My Ambition Essay

My Ambition

The ambition of any person’s life usually depends on their choice and interests. I aspire to be a great dancer . I have always had the knack for dancing from an early age. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my passion. Like most of the parents, they never discouraged me because it is not the most sought after career.

Subsequently, I wish to become a good dancer. I do not want the fame of being a dancer; rather I want the acclaim of being a good dancer. As my parents motivated me to pursue my dream, they enrolled me in dance classes. It helped me grow a lot as a dancer and also enhance my skills.

Most importantly, I wish to be a dance because I want to remove the stigma surrounding this career path. I want to set an example that you can do well in life if you’re not a doctor or engineer. Especially in India, where these two ambitions are considered the most valid.

I believe in the power of dance, and how it conveys the message without words. Dance is the language of the soul, and it makes me feel alive when I indulge in it.

How To Write An Eagle Scout Statement of Ambition & Life Purpose

Title: Eagle Scout Statement of Ambitions and life purpose

Before you can begin Eagle Scout rank requirement 7 and hold your final board of review, you’ll be tasked with writing a comprehensive essay that discusses your long-term goals and values. This piece of writing, which must be submitted with your Eagle rank application, is called a Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose!

What is an Eagle Scout Statement of Ambitions And Life Purpose? An Eagle Scout Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose is a short essay, written by an Eagle Scout candidate, that describes their goals, values, and mindsets. Often, these statements are about 500 words in length and are broken into 4 parts: Intro, short-term goals, long-term goals, and life purpose.

PS. This article is based on the experiences and research of Eagle Scout, Kevin A and Cole  🙂

While most Eagle Scouts (myself at the time, included!) usually aren’t aware that they even need to write this essay until the last minute, it’s actually an incredibly important thing to do. Why? Well, the Chair of your final Eagle Scout Board of Review will be reading your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose and asking you questions, accordingly!

Additionally, writing a Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose gives you the chance to start thinking about your life’s vision. What do you hope to give to the world? Where do you see yourself in 3 years? These are all very important questions, and this essay might be one of the first times in your life where you’re directly asked to critically think about what you want your future to hold!

Plus, your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose is a great foundation upon which you can write an amazing Eagle Scout college application . (Click the link for my ultimate guide to getting Eagle Scout college acceptances) Kill two birds with one stone by using this statement to outline your thoughts for college and beyond! Trust me, my own Eagle Statement of Ambitions really set my sights in the right direction. I promise it’ll help you too if you put a lot of thought into it, dig deep, and keep an open mind.

With all that being said, you’re probably wondering how to write a great essay of your own. Not to fear! In this article, I’ll be using my own Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose essay as an example to get your writing juices flowing! Then, I’ll give you some questions to reflect on, so you can make your essay even better than mine was. 😉

My Example Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose Essay

First, take a second to read through my example essay. This is a bit shorter than the typical essay of 500 words (2 double-spaced pages), but it should give you a good idea of what’s required. Then, in the following sections, we’ll be reviewing each component, from the introduction to your life vision, so that you can create an incredible statement of your own!

Without further ado, here’s Kevin and my example Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose:

1. Introduction: “Reflecting back, as I’m now applying for Eagle, the highest rank in Scouting, I realize just how far I’ve come. Not only have I learned how to light a fire with a single match, tie a bowline around myself with one hand, and sell ungodly amounts of Trail’s End popcorn — no, Scouting had given me much more. Scouting has given me the core values and principles that I now carry with me through my life.”  2. Short Term Goals: “In my high school life, I am planning on taking two Advanced Placement courses: AP Environmental Science and AP English Language and Composition. These courses, though challenging, will hopefully help me expand my knowledge into areas that I may be interested in pursuing while at college.”  “My next big hurdle comes in the form of college applications. Between club responsibilities, AP classes, Scouting, and friends, I’ll be hard-pressed to find the time. However, like earning Eagle, nothing worthwhile comes easy. To achieve my short term goals I’ll set a schedule, make a plan, and check things off one requirement at a time.” 3. Long-Term Goals “Upon graduating from high school, I want to attend a four-year college within the University of California system. I have not decided what studies to pursue in college, but I am leaning towards majoring in the chemistry field.”  “In college, I hope to develop the skills and connections to land a chemical engineering job where I can directly help others. I want a comfortable salary, and the expertise to have my ideas be heard within the workforce. I won’t be satisfied simply remaining a follower in my field and intend to lead others to help bring about breakthroughs that improve human wellbeing.” 4. Life Purpose “My ultimate vision for life is to become an individual who lifts others up. Growing up an only child, I always felt best whenever I was able to contribute to the people around me. Whether it’s making scientific breakthroughs, leading a team, or even teaching scouts, my life’s purpose will always be to do good for others.” “Although my specific goals will probably change as I grow older and experience the world from a different perspective, I know that the values I learned from Scouting will forever remain in my mind and heart. Regardless of what I end up doing, while I’m doing it I’ll be physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

If you’ve read through our essay, by now you should have a few ideas bouncing around your head about what to write in your own Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose. Write them down ASAP! Those ideas will serve as your essay’s foundations. 🙂

Now if you’re like most teens, you might instead be thinking, “I’m worried that I won’t be able to stick to my goals and ambitions that I wrote down because I’m not sure what I truly want to do with my life!” Yup, I’ve been there too. However, if this is something you’re worried about, don’t fret!

  • Firstly, your Eagle Board of Review team won’t be making you promise to fulfill every single goal you set in your essay, as they realize that most Eagle Scout applicants (and most teens in general) don’t have everything figured out in terms of their life goals.
  • Secondly, in the following sections, I’ve prepared some questions for you that might give you a better idea of your actual ambitions and life purpose!
Here’s a tip: When reading the questions we pose, take your time. Try to think critically and come up with any answer. Then, ask yourself, “is my answer true, for me?” If it isn’t, question why you thought of it. Ask if it’s true in any way.

Doing this exercise will help you succeed in one of the most important areas of your life: knowing yourself . Now, it’s time to read through a detailed breakdown of our essay and answer the questions we’ve posed so that you can create an amazing statement of your own! Let’s go!

Introducing Your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose

Your introductory paragraph should go over some of the most impactful experiences you’ve had in Scouting thus far, as well as what you’ve learned from those experiences. Some experiences you can highlight are times when you acted as a leader, times where you learned an important value, or even things that you learned in Scouting that you’ve applied to a situation outside of Scouting.

The important part here is to consider what you’ve learned from your Scouting career (Hopefully, a lot). The Eagle Rank is the highest rank in Scouting, and with it comes a wealth of experiences and wisdom that you’ve had to learn along the way. Here is how I chose to tie in what I learned from Scouting:

“Reflecting back, as I’m now applying for Eagle, the highest rank in Scouting, I realize just how far I’ve come. Not only have I learned how to light a fire with a single match, tie a bowline around myself with one hand, and sell ungodly amounts of Trail’s End popcorn — no, Scouting had given me much more. Scouting has given me the core values and principles that I now carry with me through my life.”

Your introduction shouldn’t be long-winded, as you’ll have many other parts of your essay to get into more detail. Keeping it brief and to the point will likely be the most effective approach to completing your introduction. When writing your intro, here are a few questions you could ask yourself:

Introductory Questions to Consider

  • What part of the Scout Oath and Law means the most to you? How have you lived by it in your Scouting and non-Scouting life?
  • What is a specific Scouting experience you’ve had where you’ve learned something of great value? What did you learn? How did you end up learning it?
  • How have you most changed from when you were a new Scout?  Think back to who you were, as a person, when just entering Scouting.
  • When you hear the word “Scouting,” what comes to mind? Why?

Short-Term Goals for High School

The focus of your next section should be the goals you’d like to complete before finishing high school. These short-term goals can be academic (like getting all A’s), extracurricular (Like making varsity), or even personally-related (such as a hobby, interest, or side-business).

This section can also be used to describe how to plan to achieve these goals. Success comes from making solid plans and then executing on them, so make sure you think about how to achieve your goals. This way they won’t just be dreams! Here’s how I wrote about my high school goals:

“In my high school life, I am planning on taking two Advanced Placement courses: AP Environmental Science and AP English Language and Composition. To achieve my short term goals I’ll set a schedule, make a plan, and check things off one requirement at a time.”

While I highly encourage you to talk about your extracurricular or personal goals as well, I’d highly recommend that you mention your high school academics in some way when writing this section.

Even if you don’t have plans to continue your education after high school, the main point of this part of your life is likely to become educated and graduate with your high school diploma. As such, a portion of this section should be dedicated to discussing your academics (it could even be one sentence stating that you plan on finishing high school!).

Short-term Questions to Consider

  • Are there any classes you want to take before you graduate, such as any AP or IB classes? Why do you want to take these classes? How do you think they could help in your future?
  • Do you have any goals you want to complete in your extracurricular activities? How can you take on more leadership in your teams, clubs, and community service groups?
  • Are there any personal interests you’ve developed while in high school that might steer you towards a certain career?  Consider things you’re good at, love doing, and might make you money.

Long-Term Goals For After Graduation

This section focuses on your long-term plans after graduating from high school. There are many avenues you could pursue after your graduation! Will you be going to a trade school? The military? Continuing your education by attending a four-year university or a community college? Heading straight to the workforce? The possibilities are endless! 🙂

I’d recommend considering how you want your life after high school to look (especially since it’ll be happening eventually). Think not just about continued education, but also the values and jobs you’ll be taking on. Here’s how I discussed my own plans in this section of my Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose:

“Upon graduating from high school, I want to attend a four-year college within the University of California system. I won’t be satisfied simply remaining a follower in my field and intend to lead others to help bring about breakthroughs that improve human wellbeing.”

