Benefits of Group Discussion in Online Courses & Learning Communities

While we already mentioned some of the major benefits of group discussions, we just want to highlight the importance of group discussions in online courses and communities.

The purpose of having interesting discussion topics in an online course is to provide opportunities for students to interact with each other, the content, and the instructor.

There are already certain barriers to learning in an online community – such as self-motivation, distractions, and isolation to name a few – which is why it is even more crucial to engage your students in a fun and meaningful way!

Sometimes it’s hard for more traditional classroom experiences to translate nicely to engaging online learning experiences. Introducing new topics to discuss in a group at the beginning of each class could be the key to making your online course effective. This is because social interactions (especially in the online learning community) foster meaningful connections and involvement between your students.

Social elements like incorporating interesting topics to discuss in a group complement online courses because they enable social learning , peer-to-peer support, and student-to-instructor support. They also enable students to hold each other accountable for learning goals while creating a sense of community and belonging.

Adding different topics for group discussion in online learning communities is another great and effective way for students to collaborate and connect with one another. A learning community is a shared place for discussion, so why not spice up your interactions by throwing in some thought-provoking and interesting topics to discuss in a group?

Online vs. in-person group discussion

Now that we’ve covered some of the benefits of group discussions in online courses and communities, let’s discuss whether it is better to have online or in-person group discussions.

We find purpose and accountability in learning communities, regardless if they are from online or in-person group discussions. The style of traditionally learning in a classroom is currently being sidelined as the online classroom learning style has gained popularity in recent years. However, there are some upsides and downsides to each option, which we will cover.

Online group discussion

  • 27% said they have trust in the knowledge of their peers in an online community.
  • 45% said they value diverse opinions. Online communities allow space for a respectful way to learn, and can change the way students see the world.
  • 37% said they appreciate a non-intimidating/judgemental space in an online community.
  • 37% said they value the shared collective experience/pursuit.
  • 52% agree that it’s easier to find others who share interests and passions in a community online vs in-person.
  • People can participate from the comfort of their homes or offices – they don’t need to travel to a classroom, meaning there are also no travel costs or facility rental costs.
  • Students can join in no matter where they are in the world.
  • Participants need to have the correct technology – a computer with a webcam, and typically certain browser configurations. This can limit the population to only people who have this equipment, which narrows down the participant range.
  • It is sometimes difficult with the virtual format to capture the richness of people together in a room, reading each other’s body cues and participating in exercises that require more than just speaking back and forth.

In-person group discussion

  • Non-verbal cues are a rich data source and contribute to how others may respond when people are in the room together.
  • Can incorporate a wider variety of written and brainstorming exercises such as having students team up and sketch out concepts together.
  • The course instructor can pick up on non-verbal cues and facilitate the conversation more personally.
  • There may not be very diverse populations, as people are limited to which area and city the course is being held in.
  • Cost is a prohibitive factor to assembling a group – either because of moderator travel costs or facility rental costs.

Ultimately, the structure of the course – whether it is online or in-person – will depend on the nature of the course itself and the environment that the course instructor thinks will be the most beneficial for their students.

  • Would you rather travel to the past or future?
  • Would you rather speak every language or communicate with animals?
  • Would you rather go on a beach vacation or a ski vacation?
  • Would you rather be invisible or be able to fly?

There are a few topics that you may decide to avoid when having a group discussion. These topics can be controversial, and they can often lead to arguments. Some examples of these topics include:

If you’re not sure whether or not a topic is appropriate for discussion, then it’s always best to err on the side of caution.

Before you start using these topics in your course, how you can approach the group discussion to ensure its success, whether online or in person. Here are a few tips:

Create an inclusive environment

The effective facilitation of a group discussion involves recognizing that there will be many different perspectives and different skills needed to create an inclusive environment.

In order to do so, it’s important to consider the components of effective group discussions and the conditions that promote small group interactions and engagement. Discussion is a powerful technique for active learning, and a well-facilitated discussion allows students to explore new ideas while recognizing and valuing the contributions of others.

To create an inclusive environment…

  • Allow participants to introduce themselves (you can even set up an ice breaker to have pairs of students introduce each other)
  • Be clear about group expectations and intentions
  • Use inclusive language
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if a question or comment is unclear
  • Treat every student with respect and consideration
  • Develop an awareness of barriers to learning (cultural, social, personal)
  • Provide sufficient time and space for students to gather their thoughts and contribute to group discussions
  • Provide opportunities for participants to get into pairs to share their ideas in a one-on-one setting (some students may be more comfortable with this initially)

Create a process to begin and end the group discussion

To ensure that your group discussion is off to a great start, it’s important to have a plan for the conversation. Think about possibly creating an introduction process. This can be as simple as having everyone introduce themselves and their thoughts on the topic at the beginning of class.

