Essay on The Holy Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)

Our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was born in Makkah in the famous tribe of Quraish. His father, Abdullah died before his birth. So his mother, Amna Bibi looked after him. But she also died when he was only six years old. New, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib took charge of him, but he did not live long. Finally, his uncle, Abu Talib looked after him and never left him alone in any hardship.

Our Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) married Khadija, a wealthy lady of Makkah when he was twenty-five years old. Hazrat Khadija handed over all her wealth to our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to spend for good and noble purposes. He helped the poor and needy. When our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) reached the age of forty he was commanded by Allah, the Almighty to preach Islam. Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) started preaching that there is no God but Allah who is the creator of the universe and to whom all human beings would return.

The people of Makkah accepted Islam very slowly. In the beginning, only a few people accepted the new religion. The Makkans indeed became the sworn enemy of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and his follower. They created all sort of troubles for the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) but he stood firm. At last, they planned to kill the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and he was compelled to leave for Medina where he was accorded a warm welcome by his followers. But the infidels did not allow him to live even there in peace. They fought several battles in order to wipe out the followers of Islam. However, Allah granted strength to our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) to defeat them and come out successful in his mission.

After ten years stay in Medinah, the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) came back to Makkah with ten thousand of his followers and conquered Makkah. On the day of his conquest, he could severely punish those who caused so much trouble and planned to kill him, but he excused everybody. After that, the new religion prospered by leaps and bounds.

Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) returned to his Creator at the age of sixty-three. He left for his followers the Holy Quran and the Sunnah.

Prophet Muhammad and the Power of Peace

As we go about our lives in this modern age, we are constantly bombarded with reports of violence and unrest in all parts of the world.

It often feels like our world is broken, and nothing short of a miracle will fix it.

So many people have serious grievances and seemingly unsolvable problems.

But this is nothing new.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born into a society that had many of the major problems that we face today.

And he mended ties between neighbors, people and even his own enemies .

He taught us how to turn those issues of strife into peace and security for everyone.

A Peacekeeper Between Neighbors

The more you know him, the more you love him.

In the society in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) was raised, treating one’s neighbor badly was considered acceptable and even expected behavior.

It wasn’t uncommon for neighbors to be constantly fighting and spitting insults at one another, among other more harsh treatment.

Ja’far ibn abu Talib, Prophet Muḥammad’s cousin, described to Negus, The King of Ethiopia, the common practice of un-neighborliness.

“We were a nation of ignorance and evil. We used to break our family ties and treat neighbors badly”. (Reported by Ahmad)

To this society who thought nothing of treating each other so badly, the Prophet Muhammad said:

By God, he is not a believer, by God, he is not a believer, by God, he is not a believer, with whom his neighbors are not secure. (Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet came to establish peace, justice and social harmony.

And by rectifying the treatment of neighbors, he was using a grassroots approach to establishing a community based on neighborliness.

But he didn’t just preach this good treatment of neighbors to other. He practiced it.

One of many examples of this was when the Prophet learned of the sickness of his Jewish neighbor, he visited him and made sure he was taken care of.

A Peacekeeper Among Peoples

How i came to know and love the real god.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born into a world filled with turmoil.

Not only did neighbors regularly disrespect and goad each other, tribes were constantly warring with each other over the smallest and even perceived infractions.

Corruption was the order of the day in politics.

The rich and wealthy lived lavishly on the backs of the weak and oppressed.

Peace and safety was not a luxury many enjoyed.

Prophet Muhammad’s time and place had a great effect on him. Before the revelation came to him, he spent a lot of time in seclusion, contemplating the chaotic state of his society. It weighed on him heavily.

During the Prophet’s life, even prior to revelation from Allah Almighty, he was known as a peace keeper.

He demonstrated his desire to keep the peace and his genius way of doing so while the tribes of Quraysh were rebuilding the Ka’bah:

“The tribes of Quraysh reached the point where the Black Stone was to be placed in its designated site.

A dispute erupted between the various tribes of Quraysh.

[… The Prophet] asked them to bring a garment and place it on the ground. He placed the Black Stone on it.