This section gives you a lot of freedom to express yourself; you can go into as much detail as you’d like when explaining your post-graduate plans. For example, if you’re sure that you want to enter a trade school, feel free to talk about the steps you’re going to take in order to get trained, certified, and hired for the trade of choice!

Since you’ll be earning your Eagle Rank soon, it’s vital that you learn how to Properly List Eagle Scout On Your Resume . Not only does this improve your odds of landing a job and getting into a good school, it’ll also help you to more effectively describe your Scouting experiences (and learn from them, too)!

Here’s a Tip: Be realistic, but also dream big! Since in this section you can talk about your desired career, feel free to set a big, hairy, audacious goal (I call this a BHAG). Setting a huge, motivating goal for your future can spur you into action and help you to accomplish anything!

With your BHAG in mind, here are a few questions to consider that can point you in the right direction when writing this section:

Long-term Questions to Consider

  • If you’re planning on entering the workforce, what type of job are you looking for? What steps might you take to increase your chances of being hired for the position you’re interested in?
  • If you’re planning on joining the military, what branch of the military are you interested in joining? Why do you want to join this section of the military?
  • If you’re planning on going to trade school, what type of trade interests you? Do you know any schools that excel in teaching this trade? Do you want to start your own business with this trade or join an existing company?
  • If you’re planning on continuing your education, will you be going to a community college or a four-year university? What do you want to get out of your continued education, and how will you make it happen?
  • If none of these options apply to you, what will you be doing? Do you have plans to do one of the previous options eventually or are you planning on sticking to your original plans for a long time?
  • In a perfect world, where do you see yourself in 5 years? What do you want to (and not want to ) be doing?

Your Life’s Purpose and Values

The final section of your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose should be used to describe your ultimate life’s vision. What do you really want out of life? Good topics to consider for this section could include plans about a future family, community involvement, and bucket-list experiences.

One thing you should try to mention in this section is how you plan to use the lessons you’ve learned from Scouting when you’re older. You don’t have to promise to return to Scouting in the future (although if you do see yourself volunteering, be sure to mention it), but you should try to discuss how you’ll use what you’ve learned to better the world.

Here is how I chose to describe my life’s purpose and values:

“My ultimate vision for life is to become an individual who lifts others up. Growing up an only child, I always felt best whenever I was able to contribute to the people around me. Whether it’s making scientific breakthroughs, leading a team, or even teaching Scouts, my life’s vision will always be to do good for others.” “Although my specific goals will probably change as I grow older and experience the world from a different perspective, I know that the values I learned from Scouting will forever remain in my mind and heart. Regardless of what I end up doing, while I’m doing it I’ll be physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

If you’re having trouble figuring out how to write this last section, keep in mind that your goals are only half of the question. Consider what values you feel are most important to you as well. What brings purpose and meaning to your life? There’s no right or wrong answer here, so feel free to expand on these points as much as you’d like!

You can honestly take any direction you’d like when writing about your life’s purpose, but I’d recommend asking yourself the following questions to first gain some clarity:

Life Purpose Questions to Consider

  • Think about when you’ll be 30-40 years old. What do you picture your life will be like at that age? What will you have accomplished? What part of doing that will make you happy?
  • How will you stay involved with your family when you’re older? Do you have plans on eventually having a family of your own?
  • What would you most like to do in your free time? Do you plan to travel, volunteer, or maybe even do something else?
  • How will you stay involved in your community when you’re older? How close do you want to be with others in your community? Do you want to be a mentor?
  • If you could assign yourself a life ‘theme,’ what would it be? Some ideas include creativity, integrity, resourcefulness, or anything else you can come up with. How will you embody this theme in your life purpose?

Conclusion

Although the ideas you’ll cover in your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose will likely change as you get older, I really encourage you to be as detailed as possible when writing your essay. Believe me, when you’re older you’ll look back on this essay and appreciate the glimpse it gives you into your life right now!

Your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose is essentially a time capsule of your teenage self, so it’s vital to do it right. By using the structure we covered in this article, and asking yourself important questions about how you want your life to look, I’m sure you’ll create an awesome essay! 🙂

Long Essay On My Ambition

Everyone has ambitions in life, no matter how big or small. We all have our own hopes and dreams that we strive to achieve. In this article, we will explore the importance of having ambition and how it can motivate us to reach our goals. We’ll also look at what happens when ambition takes hold of us and how it can be used positively or negatively in life. So come along on this journey to uncover the power of ambition!

Introduction

An ambition is a strong desire to achieve something. In life, everyone has an ambition. However, not all ambitions are the same. Some people want to be rich, while others want to be famous. Some people want to make a difference in the world, while others just want to make themselves happy.

My ambition is to be happy. I know that sounds like a simple ambition, but for me it is the most important thing. I want to be happy with what I have and who I am. I don’t want to strive for things that I don’t need and that will only make me unhappy in the end.

I know that happiness is not a destination; it is a journey. And I am on my journey to happiness. I am taking each day as it comes and enjoying the ride. I am learning new things and growing as a person. And each day, my happiness grows a little bit more.

I am grateful for what I have and for the opportunities that come my way. And I know that if I stay positive and keep moving forward, happiness will always be within reach.

What is my ambition?

There are different types of ambitions. Some people want to be rich, others want to be famous, and others just want to make a difference in the world. Whatever your ambition is, it’s important to have one. Ambition gives you something to strive for and something to look forward to. It can also help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.

If you’re not sure what your ambition is, take some time to think about what you want to achieve in life. What are your passions? What makes you happy? Once you have a good idea of what you want, you can start setting goals and working towards your ambition.

Remember, there’s no wrong answer when it comes to ambition. As long as it’s something that you’re passionate about and willing to work for, it can only lead to good things. So don’t be afraid to dream big – your ambition is what will make your life truly extraordinary.

Why Do I Have This Ambition?

There are many reasons why people have ambitions. Some people have ambitions because they want to make a difference in the world, while others have ambitions because they want to be successful. Whatever the reason, having an ambition is a good thing.

People who have ambitions are usually driven and motivated. They are always looking for ways to improve and reach their goals. People with ambitions tend to be high achievers. They are always setting new goals and working hard to achieve them.

Some people may have negative associations with ambition, but it is important to remember that ambition is not a bad thing. Ambition is what drives people to do great things. Without ambition, many of the world’s greatest accomplishments would never have been achieved.

Benefits of Having an Ambition

Many people have ambitions in life, whether it be to become a doctor, lawyer, or even president. But what are the benefits of having an ambition? Below are four benefits of having an ambition:

1. Helps You Stay Focused

When you have an ambition, it helps you stay focused on what you want to achieve. You are less likely to get sidetracked by other things that come up in life.

2. Gives You a Sense of Purpose

An ambition gives you a sense of purpose in life. It can be something to strive for and help keep you motivated.

3. Can Help You Overcome Obstacles

Having an ambition can help you overcome obstacles that come up in life. It can be something to keep you going when things get tough.

4. Makes You happier

Studies have shown that people who have ambitions and goals are generally happier than those who don’t. Having an ambition can give your life more meaning and make you feel more fulfilled.

How Can I Achieve My Ambition?

There is no one answer to the question of how you can achieve your ambition. Each person’s situation is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. However, there are some general principles that can help you to achieve your ambition.

1. Define your ambition. What do you want to achieve? What are your goals? Once you know what you want to achieve, you can start planning how to make it happen.

2. Set realistic goals. It’s important to set goals that are achievable. If your goals are too unrealistic, you’ll likely become discouraged and give up on your ambition altogether.

3. Make a plan. Once you know what your goals are, it’s time to start making a plan of action. What steps do you need to take in order to achieve your goal? Write down your plan and refer to it often so that you stay on track.

4. Take action. The most important part of achieving any goal is taking action towards it. Without taking action, nothing will ever happen! So get out there and start working towards your ambition today!

Obstacles That May Come With Achieving My Ambition

There are a few obstacles that may come with achieving my ambition. The first obstacle is time. I may not have enough time to dedicate to my ambition. The second obstacle is resources. I may not have the resources needed to achieve my ambition. The third obstacle is other people. Other people may not support my ambition or may even try to stop me from achieving it.

Overcoming These Obstacles

It is not easy to achieve anything great in life without encountering some obstacles. The same goes for writing an essay on my ambition. I have faced many difficulties while trying to write this piece, but I have overcome them and am now able to share my story with you.

The first obstacle I faced was coming up with a topic. I had so many ambitions, but didn’t know which one to write about. After brainstorming for a while, I finally decided on writing about my ambition to become a writer.

The second obstacle was actually starting the essay. Once I had chosen my topic, I still had to sit down and start writing. This was harder than it sounds because it is hard to start talking about oneself in an essay. However, after getting over that initial hurdle, the rest of the essay flowed smoothly.

The third and final obstacle was finishing the essay. This was probably the hardest part because it is difficult to talk about such personal things as ambitions and dreams. However, after much thought and reflection, I was finally able to come up with a conclusion that satisfied me.

Now that I have overcome these obstacles, I can confidently say that writing this essay has been one of the best things I have ever done. It has helped me to better understand myself and what I want out of life.

In conclusion, my ambition is to make a mark in the world that will last long after I pass away. Whether it’s through inspiring others with my words or by achieving great success in business, I want to be remembered for making an impact and leaving a legacy behind me. With hard work and dedication, anything is possible – so never give up on your dreams.

My Ambition in Life Essay

Ravi Rathore

Updated November 10, 2023

What is Ambition

Ambition refers to a strong desire or determination to succeed, accomplish goals, or attain a specific objective. The inner motivation drives individuals to work hard, set and pursue challenging targets, and strive for personal and professional growth. Ambition can take many forms, such as the desire to excel in one’s career, positively impact society, achieve financial prosperity, acquire knowledge and expertise, or attain a particular status or position in life.

