What makes a good business plan? 

Results. 

Goals met, milestones achieved, objectives accomplished. 

Forget the old-fashioned thinking of evaluating plans like a college term paper. You don’t get points for writing style, formatting, or completeness. 

A good business plan shows you can get results. But what does that look like in practice? What should you focus on when writing? 

Well, I’ve narrowed it down to 10 key qualities. Qualities I’ve found make for the best business plans and, ultimately, more successful businesses.

  • 1. It fits the business need

You have to consider why you need a business plan in the first place. Business plans aren’t one-size-fits-all . Form follows function. 

Not all business plans have to be pretty

Most business plans exist to help run the company , not to be presented to outsiders. They don’t have to be polished and formal; they just need to work for you and be easy to review, revise, and run your business. 

Write it for your audience

A business plan being shown to outside investors does, in fact, have to look good, read well, and be presentation-worthy. It needs good summaries and descriptions to validate the idea, the team, the market, and other key elements. It should also describe how you intend to exit in the future. 

The business plan to support a loan application also needs summaries and descriptions. They need to reassure a lender about risk, usually with assets, often with the owner’s personal financial statements, and past performance on credit ratings and debt repayment. 

2. It’s realistic and can be implemented

The second measure of a good or bad business plan is realism. You don’t get points for ideas that can’t be implemented. Setting unrealistic and unachievable goals is a waste of time.  

For example, a brilliantly written, beautifully formatted, and excellently researched business plan for a product that can’t be built is not a good business plan. A plan that requires millions of dollars of investment but lacks a management team to get that investment is not a good plan. 

A plan that ignores a fatal flaw is not a good plan. Make sure your goals are achievable.

For example, if you share a financial forecast , is it realistic? Based on current revenue, can you realistically achieve your goals? If you’ve brought in $200,000 annually in revenue for the last few years, don’t expect to jump to $400,000 in the next quarter. 

Make a plan for increasing revenue—but in increments that make sense and are achievable.  Look at changes in revenue drivers, such as traffic, web views, sales per store, etc. Get into the details. 

Link your projected increases to actions and events, such as milestones, promotions, a new product launch, or a new location. Think of the power of cause and effect. Increases are more real when they result from activities and events, not just out of the blue.

3. It’s specific and measurable

Every business plan should include tasks, deadlines, dates, forecasts, budgets, and metrics. These will make your plan measurable .

Ask yourself: 

  • How will we know if we followed the plan?
  • How will we track actual results and compare them against the plan? 
  • How will we know if we are on track or not?

While high-end strategy can be fun to develop, good planning depends more on what, when, who, and how much. These are the concrete specifics that offer visibility into the real progress toward your goals. 

  • 4. It clearly defines responsibilities for implementation

You have to be able to identify a single person who will be responsible for every significant task and function. A task that doesn’t have an owner isn’t likely to be implemented. 

You should be able to review a business plan and recognize who is responsible for implementation at every point. If you don’t, you have a gap and need to fill it.

Avoid sharing responsibilities between different people or groups because this reduces accountability. Match every important task or function with one person in charge and accountable. 

Again, if you don’t have that person right now, don’t just ignore it. Mention in your plan that it’s a known gap, when you intend to address it, and if you have anyone in mind.

  • 5. It clearly identifies assumptions

Business plans are always wrong. They’re written by humans who are making guesses about the future. Humans tend to guess wrong. 

So, your business plan must clearly address assumptions upfront. 

Did you assume the company will increase productivity by 10% this year because it did the last few years? Do you assume the market won’t change much? No new competitors? Do you assume that your technology will reduce your direct costs? Do you assume growth in your social media impact? 

Share your thoughts on why this is achievable based on past factors, but also clarify that you’re guessing. 

You may need to update or refine these areas of your plan after a few months. By flagging them as assumptions from the start, you won’t be surprised when you over or underperform and are prepared to revisit and adjust. 

  • 6. It defines strategy and tactics

In the real world, a small business can’t do everything, so it has to do the right things. You can’t please everybody, so you need to please the right people. That is the essence of strategy. 

A strategy defines what problem you solve, the solution you offer, the relevant target market, and why you are the one to do it. 

How you treat strategy in a business plan depends on the nature and objective of the plan itself. 

Strategy can be as simple as a bulleted list taking up a page or two of a lean business plan. It could also be one or more slides in a pitch deck or a more detailed formal chapter of a traditional plan. 

The plan defines the strategy so you can refer back to it as often as necessary. It might be there for management value or to explain to outsiders. And who will be using or looking at it will dictate how it needs to be presented. 

Get into the details

Strategy is useless without the key tactics . 

Tactics might be pricing, distribution, marketing, financial plans, sales plans, etc. Make sure the tactics you choose are directly in service of executing your strategic goal. 