Have an idea of how you want to wrap up the discussion, especially if there are time constraints. It may be a good idea to summarize the solid points that were brought up throughout the discussion, and praise everyone for participating. This will help to keep the momentum going for the next group discussion, ensuring that your learning community continues to connect with each other.

Make sure everyone has a chance to speak

When leading a group discussion, the one thing you don’t want happening is for one student to monopolize the conversation completely – the benefit of having a group discussion is to listen and hear everyone’s unique perspective on the topic!

One of the most important aspects of a successful group discussion is making sure that everyone has a chance to share their thoughts and opinions. If certain parties are dominating the discussion, actively call on others as you moderate the discussion to give them the floor. You could even go alphabetically. This is especially useful to help engage students who are more shy and would rather not say anything at all.

Encourage people to ask questions

A great way to get people talking is to encourage student participation. This helps keep the flow of the conversation steady, as well as actively engaging people to listen and think critically.

Getting students to ask or write down follow-up questions to share allows them to voice their own thoughts and opinions. It may also be beneficial for the instructor to initiate some questions to help bring out their students’ ideas further.

Have an open mind

In good group discussions, conflicts will sometimes arise. It’s important to remember that not everyone is going to have the same exact opinion as you, and that’s okay. What’s important is that you’re able to listen to other people’s thoughts and perspectives, and have an open mind.

Keep discussions constructive and positive

At the beginning of each group discussion, clarify the goals of each discussion and establish some of the ground rules for the group.

This can include:

  • Allowing all students time to speak
  • Sharing personal experiences rather than making general statements about groups of people (stereotyping)
  • Encouraging others to add their reactions or ideas to build on someone’s comment
  • Keeping discussions on track by listing the questions to cover on the board or in the chat, and summarizing the discussion as it proceeds

Plan topics for group discussions that will resonate with your students

When you’re planning your group discussion, make sure to choose topics that will resonate with your community to ensure that the discussion will be engaging and beneficial for everyone involved.

Perhaps at the end of class, you can ask everyone to leave a question that they would like to discuss the next time you all meet together.

Identify potential problems in group discussions

It’s probable that not all group discussions will go smoothly, depending on the group and the nature of the topic.

Some potential problems in group discussions include:

  • Disengaged students. If you have members who are no longer active in your community, try to engage them by sending them private messages or starting a discussion on a topic that they’re interested in. Also provide opportunities for smaller group discussions.
  • Students who talk too much. Try redirecting the discussion to another person or another topic. Alternatively, you may wish to reframe their comments, making them viable additions to the discussion.
  • A discussion that turns into an argument. The course instructor may need to take a strong position as moderator, preventing students from interrupting each other or speaking simultaneously. Also, they could list both sides of the argument, allowing for respectful rebuttals.

Give students feedback

Let your students know how they did in the group discussion. Offering individual constructive feedback can help your students feel more included and motivated to participate even more during the next group discussion.

Create discussion forums

Discussion forums are essential to learning communities because they give students a place to keep the conversation going and generate more ideas on the topic. Discussion forums also help foster connection and engagement between your students.

Creating an Engaging Online Community with Group Discussions

Online communities can be a great way to bring your students together in one place where they can discuss course content, apply their learnings, and ask questions. This also helps you get a pulse check on what your audience wants to learn from you.

When building an online community, it’s important to outline community guidelines —helping to improve communication, avoid conflict, and prevent chaos in your community.

Group discussion can be a great way to build an online community if you can get students talking and thinking about different topics. Just remember to keep an open mind, be respectful, and make sure that everyone has a chance to speak. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to having a successful group discussion.

Tips for Leading a Small Group Discussion

group, team, balloons

1. Setting Clear Objectives and Expectations

When leading a small group discussion , it’s important to begin by setting clear objectives and expectations. Clearly communicate the purpose of the discussion and what you hope to achieve. By setting specific goals, participants will have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and can actively contribute to the conversation. For example, if the objective is to brainstorm solutions to a problem, clearly state that you want participants to generate creative ideas and encourage them to think outside the box.

2. Creating a Safe and Respectful Environment

To ensure a productive and inclusive discussion, it is crucial to create a safe and respectful environment. Foster a sense of trust and openness by encouraging all participants to share their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment or ridicule. Use inclusive language and actively listen to each participant, valuing their input. Make it clear that everyone’s perspective is valued and that the discussion should be a space for respectful dialogue. By creating this environment, participants can freely express their ideas and engage in meaningful conversation.

3. Encouraging Active Participation and Listening

As the discussion leader, it is important to encourage active participation and listening from all participants. Rather than dominating the conversation, facilitate dialogue and give space for others to contribute. Use open-ended questions to encourage participants to think critically and share their insights. Actively listen to what participants say, paraphrase their points to ensure understanding, and provide positive reinforcement for their contributions. By fostering active participation and attentive listening, you create an engaging and inclusive atmosphere where all voices are heard.

