In Pakistan, 6th September is the National Defence Day for the remembrance of the sacrifices of our great heroes and soldiers to defend our borders. This day is also called Youm e Dafa Day in Pakistan. This day has great importance that how the soldiers have to save our border from the Indian Army. Defence Day: a story of courage and bravery

On 6th September, India’s attack against Lahore was held and beaten back with heavy losses to the attackers. The Pakistan Army units defending on the ground, supported by the Pakistan Air Force were able to blunt the Indian offensive and roll it back. Two days later on 8th September, India launched its main attack against Sialkot using its armoured division and other strike formations. What ensued has been described as the largest tank battle since the Second World War. It was a hard and bitter struggle fought over many days and night’s resulting in casualties on both sides. In the end the Indian main attack was held and severely mauled. Its armoured division was force to withdraw owing to very high losses in men and material. South of Lahore, Pakistan launched its own counter attack and captured Indian areas of Khem Karan and beyond. This posed a serious threat to the rear of Indian troops facing Lahore.During 6th and 7th September, Pakistan Air Force had also proved its mettle by continuous air attacks from Pathankot to Agra; for the loss of only 06 aircraft, PAF had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft on ground and in the air, and damaged 08, not counting the undermined losses inflicted by PAF’s night bombing.

On naval front, despite numerical less in size Pakistan Navy (PN) conducted a number of operations for creating strategic deterrence and offering a befitting response to Indian Navy. The prowess exhibited by PN ensured that Pakistani waters and sea lanes remain operational for ships coming to Pakistani ports. Pakistan Navy had played its part by launching a successful ‘Operation Dwarka’, vehemently destroyed the Indian Radar system which was guiding Indian Air Force to launch attacks against Pakistan.The core objective of ‘Dwarka’ was multi-fold in effect as it was not only aimed at destruction of the radar but to provoke Indian warships stationed at erstwhile Bombay (now Mumbai) port to come to the Arabian Sea where Pakistani submarine “Ghazi” was prowling and waiting to engage enemy’s ships namely INS Vikrant and INS Mysore to dock out and get destroyed. This manoeuvre had adversely affected the Indian Navy’s operational plans .Operation Dwarka was launched on 8th September and the bombardment on identified targets was completed in merely four minutes.

Having transcendence in operational preparedness, Pakistan navy is no less at meeting the regional and international maritime security obligations. Post 9/11 maritime security operations were being conducted in Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean Region, Pakistan Navy being part of Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan under UN mandate, has actively participated in maritime security and counter-piracy operations. Though a small naval force, Pakistan Navy’s share has remained highest at maritime security campaign after United States. As a result of these collaborative efforts, the maritime zones of the region where merchant ships had to pay war risk surcharge due to piracy, have been excluded from danger zone. Enhancing these initiatives further, Pakistan Navy instituted Regional Maritime Security Patrols (RMSP), an initiative to continue support to uphold international efforts in the region. The main purpose to establish RSMP, is to ensure maritime security at sea for protection of domestic and international trade. Thus, contribution at large is the manifest projection of Pakistan as a state shouldering regional and international maritime commitments.

To sum up, this Defence Day is a day to pledge that Pakistani nation will always remember the sacrifices of its Armed Forces by honouring the martyrs while acknowledging their courage and fighting spirit. This Day should be a day of thanksgiving and the whole nation should pray for the safety and solidarity of Pakistan and also that God gives us the strength, courage and determination, to protect and safeguard at all costs, the freedom and honour of our motherland.

6 September: Defence and Martyrs Day of Pakistan

Every year September 6 is celebrated in Pakistan to pay homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives while defending the country in the line of duty. On this memorable day, the people of Pakistan stands united as one solid edifice to meet the onslaught of an enemy that chose the cover of darkness to achieve its heinous goals of occupying our motherland. When the Indian armed forces stealthily crossed the international borders between the two countries on 6 September 1965, India, without the declaration of war, launched a major military offensive attacking by Lahore, Sialkot and other areas of Pakistan, with the heavy thrust of their tank formations. The Indian Army’s plan was to capture Lahore on the morning of 6th September 1965. On that day, Pakistani nation and the Armed forces rose to the occasion and defended Pakistan with exemplary unity, spirit and bravery.            

