All you have to do is enter some basic information about the position you’re interested in, and ChatGPT can create a personalized cover letter for you.

How to use ChatGPT to write a cover letter

Writing a great cover letter can be a time-consuming task, but with ChatGPT it can be more like tailoring a ready-made template.

First, you will need to sign up with your email address. You will then follow the prompt to open a “New Chat”and give the program information about yourself, the job you are applying for, and highlights from your résumé and experience. From there, ChatGPT takes care of the rest. Using natural language processing technology, it assembles an appropriate cover letter based on all of the information provided. Finally, you will want to review, edit, and fine-tune what ChatGPT produces.

To determine if ChatGPT can be used to create a quality cover letter, I tried it out myself. I told ChatGPT to write a cover letter for a job application as a phlebotomist, and this is what I got back:

This is a solid start on a cover letter, but the main issue is that it’s very generic. You’re going to want to put in some personal information about yourself and what makes you stand out from the other applicants before you hit submit.

Now I must admit, what ChatGPT generated is not perfect, but it’s a pretty good template that you can update and tailor with your own information to save yourself time starting one from scratch. All that’s left for you at that point is to review it, add a few details about yourself, and then send it on its way.

With ChatGPT generating your initial draft, there’ll be no more feeling overwhelmed by the task of writing a cover letter—just get creative and let the bot do the rest!

How to fine-tune your ChatGPT cover letter

In order to transform ChatGPT’s response into a high-quality cover letter, you are going to want to spend some time customizing the cover letter for you. Here are three things to consider:

Make it specific to you

Customizing the draft by adding specific details about yourself and the job will make the cover letter less generic and increase your chances of being selected for an interview.

Tailor the opening paragraph by mentioning something you really like about the company, either based on a personal connection or your own research. Further customize the draft by editing it to add specific details about yourself, your relevant experiences, and how they make you a great fit for the job that you are applying for.

It's challenging to write a good cover letter, though, and you may find yourself mired in writer's block. That's why you should use ChatGPT for this task, and this is how you can do that. You'll need a ChatGPT account and a basic understanding of how the service works. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the service before proceeding.

Step 1: Plan it out

ChatGPT can't write an effective cover letter without information about the job you're applying for or the specific skills you want to emphasize. If you have ChatGPT Plus, it may be able to pull straight from the job listing, but you can still guide the free version of ChatGPT quite effectively if you don't have the upgraded version. You'll just have to provide the tool with the following:

Once you have all the details ready to go, use them to customize the draft that ChatGPT generated, further clarifying the individual responsibilities, skills, and other key points about the job. You'll need to be clear and thorough about your own experience as well. If you've also already used ChatGPT to help you write your resume or CV, you're ahead of the curve in generating a seamless cover letter. ChatGPT will come back to you with a cover letter based on what you provided during the resume-writing task.

The screenshot above is the cover letter that ChatGPT created based on the information I gave it from the job description. It's certainly not bad, and you can make any minor edits or changes that you want. However, if you'd like it to have a different tone or to contain more information, you can ask ChatGPT to do that for you.

Step 3: Optionally export to PDF

If you want ChatGPT to export to a PDF, you'll need ChatGPT Plus for this step. Simply ask it to export to a PDF, and it'll do so. Sometimes, however, the results may be a bit weird. For example, the above output did not scale right in a PDF and ran off the side of the page. I'd recommend simply copying and pasting what ChatGPT provides into a text editor of your choice, such as Google Docs or Overleaf.

That's it! Writing a cover letter in ChatGPT is quick and relatively painless once you plan it out correctly. It's also ideal for knocking this task out on the go, such as on a phone or tablet .

Mindlessly copying and pasting whatever ChatGPT generates into a job application, resume, or cover letter and passing it off as your own is not the best use of the technology. “I would caution candidates against copying and pasting,” says Robert Lingham , a technical recruiter who most recently worked at Lever.

A human recruiter or hiring manager will likely be able to tell that you’ve submitted something written by an AI chatbot, because it might lack human tone, nuance, and context. Not to mention, ChatGPT could fabricate points about your experience and qualifications that are straight-up untrue, and lying on a job application is a bad idea in general.

This doesn’t mean that ChatGPT is off-limits for job seekers. “If you’re using ChatGPT smartly, and incorporating things that are true about yourself — more power to you,” says Mandy Tang, a career coach and founder of Rose Gold Careers . “I’m a huge fan of it.”

While ChatGPT can do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to applying for a job, it’s on you to make sure that the information you submit about yourself in a job application is truthful and coherent. “A large language model tool like ChatGPT still has boundaries,” Robert says.