Ambition is often accompanied by a sense of purpose and a willingness to make sacrifices and put in the necessary effort to turn aspirations into reality. It can be a powerful motivator that motivates people to overcome hurdles, endure in the face of adversity, and keep working toward their goals. However, it is important to balance the pursuit of ambition with ethical considerations and an awareness of the potential consequences of one’s actions. Excessive ambition can lead to negative outcomes if not managed wisely.

Ambitions encourage us to dream big, step out of our comfort zones, and achieve our full potential. They inspire us to contribute, create, and innovate, thereby leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. Pursuing our ambitions shapes our destinies and enhances the human experience through our achievements and aspirations. In essence, ambitions are the driving force that empowers us to turn our dreams into reality and make a meaningful impact on the world.

A Marine Biologist

A marine biologist is a dedicated scientist specializing in studying marine life, ecosystems, and their interactions. They explore various aspects of oceanography, including marine organisms, their behaviors, habitats, and the impact of human activities on marine environments.

Importance of Becoming a Marine Biologist:

  • Conservation of Marine Ecosystems : Marine biologists play a pivotal role in understanding and safeguarding marine ecosystems. Oceans cover a vast majority of the Earth, and they are home to diverse and delicate ecosystems. By studying these ecosystems, marine biologists contribute to their conservation and help protect the countless species that inhabit them.

My Ambition in Life: An Essay

Why is it that some people seem to make it far in life, have clear goals and vision, have dreams they go after, and seem to be constantly moving forwards, where others seem to be either directionless, jump from one interest to another, waste time in life , get bored quickly, or generally don’t know what they want to do in life ?

Well, it’s very possible they have a very clear aim in life , and, if asked what their ambition in life is, they would be able to say “my ambition in life is…” and follow it up with a clear and concise answer.

This knowledge of what their ambition in life is drives them forwards in life with energy and vigour. It keeps them on focus and gives them meaning in their life.

With that ambition, with that drive, with that meaning, their lives become exciting and interesting. They are unlikely to get bored or ponder on the meaning of life because they know what drives them.

This essay on ambition will explore the importance of having an ambition in life and gives tips on how to find your ambition in life.

So let’s get to it!

Marcus Aurelius quote on having ambition in life - "A man’s worth
is no greater
than the worth
of his
ambitions."

What is ambition?

Having an ambition in life is the idea that you have something you really want to go after. This could be considered your dream(s) in life or your goal(s) in life. Ambition is something you really want to achieve. It’s often something that means something to you in a way that is hard to define in words.

An ambition is something you really want to go after. It is something that drives you. Ambition sees you through when things get hard or boring because ambition gives you energy.

When you have an ambition to achieve something, you often work tirelessly and diligently towards that because the ambition in and of itself is enough to keep you pushing forwards.

An ambition shows itself when you are faced with potential road blocks, obstacles, objections from others or the outside world, and yet you still go for it anyway.

Frank Tyger quote on the importance of ambition - “Ambition is
enthusiasm
with
a purpose”

Ambition gives people meaning in their lives. It is something to go after, something to aim for, something that means something to you on a deep level.

Your ambition in life doesn’t need to be something that is important to anyone else. An ambition in life is a very personal thing, and what is important for you to go after might not mean anything to anyone else. In fact, they may look oddly at you for your ambition. But as long as you believe in your ambition, and it is something you want, then that does not matter.

An ambition in life could be to become a doctor, a famous actor, an astronaut, to provide free energy to the world, to restore habitats for wildlife, to end world hunger, etc. Your ambition in life can be anything that means something to you , that you really want to go after, that gives you energy and keeps you moving forwards.

So when thinking about this, think about what you want and what drives you . Don’t worry about anyone else in answering “my ambition in life is…”.

John D Rockefeller quote on having an ambition in life - “The man who
starts out simply
with the idea of
getting rich
won’t succeed.
you must have a
larger ambition.”

It’s important to go through life with energy, courage and determination because we have one life to live and we should live it to the full. If you have an ambition in life, you can be sure that you are taking advantage of this life you have aren’t wasting your life .

What having an ambition in life will give you

Wouldn’t it be great to wake up every day with the drive and ambition to move towards something you really want in life? How would it feel if you woke up with a clear vision of what you wanted and you had the total energy to go after that?

Having an ambition in life gives you focus and determination. It gives you a great purpose to get out of bed every day and go after your goals with vigour and positivity.

This motivation gives you a reason to be alive that goes beyond yourself. We all have a purpose in life, we just need to find it. We have something that we can give to the world, to society, to those around us, to the future.

Wouldn’t it feel great to know what your ambition in life is, what aim you have for your life, and be able to go after it with full courage and determination?

Steven Brust quote on why you need an ambition - “A young man
without
ambition is
an old man
waiting to be.”

This way of living will mean that you start to excel in other areas. When you have an ambition in life and go after it with your full energy, you will also find that you start taking action in other areas of your life. When you start to go after things that are important to you, you will also find that you want to achieve other things or help society in other ways.

You will likely also find that your confidence and feelings of self-worth grow. When you can look someone in the eye and say “my ambition in life is…” and answer it with clarity, energy, and confidence, that will give you a feeling of self-assurance that will make you feel good about yourself and help you to achieve in other areas of your life.

When you have a clear ambition in life, and you go after it, people will look up to you and respect you. You will respect yourself. And those things will help you achieve more in your life than you would without that courage and determination.

Samuel Johnson quote on my ambition in life - "To be happy
at home is
the ultimate
result of
all ambition."

The dangers of having no ambition in life

Without having a clear ambition in life, you run the risk of not living life to the full. When you have no clear ambition in life, it’s very easy to get pulled in directions you don’t really care about. If you don’t know where you want to go, inevitably you end up doing things in life as a reaction to what is going on around you instead of in response to what really drives you.

This is the difference between living a life of reaction vs living a life that is proactive. Living a proactive life is one where you determine what you want to do, and you take steps that are actively in service of that. Reactive living is where you do things based on what is going on around you or what others want from you. Reactive living can often feel very stressful and overwhelming, whereas proactive living helps you to feel more like you are in control.

When you have no clear aim in life , or no ambition, no goals, you tend to be reactive to the world around you. You tend to respond to what other people want and to fears. You tend to have no real focus and make decisions in the moment rather than in advance. You will likely have more of a chance of regretting some of your decisions if you live reactively, rather than knowing that your decisions always serve you in some way, whether or not they have the outcome you want, when you live proactively.

This can lead to you ending up in a place in life that doesn’t really mean anything to you, or to a place where you are not living to the fullest potential of your life. You could start questioning what the point of life is, you could have regrets about your life , you could hate your job , or generally feel like you are wasting your time .

But, worse, you might not even know why or how to fix it. If you have no ambition in life, you won’t know what things to look out for that will help your life or give you direction. And then you run the risk of being stuck in a rut or generally feeling down about life.

Sir John Denham quote on why you need an ambition in life - “Ambition
is like love,
impatient both
of delays
and rivals.”

How to get an ambition in life

We are not designed to go through this life without meaning, just doing whatever falls in front of us without a reason. That is a potential path to a limited life that could lead to regrets and feelings of disappointment. Frankly, it’s risky to go through life without any ambitions. You risk getting to the end of your life wishing you did more with your life. You risk massive regrets in life if you don’t have ambitions.

I believe we are put on this planet to live life to the full, to achieve our greatest ambitions, and help others to achieve great things in their lives.

That is certainly one of my ambitions in life. I want to be a film director, writer and actor, and I want to help other people go after and achieve their dreams.

I have been fortunate to work out what my ambition in life is, but many people don’t know what their ambition in life is. If that is you, do not worry, because you certainly can find out what your aim in life is .

And you don’t need only one. As I said above, I have a few ambitions in life, although, in some way, they are all wrapped up together as a group. But it is totally okay to have multiple ambitions, as many people do.

Try not to get too stressed about this right now. You can start the process, keep working on it, and figure out your ambition in life over a matter of time. And your ambitions can change, too!

Napoleon Bonaparte on ambition in life - “Great ambition
is the passion
of a great
character.”

What do you find insanely interesting or fun?

A great question to ask when figuring out what your ambition might be is to ask yourself what you enjoy most in life. What do you find insanely fun or interesting? What do you like to spend your time reading about, researching, or watching videos about?

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you look forward to doing the most? What are some things you like doing, where, if you don’t do them, you feel a sense of loss?

What do you get obsessed over? What do you enjoy talking about?

Is there anything in your life that you can’t stop thinking about? Is there anything that people around you say you are obsessed about? What do you find yourself talking about to people the most? Is there anything you WANT to spend your time being obsessed over?

What would you choose to do with your time if you didn’t have to worry about money or anything else?

If you had no worries in life, like paying rent, working a job, health concerns, limitations of geography, etc, what would you do? Would you be a musician? Would you travel the world? Would you volunteer in a third world country?

If you can cut your fears about the world out then this will seriously help you to come up with answers. Fear is a massive roadblock to having clear thoughts, and that is why it is important to be able to ask yourself what you would do if you had no fears in life. Generally, this is one of the most reliable ways to figure out what your ambition in life is.

Yoshida Kenko quote on my ambition in life - “Ambition
never
comes
to an end.”

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

As above, this is another question to ask yourself which involves stepping around the fears that naturally come up. Sometimes we know deep down what our ambitions in life are, but fear of failure gets in the way. This fear of failure can stop you from fully connecting with your ambition or from starting on working towards it. It can even make you believe that you don’t really want that thing after all! But this is just fear talking.

