A Johns Hopkins postdoc, Herbert Baxter Adams, brought the seminar method of teaching from Germany, where he earned a PhD in 1876. The idea: That students would learn more by doing than by listening to lectures and taking exams.
That spirit of inquiry , of challenging the way things are done, lives on today in our nine academic divisions, all of which offer full-time graduate programs.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.
Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.
How do I know which program is right for me?
There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.
The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program
The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.
The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research
The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

PhD Admissions
The PhD program in Psychology trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program is characterized by close collaboration between students and their faculty advisors.
General Information
The Department of Psychology holistically reviews each candidate's complete application to assess the promise of a career in teaching and research. Consideration is based on various factors, including courses taken, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. Additionally, the Department of Psychology places considerable emphasis on research training, and admitted students have often been involved in independent research as undergraduate students or post-baccalaureate settings. Although there are no course requirements for admission, all applicants should have sufficient foundational knowledge and research experience to engage in graduate-level coursework and research.
We accept students with undergraduate degrees and those with both undergraduate and master's degrees. An undergraduate psychology major is not required; the Department welcomes applicants from other academic backgrounds.

Graduate studies, commencement 2019.
The Harvard Department of Physics offers students innovative educational and research opportunities with renowned faculty in state-of-the-art facilities, exploring fundamental problems involving physics at all scales. Our primary areas of experimental and theoretical research are atomic and molecular physics, astrophysics and cosmology, biophysics, chemical physics, computational physics, condensed-matter physics, materials science, mathematical physics, particle physics, quantum optics, quantum field theory, quantum information, string theory, and relativity.
Our talented and hardworking students participate in exciting discoveries and cutting-edge inventions such as the ATLAS experiment, which discovered the Higgs boson; building the first 51-cubit quantum computer; measuring entanglement entropy; discovering new phases of matter; and peering into the ‘soft hair’ of black holes.
Our students come from all over the world and from varied educational backgrounds. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment and attracting the widest possible range of talents.
We have a flexible and highly responsive advising structure for our PhD students that shepherds them through every stage of their education, providing assistance and counseling along the way, helping resolve problems and academic impasses, and making sure that everyone has the most enriching experience possible. The graduate advising team also sponsors alumni talks, panels, and advice sessions to help students along their academic and career paths in physics and beyond, such as “Getting Started in Research,” “Applying to Fellowships,” “Preparing for Qualifying Exams,” “Securing a Post-Doc Position,” and other career events (both academic and industry-related).
We offer many resources, services, and on-site facilities to the physics community, including our electronic instrument design lab and our fabrication machine shop. Our historic Jefferson Laboratory, the first physics laboratory of its kind in the nation and the heart of the physics department, has been redesigned and renovated to facilitate study and collaboration among our students.
Members of the Harvard Physics community participate in initiatives that bring together scientists from institutions across the world and from different fields of inquiry. For example, the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms unites a community of scientists from both institutions to pursue research in the new fields opened up by the creation of ultracold atoms and quantum gases. The Center for Integrated Quantum Materials , a collaboration between Harvard University, Howard University, MIT, and the Museum of Science, Boston, is dedicated to the study of extraordinary new quantum materials that hold promise for transforming signal processing and computation. The Harvard Materials Science and Engineering Center is home to an interdisciplinary group of physicists, chemists, and researchers from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences working on fundamental questions in materials science and applications such as soft robotics and 3D printing. The Black Hole Initiative , the first center worldwide to focus on the study of black holes, is an interdisciplinary collaboration between principal investigators from the fields of astronomy, physics, mathematics, and philosophy. The quantitative biology initiative https://quantbio.harvard.edu/ aims to bring together physicists, biologists, engineers, and applied mathematicians to understand life itself. And, most recently, the new program in Quantum Science and Engineering (QSE) , which lies at the interface of physics, chemistry, and engineering, will admit its first cohort of PhD students in Fall 2022.
We support and encourage interdisciplinary research and simultaneous applications to two departments is permissible. Prospective students may thus wish to apply to the following departments and programs in addition to Physics:
- Department of Astronomy
- Department of Chemistry
- Department of Mathematics
- John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)
- Biophysics Program
- Molecules, Cells and Organisms Program (MCO)

