு. பல இடங்களில் விஎஃப்எக்ஸின் பங்கு கணிசமாக உள்ளது.

இடுக்கி மாவட்டத்தின் அழகைக் காட்டுவதிலும், வெள்ளத்தின் கோரத்தைக் காட்டுவதிலும் அகில் ஜார்ஜின் ஒளிப்பதிவு முக்கியப் பங்கு வகிக்கிறது.

சமான் சாக்கோவின் படத்தொகுப்பு முன்பாதியை மெதுவாக நகர்த்தவும், பின்பாதியை பரபரப்பாக மாற்றவும் உதவியிருக்கிறது. எந்த இடத்திலும் கதாபாத்திரங்களின், சம்பவங்களின் தொடர்ச்சியைக் கைவிடாமல் ஒரு முழுமையான காட்சியனுபவத்தைத் தந்திருக்கிறது.

நோபின் பால் பின்னணி இசை, ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக நமது திரை அனுபவத்தையே வேறுமாதிரியானதாக ஆக்குகிறது.

பெரும் நட்சத்திரப் பட்டாளம், வெள்ளப் பாதிப்பைச் சொல்லும் கதைக்களம், கிடைத்த பட்ஜெட்டில் ரசிகர்களைப் பிரமிக்க வைக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயம், இவையனைத்தையும் ‘ஜஸ்ட் லைக் தட்’ விதமாகக் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார் இப்படத்தை எழுதி இயக்கியிருக்கும் ஜூடு ஆண்டனி ஜோசப்.

ஆசீர்வதிக்கும் கைகள்!

திரைக்கதையின் தொடக்கத்தில், அந்த கிராமத்தில் இருக்கும் மேரி மாதா சிலை காட்டப்படுகிறது. அது எவ்வளவு உயரமானது என்பதை அந்த ஷாட்டில் கிரேன் உயர்வு சொல்லிவிடும்.  

இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு, வெள்ள மட்டம் எந்தளவுக்கு உள்ளது என்பதைச் சொல்ல அந்தச் சிலையே அளவுகோலாக உள்ளது. இறுதிக்காட்சியில் மின்சார வயரைப் பிடித்தவாறே டொவினோ தாமஸ் செல்லும் காட்சியில், அவருக்கு இணையாக அந்த சிலை காட்டப்படும்போது எவ்வளவு உயரம் வெள்ளம் சூழ்ந்திருக்கிறது எனும் சிந்தனை நம் மூளையைப் பிடித்தாட்டுகிறது.

2018 வெள்ளத்தின்போது இடுக்கி, கோட்டயம் மாவட்டங்களில் நிகழ்ந்த மீட்புப் பணிகளில் சாதாரண மக்களின் பங்களிப்பு மிகமிக முக்கியமானது என்பதைச் சொல்ல, அந்த ஒரு ஷாட் போதும். இந்தப் படம் முன்வைக்கும் கருத்தும் அதுவே.

மலையாளப் படங்களில் தமிழர்களை இழிவுபடுத்திக் காண்பிக்கும் வழக்கம் பத்தாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரை அதிகம். இப்போது அப்படியில்லை. அந்த வகையில், இந்த படத்திலும் தமிழ் பேசும் பாத்திரங்கள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.

திரைக்கதை நகர்வு சினிமாத்தனமாக இருந்தாலும், கிளைமேக்ஸ் காட்சி ‘க்ளிஷே’வாக இருந்தாலும், வாழ்க்கையின் நசிவுக்காலத்தில் நம்பிக்கை தரும் விதமாக ஏதேனும் ஒரு கைகள் நம்மை நோக்கி நீளாதா என்ற மனித மனங்களின் பிரார்த்தனையே இக்கதையில் நிரம்பியுள்ளது.

எந்தப் பேரழிவின்போதும் மனிதர்கள் தங்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் வேறுபாடுகளைக் கடந்து ஒன்றாகக் கைகோர்ப்பார்கள். அப்படி இணைந்த பல்லாயிரம் கைகளின் வழியே நம்பிக்கைக்கீற்றை காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது ‘2018’. நிச்சயம் இதுவொரு ‘பீல்குட்’ அனுபவத்தைத் தரும்!

