How to check the Office version you’re using (6 ways)

Microsoft Office is just as popular as Windows, if not more so. And for good reason: it offers a useful collection of apps that allow us to do our work by creating documents and delivering engaging presentations or detailed reports and calculations. If you have problems and Office no longer works, your tech support engineer might ask you about your Office version in order to help. If you don’t know what exact version of Microsoft Office you’re using, here’s how to find out:

First, launch an app that’s part of the Office package like Word , Excel , or PowerPoint . I chose to open Excel . Then, click or tap the File tab on the ribbon at the top. You can also press the ALT + F keys on your keyboard for the same result.

A new menu opens. On the left, go to Account . Then, on the right, check the Product Information section. You should see something like Office , Product Activated , and Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 . The number at the end is the product version you’re using.

If you’re using a subscription, instead of a retail version of Office , it should say something like Subscription Product for… followed by an email address, and then Microsoft 365 .

2. How to check the Microsoft Office version from the About window

You may wonder what version of Word you have or what version of Office you’re using. Open Word or any other app that’s part of Microsoft Office . Click or tap File (ALT+F) .

In the menu that opens, go to Account and then look for About… followed by the name of the app you’ve opened. In my case, it’s About Word . For you, it may be About Excel , About PowerPoint , or About Access . Finally, you see the version number next to this button.

Clicking or tapping on the button opens the About window for the app you’re using. There, you find the complete product version, which includes the build number, and whether you’re using a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office .

TIP: If you’re working with Office documents regularly, you may also want to install Microsoft Office on Android and iPhone .

The menu system presented earlier looks similar and works the same for all Office versions since 2016. However, some people may have versions of Office that are a decade old or even older. If your Microsoft Office doesn’t display the menus shown in the screenshots above, you’re probably using a version released before 2016.

For example, in Microsoft Office 2010 , click or tap on File > Help . Then, on the right, you can see the About section, which lists the version you’re using.

If you want more detailed information about your version of Microsoft Office , click or tap Additional Version and Copyright Information . You get to see the About window, listing the complete version number.

If your version of Microsoft Office is even older, and you don’t see a File menu but an Office button on the top-left, click on it. Then click on Word Options , Excel Options , or PowerPoint Options , depending on the app you’ve opened.

Select Resources on the left, and you see the exact version of Microsoft Office in the right panel, in the about Microsoft Office Word 2007 section.

No matter what version of Windows you’re using, you can find what Office version you’re using in the Control Panel . Open the Control Panel and go to Programs > Programs and Features . Scroll down the list of installed programs until you find Microsoft Office . Select it, and you see the main version in the app’s name. For example, in the screenshot below, I’m using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021 . However, I also have a Version column listing the complete version number on the right. The same information is shown at the bottom of the Control Panel window, as highlighted below.

If you’re using Windows 11, open Settings ( Windows + I ). In the left column, choose Apps and then click or tap on Installed apps on the right side.

Scroll down the list of installed apps until you see Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office . The product version is shown under the app’s name.

IMPORTANT: You may also see an app called Microsoft 365 (Office) . This is the new version of the free Office app , preinstalled on all Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. However, you can’t see a version for this app because it’s not installed as part of the Office package, but as a Windows app, through the Microsoft Store .

If you’re using Windows 10, open Settings ( Windows + I ) and go to Apps .

On the right, you see the Apps & features list. Scroll down until you find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office . Click or tap on it; the version is displayed under the app’s name, as shown in the screenshot below.

NOTE: One downside to this method is that it does not show if you’re using a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Microsoft Office . Also, you might confuse the Microsoft 365 (Office) app with the Microsoft 365 subscription service. However, they are not the same.

You can also use any of the executables for Office apps to find their version. For example, Word uses WINWORD.EXE , Excel uses EXCEL.EXE . To reach the Word executable file, first open File Explorer . Then, navigate to the C: drive on your computer, and open the Program Files folder. Next, open the Microsoft Office folder, access the root folder, and then a folder called Office , followed by a version number. WINWORD.EXE should be there. For example, on my computer, this file was found by accessing this path:

In the file’s Properties window, go to Details and look for the Product version . This field tells you the exact version of Office you’re using.

