On a regular day, I was returning from school. It was a hot summer day, and the road was clean and traffic-free. Suddenly, listen to a loud sound: a bike hits an SUV car, and the biker falls onto the road.

Immediately, I ran to the biker. He was without a helmet and heavily injured in the head. Meanwhile, the driver of the car came out and started scolding the biker. I stopped the driver and said, This is the time to help, not fight. I requested that he call an ambulance a few minutes later to the hospital.

This accident experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. This experience taught me the importance of helmets and road safety.

Long Essay on an Accident I Saw

The time was early morning on winter’s foggy day. The road was fully covered by fog, and there was not any traffic on the road.

I woke up early that day for my study. I was studying at my table when I suddenly heard the loud sound of someone shouting. I opened my window and saw that somebody had crashed his car into the wall beside the road.

Immediately I ran to that car, and two of my neighbours reached the car, and we together brought the driver outside of the car. He was bleeding from his head and had several other injuries to his body.

The driver had not worn a seatbelt, and that led to several injuries. I called an ambulance within 5 minutes, and it reached and took him to the hospital. In the evening, the police took his car out.

I remember this terrible experience from that accident. It happened so fast that I just can’t believe it in my eyes. This accident reminds me about road safety and the importance of consciousness when driving.

Narrative Essay on Road Accident I Witnessed

Narrative essay generator.

Accidents on the road can be life-altering experiences, often leaving a lasting impact on those who witness them. One such incident that I witnessed a few years ago still lingers in my mind, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. This essay recounts the details of that harrowing event, aiming to shed light on the consequences of negligence and the paramount importance of vigilance while on the road.

The Day of the Accident

It was a bright and sunny afternoon in mid-July. The streets were bustling with people, and the air was filled with the usual cacophony of honking cars, chattering pedestrians, and the distant hum of city life. I was on my way home from school, walking along the sidewalk, lost in thoughts of the day’s events and the homework that awaited me.

As I approached a busy intersection, the traffic light turned green, signaling for pedestrians to cross. I waited for a few seconds, allowing a car to pass before stepping onto the zebra crossing. What happened next unfolded in a matter of seconds but felt like an eternity. A speeding motorcycle, attempting to beat the red light, swerved into view. The rider, realizing too late that he couldn’t make it, attempted to brake but lost control.

The motorcycle skidded across the road, heading straight for a pedestrian about to reach the other side. In a desperate attempt to avoid a direct collision, the rider veered to the left but ended up crashing into a nearby car. The impact was so severe that the rider was thrown off his bike, landing several feet away, motionless.

The Immediate Aftermath

The scene that followed was one of chaos and panic. The sound of the crash had drawn the attention of everyone nearby. Pedestrians screamed, and drivers honked, creating a cacophony of noise. I stood frozen, my heart racing, as I processed what I had just witnessed.

Several people rushed towards the injured rider and the occupants of the car, trying to offer assistance. I remember the overwhelming sense of helplessness as I watched them dial emergency numbers, their voices urgent and shaky. The driver of the car, visibly shaken but uninjured, stepped out to check on the rider, who lay still on the pavement.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens filled the air as an ambulance and police cars arrived at the scene. The medical team quickly attended to the rider, who was fortunately still alive but seriously injured. The police cordoned off the area, redirecting traffic and starting their preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.

Reflections on the Incident

As the adrenaline faded and I continued my journey home, the gravity of what I had witnessed began to sink in. It was a sobering reminder of how quickly a normal day could turn tragic due to a moment of carelessness. The rider’s decision to speed and beat the red light had not only endangered his life but also those of others around him.

This incident highlighted the critical importance of road safety measures, such as obeying traffic signals, wearing helmets, and driving within speed limits. It also underscored the unpredictable nature of road accidents and the need for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant at all times.

In the days that followed, I found myself more cautious and aware of my surroundings while walking or riding in a vehicle. The accident served as a powerful lesson on the consequences of negligence on the road and the collective responsibility we share in preventing such tragedies.

The road accident I witnessed was a stark reminder of the thin line between life and death and the impact of our choices behind the wheel. It taught me the importance of road safety, not just as a set of rules to follow, but as a commitment to protecting ourselves and others. As we navigate the roads of life, let us do so with caution and care, mindful of the precious lives that depend on our vigilance and responsibility. This narrative serves as a call to action for all of us to prioritize safety and make our roads safer for everyone.

Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate reality of our lives. The daily news reports generally contain at least one incident of a road accident. Depending on the severity of the accident, the number of casualties and the damage done can be concerning. Road accidents cost a lot of lives and property damage. To avoid accidents, everyone should be more careful and vigilant on the streets. As a driver, one must be extra cautious because one mistake from the driver can cost the lives of innocent others.

The Road Accident That I Experienced

I remember the first road accident I witnessed. It had changed my perspective on life. I still remember the date and the day very intricately. It was the 20th of September 2016. I was returning home from tuition. My mother had come to pick me up. It was around 6 o'clock in the evening. When we reached the bus stand, we saw a huge crowd of people at a few feet of distance from the bus stop. There were men in the crowd who were screaming in the regional language.