Jude anthany joseph’s malayalam blockbuster has been dubbed in hindi..

Jude Anthany Joseph’s hugely profitable survival drama 2018 has been credited with saving the Malayalam film industry which, like its Hindi counterpart, has been struggling to win back audiences after the coronavirus pandemic. 2018 , released in Kerala on May 5 and now dubbed in Hindi, assembles a staggering cast of acting talent. It appears that nearly everybody of note is here, doing their bit to boost business just as their characters in the film join hands to save lives.

Indeed, Joseph’s account of the catastrophic 2018 floods in Kerala, written with Akhil P Dharmajan, is introducing actors even after the interval. Spread over 150 minutes, 2018 is a mosaic of the experiences of several characters with the impact of incessant rain, disastrous environmental policies, and nature’s fury. Like Aashiq Abu’s Virus (2018), about the Nipah outbreak in Kerala in 2018, Joseph’s film celebrates the contributions of ordinary citizens in a time of acute crisis.

Tovino Thomas – most familiar to non-Malayalam audiences as the superhero from Minnal Murali – leads an estimable cast. Thomas plays Anoop, a former Army soldier who, like the pug in the Vodafone commercials, is always happy to help.

The small town where Anoop lives will soon bear the brunt of a cataclysmic downpour. As the clouds pour unrelenting havoc on the earth, numerous characters rise to the occasion, among them a fisherman and his sons, a Tamil truck driver, an Abu Dhabi-returned executive and a television network head who sets the alarm bells ringing earlier than the government.

The roster of actors is almost too long to mention – Indrans, Kunchako Boban, Lal, Asif Ali, Aju Varghese, Aparna Balamurali, Jaffar Idukki, Narain, Kalaiyarasan. Varghese stars in a comical sub-plot as a driver tasked with ferrying a Polish couple around.

Boban plays an official at the government’s disaster management cell. Lal represents the fisherfolk who provides invaluable assistance to the state government by using their boats for rescue operations. Asif Ali plays a struggling model who, like so many others in the movie, steps up when the situation reaches a breaking point.

The hero of the loosely structured narrative is Thomas’s Anoop, whose ready smile and broad-chested charm are put to good use. If a team of big-name actors selflessly depict walk-on parts, another team of stellar technicians recreate the floods to almost worrying detail.

Joseph, working closely with cinematographer Akhil George, production designer Mohanan and the visual effects provided by Mindstein Studios, dunks us right into the action. Whether it is the massive pools of water that destroy homes and take lives, or the relief camps set up for the displaced, or even the raging Arabian Sea itself, Joseph ensures that his recreation of a well-documented event is superbly detailed, never tacky, and always credible.

Several heart-stopping moments ensue as humans struggle to swim to safety. Some of the sequences are milked for maximum effect. There is an abundance of water and no shortage of tears as the flood victims struggle to combat a situation beyond their understanding.

Is it overstretched? Yes. Is it digressive? Sure. Is it excessively sentimental? Of course. Does it lack complexity? Affirmative. Is it affecting? Without doubt.

Moving back and forth in time, 2018 aims to be the definitive account of the floods. The film is stacked with humans, but its most impressive feat is technical in nature. Just like the people of Kerala used whatever was at hand to save themselves, 2018 deploys every available cinematic resource to craft an absorbing and engrossing chronicle of a disaster specific to Kerala but also universal for anybody who has learnt to fear climate change.

2018 (Everyone is a Hero) திரைப் பார்வை: பேரிடரில் துளிர்க்கும் பேரன்பும், அட்டகாசமான திரை அனுபவமும்!