You should be able to explain how every action you take relates to your overall business strategy. And don’t leave tactics without developing concrete specifics, milestones, budgets, tasks, responsibility assignments, tracking, and how you’ll follow up. 

  • 7. It incorporates a monthly review schedule

Good business plans include timing and schedules for regular updates. You anticipate the need for a regular monthly review . 

You know your plan is not perfect and needs to be revised to accommodate ongoing results. Real business plans need to be kept fresh. 

  • 8. It includes essential numbers

Sure, there is a place for a simpler one-page business plan and other shorter plan summaries. Investors, banks, and strategic partners might want that kind of simple summary to quickly understand your business. 

But real business runs on cash, and keeping your business in cash requires thorough financial planning. 

You need budgets and tracking. 

So a real business plan includes essential financial projections , including sales, costs of sales, expenses, profits, and cash flow.  

You track sales, costs, and expenses to monitor related budgets and progress toward goals. You also track cash flow factors such as accounts receivable and inventory to look for indications of change that might require management actions. 

Remember that management is about constant course corrections. This is why you include a regular monthly review of the plan against your actual results. 

9. It’s clear and simple

Keep it simple. 

Most businesses need and will use a lean business plan , which can be just a few pages of bullet point lists (strategy, tactics, milestones, etc.) and tables (sales, costs, expenses, profits, cash flow). 

Don’t use a business plan to show off. 

A business plan is about the business, not the science. Avoid industry jargon and long technical explanations. Investors and bankers will have experts review your details, but they don’t expect to find them all in the plan document.

  • 10. Easy to communicate with the right people

Again, form follows function. 

For example, an internal plan to manage your business is not lengthy and formal. Instead, it links key elements together to make them easy for team members to access and work on. 

If you do have to present the plan, make the text business-appropriate.

Take the time and trouble to avoid typos and spelling errors. Use outlines and summaries to make the more important points easy to find. Make font sizes clean and large enough for older readers. Have somebody else read it before you finish. 

This makes it professional and shows respect for the reader and the business situation. It should also be presented in a format that lends itself to sharing, like a website or PDF document. 

Security is important too. Is the plan safely locked away from the prying eyes of outsiders? Most business plans live online or on local networks where team members can access and manage.  Some are online, and outsiders can see them. In both cases, use security safeguards. 

Ongoing planning process: it’s about the management it causes

U.S. president and military strategist Dwight D. Eisenhower is often quoted as saying: 

The plan is useless, but planning is essential .

The key point is that no clear criteria exists to tell you if a business plan is good or bad. 

What makes a business plan useful (good) is the management that comes out of it. The regular reviews and revisions that help you stay on track. That’s good planning , as opposed to just a good plan.

1. Executive summary

Your executive summary is a page that gives a high-level overview of the rest of your business plan. While it appears at the beginning, it’s easiest to write this section last, as there are details further in the report you’ll need to include here.

In this free business plan template , the executive summary is four paragraphs and takes a little over half a page. It clearly and efficiently communicates what the business does and what it plans to do, including its business model and target customers.

2. Company description

You might repurpose your company description elsewhere, like on your About page , social media profile pages, or other properties that require a boilerplate description of your small business.

Soap brand ORRIS has a blurb on its About page that could easily be repurposed for the company description section of its business plan.

You can also go more in-depth with your company overview and include the following sections, like in this business plan example for Paw Print Post:

Business structure

This section outlines how you registered your business —as an LLC , sole proprietorship, corporation, or other business type : “Paw Print Post will operate as a sole proprietorship run by the owner, Jane Matthews.”

Nature of the business

“Paw Print Post sells unique, one-of-a-kind digitally printed cards that are customized with a pet’s unique paw prints.”

“Paw Print Post operates primarily in the pet industry and sells goods that could also be categorized as part of the greeting card industry.”

Background information

“Jane Matthews, the founder of Paw Print Post, has a long history in the pet industry and working with animals, and was recently trained as a graphic designer. She’s combining those two loves to capture a niche in the market: unique greeting cards customized with a pet’s paw prints, without needing to resort to the traditional (and messy) options of casting your pet’s prints in plaster or using pet-safe ink to have them stamp their ’signature.’”

Business objectives

“Jane will have Paw Print Post ready to launch at the Big Important Pet Expo in Toronto to get the word out among industry players and consumers alike. After two years in business, Jane aims to drive $150,000 in annual revenue from the sale of Paw Print Post’s signature greeting cards and to have expanded into two new product categories.”

“Jane Matthews is the sole full-time employee of Paw Print Post but hires contractors as needed to support her workflow and fill gaps in her skill set. Notably, Paw Print Post has a standing contract for five hours a week of virtual assistant support with Virtual Assistants Pro.”

Your mission statement may also make an appearance here. Passionfruit shares its mission statement on its company website, and it would also work well in its example business plan.