The day is marked by holding various kinds of national activities and programs including, flag hoisting ceremonies, holding debates and gatherings to remember Pakistan’s armed forces' excellent performance in the 1965 war, other border confrontations and the brave acts of the officers and men of the armed forces in the line of duty. Armed forces also organize exhibitions for the people, the families of brave soldiers, especially students/ young people to witness the equipment and weapons of war that generate general awareness about the armed forces and their sacrifices for the nation. In addition to holding war memorials, the day has now become an opportunity to honour each and every person who laid down their lives while defending the motherland and those who survived the enemy’s evil designs to tell the tales of their heroics. Hence, the day is now celebrated as defense and Martyrs Day.

The Pakistani Army, Navy, and Air Force all participated in the 1965 War to a greater extent than was necessary even though Pakistan was still a young state and lacked a reliable defensive capability at the time. Indian Military's first assault on the Lahore-Kasur front was immediately ceased by Pakistani forces, but it eventually erupted into a full-fledged fight. Additionally, the Indian Regiment (15 Infantry Division) crossed the BRBLC (Bambanwal-Ravi-Bedian Link Canal) Canal and seized Batapore (Jallo Mur). The same day, a counteroffensive by Pakistani troops comprising an armored division and an infantry division caused the Indian 15th Division to retreat to its starting location. To defend Lahore, Major Aziz Bhatti and his troops stood like a rock and fought like lions and did not allow the enemy to get near Lahore. Major Aziz Bhatti embraced Shahdat and was awarded Nishan-Haider.

In terms of aerial combat between the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and Indian Air Force (IAF). The PAF destroyed 100 Indian aircrafts throughout that conflict, both on the ground and in the air, while also damaging more than 10 aircrafts, without including the alleged losses brought on by the PAF's nighttime bombardment. In this regard, Squadron Leader M.M. Alam, while protecting Pakistan's airspace and shooting down five Indian aircrafts in less than 60 seconds at Sargodha, set a new record in the history of air combat on September 7, 1965. Throughout his career, the pilot downed some nine Indian fighter aircrafts and damaged two, a record which remains unbeaten to date. His courage and valour earned him the Sitara-i-Jurat twice.

On the naval front, despite numerically less in size, Pakistan Navy (PN) conducted a number of operations to create strategic deterrence and offered a befitting response to the Indian Navy. The prowess exhibited by PN ensured that Pakistani waters and sea lanes remained operational for ships coming to Pakistani ports. Pakistan Navy had played its part by launching a successful ‘Operation Dwarka’, vehemently destroying the Indian Radar system which was guiding the Indian Air Force to launch attacks against Pakistan. The core objective of ‘Dwarka’ was multi-fold in effect as it was not only aimed at the destruction of the radar but to provoke Indian warships stationed at erstwhile Bombay (now Mumbai) port to come to the Arabian Sea where Pakistani submarine “Ghazi” was prowling and waiting to engage enemy’s ships namely INS Vikrant and INS Mysore to dock out and get destroyed. This maneuver adversely affected the Indian Navy’s operational plans. Operation Dwarka was launched on 8th September and the bombardment on identified targets was completed in merely four minutes.

Since then, September 6 has been commemorated in honor of Pakistan’s national heroes who lost their lives for their motherland in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war, border skirmishes and war on terror. The day also pays tribute to the thousands of Pakistan’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives while fighting the menace of terrorism. As a result, these sacrifices brought about a new era of civil-military cooperation in Pakistan. It perfectly captures Pakistan's amazing spirit of resistance, fearlessness, and strategic awareness. Defense Day reminds us to stay strong in the face of evil and seeks to convey the right message to the nation's youth and future generations.

Due to Pakistan's armed forces' maneuverability on several fronts inside and across the borders, the world came to know the real strength of the nation regardless of the unfortunate circumstances of the country’s birth. With strong support from the people, Pakistan's armed forces have always managed to successfully respond to any challenge that befell Pakistan's national security, integrity, or sovereignty. As citizens of Pakistan, it is our solemn duty to honor our national heroes and keep their legacies alive through remembrance of this day in Pakistan’s history.

September 6 th is celebrated every year to pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives while defending the country during 1965 Indo-Pakistan War.

On this historic day, the people of Pakistan stood united against the onslaught of an enemy that cowardly chose the shadows of darkness to dent Pakistan’s territorial integrity and freedom of its people.

