Official name announced for new primary school in Piara Waters

  • New primary school for Perth's southern suburbs officially named Riva Primary School
  • Community consulted on four options, with the most popular name announced today
  • The $26.2 million school will officially open in 2022

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has today revealed the official name for Piara Waters' newest primary school as Riva Primary School.

Riva Primary School was the popular choice among the local community who participated in a survey during the consultation process.

When complete, the $26.2 million school will accommodate 540 students from kindergarten to Year 6 and will officially open in 2022.

The new school will feature five classroom blocks, an early childhood building, administration facilities and a library, as well as education support facilities for children with disability.

Students will enjoy a covered assembly area; an art, music and science block; and a hard court sports area.

The official name reflects the school's physical address on Riva Entrance in Piara Waters.

Riva Primary School is one of a number of schools built by the McGowan Labor Government in the Piara Waters area, including Aspiri Primary School, opened in 2019; and Piara Waters Secondary School, opening in 2023.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"I am pleased to announce Riva Primary School as the official name for the newest primary school in Perth's southern suburbs.

"Riva translates from Italian as meaning by the shore or the shoreline. As the school is located in Piara Waters, this name honours the street, the suburb and represents the harmony of the school."

As stated by Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai:

"It is really exciting to see our new primary school in Piara Waters now has an official name.

"Riva Primary School will be a state-of-the-art facility and having just started construction at Piara Waters Secondary School, students in the area will have access to the best public education right through their schooling."

SCHOOL PLAY AREAS

Kindergarten and Pre-Primary

Kindergarten and Pre-primary children play inside the fenced area outside the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary classrooms.

A number of teachers and education assistants are on duty in these areas at recess and lunch, ensuring the school meets the National Quality Standard for supervision of Kindergarten children of 1 adult for every 10 children.

The area is divided into different play stations, which each support the growth and development of Kindergarten and Pre-Primary children.

Year 1 to Year 6

Year 1 to Year 6 children have a number of scheduled play areas each day. Children may then choose from these areas where the will play at recess and lunch.

Areas are allocated to students in one or two year levels. This enables games to be appropriate to a child’s development and for students to be more easily able to find their friends. Staff on duty in these play areas are familiar with the students.

Each term, we will rotate the play areas. You can find the play area maps for each term below:
