Choosing a topic is the first and one of the most important steps in writing your thesis. Your topic should align with your field of study and be something you're passionate about.
Think about the courses or specific areas that have intrigued you the most. Your topic should be specific enough to allow for in-depth research but broad enough to ensure you can find ample resources.
💡 Pro tip: How to find a perfect thesis topic
When I was choosing my Bachelor's thesis topic, I did lots of research, and ended up finding a topic that (to my knowledge) had never been studied academically before. So, my thesis became the first ever academic study on that topic!
Here are some tips which helped me find a unique Bachelor's thesis topic:
Brainstorm several ideas and discuss them with your advisor or professors. Your professors have had many different topics proposed by students over the years, and they'll be able to tell you if your topic has credence or if you should choose something else.
Analyze the current existing academic research on the topic. You can use Google Scholar for this. See what similar studies have been published already, and try to identify gaps in existing research.
Aim to choose a topic that you won't lose interest in easily. The best way to do this is by choosing a topic you've been interested over a longer period of time, or something related to the future job you'd like to do.
Be careful with scope of your research. You'll have a limited amount of time and resources to complete this research, therefore it's important to narrow down the topic enough so that you can complete the thesis successfully in a reasonable timeframe.
Step 2: Conduct preliminary research
Once you've settled on a topic, it's time to dive into preliminary research.
Start by reading existing literature to grasp what has already been written on the subject. This will help you identify gaps in the knowledge that your thesis could fill. Take detailed notes and bookmark essential resources for easy reference later.
- Use academic databases like JSTOR, Google Scholar, and your university library . You can even get access to premium sources and databases through your university.
- If your topic is in IT, design or other "practice-based" majors, find books written by reputable practicians of the field (those either working as professors or if they've had an extensive experience in the field).
- Keep a research journal to track your sources and thoughts. When I wrote my thesis, I originally tracked all of my sources in Notion, because it's good for creating solid databases of documents.
Step 3: Develop a thesis statement
A strong thesis statement is crucial for your Bachelor’s thesis. It should succinctly summarize the central argument or main point of your thesis.
Your thesis statement will guide your research and writing, so make sure it is clear, concise, and arguable .

"This thesis explores the impact of social media on academic performance, arguing that excessive use negatively affects students’ grades and overall educational outcomes."
Step 4: Structure your Bachelor’s thesis
Understanding the structure of a Bachelor's thesis can help you organize your thoughts and plan your writing.
While the exact structure can vary depending on your institution's guidelines, a typical structure includes:
Introduction
Literature review, methodology.
- Results and/or analysis
Bibliography
Your title page should include the title of your thesis, your name, your institution, your department, and the date of submission.
Every university has specific rules on how their title page should look. Ensure that you follow your institution's formatting guidelines carefully .
If your advisor hasn't shared any specifics, make sure to double-check on the university website and with the student office.
An abstract is a brief summary of your thesis , usually around 150-250 words.
It should outline your research question, methodology, results, and conclusion.
💡 Pro tips:
- Write the abstract last, after completing your thesis.
- Focus on the purpose, methods, results, and implications of your research.
Table of contents
The table of contents should list all the sections of your thesis along with their page numbers.
The easiest way of generating an accurate table of contents is to use word processing software to generate a table of contents automatically.
For example, Microsoft Word will auto-generate the table if you've been using proper heading and text formatting. You can find the option Table of Contents option in References :
Note: Make sure to update the table of contents as you make changes to your document (update the entire table, not just page numbers).
The introduction is incredibly important part of your thesis as it sets the stage for the rest of the paper.
Here are key things you should do in the introduction :
- Introduce your topic.
- Provide background information needed for understanding the topic.
- State your research question and thesis statement.
- Clearly outline the scope and significance of your research.
In the literature review, you'll summarize and evaluate existing research on your topic. This section demonstrates your understanding of the field and helps to establish the context for your own research.
🧮 Number of pages
There's no specific number of pages you need to have for this section, but it's important that you show the depth of your research and your understanding of the topic.
When I wrote my thesis, the literature review section was 5 pages long, but anything between 3-6 pages is standard for a Bachelor's-level thesis.
📑 Organizing the sources
When you're writing your literature review, make sure to organize the review thematically rather than chronologically.
Think about how you want to present information, cluster topics together, and then add the sources to that existing structure.
Make sure to break up the text with relevant headings to make it easier for the reader to follow your line of thought.
✂️ Maintain a critical stance
No scientific paper is perfect. Even the best existing research in the world can be improved in some way.
So, you must critically analyze the sources , highlighting both their strengths and weaknesses.
Explain what they did right, how they're relevant to your topic, and why you included them in your thesis (there should always be a reason). Then make sure to also analyze their weaknesses, oversights, gaps in scope, and similar critiques to maintain a balanced view.
The methodology section explains how you conducted your research.
This section will differ greatly depending on your major, university or even advisor. Therefore it's crucial that you ask your advisor if they have any guidelines or suggestions on how you should carry out your research efforts .
If they say it's up to you, make sure to do a lot of research on the best practices and options for the outcome you're looking for.
But to give you an idea, common methodologies include:
- Qualitative research
- Quantitative methods
- Mixed methods
- Case studies
- Experiments
- And many more
Whatever method you end up following, it's important to justify your choice of methods and how they align with your research question .
The results section presents the findings of your research.
Depending on the method you used to collect and analyze the data you're working with, you can use tables, figures, and charts to illustrate your data clearly.
When it's time to write this part of your thesis, make sure to always start with the most important findings . This will pique your reader's attention and give them an overall context for more specific findings.
The discussion section is where you'll:
- Interpret your results
- Explain their significance
- Relate them back to your research question
- Discuss any limitations of your study
- Suggest areas for future research
At a Bachelor's level, you won't be expected to present groundbreaking research, but you should analyze the results you presented in the previous section . This means you should remain objective and present both the strengths and the weaknesses of your research.
You'll also be expected to discuss your results in the larger context of existing research , and mention if those result confirm or contradict previous studies on the topic.
The conclusion should summarize your main findings and restate the significance of your research.
A good conclusion:
- Is concise and to the point
- Does not introduce new information
- Highlights the broader impact of your findings
Your bibliography section should list all the sources you cited in your thesis.
Depending on the citation style and your university's requirements, this section can be called:
- References : A widely used term in academic writing. It lists all the sources directly cited in the thesis.
- Bibliography : Used interchangeably with references, but sometimes denotes both works cited and other materials consulted, even if not directly cited in the thesis.
- Works cited : Often used in the humanities, especially in Modern Language Association (MLA) style, this section lists only the sources that have been referenced in the thesis.
- List of references : Another variation that is formal and straightforward, often seen in technical fields.
This section should include resources you used for the thesis and should begin on its own page.
Different citations styles will have different formatting requirements, so it's a good idea to double-check that you've adhered to all the necessary rules.
If you have additional material, such as questionnaires or raw data, include them in the appendices.
Appendices are the material that supports your research but would clutter the main text.
Refer to the appendices at appropriate points in your thesis.
Writing a Bachelor's thesis doesn't have to be overwhelming. By choosing a relevant topic, conducting thorough research, and following a clear structure, you can successfully complete your thesis and make a meaningful contribution to your field.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Seek support from your advisors, professors, and peers.

Bachelor thesis seminar, seminar description.
The Bachelor thesis seminar takes place every semester in form of weekly or bi-weekly (summer term) sessions of 2 hours each. Participants are required to be accepted for writing their Bachelor thesis at the Chair of Entrepreneurial and Behavioral Decision Making . (Please note the information on the application process for Bachelor theses). Participation in all seminar sessions is mandatory.
During the first weeks of the term, there will be an introduction to basic methods of scientific writing (structure, literature research, quoting, etc.). In the following weeks, Bachelor candidates present and discuss part of their Bachelor thesis, which enables additional feedback and discussing additional aspects of their thesis.