அகில் பி.தர்மஜனுடன் இணைந்து எழுதி, ஜுட் ஆன்டனி ஜோசப் இயக்கியிருக்கும் மலையாளத் திரைப்படம் '2018' (Everyone is a Hero). 2018-ம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் கேரள மாநிலத்தில் பெய்த பெருமழை பாதிப்புகளையும் அதை எதிர்கொண்ட அம்மக்களின் மன உறுதியையும், வலிகளையும் பேசுகிறது இத்திரைப்படம். இதுபோன்ற பேரிடர் காலத்தில், சிறுசிறு உதவிகளுடன் நீளும் ஒவ்வொரு கரங்களின் சொந்தக்காரரும் உண்மையில் ஹீரோக்கள்தான் என்பதுதான் இந்தப் படத்தின் ஒன்லைன்.

Disaster films are not often made in Indian Cinema. Whereas 2018: Everyone Is Hero belongs to this rare category. It attempts to depict the story of Kerala’s biggest tragedy on the big screen. The film has been making a great noise and turned out to be the biggest blockbuster in Malayalam. The film is dubbed into Telugu. Will the film live upto all its hype? Let’s find out.

Massive floods hit Kerala in 2018 and officials are forced to open the gates of dams. This puts the lives of so many people in danger. Former soldier Anup (Tovino Thomas), Fisherman Lal and his two sons Narain, Asif Ali and Ramesh (Vineeth Srinivasan), who returns from Dubai to see his ailing mother, Sethupathi (Kalayirasan), a truck driver, and many others lives are affected. The film is about how such a natural calamity is fought with grit and courage.

Performances

Tovino Thomas breathes life into the role. The character arc for his role evolves gradually with the film. Lal and his two sons Narain, Asif Ali (model) shouldered the film at the crucial juncture. They play a major part as the fishermen and inspire others. Aparna Balamurali does justice to her role of TV journalist which has limitations. Kunchacko Boban and Vineeth Srinivasan are under-used. Their roles don’t rise beyond a point. The best part of 2018 is none of the characters deviate from the story and each role has some significance.

Technicalities

Technically, 2018 has solid elements. The writing and screenplay worked brilliantly. Jude Anthany Joseph’s direction is an asset. Production design, Visual effects and Cinematography are the pillars of the film. The flood visuals give a realistic experience.

Scenes In First Half Telugu Dubbing

Disaster films and survival stories have an interesting premise. Here in 2018, there is more. The film has humankindness at the heart. When a national calamity strikes and lives of so many people are at stake, even the government is helpless. It looks for the aid of the Armed forces. But then comes the unsung heroes.

Fishermen community voluntarily came forward to rescue the people in danger. This is the biggest strength of Jude Anthany Joseph directorial. The action elements are intense. The emotion is heartfelt. The gripping narration combined with natural performances make 2018 a thrilling watch.

The first half introduces several characters and their short stories. But there is a tragedy looming large that makes one care for these characters. The director builds curiosity. The genre of disaster is optimally used to keep the tension till the end. The visuals are endearing.

The characters and their arcs show the director’s hold on the craft. The inspirational scenes act as a big boost. The grit and courage of people in the tested times is shown well. The soul of the film is humanity and putting one’s own life at risk to rescue others lives. This subtle message in 2018 tugs at the heartstrings.

It is the gripping second half which gives an edge-of-seat experience. The sound-design is flawless. The production scale and design scores well as well. Technically, there is nothing much to point at. 2018 has its own share of issues. The Telugu dubbing puts us off. Definitely the dubbing portion and dialogues could be better. Some portions in the first half act as hindrance. The film has cinematic liberties. Some of the characters were not rounded off. Barring these, 2018 is a thrilling watch and well-made disaster film. Go for it.

2018 Movie Review: A Tad Simplistic, But A Thoroughly Moving Reminder About Hope And Humanity

Early on in Jude Anthany Joseph ’s  2018,  we get an establishing shot we’ve seen so often in our movies that we’re primed to dismiss it as another small-town cliche. We’ve just been introduced to the village folk and the happy, hilly village they’re residents of and right at the centre is a lean chapel. The director uses a crane shot here that takes us up from ground-level until it rests on the cross that overlooks this village. In another film, this is just another symbol to show us how God remains a watchful guardian, ensuring the safety of the people. Yet it takes us more than two hours to understand why Jude chose this particular shot to establish this village. When the entire place sinks in 2018’s deluge, this tall chapel sinks with it too. Not only does it show us the depth of the water that has poured in, but it brings one of the film’s heroes face to face with a statue of Jesus. When all hope is lost, how beautifully poetic is this image to remind us of the many nobodies who doubled up as Gods to become our guardian. 