Psychology Graduate Program
- Psychology Department
The Clinical Psychology Program adheres to a clinical science model of training, and is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science. We are committed to training clinical psychologists whose research advances scientific knowledge of psychopathology and its treatment, and who are capable of applying evidence-based methods of assessment and clinical intervention. The main emphasis of the program is research, especially on severe psychopathology. The program includes research, course work, and clinical practica, and usually takes five years to complete. Students typically complete assessment and treatment practica during their second and third years in the program, and they must fulfill all departmental requirements prior to beginning their one-year internship. The curriculum meets the requirements for licensure in Massachusetts, accreditation requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA; Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242, apaaccred.org , Tel. [202] 336-5979), and accreditation requirements of the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS). PCSAS re-accredited the program on December 15, 2022 for a 10-year term. APA most recently accredited the program on April 28, 2015 for a seven-year term, which was extended due to COVID-related delays.
Requirements
Required courses and training experiences fulfill requirements for clinical psychology licensure in Massachusetts as well as meet APA criteria for the accreditation of clinical psychology programs. In addition to these courses, further training experiences are required in accordance with the American Psychological Association’s guidelines for the accreditation of clinical psychology programs (e.g., clinical practica [e.g., PSY 3050 Clinical Practicum, PSY 3080 Practicum in Neuropsychological Assessment]; clinical internship).
Students in the clinical psychology program are required to take the following courses:
- PSY 3900 Professional Ethics
- PSY 2445 Psychotherapy Research
- PSY 2070 Psychometric Theory and Method Using R
- PSY 2430 Cultural, Racial, and Ethnic Bases of Behavior
- PSY 3250 Psychological Testing
- PSY 2050 History of Psychology
- PSY 1951 Intermediate Quantitative Methods
- PSY 1952 Multivariate Analysis in Psychology
- PSY 2040 Contemporary Topics in Psychopathology
- PSY 2460 Diagnostic Interviewing
- PSY 2420 Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Psychological Disorders
Clinical students must also take one course in each of the following substantive areas: biological bases of behavior (e.g., PSY 1202 Modern Neuroanatomy; PSY 1325 The Emotional, Social Brain; PSY 1355 The Adolescent Brain; PSY 1702 The Emotional Mind); social bases of behavior (e.g., PSY 2500 Proseminar in Social Psychology); cognitive-affective bases of behavior (e.g., PSY 2400 Cognitive Psychology and Emotional Disorders); and individual differences (Required course PSY 2040 Contemporary Topics in Psychopathology fulfills the individual differences requirement for Massachusetts licensure). In accordance with American Psychological Association guidelines for the accreditation of clinical psychology programs, clinical students also receive consultation and supervision within the context of clinical practica in psychological assessment and treatment beginning in their second semester of their first year and running through their third year. They receive further exposure to additional topics (e.g., human development) in the Developmental Psychopathology seminar and in the twice-monthly clinical psychology “brown bag” speaker series. Finally, students complete a year-long clinical internship. Students are responsible for making sure that they take courses in all the relevant and required areas listed above. Students wishing to substitute one required course for another should seek advice from their advisor and from the director of clinical training prior to registering. During the first year, students are advised to get in as many requirements as possible. Many requirements can be completed before the deadlines stated below. First-year project: Under the guidance of a faculty member who serves as a mentor, students participate in a research project and write a formal report on their research progress. Due by May of first year. Second-year project: Original research project leading to a written report in the style of an APA journal article. A ten-minute oral presentation is also required. Due by May of second year. General exam: A six-hour exam covering the literature of the field. To be taken in September before the start of the third year. Thesis prospectus: A written description of the research proposed must be approved by a prospectus committee appointed by the CHD. Due at the beginning of the fourth year. Thesis and oral defense: Ordinarily this would be completed by the end of the fourth year. Clinical internship: Ordinarily this would occur in the fifth year. Students must have completed their thesis research prior to going on internship.
Credit for Prior Graduate Work
A PhD student who has completed at least one full term of satisfactory work in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may file an application at the Registrar’s Office requesting that work done in a graduate program elsewhere be counted toward the academic residence requirement. Forms are available online .
No more than the equivalent of eight half-courses may be so counted for the PhD.
An application for academic credit for work done elsewhere must contain a list of the courses, with grades, for which the student is seeking credit, and must be approved by the student’s department. In order for credit to be granted, official transcripts showing the courses for which credit is sought must be submitted to the registrar, unless they are already on file with the Graduate School. No guarantee is given in advance that such an application will be granted.
Only courses taken in a Harvard AB-AM or AB-SM program, in Harvard Summer School, as a GSAS Special Student or FAS courses taken as an employee under the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) may be counted toward the minimum academic residence requirements for a Master’s degree.
Academic and financial credit for courses taken as a GSAS Special Student or FAS courses taken as a Harvard employee prior to admission to a degree program may be granted for a maximum of four half-courses toward a one-year Master’s and eight half-courses toward a two-year Master’s or the PhD degree.
Applications for academic and financial credit must be approved by the student’s department and should then be submitted to the Registrar’s Office.