Bachelor's Programme in Business
Writing your bachelor's thesis.
To earn your Bachelor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree, you are required to write a bachelor’s thesis in accordance with the instructions given by your major. The associated bachelor’s thesis seminar will help you in the writing process, as will your designated thesis advisor. Please note that you must be enrolled as an attending student for the right to study which relates to the bachelor’s thesis you are writing.
Credits awarded for the bachelor’s thesis and seminar
The structures of both the bachelor’s thesis and the related bachelor’s thesis seminar have changed as of 1 August 2022. Previously, students were awarded 2 credits for attending the bachelor’s thesis seminar, but now the workload of the seminar is included in the 10 credits given for the bachelor’s thesis.
If you are studying according to the 2020–2022 curriculum or earlier, but are taking part in the Bachelor's thesis and seminar course after 1 August 2022, to make up for the credit difference, you must earn 2 more credits towards the electives or some other study module in your degree.
How to write and submit my bachelor’s thesis?
- You will find the seminar in your personal study plan or on the programme pages under Curriculum.
- Register for the bachelor’s thesis seminar on Sisu.
- Take part in the seminar work and write your bachelor’s thesis.
- Write your maturity essay (instructions further down on this page).
- Submit your thesis as a single PDF/A file containing the cover page and thesis abstract. See below for details on preparing the file.
- Practice saving the thesis in the correct format before the deadline date, because if you encounter any problems, you will not have time to fix them on the day your thesis is due.
- Submit the same file to both systems.
- You have to be enrolled as an attending student for the right to study to which the bachelor’s thesis and maturity essay relate.
- The abstracts of bachelor's and master's theses to be saved from January 1, 2024 will always be openly published in the Aaltodoc publication archive together with other metadata of the theses. Read more about theses as public documents here .

How to format your thesis for submission
- Use the thesis template for all Aalto University Schools that can be found here . The first page of the submitted file should be the cover page, while the next should be the thesis abstract page. Use the same language in the cover page and abstract as you have in the bachelor’s thesis.
- Please note that the maturity essay is a separate element of the bachelor’s degree, evaluated against a specific set of criteria. You cannot use the thesis abstract of your bachelor’s thesis as your maturity essay. Read more about the maturity essay below on this page.
- Save your file as an archival PDF/A file. Suitable formats: PDF/A-1a, -1b, -2a and -2b. Do not use any other file format.

What if I notice an error in my bachelor’s thesis after I have submitted it?
- Ask for your eAge form to be returned to you by emailing to [email protected] .
- Correct the error in your thesis.
- Submit the corrected version to the MyCourses workspace no later than on the deadline date.
- Once you get your eAge form back, replace the thesis file with the corrected one and resend the form.
- If you had submitted the earlier version of the thesis separately to your thesis advisor, send the corrected version also to the thesis advisor.
- Suspend the thesis evaluation process by sending an email to the planning officer of your programme or to [email protected] .
- Let the thesis advisor evaluate your thesis and then follow the instructions given in item 3 below.
- If you wish to correct an error in your thesis after its evaluation, you can append an errata document to your thesis as instructed below.

Maturity essay
You must write what is called a ‘maturity essay’ as part of your thesis process. The maturity essay is obligatory for a bachelor’s degree and for a master’s degree. The purpose of maturity essay is:
- to demonstrate conversance with the subject area of your thesis, and
- to demonstrate, if necessary, your proficiency in the language of your primary and secondary education.
You only need to demonstrate your language proficiency once: in connection with the first maturity essay you complete.
The maturity essay at the bachelor’s level
For your maturity essay at the bachelor’s level, you will write an executive summary or a media advisory. You can choose whichever one you want.
Instructions for writing a maturity essay
Language of the maturity essay.
The maturity essay is written in Finnish or Swedish or in some cases in English. The maturity essay is an obligatory part of the thesis process for all students regardless of their language of education. Read more about the language of education here .
Write your bachelor’s-level maturity essay in Finnish or Swedish , if one of these languages was your language of education.
- The language of education is usually the one shown as your mother tongue on your school-leaving certificate from upper secondary school.
- If you did not complete the upper secondary school syllabus, but completed an international track of upper secondary studies in Finland or the equivalent of Finnish upper secondary studies abroad, then your language of primary and secondary education is the one shown as your mother tongue in your certificate from comprehensive school.
Write your bachelor’s-level maturity essay in English , if your language of education cannot be determined.
- If neither Finnish or Swedish is shown as your mother tongue on your upper secondary or comprehensive school certificate, then the language of education is most likely undefined in your case.
- You must apply for determination of your proficiency requirements regarding the national languages. The requirements must be determined before you write your maturity essay.