Interestingly, this fear can also be really useful in answering what your ambition in life is, because often the thing we fear the most tells us what is most important to us. Think about it – if you fear that you will fail at something, the thing you fear failing at probably means an awful lot to you.

So what do you really want to do but get scared over? What do you want to be really good at? What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? If you knew would succeed, if you had total confidence, what would you do?

This is a very reliable way to figure out your ambition(s) in life.

If you still don’t know how to answer “my ambition is…”

These questions will help you to figure out what your ambition in life might be. But if you still don’t have an idea of your aim in life after writing these down, then the best thing you can do is go and get more life experiences.

Get out in the world and try new things. If you think you might like to work in a certain field, for example, go get some work experience in that field. If you think you might want to help endangered animals, go try working with animals. If you think you might want to make a movie, go and make a low-budget film.

And if you still don’t have any ideas, try meditating on it, or try getting away on a personal break away from the world, technology and distractions, to, as people say, “discover yourself”.

Salvador Dali quote on my ambition in life - “Intelligence
without
ambition is
a bird
without wings.”

Essay on My Ambition

Every person, irrespective of age, has a dream or a wish to achieve something special in life. Even when I was very young, my relatives would ask about my ambition. While I did not know what it meant, now I understand what they meant. Ambition is all about considering what I want to become in life. It helps us to form a particular aim in my life. It also refers to concentrating on a specific goal.

My Ambition

The ambition in anybody's life would depend on the interests and choices of the person. My ambition is to become a fitness guide in the future. Though my parents feel that it is quite an unusual choice for me, they are very encouraging about it. My parents are well aware of my interest in outdoor sports, as well as in yoga and Karate. They have always supported me to follow my passion.

Accordingly, they have enrolled me in yoga, swimming and Karate classes. I also play badminton regularly with my father. They have promised to help me in every way that they can provide. I never ignore my studies. Becoming a fitness expert might not be a very sought after choice, but my parents are happy with the choice nevertheless.

Why This Ambition?

From a very tender age, I have seen my grandparents very enthusiastic about morning walks and yoga. My mother would visit the gym and meditation classes regularly. And she was also very careful about what we eat. This is how I developed a liking for physical fitness. Now, I have become very passionate about different types of exercises. Also, I love communicating with people. It makes me feel great when I meet new people, talk to them and help them in any possible way. As a fitness guide, I may get the opportunity to meet new people, understand their problems and make them look and feel better with the right exercises. Moreover, if they have a healthy and fit body, then they would feel more confident than ever.

Also, I don't like to stick to a regular desk job. I feel that as a fitness expert, every working day is going to be different. I will have people of all age groups and from different walks of life coming to me. Each of them would have unique fitness needs. Every day, I will have a new challenge and something new to the plan.

What I Want To Do

As a fitness trainer, it would be my priority to instruct and give support to those who come to me. Depending on their physical condition and their needs, I would suggest and create workout plans. I will have to earn expertise in different forms of work out. I will use my knowledge and experience to create customized exercise plans. I can lead group classes, provide one to one sessions or combine both. Also, to keep me upgraded, I will keep on learning new exercise techniques.

Where to Work?

A fitness instructor can either be a freelancer or have his or her fitness studio. Several professionals also work in boutique hotels, as well as in gyms, hospitals, schools and similar places. Even in keeping with the trend of working from home after COVID 19 scenario, I have seen that some professionals are offering online classes as well.

Before that, I will have to get a degree or diploma in fitness courses. It is also essential to develop my communication skills. For that, I may have to join special grooming classes. Also, I will need to research the latest developments and trends in fitness training. This will help me to perform even better.

Different types of fitness classes, such as aerobics, HIIT, Pilates, yoga, dance, cycling and the like are becoming more popular than ever. This is gradually increasing the job opportunity for fitness experts. Also, the modern lifestyle has become very sedentary. There is minimal scope for outdoor activities and rigorous physical exercise. So even some young people are suffering from severe conditions like diabetes, obesity and hypertension. So almost everyone, at one time or another, looks for a trainer for help.

Fitness is no more a bodybuilding game. It is all about following good postures, eating right and staying confident. This is where I might help.

FAQs on My Ambition Essay

1. What is the importance of ambition in life?

Ambition is a powerful motivator for human development. Without a healthy dose of ambition, no one can prosper. Those that aspire to be more, learn more, accomplish more, give more, or have more have a strong internal drive that propels them to dream greater and go further. They are motivated by an ambition to advance and achieve their objectives. Ambition shows healthy self-esteem and a higher power of abstraction and imagery of the future when it is well-directed and supported by values. As they get closer to their goals, ambitious folks have a glitter in their eyes. They have a higher vibration and a contagious passion for completing tasks. They motivate and inspire others.

It is important to remember that ambition does not imply a lack of morals or principles. It is not about a lack of control or being manipulative, as many people in Western civilisation believe. Ambition isn't valued here. We are afraid of it and distrust it. We are prone to conflating it with unbridled ambition. It is as if every ambitious person was born with the ability and willingness to cause harm to others. Of course, there are others with unrestrained ambition—the evil guy in the story stereotyped—who are capable of doing everything and running over anyone to accomplish what they want. However, persons with a healthy and positive amount of ambition are not inherently disqualified from succeeding and doing good at the same time.

2. What are the disadvantages of being excessively ambitious?

This is a positive attribute in general, especially for people who are seeking to start their own business. Obviously, if you are more naturally motivated to establish and achieve goals, you will have a better chance of succeeding than someone who is not, right?

This is not always the case, though. Extreme ambition may, in fact, cause more harm than good in some circumstances. If you believe you are a person who is very ambitious, you should be aware of the following potentially dangerous side effects.

Fixation on the End Result: The tendency to focus too narrowly on one vision or ultimate goal is the first major adverse consequence of excessive ambition. For example, if your objective is to make $1 million by the age of 30, everything that doesn't appear to push you closer to that goal may seem pointless.

For two reasons, this is an issue. For starters, it limits your ability to adjust to new situations. If a new rival appears to be posing a danger to your organisation, you may need to adapt your strategy and goals, even if it means departing from your initial vision. This will be difficult if you have too much ambition.

Unfettered Growth: Excessive ambition can also lead to an overabundance of desire to advance. And, as you are probably aware, uncontrolled, excessively rapid expansion can lead to a company's demise. When you develop too quickly, you wind up squandering money; you invest in people, equipment, and resources before you need them; and your internal structures become so disorganised that keeping up is practically impossible.

Becoming Selfish: Being ambitious tends to make you more selfish, leading you to pursue personal ambitions at the expense of your family, friends, and community.

You might, for example, work late into the night instead of spending meaningful time with your spouse and child, or you might ignore your employees' demands and mental health in order to eke out a little more output. While this may help you make some short-term gains, relationships and community connections are greater predictors of success in the long run: These bonds are mutually beneficial, and they are considerably more vital to your mental health than ambition, which is the subject of my next section.

3. How to choose a career?

To choose your career, remember the following points:

Determine your Abilities and Passions: Choosing a career path is a significant decision. You will spend a large portion of your life at work, so make good career choices if you want to enjoy your job, stay motivated, and reach your full potential.

To begin, you must first understand yourself. This entails examining your abilities as well as your interests and values.

Consider your Options for a Career: Consider what your dream work sector would be, then examine the local, national, and worldwide employment markets to learn about its important trends. This will assist you in identifying other alternative career options as well as determining whether roles are expanding or dropping.

Make a Decision: You are now ready to start making choices. Combine what you have learned about yourself and your options with what you've learned about the graduate employment market.

Choose the role that most interests you from your list of work possibilities and one or two backup options in case you are unable to pursue your initial pick.

4. How to relax in life?

Breathe it out: One of the most basic relaxation techniques, breathing exercises can successfully soothe your stressed-out body and mind at any moment. Spot one hand on your belly and sit or lie down in a calm and safe place in your house, such as your bed or the floor. Inhale slowly to a count of three, then exhale slowly to the same count of three. As you breathe in and out, notice how your tummy rises and falls. Repeat five times, or as many times as necessary to feel at ease.

5. How to fight laziness?

Burnout can be caused by setting unreasonable objectives and taking on too much. Burnout symptoms are recognised by medical specialists, despite the fact that it is not a clinical diagnosis. Burnout at work can lead to exhaustion, a lack of interest and ambition, and a desire to leave. Set realistic and manageable goals that will get you where you want to go without overwhelming you along the way to avoid overloading.

Negative self-talk can sabotage your efforts to accomplish goals in many areas of your life. Negative self-talk includes telling yourself that you are a slacker. Go to the Vedantu app and website for free study materials.

6. What is the difference between aim and ambition in life?

Having an aim in life is as essential as having an ambition. Aim refers to a specific goal that a particular person might want to reach. However, ambition means a very strong wish to achieve what one aims in life. It is out of ambition that we can set realistic targets, plan and work to get the results. Serious ambition can keep people motivated and well-directed.

7. Why is ambition important?

With ambition, there is a strong desire to achieve something positive. It gives all the motivation to chase dreams. This, in turn, helps our mind to look for new scopes and opportunities, as well as find new strategies to reach our goals.

8. How to find your ambition?

Not every idea that comes to mind is an ambition. To find your true ambition, you need to take some time. Think about what you like to do in life. Also, think if you have any idea to use your favourite activity to do something fruitful. Also, consider the activities that you think are giving a lot of effort. These steps will help you to find your true ambition.

Likewise, if we also don’t have an aim in our life, we won’t know where to reach. I always wanted to be a professor and now my family is inspiring me to become a professor too. My parents are really supportive and they respect my decision. My favourite subject is English . My teachers are really helpful and they help me a lot to understand everything on this particular subject. They also guide me a lot about future decisions.