It’s very important to proofread and edit whatever material ChatGPT provides. “It’s still a bot,” Mandy says. “ChatGPT will take its best guess based on your prompts, but you still have to read it with human eyes to double check that it makes sense and has a nice flow.”

As a large language model, ChatGPT is trained on datasets from the internet to predict the word that’s likely to come next in text using probability distributions over words. Sending the same exact generic cover letter for every job is not great form: “You don’t want to send the same cookie-cutter template to every job, because it will look like you’ve just copied and pasted,” Mandy says. Pretend you are an expert in the climate tech space, and you’re interviewing a candidate for a Software Engineer position. Give me some questions that you would ask someone at the senior level. Please limit it to five responses and provide any links for any additional information.

As you can see, ChatGPT generates a solid list of relevant interview questions about key topics related to climate technology. With this list, you can identify your knowledge gaps and start thinking about how you might answer the questions.

The debate about using ChatGPT in your job search speaks to the deeper frustrations that people have about the hiring process. “For the candidate, it’s really difficult, confusing, and opaque when your effort is not tied to a result,” Mandy says. Lots of employers have gotten rid of cover letter requirements altogether. Considering that many organizations use AI in the hiring and screening process, why shouldn’t applicants be allowed to use it, too?

Ultimately, ChatGPT can make you look like the perfect candidate for a role on paper in just seconds — but you’re still expected to prove your skills on your own. “If you somehow hack a system in order to get in front of a recruiter or a hiring manager, you need to be able to talk about the things that are on your resume,” Robert says. “No matter how many prompts you give ChatGPT, and how creative you get, if you get into that seat, you need to be able to execute against it.”

ChatGPT has grown in popularity among job seekers, writing cover letters and resumes in seconds.
One recruiter says it's just a more accessible version of something job seekers have always done.
He cautioned, however, against using it to replace technical screenings or serve as interview prep.

ChatGPT has only been around in its current form since November, and many workers are still torn between viewing it as a helpful workplace tool and a death knell for their jobs.

The chatbot was launched by Open AI, a research and deployment company of which Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a co-founder. People have shared stories on social media about using it to write cover letters , a time-consuming thorn in job seekers' side.

It's a hack that some employers and hiring managers might worry will muddy the process of acquiring the best talent for their teams.

But one recruiter says that's not necessarily true.

Despite what people speculate on social media, using ChatGPT to write resumes and cover letters is not a big deal generally, according to Patrick Laughlin, the general manager at Systematic Business Consulting, a manufacturing recruiting firm. In fact, Laughlin, who said he's witnessed many different hiring processes through the 3,000-plus companies his firm has worked with over the years, says the bot can save applicants a lot of time.

"As far as what ChatGPT offers, on a surface level, it's beneficial to maybe skip a step or two in that process," Laughlin told Insider. "At the end of the day, can it be used nefariously? Yeah, I think it can, depending on the type of position."

But he says that in a lot of fields, at least, it can be a huge time saver.

ChatGPT does a great job of organizing information into a cohesive format, but I wanted to change it so it flowed a little better (it put my education before my experience, making it look at first glance like I didn't have any experience).

Please reorganize the following sections in this order:

Keep your info less sensitive

You'll see that I didn't give the chatbot my contact details to add to the resume. I prefer to keep my sensitive information out of the model to avoid any future data breaches or unnecessary risk, so I'll add my email, phone number and address myself in the final version.

When reviewing ChatGPT's draft, I noticed two issues:

My 10 years as a full-time freelancer needed to be fleshed out, by adding noteworthy projects and long contracts.
The skills list was way too long.

Back in ChatGPT I wrote the following:

Please add two contract roles under Freelance Reporter and Writer in the experience section.

Freelance Reporter at NerdWallet, August 2022 - present. Tasks: Writing personal finance advice articles, providing insights and strategies to educate and empower everyday consumers in Australia. Topics include credit cards, travel points, frequent flyer programs, BNPL, credit scores, money management, and more.

Freelance Reporter at Decential, September 2022 - present. Tasks: Reporting on the people, projects and protocols in the world of web3. Cover news, interview founders, write deep dive features and commentary, and cover in-person events and conferences.

Then, instead of reducing the skills list, I asked that it be arranged in two columns. The chatbot put the info into a table, which I didn't like, so I asked that it be removed.

ChatGPT still had a hard time with it. I asked it again to present the info in two columns, with a space in between but without a table or borders. You can highlight a section and reply specifically there.

But it still didn't work, so I stopped wasting time and did it myself directly in the document.