At first, we couldn't understand what was going on. After a while of careful overhearing of the conversation of everyone near us, we could understand that there was an accident. So to get to the bottom of it we asked a shopkeeper what had  happened. He told us that indeed an accident took place a while ago. He then went on to give us a detailed event of what happened. According to him, a pedestrian was crossing the road. A passenger's bus had hit him. The man was left bleeding on the street. The people in the area then cornered the bus and assaulted the bus driver. The police were called to the scene. As for the pedestrian, when the police came over, they declared the man dead. However, as a formality, they sent him to the hospital but according to the shopkeeper, there is not much hope for a miracle.

This incident made me realize how fragile life is. It could very well have been me or my loved one instead of that man.  The man was not at fault as he was following the rules, but because of the ignorance of another careless man, he had to lose his life. This incident has left a scar on my mind which still bothers me at times.

Road accidents are a fairly tragic event that has dangerously increased in numbers nowadays. Today, there are more automobiles on the streets than ever. Some say that this increase in the number of automobiles is the reason the number of road accidents is increasing too. Some others say that people nowadays have become more careless, this leads to a higher number of accidents due to carelessness. Another problem that is very prevalent in India is the lack of civic sense in people. People in the cities of India do not strictly adhere to the traffic rules; some people also lack the basic road sense. On top of that, certain parts of the city have narrow roads. All these add up to increase road accidents.

Description of Road Accident:

Road accidents are scary for our lives. In recent times it has increased more. Every morning when you open a newspaper every second or third page will have news related to road accidents. The reason for increasing road accidents is due to the fact that people are buying more automobiles and have also become careless while driving vehicles.

Many a time we have seen that people are just avoiding following traffic rules. Especially in metropolitan cities, people are more careless while driving vehicles which ultimately lead to road accidents.

The foremost causes of road accidents in such metropolitan areas can be narrow roads and roads with potholes.

Thus a road accident damages the lives of life and material. People should be very careful while driving or walking on the road.

It is also seen that walking on the road is also equally dangerous because of heavy traffic it can also be harmful to the people walking on the road. Hence, such people should walk on the side of the road or walk on footpaths.

Road Accident Incident:

Once I was coming back from my office at that time when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my co-worker and it was around 6 o’clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two groups of people but then after reaching the spot, we found that an accident had taken place.

After talking with the people present there, we came to know that a man who was crossing the road met with an accident while crossing the road. A truck passing by hit him leaving him with serious injuries. The man was lying on the ground bleeding and people were calling for an ambulance, plus they also informed the police about the incident.

Subsequently, the police arrived and caught the driver of the truck as people had already taken a hold of the driver. During the investigation with the driver, the cops came to know that the driver was drunk and was driving the vehicle. Later on, cops detained him and took the injured person to the nearest hospital, and took a statement from the injured person. The driver was released later based on the statement given by the person. That incident made me realize how precious our lives are and we must be very careful when we are walking on the road, on foot, or driving a car.

  Prevention from Road Accidents:

There are some most important points that every person should keep in mind while driving or walking or crossing the road. These points are as follows:

Drive within the prescribed speed limit.

Don’t drink or smoke while driving.

Follow all the traffic rules as they are for our safety.

Never use mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Always drive in the proper lane.

While riding a bike always wear a helmet.

Introduction

Types of car accidents, causes of car accidents, solutions to car accidents, works cited, source evaluation report.

Car accidents are unexpected events that occur to motor vehicles causing damage of the vehicles, structures, fatalities and even death of the people in the vehicles. According to a research done by the United Nations, the rate of growth of accidents in the world continue to increase with over two million deaths and thirty million injuries reported annually.

The studies revealed that over seventy percent of the deaths that resulted from road accidents occurred in developing countries. These imply that automobile accidents are a major problem in developing counties stretching from regions of pacific Asia to many parts of Sub Sahara Africa which contribute to over fifty percent of these accidents.

The numbers of vehicles continue increasing every year and governments are responding by constructing modern roads that can facilitate smooth transportation of goods and people so as to realize economic growth and reduce accidents which are increasing dramatically. In fact, car accident are ranked second to the major killer disease AIDS in terms of causing deaths and lose of property and resources. As a result, government policies to increase economic empowerment among the people are destructed by car accidents.

There are different classifications of road accidents depending on where the damage has been done on your vehicle. When a car hits another and there are minor damages on the vehicle, the accident is referred to as a rear impact car accident. An example of such an accident is when a vehicle hits another from the back due to failure of the brakes.

When a car hits another for the side, the type of accident is referred to as side impact accident. It usually occurs when a vehicle enters another vehicles lane as a result of an abrupt stop and thereby skidding at a right angle. According to Abdelane (20), in the United States, more than a third of the accidents in the US are side impact accidents. When a vehicle hits another car or object in front it is said to have undergone head on collision. This type of accident not only happens to cars but also trains.