3. Market analysis

The market analysis consists of research about supply and demand , your target demographics, industry trends, and the competitive landscape. You might run a SWOT analysis and include that in your business plan. 

Here’s an example SWOT analysis for an online tailored-shirt business:

You’ll also want to do a competitive analysis as part of the market research component of your business plan. This will tell you which businesses you’re up against and give you ideas on how to differentiate your brand. A broad competitive analysis might include:

  • Target customers
  • Unique value proposition , or what sets the products apart
  • Sales pitch
  • Price points for products
  • Shipping policy

4. Products and services

This section of your business plan describes your offerings—which products and services do you sell to your customers? Here’s an example for Paw Print Post that explains its line of custom greeting cards, along with details on what makes its products unique.

5. Marketing plan

It’s always a good idea to develop a marketing plan before you launch your business. Your marketing plan shows how you’ll get the word out about your business, and it’s an essential component of your business plan as well.

The Paw Print Post focuses on four Ps: price, product, promotion, and place. However, you can take a different approach with your marketing plan. Maybe you can pull from your existing marketing strategy , or maybe you break it down by the different marketing channels. Whatever approach you take, your marketing plan should describe how you intend to promote your business and offerings to potential customers.

6. Logistics and operations plan

The Paw Print Post example considered suppliers, production, facilities, equipment, shipping and fulfillment, and inventory. This includes any raw materials needed to produce the products.

7. Financial plan

The financial plan provides a breakdown of sales, revenue, profit, expenses, and other relevant financial metrics related to funding and profiting from your business.

Ecommerce brand Nature’s Candy’s financial plan breaks down predicted revenue, expenses, and net profit in graphs.

It then dives deeper into the financials to include:

  • Funding needs
  • Projected profit-and-loss statement
  • Projected balance sheet
  • Projected cash-flow statement

You can use a financial plan spreadsheet to build your own financial statements, including income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement.

8. Customer segmentation

Customer segmentation means dividing your target market into groups based on specific characteristics. These characteristics can be demographics, psychographics, behavior, or geography. Your business plan will provide detailed information on each segment, like its size and growth potential, so you can show why they are valuable to your business. 

Airsign , an eco-friendly vacuum cleaner company, faced the challenge of building a sustainable business model in the competitive home appliance market. They identified three key customer personas to target:

  • Design-oriented urban dwellers
  • Millennials moving to suburbs
  • Older consumers seeking high-quality appliances

The company utilized Shopify’s customer segmentation tools to gain insights and take action to target them. Airsign created targeted segments for specific marketing initiatives.

9. Appendix

The appendix provides in-depth data, research, or documentation that supports the claims and projections made in the main business plan. It includes things like market research, finance, résumés, product specs, and legal documents. 

Readers can access detailed info in the appendix, but the main plan stays focused and easy to read. Here’s an example from a fictional clothing brand called Bloom:

This lean business plan is meant to be high level and easy to understand at a glance. You’ll want to include all of the same sections in one-page business plan, but make sure they’re truncated and summarized:

  • Executive summary: truncated
  • Market analysis: summarized
  • Products and services: summarized
  • Marketing plan: summarized
  • Logistics and operations plan: summarized
  • Financials: summarized

A startup business plan is for a new business. Typically, these plans are developed and shared to secure funding . As such, there’s a bigger focus on the financials, as well as on other sections that determine viability of your business idea—market research, for example:

  • Market analysis: in-depth
  • Financials: in-depth

Your internal business plan is meant to keep your team on the same page and aligned toward the same goal:

A strategic, or growth, business plan is a big-picture, long-term look at your business. As such, the forecasts tend to look further into the future, and growth and revenue goals may be higher. Essentially, you want to use all the sections you would in a normal business plan and build upon each:

Nonprofit business plans are used to attract donors, grants, and partnerships. They focus on what their mission is, how they measure success, and how they get funded. You’ll want to include the following sections in addition to a traditional business plan:

  • Organization description
  • Need statement
  • Programs and services
  • Fundraising plan
  • Partnerships and collaborations
  • Impact measurement

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a document that contains the operational and financial plan of a business, and details how its objectives will be achieved. It serves as a road map for the business and can be used when pitching investors or financial institutions for debt or equity financing .

A business plan should follow a standard format and contain all the important business plan elements. Typically, it should present whatever information an investor or financial institution expects to see before providing financing to a business.

Contents of a Business Plan

A business plan should be structured in a way that it contains all the important information that investors are looking for. Here are the main sections of a business plan:

1. Title Page

The title page captures the legal information of the business, which includes the registered business name, physical address, phone number, email address, date, and the company logo.

2. Executive Summary

The executive summary is the most important section because it is the first section that investors and bankers see when they open the business plan. It provides a summary of the entire business plan. It should be written last to ensure that you don’t leave any details out. It must be short and to the point, and it should capture the reader’s attention. The executive summary should not exceed two pages.