Ms. Divya is my English professor and she knows about my future plans. She always inspires me to do better and work harder. The reason behind My Future Plan: I have a few specific reasons for my future plan. I was once explaining some doubts of my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. I am pretty much confident about that and I know I will work hard to pursue my dream. Everyone should have a reasonable aim in their life that will help them to reach success.

The aim in life is really important because an aimless person is like a rudderless ship in the sea and does not know the direction of their destination. Likewise, if we also don’t have an aim in our life, we won’t know where to reach. Thus to achieve it one has to overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time. I always wanted to be a professor and now my family is inspiring me to become a professor too. My parents are really supportive and they respect my decision. I have seen lots of my friends want to become a professor, and some of them want to pursue an MBA . There are a lot of aims and goals available that students can choose in their lives. Right now in this world, the top trending professions are Doctor, Teacher, Programmer, Designer, Architect, Marketer, Supervisor, Manager, Engineer, etc. Maybe you have something unique in you and you want to pursue that. So different people adopt different aims according to their inclinations, tastes or perceptions about life. My teachers are really helpful and are always guiding and helping me with my future plans.

They have always inspired me to do better and work harder. I was once explaining some doubts to my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. Later, I experienced teaching while doing an internship with an NGO. I went to a slum and taught kids there. I felt a different kind of satisfaction after teaching them. At that time I realized that I had never felt happier than this and decided to become a professor. I am one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines, and working as a professor offers many chances for me to develop those interests. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. Then I am planning to take the UGC NET exam . Another big plus is the working hours that academia can offer, which are frequently more flexible than in other professions.

The biggest advantage of being a professor is that I find jobs in many places worldwide. I am really honest and passionate about my aim in life. It is surely a long journey but I will try my best to reach my goal and I suggest everyone do the same. According to me, timely execution of an action plan with a proactive attitude is the key to success. One of the best ways to stay motivated is by visualizing the change and likewise by achieving step-by-step milestones.

My aim in life is to grow to be a doctor in the future. I believe that medicine is one of the noblest professions to pursue in the world. I belong to a family of doctors and just like my mother, I aspire to be a neurosurgeon. The study of neurology and its impact on our behaviour, personality, and character is what intrigues me the most about the field. My curiosity towards the medical world and ambition to be a doctor is what motivates me to study harder and more diligently. The study of medicine is not easy but it opens up a whole new world of interaction. Learning about basic cell function to discovering the mechanisms of our brain is a fascinating journey. As a school student, I wish to excel in certain subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, maths, and psychology so that I can pursue my dream of becoming a doctor and a neurosurgeon. I hope to participate in different charities, health clinics, and services to gain the relevant skills one needs to be a doctor. I wish to work upon my social and communication skills because good communication is the backbone of every industry. I have the confidence and hope that one day I will achieve my aim in life to become a doctor.

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instil a love of learning.” Teachers are the foundation of a good society, they not only facilitate learning but also inspire children to follow their dreams and goals in life. This is why my aim in life is to become a teacher. My teachers have had a tremendous impact on my life, they taught me to believe in myself and follow my path no matter what. I wish to inculcate this belief and nurture it. Becoming a teacher can help me spread this knowledge and belief of believing in one’s ability to achieve their goals, to be individualistic and creative. I believe that I can be a good teacher because of my experience, humility, and caring nature. I possess all the skills and qualities that a promising teacher should possess. I hope one day I get the opportunity to follow my passion for teaching and educating the world in the future.

My aim in life is to become an engineer. Belonging to a family of engineers I have aspired to become a mechanical engineer like my father. Efforts anyone puts in becoming an engineer will be the best investment ever. I will face many challenges at work but it will open an array of opportunities for me around the world. My curiosity towards the engineering world and ambition to be an engineer is what drives me to study harder and more diligently. I have started to prepare myself for this journey from the school level. Engineering is all about creating new products and bringing up changes in the existing ones for better functioning. I have started participating in various Olympiads, competitions to level up my knowledge and turn my passion into a career. I hope one day I get the opportunity to follow my passion for engineering and bring a change in the future.

How to Write an Awesome Essay About Your Career Goals

  • Before you begin, ask yourself a few key questions like:
  • What are my short-term and long-term career goals?
  • Where do I see myself in ten years?
  • What events in my life have led me to have these goals?
  • What major will help me reach my goals?
  • What skills do I need to reach my goals?
  • What impact do I want to have on society?

Career Goals Essay Template

Need more inspiration.

After you brainstorm the responses to these questions, look for common themes, or pick out the most interesting stories. You can build your main essay “thesis” or idea around this.

Once you’ve got the main idea, create an outline to put your ideas into essay format. This will give you a general idea of structure.

You can use the career essays template below to give you some ideas. But remember that some rules are meant to be broken, so don’t be afraid to be innovative and think outside the box!

Also, when you’re done, head over to Going Merry to apply for the Career Goals scholarship essay bundle (one essay, one application, multiple scholarships!). You might as well make that essay count. Sign up for Going Merry to apply for scholarships more efficiently.

career goals essay

Here’s a paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown:

Paragraph 1 : Establish the main theme of what you’re going to talk about. It should also grab the reader’s attention. For example, instead of starting your essay with something generic (e.g. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a zoologist), get creative with it! Try something like My greatest memory as a young girl was going to the zoo for the first time or While most kids play house or school, I always wanted to play zookeeper.

Paragraph 2 : Elaborate on what inspired your career goals. Perhaps it was a relative, a TV show, or simply an experience that you had. Remember that old writing adage, “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, try to demonstrate your interest with story or description.

Paragraph 3 : Discuss your short-term career goals and your intended major. How will your intended major help you reach these goals? What skills do you need to learn to reach them? At the end of the paragraph, try discussing how your short-term goals can help you achieve your long-term goals.

Paragraph 4 : Focus on your long-term goals and the impact that you hope to have on society. If you’re not sure what your long-term goals are, don’t sweat it; they’ll probably change anyways. You can instead focus on the difference you’d like to make overall. And don’t worry too much about the size of the impact…remember that just doing what you’re truly passionate about has a massive impact on those around you.

The last paragraph is your conclusion. You can use this paragraph to summarize what you discussed in the previous few paragraphs. If you want to be even more creative, try ending your essay with a question for your readers or a new insight. Good luck!

And now that you’re ready with that essay, put it to good use! You can recycle that same essay, when applying for the Career Goals Scholarship Bundle. Ambition is the driving force that propels us to pursue our dreams, set goals, and work towards achieving them. It is the fire within us that pushes us to reach for the stars and make a meaningful impact on the world. In this essay, I will discuss my ambition in life, the goals I aspire to achieve, and why having ambition is essential for personal growth and societal progress. Why is ambition important?

6 examples of ambition in life, 6 examples of ambition at work, 8 habits you can put into practice, be ambitious about increasing your ambition.

Challenging goals can feel scary, encouraging you to leave your comfort zone and push your boundaries.

But when your goals aren’t lofty enough, you might feel stagnant and unfulfilled, making it better to set ambitious objectives that offer more growth and satisfaction.

Ambition is the desire and motivation to continuously achieve increasingly difficult goals. It’s the spark inside you that compels you to try your best at everything you do.

Examples of ambition look different for each person, as everyone’s marker for “daunting yet fulfilling” is unique. But no matter the ambition examples you resonate with, these goals will help you live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Ambition is important because it drives you to set impressive goals and do everything in your power to achieve them. This motivational force helps you face new challenges head-on and continuously develop a growth mindset . And this forward momentum makes you feel like you’re pursuing your purpose and working toward a more meaningful life.

Your sense of ambition might wax and wane depending on where you’re at in your life — it can even change daily if you’re feeling extra tired or burned out. But you’ll always have desires you want to work toward, and any time you take on this work, you’re activating your own ambition.

That said, it’s reasonably frustrating when your ambition is low and you can’t find the energy to accomplish your goals. These dreams are essential to feeling like you’re becoming the best version of yourself. And when your ambition in life becomes the barrier to achieving your goals, it’s normal to feel discouraged or overwhelmed.

If you’re feeling unmotivated, you can bolster your ambitious spirit by practicing the following seven characteristics found in highly ambitious people :

  • Continuously planning and setting specific goals to promote focus
  • Staying motivated to achieve goals that help you self-actualize
  • Only feeling satisfied when you reach your ambitious goals
  • Competitively working alongside others, but for the sake of career growth and success
  • Willingly making changes in your life to better pursue your goals and purpose
  • Taking risks while maintaining critical thinking and emotional regulation
  • Remaining flexible and open-minded to strategically solve problems

In life, you display your ambition in subtle and not-so-subtle ways to those around you, whether it’s by taking proactive steps in improving your mental health by seeking a mental health professional or making strides in your professional development by starting a small business. It also subtly impacts your mindset, causing you to strive to do better, sustain your efforts, and think of the future but still be present.

Here are six flexible ambition examples you can use as a template when finding ways to let your ambition shine:

  • Wanting to be great at something: To ambitiously approach a hobby or new skill, you’ll want to be great at it — not OK or decent, but great. Spending hours practicing will help elevate you from amateur to expert.
  • Being passionate: Life’s too short to live without pursuing your passions , whether that’s seeking an American English literature degree or performing in plays like Macbeth. Ambitious people work toward their goals in a passionate and purposeful way.
  • Being persistent: Ambitious people don’t easily give up when pursuing their goals, often doing whatever it takes to succeed. This might mean upskilling , revising a plan to make it attainable, and asking for help .
  • Making a difference: Helping others is among the most persuasive and inspiring social motivators around. Working toward altruism-based goals gives your life more meaning and fulfillment, whether that’s helping a colleague with their communication skills or a friend practice their Spanish.
  • Having a vision: You can only work toward achieving something if you truly understand what it is and how to get there, and visualization techniques assist this process. Methods like defining your company’s vision or journaling about your desires help you build a more meaningful trajectory.
  • Exuding self-motivation: Ambitious people don’t require as much external motivation, instead holding themselves accountable and taking action. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help. It just means you don’t need it as often and understand your own motivators enough to leverage them when you’re in a rut.

man-thinking-at-coffee-shop-examples-of-ambition

Ambition is a desirable skill at work because it symbolizes your self-motivation skills, work ethic, and accountability. And it often means you’ve accomplished some pretty impressive career goals, making your resume stand out to human resources professionals.