This type of accident is commonly encountered by drunk drivers and those drivers who dose while driving. This type of accident is most likely to occur when a car enters a road from a wrong direction. When a car is involved in an accident and it turns in a manner that it lays on its side or roof, it is said to have had a roll over accident. This type of accident normally happens to tall tracks (Obenski, 3).

There are several factors that cause road accidents which comprise the following: majority of the accidents occur due the rise in the number of road users who don’t obey traffic rules, drivers who drive their cars carelessly and disobedience of the rules of traffic; the nature of the roads is also a major cause of road accidents.

The nature of infrastructure, construction of bridges which do not meet safety standards leading to defects on the road like potholes; improper maintenance of motor vehicles by the owners have caused many accidents. Some of the accidents that arise due to poor maintenance are due to failure of the breaks, improper alignment of the wheels thereby causing bursting, mechanical problems associated with the wheel, and failure of the headlights (Abdelane, 54).

Bad weather also contributes to the rise in the motor vehicle accidents. On a misty day, visibility on the road can be very bad. Cars on the road may end up colliding due to the failure of the drivers to notice vehicles in the front or back due to poor weather conditions. Other conditions of the weather that can lead to accidents growth is the presence of unexpected floods and ice on the roads.

These factors may make drivers notice their opponents late hence leading to collisions. Drivers may at times encounter distractions on the road as they drive, which may be within or outside the car. Some of the incidents arising from this error are when the attention of the driver is focused on a phone or a mirror or an interesting event outside the car while the car is in motion. It therefore follows that, anything causing the driver to concentrate outside the road is dangerous to the safety of the vehicle.

Sometimes, the designers of the roads may do a shoddy job in designing the road. This could be due to poor placements of the traffic controls like inappropriate placements of the traffic signs so that the view of the incoming traffic is blocked at risky corners of busy roads. In most cases, accidents arising from poor design are compensated by the government implying that both the owners of the vehicles and the State share the losses (Livneh, 99).

Brumitt (66) argued out that several measures can be adopted to ensure that there is reduction in the number of accidents. A lot of these measures have to do with government involvement in designing policies that guide road users but individual people must also take collective responsibility to avoid traffic offences.

Governments should establish bodies that oversee the overall implementation of set up policies like the National Road Safety Committee. The responsibility of the committee should target the following areas of concern: pile up pressure on all government departments and ministries to ensure that they give out guidelines that aim to minimize car accidents.

The committee should ensure that the lives of people are protected as well as protection of property from any losses arising from road accidents. Another effective control measure that can be taken to ensure that road accidents are reduced drastically is by keeping an accurate data base of the accidents and their causes so that it can be used to devise means of minimizing them. The records of the accident data system should be exact and consistent with assistance from established data collection systems.

By incorporating safety control measures in the school curriculum in the primary school level, a great deal will be reached in instilling safety measures to the younger generation so that they can acquire discipline of road safety measures right from initial stages of their lives to adulthood.

The authorities should ensure that only drivers who have been trained and certified drive on the road. In addition the authorities should ensure that people caught disobeying traffic rules are seriously punished by the law so as to instill discipline among the people (Brumitt, 122).

Finally, in order to attain excellent safety measures that will reduce accidents significantly, the government has to commit itself to provide funding to road safety, the private sector has to commit itself to offering technical assistance and people have to commit themselves to the safety measures.

Road accidents are becoming a major disaster in the world. According to Abdelane of Oxford University, “over one million people die and approximately thirty million get injuries as a result of road accidents in the world.” He also adds that “road accidents are identified as the second major killer of the human population after AIDS.”

Brumitt a research analyst at Bristol University, conducted a research and found out that road accidents are caused by road users who don’t obey traffic rules, poor infrastructure of the roads and defects on the vehicles such as break failure and tire bursts.

According to Obenski of the National Transportation Safety Board, several factors cause road accidents and there is no particular sequence: it can be due to over speeding, lack of attention, cell phones and other distracters, ignorance, lack of proper training and poor maintenance of the vehicles.

Livneh and his colleagues analyzed solutions of road accidents and suggested that “the effective solutions require the coordinated efforts of governments, international organizations and agencies, local authorities and good citizenship.” “Road accidents are unavoidable” says Livneh. “But risks of road accidents can be reduced by simple precautions and thinking ahead.”

I remember the day as if it were yesterday. My mother and I were in the car on our way to a family member’s house- just like any other day. We were driving down the main road in my town when the car was t-boned by another car that had run a red light. Our Honda Accord was smashed to pieces in the middle of the intersection. My mother was bleeding and the front of the car had crashed on top of my legs- I couldn’t feel either leg, but at the same time, tremendous pain shot through my body, not to mention fear. I looked over at the car that hit us and it was just as demolished- the front of the car was smoking; honestly, I feared that one of the vehicles might combust.

I tried to get out of my vehicle, but I could not open the door. The impact from the crash caused too much damage and my injured mother and I had no choice but to wait for the EMTs to arrive to help us get out of the vehicle.