If you prefer a command-line interface, open Command Prompt , start PowerShell or Windows Terminal . Then, copy and paste the following command and press the Enter key to run it:

The number that comes after Word.Application tells you the version of Microsoft Office you’re using:

• 16.0 stands for Microsoft Office 2016 , Microsoft Office 2019 , Microsoft Office 2021 , or a Microsoft 365 subscription which gives you access to the latest Office apps
• 15.0 means that you have Microsoft Office 2013
• 14.0 is the version used for Microsoft Office 2010
• 12.0 means that you have Microsoft Office 2007
• 11.0 is for the incredibly dated Microsoft Office 2003

There was no version 13.0 for fear of the number 13. 🙂 Who knew that Microsoft was a superstitious company? Another issue is that Office versions after 2016 are no longer differentiated by a different version number in the Windows Registry , which makes this method less useful because it doesn’t reveal the full version you’re using.

How to Find the Version Number of PowerPoint

When asking for assistance with a PowerPoint problem, it’s helpful to know what version of Microsoft PowerPoint you are using. In this post I will show you how to easily tell the versions apart and find the exact version numbers. Please note that only PowerPoint for Windows is covered.

PowerPoint 2003

PowerPoint 2003 is the last version to use a traditional menu bar and toolbar (instead of a ribbon). Follow the steps below to find your copy’s version number:

• Select Help from the menu bar (the last entry).
• Click on About Microsoft Office PowerPoint .
• The version number is listed at the top of the About window.

PowerPoint 2007

PowerPoint 2007 introduces the Ribbon, a panel at the top of the window that organizes commands into tabs. You can tell PowerPoint 2007 apart from newer versions by the Office Button—a round button with the Office logo at the top left corner of the Ribbon. • Click on the round Office Button in the top left corner.
• Select PowerPoint Options from the menu.
• Click on Resources at the bottom of the list.
• The version number is listed at the bottom under ”about Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.”

PowerPoint 2010

In PowerPoint 2010, Microsoft replaced the round Office Button with the File tab. You can find the version number as follows:

• Click the File tab.
• Select Help from the menu.
• The version number can be found on the right side below the Office logo.

PowerPoint 2013

Compared to PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint 2013’s user interface is much flatter, matching the design of Windows 8. To look up the exact version number, follow these steps:

• Select Account from the backstage view.
• Click the About PowerPoint button.
• The version number is listed at the top of the About dialog (including whether you are using the 32- or 64-bit version of Office).

PowerPoint 2016

PowerPoint 2016 looks quite similar to PowerPoint 2013, but Ribbon tab names no longer display in all caps. The steps to find the version number are exactly the same as in PowerPoint 2013:

You can do this easily while using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Many of us use Microsoft Office programs daily, but you may forget which version of Office you’re running. If you need to know which edition of Office you have, as well as which architecture (32-bit or 64-bit), we’ll show you how to quickly find this information on Windows and Mac.

Knowing which version of Office you have can be useful if you are downloading templates and Office add-ins , some of which only work with specific versions of Office.

Open one of the programs in Office, such as Word. If the ribbon looks similar to the following image (ribbon tabs with sharp corners), you are using either Office 2013 or 2016. If your ribbon looks different, skip to the next section.

To find out more details about which version of Office 2013 or 2016 you are using, click the “File” tab.

On the backstage screen, click “Account” in the list of items on the left.

On the right side of the Account screen, you’ll see which edition of Office you’re using and whether or not you have a subscription product. Under Office Updates, the exact version number and build number are listed. To find out whether your version of Office is 32-bit or 64-bit, click “About Word”.

The version and build number are listed at the top of the About dialog box along with either “32-bit” or “64-bit”. Click “OK” to close the dialog box.

If the ribbon in your version of Office has tabs with corners that are not quite so sharp, you are likely using Office 2010. To find out more information about which version of Office 2010 you’re using, click the “File” tab.

On the File screen, click “Help” in the list of items on the left.

On the right side of the File screen, you’ll see which edition of Office you’re running. Under About Microsoft Word (or other Office program), the exact version and build number is listed, along with whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. For even more information, click “Additional Version and Copyright Information”.

You’ll see a dialog box with additional information about the current version of the program and your Product ID towards the bottom. Click “OK” to close the dialog box.

If you’re using Office for Mac, open one of the Office programs, such as Word, and click on the Word (or Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) menu. Select “About Word”.

The About Word (or Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) dialog box displays, listing the current version number and the build number. If you see Version 15.x, you’re using Office for Mac 2016. If you see Version 14.x, Office for Mac 2011 is what you’re using.

On the Mac, there is no choice between running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operating system, since the OS has been 64-bit for several years. Office for Mac 2011 was only available in a 32-bit version, and Office for Mac 2016 is now only available in a 64-bit version.

Step-2: Click on the “Info” option

The next step is to click on the “Info” option. It is the fourth option in the sidebar on the left side of the screen in the “File” menu.