- Programs & Requirements
Brown University awards more than 200 doctor of philosophy degrees annually.
The Brown Ph.D. is primarily a research degree. Teaching is an important part of many doctoral programs, and many departments require candidates for the Ph.D. to have teaching experience.
Brown University offers substantial financial support to doctoral students. All incoming doctoral students are guaranteed five years of support, which includes a stipend, full tuition remission, health-services fee, and a health-insurance subsidy. Doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences are guaranteed six years of support. All promises of student support are subject to students making satisfactory academic progress, as determined by their programs of study. Please see related links for additional details regarding the University's commitment to doctoral education.
Ph.D. Funding
Funding guarantee, four general requirements for the doctor of philosophy.
The candidate must be formally admitted to his or her degree program.
The normal residency requirement is the equivalent of three Academic Years of full-time study beyond the bachelor's degree. Students who enter a PhD program at Brown already holding a master’s degree in a related field have a residency requirement equivalent to two Academic Years of full-time study upon entering the PhD program at Brown. Use of a previously earned master’s degree to reduce PhD residency requirements is contingent upon approval of the program Director of Graduate Study. Graduate work done at other institutions and not used in fulfillment of the requirements for any doctoral degree elsewhere may, on the approval of the program Director of Graduate Study, be counted in fulfillment of up to, but not exceeding, one year of the residency requirement. A student who desires credit for work done elsewhere should file a timely application with the program Director of Graduate Study; transfer credit forms are available through the Office of the Registrar .
A student is advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. when he or she has completed satisfactorily all the requirements, departmental and general, requisite to beginning work on the dissertation. Candidacy is determined by the department or program of study and certified by the Registrar. Most departments require a preliminary examination before advancing any student to candidacy. Most departments also require a final examination or defense. The examination is conducted by professors in the department and by such other members of the faculty as may be appointed.
The candidate must present a dissertation on a topic related to his or her area of specialization that presents the results of original research and gives evidence of excellent scholarship. The dissertation must be approved by the professor or committee under whose direction it is written and by the Graduate Council. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed within five years after advancement to candidacy.
Faculty Member Leaves Brown
If a faculty member working with a doctoral student leaves Brown for any reason before that student has completed his or her degree requirements, it may not always be possible for that faculty member to continue working with the student as an advisor. In such cases, departments will work with students to help them locate a new advisor.
Additional Requirements
Individual departments and programs may have additional requirements regarding the number of courses to be taken, proficiency in foreign languages, special examinations, and theses. The department should be consulted for specific information.
Doctoral Degrees
A doctoral degree requires the satisfactory completion of an approved program of advanced study and original research of high quality..
Please note that the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Science (ScD) degrees are awarded interchangeably by all departments in the School of Engineering and the School of Science, except in the fields of biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical engineering, and medical physics. This means that, excepting the departments outlined above, the coursework and expectations to earn a Doctor of Philosophy and for a Doctor of Science degree from these schools are generally the same. Doctoral students may choose which degree they wish to complete.
Applicants interested in graduate education should apply to the department or graduate program conducting research in the area of interest. Some departments require a doctoral candidate to take a “minor” program outside of the student’s principal field of study; if you wish to apply to one of these departments, please consider additional fields you may like to pursue.

Doctoral programs.
The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.
In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.
The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

For a s long as she can remember, Camille Goldm o n has loved reading about history. Her own research interests lie in modern US history. Goldmon specifically examines African American farmers in the US South. Traditionally, she explains, land ownership has been a way to guarantee freedom and exercise the rights of full citizenship. However, many Black farmers have faced systemic barriers and challenges to owning and keeping land. This is a history Goldmon’s own family has lived, including her father. “I come from a long line of farmers. I wanted to know about what they’ve dealt with, how they’ve dealt with it, and, frankly, why they’ve continued to farm,” she says.