Several cop cars, two ambulances and a fire truck rushed to the scene. The doors to our car were pried open with the jaws of life as the man who hit us was placed onto a gurney and lifted into the ambulance. I don’t know what his condition was, but if it even paled in comparison to the way his car looked after the accident, he was in serious medical condition.

When my mother was removed from our vehicle, she was treated by EMS workers for cuts and scrapes associated with the accident, but the EMS technicians said that she would be fine. I wasn’t as lucky.

When the doors on my side of the car were pried away, it revealed to the medical help that I had broken at least one of my legs, if not both. I was carefully removed from the vehicle and placed in a wheelchair then brought to the ambulance. The EMTs drove me to the local hospital where they took X-rays of both of my legs.

I waited anxiously in my bed for the results of the X-rays as the nurses cleaned up my cuts from the shattered glass. My mother sat by my bedside praying over me, but most of me was just thankful that I was the one in the hospital bed instead of her.

The doctor came into the room with my X-ray results. As an athlete and an overall busy person who relies on my legs heavily, I feared for the worst. Luckily, it could have been worse. The doctor revealed to me that I shattered my right knee but that my left leg did not break in the impact. Although I would have to undergo intense surgery and physical rehabilitation to repair my right knee, the doctor assured me that I would be walking fine again within several months. It wasn’t the greatest news I had ever received, but through my eyes, my mother and I were okay, and I was grateful.

The accident changed me. The surgery was difficult but I got through it with the support of my family. I may have walked out of the hospital with a broken right knee, but I also carried with me a greater appreciation for my family, as well as my life. In the accident I realized the preciousness of every moment and ultimately the car crash changed my life for the better.

Since the accident I have become closer to God, my family and my friends. I understand the importance of what true love is and what it means to savor each moment. My rehabilitation for my knee might have been a physical healing process, but I also went through an emotional rehabilitation, where my spirit healed from the accident.

I could have died that day. Worse, I could have lost my best friend and my mother that day. I carry the accident with me in my mind every day- it is my constant reminder to cherish life and appreciate every moment. I have a set of rosary beads that I know hang off the rear view window of my own car, as my personal reminder of that day. When I look at those beads, I think of my mother, I think of God, and I am truly grateful for being where I am today.

For a long time I struggled to look at my glass as half full after the accident. I wanted reasons for questions that had no answers. Why us? Why me? Why my knee? For months I took those questions and fostered them into hostility.

Today is different though. Today I carry my scars like badges of honor. Yes I did get in a horrible car accident, and here I am today. Clearly I wasn’t meant to die that day- and I know that ultimately I am on this earth to serve a larger purpose. Instead of being ashamed of my scars, today I look at them as markers of strength- proof that I can overcome anything. That accident may have broken my knee but it didn’t break my spirit. If anything, it made my spirit stronger and helped me get to where I am today.

“Can you name the truck with four-wheel drive, smells like a steak, and seats 35?”

Back in 1998, “The Simpsons” joked about the Canyonero, an SUV so big that they were obviously kidding. At that time, it was preposterous to think anyone would drive something that was “12 yards long, two lanes wide, 65 tons of American Pride.”

In 2024, that joke isn’t far from reality.

And our reality is one where more pedestrians and bicyclists are getting killed on U.S. streets than at any time in the past 45 years – over 1,000 bicyclists and 7,500 pedestrians in 2022 alone.

Vehicle size is a big part of this problem. A recent paper by urban economist Justin Tyndall found that increasing the front-end height of a vehicle by roughly 4 inches (10 centimeters) increases the chance of a pedestrian fatality by 22% . The risk increases by 31% for female pedestrians or those over 65 years, and by 81% for children.

It’s hard to argue with physics, so there is a certain logic in blaming cars for rising traffic deaths. In fact, if a bicyclist is hit by a pickup truck instead of a car, Tyndall suggests that they are 291% more likely to die.

Yet automakers have long asserted that if everyone simply followed the rules of the road, nobody would die. Vehicle size is irrelevant to that assertion.

My discipline, traffic engineering , acts similarly. We underestimate our role in perpetuating bad outcomes, as well as the role that better engineering can play in designing safer communities and streets.

A bicycle, painted white and decorated with flowers, attached to a street pole at an urban intersection.

Millions of road deaths

How bad are the bad outcomes? The U.S. has been tracking car-related road deaths since 1899. As a country, we hit the threshold of 1 million cumulative deaths in 1953, 2 million in 1975 and 3 million in 1998. While the past several years of data have not yet been released, I estimate that the U.S. topped 4 million total road deaths sometime in the spring of 2024.

How many of those are pedestrians and bicyclists? Analysts didn’t do a great job of separating out the pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the early years , but based on later trends, my estimate is that some 930,000 pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed by automobiles in the U.S.

How many of those deaths do we blame on big cars or bad streets? The answer is, very few.

As I show in my new book, “ Killed by a Traffic Engineer: Shattering the Delusion that Science Underlies our Transportation System ,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls road user error the “ critical reason” behind 94% of crashes, injuries and deaths .

Crash data backs that up.