It is imperative to recount the achievements of our brave soldiers so our youth may not fall prey to propaganda of detractors of Pakistan.

With the backing of nation, the coordinated response of the Armed Forces of Pakistan ruined the Indian dreams of celebrating victory in Lahore. Pakistani Forces, despite relative small numbers and limited resources, routed the invading Indian forces in air, land and sea.

On the night of 6 th September 1965, the Indian Army crossed the international border and attacked Lahore sector.

The plan was to take over Lahore swiftly as a part of blitzkrieg strategy and get the upper hand in Indo-Pakistan conflict which sparked over the Indian-occupied Kashmir region.However, the Pakistan Army units defending on the ground, supported by the Pakistan Air Force were able to blunt the Indian offensive and roll it back. Major Raja Aziz BhattiShaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) showed an unparalleled courage and gallantry.

On 6 September 1965, as a Company Commander in Burki area of Lahore sector, Major Aziz Bhatti chose to stay with his forward platoon, facing armour division attack under incessant artillery shelling for five days and nights in the defence of the strategic BRB Canal.

Throughout, undaunted by constant fire from enemy small arms, tanks and artillery shelling, he organized the defence of the canal, directing his men to respond until he was hit by a tank shell and embraced martyrdom on 10 September 1965.

Two days later on 8th September, India launched its main attack against Sialkot using its armoured division and other strike formations.

What ensued has been described as the largest tank battle since the Second World War. It was a hard and bitter struggle fought over many days and nights, resulting in casualties on both sides. In the end the Indian main attack was held and severely mauled.

Its armoured division was forced to withdraw owing to very high losses in men and material. In response, Pakistan launched its own counter attack in South of Lahore sector and captured Indian areas of Khem Karan and beyond.

In air, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) had also proved its mettle by continuous air attacks from Pathankot to Agra; for the loss of only 06 aircraft, PAF had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft on ground and in the air, and damaged 08, not counting the undermined losses inflicted by PAF’s night bombing.

The PAF pilot Muhammad MehmoodAlam made history by shooting down five Indian planes in less than a minute; his record still remained unbroken. Commonly known as “Little Dragon”, Alamreceived the Sitar-e-Jurat twice for his outstanding flying abilities and valor in air warfar.

On naval front, despite numerically less in size Pakistan Navy (PN) conducted a number of operations for creating strategic deterrence and offering a befitting response to Indian Navy.

The prowess exhibited by PN ensured that Pakistani waters and sea lanes remain operational for ships coming to Pakistani ports. Pakistan Navy had played its part by launching a successful ‘Operation Dwarka’, vehemently destroyed the Indian Radar system which was guiding Indian Air Force to launch attacks against Pakistan.

Far away from home, Pakistan was equally fighting another war on the diplomatic front. The US had suspended military supplies to both sides during the Indo-Pak War.

Both the Soviet Union and the United States took a united stand to curtail the conflict within the boundaries of the sub-continent from escalating into a global conflict.

China threatened to intervene and offered military support to Pakistan. It was to keep China away from this conflict that both the Soviet Union and the United States pressured the UN to arrange for an immediate ceasefire.

The main diplomatic effort to stop the fighting was conducted under the auspices of the United Nations and a ceasefire came into   effect on September 23, 1965. The war ended, both armies went back to pre-1965 war positions, but the tale of valor and sacrifice written by Pakistan Armed Forces became immortal.

To conclude, Pakistan Defence Day is a day to pledge that Pakistani nation will never compromise its freedom and sovereignty.

This day reminds us that Pakistan Armed Forces are ready to defend their motherland no matter what may come.

To date, our forces have remained committed to protect Pakistan, be it the territorial sovereignty or war on terror, earthquakes or floods, pandemics or aiding civilian governments to maintain law and order. People of Pakistan pay tribute to martyrs who bled to protect our future, keeping the idea& state of Pakistan alive and thriving.

6th September Defence day is one of the most important events in the history of Pakistan. Defence day is celebrated every year in memory of the sacrifices made by the Pakistani armed forces in the war of 1965. Indian army crossed the Pakistani borders without a formal declaration of war. This is the day when Pakistanis pay tribute to heroes, Ghazis and Shuhada who sacrificed their lives in order to defend our homeland.

