ਭੂਮਿਕਾ- ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਦੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੋਣਾ। ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਫ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਧਦਾ-ਫੁਲਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ , ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਫ, ਨਿਰਮਲ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਦੂਸ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਰੁਕ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਪ੍ਰਦੁਸ਼ਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤੂਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੁਕਦਾ ਸਗੋਂ ਰੁੱਖ-ਬੂਟੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬੁਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਦਿਵਸ ਮਨਾਉਣਾ- 5 ਜੂਨ, 1992 ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਪੱਧਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੁੱਲ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਦਿਵਸ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਹਵਾਵਾਂ, ਗੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿੱਤ ਬੋਝਲ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕਾਲਾ ਧੂੰਆਂ ਛਡੱਦੀਆਂ ਮਿੱਲਾਂ, ਭਾਂਤ-ਸੁਭਾਂਤੀਆਂ ਗੈਸਾਂ ਛੱਡਦੇ ਤੇਜ਼ਾਬੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ, ਬੱਸਾਂ, ਮੋਟਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਲਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਜਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਅਣਜਲੀਆਂ ਗੈਸਾਂ, ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਦ। ਨਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬਦਬੂ , ਗਲਦੇ ਸੜਦੇ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਅਤੇ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਛਿੜਕੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦੁਸ਼ਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੈ। ਇਹੀ ਗੰਦੀ ਹਵਾ ਸਾਹ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਚਿੰਤਾਜਨਕ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਦਿਵਸ ਮਨਾਏ ਗਏ।

ਪ੍ਰਦੁਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ- ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਲਿਆ-ਸੜਿਆ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਕਚਰਾ ਆਦਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਾਰਖਾਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ, ਘਰੇਲੂ ਗੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ, ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਾਰਖਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਨੀਕਾਰਕ ਰਣਿਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘੁਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਜਲ-ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਖਤਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਵੱਡੇ-ਵੱਡੇ ਕਾਰਖਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਿਮਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧੂੰਆਂ, ਰੇਲ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਟਰ, ਸਕੂਟਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਜਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਗੈਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਧੂਆਂ, ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਲਾ ਆਦਿ ਹਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਅ ਦੇ ਉਪਾਅ- ਕਾਰਖਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਚਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਤ ਜਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਲ-ਮੂਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਦੀਆਂ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾ ਸੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਬਦਲ ਲੱਭੇ ਜਾਣ, ਤਾਂਕਿ ਪੀਣ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਫ਼ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇ। ਸਮੇਂ-ਸਮੇਂ ਤੇ ਨਦੀਆਂ, ਤਲਾਬਾਂ, ਖੂਹਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਜਲ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਫਾਈ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ। ਪੈਟਰੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਡੀਜ਼ਲ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਲਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਮੇਂ-ਸਮੇਂ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਖਰਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਧੂੰਆਂ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਸ਼ਤ ਨਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ। ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਰੁੱਖ ਲਾਏ ਜਾਣ।

ਸਾਰ-ਅੰਸ਼- ਅਰੋਗ ਤੇ ਨਰੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਭਿਅਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਦਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧਣਾ-ਫੁਲਣਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ। ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਰੋਗ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਤੇ ਸਾਫ ਪਾਣੀ, ਸਾਫ ਹਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਧ-ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕੇਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦਾ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਸਾਫ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਕੋ-ਇੱਕ ਸੰਜੀਵਨੀ ਬੂਟੀ ਹੈ। ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁੱਧਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿਹਤਮੰਦ ਤੇ ਅਰੋਗ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚਾਰੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਢੱਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ । ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਭੌਤਿਕ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।

ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । 1. ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ 2. ਹਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ 3, ਭੂਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ 4, ਧੁਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ । ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲਈ ਹਵਾ, ਜਲ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨੋ ਦੂਸਣ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ ।

ਪਾਣੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ । ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਕੀਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਰਖ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਗੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ | ਦੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਜਲ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਡੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।

ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਧ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਕਾਰਖ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਿਮਨੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਧੂੰਆਂ, ਵਾਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਧੂੰਆਂ ਆਦਿ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਹੈ । ਇਉਨਾਂ ਚਿਮਨੀਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਵਾਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੇ। ਧੁੰਏਂ ਵਿਚ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੀਆਂ ਗੈਸਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਲਈ ਹਾਨੀਕਾਰ ਹਨ ।

ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਧੰਦਾ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪੈਦਾਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੀਆਂ ਖਾਦਾਂ ਵਰਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ | ਅਨਾਜ, ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਆਦਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਈ ਰੈਗ ਫੈਲਦੇ ਹਨ ।

ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਧੁਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ | ਬੱਸਾਂ, ਕਾਰਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਦੇ ਹੌਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰਖ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੱਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਕਾਰਨ ਧੁਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਵੱਧ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਉੱਚੀ ਆਵਾਜ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਾਪਣ ਵੱਧ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਸਿਰ ਦਰਦ, ਬਲੱਡ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ਼ਰ ਰੋਗ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।

ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਕਦਮ ਚੁੱਕਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ । ਕਾਰਖਾਨੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਅੱਬਾਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਲਾਉਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪੀਣ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਫ਼ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ । ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਾਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਨਾ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਗਜ਼ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੋਬਰ ਆਦਿ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ · ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਬਰ ਗੈਸ ਪਲਾਂਟ ਅਆਬ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਾ ਕੇ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ । ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਦੀ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਸਖਤ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ।

An Assessment of Environmental Pollution and Policy Initiatives in Punjab, India: A Review

Environmental pollution is a global health concern. Air, water, and soil pollution cause 16% of premature deaths worldwide. Rapid urbanization and industrialization result in the environmental pollution in developing countries, including India. Environmental degradation is a grave issue in developing countries due to a lack of awareness, inadequate legislation and faulty enforcement. This research is mainly concerned with the issue of environmental pollution and various policy initiatives undertaken by the Punjab state of India. Punjab is a predominantly agrarian state. Anthropogenic activities such as burning fossil fuels, stubble burning, excessive chemical fertilizer and industrial waste are significant contributors to environmental pollution in Punjab. This study explores the causes and effects of environmental pollution in Punjab. It is exploratory, and secondary data used in this research were collected from newspapers, e-journal articles, reliable internet sources, government reports, "Punjab Pollution Control Board", and "Central Pollution Control Board" websites. Despite environmental legislation, findings revealed an alarming upsurge in Punjab's pollution levels, leading to air, water, and soil quality degradation. It causes serious health issues. Malwa region is identified as the "Cancer capital of Punjab" due to the shocking surge in cancer cases. It concludes with measures to control environmental pollution. It recommends a crucial need for a comprehensive awareness program and the proper implementation of policies to curb the harmful effects of pollution in Punjab, India.

The current study assessed the air quality of area 3 most populated cities of Punjab- Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. Air quality Index (AQI) parameters- PM2.5, PM10, O2, NO3, SO2, CO of recent 3 years (2021, 2020, 2019) of the 3 areas is studied. The highest annual average concentration of PM2.5 is found to be 163.5 μg/m³ in December 2021 at Ludhiana, while the lowest value found to be 55.2 μg/m³ in Jalandharin September, 2021. It is important to review the literature regarding pollution in India’s polluted areas. Air pollution significantly hurts soil and water resources. The findings of this paper indicate over last few years the rate at which air pollution in India is grown especially in urban areas is alarming. Excessive concentrations of pollutants in air have triggered a state of emergency in polluted areas around the world, particularly in developing countries like India.

ABSTRACT Man is part of nature, and not separate or independent; at the same time man is unique in the influence he has over nature. In that process, if he does not take care to protect and cherish nature, but depletes or destroys nature, he will find that his own life and that of his children is in jeopardy. Curry – Lindahl says: “The human population is in fact the WORST and basic forms of pollution, all major environmental problem that threaten the future of mankind are caused basically by one factor too many people.” It is man’s sheer number which is the root cause of all pollution problems. And as such the modern ecologists have given to baby-boom a new name ‘population’. Human health is a state of complete physical, mental or social well-being and hot merely absence of disease or infirmity. The global strategy as adopted in 1981 is to achieve “Health for all by 2000 through primary health care.” The task is not easy for a county of India’s size inhabited by one seventh of the total world population. Pollution; country’s environmental problems are affected by the level of its economic development, the availability of natural resources and the life style of its population. In India rapid growth of population, poverty, urbanization, industrialization and several related factors are responsible for the rapid degradation of the environment. Environmental problems have become serious in many part of the country and can no longer be neglected. The main environmental problems in Indian, relate to air and water pollution particularly in the metropolitan and industrial zones, degradation of common property resource which affect the poor adversely due to a degradation of their life support system, threat to biodiversity and inadequate system of solid wastes disposal and sanitation with consequent adverse impact on health, infant mortality and birth rate. Air pollution has now been one of the major problems faced by every country of the world. This is because increase in the production and use of fossil fuels in many ways e.g. industrial revolution, rapid increase in urban population results in the increase in urban transport which ultimately pollute the environment. Many cities around the world, particularly in developing countries, are experiencing rapid growth. Larger cities with highly concentrated industry, intensive transport networks and high population density are threats to urban environment. More people, more industry, and more motor vehicles cause ever-worsening air pollution which poses serious environmental threat in many cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other international agencies have long identified urban air pollution as a critical public health problem. The study focused on major pollutants from different sources and impact of pollutants on human health. The study provides links between air pollution and human health. Investigation finds out a complete scenario of air pollution of the study area i.e Karna Basti, Bahawalpur and the research also helpful for discussing about the importance of green spaces in maintain the urban sustainability and show how urban green spaces are helping in decreasing air pollutants level in the atmosphere. Increasing human activities in urban arena means higher demand for energy, goods and services in one side, and more emission and material wastes on the other.