He then requested that each of the leaders of Quraysh hold the garment from one side and all participate in lifting the Black Stone, moving it to its designated area. […].” (Tafsir ibn Kathir)

This is one of many examples in which he established peace among different peoples.

After having received revelation from Allah (SWT) and proclaiming the message, his role as peacekeeper intensified.

Many people did not like the message of Islam . It demanded justice and social equality.

Those who benefited from the unjust social structure of the time didn’t want to see their status change nor did they want their privilege taken away.

How Do I Make My Heart Love Allah?

These tyrants saw Islam as a threat to their unjust advantage in life over the weak.

Those who opposed Islam sought to destroy the message by any means necessary.

The first Muslims in Mecca were tortured, murdered, starved, boycotted by these enemies of Islam.

But during this time in Mecca, the Prophet sought peace and told the Muslims not to retaliate.

Allah revealed to him that:

Not equal are the good deed and the bad deed. Repel evil by that which is better, and then the one who is hostile to you will become as a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient and none is granted it except one having a great fortune. (Quran 41:34-35 )

When the situation in Medina got so bad that the Muslims were running the risk of extinction, Prophet Muhammad’s reputation as a peacekeeper secured for the Muslims a home in a new city called Yathrib, now known as Medina.

In Medina at that time, there were many different peoples, tribes, and faiths living in extreme civil unrest.

The city was lawless and most disputes were settled by the blade, which lead to even more disputes.

The inhabitants of Medina desperately needed peace and structure, so they ask the Prophet to come arbitrate and establish peace among them.

Upon his arrival in Medina , the Prophet drew up the constitution of Medina. A document that is, to this day, a shining example of how pluralism can exist and can even exist in peace.

The Zia Shah explains that:

“The Constitution established: the security of the community, religious freedoms, the role of Medina as a haram or sacred place (barring all violence and weapons), the security of women, stable tribal relations within Medina.” and so much more.

A Peace Creator Between Enemies

Prophet Muhammad taught his followers to exhaust all avenues to peace before fighting:

“O people, do not wish to meet the enemy but rather ask Allah for security. If you meet your enemy in battle, then be patient and know that Paradise is under the shade of swords.” (Sahih Bukhari)

But even after leaving Mecca, the enemies of Islam pursued the Prophet and his followers.

The enemies of Islam would not accept peace, and there came a time for self defense so that this message of justice and equality could be propagated. But even though it came to the point of bloodshed, the Prophet still wanted peace.

In the battle of Uhud, when his enemies attacked the Muslims, Prophet Muhammad suffered a head injury.

When the blood started to seep from his head, he swabbed it saying:

“‘If a drop of my blood fell on the earth, those infidels will be destroyed by Allah.’

Umar told him, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Curse them!’

The prophet replied:

‘I wasn’t sent (by Allah) to curse. I was sent as a mercy.’

Then he said:

‘O Allah, Guide my people!’ (Authenticated by Al-Albani)

The Prophet taught us that peace should be sought until those who wish to fight you leave you no other option but to defend yourself and your right to worship Allah (SWT) alone.

But even then, the Prophet showed us how to always leave the doors to peace open.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned to Mecca in victory and having the upper hand, he did not go back to the city looking for revenge.

He went back victorious with an offer of peace.

He didn’t take revenge on the people who had tortured, murdered, and brought war to the Muslims.

Forgiveness and peace were offered and the dua of the prophet: ‘O Allah, Guide my people!’- was answered.

To this day, the descendants of his people are Muslims who love and respect the Prophet for the peace and mercy he brought to them.

Muhammad The Life and Legacy of the Last Prophet

When the name Muhammad is mentioned, Islam invariably comes to mind, and rightfully so. The Prophet of what is projected to become the largest world religion in the next 50 years, is a man with high morals for all to revere as an inspiration deserving immense respect. In short, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is a man worth knowing.