Workplace ambition typically falls into one of three categories: performance, growth, or achievement . But what’s key is finding a balance between all three because well-rounded career ambitions ensure you’re creating the right work-life balance while feeling professionally satisfied.

With that in mind, here are six examples of workplace ambition:

  • Creating a career plan: If you’re ambitious, you’ll likely create a career plan or professional development plan that considers both short-term and long-term goals. This helps you prepare to meet every objective.
  • Listening to feedback: You’re bound to make mistakes — everyone is. But viewing errors as learning opportunities showcases your self-improvement mindset because the more you learn from each shortfall, the better you can perform in the future. So seize every opportunity to receive feedback and note how you might improve your skills to achieve workplace goals.
  • Wanting to be an expert: While you can never truly know everything about a topic, the wish to become a subject matter expert showcases your willingness to learn . You understand that expertise takes time, grit , and determination — and you’re ready to put the effort in to get there (or at least close).
  • Owning your own business: Very ambitious people will likely get to the point where being their own boss is their dream job — especially if this is the only rung left on the career development ladder. And if you’re ambitious, you’re uniquely qualified to succeed since you won’t give up and are prepared to learn from your mistakes.
  • Striving to be a mentor: Someone likely mentored you when you entered the industry, and maybe you’d like to return the favor. Mentors guide others on their career paths by teaching them new skills and offering career advice. In this position, all your growth and achievements help you give back to others and feel fulfilled.
  • Being humble: As some of these other examples showcase, pursuing challenging and daunting goals requires humility and vulnerability . You must recognize how little you know and how much work is ahead of you to gain the right skills and strategically complete tasks. And learning from your mistakes and asking for feedback both require you to be vulnerable, truly accepting that you’re not perfect and embracing every way you can improve.

group-of-colleagues-talking-examples-of-ambition

You’re showing your ambitious side by learning everything you can about the topic, but now it’s time to put your knowledge to the test.

Ambitious people have certain habits that help them stand out compared to people who aren’t as ambitious. You might not notice it right away, but it’s in the details. Small things contribute to how ambitious you are and your mindset toward achieving personal ambitions and career aspirations.

If you need some healthy habits to support the goals you’re chasing, try these out.

1. Find a social group with similar goals

Do your friends shrug off goal-setting , or do they share your enthusiasm for growth and hard work? Your social health impacts your attitude, so be mindful of who you hang out with. Surround yourself with like-minded people who share your focus . This might mean making new friends as an adult to find the right mix of people who motivate and inspire you.

2. Be punctual

Organize your schedule and manage your time to ensure you’re not late or keeping others waiting. Things like job interviews and coffee with mentors demand that you’re on time and prepared. But your loved ones deserve the same level of respect — even for casual things. Punctuality means you’re intentional with your time.

3. Learn from your mistakes

Chances are slim that you’ll achieve lofty goals hiccup-free, but every mistake is a chance to grow and do a better job in the future. Embrace failures , taking a moment to meditate on them or journal to discover what you could do better next time.

man-sitted-at-his-desk-examples-of-ambition

4. Hold yourself accountable

Owning your failures also means accepting responsibility for your actions — both good and bad. Make sure you celebrate your wins and are proud of yourself, but know when to admit that you’ve done something wrong. You might want to find an accountability partner to keep you in line while you build better habits.

5. Set SMART goals

You’re only as successful as the goals you set, so make them specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound . Not everyone can become an astronaut or Olympic athlete. You need to balance your well-being and available resources with the right amount of challenge so you feel motivated by and capable of achieving your goals.

6. Leverage your motivators

The best thing you can do to increase your ambition is to understand what motivates you. There’s no right or wrong motivating factor — financial security , work-life balance, and deeper connections are all valid. Take the time to assess what yours are so you can create goals you actually want to achieve.

7. Follow your inspiration

Ambition often starts with inspiration. Feeling inspired by someone else’s accomplishments is a great way to discover what you want to achieve. Here are a few suggestions for finding inspiration:

  • Create a vision board , adding quotes and pictures of careers, hobbies, and people that inspire you
  • Meditate on the coworkers and loved ones you’re most inspired by
  • Write a list of 10 people in your professional life that you admire and why
  • Work with a career coach to determine what your goals are and how you might find industry-specific inspiration

8. Follow your jealousy

Jealousy isn’t inherently bad. Often, it signals the things you wish you had, like a graduate degree or promotion. Notice these feelings of envy and consider whether you’d like to add these accomplishments to your list of “to-do” objectives. You might go through the same four steps offered in the previous section to determine who you envy and why.

woman-interviewed-by-manager-examples-of-ambition

By reading this article on ambition examples, you’ve already expressed your go-getter nature. You’re willing to learn and ready to take on challenging goals — and that’s impressive. Now, ride this momentum to create an action plan that increases your ambition.

That might include habits you can practice to feel more passionate and motivated as well as strategic goal-setting that includes scarier objectives. Taking on this work offers you an unmatched sense of purpose — enjoy it.

With enough grit and determination, you’ll find that this is the driving force you need to live a purposeful and happy life for years to come.

Goal and Motive: What Is the Difference?

If you confuse your goal with your motive, your life choices may be too rigid..

  • What Is Motivation?

  • Goals are easy to change, whereas motives are not.
  • A motive is an urge to achieve an inner state that makes one feel balanced or satisfied.
  • A goal is a representation of a desired final state, which may or may not satisfy one or more motives.
  • Periodically assess whether your current goals are the best way to satisfy your motives.

Will the object or position you fancy actually make you happier? Wasted effort and disappointment can happen when we confuse goals with motives and means with ends. This happens more often than it seems. To choose the best means to your ends, you need to know the psychological difference between goal and motive.

Smart creatures have goals

All animals react to the situation here and now. Some are smarter; they can also imagine objects and situations beyond the here and now: They are able to have mental representations. Great apes do, and it's likely dogs do too. In any case, humans do.

Representations allow us to imagine, to picture, a desired state and its consequences. For example, a state that would better satisfy our motives. When hungry, you can imagine eating a sandwich and then different ways of getting that sandwich. Interestingly, being able to imagine different alternatives (e.g., making a sandwich, ordering one, stealing one) creates the possibility of a decision, a choice of the best way to get to the final imagined state (here, eating the sandwich) and possible consequences (no longer being hungry). This is the story of our lives: deciding what we want and why, and trying to get there. We act with purpose. A good life, it seems, has a lot to do with making good choices. But what is the psychology behind our "choices"?

Goals are easy to change, whereas motives are not

To understand, we need to clarify the difference between motive and goal. This difference is key because goals are easy to change, whereas motives are not. Take "hunger." This motive can be satisfied by various means (e.g., a sandwich, noodle soup, etc.). You can change the means (the type of food), and that is fine, but you cannot suppress the motive unless you satisfy it. Reasoning cannot stop hunger.

Feeling hungry, like feeling ambitious, is feeling a lack of something and a desire to fill this lack by acting; it is not "rational." A motive is an urge to achieve an inner state which makes one feel balanced or satisfied. Hunger is a motive. So are professional ambition and sociability. Not satisfying such urges may lead to frustration and stress . Satisfying the motive ends the urge: If you are hungry and someone gives you your favourite food right away, you will forget about getting that sandwich. There are many ways to satisfy a motive.

The motive, like any feeling, is vague and difficult to describe. The goal, on the other hand, is clear. It is a conscious representation of what could fulfil the motive. For example, for hunger, a meal; for ambition, a position; for loneliness , a companion. A goal is a conscious representation of a desired final state of things . It directs our activity in the hope that reaching it will satisfy our motive. This is why humans are called "goal-directed" creatures. A single goal can sometimes satisfy several motives: "Getting home for dinner" could simultaneously satisfy the motives of hunger, sociability, and safety. That is good because we have many motives, some more salient than others at a given moment.

A goal is not an end—it's only a means to satisfaction

To achieve the goal, people will imagine a course of action, a "trajectory" of activity that will take them from the current state to the desired final state, the goal. This trajectory will take them through steps (subgoals) that gradually bring them closer to the goal. For example, to get a meal, a possible trajectory is: Get food, cook, serve, and finally eat.

Some behavioural trajectories may be short, such as going out for lunch. Some trajectories may take years, such as gaining access to a prominent social position that satisfies multiple motives (livelihood, recognition, security, power). In societies, and even more so in large societies, the steps in the trajectory that one must take to reach the goal can be complicated and may appear as detours. These "detours" are other activities that have no obvious or immediate connection with the final goal. For example, to reach a high social position, one may have to go through education , hard work, and all the rest.

Activity theory is the field of psychology that studies activity in detail. Let us summarise its relevant aspects for our problem here:

A behavioural trajectory is like a journey on a land with many roads, where at each intersection we choose a particular path (e.g., sandwich or soup?). On this journey, we are driven by motives—urges over which we have limited control—and are directed towards goals (the endpoint the trajectory is aiming for). Goals are easier to change as long as they satisfy the motives. In a nutshell: "Activity is driven by motives and directed towards goals."

Saadi Lahlou

In this figure, discs represent the situations met at the various steps of the trajectory. The dotted line shows the motive moving the activity forward.