Background of the war: 

Since the British India partition, Pakistan and India had disputes over various issues. Kashmir issue remained unresolved and both countries have fought previously. In April 1965 the Indian armed forces intruded into Pakistani area Rann of Kutch. Pakistani soldiers ejected Indian armed forces and proposed ceasefire which Indian army accepted.

Events that happened on 6th September: 

On 6th September 1965 at around 3 AM the Indian army crossed the Pakistani border of West Pakistan without a warning of war and attacked Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot and Rajasthan. There was a fierce tank battle on the Punjab plains.

 Our soldiers fought bravely and sacrificed their lives to save our beloved country. The Indo- Pak war became an international war. United Nations had to intervene and eventually a ceasefire came into effect on 23rd September 1965.

 Martyrs of Defence day 6th September 1965:

 Pakistani armed forces fought with gallantry and courage but many soldiers had to sacrifice their lives to defend the country from its enemy i.e. India. In defending the Lahore bedian region Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was martyred. He was awarded Nishan e Haider military award for his extraordinary role. He is among a handful of other fierce military personnel who have been martyred and in other battles and wars given the same honour. Major Raja Aziz Bhatti and other Martyrs gave the greatest sacrifices in Pakistan’s defence. The list of other martyrs are shown below:

Our army is the sign of all that and much more. Our troops represent great nation’s fighting spirit, courage and intelligence.

Defence day Celebrations today:

A number of military parades and activities are arranged on 6th September throughout the nation. The latest innovations and modern tactics are seen in military parades. Also, on this day testlaunches of newly designed weapons occur. 

The Pakistani armed forces show their latest missiles, guns, tanks, aircrafts and helicopters. The main purpose is to highlight military strength of the armed forces. TV channels and social media play an important part in promoting these activities on this day. Through media everyone watches the function live. Special documentaries on for example, the soldiers that were martyred on 6th September 1965 and National songs are on aired on TV channels. This boosts patriotism in the people of Pakistan.

September 6, 1965 — the war that changed Pakistan

Apart from these home-truths, the “thousand-year-war” remains an essentially untold and largely forgotten story

The September 1965 War is a turning point in Pakistan’s chequered history. It nurtured many a myth about white gowned “holy men” gently deflecting Indian bombs with an angelic wave of divine hands. It fed our hero-loving masses with new tales of valour and glory in the tradition of Khalid bin Walid and Mohammad bin Qasim. And it turned out to be the first step in accentuating the yawning chasm between East and West Pakistan, which subsequently gave birth to the Third World’s first successful secessionist struggle.

The war also changed our geopolitical environment, unleashed dormant forces and generated a momentum which effectively destabilised a seemingly well-entrenched military dictatorship, while greatly radicalising the Pakistani political consciousness. The rise of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the decline of Ayub Khan are inextricably linked with the 1965 War. Fifty-six years on, cynics recognise that whatever success Pakistan managed to achieve on the battlefield was attributable to three As: Allah, Artillery and Air Force, besides the inspiring melodies of Madame Noor Jehan.

Apart from these home-truths, the “thousand-year-war” which turned into a 17-day stalemate, backed by the climb-down at Tashkent in January 1966, remains an essentially untold and largely forgotten story. Why did the normally cautious Field Marshal decide to take the initiative in 1965? He was a sure-footed General who avoided taking risks, particularly of the kind entailed by Operation Gibraltar.

Since no authoritative account of the 1965 War is available, it is difficult to really understand or analyse the reasons behind Ayub Khan’s decision to launch Operation Gibraltar which sent in forces into Indian Occupied Kashmir to foment a popular uprising against Indian rule. Three explanations are generally offered.

First, fresh from his “victory” over Miss Fatima Jinnah in the rigged Presidential poll of January 1965, Ayub Khan really wanted to do something spectacular so that he would go down in Pakistan’s history as one of its heroes and he was egged on by his sycophants as well as powerful hawks in the bureaucracy. In this regard, his March 1965 China visit proved crucial. Ayub and important members of his entourage were apparently very much impressed by the zeal, dedication and sincerity of the Chinese. At that time, the Chinese were promoting their theory of “People’s War”. This appealed to Ayub Khan and his colleagues in the context of a possible military adventure in Occupied Kashmir. It meant maximum gains (fomenting popular uprising in Occupied Kashmir with possible liberation) via minimum risks (Pakistan Army disclaiming involvement). Second, the brief successful military encounter with India in April 1965 over the Rann of Kutch produced illusions among Pakistani policymakers. They derived broader conclusions from this limited engagement in a desert area and this perhaps formed the basis of the confidence in GHQ that Occupied Kashmir could be targeted to change the status quo. Third, there was the apparent Foreign Office assessment conveyed to Ayub Khan which said that whatever Pakistan might do in Occupied Kashmir, India would somehow never dare violate the international border.

