Spooky Witch’s brew science experiment {Halloween activity for kids}

There’s something special about Halloween season. Kids will love this spooky witches brew Halloween activity. They won’t even realize they’re doing a science experiment at the same time.

Use this fun and easy activity as a STEM project for classroom or at home learning. Have it as an activity at a party. Or just use it for an afternoon of witch themed fun with your kids!

This bubbling cauldron is a perfect STEM activity for Halloween. Kids can experiment using different combinations of ingredients and different amounts to see what results they get.

This activity can get quite messy. You’ll want to put a baking pan underneath and/or do it outside, on a tile floor, or in the bathtub. Basically, somewhere you can easily wash away the mess when your kids are all done creating!

Witch potion making supplies

witchs brew ingredients

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar (for each color)
  • 1/4 to 1 cup baking soda
  • Various colors of food coloring
  • Witches cauldrons

Make sure you have extra supplies on hand. My daughter had a blast doing this project and wanted to do it again and again! We went through 2 bottles of vinegar before I finally called it a day.

How to make your bubbling witch’s cauldron

1 – Mix vinegar and food coloring in small cups (separate cup for each color)

mix vinegar and food coloring

2 – Pour baking soda into the cauldrons (or whatever container you want to use for the explosion/reaction). Start with about a teaspoon.

baking soda in witch cauldron

3 – Pour one color of vinegar over the baking soda and watch your witch potion brew!

pour vinegar into baking soda to create bubbling cauldron

4 – Stirring it a bit will create a bigger eruption.

You MUST mix these in an open container. If you mix them in a container with a lid they could explode the container.

Learning Opportunities

This activity is a great introduction to basic science. They can try lots of different things and see which works the best and creates the best witch potion.

Try different amounts of baking soda

How do you make a bigger eruption? Does more baking soda make a difference? Does how fast you poor in the vinegar make a difference? How about stirring?

witch's brew science experiment

Try other items

Let them try different substances to see if they’ll create a reaction. What happens if you replace baking soda with salt, sugar, coffee, etc.

Do not mix your vinegar with bleach or hydrogen peroxide (not that I think you’re likely to let your kids experiment with those.)

To be safe do a quick Google search for the items you want to mix with vinegar to ensure they won’t cause any safety issues.

You can also do the reverse and try pouring other liquids over the baking soda to see if they react. As before, make sure your combinations aren’t going to cause any issues.

Try making a rainbow

Try to make a rainbow potion. We achieved it a few times by dropping food coloring on the dry baking soda, 3-4 colors in different areas of the baking soda.

Then pour the vinegar over top and we actually saw the colors come out separately, it was cool to watch.

Have fun! We’d love to see your witch potions. Share a photo below or tag us on Instagram @totschoolresources

Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

Witches’ brew fizzy Halloween STEAM experiment is a great way to bring science and Halloween together over a bubbling cauldron! This simple to set up STEAM idea is the perfect activity for home or in the classroom this Halloween. So put on your witches’ hat and test out your best cackle for this fun Fall science idea!

Witches' Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM

Creating a witches’ brew experiment at home is one of those super easy kitchen science experiments, every child should experience especially during Halloween. When I set this up for my kids, they absolute loved it. Baking soda fizzy experiments are always a massive hit on our house. The colours, the smells, the sounds and the bubbles! This fun and easy chemical reaction was equal parts science and sensory!

Science for All Ages

One of the great things about this activity is that its safe for toddlers and preschoolers but exciting enough to entertain older grade school age kids as well! The main ingredients for this chemical reaction are baking soda and vinegar, common kitchen household items that is easily available at the grocery store.

Science Behind the Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

What happens when you combine baking soda with vinegar? Fizz ! But why does this happen with two seemingly common ingredients. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When an acid and a base mix they produce a gas called carbon dioxide.

How to Make the Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

  • Grab black plastic witches’ cauldrons. Find a link to purchase them in the supplies section below.

Witches' Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

  • Add some baking soda to the cauldrons. The exact measurements aren’t needed. Making it the perfect activity for toddlers and preschoolers. Invite them to spoon in the baking soda – 2-4 spoon fulls are good but more or less is ok too.

bubbling brew experiment

  • Add several drops of green, purple, orange or black food colouring in each cauldrons, respectively, deepening on how many you have. To make the explosion larger and foamier, add few drops of bubble bath to the cauldrons as well. Again the exact measures aren’t needed. The more bubble bath you add the larger the reaction so be prepared!

Witches' Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

  • Fill a squeeze bottle with vinegar. You can mix in some water in order to make your vinegar go further. Mix 1/3 water with 2/3 vinegar.

bubbling brew experiment

  • Squeeze the vinegar into the cauldrons and watch it erupt with green, orange purple or black bubbling brew! My kids loved this part!!

Witches' Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment

How the Played

My kids adored loved this idea (as they do with all the fizzy activities we do) they honestly can’t get enough! I let me kids add all of the ingredients so they added lots and lots of bubble bath. The result was a massive foamy bubbly brew erupting on our tray. They of course got their hands in there at the end of the experiment when all the vinegar was exhausted. Because every good witch knows sometimes you have to mix those ingredients by hand!