Early Years And Marriage

Born in Mecca, Arabia, in the year 570, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was orphaned at a young age. His father died shortly before he was born, and his mother died when he was around 6 years old. His grandfather cared for him until his death when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was around 8 years old. After the death of his grandfather, he went to live with his uncle who was of the powerful Meccan tribe Quraysh. During his lifetime, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never learned to read or write, yet he earned a reputation for trustworthiness and generosity. He was also known to be deeply spiritual and highly self critical of the Meccan people’s worship of idols rather than belief in one God .

In his early years, Muhammad ﷺ tended to his uncle’s flocks. Years later, in his early 20’s, he was hired by a successful entrepreneur and business owner named Khadejah to act as the agent for her trade caravan sent to Syria. Upon his return, she was impressed by his honesty, integrity and trading skills, so she proposed marriage to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he accepted. Together they had four daughters and two sons, however both boys died before the age of 3. Their marriage was a happy one that lasted about 25 years. During the duration of their marriage, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never married another woman. When she died, he was extremely bereaved. Years after her death, he came across a necklace she once wore. When he saw it, he remembered her and began to cry. His devotion and love for her was so deep and apparent, that on another occasion, he was asked if Khadijah had been the only woman worthy of his love. The Prophet replied:

“She believed in me when no one else did; she accepted Islam when people rejected me; and she helped and comforted me when there was no one else to lend me a helping hand.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Throughout the course of several years after Khadijah’s death, he married several women, including Aishah. Regarding Khadijah, Aishah said:

“I did not feel jealous of any of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ as much as I did of Khadijah though I did not see her, but the Prophet ﷺ used to mention her very often, and when ever he slaughtered a sheep, he would cut its parts and send them to the women friends of Khadijah. When I sometimes said to him, “(You treat Khadijah in such a way) as if there is no woman on earth except Khadijah,” he would say, “Khadijah was such-and-such, and from her I had children.” [Sahih Bukhari]

The final wife he wed, Maria, gave birth to a son, but he died in infancy. No other children were born to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Prophethood at a Glance

When he was 40, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited a cave he often frequented to reflect and worship. There he was visited by the Angel Gabriel and received the first Quranic verse. He was shaken and shocked by this experience and rushed home to his wife Khadijah, whom he confided in about what happened. She comforted and assured him when he told her what he saw and heard in the cave. Hence, Khadijah became the first convert to Islam .

Over the following 23 years, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would continue to receive divine revelations. These revelations, the Quran, were eventually gathered and recorded. In the beginning of the Prophet’s purpose to share Islam, people slowly accepted Islam, but it was not without consequence. They suffered terrible persecution for their beliefs, so in the year 622 Muslims were given permission by God to move to the city of Madina, approximately 260 miles north of Mecca. This Muslim migration marks the start of the Islamic calendar.

During his time in Madina, Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ influence grew along with the number of converts to Islam. With strength in numbers, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his followers were able to return to Mecca several years later and forgive those who rose against them.

By the time of his death at the age of 63 in Madinah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, with God’s help, had established a Muslim society that had spread and extended throughout the greater part of the Arabian Peninsula. The clear and simple message of Islam, that people should worship God alone, proved a powerful creed for people to believe and put into practice.

Upstanding Character

Before receiving the first revelation, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known throughout Mecca as “The Trustworthy.” He was also known as a spiritual and sincere man, one who was highly respected amongst his family and his peers. He was forgiving, patient, just, and kind, even to those who treated him badly.

God referred to the Prophet’s ﷺ virtues, including his gentleness, in the Quran,

“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [up on Him] . [ Noble Quran 3:159]

In all of his dealings, be it as a spiritual leader, teacher, politician, husband, father, and friend, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exhibited beautiful attributes such as compassion, gentleness, and humbleness. For example, it was well known he visited the sick, milked his own goat, mended his shoes and clothing, contributed to the upkeep and cleanliness of his home, and even worked alongside his companions to build a mosque for prayer and worship.

But it was not only his own behavior Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was concerned with; he also showed great care for his followers by serving as a perfect role model for them and for everyone around him. God himself says in the Quran that Muhammad ﷺ is an example for Muslims to imitate and follow.