This feeling of surprise becomes the norm in a film we may have underestimated at the beginning. Not only does the writer-director find clever payoffs for seemingly inconsequential details we may have noticed, but he takes it a step further to ensure that this cleverness is felt in the gut more than in the head. Another such idea is the way we see a roof tile falling into a classroom when a new teacher takes charge. We dismiss this too as a silly joke to show us another crumbling government school. The payoff for this comes later when a helicopter needs to hover over this building, sending these tiles flying all over. Dilapidated sure, yet it is this modest school that becomes a shelter for all those who’ve lost their homes.

One of the many reasons why such moments hit us hard is because Jude chooses to split the film into a shorter one-hour portion before the interval and then a longer uninterrupted sequence that focuses on thrilling rescue operations. The sound of rain (Vishnu Govind has done the sound) becomes such a constant in the background here that we’re hit with silence the second we cut to a time and place without rain. Not just in terms of sound, but the juxtaposition between places evolves organically to give us the feeling of an event that’s bigger than Kerala and the characters we’re rooting for. In one shot, we see a family on a boat tearing up as they say goodbye to their home. The very next is the smile of a Tamil girl who is experiencing rain, perhaps for the first time, in her drought-stricken village across the border (the reverse too happens when this girl appears right before a shot of models performing under fake rain in Kerala).

The intermingling of multiple tight storylines do the rest to make sure the film moves with the pace of a thriller, pausing only when it has to underline a strong emotion. Some of these, like the screams of a mute child leading to his family’s rescue, delivers this emotion without it feeling too dramatic. Other sub-plots, like the one involving two quarrelling brothers, do not quite achieve its full dramatic effect. 

But when so many other characters and stories succeed in creating strong connections, we notice how we’re always worried for most of them when the film shifts away from one sub-plot to another for a brief period. Even when some of these stories feel simplistic, often resulting in the kind of ending we’ve predicted, we’re still waiting for its completion to experience the love we have for those people. And with most of these characters following basic redemption arcs, like the scared army officer who wants to display his courage, they work like tiny short films that come together as a whole to hold a larger emotion. 

And these emotions work constantly because there is consistency across all performances. The like-ability Tovino Thomas generates for Anoop works just as well as Asif Ali ’s character, a fashion model who is embarrassed of the fisherman family he hails from. We’re invested in Bhasietttan’s (Indrans) welfare just as much as we’re waiting for Lal to show a symbolic middle finger to the rich man who insulted him earlier. 

Even in terms of the making, you’re always in awe of how they were able to pull it off without us ever feeling the limitations of a set or a relatively smaller budget for this genre. The visuals are captivating too (like a drone shot mirroring a lane of houses, slowly disappearing under water) and you’re able to fully experience the intensity of such a tragedy both in the wideness of scale and in the tiniest of spaces where we feel claustrophobic. If there was one issue with the film it’s perhaps the loudness of the score drowning out events and dialogues that are already loud. 

With the sensitive writing and with several touches that are just as satisfying as a mass hero moment in a mega film,  2018  works effectively as an emotional reminder of a tragedy we may have worked hard to forget. But when this reminder is infused with so much humanity and care, we do not dwell on the losses, shifting our memories instead to the kind of selfless love and care that helped us survive 2018, even if we’ve all gone back to our individual, selfish ways after. The hope and the heroes come rushing back as we witness the story of triumph, told in the most triumphant way. Isn’t this the  real  Kerala Story?