Whatever may have been the Foreign Office view and it would have been naive for Ayub to accept it in toto, the fact remains that ultimately the sole responsibility for his actions and its consequences rests on his shoulders since, as President, he was Supreme Commander and a professional soldier as well. The war which started as a two-phased military operation combining guerrilla and conventional aspects was undoubtedly a brilliantly conceived plan, but which fell victim to poor execution. Mediocre general-ship, lack of coordination and jitters among the high command managed to nullify the bravery and supreme sacrifices of jawans and officers on the battlefield. Inspired by the Maoist dictum that “guerrillas are like fish in water; just as fish cannot live without water, guerrillas cannot survive without people”, a “decisive solution” of the Kashmir conflict was attempted by employing Chinese-style people’s war tactics. On July 5, 1965 a clandestine station calling itself the ‘Voice of Kashmir’ declared that the war of liberation against Indian occupation had begun. The “Gibraltar force” of Pakistani regulars, said to number five thousand men, had started its operations in Occupied Kashmir.

The conventional phase of the operation code-named Operation Grand Slam (like Gibralter Force, also a brainchild of Major General Akhtar Hussain Malik, an avid bridge-player) was aimed at the capture of Chhamb, Jaurian and Akhnoor — the last one being a vital link in India’s communication with Occupied Kashmir. A daring military commander, General Akhter Malik saw an opportunity offered by an Indian military machine that was still recovering from its humiliation at the hands of China in 1962 and the popular agitation in Occupied Kashmir over the Hazratbal incident in 1964, when stealing of the sacred hair of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) preserved in a mosque in Srinagar sparked serious riots. The Gibralter Force plan was undertaken without reference to the Kashmiri people, the need for adequate groundwork, or necessary psychological mobilisation among the Muslims of Occupied Kashmir for an arduous liberation struggle. With the successful completion of Operation Grand Slam near at hand (Chhamb and Jurian already been liberated), General Akhtar Malik was relieved of command in the middle of the battle and replaced by the then Major General Yahya Khan. By ousting a successful military commander and holding back on attacking Akhnoor, Operation Grand Slam was slammed shut! The decision remains inexplicable. One view has it that Field Marshal Ayub Khan personally ordered the change of command and a halt to the attack on Akhnoor under pressure from his former American friends. They had reportedly conveyed to him that an attack on Akhnoor would lead to a full-scale war with India. The other explanation for the change of command was that “credit” for the “victory” should go to the general being groomed for the top Army slot i.e. General Yahya Khan, rather than Akhtar Hussain Malik.

When India did attack Pakistan on September 6, it was a beaming American Ambassador who told Ayub Khan with an air of arrogance: “The Indians have got you by the throat, Mr President, haven’t they!” Concurrently, the CIA was said to have planned a covert operation to oust Ayub Khan through an in-house coup. The Telegraph, in its issue of September 13, 1965, wrote that the CIA tried to recruit Lt Gen Azam Khan, an estranged confidante of Ayub, also a former Governor of East Pakistan, as a potential coup-maker but, Azam “refused to play ball” and promptly informed his former boss. Ayub had earned the wrath of the US because of his friendship with China — the US ‘enemy number one’ then. Pakistan was punished by Washington in another important way. Its sole supplier of weaponry cut off all arms aid during the war.

The war had deep ramifications both in foreign policy and domestic politics. The Sandhurst-trained Field Marshal, with an impressive exterior, emerged with a much-reduced stature. He was found lacking in both military decisiveness and political astuteness. He was unable to stand up to external pressure when he had the entire nation to back him up with unprecedented patriotic fervour in both wings of Pakistan, establishing, for a fleeting 17 days at least, the mirage of a unified monolithic nation. The September war effectively sealed Ayub Khan’s political fate. He had failed in his attempt to liberate Occupied Kashmir. At Tashkent, he reneged on his solemn commitment that Pakistan would never withdraw its troops from the borders until the Kashmir issue was resolved. Kashmir wasn’t even mentioned in the Tashkent Declaration, brokered by the Soviet Union with American endorsement.