Maturity essay assignment
Write a one-page specialist text based on your thesis. In an analytic and reflective manner, discuss the results or findings of your research as well as their significance. Pay close attention to your choice of genre (see instructions below), your headings and your text’s readability and linguistic clarity. Note as well that your maturity essay must function as an independent piece of writing without references to your thesis.
Option 1: Executive summary
The goal of the summary is to support executive decision-making. In contrast to your thesis abstract, your objective here is to persuade readers to ‘buy’ your research results, convincing them that your research has benefits and practical applications for economic life and/or for business.
Give a clear structure to your text and use headings that describe the contents: present your results or findings and their benefits, substantiate the benefits and target them at the right target audience, then propose a solution for the problem you noted.
Option 2: Media advisory
The aim of a media advisory (or press release) is to present the key findings and significance of your research in such a way that the document may serve as a news item and be published in a newspaper, magazine or on social media. Your task is to raise interest in your thesis topic and show the newsworthiness of your findings.
Write the advisory in the ‘inverted pyramid’ news style, providing the target group with the most important information at the top of the text and then proceeding to the less important. The advisory should have an attention-grabbing headline, its opening should encapsulate the essential matter, and it should have a few subheadings outlining the discussion paragraphs.
Thesis template and file instructions
Use a Calibri or Calibri-equivalent font for writing your maturity essay. Use font size 11, 1.15 line-spacing and set all margins at 2 cm. You may use these guidelines as a template in English or in Finnish .
Remember to include your name and student number in the file. When your maturity essay is finished, convert it to a PDF file and give the file a name in the form Firstname_Lastname_studentnumber_Maturity_essay.

All papers must be handed in together with the Submission Sheet . All papers must also have:
- a title page containing the following information: University of Bern, Department of English; title of the paper; name of the supervisor; type of paper (BA/MA, seminar paper, etc.); author’s full name, address, email and matriculation number; and the date;
- a Table of Contents;
- a References / Works Cited section.

Generative AI
Recent years have led to the development of "generative digital tools": computer programs based on artificial intelligence (AI) that produce text, images, videos, or code based on user input. It is vital that students learn how to handle these tools sensibly, responsibly, and critically. This involves an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of AI tools, of academic integrity, and of legal parameters. Academic writing skills will continue to be essential: comprehensive subject knowledge, along with familiarity with academic methods and style are needed to be able to critically evaluate and improve the output of AI.
Students may not under any circumstances use generative AI tools in Core Curriculum Courses or in the courses of the Language Module , except for the authorized explorations that will take place in class to build and improve critical AI literacy. Students in classes beyond the Core Curriculum Courses and the Language Module are permitted to use generative AI under specific conditions (illustrated in detail in " Guidelines on the use of AIDepartment of English ", last updated 08.05.2024).
Failure to correctly log, cite and reference each use of AI tools in written work will be deemed to constitute a case of plagiarism. Bachelor Thesis
Registration for the ba thesis.
The deadlines can be found in the course booklet and here .
The registration for the BA thesis is a two-step process. First, you register your thesis with your supervisor, then you get the ok from your study counsellor and hand in the BA thesis registration form to the secretariat.
Use this BA Thesis Registration Form to register your thesis. You do NOT have to sign up on KSL for your BA thesis as the grade will be entered manually after you have handed it in.
Withdrawal from the BA thesis registration is possible only until 15 April / 15 November in the semester of writing. Thereafter, a withdrawal is only granted on the basis of substantial and documented reasons (e.g. doctor’s certificate), and failure to provide such will result in an insufficient mark.
Format Requirements
The BA thesis is about 15,000 words long and has to be completed within three months of registration. The thesis word count includes everything except appendices and cover page (i.e. references, table of contents, etc. are included).

Prolonging your thesis
At the supervisor's discretion, short extensions may be granted: maximum two weeks for the BA thesis. Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness) may the thesis be extended into another semester; in which case, students may be deregistered from the final colloquium and required to repeat it.
Master Thesis
Registration for the ma thesis.