Police investigate crashes and inevitably look to see which road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, are most at fault. It’s easy to do because in almost any crash, road user error appears to be the obvious problem.

This approach helps insurance companies figure out who needs to pay. It also helps automakers and traffic engineers rationalize away all these deaths. Everyone – except the families and friends of these 4 million victims – goes to sleep at night feeling good that bad-behaving road users just need more education or better enforcement.

But road user error only scratches the surface of the problem.

Who creates dangerous streets?

When traffic engineers build an overly wide street that looks more like a freeway , and a speeding driver in a Canyonero crashes, subsequent crash data blames the driver for speeding.

When traffic engineers provide lousy crosswalks separated by long distances , and someone jaywalks and gets hit by that speeding Canyonero driver, one or both of these road users will be blamed in the official crash report.

And when automakers build gargantuan vehicles that can easily go double the speed limit and fill them with distracting touchscreens , crash data will still blame the road users for almost anything bad that happens.

These are the sorts of systemic conditions that lead to many so-called road user errors. Look just below the surface, though, and it becomes clear that many human errors represent the typical, rational behaviors of typical, rational road users given the transportation system and vehicle options we put in front of them.

Look more deeply, and you can start to see how our underlying crash data gives everyone a pass but the road users themselves. Everyone wants a data-driven approach to road safety, but today’s standard view of crash data lets automakers, insurance companies and policymakers who shape vehicle safety standards off the hook for embiggening these ever-larger cars and light-duty trucks.

It also absolves traffic engineers, planners and policymakers of blame for creating a transportation system where for most Americans, the only rational choice for getting around is a car .

Understanding road behavior

Automakers want to sell cars and make money. And if bigger SUVs seem safer to potential customers, while also being much more profitable , it’s easy to see how interactions between road users and car companies – making seemingly rational decisions – have devolved into an SUV arms race.

Even though these same vehicles are less safe for pedestrians, bicyclists and those in opposing vehicles , the current data-driven approach to road safety misses that part of the story.

This can’t all be fixed at once. But by pursuing business as usual, automakers and traffic engineers will continue wasting money on victim-blaming campaigns or billboards placed high over a road telling drivers to pay attention to the road .

A better starting point would be remaking the U.S.’s allegedly data-driven approach to road safety by reinventing our understanding of the crash data that informs it all.

The key is starting to ask why. Why did these road users act as they did? Why didn’t they follow the rules that were laid out for them? Bad road user behavior shouldn’t be excused, but a bit of digging below the surface of crash data unearths a completely different story.

Figuring out which road user is most at fault may be useful for law enforcement and insurance companies, but it doesn’t give transportation engineers, planners, policymakers or automakers much insight into what they can do better. Even worse, it has kept them from realizing that they might be doing anything wrong.

What to do immediately after a car accident

After leaving the scene of a car accident, after the crash: your essential car accident checklist.

  • Even if you don't plan to file an insurance claim, always get a police report after a car accident.
  • Do not admit fault at the scene of a car accident. Work directly with insurance carriers.
  • If you have questions, even if it's not about your accident, talk to your insurance agent.

Many people have fears of flying, boats, etc. But in truth, car accidents are one of the most common ways to be injured or die. By definition, accidents happen unexpectedly and often at the most inconvenient times.

U.S. drivers are involved in car accidents every six minutes, a rate four times higher than in any other country. In an ideal world, everybody would have full coverage car insurance to protect themselves along with their passengers and other drivers. But, even with the best full-coverage auto insurance plan, things can get complicated on the road if you don't know what to do after a car accident.

Whether you're rear-ended during rush hour or spin out on an icy road, remaining calm in the aftermath is essential. Amidst the chaos, your primary goal following an accident is to avoid further injury or property damage.

"When your nerves are working overtime, it's easy to forget what you should do immediately following a car accident," licensed insurance agent Ashley M. Hunter , founding partner of A. Hunter & Company tells Insider. She suggests the following steps to ensure a smooth, hassle-free outcome after an accident.

Step 1: Safety first

Immediately following an accident, you may be in shock. So take a minute if you need to, but get yourself out of the road as quickly as possible. After a highway accident, be aware of your surroundings and position your vehicle well out of the way of moving traffic.

After a serious accident, drivers may not be able to move their car at all. In this case, be aware of your surroundings while you exit your vehicle and move to safety while you await assistance. In either case, turn your hazard lights on to alert other drivers of the accident.

If you or your passengers appear to have been injured, contact emergency services immediately. Individuals experiencing shock may not realize they are hurt. Medical professionals are best suited to assess injuries and provide documentation if needed for insurance purposes.

Dial 911 to dispatch the police to your location. Even in the case of minor accidents, having a police report on record can expedite the auto insurance claims process . More importantly, it protects you by putting the details on paper immediately. No matter how minor, driving away from the scene of an accident is a misdemeanor offense in many states and may carry hit-and-run charges.

Step 2: Exchange information

Once it is safe, exchange information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident: take a photo of their driver's license and insurance identification card. That's the only interaction you need. Discussing the specifics of the accident, particularly who may have been at fault can result in statements used against you.