கல்கி 2898AD திரைப்படம் தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, இந்தி, மலையாளம், கன்னடம் என பான் இந்தியா படமாக தயாராகி உள்ளது. இப்படத்தில் நானி, விஜய் தேவரகொண்டா, துல்கர் சல்மான், கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ் ஆகியோரும் கேமியோ ரோலில் நடித்துள்ளனர். இப்படம் இன்று உலகமெங்கும் பிரம்மாண்டமாக ரிலீஸ் ஆகி உள்ளது. இப்படத்தின் முதல் காட்சியை பார்த்த ரசிகர்கள் தங்கள் விமர்சனத்தை எக்ஸ் தளத்தில் பதிவிட்ட வண்ணம் உள்ளனர். அதை விரிவாக பார்க்கலாம்.

கல்கி 2898AD ஓகே-வாக உள்ளது. அமிதாப் பச்சன் மாஸ் காட்டி இருக்கிறார். பிரபாஸுக்கு கேமியோ கதாபாத்திரம் மட்டுமே. புஜ்ஜி கதாபாத்திரம் நகைச்சுவையாக உள்ளது. கமலின் நடிப்பு மற்றும் சந்தோஷ் நாராயணின் பின்னணி இசை நன்றாக உள்ளது. முதல்பாதி ஆவரேஜாகவும், இரண்டாம் பாதி அதைவிட நன்றாகவும் உள்ளது. ஆனால் நீளம் அதிகம். இண்டர்வெல் காட்சி சூப்பர். கிளைமாக்ஸ் மற்றும் இரண்டாம் பாகத்துக்கான லீடு வேறலெவல், எமோஷனல் கனெக்ட் சுத்தமாக இல்லை. படத்தின் ஐடியா மற்றும் பிரம்மாண்ட மேக்கிங்கிற்காக ஒரு முறை பார்க்கலாம். என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

கல்கி 2898AD படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் நிறைய மாஸ் காட்சிகள் உள்ளன. திரைக்கதையும் அருமையாக உள்ளது. இதன் இரண்டாம் பாதிக்காகவே படத்தை மறுபடியும் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என குறிப்பிட்டு உள்ளார்.

கல்கி 2898AD படத்தில் பிரபாஸின் நடிப்பு வெறித்தனமாக உள்ளது. சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் பின்னணி இசையில் தெறிக்கவிட்டுள்ளார். சொல்லப்போனால் அவர் தான் இப்படத்தின் இரண்டாவது ஹீரோ, விஜய் தேவரகொண்டா, துல்கர் சல்மான் மற்றும் ராஜமவுலி ஆகியோரின் கேமியோ வேறலெவல் என பாராட்டி இருக்கிறார்.

கல்கி 2898AD பிரபாஸின் திரைப்படம் இல்லை அமிதாப் பச்சனின் படம். பிரபாஸை விட அமிதாப்புக்கே படத்தில் அதிகப்படியான காட்சிகள் இருக்கின்றன என குறிப்பிட்டு உள்ளார்.

Kalki 2898 AD Review : ஹாலிவுட் தரத்திலான விசுவல்கள் மற்றும் காமெடியாக பிரபாஸ் பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தும் 2ம் பாதி என கல்கி படம் கலக்கலாக உள்ளதாக முதல் பார்வை விமர்சனங்கள் கூறுகின்றன.

பிரபாஸ் , தீபிகா படுகோனே நடித்த கல்கி திரைப்படம் பலத்த எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுக்கு மத்தியில் இன்று உலகம் முழுவதும் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. அமெரிக்காவில் நடந்த பிரீமியர் காட்சியின் முதல் அறிக்கைகள் இங்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

படத்தின் முதல் பாதியில் பிரபாஸ்க்கு குறைவான காட்சிகளே இருந்தாலும், இரண்டாவது பாதியில் திரை முழுவதும் விரவிக்கிடந்து தெறிக்கவிடுகிறார். அமிதாப்பச்சன், கமலஹாசன் மறறும் தீபிகா படுகோனேவின் காட்சிகள் முதல் பாதியை கலக்குகின்றன.

உலக ரசிகர்களுக்கு இந்தியாவில் இருந்து விருந்தளிக்கச் சென்றுள்ள திரைப்படம்தான் கல்கி. கதை மகாபாரத காவியத்தில் இருந்து வேரூன்றுகிறது. பரபரப்பான காட்சிகள் இங்கும் அங்கும் இருந்தாலும், இந்தியாவின் சிறந்த காவிய படங்களுக்கு கல்கி ஒரு நல்ல துவக்கமாக இருக்கும்.

Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review Ratings: Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review Ratings: Pan-India star Prabhas has been doing high-budget and star-studded films after his image grew manifold after Baahubali 1 and Baahubali 2. The actor's latest is a science fiction actioner with a mythological connection and the most expensive movie ever made in India.

Using a staggering budget of Rs 600 Crore and starring legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone among others, Nag Ashwin's directorial hit the screens worldwide to sky-high expectations on June 27.

Story: Kalki 2898 AD is the story of three cities in the post-apocalyptic world named Kashi, Shambala, and the Complex. The Rebels and refugees living in Shambala fight against the atrocities of the Complex, ruled by Supreme Yaskin. Bhairava (Prabhas) is a bounty hunter who always dreams of going to the Complex by earning 1 million units. When SUM 80 aka Sumathi (Deepika Padukone), manages to escape the Complex, Bhairava and Ashwattama fight for her for two different agendas. The people of Shambala believe Sumathi is believed to be the mother who births the hope (Kalki) for tomorrow.

Technical Aspects:

The movie screams quality and rich visuals, which takes it a notch higher for an Indian film of the sci-fi genre. The set designs of Kashi, Shambala, and Complex are carefully designed to stick to the time the story was established. Nag Ashwin had conceived a great idea to mix mythology with the future but slightly deviated from the form when it came to the film's screenplay and storytelling.

The background score composed by Santhosh Narayanan was only adequate and didn't stand out. The dubbing and the dialogue diction of the characters could've been better. The visual effects and the stunning visuals bring a Hollywood-style theatrical experience.

Performances:

Prabhas as Bhairava did what was expected of him with ease and carried the entire film with his image single-handedly. Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwattama is a befitting choice. The veteran is a delight to watch on the screen in his get-up. Deepika Padukone gets a meaty role and her character drives the entire story from 3100 BC to 2898 AD. Kamal Haasan as the Supreme Yaskin commands attention for as much as his time on the screen. Brahmanandam, Shobana, Rajendra Prasad, and others appeared in small roles which they cake-walked. However, Disha Patani's character Roxy is just wasted and redundant.

Verdict: Kalki 2898 AD is an attempt that deserves a theatrical watch for the brilliant visuals and effects Nag Ashwin brought to the Indian screens. The movie's narration is dotted with interesting cameos and makes for a time-pass watch this weekend.

Kalki 2898 AD movie review: Prabhas overshadowed by towering Amitabh Bachchan in Nag Ashwin’s ambitious, star-studded spectacle

Kalki 2898 ad movie review: kalki may have prabhas as the headliner, but it is amitabh bachchan all the way -- his ashwatthama is suitably gravelly and towers over the film. kamal haasan comes on sparingly but does leave an impact..

A couple of things wrestled for front-of-cortex space while I was watching ‘Kalki 2898 AD’: this Telugu language sci-fi film, set in, what else, 2898 AD, is the first comprehensive pan-Indian film. The trend which has been gathering force in the last few years has resulted in a cast which is drawn, literally, from all the major filmmaking centres in India, straddling Bengal and Kerala, and everything in between.

And the other was just how hard it is for Indian tent poles to have a screenplay which is tight and gripping all the way through. I can’t remember a recent film of this staggering size and scale, mounted with such ambition, being such a plod to begin with.

Pre-interval, Kalki , which happily borrows its aesthetics from all kinds of futuristic films (with flashes of Mad Max, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings, and even, yes, a glimpse of the godawful Adipurush, and, of course, the Bahubali-RRR slate, showing major indebtedness to the Amar Chitra Katha universe) meanders, stops and starts, remembers that it needs to bung in a set piece here and a set piece there, and then slumps back again. Oh, and how did I forget Bladerunner, and Dune in terms of influences? The latter is an ‘inspiration’ for the film’s posters, in both image and font. Hard to believe? Check it out for yourself.