MA theses need to be registered with the Department of English as well as with the Dean’s Office. Please consult the website of the Dean’s Office for information about how to register your MA thesis at the Dean's Office. To register your MA thesis with the department you must complete the MA thesis registration form and include your supervisor’s and study counsellor’s signatures before handing in the form to the secretariat.
In order to register for the thesis you must have completed all other compulsory modules with the exception of the MA Colloquium. At the moment of registration (early December/early June) you cannot have more than one graded seminar pending (i.e., already attended but still awaiting entry in KSL) and you must have already attended your second MA Colloquium. Furthermore, you cannot miss more than 10 ungraded ECTS (excluding the final MA colloquium) when registering your thesis.
Use this MA thesis registration form (PDF, 87KB) to register your thesis.You do NOT have to sign up on KSL for your MA thesis as the grade will be entered manually by the Dekanat.
The MA thesis is 30’000-40’000 words long. The thesis word count includes everything except appendices and cover page (i.e. references, table of contents, etc. are included).
At the supervisor's discretion, short extensions may be granted: one month for the MA thesis, via the Dean's Office. Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness) may the thesis be extended into another semester; in which case, students may be deregistered from the final colloquium and required to repeat it.
If you want to prolong your thesis you will have to adhere to the deadlines from the Dean's office. You will have to fill in the form you can find at the Dean's office ( here ) and have it signed by your supervisor who has to agree. Your options are the following:
- Extending for one month: You have to get permission and a signature from your supervisor on the form above. Please make sure you hand in your form at the Dekanat at least 1 week before the official deadline!
- Extending for one semester: You have to get permission and a signature from your supervisor on the form above. Please make sure you hand in your form at the Dekanat at least 1 week before the official deadline!
- Second extension for one semester: If you need a second semester-long extension, the Collegium Decanale will need to approve this. Write a short letter (signed by the supervisor of your thesis), submit it to the Dean's Office (for the attention of Collegium Decanale), explain the reasons for the further delay in writing and enclose any employment or medical certificates as applicable.

Copy for supervisor: You will have to hand in the Submission sheet (PDF, 151KB) with the copy for your supervisor . Hand your thesis in either directly to your supervisor or at the main office (use the wooden mail box if the main office is closed).
Copy for Dean's office: Additionally, you will also have to hand in a seperate declaration for your copy for the Dean's office . You can find the form here (at the bottom: "Erklärung zur Masterarbeit"/"Declaration of the master thesis").
Once you have completed all requirements of your study programme you can apply for your diploma.
For BA students, everything has to be in KSL, including the thesis, before the Studienleitung can finalise your planning view. For MA students you will have to contact the Studienleitung even before your MA thesis has been entered (the grade and ECTS for that are later entered by the Dean's Office).
Important: This process takes some time, so get all your paperwork in order as early as you can.
You have two options, apply online or in person.
In order to do so you need to:
- Check on KSL whether your file is in order ( Planungssicht ). If necessary, shift courses into the correct slots.
- Once you have done so, or if you have problems with this, contact the department’s Studienleitung (can be found in the Who to Ask section of the website ) and ask him or her to check your file on KSL.
- You can either ask the Studienleitung to sign the Bescheinigung BA/MA-Abschluss in person or send them an email asking them to set your Major and Minor to "Fachanforderung erfüllt" on KSL. Once your file has been checked and approved by both your Major and your Minor department you will be able to get your diploma issued.
- In order to apply for it at the Dean’s Office you will need to complete the application process detailed on the Dean’s Office website . Furthermore, you will need the confirmation form ( Bescheinigung BA/MA-Abschluss ) from both your Major and your Minor departments signed by the Studienleitung of the respective department.
Important: Please be aware that you cannot click the button requesting your diploma on KSL. You do have to directly contact your study counsellor.

The Bachelor thesis seminar takes place every semester in form of weekly or bi-weekly (summer term) sessions of 2 hours each. Participants are required to be accepted for writing their Bachelor thesis at the Chair of Entrepreneurial and Behavioral Decision Making.