Once the police arrive, document as much information about the accident as you can remember and note the responding officer's name and badge number. If you have a dash cam, you can provide the footage to your insurance company as needed. The police may also want a copy after a severe accident.

Step 3: Document everything

With safety in mind, take as many photos of your car and the accident as possible. Any cars involved and the damage is important. However, you should also take pictures of the surrounding accident site and any skid marks on the road. The idea is to give a third party an objective picture of what happened.

Photo documentation is the best way to prove the damage to your vehicle after the accident, especially if you have an adjuster who wants to handle your claim over the phone.

Step 4: Talk to witnesses

If there are any witnesses, such as pedestrians, other motorists, or passengers, ask for their names and contact information.

Step 5: Don't admit fault

Car accidents can be stressful, and bumps may arise afterward. Once you've followed the steps outlined above, leave it to the professionals. Even if you think you were at fault, avoid making statements to anyone other than the police or your insurance company.

"If there are any disputes as to who hit who, or ran into what, (the insurance company) will consult the police report, but they will also look at photos taken at the scene of the accident, which is why photographs are really your friend," says Hunter.

In addition, things like dash cams and other technology can be a saving grace after a car accident. Many newer vehicles also have onboard safety features that automatically dispatch the police and/or emergency services upon impact.

The other driver may also try to contact you, but communicating solely via insurers and other official parties can reduce the likelihood of complications. Unsurprisingly, Hunter is emphatic about one thing: Never attempt to negotiate a car accident or claim directly with another driver.

"The moment you accept payment from a third party that is not your insurer, you void your claim with the insurer, and they are no longer obligated to assist you," she says, underscoring the peace of mind that comes with paying a monthly premium for an automobile insurance policy.

Step 1: File a police report

If the police can't come to the scene, you should still file a police report, especially if there were injuries, significant damage, or a hit-and-run. You could do this by visiting your local police station or filing a report on their website.

While the police report is hardly a be-all, end-all document, it will help file your insurance claim and determine fault. In some cases, it will also nail down the damage done. For example, if you rear-end someone in traffic, they cannot later claim you damaged the front and side of their vehicle.

Similarly, if they rear-ended your vehicle, a police report would prevent them from changing their story later. Therefore, a report should be filed even if you don't intend to file a claim (i.e. if the damage is minor or the at-fault party is willing to pay in cash).

Step 2:  Notify your insurance company

Regardless of who is at fault, notify your insurance professional you've been in a car accident as soon as possible. While this does not need to happen from the scene of the accident, it should happen within 24 hours (or, in the case of serious injury, as soon as you can).

Each insurance company is different. Laws also vary state-by-state , with a few states operating as "no-fault" while others apply an at-fault standard. Essentially, state laws tell you which insurer will cover medical bills. In a no-fault state, each insurance company covers its customers. In at-fault states, a judgment has to be made based on evidence provided, and the responsible party's insurance will cover medical costs associated with the accident.

In the days (and sometimes weeks) following your accident, you may be contacted by various individuals, from a claims adjuster with your insurance company to a representative from the other driver's insurance company or the police.

Some insurance companies will direct you to a mobile app to jumpstart your claim. Others will advise you over the phone on the next steps. If you are not at fault and the other party is not disputing anything, going straight to their insurance may save you some hassle as the cost of car insurance may increase anytime your insurer receives a claim.

Step 3: Seek medical attention

If you or your passengers sustain injuries (even minor ones) during the car accident, visit a medical professional. Even if you feel fine initially, some injuries, like whiplash or head concussions, may take up to a few days to appear.

Step 4: Gather documentation

Your insurer may have different requirements when filing a claim, but most insurers will request the following documentation and information:

  • Names, contact, insurance, and vehicle information of all parties involved
  • Location, time of day, and weather conditions when the accident occurred
  • Photos of vehicle damage
  • Names and badge numbers of any officers at the scene
  • A copy of the police report (if applicable)

If you've paid for repairs, medical expenses, or other emergency services out-of-pocket, your insurer will require you to supply receipts for reimbursement.

Step 5: Consider legal counsel

A car accident that involves severe injuries or fatalities may require a lawyer, especially when liability is in question. If your insurance company is denying your claim or offering a low settlement, a lawyer can ensure you receive proper compensation.

Knowing what to do after a car accident can help protect yourself legally and financially. Regardless of the specifics surrounding your car accident, staying calm and following these expert tips is the best way to ensure a favorable outcome. It can also help you avoid unnecessary and stressful situations.

"The last thing you want to think about is the little things, like having to pay the tow company," says Hunter of why connecting with your insurance professional as soon as possible following an accident is paramount.

Insurance professionals will help you navigate the aftermath, including securing a rental car if needed. Then, you'll be back on the road (with fewer things to worry about).

What to do after a car accident FAQs

Calling the police is legally required in some situations (e.g., injuries, significant property damage, hit-and-run). If you're unsure, err on the side of caution and call the police — they will usually let you know if their presence isn't needed. When the police arrive, they will create an official accident report to assist with your insurance claim.