Step-3: Click on the “Version History” option

Step-4: Click on the “Restore” option

In the “Version History” dialog box, click on the previous version that you want to restore. It will open in a new window. The final step is to click on the “Restore” option to restore the selected previous version of the PowerPoint presentation.

The Microsoft PowerPoint for the web application offers the “Version History” feature to view and restore previous versions of a presentation. To recover previous versions of a PowerPoint presentation on the web, follow the 5 quick steps.

Step-1: Click on the “File” menu

In the menu ribbon located at the top of the screen, click on the “File” tab. This will open the “File” menu.

In the “File” menu on the left side of the screen, click on the “Info” option. This will open the “Info” sidebar next to the “File” menu.

Step-5: Click on the “Restore” button

When you select a previous version of the presentation file in the “Version History” sidebar, it will open in the current window. Now all you have to do is click on the “Restore” button at the top of the screen to restore the previous version opened on the screen.

You can also click on the “Save a Copy” option if you want to restore the previous version without losing the current one.

4. How to Recover Previous Version of PowerPoint 2016?

In Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 and Office 2019, the “History” feature allows you to restore a previous version of a presentation slide. All you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps.

The first step is to open the current version of the PowerPoint presentation that you want to restore. Then click on the “File” tab in the menu ribbon located at the top of the screen.

Step-2: Click on the “History” option

In the “File” menu, click on the “History” option from the sidebar on the left side of the screen. This will open the “History” s creen.

Step-3: Click on the “Save” button

The final step is to click on the previous version that you want to restore from the “History” screen. The previous version of the PowerPoint presentation will open in a new window. All you have to do is to click on the “Save” button at the top left corner of the screen in the new window.

Alternatively, you can press the “Ctrl+S” keys on your keyboard to save the previous version.

5. How to Recover Previous Version of PowerPoint on Mac?

On a Mac device, you can recover a previous version of a PowerPoint presentation using the “File” menu. To do so, all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps.

Step-1: Click on the title bar

The first step is to open the current version of the presentation file that you want to recover. Then click on the title bar to select the name of the document.

Step-2: Click on the “Browse Version History” option

In the toolbar at the top of the screen, you have to now click on the “Browse Version History” option. Now you can access all the previous versions of the presentation file.

Now all you have to do is click on the previous version that you want to restore. It will open in a new window. Click on the “Save” button at the top of the screen to save a copy of the previous version of the PowerPoint presentation.

6. How to Recover Unsaved Version of PowerPoint?

The “Recover Unsaved Presentations” feature in Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to access and restore recent PowerPoint presentations that failed to save to your device. To recover an unsaved presentation file, follow the 5 simple steps.

The first step is to open any PowerPoint presentation file on your device. In the menu ribbon located at the top of the screen, click on the “File” tab to open the “File” menu.

Step-2: Click on the “Open” option

The next step is to click on the “Open” option in the sidebar located on the left side of the screen in the “File” menu.

Step-3: Click on the “Recover Unsaved Presentations” button

At the bottom of the “Open” screen, click on the “Recover Unsaved Presentations” button. This will open the pop-up file browser window.

Step-4: Click on the “My Slide Libraries” option

In the “Open” pop-up window, click on the “My Slide Libraries” option to open the folder containing all recent unsaved presentation files.

Step-5: Click on the “Open” button

The final step is to select the unsaved PowerPoint presentation file that you want to recover from the “My Slide Libraries” folder in the “Open” window. Then all you have to do is click on the “Open” button at the bottom of the window to open the recovered presentation file.

How to view version of a ppt file?

In my computer MS office 2013 is installed. I have a set of ppt files, I would like to see the version(2002, 2003 . . 2007,2010) of the PPT file. Please help me with the solution.

If you want to know the version of PowerPoint that created the file (or perhaps that last saved it?) tack .ZIP onto the end of the filename (ie, myfile.pptx.zip) and open it in Windows Explorer or any ZIP utility you like.

In the \docProps folder, you'll find app.xml and near the end of this file you'll find xx.0000

XX will be 14 for PPT 2010, 15 for PPT 2013, 16 for PPT 2016

• I think the versioning is something that was added due to user requests in 2010. I haven't checked, but from your question, I'd guess that you're not seeing it in files from 2007, and there's nothing in 2003 and prior files that identifies version, at least not that I'm aware of. How to check your SQL Server version

Microsoft SQL Server is one of the world's most popular database platforms. According to some estimates as many as one in three databases runs on SQL Server, alongside competitors such as Oracle, MySQL , and PostgreSQL .

However, SQL Server is not a single product. Since its original launch in 1989, there have been more than 20 major releases of SQL Server. At the time of writing four different releases are still supported, namely: 

SQL Server 2016;

SQL Server 2017;

SQL Server 2019; and 

SQL Server 2022. 