New online graduate pharmacometrics program accommodates working professionals
In her role of director of online programs at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Carrie Hoefer created two new online graduate programs: pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy, which begins this fall, and pharmaceutical sciences, which will launch in fall 2025. By Laurie Kaiser
Release Date: July 31, 2024
BUFFALO, N.Y. — When Carrie Hoefer became director of online programs at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in January 2023, her main goal was to get an online version of the pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy (PPP) graduate program up and running by fall 2024.
With 13 students currently enrolled for the 2024-25 academic year, almost three times the number for the on-campus program, she appears to have achieved her goal.
“We already have a wonderful PPP program on campus that really hits a lot of the boxes for students who recently earned their undergraduate degrees in biology or chemistry or pharmacy,” said Hoefer, PhD, who also serves as associate dean for undergraduate programs and as a clinical assistant professor in the pharmacy school. “I really wanted to create an asynchronous online program for working professionals across the country and even other parts of the world.”
PPP is a rather niche discipline that includes pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), the study of how drugs move through the body and how the body responds to specific drugs, respectively.
Fewer than half of U.S. pharmacy schools include these two subsets of pharmaceutical science and only one other institution in the country — the University of Maryland — offers an online master’s degree in pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy, Hoefer pointed out.
Two new online programs in two years
Enrollment in UB’s online master’s program represents a nearly three-fold increase over the campus version of PPP , which began in 2018 under the direction of SUNY Distinguished Professor William Jusko, PhD. Hoefer credits this due to the program’s ability to recruit graduate students from across the country.
“We are seeing the online PPP program attract everyone from recent graduates to working pharmacists and even medical doctors who want to gain expertise in this discipline,” Hoefer said.
Hoefer also created a two-year online graduate program in pharmaceutical sciences that will launch in fall 2025. This master’s program, which immerses students in diverse aspects of drug action — from drug discovery to drug evaluation — also aims to attract more professionals who need the flexibility of an asynchronous online program.
“We are so pleased with the work that Dr. Hoefer has accomplished in just a short time,” said Gary M. Pollack , PhD, dean and professor of the pharmacy school. “She is helping our pharmacy school continue on its upward trajectory with in-demand offerings and increased enrollment. Both the pharmaceutical sciences and the pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy programs will create a pipeline for current research professionals, as we well as new graduates, to advance career opportunities in drug discovery, evaluation and development.”
Individualized drug treatment
“At UB, we’re very well known for pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics,” Hoefer said.
Pharmacometrics goes a step further with more quantitative modeling for a drug’s journey through the body.
“Pharmacometrics is really tracking everything to do with taking medication — from being absorbed in your body to being distributed, metabolized and excreted,” Hoefer explained. “It exams the link between biology, the physiology of an individual, and pharmacology to design more individualized dosage regimens of not only current prescription medications, but also those currently in clinical trials.”
The growing popularity of genomics and DNA ancestry tests such as 23andMe dovetail with this branch of pharmacy, which is more focused on how drugs affect an individual.
“It makes sense to focus on an individual’s DNA manual and how that manual of the body can have different responses to the drug,” Hoefer said.
The overall model of the drug can continue to be individualized based on multiple co-variables, such as age and ethnicity.
Pharmacometrics, she explained, combines multiple facets of drug design, development and trial information to aid in regulatory decisions and to predict undesired side effects of adverse drug reactions.
New micro-credential, too
Having expertise in the PPP discipline makes graduates more attractive to employers.
“Companies are seeking our students because we are the powerhouse of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and now pharmacometrics, and this new program encompasses all of it,” Hoefer said. “A lot of employers are looking for individuals who have this pharmacometrics background because it’s looking at each stage of the drug development process in a quantitative way.”
The pharmacy school also offers a micro-credential program in pharmacometrics modeling, which provides a snippet of the graduate program over three semesters. A dozen students began this micro-credential in spring 2024 and are currently on their way to becoming the first cohort to earn this new micro-credential. Several students are considering continuing on with the master’s in PPP following their completion of the micro-credential, Hoefer added.
“What we’re seeing with our online programs are people who really want to move up in their jobs or excel in their careers,” she said. “They just need that additional certificate or diploma that says, ‘I’m an expert in this.’”