The difference between goal and motive is key because, if you want to change behaviour, it is relatively easy to change goals, but it is difficult to suppress a motive. Consider thermal comfort: You can change the goal (wear a jumper vs. turn the heat on), but you cannot suppress the need for body heat—unless you satisfy it.

Review your goals on a regular basis

Why is this important for the good life? Confusing goal with motive can make you rigid and goal-dependant. Wise people are aware of their motives; they change their goals when they realise that another goal would satisfy their motives better or more easily. What was a good goal a while ago may become a bad choice when the situation changes. Surely, consistency is good because it is necessary to achieve a goal. Nevertheless, being too rigid about goals can be detrimental: A goal is only a means to an end. Do not confuse the how with the why.

Regularly reassessing your decisions and strategies, alone or with people you trust, can be enlightening: What are my motives? Are my current goals the best way to satisfy them? The answer will depend on many things, but the questions are worth asking on a regular basis, especially when it turns out that reaching your current goal is problematic.

Want to know more? Activity theory is more detailed in my latest book.

Volvo becomes latest carmaker to scale back electric ambitions, eases goal to at least 90% by 2030.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Sweden-based Volvo Cars has eased off on its pledge to stop selling cars with internal combustion motors by 2030, saying slow rollout of places to charge up and withdrawal of purchase incentives will leave room for a few cars that still need fossil fuels.

Volvo Cars, part of China's Geely Holding, now foresees a model lineup at the end of the decade that's at least 90% electric cars and has widened that to include both battery-only and plug-in hybrids that combine battery power with an internal combustion engine.

On top of that, up to 10% could be a “limited number” of mild hybrids, which mainly run on internal combustion and store electric power from braking in a 48-volt battery to assist acceleration and improve fuel economy.

The company said it was adjusting to “changing market conditions and customer demands.”

“We are resolute in our belief that our future is electric,” CEO Jim Rowan said in a statement Wednesday. “However, it is clear that the transition to electrification will not be linear, and customers and markets are moving at different speeds of adoption.”

The push into electric cars is driven by European limits on emissions that end sales of internal combustion cars by 2035, with a possible exception for those running on carbon-neutral fuels. The regulatory push is part of efforts to meet goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the 2015 Paris accords aimed at combating climate change.

But the uptake of electric cars has hit headwinds. Germany suddenly dropped purchase subsidies at the start of this year, and construction of places to charge away from home have lagged. That pushes consumers toward internal combustion or hybrids that can make it home on the fuel-powered motor in case the battery gets low.

In July 2024, registrations of battery only cars in Europe declined by 10.8% to 102,705 units, with their total market share slipping to 12.1% from 13.5% a year before, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Volvo also cited “uncertainties” around recent new tariffs on electric vehicles made in China. The U.S. has imposed a new 100% tariff that blocks most Chinese cars, while the European Union has added tariffs of 17.4% to 37.6% though it is not collecting them as it seeks a trade unerstanding with China. Higher tariffs could mean higher prices as cheaper Chinese EVs are kept off consumer markets.

Volvo is the latest carmaker to scale back electric ambitions. Mercedes-Benz said its goal of 50% of its cars having electric motors by 2025 would slip to 2030, while Ford Motor Co. has delayed or dropped electric models and cut back on investments in electric production and technology.

Inside the bitter personal battle between top FBI and DOJ officials over Mar-a-Lago

This article is adapted from the book “ Where Tyranny Begins: The Justice Department, the FBI, and the War on Democracy , ” by NBC News’ national security editor.

On Aug. 1, 2022, senior Justice Department and FBI officials gathered on the seventh floor of the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., for a historic meeting.

They exchanged pleasantries, shook hands, and took seats in Room 7427, the FBI general counsel’s conference room, a nondescript gathering place with a long rectangular table surrounded by no-frills office chairs. Each official wore a suit, mandatory attire on the storied floor that houses the office of the FBI director and his top advisers.

The senior DOJ officials had left their headquarters, an elegant mix of Classical and Art Deco architecture, and met their bureau colleagues across Pennsylvania Avenue in the FBI headquarters, a Brutalist structure considered one of the ugliest buildings in Washington. Their goal was to have what one participant later called a “come to Jesus” meeting.

For months, prosecutors from the DOJ’s national security division and the leaders of the FBI’s Washington field office had disagreed over an ongoing criminal probe. Tension and debate between prosecutors and agents during an investigation are routine, and often welcomed.

But this case had taken on an extraordinary level of intensity, pressure, and acrimony due to the potential defendant: former President Donald Trump.

Career officials from the FBI Washington field office eventually took an unusual step. They privately questioned a career DOJ prosecutor's political donations to Democrats and what they saw as his aggressive stance toward Trump.

In both the FBI and DOJ, career officials, unlike political appointees, are expected to act in a strictly non-partisan manner. But the hyperpatisanship of contemporary American politics had seeped into the Mar-a-Lago investigation and threatened to slow it.

The stakes were high for all of those in the room — potentially career-ending — and for the country. The DOJ and FBI officials were deadlocked over how to retrieve what were believed to be dozens of top-secret documents that Trump had taken from the White House to Mar-a-Lago and declined to return.

No good options

The DOJ and FBI officials shared the same feeling about the case: dread. After the National Archives repeatedly requested that Trump return the documents, some officials assumed Trump would simply hand over the materials. When he didn’t, all of them saw no good options.

“You know what the reaction was in the department?” recalled a former FBI official involved in the case who asked not to be named. “We were like, ‘Oh shit, we don’t want any part of this. The real enemies are Russia and China.’”

Steven D’Antuono, then the head of the bureau’s Washington field office and who has since retired, feared that the documents dispute would further erode public faith in the FBI.

“I was worried about it increasing distrust in us,” D’Antuono told NBC News in his first on-the-record media interview about the Mar-a-Lago dispute, which was first reported by   The Washington Post .

Inside the FBI, bipartisan criticism of its Hillary Clinton email investigation, Trump’s firing of James Comey, and special counsel John Durham’s probe of the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation had taken a toll.

“We all thought this posed a risk to us both professionally and personally,” the former senior FBI official said. “I can’t impress upon you the pressure.”

He added, “We’re trying to make the best decisions we can with all the emotions swirling.”

The intense pressure also fueled distrust. Several FBI agents in the Washington field office were concerned about the aggressive tactics and political donations of Jay Bratt, one of the Justice Department prosecutors.

According to public records , Bratt, who now works for special counsel Jack Smith, had donated $600 to a former DOJ colleague’s unsuccessful Democratic primary campaign for the U.S. Senate in Oregon in 2007, $150 to the Oregon Senate Democratic Campaign Committee that same year, and a total of $500 to the Democratic National Committee in 1993 and 1994.

Bratt, through the Justice Department press office, declined an interview request. DOJ officials flatly dismissed any claim that Bratt was biased against the former president.

They said that Bratt pursued all cases aggressively, noting that he had a long history of investigating the handling of classified documents by Democrats, including Hillary Clinton. In the Trump case, they added, Bratt had tried for months to seek a resolution with the former president that would not involve a search of Mar-a-Lago.

A senior DOJ official with knowledge of Bratt’s work said in an interview that he had never seen him show political bias. “It would be hard for me to overstate how much I disagree with that characterization,” said the official, who asked not to be named. “He is one of the finest career prosecutors I’ve worked with. I’ve never seen a hint of bias.”

D’Antuono, though, was concerned about the approach of the DOJ team investigating Trump, which Bratt led. “Jay was being a little overly aggressive,” D’Antuono recalled. “The aggressiveness that was there, from day one.”

D’Antuono said that Bratt’s behavior may have been fueled by the extraordinarily high-profile nature of the case. “This is a huge case. It’s the former president,” D’Antuono said. “Was some of it due to ambition? Jay has been an attorney for a long time. This is the case of the century.”

In a less divisive era in American politics, personal political donations might have drawn less attention. It was generally accepted that career DOJ and FBI officials could put their personal politics aside and investigate any elected official, Republican or Democrat, in a fair and fact-based manner.

But 50 years after Watergate, American politics, culture, and news coverage had changed. Partisanship had steadily risen and been rewarded in Washington. Some politicians had grown tired of the independence of the DOJ and suspicious of career public servants. And the internet had created a powerful new way for politicians to circumvent the press and express their own unfiltered views directly to the public.

Trump had deftly taken advantage of all of these dynamics and been elected to the country’s highest office. In the Trump era, bias was assumed, encouraged, and expected by many. Nonpartisan public service was increasingly dismissed as naive. And now, division and distrust threatened to delay the Mar-a-Lago investigation.

A history of idealism and abuse

The relationship between the DOJ and the FBI, the country’s two most powerful federal law enforcement agencies, had ebbed and flowed in their century-long joint existence.

Located a few blocks from the White House, the Justice Department, led by the attorney general, oversees the FBI. The department’s mission is to apply the law equally, without fear or favor, to all Americans.

But that has not always been true. During the Cold War, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had repeatedly bypassed the attorney general and unilaterally conducted law enforcement operations designed to infiltrate, disrupt, and discredit political leaders and organizations that Hoover deemed subversive.

Hoover’s perceived enemies ranged from Martin Luther King Jr., who the FBI director viewed as a communist, to the right-wing John Birch Society. Hoover also secretly provided the eight presidents he served — four Republicans and four Democrats — with dirt on their political rivals.

Justice Department officials committed abuses, as well. In the early 1970s, John Mitchell, Richard Nixon’s attorney general, used the Justice Department to target Nixon’s perceived political enemies, from opponents of the Vietnam War to Black nationalist groups to officials suspected of leaking politically damaging information about the president.

After the Watergate scandal, sweeping reforms were enacted in the late 1970s to prevent presidents, attorneys general, and FBI directors from using the DOJ and FBI for improper political or personal gain.

