Speech on World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day is a special occasion marked on September 16th each year. It’s a day when people around the globe recognize the importance of protecting the ozone layer.

You might wonder why this layer matters. Well, it shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, playing a vital role in our survival.

1-minute Speech on World Ozone Day

Greetings everyone!

Today, we are here to talk about a special day, World Ozone Day. Now, you might wonder, why is it so important? Let’s find out together.

Imagine a big, clear bubble, like the one you blow from soapy water. This bubble keeps us safe from harmful rays of the sun. This bubble is what we call the ozone layer. We are celebrating World Ozone Day to remember this crucial part of our planet’s atmosphere.

On 16th September years ago, many countries came together to protect this bubble. They signed a treaty named the Montreal Protocol. This day is marked as World Ozone Day to honor their efforts.

But, our superhero is in danger. Certain human actions release harmful gases that damage the ozone layer. But, the good news is, we can make things right.

World Ozone Day reminds us of our duty to this superhero. We should stop using things that release harmful gases. We should use more of nature-friendly products. It’s like giving a helping hand to our superhero.

To conclude, World Ozone Day is not just a day. It’s a call to action, a reminder for us all. Let’s promise to protect our superhero, the ozone layer. Remember, every small action counts. Thank you!

2-minute Speech on World Ozone Day

Today, let’s talk about a day that’s really important for all of us: World Ozone Day. You might ask, why is it so important? Because it’s about the air we breathe, the sky above us, and the earth we live on.

Let’s start with a little science. The ozone layer is like a big umbrella in the sky. It protects us from the sun’s harmful rays. Without it, we could all get very sick.

World Ozone Day is observed every year on September 16th. This special day was created to remind everyone about the value of the ozone layer. This year, let’s promise to always remember how important this day is.

So, how can we protect the ozone layer? There are many things we can do. We can start by using less energy at home. This means turning off lights, computers, and TVs when we’re not using them. We can also use public transportation, walk, or ride bikes instead of always using cars.

Now, let’s talk about things that hurt the ozone layer. Certain gases called CFCs are really bad. These gases are found in things like air conditioners and refrigerators. When we use these things, the gases can escape and go up to the sky. There, they damage the ozone layer. It’s like poking holes in our protective umbrella.

And that’s why World Ozone Day is so important. It’s a day for us to learn, to think, and to act. It’s a day to make a promise to our planet and to each other. Let’s promise to care for our ozone layer, to use less energy, and to support the people who are working to protect our sky.

On this World Ozone Day, let’s promise to be friends of the ozone layer. Because by saving the ozone layer, we save ourselves. Thank you!

Secretary-General's Message

The international treaties to protect the ozone layer have made a dramatic and measurable difference to protecting people and planet. They show the power of multilateralism. And they should inspire hope that, together, we can avert the worst of climate change and build a sustainable and resilient world.

Limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius is still possible if we immediately and drastically accelerate climate action. I have proposed a Climate Solidarity Pact and an Acceleration Agenda to help achieve this. I urge all leaders to work together to put them into effect – and to support these efforts by getting behind the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and limiting planet-heating hydrofluorocarbons.

Fully ratifying and implementing the Kigali Amendment could avoid up to 0.5°C of warming by 2100. Combining the transition away from planet-heating gases with energy efficiency measures in cooling equipment could double this figure.

I call on all countries to ratify the Amendment. And I urge governments, along with business leaders, civil society, academia, youth groups, local communities, and others, to intensify efforts to bring about real change, and to ensure developing countries have the support they need to do so.

Let’s harness the spirit of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol to build a world where humans, nature and the planet thrive together.

World Ozone Day: Here’s What You Should Know

“let us take encouragement from how we have worked together to preserve the ozone layer and apply the same will to healing the planet and forging a brighter and more equitable future for all humanity.” —antónio guterres, secretary-general of the un.

The ozone layer plays a critical role in protecting our planet—and it should therefore be our priority to protect in return. To recognize this important part of the atmosphere, the UN General Assembly has proclaimed September 16th the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer .

So how much do you know about this vital shield and the significance of this day? Let’s dive in to learn more about World Ozone Day.

What is the significance of World Ozone Day?

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1987. The day is intended to celebrate the global cooperation to protect the ozone layer, showing that groups around the world can come together, guided by science, and work to achieve collective good.

What is the ozone layer?

Ozone is a gas that is naturally present in our atmosphere, with each ozone molecule containing three atoms of oxygen. Ozone is formed when sunlight hits oxygen molecules and breaks them up into individual atoms, which then join up with O2 molecules to create O3.