3. Industry Overview

The industry overview section provides information about the specific industry that the business operates in. Some of the information provided in this section includes major competitors, industry trends, and estimated revenues. It also shows the company’s position in the industry and how it will compete in the market against other major players.

4. Market Analysis and Competition

The market analysis section details the target market for the company’s product offerings. This section confirms that the company understands the market and that it has already analyzed the existing market to determine that there is adequate demand to support its proposed business model.

Market analysis includes information about the target market’s demographics , geographical location, consumer behavior, and market needs. The company can present numbers and sources to give an overview of the target market size.

A business can choose to consolidate the market analysis and competition analysis into one section or present them as two separate sections.

5. Sales and Marketing Plan

The sales and marketing plan details how the company plans to sell its products to the target market. It attempts to present the business’s unique selling proposition and the channels it will use to sell its goods and services. It details the company’s advertising and promotion activities, pricing strategy, sales and distribution methods, and after-sales support.

6. Management Plan

The management plan provides an outline of the company’s legal structure, its management team, and internal and external human resource requirements. It should list the number of employees that will be needed and the remuneration to be paid to each of the employees.

Any external professionals, such as lawyers, valuers, architects, and consultants, that the company will need should also be included. If the company intends to use the business plan to source funding from investors, it should list the members of the executive team, as well as the members of the advisory board.

7. Operating Plan

The operating plan provides an overview of the company’s physical requirements, such as office space, machinery, labor, supplies, and inventory . For a business that requires custom warehouses and specialized equipment, the operating plan will be more detailed, as compared to, say, a home-based consulting business. If the business plan is for a manufacturing company, it will include information on raw material requirements and the supply chain.

8. Financial Plan

The financial plan is an important section that will often determine whether the business will obtain required financing from financial institutions, investors, or venture capitalists. It should demonstrate that the proposed business is viable and will return enough revenues to be able to meet its financial obligations. Some of the information contained in the financial plan includes a projected income statement , balance sheet, and cash flow.

9. Appendices and Exhibits

The appendices and exhibits part is the last section of a business plan. It includes any additional information that banks and investors may be interested in or that adds credibility to the business. Some of the information that may be included in the appendices section includes office/building plans, detailed market research , products/services offering information, marketing brochures, and credit histories of the promoters.

Here is a basic template that any business can use when developing its business plan:

Section 1: Executive Summary

  • Present the company’s mission.
  • Describe the company’s product and/or service offerings.
  • Give a summary of the target market and its demographics.
  • Summarize the industry competition and how the company will capture a share of the available market.
  • Give a summary of the operational plan, such as inventory, office and labor, and equipment requirements.

Section 2: Industry Overview

  • Describe the company’s position in the industry.
  • Describe the existing competition and the major players in the industry.
  • Provide information about the industry that the business will operate in, estimated revenues, industry trends, government influences, as well as the demographics of the target market.

Section 3: Market Analysis and Competition

  • Define your target market, their needs, and their geographical location.
  • Describe the size of the market, the units of the company’s products that potential customers may buy, and the market changes that may occur due to overall economic changes.
  • Give an overview of the estimated sales volume vis-à-vis what competitors sell.
  • Give a plan on how the company plans to combat the existing competition to gain and retain market share.

Section 4: Sales and Marketing Plan

  • Describe the products that the company will offer for sale and its unique selling proposition.
  • List the different advertising platforms that the business will use to get its message to customers.
  • Describe how the business plans to price its products in a way that allows it to make a profit.
  • Give details on how the company’s products will be distributed to the target market and the shipping method.

Section 5: Management Plan

  • Describe the organizational structure of the company.
  • List the owners of the company and their ownership percentages.
  • List the key executives, their roles, and remuneration.
  • List any internal and external professionals that the company plans to hire, and how they will be compensated.
  • Include a list of the members of the advisory board, if available.

Section 6: Operating Plan

  • Describe the location of the business, including office and warehouse requirements.
  • Describe the labor requirement of the company. Outline the number of staff that the company needs, their roles, skills training needed, and employee tenures (full-time or part-time).
  • Describe the manufacturing process, and the time it will take to produce one unit of a product.
  • Describe the equipment and machinery requirements, and if the company will lease or purchase equipment and machinery, and the related costs that the company estimates it will incur.
  • Provide a list of raw material requirements, how they will be sourced, and the main suppliers that will supply the required inputs.

Section 7: Financial Plan

  • Describe the financial projections of the company, by including the projected income statement, projected cash flow statement, and the balance sheet projection.

Section 8: Appendices and Exhibits

  • Quotes of building and machinery leases
  • Proposed office and warehouse plan
  • Market research and a summary of the target market
  • Credit information of the owners
  • List of product and/or services

Willingness to take chances

Business owners who are willing to take chances tend to achieve more than those who play it safe.