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” [Noble Quran 33:21]

Though revered as the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad ﷺ was just a man, as he was quick to tell his followers lest they should err and worship him in place of the One God of whom he preached. However, as a chosen Messenger of God, he was blessed by The Almighty with all of the most perfect humanly attributes, as God states.

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” [Noble Quran 68:4]

God also said Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent so his followers and those who came after him might emulate his character and actions as a means of worshipping The Almighty in hopes of achieving Paradise.

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” [Noble Quran 21:107]

The Message Behind The Man

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made clear his prophetic message – the worship of the one and only God. During his 23-year prophethood, the Messenger of Islam ﷺ drew parallels between himself and the previous Messengers sent by God. He called Prophets like Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and the others his prophetic brothers, sent with the same message as his, and he shared stories of their obedience to God, their rejection of paganism and their embrace of monotheism. Because of this shared message, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was able to explain that God never changed what He wanted His Creation to follow; the worship of only one God.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also preached the ideals of spiritual equality amongst all people no matter race, color or social or economic status, saying shortly before he died,

“All humanity is from Adam and Adam is from clay. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a black over a white; except through piety.” [Sahih Bukhari]

True to character, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived his teachings, famously calling on Bilal, an early convert to Islam and freed black slave, to offer the Muslims’ first call to prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ also lived his married life in accordance with God’s divine law, which states,

“…And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” [Noble Quran 4:19]

This directive he emphasized to his followers during his final sermon, saying,

“The most perfect of the believers in faith are the best of them in morals. And the best among them are those who are best to their wives.” [Ahmad]

Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ Legacy

Undoubtedly the Prophet of Islam’s ﷺ influence is felt the world over. Today there are nearly 2 billion Muslims on Earth who closely study his life teachings and worship the one God in the way exemplified and illustrated by him.

The lessons of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ life are enduring because they represent the best of human qualities we strive for in our own character. Indeed the Messenger of God ﷺ left a beautiful legacy for us to emulate. Let’s honor him by putting his actions into practice in our own lives.

As the light of the sun moves across the globe, the call to prayer is announced in every city, testifying to the Oneness of Allah, and Muhammad as His final messenger. Sermons, for Friday prayers, Eid prayers, or marriage are not considered lawful unless the name of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is taken.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

The Prophet Muhammad was magnificent when you saw him; grand in nature. It has been narrated in the Shamail of the great hadith scholar Imam Tirmidhi, that the blessed face of the Prophet was more luminous than the moon. He was of medium stature, not exceedingly tall or short but inclining towards height. He had a broad chest and shoulders, and light hair on his body, which is indicative of manliness but not excessive as to look unbecoming. His limbs were sinewy and strong, his joints were large and powerful. He had a ruddy complexion. His hair never exceeded his ear lobes, or in some narrations just above his shoulders. His hair was neither straight nor curly but wavy.

Everything about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was moderate. He had a full mouth which emphasized the pronunciation of his words. His forehead was large, and his cheeks high, indicative of his extreme intelligence and the nobility of his lineage. The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, had a beautiful aquiline nose. His eyes were almost black in appearance and large and beautiful. It is narrated that he had a very powerful gaze, which demonstrated the authority of a commander. He had long eyelashes which complimented his shyness. He had teeth which shone like hailstones, and a high neck which gleamed like silver.

Balanced outwardly as he was inwardly, his body was equally proportioned, and he never had a belly, even in old age. He had large full hands and palms. His feet were arched and so smooth and clean that when water was poured on them, it would run off immediately. He walked softly and quick paced, as if he was walking on an incline. While walking he asked his companions to walk in front, and he himself walked behind. He greeted whomsoever he met.

When he was observed from a distance, it was narrated that he always looked grief stricken due to his immense presence with his Lord. However in the company of others he would smile and make them feel joyful. He told the truth even in his jokes. His laughter was a wide smile.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him pointed not with a finger but with his whole hand, and he held his right thumb in his left palm when he spoke. When he addressed someone, he turned his entire body. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at the ground more than he looked up due to the power of his gaze. He didn’t maintain his stare at people, due to the strength of his gaze.