Ozone molecules are primarily concentrated in the stratosphere, which is located about 50 kilometres above the Earth’s surface—this layer of atmospheric gas is called the ozone layer. About 90 percent of atmospheric ozone can be found here. The remaining 10 percent exists in the troposphere, which is the part of our atmosphere that is closest to Earth.

Why is the ozone layer so important?

This shield of gas protects life on our planet as we know it. It protects the Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which can be harmful to people through conditions like sunburn, skin cancer and cataracts, and also poses serious risks to plants and ecosystems on our planet. The ozone layer absorbs about 98 percent of the ultraviolet light. Think of it as a giant layer of sunscreen for our planet (although that’s not an excuse to not wear sunscreen!)

What is threatening the ozone layer?

In 1985, it was reported that a “hole” or depletion was forming in the ozone layer over Antarctica. Certain molecules that were dispensed by human-made products were coming into contact with ozone molecules, causing them to break up and lose their ability to absorb the UV light.

The biggest offenders of depleting the ozone are found in chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals used in the manufacturing of aerosol sprays, air conditioners, refrigerants, fire extinguishers and manufacturing foams.

What is the solution?

After the ozone depletion over Antarctica was discovered, scientists, governments, and industry experts around the world came together to save the ozone layer. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was created in 1987, limiting substances that harm the ozone layer and focussing on saving it as a vital protector for our planet.

Nations mobilized and took measures to control global production and consumption of the substances that deplete the ozone layer, with the ultimate goal of eliminating them. Though existing products continue to emit ozone-depleting substances, the vast majority of these substances have been cut out and the ozone layer is healing and expected to return to pre-1980 values by mid-century, according to the United Nations .

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is a reminder and source of encouragement to continue protecting the ozone layer and the rest of our planet today and for future generations.

Ozone Day Speech in English 2023

The speech on Ozone Day in English is provided below.

Good morning, everyone, today on the occasion of World Ozone Day , I would like to pay my gratitude to my teachers, seniors, and friends who have given me a chance to present my views on this important topic. Do you know, why we celebrate ozone day on September 16 every year? What is the importance of this day? Well, the main purpose to celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. First, it is important to have an idea about what the ozone layer is and why it is so important for human life. The ozone layer or we can say ozone shield is a region of Earth’s stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a high amount of concentration of ozone (O 3 ) in other parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important to protect human life, as it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun. Without the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, life on Earth would be challenging. Plants cannot able to live and grow in heavy ultraviolet radiation, nor can the plankton serve as food for most of the ocean life. Because of the weakening of the Ozone Layer shield, humans would be more susceptible to skin cancer, cataracts, and impaired immune systems.

Check Teachers Day Speech Now! But there is an important point that we need to keep in mind. Ozone can both protect and harm the Earth, it all depends on where it resides. For example, if the Ozone layer is present in the stratosphere of the atmosphere, it will act as a shield. However, if it is present in the troposphere (about 10 km from the Earth’s surface), Ozone is harmful. In the troposphere, it is a pollutant that can cause damage to lung tissues and plants. Hence, it has upset the ozone balance and can have serious consequences. Most of the ozone stays within the stratosphere whereby it acts as a shield and protects the surface of the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun. To protect the ozone layer, in 1994, the UN General Assembly signed 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed which is an international agreement used to protect the ozone layer. It was designed to stop the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and to reduce their concentration in the atmosphere to help protect the earth’s ozone layer.

Check World Literacy Day Speech Now! The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful environment protection agreement made in 1987. It sets out to be an obligatory timetable for the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances. This timetable has been reviewed regularly, with phase-out dates accelerated by scientific understanding. The government of each country is taking necessary steps to protect the ozone layer, but did you know that there are several different things that we can also do to protect the ozone layer? Like, such as minimizing the use of vehicles. You can also avoid the use of some cleaning items that are harmful to us and to the environment at the same time. A lot of people do not realize that many cleaning products on the market today contain substances that are corrosive and solvents too, and these dangerous substances can be replaced with products that are not toxic to the environment, such as bicarbonate or vinegar. There are several other things that we can do to protect the ozone layer.

Check Engineers Day Speech Now! Now, what we can do as responsible citizen is to make people aware of this serious topic. We should share these with our friends, family members, and followers. This is something good and inspiring, that we should do, you may think that one person cannot make a difference, but they can. If one person does something, and then another, and so on, it will all add together to make a big change. Thank You!