While soldiers and officers fought gallantly on September 6, 1965, with the people solidly united around their armed forces, the nation was let down by its leadership which could not take external pressure. What are three key lessons of the September War which remain relevant even today? First is a fundamental flaw in the absence of institutional decision-making. Decisions are taken in Pakistan, both by civilians or the military, secretly, even surreptitiously, by mostly a cabal, rather than through a democratic debate. Second, flawed assumptions become the reason for failure. For instance, the assumption of the September War was repeated in the Kargil conflict 34 years later: India wouldn’t respond effectively to Pakistani military incursions. Third, Occupied Kashmir can only be liberated and the status quo changed through an indigenous and popular struggle of the Kashmiri people, not remote-controlled operations.

6 September marks a remarkable event in Pakistan’s history that showcased an enduring power of unity in diversity. Pakistanis on this day not only celebrate the valour of Pakistan’s armed forces but also honour the strength of unity in its diversity. The Defence day celebrates the resilience of a country that unites a nation to defend its sovereignty, integrity and protect its people. The war of 1965, proved to be a defining moment in Pakistan’s history. The event underscored Pakistani spirit of unity in the face of adversity. The phenomenal display of unity demonstrated that diversity is a well spring of collective strength and resilience. This day also reminds the nation of a responsibility to protect its borders. The citizens realise that the responsibility doesn’t only fall on uniformed personals but on them as well. Historically, this day holds immense significance. It was on 6 September in 1965 that Pakistan faced it’s enemy from western border and showcased its unwavering resolve and indomitable spirit. Events of the great triumph highlight the courage and heroism of our soldiers and leaders. The nation stood one against its adversary. One of the most remarkable aspects of the unity during the 1965 war was the way it transcended Pakistan’s diverse ethnic and regional divides. From the streets of Karachi to the rugged terrains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a sense of oneness prevailed. Punjabis, Pashtun, Sindhis, Baloch and various other ethnic groups put aside their differences to stand united in defence of their homeland. The national identity took precedence over all other affiliations. The unity among Pakistanis was not confined to the home front. Politicians and diplomats worked in harmony, presenting a united front to the international community. The leadership’s determination to safeguard the nation’s interests in the face of adversity was emblematic of the collective spirit that ran through all levels of society. Unity during the war extended beyond emotional support. Pakistanis from all walks of life contributed to the war effort. Citizens donated generously to funds set up to support the armed forces and their families. Volunteers provided essential services to soldiers and their families. Women also played a vital role by volunteering in hospitals, raising funds, and boosting the morale of soldiers on the frontlines. The defence day continues to be an opportunity to remember those who laid their lives for the defence of the nation. It also aims to inspire the youth and remind them the fact that diverse nations can overcome the obstacles when unified. This day puts emphasis on idea of national cohesion. It reiterates that rather dividing us, this diversity should be a source of strength, enriching our collective identity. The day also recognises the struggle and determination of our non muslim uniformed personals. As per available accounts fifty-eight non-Muslim militant personals laid their lives for Pakistan. Six non-Muslim soldiers sacrificed their lives in the war of 1965. Therefore, as a nation we must honour the white part of our flag who are whole heartedly ready to sacrifice for this land. Paying high regards to our minorities can contribute to overcome the communal tensions in Pakistan which recently emerged. The idea of promoting unity in diversity goes beyond the borders. Its message resonates globally. Communal tensions and challenges are problems that affect the nations across the globe. The example of Pakistan in context of 6 September, serves as a reminder that diversity is strength rather than a burden. Together we can create more inclusive communities that thrive on richness of their various components. Pakistan’s Defence