“Successful businesses may be established enough to follow stable business processes, but they’re also bold as well as risk-taking,” said Jake Smith, managing director of Absolute Reg . “They know that failure is just a start to becoming successful. And while they’re practical, successful entrepreneurs are always willing to make modifications.”

Unique value

Providing customers with unique value helps businesses stand out from their competitors, said Reda Elmardi, CEO of Strong Chap .

“We can’t all have the cheapest prices, but you can surely emphasize other aspects of benefit,” Elmardi added. “From engaging industry experts to add to your customer service, to [finding] unique goods/offerings, to executing loyalty programs, there are countless ways to make your business distinct from your competitor.”

To both reach and retain success, businesses must have tenacity, or determination, and persistence in the face of conflict.

“Tenacity will allow you to withstand the toughest of times and also fully embrace the best of times,” said Christopher Grozdon, CMO of DASH-SEO . “There will always be ups and downs throughout everyone's lives, yet with owning a business, you will certainly experience those ups and downs to the extreme … If you have the tenacity to push through tough times and work hard to achieve your goals, you'll most likely become a successful business, through and through.”

Customer-centric approach

Many businesses get swept up with their own personal goals and lose sight of those who matter most: their customers.

“One thing successful businesses have in common is … a strong customer focus,” said John Stevenson, marketing specialist at My GRE Exam Preparation . “They create a culture that is centered around their customers and focus their processes, products and services around their services needs. Delivering constant high quality products/services also helps them succeed as people's regard for them remains high and positive.”

A business that is able to nurture the same passion they have for their offering within their employees is one that will deliver excellence to their clientele at every touchpoint.

Chris Taylor, marketing director at Profit Guru , noted that successful businesses tend to have good marketing strategies that got them there in the first place.

“Businesses normally obtain the most success through their marketing efforts,” he said. “The key to your marketing strategy is to employ as many marketing channels as possible. For instance, pulling customers by pay-per-click advertising, newsletters and social media is expected to attract more customers than it would from practicing just one of these courses.”

Strong vision

If you lack a specific vision or company mission, your business won’t be consistent, which can hurt your bottom line.

“Most successful businesses have a strong ultimate objective which they strive for every day,” said Kevin Mercier, founder of Kevmrc.com . “These businesses achieve their goals by setting short-term, medium-term and long-term objectives which they go on to accomplish day by day. This vision is not just instilled into higher-level management but even lower-level employees that work together in synergy to achieve their firm's ultimate goals.”

Passionate leaders

According to Lance Wilkins, founder of Call Outdoors , passionate leaders are the backbone of thriving businesses.

“One of the key characteristics of a successful business is a leader (or leadership team) who gets their employees as excited about their product or service as they are,” he said. “A business that is able to nurture the same passion they have for their offering within their employees is one that will deliver excellence to their clientele at every touchpoint.”

Empowered employees

Employees play a crucial role in a business’s success and development, and it’s important they’re in alignment with their company’s mission.

“Most successful [business owners] … make sure their employees are empowered to make decisions and take ownership of their work,” said Karthik Subramanian, senior content manager at Picmaker . “That means there is no micro-management, nor is there any fear-mongering. Rather, it is a collaborative approach.”

Adaptability

Tom Winter, founder of DevSkiller , stressed the importance of keeping up with your customers’ ever-changing expectations.

“Businesses that are resilient and withstand the tests of time, including pandemics, are the ones that are the most adaptable,” said Tom Winter, founder of DevSkiller . “With the fast pace of technology these days and constant shifts in trends, it’s important to be able to mold your business accordingly.”

Diversity is especially important today, as consumers and businesses alike are aiming to be more inclusive and socially responsible.

“The notion that two heads are better than one only works if both of those heads are listened to and each of them have something different to say,” said Christy Pruitt-Haynes, leadership development, human resources and diversity consultant . “If not, a company can get a louder version of the wrong answer. Diversity, when coupled with collaboration, ensures innovation and a wider skill set for the company.”

Perhaps you’ve heard the old saying that failing to plan is the same as planning to fail.

It’s commonly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the 18th century inventor and politician whose belief in the value of preparation was strong enough that he once made a list of more than 12 character traits around which he planned to structure his life.

Franklin’s preparation paid off. Today, he’s remembered not only for signing the Declaration of Independence but for researching electricity, serving as the U.S. ambassador to France and founding the University of Pennsylvania.

Accomplishments like those illustrate the importance of preparation for entrepreneurs starting or expanding their own businesses, especially since only half of all startups survive their first five years. The secret: A well-crafted business plan can help make yours one of the success stories .

Not only is having one often a prerequisite for lenders and investors, it’s a road map that helps owners identify both risks and opportunities in their markets so that they’re prepared for both.