Witches Brew Science Experiment With Kids

bubbling brew experiment

Would you like a great way to get your kids excited about STEM this Halloween? This Witches Brew Science Experiment is sure to be a hit!

Double double, toil, and trouble. Halloween is such a fun holiday for kids because it really ignites their imagination. One of the most quintessential Halloween characters is, of course, the witch. You can just imagine the witch in the middle of the forest, mixing up her potions and witches brew.

Only you don’t have to just imagine it. You and your kids can actually make some witches brew of your own! This is a fantastic STEM activity to do with your kids and it will totally get them excited about science.. and about Halloween!

The fun thing about this witches brew science experiment is that it is ridiculously easy to create but the effects will have everyone oooh-ing and awe-ing.

What you will need to do the Witches Brew Science Experiment:

witches brew science experiment

  • ½ cup white vinegar for each color
  • ¼ to 1 cup baking soda
  • Food coloring, in various colors (make sure to try purple, green, blue, orange, and red!)
  • Caudron Kettles ( you can pick some up from Amazon )
  • Small cups to mix the vinegar and food coloring
  • A spoon for the baking soda
  • Optional: a tray or cookie sheet to contain the mess… because this science experiment will get messy

This witches brew science experiment is totally safe for kids. None of the ingredients are toxic, even if kids somehow end up swallowing some of it. But this activity has a defintie mess factor.. especially if you are doing it with younger kids.

Unless you want stained clothes, I would have kids put on a smock or old clothes before doing this activity.

How to conduct this experiment:

1. In individual cups, mix food coloring with vinegar.

2. Add baking soda to the cauldron or whatever container you have.

3. Pour one color of vinegar over the baking soda and watch the eruption.

4. To create a more continuous eruption, stir the baking soda with a popsicle stick or spoon as more vinegar is added.

The Science Behind it!

When you mix baking soda with vinegar, a chemical reaction is created because baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When you mix them the chemical reaction makes CO2. This gas is lighter than air, so it causes the mixture to rise. And then the liquid of the vinegar mixture traps the gas bubbles.. which causes the mixture to bubble and foam over the sides of the contain. And there you have your witches brew!

witches brew science experiment

If you want to add an educational component to this fun activity, you can ask your kids to come up with a theory about what they think will happen before you add the vinegar to the baking soda. Also, the kids can mix up how much baking soda you add to the cauldrons.. or even how much vinegar you pour into the baking soda.

Hiding the ingredients under the bubbles add another level of spooky Halloween fun to this sensory activity. Prepare yourself for the squeals of delight when you show it to your kids!

Exploring the Witches Bubbling Brew

I set the bowl down in the centre of the table on top of a towel. I then asked each of my children in turn to find one of the ingredients by searching through the bubbles with their hands. This resulted in lots of squealing and giggling as they searched and stumbed against the different materials and textures.

Bubbling Brew for Pretend Play

October 20, 2023 By Kate 2 Comments This post may contain affiliate links. I may receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post at no cost to you.

Bubbling brew is a playful, fizzing science activity preschoolers will love. They can pretend to be witches or wizards whilst they stir up a magic, fizzing brew filled with plastic bugs!

We originally did this one afternoon with my youngest when she was a preschooler (how time flies!). It kept her busy for AGES and it was something she kept requesting to do again and again for years afterwards – who doesn’t love fizzy science?

It’s very messy, but oh-so-fun.

This creative play idea was first published in 2014 and has been updated and reshared for today’s audience.

You might also like our Halloween pom pom poppers

Bubbling brew is super easy to set up at home, likely with ingredients and props you already have on hand.

You will need plenty of vinegar and baking soda, because the kids will love it so much they will use it all up quick.

This activity is a bit of science and a bit of pretend play rolled in to one. You can talk to the kids about how the acid in the vinegar reacts with the alkaline in the baking soda to cause a bubbling, fizzing reaction. Just like magic!

Miss K was always a fan of pretend kitchen play, so this was something I knew she would really love.

ingredients needed to make bubbling brew

Lets make some…

How to make bubbling brew for pretend play

You will need:.

• 2L bottle of white cleaning vinegar (or the cheapest vinegar you can buy) • Baking Soda (we used about half of a 500g box) • Food colouring or liquid water colours (food colouring stains hands and clothes so liquid watercolours are a better choice) • Plastic creepy crawlies and snakes • Props from the kitchen: A large pot, a wooden spoon, a table spoon, bowls and a measuring jug • Water

To make the bubbling brew first pour 4 cups of water into the large pot, and stir in 3 heaped tablespoons of baking soda. Then add a few drops of food colouring and the plastic creepy crawlies.

adding baking soda to bubbling brew pot

Give it all a stir and then add vinegar. Miss K poured the vinegar into the measuring cup herself and then poured it all into the brew.

now add vinegar to the pot

We had some awesome fizzing reactions!

fizzing reaction from baking soda and vinegar

You can keep adding tablespoons of baking soda and cups of vinegar as much as you like. Miss K used up all of the 2L bottle of vinegar and also finished off the box of baking soda which was about half full to begin with. I’m sure she would have kept going much longer if she could have!

adding more baking soda

Once the supplies were all gone she made a great game of serving the “poison stew”, as she called it, into plastic bowls for pretend dinners. This kept her busy for a good half hour after our activity was over – she really didn’t want me to pack it away.

bubbling brew experiment

Double, double toil and trouble… it’s time to make a cauldron bubble! Explore chemistry with your little witch or wizard as you create your own spooky science experiment.