Day is a tale of unity in diversity stands as a beacon of hope in a world beset by polarisation and divides. It proves that despite our differences, we can unify behind one another to advance a shared goal. Beyond national boundaries, this oneness resonates with other countries that seek harmony in the midst of variety. Let us not only remember our great martyrs of September 6 but also reaffirm our dedication to maintaining our togetherness. Let this day serve as a reminder that we are stronger together, that diversity is a strength, and that patriotism cuts across all barriers. Defence Day is one of the most significant events in the history of Pakistan. Defence Day is celebrated on the 6th of September every year in Pakistan. It was on this day in 1965, that India launched her forces and attacked Pakistan across the international border without a warning or a declaration of war.   This is the day when we pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defending their homeland from the enemy. It was a time when not only our brave soldiers but the entire nation was thrown into the mold of a cohesive unit to defend our homeland, defeating the Indian Army and pulling them back on every front.   Pakistan and India, both countries fought that war for the issue of Kashmir but this issue remained unsolved. A lot of people lost their lives from both countries and a lot of weapons were used. At last on the 6th of September, this war was ended with the support of the United Nations. The day of 6th September starts with special prayers for the peace and prosperity of Pakistan.   The President and Prime Minister give an address. 'Pakistan Armed Forces' displays the latest missiles, tanks, guns, army aviation helicopters, and armament being used by Engineers, Electrical and Mechanical Corps, Army Air Defense, Signals, Army Service Corps and Army Medical Corps live in various places.   By going to specific places everybody is able to watch such functions live. These shows are seen on national television channels too. National songs, special documentaries about 6 September 1965, and the stories of those who were martyred that day are seen on television. The change of guard ceremony takes place at Mazar-e-Quaid, Karachi, where Pakistan Air Force Academy cadets present and take command of the Guard of Honour.   We should all be proud of our powerful armed forces and their constitutional role in protecting our country's physical frontiers and defence. We may face economic challenges but we are secured from external threats by what many around the world consider to be one of Asia's strongest military powers. We pay homage to their sacrifices, as we honour our former war heroes.   But our armed forces not only engages in warfare but also contributes in peacetime to the country. Most frequently armed forces carry out humanitarian operations and provide national relief services in situations such as floods, earthquakes, etc. Many of the institutions of the armed forces, such as their schools, universities, hospitals, etc., which operate under military control, often provide vital services to civilians.   As of the September 1965 war with India, Pakistan emerged as a powerful and self-confident country, proud of itself and its armed forces. It was a nation united in the face of India's threat. For war success, national unity and complete support for the armed forces in the field are necessary. With the help of the government, Pakistan's Armed Forces repelled India's naked aggression across the international border and making it pay a price by taking four times more territory than India and forcing it to accept a truce, return to the negotiating table and vacate each other's territory. It was definitely their finest hour of glory, and a day for future generations to recall the soldiers and civilians of that time.   Each and every Pakistani has this spirit of brotherhood in their hearts, if you dare to hurt one of us, we will all stand together as one country, for we have no predicament of caste, no color of faith among us, we are brothers and sisters standing together as one, under one flag, and when we stand together we can teach you a lesson that you will surely never forget.   Honouring and saluting our national heroes is never tardy. At any time, any school or community event can be arranged to recognize all those uniformed men and women who have served to protect our country. We, too, should raise awareness of their significance and activities on social media. Our discussions and talks with family and friends may also include the subject of the military's significance and constitutional position.