Indeed, some of the most successful U.S. entrepreneurs were known for their careful strategy. John D. Rockefeller, the oil magnate whose name became a byword for wealth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often talked about “our plan” when he was developing Standard Oil Trust.

Rockefeller’s strategy was corralling what had been a haphazard oil supply that often outpaced demand and hurt producers by keeping prices low. His business expanded enough that it eventually controlled the majority of oil production in the U.S. Although it was later broken up by the U.S. government, its descendants—ExxonMobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips—still dominate the industry today.

“Writing a business plan forces you into disciplined thinking if you do an intellectually honest job,” he says. “An idea may sound great in your mind, but when you put down the details and numbers, it may fall apart.”

A further advantage of your roadmap is that, ideally, it changes with your business. It’s considered a living document, but despite its adaptability, there are basic elements the Small Business Administration says any plan should contain. They include:

1. Executive Summary:

A snapshot of your plan. This will be the last thing you write, but possibly the most important, since many readers will stop here if they’re unimpressed. If your company is a startup , focus on your background and experience as well as that of any partners to show the underpinnings of the company, the agency says. If you’re better established, make sure to include details such as when the business was started, the names of the founders and their roles, how many employees you have, and where your operations are situated.

2. Company Description:

Explain what your company does and how it stands out from competitors. List major customers as well as markets you plan to target in the future. You’ll want to include competitive advantages, such as expert personnel like the whiz-kid coder you just hired, or location: Perhaps your floral shop is next door to an all-night wedding chapel.

3. Market Analysis:

It’s crucial to understand the market you plan to enter. Find out who your competitors are, analyze their cash flow and profit margins, and research technological developments in the industry that might be game-changers. 4. Organization and Management:

Spell out the details of ownership, including investors and show your organizational chart. Specify whether your business is a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation, and if it’s the latter, what type.

5. Service or Product Line:

What do you sell, how will it help your customers, and how often will they need to replace it? The answers to those questions can be crucial factors in business sustainability . Include any patents or copyrights you own.

6. Marketing and Sales:

The best idea in the world won’t take off if you don’t let your potential customers know what you have. Are you going to rely on word of mouth, promotional discounts or advertising? Remember, your method will have to be tailored to your market. New York businesses are famous for paying people to stand on the sidewalk promoting everything from discounted pizza slices to bargain jewelry prices, but that doesn’t work nearly as well in cities without a high volume of foot traffic.

7. Funding Request:

You’ll want to include how much you need right now as well as how much more you might need over the next five years. A critical point is how you plan to repay borrowed money to creditors (if you opt for debt financing) or, alternatively, generate returns for investors. Both will want to know how you’re spending their money and when they’ll see a payoff.

8. Financial Projections:

If you need funding, provide realistic forecasts that show how you plan to generate future cash flow. Unless you’re borrowing from your parents, your funding sources will want to know. It’s easier if you can show recent financial statements and base your projections on those, since that will give lenders an idea of how realistic your numbers are.

The business plan is an outline of how the product will be created and marketed, how funds will be raised and who will buy the product.

The more detailed your business plan the better. It should look at all aspects of the business and plan for every step. One of the most important parts of the business plan is the executive summary. The executive summary is a short narrative summarizing the value of your business idea.

It helps investors or financial institutions to quickly understand the business you propose to start. It is important it be written in a way to get investors excited about the business and want to read your business plan.

The 5 Key Elements

There are 5 key elements that must be included in an effective business plan.

  • Clear description of product or service
  • Market & competition information
  • Your unique selling proposition (USP)
  • Technology and strategies required
  • Listing of feedback obtained throughout your process

It should provide a clear description of the product or service and contain an in-depth look at the market you plan to enter and your primary competitors. This should also show what makes your product or service unique and will make customers choose you and not your competitors.

Any technology to be employed should also be clearly described along with the resources you will need for production and marketing. The fifth element of the business plan is a listing of some of the feedback your executive summary has generated.

The business plan itself should contain an in-depth description and analysis of the market you propose to serve. It should include as much demographic information as possible. This will help you to better understand what your company needs to do to attract and serve them and properly position your company in the marketplace.

Part of your plan has to be ways in which you anticipate your company will grow. It should include how you think your competition will react to your entrance into the market and how you will counteract it. The business plan should also include information on any intellectual property you have in the works.

In order to come up with a price that ensure you a good profit you have to know what it will cost to create the product. You must also show why you think your product is economically viable. Do an assessment of your company and identify any competitive advantages you may have.

Show if you are a company which will create a series of products and services or your focus is one major product which you feel will make you a success. It is also crucial for you to assess the size or the market and how much of it you can capture and control. List any trends or technologies which could negatively affect your company’s development and growth.

List the required resources to make your vision a reality, too ( like I did here ). This should include the members of your proposed management team and any other key hires you plan to make along with all technology or equipment you will use. You should also state the amount of capital you will need and a financial plan to show how you will use it. Point out your potential revenue streams.

