Applying for a summer job? Depending on the position you are interested in, you may need to submit a resume and cover letter along with your job application.

Whether you are a student, teacher, parent, or just looking to try something different, your resume and cover letter may include a variety of experiences that would be applicable to the position. If you’re a student, your resume will be different from that of someone who has been in the workforce for a while.

What to Include and Writing Tips

As a student, you will want to include on your resume any pertinent coursework, volunteer work, and any clubs and teams you may have participated in.  The hiring manager is going to understand that you may not have experience specific to the available position, but they will be looking to see that you are responsible, can accomplish tasks thoroughly and on time, and that you are willing to work hard.

For most summer jobs, it is especially effective to describe instances where you have demonstrated leadership or have worked well on a team.

Provide examples of this and of times when you have quickly learned new processes or information in order to successfully complete a project or task.

Other applicants should tailor their resume to include experiences more directly related to the job they are applying for.  If you have had more than a few jobs, select the ones that closely relate to the summer position you are interested in. In your description, highlight the skills and experiences most nearly matched to the requirements of the job .

Your cover letter is your chance to elaborate on why the position interests you, and how you feel your experiences will make you the best candidate for the position.

In your cover letter , you should mention where you learned about the job, including its specific title. Use the body of the letter as your “sales pitch” to outline the desired skills (as stated in the job posting) that you would bring to the job. Close your letter with a statement of your enthusiasm for the job, a request to meet for a personal interview, and a sincere “thank you” for the employer’s consideration of your candidacy.

Here is an example of a cover letter and resume that you can tailor to fit your own personal situation. Also see below for more examples of resumes and letters that will help you get the job.

I would like to express my strong interest in the golf caddy position you listed on golfjobs.com. I have excellent working knowledge of the sport, as well as experience in customer service, and know that I would be an ideal candidate for the position.

I have been playing golf competitively for the past six years with the Junior PGA, which has given me the opportunity to become very familiar with your club as well as many others in the region. Currently, I am team captain for my high school golf team. We have been Division Champions for the last two years, and I was awarded Individual Honors at the State Finals last year. I have experience as an assistant golf coach, having worked at my home club’s summer camp for the last three years.

I believe that my experience will allow me to provide a friendly and enjoyable experience for all club members. I would be extremely comfortable on the course, and as a caddy would be confident in answering any of the club members’ golf-related questions. Tips for Writing a Summer Job Cover Letter

Consider the following tips for writing with the help of the sample below:

Tailor your letter to a summer job

Avoid writing a general letter. After all, you are particularly looking for a summer job as opposed to an ordinary job. Instead, tailor your letter to it.

Skills and qualifications

Every job requires some sort of set of skills and qualifications. Of course, by the time you are considering applying for a job, you have already considered the skills and qualifications necessary for that particular job. Be sure to highlight them.

Include your relevant work experience

Do you have past work experience that could be useful? If yes, include it. Including this information will give the employer more confidence that you can handle your job .

Emphasize your ability to learn fast

Are you a quick learner? If yes, you have a huge advantage over other applicants. Summer jobs are temporary and that means employers prefer candidates who are able to learn quickly. Emphasizing your quick learning capabilities will increase your chances of being invited for an interview .

Show the employer that you are hardworking and diligent

No employer wants to hire an employee who will hardly go a month without asking for a day off from work. This is because it costs the company a lot of money through decreased productivity. Showing the employer that you are a hardworking and diligent person will make them want to give you a try.

Make a positive first impression on a prospective employer with these tips for writing an effective cover letter..

Superintendent cover letter

You may be a pro at introductions and meeting new people in person, but how about your ability to introduce yourself in writing? This can be more of a challenge, particularly in a job search, where your first communication with a potential employer will likely be via email.

This month’s column focuses on cover letters as a key part of a written introduction in a successful job search. We’ll explore ways to capitalize on your written introduction, with the aim of compelling the reader to eagerly reach for your résumé to learn more about you.

Cover letter basics

A cover letter accompanies your résumé and references when you apply for a job. It is your opportunity to give the reader a framework through which to read the rest of your career documents. It should be concise — typically only three or four paragraphs — to keep the reader’s attention.

GCSAA members often ask whether the contents of their cover letter should be pasted into the body of an email when submitting a résumé, rather than attached as a separate cover letter document. The answer is no — it’s a letter, not just a note in an email. The person receiving the email and processing the documents may not necessarily be a decision-maker. You therefore want your documents to be as professional as possible when printed for or emailed to the hiring committee.

Would you want the committee to get its first impression of you based on an email printout along with your résumé and references? Or would you want them to see a letter that is professionally displayed, with the font and overall look matching that of your résumé and references?

When emailing career documents, I also recommend combining them into one PDF attachment so the recipient simply has to print once, and so your formatting is locked in properly. (The format of a Word document can shift depending on what version of the software the recipient has. Best to send as a PDF, which will appear the same everywhere.)

Answer why you want the job

Before jumping right into career successes and achievements, first focus on the target audience and their golf facility. Golfers love their home course, and a hiring committee consists of those golfers along with management members such as the owner, general manager and director of golf.

When we introduce ourselves in person, we instinctively adjust our message based on who we’re meeting. The same needs to be true for a written introduction. By first acknowledging the reader and articulating why you’re pursuing this particular job — and perhaps including aspects you admire about the golf course, staff or facility — you’ll create a memorable introduction and provide a pathway that shows how your career steps have led you to this specific job.

Introduce you — not just your skill set

A cover letter is an opportunity to offer some insight into you as a person, beyond just facts, figures and job titles. In reality, all other qualified job applicants are going to have similar experience and skills, so concentrating on those alone will not differentiate you in this highly competitive industry.

A fundamental goal for an introduction is to be memorable and compelling. Give a glimpse into you: Are you passionate about your work? Are you passionate about the game of golf? What motivates you as you lead your team and work to provide excellent playing conditions for everyone who steps onto your golf course?

Highlight only points that are relevant to your target audience

Select two or three of your career successes that relate directly to the golf facility where you’re applying, and emphasize those aspects. Convey how your achievements relate to the future success of their unique situation.

Research to find out what qualities the hiring committee may be seeking for this role. Is this course planning a major renovation, for example? Is it a private club looking to grow its membership? Are the greens extraordinary and a major point of pride? If you better understand the reader’s priorities, you can identify corresponding highlights from your career to strengthen your introduction — and hopefully prompt them to dive into your résumé for more.