Defence Day of Pakistan is observed annually on September 6, commemorating the day when Pakistan’s national armed forces successfully defended the attack of Indian military in the India-Pakistan War of 1965.

Without any formal declaration of war, the Indian military crossed the international border at midnight and attacked the cities of Lahore, Kasur, and Sialkot. Its main focus was to capture the Lahore city of Pakistan, and their army generals bragged that they would celebrate their success party late evening in Lahore’s Gymkhana Club.

The 17-days long war ended on September 22, 1965, when both sides agreed to the United Nations-administered ceasefire though Pakistan’s strong defence not only crushed the Indian military but also thumped the Indian motives and retaliated so strong that the Indian forces escaped back to their country.

Empowered’ with enthusiasm and valor, Pakistanis tackled Indian-surprise attacks effectively, making them understand that battling with Pakistan isn’t that simple!

India wanted Lahore. Did they achieve? The answer is a big NO. Pakistan was able to defend its territory against India’s offensive!

The Real Story: What Happened

1). At midnight of 5/6 September, without any formal declaration of war, Indian armed forces attacked Pakistan in a surprise move. They crossed the international border and attacked the Lahore and Kasur fronts.

The Indian army was 5x bigger than Pakistan and had advanced armories and weapons gifted by America. Having such power and state of the art weapons, India was highly hopeful of the victory. Their army generals bragged that they would enjoy their evening tea in Lahore and celebrate late night war-success party in Lahore’s Gymkhana club.

The surprise attack by the Indian Army in Lahore was strongly defended by the Pakistani military. The Pak Army and Pak Airforce halted the surprise Indian attack, causing heavy casualties on the assailant.

Strange miracles happened during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. After the war, many Indian soldiers claimed that they saw a large army of white angels with sharp swords. Renowned writer Mumtaz Mufti (1905-1995) mentioned the 1965 war miracles in his books. Here’s an extract of all those listed miracles:

• There was a Saint of Lahore who always kept quiet, called Chup Shah. But suddenly before the 1965 war, he started shouting in the streets: “O people of Pakistan, Today God will show miracles, Fear not, Victory will be ours”.
• Indian Army despite 5 times bigger than Pakistan Army was unable to carry out its objectives. When asked from several Indian soldiers why they failed in their mission, they replied that they saw hundreds of white horse riders wearing white dresses, coming to attack them with sharp swords in their hands.
• Indian XEN’s pilot son, who was caught during the war due to bail out, told that he didn’t know how he bailed out. “I heard voices from everywhere that Bail out, Bail out – even when there was no Pakistani aircraft tracing me to attack. I got so much confused, that I bailed out”.
• Indian General Kariepa’s son, who came to attack River Ravi’s bridge in Lahore, told that he was unable to do so. When asked why? He replied that when he reached River Ravi, he saw six bridges instead of one!
• Jang Newspaper received a letter from Madina Munawara. The letter told that one the night of September 6, two people from Madina Munawara dreamt that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is going on a horse. When they humbly asked the Prophet, where’s he going? He replied: “Going on Jihad in Pakistan”.
• Renowned Hakeem Nayyar Wasti was in Madina Munawara amid 1965 war. Subsequent to returning to Pakistan, he reported that a woman who lived in Madina from last 18 years and she every day sat close to the Blessed grill of Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH) told on 6 September that she saw Prophet (PBUH) rapidly coming out of his grave. His Hair was unfastened. She never observed Blessed Prophet (PBUH) in such haste before.
• Nayyar Wasti Sahib stated, a Saint who used to meet him in Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH) on a regular basis, vanished on 6 September. One of his pupils told that he has gone to Pakistan for Jihad.
• Indian Army, who was attacking Sialkot city, stopped by looking vacant battlefield. They thought it was a game by Pakistan Army to encircle them.
• Many bombs were descended on Sargodha but only two blasted and that too away from the target.
• 21 bombs were descended in Rawalpindi but only 5 got exploded.
• Many Indian soldiers claimed that instead of a few hundred Pak soldiers, they saw millions of soldiers coming to attack them. “Huge army with swords gave us losses. Light emanated from their swords’” – a statement by Indian army personnel after the Indo-Pak War of 1965.
• Indian army prisoners’ who were caught in Sialkot, later asked the Pakistani officers: “‘Who were those white dress soldiers in your army”‘
• A prisoner of Khemkaran told that he saw horse riders in red dresses, which completely confused his entire group who was ready to attack Pakistan.
• An Indian Pilot prisoner in Multan told that he saw three old men catching the bombs dropped by him from the aircraft and throwing them away’.

The reason of Pakistan and India war was the issue of Kashmir, but unfortunately that issue is still unsolved at all. A lot of people sacrificed their lives and the date when this was got finished is now celebrated as Defence day of Pakistan .

There were so many army officials and soldiers who led their lives in the way of this defense as they preferred losing their lives but didn’t let Indian army get success in their dirty intentions of conquering Lahore and Punjab.

The Army officers like Captain Sarwar Shaheed, Major Tufail Shaheed, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, Sarwar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Lance Naik Muhammad Mehfooz Shaheed, and Havaldar Lalak Jan Shaheed gave sacrifices of their life for Pakistan and were awarded with “Nishan-e-Haider” for their acts of exceptional bravery. Nishan-e-Haider is a highest military award given to brave martyrs of Pakistan army those who left remarkable examples of bravery and sacrifice for nation and country.