You also have to include a profit and loss statement, a balance sheet and a cash flow plan that covers the first 12 months, 12 quarters and one for each of the first three years. It should show when you anticipate beginning to make a profit. You must also identify your sources of funding so don’t close out that file before you have this covered.

Get Your Plan in Order

  • Marketing and Sales Strategy The best product in the world wouldn’t sell if it has a poor marketing plan. Get into detail with how you’ll advertise your product. Detail your target audience, prices, and any promotional discounts.
  • Funding This is the most important section in your plan because it states your initial budget, the funds you’ll need for the next five years, what you plan on doing with the funds, the creditors’ or investors’ return, and all business expenses such as salaries and equipment.
  • Financial Forecast If you’re using your business plan for a loan or funds, you need to have the documents to back up your claim. You need to include all your financial statements and balance sheets, and any sources of income from the past few years.
  • Business Overview Give a general overview of your business with info like the legal structure, operations plan, business address , whether it’s an online or physical business, number of employees, specific roles, etc.

You can write your business plan yourself, but with all the elements that need to be added, it can get complicated. If your business plan is short, then you might not need a template. If your plan is lengthy, you can find templates with a prepared structure online. In order to have a professional, well-written business plan, you can look into hiring someone with experience to get the job done. They would be able to better structure your plan and add charts and graphs when needed.

Do Your Research

Before jumping into writing your business plan, you need to ensure you’ve done an efficient amount of research. It’s your responsibility to have the answers to the questions that creditors or investors would ask. If for funding, you’ll need to be very precise and clear with your targets and overall writing.

A Modified Business Plan

Your business plan is going to be read by various types of people from bankers, investors, and venture capitalists, to employees and yourself. Each audience type has certain points they’re looking for in your plan and you need to address those points accordingly. Make sure your plan can easily be modified according to your target audience. Every business plan should include five-year goals, but most importantly, it should include short-term goals such as annual and quarterly goals. It’s great to know where you want your business to be in the future, but investors need to know you have a clear plan to get there.

A business plan shouldn’t just be blocks of text; you need to make your plan appealing by adding images, charts, or graphs whenever possible. It won’t only improve your overall design; it can simplify and explain complicated sections. While entrepreneurship is commonly thought of as the process of starting a business, there are several nuances to consider.

In the HBS Online course Entrepreneurship Essentials , entrepreneurship is defined as “the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources currently controlled.” An opportunity can be a myriad of things, but the course describes it as "a proposed venture to sell a product or service for which customers are willing to pay more than the required investments and operating costs.”

Entrepreneurs —either as individuals or in teams—discover opportunities throughout their personal and professional lives. They form hypotheses on ways to deliver value to customers and perform structured tests to validate their ideas. A busy office worker said he transformed his physique in four months thanks to an efficient workout plan.

Andre Frade works for an investment bank in London, and his schedule doesn't leave much extra time for the gym. He told Business Insider he was frustrated and unmotivated after about a decade of spending money and valuable free time trying different workouts and sports without seeing the results he wanted.

"I wanted to get the magazine cover body," Frade, 30, said. "I thought there must be some secret I don't know."

About four months ago he, started working with Adam Enaz , a personal trainer who champions a well-researched, increasingly popular exercise technique known as a superset.

While there is good evidence that resting 1-3 minutes between sets of exercise is ideal for building muscle, that adds up to a lot of extra minutes (and eventually hours) in the gym.

With supersets , you combine complementary exercises, without taking a break in between. A recent preprint study found this method to be extremely effective for building muscle.

With a little planning, supersets can be a great way to save time in the gym without sacrificing gains, according to Enaz.

After changing up his workouts and slightly adjusting his diet, Frade not only saw more visibly defined muscle , but also increased all of his lifts in the process, without spending long hours exercising.

"We managed to create a very short but very effective workout," he said. "After work I know I have to go to the gym but I'm in and out."

Supersets combine exercises for more gains in less time

Building muscle and strength isn't just about how hard you work — in order for the muscle to grow, you need rest too, Enaz told Business Insider.

"The longer you rest, the more muscle you gain," Enaz said.

To harness the benefits of rest, Enaz uses a specific variation of the technique called an antagonist superset, in which the paired exercises use opposing muscle groups, like chest and back or biceps and triceps. Another type of superset involves pairing unrelated muscle groups, like upper and lower body.

In theory, researchers and trainers say, the combos allow one muscle group to rest while you're working a different muscle group with another exercise, tapping into the benefits of rest without added time.

For Frade, it means spending more of his precious time in the gym making gains.

"It saves time on waiting around for the muscle to be ready for the next set," he said.

Ditching the 'bro split' in favor of full-body workouts

Another benefit of the superset method is that makes it possible to move beyond the so-called " bro split, " Enaz told BI.