4. Managing Time Effectively

Time management is crucial in leading a small group discussion. Set a schedule and allocate time for different discussion topics or activities. Clearly communicate the time limits for each segment and gently guide the conversation if it veers off track. Ensure that everyone has a chance to participate without the discussion dragging on excessively. Use time management techniques such as setting a timer or providing gentle reminders to stay on schedule.

5. Summarizing and Synthesizing Key Points

Throughout the discussion, actively summarize and synthesize the key points raised by participants. This helps keep the conversation focused and highlights important insights. By summarizing, you can clarify any misconceptions and provide a seamless flow to the discussion. Summarizing also demonstrates active listening and validates participants’ contributions. Use clear and concise language to ensure that the summary is easily understood and remembered by all participants.

6. Flexibility and Adaptability

Be prepared to adapt your plans and structure if the discussion takes unexpected turns. Flexibility is key when leading a small group discussion as new insights and ideas may emerge. Encourage the exploration of different perspectives and allow for organic discussions. It’s important to strike a balance between guiding the conversation and allowing for spontaneity and adaptability.

Remember, as the leader of the discussion, your role is to facilitate rather than control the conversation. Keep the paragraphs short and concise to enhance readability and engagement. Use an active voice in your communication to convey confidence and assertiveness in your role as the discussion leader.

In conclusion, by setting clear objectives, creating a safe environment, encouraging participation and active listening, managing time effectively , summarizing key points, and being flexible, you can keep small group discussions engaging and productive. Choose relevant topics to inspire creativity and foster connections among participants. Whether in a professional, educational, or social setting, these tips will help you create a vibrant space for collaborative dialogue.

Top 10 Group Discussion Tips You Should Use in Your Next Interview

The Group Discussion, commonly referred to as GD, is a crucial elimination round in an interview process that candidates need to be a part of after clearing their aptitude test or the written exam.

A vital component in any screening process, GD involves the participation of a group of people who are asked to debate and discuss different aspects of a topic given by the interviewers.

Regardless of whether you are looking at getting into a top-notch college or applying for a job, the group discussion round is something that you will have to face in order to get one step closer to realizing your dream.

Although many candidates freeze at the thought of how they will present themselves in a group discussion, in reality, the group discussion round is not as dreaded as it seems if you master the tried and tested tricks that help crack GDs.

Master group discussions with these tips and accelerate your career. Check the video for easy to implement tricks.

In this article, we share with you some practical tips and strategies that will set you up for success in group discussions. But before we get into that, let's help you understand why the GD round is so essential.

The group discussion round is critical because it allows interviewers to analyze candidates on a variety of parameters, including their level of confidence, teamwork qualities, communication, leadership, analytical, and logical skills .

So, now that you know what GD is and why it is important from an interviewer's perspective check out the top eight tips for group discussion below that you should definitely apply in your next interview.

Experts advise that you research popular topics related to your field before taking part in a group discussion. While it is not possible to keep track of all topics under the sun, you should nevertheless have a clear understanding of matters that are closely linked to your educational or professional background.

Besides having fair knowledge of the core subjects in your domain, you must also be well-versed in some common group discussion topics that relate to today's social and economic environment, emerging technologies, or current affairs.

Common Group Discussion Topics for Interviews:

1) Role of Technology in Today's World 2) Impact of Social Media 3) Climate Change and Environmental Conservation 4) Leadership Styles 5) Remote Work 6) Ethical Dilemmas in Business 7) Gender Equality in the Workplace 8) Education System Reforms 9) Healthcare Reforms 10) Artificial Intelligence and Job Displacement 11) The impact of Coronavirus on the world economy 12) Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace 13) Diversity and Inclusion in Corporate Culture

Keep in mind that having basic knowledge about the subject of discussion is important, but what's even more important is how you convey your understanding of the subject to the interviewers and other members of the group discussion. Therefore, prior to appearing for your GD, make sure you work on your presentation skills.

The right time to initiate a conversation is paramount in a group discussion. Some people believe that speaking first helps grab the attention of the interviewer, but that is not always the case because it can backfire as well.

You can speak first if you have valuable information or statistics that are relevant to the topic, but otherwise, it is advisable to speak during intervals in between conversations.

If you are uncertain or confused about the subject of the discussion, listen to other participants, and then rephrase your response accordingly.

My experience with Simplilearn has been great till now. They have good materials to start with, and a wide range of courses. I have signed up for two courses with Simplilearn over the past 6 months, Data Scientist and Agile and Scrum. My experience with both is good. One unique feature I liked about Simplilearn is that they give pre-requisites that you should complete, before a live class, so that you go there fully prepared. Secondly, there support staff is superb. I believe there are two teams, to cater to the Indian and US time zones. Simplilearn gives you the most methodical and easy way to up-skill yourself. Also, when you compare the data analytics courses across the market that offer web-based tutorials, Simplilearn, scores over the rest in my opinion. Great job, Simplilearn!