The character of the Prophet was exemplary and his manners were beautiful. He didn’t take rest like other people, he was constantly concerned for his ummah (community). He spoke with measured and comprehensive words and was often silent for long periods.

He was loved for his soft and gentle character. The Quran says:

{ And if you were harsh hearted they would have fled from around you } [āl ʿim'rān:159].

The Prophet never found fault in anything and he was never in state of agitation or perturbation. He never generalized. He saw every single person as a potentially good Muslim and human being.

He advised us to maintain relations with those who cut us off, to do good to people even if they harm us, and to speak the truth even if it is against ourselves. When Abdullah ibn Salam saw the Prophet for the first time him, he said he knew from the blessed face of the Prophet that this was not the face of a liar. On simply seeing the Prophet, Abdullah ibn Salam declared the Oneness of Allah and accepted Islam right there and then because he witnessed the inner and outer beauty of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Such was the perfection, beauty and power that was manifested in the Prophet.

Once a group of hostile unbelievers in Mecca, began to torture a companion of the Prophet named Khubaib. The leader of the group, Abu Sufyan asked Khubaib “Don’t you wish that Muhammad were in your place so that you could be with your family?” Khubaib replied that he would rather be cut into pieces than see even a thorn prick the blessed foot of the Prophet. As he was being killed, Khubaib then supplicated to Allah asking him to convey his greetings to the Prophet. Usamah bin Zaid said he was seated with the Messenger of Allah in Medina at that moment and he saw the Prophet’s eyes become teary as he returned the greetings. The Prophet said, « Allah has conveyed Khubaib’s greetings to me ».

On this occasion, Abu Sufyan exclaimed that the followers of Roman and Persian emperors never loved them as much as Muhammad’s followers loved him. It is narrated that each and every one of the companions felt like they were the most beloved to the Prophet, peace be upon him. He was sensitive to the needs and feelings of each one of them.

One day when the Prophet saw was traveling with his companions, his party stopped under some trees to take shelter from the sweltering mid-day heat. A Bedouin came across the group and found the Prophet napping alone, away from his companions who were also asleep. The man, Gawras, seized the opportunity and grabbing the Prophet’s sword, held it against the neck of the Prophet asking, “Who’s going to save you from me now?” The Prophet exclaimed « Allah! » With that Gawras was overcome with emotion and the sword fell from his hands. The Prophet picked up the sword. Holding it against Gawras’ neck, he asked the same question. The man asked that the Prophet be a generous taker of his life. In response, the Prophet simply pardoned Gawras, and let him go free.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to address his wives with beautiful names, race with them and play with them. His wife Ayesha said he always used to joke in the house. He fed his wives with his own hands out of love and affection. He would never complain of the food placed before him.

No man was busier than the Prophet but when he shook hands of another person, he would never release his grip until the other person did. After his passing, the reaction of his companions was tremendous. They couldn’t even tolerate separation from him let alone his death; they loved him more than themselves, their family and their children.

On the day of the Prophet’s passing away, Usman ibn Affan was struck motionless, he could not comprehend what had happened. Ali bin Abi Talib fell unconscious. Umar Farouk, the one from whom Satan himself used to run away from, was swinging a sword threatening to cut off the head of anyone who said the Prophet had passed away. The companions in general exclaimed that they wished they had died before they saw this day. Such was the impact the companions of the Prophet felt when he passed away.

Have we forgotten the love our Prophet had for us? The worry and concern the Prophet had for his followers – those who lived in his time and those yet to come? The favors and blessings his followers are showered with because of him? The tears that shed from his eyes as he called to Allah in the middle of the night, crying « My ummah! My ummah! » until Allah had to send Gabriel down to console him? Until Allah assured him that He would not disappoint him in regards to his ummah?

Today, we have forgotten the teachings of the Prophet. We have forgotten his sunnah (way of life). We have forgotten his rights on us, whereas the Prophet never for a moment forgot about us.

Let us try to commemorate the teachings of the Prophet in our lives so we may honor his memory and attempt to do his efforts justice. May peace and blessings be upon him and his household.