World Ozone Day – September 16, 2024

World Ozone Day, observed every year on September 16, is also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, commemorating the date in 1987 when nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The need to declare an action to preserve the ozone layer came as a result of the outset of its depletion. In 2017, 30 years after the Montreal Protocol, the closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed and the effects of this have been projected to last up to 100 years.

History of World Ozone Day

The ozone layer is a region of the earth’s stratosphere absorbing most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a higher concentration of ozone than other parts of the atmosphere, though compared to other gasses in the stratosphere, it is rather small. It is mainly found in the lower portion of the stratosphere, from about 10 to 22 miles above the earth, varying according to geography and seasons.

French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson discovered the ozone layer in 1913. Measurements of the sun had shown that the radiation released from its surface to the ground on earth is usually consistent with a spectrum of a black body having extreme high temperatures, but there was no radiation below a wavelength measuring about 310 nanometers at the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. This led the scientists to deduce that the missing radiation at the ultraviolet end of the spectrum was being absorbed by something in the atmosphere. Upon several scientific tests, the spectrum of the missing radiation was eventually matched to just one known chemical, which was ozone.

The properties of this chemical were explored extensively by British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer with which stratospheric ozone from the ground could be measured. The photochemical mechanisms from which the ozone layer is formed were discovered by the British physicist Sydney Chapman in 1930. The ozone in the earth’s stratosphere comes about as a result of ultraviolet light striking ordinary oxygen molecules with two oxygen atoms, thereby splitting them into individual oxygen atoms after which the atomic oxygen then combines with unbroken Oxygen.

Check out the best short World Ozone Day speech that would surely help you to prepare your best speech on World Ozone Day.

Good morning to everyone present.

I’m XYZ from ___Standard, and I’m here to give a World Ozone Day Speech.

This year’s theme is “A Healthy Atmosphere-the Future We Desire.” Since 1995, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer has been observed on September 16th. The United Nations General Assembly chose this date in its resolution to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987. The ozone layer is a natural part of our atmosphere. It acts as a sun screen by blocking the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Certain chemicals, such as CFCs, HCFCs, and halons, have been shown to deplete the ozone layer. These can cause holes to form in the layer and allow more UV rays to reach the earth’s surface. As a result of ozone depletion, the earth’s temperature will rise, glaciers will melt, cancerous diseases will spread, ocean levels will rise, and many other effects will occur.

Our Queen Azhi Jetsun Pema, Bhutan’s ozone diplomat, is still working hard to ensure that the ozone layer is well protected. As a result, in order to fulfil Her Majesty’s dream of protecting the ozone layer, there are numerous and simple ways in which we can save our ozone layer. Avoid purchasing and using CFC-containing aerosols and sprays. Avoid the use of ozone-depleting fire extinguishers. Choose a CFC-free refrigerator or air conditioner. Use alternative modes of transportation such as buses, bicycles, or simply walking or carpooling. Follow the 4Rs policy at home and school: reduce, reuse, refuse, and recycle. Purchase energy-saving devices and bulbs.

We can all do our part to protect the environment. Before we demand that politicians implement policies to protect the ozone layer, let us start doing something for the environment ourselves.

Finally, let us make the well-known phrase “Any long journey begins with a first step” a part of our daily lives as we work to create a sustainable planet.

Thank you for your time.

World Ozone Day – 16th September

World Ozone Day is celebrated on 16th Sep to highlight the dangers of depleting the ozone layer of the atmosphere. This gas covers the atmosphere and acts as a shield to the world from penetrating the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation to the earth’s surface. These harmful rays are reflected back to the space by the ozone layer for the sake of living being. Rowland and Mario Molina in 1973 established that industrial chemicals called chlorofluoro Carbons (CFCs) were eating away the upper ozone layer. The CFCs are pumped into air conditioners and refrigerators and leaks out directly into the air A CFC is transparent, which means it doesn’t absorb visible radiation and doesn’t rain out because it is insoluble in water. Thus it is inert. But when it reaches into the stratosphere, the upper part of the atmosphere, it encounters a different kind of solar radiation of energetic ultraviolet rays that is absorbed by the ozone layer. Thus an ozone hole, called black hole is created. Through this whole, ultraviolet radiation can enter into the earth’s surface and a number of hazards might take place. Scientists speculate that many types of diseases may occur.

Thus in 1989, the United States and the 12 nation European community agreed to try to get a total ban on CFCs.

Hence by observing the Ozone Day, we became cautious and knew the importance of ozone layer enriching our atmosphere.

“Ozone layer is a shield, Don’t make a hole in it.”