Those reforms also reinforced the dual, and contradictory, duties of the attorney general and the FBI director. Both leaders were expected to enact the broad policies of the president, such as cracking down on crime or strictly enforcing environmental laws.

At the same time, they were expected to investigate, in a fair and nonpartisan manner, potential crimes or corruption by presidents and their aides. The tension between those two missions — serving a president and investigating one — exploded during the Trump and Biden years.

Hyperpartisanship, conspiracy theories, and distrust

The disagreement between the DOJ and FBI officials over Mar-a-Lago was a microcosm of the hyperpartisanship and conspiracy theories undermining public trust in government institutions. It also fueled divisions between and within the organizations.

When Matthew Olsen, the head of the DOJ's National Security Division, which investigates leaks of classified information, arrived at the Aug. 2 meeting at the FBI he brought a draft search warrant with him.

DOJ officials feared that foreign adversaries might try to gain access to the classified documents in Mar-a-Lago. If DOJ prosecutors could persuade a federal judge to sign off on the warrant, they argued, FBI agents could immediately enter Mar-a-Lago without Trump’s permission and secure the documents.

D’Antuono and other FBI agents were determined to recover the classified documents, but not in a way that they saw as needlessly provocative. D’Antuono worried that an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago would bolster years of exaggerated claims from Trump that the bureau was politically persecuting him.

At the outset of the meeting at the FBI, Bratt argued that Trump’s defiance was clear. After months of requests from the National Archives, the former president had returned 15 boxes of material that included 197 documents with classification markings in January 2022, a year after leaving office. Other documents from his time in the White House, though, appeared to be missing.

In May, Justice Department lawyers had obtained a subpoena that legally required Trump to return all of the classified material.

On June 3, Bratt and two FBI agents had visited Mar-a-Lago and met in person with Trump’s lawyers. The former president’s attorneys handed over another 38 documents that contained classification markings and gave them a signed certification stating that “any and all” documents responsive to the subpoena had been provided.

Trump himself had greeted Bratt and the FBI agents and promised to cooperate, saying he was “an open book.”

After Bratt and the FBI agents left Mar-a-Lago, they received a tip that prompted them to subpoena surveillance camera footage from Mar-a-Lago. What it showed stunned many of them.

The day before Bratt and the FBI agents arrived, employees had moved dozens of boxes of documents out of a storage room. Whoever had told them to move the boxes could be charged with obstructing a federal investigation.

The surveillance videos prompted two senior FBI officials, who initially opposed the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, to support one. The FBI had investigated hundreds of cases of classified information being reportedly mishandled since 2017. During that period, the bureau conducted more than 80 searches to recover classified documents.

But D’Antuono and several of his subordinates in the FBI’s Washington field office still didn’t think that the search needed to be done immediately. D’Antuono felt that the documents were secure, noting that Secret Service agents were present at the resort.

As the meeting dragged on, the discussion grew increasingly heated. Bratt raised his voice several times. When D’Antuono asked if prosecutors now considered Trump the subject of the investigation, Bratt shot back, “What does that matter?” but didn’t answer the question.

FBI officials from the Washington field office were in open conflict with Bratt and other DOJ prosecutors.

D’Antuono, convinced that a consensual search could end the standoff, stood his ground. He believed that they could negotiate with Trump’s lawyer, Evan Corcoran, a former federal prosecutor, and reach an agreement for a voluntary search.

DOJ officials and senior FBI officials rejected the idea. They said that Trump and Corcoran had already received a subpoena and been repeatedly asked to return the documents.

D’Antuono dug in and said he would only have his agents search Mar-a-Lago if ordered to do so by his FBI superiors.

“I was trying to be a different voice in the room. Why do we have to be aggressive? We have an attorney in this case,” D’Antuono recalled. “If it didn’t work with Corcoran then fine. We would serve the search warrant and go in. No harm no foul.”

The FBI also had a plan in place for how to respond if it appeared that documents were being removed from the property. “In my opinion, there was no harm in doing it that way,” D’Antuono said.

Divergent perceptions of Trump

At the center of the disagreement were starkly different perceptions of Trump. The investigators, like the country, were deeply divided over the former president. D’Antuono saw Trump as most likely motivated by a desire to show off the classified documents.

But Justice Department officials and some FBI officials believed that Trump’s continued possession of the documents was a direct threat to national security. They worried that China, Russia, or another foreign rival could infiltrate Mar-a-Lago and gain access to the documents. Not acting quickly could expose U.S. secrets, spies, or spying methods.

After roughly an hour, the meeting ended in deadlock. Senior FBI officials were unable to change the views of D’Antuono and other agents in the Washington field office. D’Antuono would have to be ordered to conduct the search by FBI Director Chris Wray or Deputy FBI Director Paul Abbate.

After the DOJ officials left, the FBI officials spoke alone. D’Antuono and others from the Washington field office expressed a new concern. They noted that the draft search warrant included a potential criminal charge against Trump that they did not recall seeing before: Section 2071 of Title 18.

The law made it illegal for an individual who possesses government documents to “willfully and unlawfully” conceal, remove, mutilate, obliterate, falsify, or destroy them. If a person is convicted of the charge, they shall “be disqualified from holding” any federal office.

“The barring from office charge,” D’Antuono recalled. “People saw that charge as ‘Aha, is that DOJ’s effort to get Trump?’”

Other FBI officials did not consider Bratt to be politically biased. Instead, they feared that Trump’s years of attacks were now impacting the decision-making of current FBI agents.

“They had a lot of co-workers who were impacted by Crossfire Hurricane,” said the former senior FBI official, referring to agents who were fired for their work on the Trump-Russia investigation. “The lesson some in the FBI took away was: stay away from politically charged cases — they can ruin your career.”

The following day, tensions between DOJ and FBI officials flared again. George Toscas, a DOJ official who had attended the combative meeting by phone, scolded D’Antuono in an email for resisting the search.

“You are way out of line on substance and form,” Toscas wrote. “You and your leadership seem to have gone from cautious to fearful.”

D’Antuono, who felt he had been called a coward, was irate. He believed he was simply being logical and methodical. “I take it to heart to do the right thing in the right way for the right reasons,” he said. “They put such urgency into getting into Mar-a-Lago, for the circumstances, it just didn’t smell right, it didn’t feel right.”

The following day, an official known to few Americans ended the debate over searching Mar-a-Lago. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate, who outranked D’Antuono, agreed that the bureau had taken the steps it needed to execute the search.

On Aug. 8, agents dressed in polo shirts and khakis — not jackets emblazoned with “FBI” — entered Mar-a-Lago and recovered 102 documents with classification markings that Trump had retained.

After the FBI agents left Mar-a-Lago, D’Antuono, who had requested the polo shirts and khakis and been monitoring the search from Washington, was relieved. The agents’ arrival and departure from the resort had not immediately leaked to the press.

That ended just before 7 p.m. In a statement, Trump lambasted the search, declared it illegal and made numerous false claims, including that his home was "currently under siege" and "occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”

What is Trump's goal?

One former senior DOJ official said that Trump’s goal regarding the DOJ and FBI has been clear during and after his presidency.

“I think he is intentionally trying to weaken public confidence in the Justice Department and federal law enforcement in order to keep himself from going to jail,” the official said. “He tries to degrade any institution that acts as a check on his power. He degrades them systematically. It’s all part of a whole, leading him to try to be able to get away with whatever he wants.”

Trump supporters denied this and said the former president has been unfairly charged by DOJ and FBI officials in the classified documents case and in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Current and former DOJ and FBI officials dismissed those claims. They said Trump has been treated fairly by the DOJ and FBI and, if anything, received more deference than other defendants.

Experts said that Trump, to a greater extent than any other president in U.S. history, has successfully discredited the DOJ and FBI in the eyes of large groups of American voters. In an age of hyperpartisanship, it has proved impossible for the country’s most powerful federal law enforcement agencies to criminally investigate Trump or Joe Biden — and maintain broad public support.

In private, exasperated current and former DOJ and FBI officials complained that law enforcement institutions are being asked to settle the country’s political disputes, a task normally reserved for voters, elections, and Congress. They said law the DOJ and FBI were not created for, nor equipped to ease, the country’s polarization.

In his four years as president and three years as an ex-president Trump successfully used conspiracy theories, co-option, and threats to bend DOJ and FBI officials to his will. Those who dared to defy him had their reputations damaged and their careers derailed.

FBI agents have come to politically charged cases as no-win situations that can result in public vilification, the loss of their pensions, and, given Trump’s vows of revenge, potential criminal prosecution.

The former FBI senior official said he worries that young Americans may eventually not want to work in the DOJ or FBI. The country’s hyperpartisanship could erode their interest in serving as nonpartisan public servants. The result, he warned, will be politicized federal law enforcement agencies, cycles of political retribution, and, potentially, political violence.

“The cultural maelstrom, we were all part of it,” recalled the former senior FBI official. “You know that whatever decision you make you’re going to be crucified. You either do the search and get crucified by the Republicans; if you don’t do it, the Democrats crucify you.”

A week after the search, Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested that D’Antuono, a skeptic of the search, was part of an FBI plot to get Trump. D’Antuono, who spent his career working as a public corruption investigator, lamented the public attack.

“God and country for twenty-seven years and then you get blasted by Tucker Carlson and Jesse Watters and called corrupt,” D’Antuono said. “And my parents have been forced to see that. And my kids. That’s not right.”

D’Antuono saw his work at the FBI as akin to that of a baseball umpire trying to call balls and strikes. Throughout his career in the bureau, D'Antuono said, he had always tried to be fair and treat people equally.

“All I was trying to do was call a good game,” he said.