Final tweaks

Before I made my final tweaks, I asked ChatGPT to provide a short list of suggestions for how to improve my resume. It gave me some solid advice -- like highlighting achievements, quantifying results, tailoring my resume to a specific job, adding keywords and making my professional summary more concise -- but take it with a grain of salt.

For example, my professional summary shows my narrative abilities and doesn't take up much real estate. I did, however, add a section for notable projects.

Though some advice was relevant, like adding metrics to achievements and starting each bullet point with a strong action verb, the others weren't necessary. For instance, I didn't want to make my profile more concise, because that's where I show off my narrative ability for writing jobs. When using artificial intelligence, always trust your human instinct.

Last, I wanted to get it down from four pages to three, so I arranged my major clients into two columns and reduced the skills list. You can see the final version of my AI-created resume below.

Once ChatGPT is done with the nitty gritty, you can add the finishing touches yourself. I'll drop in my logo and byline hyperlinks, then it's good to go!

The world’s been turned upside-down since ChatGPT became popular. It’s brought so much change to our society from our work to our everyday lives. But no sector has been hit by AI detection more than writing.

Look, I get that bad actors who are misusing AI for their own gain exist. But when we start to take AI detectors’ scores as gospel, we’re just perpetuating the cycle since they’re so unreliable.

That’s why we need to break the chain and change the game.

Enter Undetectable AI , HideMyAI , and QuillBot . Together, these three create the perfect mix of text that are both written well and undetectable by most AI detection tools. So, how does it work? Let me teach you.

What are Undetectable AI and HideMyAI?

Undetectable AI and HideMyAI are AI bypass tools, a certain subset of paraphrasers that are made to turn AI-generated text into something that resembles human writing. This is done through rewriting the content, removing AI markers like watermarks and repetition, and adding human errors. Remember that last bit because it becomes important later.

Both these platforms also have output customization features that allows you to tweak the following:

Use Case : Writes the final output according to a specific purpose such as stories, essays, marketing materials, legal materials, and more.
Readability : Adjusts the final output to conform to a specific readability level like high school, university, and graduate school.

What is QuillBot?

QuillBot is similar to Undetectable AI and HideMyAI, but with a specific difference. While the first two paraphrases your text so it could hide from AI detection, QuillBot rewrites your input simply to improve your writing. This platform is a collection of tools that range from a paraphraser and summarizer to a grammar checker and even to a translator.

How to Make Undetectable AI Writing with Undetectable AI or HideMyAI + QuillBot

Remember when I said that Undetectable AI and HideMyAI hides from AI detection by adding mistakes to your text? Here’s an example so you could better visualize what I’m trying to say:

There’s no other way around it — it’s pretty bad.

If our goal is to bypass AI detection, you’d succeed. But any person who’ll read your text will know that there’s something fishy going on. That’s where QuillBot comes in. It’ll be the one that will come in and sweep the mess while maintaining low AI probability scores.

So, let me teach you how.

Step #1: Generate Your Text

First, let’s generate your essay. This one’s pretty simple. Just pick your LLM of choice and let it create your initial text. For instance, this will be the one we’ll use for this tutorial:

When I test it with Sapling , one of the best free AI detectors according to our latest testing , the original text comes with an AI likelihood score of 100% . Keep this number in mind as we go along.

Step #2: Pick an AI Bypasser

Now, you need to choose between Undetectable AI and HideMyAI. Using both could work better against AI detection. But honestly, it will also result in your text being rewritten to the point that it’s no longer readable.

We tested these tools in a head-to-head previously and Undetectable AI came on top, so that’s the one I’ll use here. Here’s what our ChatGPT text looks like once it’s been processed with Undetectable AI using the default output parameters.

Notice how the AI likelihood score lessened by more than 50% ? If you’re worried about that 44.6% still, always remember that it’s widely accepted that AI detection is unreliable . That means having 44.6% is still enough to cast an element of doubt to whoever’s reading your text. Despite that score, this is still considered a success.

Step #3: Rewrite With QuillBot

And just like that, we solved the issue of AI detection. All that’s left is to make our text readable. For that, let’s input Undetectable AI’s text into QuillBot.

So, what’s the final AI detection score?

That’s not bad considering that QuillBot is a diluted version of LLM itself. It’s just enough that you have plausible deniability once someone claims your work is AI-generated. Again, the goal is not to have 0%, it’s to lower it enough that you can claim it’s human work. And we succeeded.

The Bottom Line

Sure, you could argue that the AI likelihood score’s still high compared to just using an AI bypasser, but AI bypass tools won’t pass your class. At the end of the day, AI detectors are known for being so unreliable that some students don’t even pass their class due to false positive detection.