Punjab hasthe most fertile land for agriculture activities in India and ideal for grown wheat, rice, sugar cane, fruits and vegetables. Punjab is, also called the "Granary of India" or "India's bread-basket."It produces 4% of India's wheat and 15% of India's rice. Thus the state is putting great contribution in the development of the country as well as to fill the food basket. But a common practice repeated by majority of the farmers is burning of residue came out from the crops. This practice of residue burning has become one of the major reason of air pollution particularly during harvesting season and has major direct and indirect on the life of living beings, biodiversity and environment in the country. The same time it adversely affects the air quality, leads to nutrient loss, degrade soil properties and cause waste of residue that has now considered tremendous resource worldwide.

Nagpur city is located in Maharashtra state of central India. Business hub and increased industrialization in study area is affecting the environment adversely. Irritating sound sources are tremendously increasing in the study area, it includes highway no-6, Airport, market areas such as sadar, sitabuldi, mahal market etc. Under recent corporate development a carbo hub I sanctioned for the Nagpur city, which may prove the reason of various health problems for the localities. On the other hand heavy constrictions in the city and in industrial areas releasing plenty of dust in the air. The Mihan industrial area and airport are the main sources of air and sound pollution respectively. If lawful control measures are not applied with its proper enforcement, it might be a main reason for declining the health of localities. Deposition of garbage in the precious lakes in the Nagpur city is now a common observed fact. Even the concern authorities are fighting to conserve the lake water, garbage dumping in the lakes is very serious problem. Permanent wall fencing sround the lake may lower the quantity of solid waste deposition. Nag Malla is a big waste water channel originated from the city and deteriorating the Kanhan river. A water treatment plant may solve the problem of pollution of other sources and conservation of water for agricultural purposes. Loud noise of automobiles in the city is one of the human hazards, to the accidents on roads . Physiological condition of human body due to continued irritating sounds are lowering the work efficiency of man power. However the locked doors and windows of hospitals in order to avoid the noise, keep away the patients from free aeration and healthy environment. In present study the certain sources of pollutants are assessed to suggest their possible control measures, so as to lower the wrong human activities and conservation of environmental status of Nagpur city.

Air pollution exposure during childhood may affect lung health later

New Delhi, June 28 2024-

Early-life exposure to air pollution may have a direct effect on lung health later in life, reveals a study on Friday that underlines the need to reduce pollution.

Scientists at the University of Southern California (USC) found that the link between childhood air pollution exposure and adult bronchitis symptoms such as bronchitis, chronic cough, or congestion or phlegm production not associated with a cold — persisted even when the researchers adjusted for asthma or bronchitis symptoms early in life.

The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Clinical Care Medicine, included 1,308 Children’s Health Study participants with an average age of 32 at their adult assessment.

The results showed that one-quarter of participants had experienced bronchitis symptoms within the previous 12 months.

The findings “suggest that childhood air pollution exposure has more subtle effects on our respiratory system that still impact us in adulthood,” said Erika Garcia, Assistant Professor of population and public health sciences at the Keck School of Medicine.

The presence of bronchitis symptoms was associated with exposure between birth and age 17 to two types of pollutants.

One group consists of tiny particles in the air, such as dust, pollen, ash from wildfires, industrial emissions, and products from vehicle exhaust.

The other is nitrogen dioxide — a byproduct of combustion in automobiles, planes, boats, and power plants that is known to hurt lung function.

The study focussed on exposure in children as they are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Their respiratory and immune systems are still developing, and compared to adults, they breathe in more air relative to their body mass.

The team also found that the effect of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter exposure during childhood on bronchitis symptoms among adults was stronger for those who had been diagnosed with asthma as kids. (Agency)

UNEP UNV Young Talent Pipeline begins its second phase

The second phase of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Young Talent Pipeline starts on 25 June 2024. It builds on the efforts of the first phase from 2023 and aims to engage young talented individuals to become future leaders across environment, pollution and climate action. 

This joint partnership initiative between UNEP and UNV has a twin objective:

• To deploy the second cohort of 12 young talented individuals in areas related to UNEP's mandate .
• To seek candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Africa.

If you are 33 years of age or younger, check out the assignment opportunities. Women and individuals from marginalized groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Candidates are required to have academic degrees in relevant areas along with three years of professional experience.

Dynamic thinkers with relevant experience and a passion for the environment particularly for solutions to the triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, nature and biodiversity loss are encouraged to apply.

Selected candidates will be based in UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Assignments are expected to begin in November 2024 and last for 12 months, with a possibility of extension.

UN Volunteers recruited in the Young Talent Pipeline will have access to learning and professional development opportunities, including a suite of online learning programmes.