You should avoid talking to the other driver's insurance company without your insurer's advisement. Your insurance company should be your first point of contact. They will handle communication and negotiation on your behalf.

If the other driver doesn't have insurance, your uninsured motorist coverage should protect you.

The driver told investigators that his car accelerated abruptly and unintentionally, reported South Korean media.

Senior police officer Jung Yong Woo told local reporters the suspect's car would be sent to the country’s forensic agency for an examination. Authorities are considering whether to seek a formal arrest warrant for the driver, Jung said.

Officials said Tuesday that tests showed the driver wasn’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The suspect has been hospitalized but authorities refused to disclose his identity and contact information, citing privacy regulations. South Korean media said he was a bus driver in his late 60s from Ansan, a city just south of Seoul, with 40 years of driving experience.

How much does car insurance go up after an accident?

Car insurance rates typically go up after an accident, especially if you were at fault..

thumbnail

There were nearly 6 million car accidents in the U.S. in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . Accident rates have been increasing in recent years and experts point to everything from more distracted driving to rising temperatures caused by climate change .

After the initial shock wears off, the real surprise after a collision can be how much your insurance premiums go up — even if you weren't at fault.  Your driving record is only one factor determining how much you pay for car insurance, but even a single accident can have a major impact.

Shop for the best car insurance rates

The amount your insurance goes up after an accident depends on several factors including your insurance company, the state you live in, the car you drive, the severity of the collision and whether the accident was your fault.

"Generally speaking, your rate will go up 10% or less if you're not at fault," said Brian Moody, executive editor at Kelley's Blue Book. "If you are at fault, it's closer to 45%."

Not all carriers are the same, though: Allstate and Erie raise rates less than 30% on average after an at-fault accident, according to Bankrate analysis of Quadrant Information Services data,

Allstate Auto Insurance

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Allstate offers auto insurance customers a total of 14 discounts in addition to a pay-per-mile car insurance program. It offers quotes by phone, through an agent, or online. The company also offers a number of other insurance products to bundle your coverage and save.

Erie Auto Insurance

Erie Insurance offers auto insurance for many different situations and affordable premiums. Several different coverages allow you to customize your policy.

How long will an accident affect my car insurance?

On average, a car accident will remain on your record for three to five years, according to Moody. The exact amount varies by state, however: It's one year in Pennsylvania, while in Massachusetts, it's six.

Insurance companies can review your driving record by checking your Motor Vehicle Report . It's generated by your state's Department of Motor Vehicles and lists any moving violations, traffic tickets and accidents. If you made a claim for repairs stemming from an accident, it would appear on your CLUE report .

Will my rate go up even if the accident wasn't my fault?

Any accident that is reported to either the police or your insurance company could result in a premium increase, according to Mark Friedlander, communications director with the Insurance Information Institute. Insurers assess risk, not blame. And, statistically, the more crashes you're in, the more likely you are to have another in the future.

A few states , including Oklahoma and California, do prohibit insurance companies from raising rates after a not-at-fault accident.

How to prevent a rate increase after an accident?

If you're involved in a one-car accident or a minor fender-bender with another driver, you may be tempted to pay for repairs out of pocket rather than report it to your insurance company.

While this may keep your rates from increasing, if your provider finds out about it later, it could be considered non-disclosure and could result in your policy being invalidated. In some cases, you don't have a choice: In New York , for example, an accident report must be filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles if damages exceed $1,000 or if anyone is injured.

Many auto insurance companies offer accident forgiveness, however, either as part of a standard policy or as a separate rider you can purchase. This prevents insurance rates from going up after an accident.

"They will typically forgive your first at-fault accident, so your rate won't increase because of the incident," said Friedlander.

Each insurer handles accident forgiveness differently: With Progressive , a small claim (under $500) won't raise your rates in most states. If you remain accident-free for five years, even a larger accident can be forgiven.

Read our Progressive auto insurance review

You can also purchase additional accident forgiveness benefits when you start or renew your Progressive auto policy and have one eligible accident forgiven per policy period.

Progressive Auto Insurance

Progressive offers a number of lines of insurance to allow for bundling, and convenient tools to help you keep your coverage in your budget.

Read our Progressive Auto Insurance review.

While accident forgiveness comes standard with certain policies, a carrier may charge extra for it — as much as 9% of your premium. That's considerably less than the 40% bump you could face after a crash, but it's wasted money if you don't use the benefit. There are also states, like California, that don't allow insurers to offer accident forgiveness.

How can I lower my insurance after an accident?

If your rates do go up after a crash, there are several ways you can work at lowering them.

Make changes to your coverage

The first thing to do if you're hit with an accident surcharge is to see where else in your coverage you can make cuts.

If your state doesn't require personal injury protection or medical payment coverage , you may decide to drop them. And if you have an older car, especially one that is fully paid for, you could consider dropping collision or comprehensive insurance .   USAA has the best rates for liability insurance, but is only available to veterans and military families. Among national carriers, State Farm  has some of the cheapest minimum coverage policies.