All supported releases of SQL Server can handle everyday database tasks, but there are several reasons why it's important to know which specific version you're using.

If you're planning a deployment, or scoping out future database projects, you need to know that your SQL Server installation will be supported for the required duration, or you might miss out on important security or functionality updates.

Each version of SQL Server receives around five to six years of mainstream support after its release, meaning it may receive new features and performance improvements alongside security updates. After this, there's a five-year period of extended support when no new features are added, but security updates and paid technical support are still available. Once extended support ends, no more assistance or updates will be provided, even if critical security vulnerabilities are discovered.

Here are the key support dates for the current major editions of SQL Server:

SQL Server 2016	13 July 2021	14 July 2026
SQL Server 2017	11 October 2022	12 October 2027
SQL Server 2019	28 February 2025	8 January 2030
SQL Server 2022	11 January 2028	11 January 2033

As you can see, the 2016 and 2017 editions of SQL Server are already out of mainstream support and will be entirely unsupported within three years. For this reason, it's important to keep track of the SQL Server version, whether you're beginning a new project or maintaining an existing database. 

Each subsequent release of SQL Server brings new capabilities that weren't available in previous editions. For example, SQL Server 2016 introduced enhanced encryption capabilities, for working with sensitive information such as financial data; it also brought JSON support, making it easier to programmatically extract and process data.

New features in SQL Server 2017 included new string manipulation functions and automatic performance tuning, while SQL Server 2019 brought support for big data clusters and improvements for parallel processing. The latest SQL Server 2022 release has many features designed to work better with Azure and other cloud data sources.

If you're building a new database application, you'll want to know which version of SQL Server you're using, to ensure you have access to all the capabilities you might need.

As well as knowing which major SQL Server edition you're using, it's important to check the minor version number (the digits after the first decimal point) to ensure that the latest available updates to security and functionality have been installed. 

An up-to-date installation might have two different version numbers, depending on how server updates have been configured. If the server is set to receive GDR (General Distribution Release) updates then only security fixes will be added to the original installation, and the version number will reflect that. If it's on the CU (Cumulative Update) branch it will also receive new features and usability enhancements, and will usually have a higher version number.

You can check the latest GDR and CU version numbers on Microsoft's SQL Server update page. At the time of writing the latest updates for the past three releases are:

SQL Server 2017	14.0.2056.2	14.0.3456.2
SQL Server 2019	15.0.2116.2	15.0.4385.2
SQL Server 2022	16.0.1121.4	16.0.4135.4

SQL Server 2016 and earlier major releases were updated with milestone Service Packs as well as individual GDR and CU updates; see the Microsoft website for details of the latest version numbers for different Service Pack levels.

SQL Server version number

There are numerous methods you can use to check the major and minor version numbers of a SQL Server instance. Here are four quick ways to find the information:

1. Use SQL Server Management Studio

Microsoft's free SQL Server Management Studio tool can provide extensive information about a SQL Server installation. After you've connected the application to your SQL Server instance, check the Object Explorer window and you should see the server's version number shown in brackets after its name. If you can't see the full version number, or want more information, right-click on the server name and select Properties to open a window with many more details about the version and capabilities of the server.

2. Query the server directly

You can query a SQL Server's version number directly from a Windows command prompt. To connect to the server, enter sqlcmd -S servername\instancename, replacing server\instancename with the appropriate details for your server. If your connection is successful, you should now see a "1>" prompt: enter "select @@version", then at the "2>" prompt, enter "go". This should return a copyright statement which includes the server version number and build date.

3. Examine the executable

If you have desktop access to the computer your SQL Server instance is running on, you can check the version number by inspecting the executable file that runs the server. By default you'll find this file in a folder called C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL16.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn (the precise path will be slightly different for older versions of SQL Server); navigate here in the Windows File Explorer, then find the file called sqlservr.exe, right-click on it and select "Properties". In the Properties window that opens, click on the Details tab to see information about the server, including its version number.

4. Check the log files

You can also find your SQL Server version number by inspecting its logs. By default, these are stored in a folder called C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL16.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log (again, this will be slightly different for older versions of SQL Server). Note that this folder is protected, so you'll need to either edit its security settings to give yourself access or navigate to it from an elevated Command Prompt.

Once you've got access to the Log folder, open the text file called ERRORLOG, or any older file with this name and a numbered extension. The first line of each log file contains the version number of the server.

This will significantly enhance Check Point’s Security Operations Center (SOC) capabilities and expand its managed threat intelligence offerings.