During the course of a group discussion, be aware of what you say and how you say it. You will find many participants in a group discussion with views that differ from your own. You must respect their opinions and communicate your perspective assertively, not aggressively.

Remember, at no time should you get angry and yell. Controlling your emotions and staying calm will make you look more confident.

Below are some phrases you can use to express your opinion in a gracious manner.

If you do not agree with someone, you can say - "I respect your viewpoint, but I disagree. I hold a completely different opinion."

When you agree with someone, you can use the phrase - "I am in agreement with you; I also have the same point of view."

Other than the above two scenarios, you could be in situations where you partially disagree with someone. In such situations, say something like - "I agree with you to some extent, but I do not fully support your position."

If you need to intervene at some point, do so by saying - "I am sorry, I would like to interrupt you there".

To contribute to an ongoing discussion, you may say - "Apart from that, I wish to add ..."

The use of appropriate phrases, such as those mentioned above, illustrates your willingness to accept other viewpoints while you stand by yours.

Remember that the purpose of group discussions is to evaluate a candidate's personality, behavior, and interpersonal skills. Thus, it is important to remain positive and confident throughout the GD session.

What matters in a group discussion is how well you present your views and how convincing your arguments are to the interviewers and other group members. It is crucial to speak with absolute clarity, not only to get your point across but also to leave a positive impression through your speech.

To improve your vocal clarity, check out some simple exercises on YouTube that will enable you to deliver a clearer speech.

Another point to keep in mind is to not sit back after making your opening comment. Make an entry into the discussion whenever you think it is appropriate to do so, using the phrases in the previous section.

Listening skills are vital in a group discussion. Listening not just helps understand the topic of discussion, but it is also an indication of how respectful you are.

Listen carefully when others are speaking, and then frame your response. Also, nod your head and make brief eye contact with the speakers. This shows that you are actively taking part in the discussion.

All good speakers are great listeners, and to be successful in group discussions, you must likewise develop superb listening skills.

Body language is a form of non-verbal communication. It is gaining more and more prominence in recent times as it plays a critical role in defining an individual's personality , level of confidence, and leadership qualities.

Be aware that everything you do, from entering the room to the way you speak, sit, and react, will be monitored. So dress professionally, sit up straight, keep your cool, and never appear tense.

YouTube has many videos on body language. Watch some of these videos to perfect the art of manipulating your audience with body language.

To avoid straying from the topic, try to limit your attention to the content of your speech rather than its length. If the discussion drifts off-topic, make an effort to bring the discussion back on track. Attempting to keep the group on the subject will demonstrate your leadership skills to the interviewers.

Summarizing the whole group discussion and highlighting the most important points will enable you to capture the attention of the interviewers. Keep your summary relevant and short. In addition, make sure to present an impartial summary, not a biased one.

Many times participants in the Group Discussion present their ideas in an aggressive manner to create an impact on the group. What they don’t know is that shouting and being aggressive can get them negative points.

The last group discussion tip is to make multiple entries in your session. You can enter the discussion multiple times if you have a strong answer to other participant’s opinions. This will strengthen your viewpoint.

GD is a collaborative discussion that involves a group of people. Participants play a role in these discussions. Your GD role can impact your chances of getting selected. Choose your role smartly.

  • Opener - The candidate who initiates the group discussion is an opener or a beginner. As they go first, there is very little time for them to prepare their arguments. Volunteer for this position only if you know the topic well.
  • Facilitator / Moderator - A facilitator or moderator ensures that no participant is getting interrupted while making arguments. They also make sure participants are following the rules properly.
  • Seeker of Information - These group discussion participants are not aware of the topic and look for arguments in statements made by others.
  • Opinion Seeker - This person has no stand, they look for an opportunity to accumulate information and create an opinion.
  • Analyst - They analyses and clarifies the arguments and opinions discussed during the group discussion.
  • Community Supporter - These individuals in a group discussion do not have any strong opinion. They support everyone in the discussion.
  • Reliever -  They witness the problem with a broader perspective.
  • Energy spreader -  These group discussion participants are active and indirectly motivate others to speak up.
  • Bridge creator - They concentrate on coming to a common ground and find an optimum solution to the given problem.
  • Summary maker - This GD participant is responsible for concluding the discussion.

Researching different topics for group discussions, improving your communication skills, and having mock GDs with your friends and family will increase your chances of being selected, but to seal the deal, consider getting yourself certified from an industry-recognized institution, such as Simplilearn.

The world's #1 online Bootcamp and certification course provider, Simplilearn, has introduced a SkillUp program that is helping thousands of people achieve their dreams. No matter what your stream is, with Simplilearn's SkillUp program, you can master today's most sought-after skills without paying a cent.