USAA Auto Insurance

USAA's auto insurance is limited to service members, veterans and their families but it is available in all 50 states and Washington D.C. In addition to low rates and outstanding customer service, it has coverage options for unique circumstances, such as active deployment.

State Farm Auto Insurance

State farm is one of the largest auto insurers based on market share and has an excellent reputation for customer satisfaction. It offers 13 discounts, including ones for safe driving and young drivers.

Read our State Farm Auto Insurance review.

Another option is Raising your deductible , which usually lowers your monthly premium: Upping your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce the cost of full coverage by up to 30%, according to the Insurance Information Institute , while upping it to $1,000 could save you 40% or more.

Shop for new insurance

"The market is so competitive right now, you don't need to be stuck with your current insurer if they hit you with a high accident surcharge," said Friedlander. "You'll get different quotes from different companies, no matter what your driving record is like. It doesn't cost you anything — shopping for insurance is free."

Geico and Progressive are among our top choices for high-risk drivers, with lower-than-average rates for people with at-fault accidents on their records.

Geico Auto Insurance

Geico coverage and services are available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and there are 16 different types of discounts available. In addition to the standard coverage options, Geico offers various optional add-ons, such as emergency roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement and mechanical breakdown insurance.

Read our Geico Auto Insurance review.

Look for discounts

"If someone has an accident surcharge, they should try to take advantage of as many discounts as possible," said Friedlander. "There are a lot of different programs you can qualify for [and] you can get significant savings."

Farmers Insurance has 23 discounts available to auto insurance customers, the most of any provider we've reviewed. Not all discounts are available in every state, though, and some can't be combined.

Farmers Auto Insurance

Farmers Insurance offers a whopping 23 discounts for auto insurance and issue policies in every state except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Common discounts include:

  • Bundling discount: Getting your auto insurance from the same company that handles your homeowners, life or other policy will often score you a discount. You can save up to 20% by bundling home and auto with Farmers or Nationwide , while Amica says customers can save up to 30%.

Amica Auto Insurance

Amica offers a variety of auto insurance policies to fit your coverage needs. The company also offers a total of 18 discounts, including discounts for bundling and for students.

  • Safety device discount : Airbags, anti-lock brakes, automatic seatbelts, daytime running lights and other protective equipment can save you as much as 23% with Geico.
  • Defensive driver discount :  If you've been in an accident, a driver's ed course is a good way to prevent another one. American Family Insurance offers drivers 55 and older up to 10% for completing an approved class.

American Family Auto Insurance

American Family offers affordable car insurance with more than a dozen discounts to further lower your premium. While its not available nationwide, American Family offers quotes online or through an agent, depending on your preference.

  • Paperless billing: Going online is an easy way to save on insurance. Auto-Owners will offer you a discount if you go paperless and set up automatic payments.

Auto-Owners Insurance

Auto-Owners offers affordable premiums with high customer satisfaction ratings. There are 12 different types of discounts available, as well as various other types of insurance besides auto.

Improve your credit

Actuarial studies suggest that how people manage their finances is a good indicator of how likely they are to file an insurance claim. So in most states, insurance companies use your credit history to determine your rates. (California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Utah prohibit or restrict the use of credit-based insurance scores.) Paying credit card bills and other debts on time and in full and reducing the amount of credit you're using are simple ways to improve your score and lower your premiums.

Buy a different car

After an accident, trading your vehicle for a less flashy ride could easily lower your rates.

"Insurers base your premiums on how much it costs to repair your car," says Moody. "Even if your insurance has gone up due to an accident, your overall rate should be lower because the insurance company's risk has been minimized."

Get the best rate for a car loan

How much your rates will increase depends on your age, driving history, where you live and other factors.

How long does an accident stay on your driving record?

Insurance companies generally only look at the past three to five years, though your state may keep a record of your driving for considerably longer. In New York, for example, an accident involving intoxicated driving can stay on your record permanently.

What is accident forgiveness?

Many leading insurance companies will let you have one accident without raising your premiums. You may need to go a certain number of years without a crash to earn accident forgiveness, or there may be a dollar amount maximum for damages in order for the incident to be "forgiven."

Will my insurance go up if the accident wasn't my fault?

A not-at-fault accident could cause your rates to increase, though not as much as if you were responsible. Factors include where you live, the kind of insurance you have, the extent of the damage and if the other driver was fully insured. Some states bar insurers from hiking rates following a not-at-fault accident.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A driver whose car struck pedestrians waiting at a crowded intersection in South Korea’s capital, killing nine people, will be investigated on allegations of accidental homicide, police said Tuesday.

The car hit several people Monday night in central Seoul, after reportedly going in the wrong direction and colliding with two other cars. Six other people were injured, including the driver who was detained.

The driver told investigators that his car accelerated abruptly and unintentionally, reported South Korean media.

Senior police officer Jung Yong Woo told local reporters the suspect’s car would be sent to the country’s forensic agency for an examination.