The "bro split" is a pretty standard approach to a gym routine: crush a specific muscle group at a time, with exercises from every angle.

Using supersets, you can create a full-body plan, and work out harder, because you're not exhausting any one muscle group. Enaz, who is also a clinical dietitian, said that's a benefit if your goal is fat loss, because a full-body workout offers more opportunities for calorie burn.

Frade said the overall evidence-based approach appealed to him "as a data guy," and that doing four sessions a week for no more than an hour each fit his ambitious schedule.

Doing a few sets per muscle group more frequently allowed him to make each set count by adding more weight and pushing himself harder, he said.

To burn fat, Frade also dialed in his diet, maintaining a small calorie deficit to burn fat by being more mindful of how much he consumed.

"I can eat everything, I just compromise on the portions," he said.

Seeing his progress boosted his drive to keep going.

"What I was always lacking was consistency and motivation. I would work hard for two weeks and didn't see changes so I would stop," Frade said.

Sticking to his goal and following through gave him a sense of confidence. "It doesn't mean it's easy, but it's possible. I've taken that to work, too."

Late Night Business Safety Plan Program

Montgomery County is committed to establishing a uniform process for those businesses in areas experiencing higher than normal call volumes in the late-night hours. The business safety plan summarizes the establishment’s efforts to safely conduct operations for patrons and employee(s) consistent with County Executive Regulation 004-24. Consistent with this Regulation, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) has launched a Late-Night Business Safety Plan application portal.

Am I required ?

Beginning September 13, 2024, businesses required to submit a safety plan are those that have an “other tobacco products retailer” license, food license, license for on-site cannabis consumption, or liquor license where the products sold are consumed on-site at tables or other areas designated for consumption by the business, and that:

  • Are open to patrons from 2:00am – 5:00am; or,
  • Are open to patrons from 12:00am – 5:00am and have had two serious incidents within the previous 12 months. See the FAQs for the definition of a serious incident.

Applicable businesses will receive training at the business location from a MCPD officer within 30 days of the application submission. Upon submission of the application, the district station will be notified and an officer will contact the applicant to arrange the training. Training must be completed before the Safety Plan can be considered for approval.

A business-specific written document summarizing the establishment’s efforts to safely conduct operations for patrons and employee(s) consistent with guidelines and training described in Montgomery County Executive Regulation 004-24.

According to Montgomery County Executive Regulation 004-24, Serious Incidents are defined as:

  • Distribution of narcotics or other controlled dangerous substances;
  • A sexual offense in the third or fourth degree under § 3-307 or § 3-308 of the Criminal Law Article of the Maryland Code; or
  • A crime of violence as defined in § 14-101 of the Criminal Law Article, including:
  • kidnapping;
  • manslaughter, except involuntary manslaughter;
  • human trafficking;
  • sexual offense of any degree;
  • use of a handgun in the commission of a felony or other crime of violence;
  • an attempt to commit any of the crimes described in the preceding bullets of this list;
  • assault in the first degree;
  • assault against a law enforcement officer or emergency medical services provider in any degree; and, assault with intent of any type in any degree.

The Safety Plan Review Panel will receive and conduct a preliminary review of the late-night business safety plan within 30 (thirty) days of receipt of each safety plan.

  • Businesses may appeal the disapproval of a safety plan or the requirement to produce a safety plan under the serious incident inclusion provision before the Montgomery County Board of Appeals.
  • Appeals must be filed within 30 days of receipt of the decision disapproving a plan or notification of the requirement to produce a plan.

Funding availability is subject to appropriation by the Montgomery County Council.

Intel is spinning off its chipmaking business as part of its plans to reverse billions in losses and a tumbling stock price. In an announcement on Monday , Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the Intel Foundry will become an independent subsidiary with “clearer separation and independence” from Intel.

With the change, the Intel Foundry will have its own operating board and report its financial earnings separately from Intel. Intel will also stop work on the factories it’s building in Poland and Germany for two years “based on anticipated market demand.” The company is still moving forward with its plants in Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico, and Ohio, however.

Additionally, Intel plans on selling part of its stake in Altera, the programmable chip company it acquired in 2015. It will also cut around two-thirds of its global real estate footprint. As part of this announcement, Intel revealed that the Biden administration awarded the company up to $3 billion in funding to make chips for the US military.

These changes will likely be crucial in getting Intel back on track as a leading chipmaker. On top of widespread issues affecting 13th and 14th Gen CPUs, the company reported $1.6 billion in the first quarter of 2024, with its chipmaking business alone racking up $7 billion in operating losses in 2023. In August, Intel announced layoffs affecting 15,000 workers , and now it says it is “more than halfway” to this goal.

“As I’ve said before, this is the most significant transformation of Intel in over four decades.