The second half, which is clearly reserved for the big-hero-villain-confrontations, shakes things up somewhat, and saves the film from being a total snoozefest. And it redeems itself, just in the nick of time, by a rousing climax, where everyone comes out, literally, all guns blazing.

As it goes about setting the scene, doing the world-building thing, introducing us to its myriad characters, it is a hard sell. Yes, there’s Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama, the mighty saviour, who has survived several ‘sadis’, from the age of the Mahabharat to ‘kaliyuga’, and the time that it is set in, where the last avatar of Vishnu is meant to appear to save the world. Talk to the hand, and also, read the Puranas, where this is a much-beloved prophecy. Of course, it is a Hindu rashtra (but then the film does say that it is inspired by the Hindu scriptures), and set in Kashi, ‘where Ma Ganga has dried up washing away our sins’, as a character puts it, so maybe that’s why there’s so much Hindu iconography, just like in the Baahubali-RRR films. But those were period films. Is this what the future holds? Ooh.

And yes, there’s Kamal Hassan as the evil Supreme Yaskin, who lords over the ‘Complex’, a utopian city which hovers over Kashi, the only liveable city left in a world gone desiccated and dry. His entourage includes Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee, trying hard to muster up adequate menace, and managing to hit the mark once or twice), and a curly-haired soothsayer (Anil George) who talks darkly about divine intervention and ancient weapons (behold the ‘Gandeeva dhanush ’) being supercharged again.

And, of course, there’s Prabhas, as bounty hunter Bhairava, who is meant to be headlining this movie, but is to be found clowning around much more than flexing his muscles. He makes us wait, and wait, and wait, to actually hit his stride, in which he finally turns business-like, smiting the ungodly hip and thigh. Sigh.

There’s Deepika Padukone as the lab-lady SUM-80 or Sumati, in whose ‘kokh’ nestles the The One, waiting to come out and take charge. Outfitted in a very chic shaggy haircut, and a toga-like thing, she is referred to as Ma. There’s Disha Patani, who shows up to do god only knows what, and then disappears, and we forget about her even when she is on screen. There’s Shobhana as the Senior Mother, who presides over a Utopian land across the high mountains called Shambhala, where green leaves still grow. This is where the resistance to the all-powerful Supreme hides out, and this is where all roads lead to, when a rescue posse, accompanied by the spirited Kyra (Anna Ben, who lifts things up nicely even if briefly), who along with her compatriots (Pasupathy and Pasha) shows up just at the right time.

The thing is, a film of this order of magnitude, will be a sprawl. It will have a whole array of characters. That’s a given. It also has an entire phalanx of celebrity cameos which makes for several fan moments, and not much else. The challenge is to keep everything up and running, while keeping us suitably engaged. ‘Kalki’ manages to do this only post-interval, after getting us all bored and impatient in the first. The worst part are the laugh tracks– large tracts of which are given to Prabhas to shoulder– which just don’t land. I can’t say if it’s the same in the Telugu or Tamil versions, but in the Hindi version that I watched, most of the attempted humour comes off unfunny, and slows the film down. The only exception is a robot called Bujji (voiced by Keerthy Suresh), fashioned as Bhairava’s cutesy, smart-mouthed side-kick, who induces a smile.

And yes, this may have Prabhas as the headliner, but it is Amitabh Bachchan all the way: his Ashwatthama is suitably gravelly and epic-like, as he sets about roundly bashing and punching poor Bhairava, in one of the best set-pieces in the film. He towers over the film, both literally and metaphorically, reminding you of the Bachchan of yore, who ‘made the line begin where he stood’. As to Kamal Haasan , he comes on sparingly, and saves his best for the last, but being Kamal Haasan, does leave an impact.

So who’s up for the next instalment? The question is: will it waste less of our time, and commit more to its undeniable comic-book appeal?

Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone, opened with a massive Rs 191.5 crore at the worldwide box office. However, on its second day, the film witnessed a major dip with a collection of only Rs 54 crore, a drop of over 43 percent. The film's Telugu version saw the biggest dip, earning only Rs 25.65 crore on day 2.