  • Cauldron (or bowl)
  • Baking Tray
  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Food Coloring (of your choice)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Plastic Eyeballs (or any other creepy “ingredients”)

Place your cauldron on your baking tray, making sure the tray has a little bit of a lip to catch any wayward witch’s brew. Fill your cauldron about a third of the way with your white vinegar. Add a few drops of your food coloring then mix in a healthy squirt of dish soap. Now, it’s time to get creative! Add glitter and other creepy “ingredients” to your brew to make it extra spooky. When you feel like it’s just the way you want it, pour in a heaping tablespoon of your baking soda and watch your cauldron bubble before your eyes!

The Science

This experiment explores two very important chemical reactions – an acid-base reaction and a decomposition reaction. The acid-base reaction happens when your white vinegar (acid) is combined with your baking soda (base). When baking soda (sodium bicarbonite) and the acetic acid in your vinegar are first combined, they create carbonic acid and sodium acetate. This is when the second reaction happens! The carbonic acid creates a decomposition reaction as it begins to break down into water and carbon dioxide gas – creating your boiling, bubbling brew! Learn more»

Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM

Bubbling Fizzy Acid-Base reaction STEM Kids Activity Color Mixing Free PDF

Bubbling fizzy color-mixing cauldron acid-base science experiment to promote STEM education in toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners. Video Tutorial is Included.

Whether we are looking for a Leprechaun’s pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or brewing a colorful potion, make this Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM experiment with a few simple household ingredients! Besides, by skipping dish soap, this science experiment is safe for babies and toddlers who are still mouthing objects! Most importantly, this kid-safe taste-safe color-mixing activity is perfect for all ages and will expose little scientists to the most satisfying-to-watch acid-base reaction.

Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM TASTE-SAFE Kids Activity

Here is a list of supplies you’ll need for Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM:

  • a waterproof tray to catch the spillover
  • a sensory filler (we are using recyclable shredded grass )
  • baking soda and a scoop (love this olive-wood scooper )
  • food coloring
  • cauldrons , bowls, or cups

*Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM TASTE-SAFE Kids Experiment

Instructions

Below are the instructions on how to conduct this taste-safe Color-Mixing Science Experiment:

First, set up your waterproof tray to catch the spillover. (Grass filler is optional.)

Secondly, arrange cauldrons and add a heaping amount of baking soda to each.

Next, add the desired food coloring to each cauldron’s baking soda. Next, MIX baking soda and food coloring. (You want the food coloring to ‘coat’ and mix with baking soda so that the eruption is colorful.

If you do not mix it, the vinegar might activate with baking soda that has not been ‘colored’, and you will have a colorless eruption.)

Lastly, pour vinegar over the baking soda cauldron, and watch the bubbling fizz erupt!

Video Tutorial

Instead of vinegar, you can use lemon/ lime juice/concentrate or freshly squeezed citrus.

TASTE-SAFE STEM

This bubbling fizzy cauldron STEM experiment is TASTE-SAFE for little ones who are still mouthing things since they are using basking soda and food coloring! However, taste-safe does NOT mean edible!

Please note you can add a squirt of dish soap. However, your experiment will NO LONGER be TASTE-SAFE!

We still want to deter little ones from eating anything that is not food! Good habits will ensure SAFE play! So, if they put it into their mouth, calmly say, “No, not for eating. Not in your mouth.” or “Do not put it in your mouth. This is not food.” Or stick a tongue out and make a yucky /disgusted face. Most importantly, model appropriate ways to play. If the behavior persists, remove it and introduce it later.

RED Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM

The best part of this experiment is that you can conduct it multiple times! Since when you pour vinegar over the baking soda, the vinegar will only activate the top layer of it, leaving the bottom layer intact.

So, try after your first eruption, add more vinegar, and watch it fizz again! If you pour the vinegar and nothing happens, add more baking sade!

BUBBLING FIZZ STEM COLOR MIXING

What’s the science behind Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM?

It’s chemistry! It’s an acid-base reaction! This taste-safe Color-Mixing Science Experiment is simple. It’s fun! And it never ceases to amaze little people!

When baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) are mixed together, they react with each other because of an atom exchange. (Baking soda receives a proton from vinegar). And one of the products this reaction creates is carbonic acid  which is very unstable. Thus , carbonic acid   instantly breaks apart into  water  and  carbon dioxide molecule. And since the carbon dioxide molecule is now free of its other chemical bonds, it can escape , bubbling forth as a gas. As a result, this chemical reaction releases  gas  that bubbles and fizzes, making it a fun sensory acid-base kids’ experiment. The food coloring helps you see the bubbles a little better.

So, in a nutshell, it is the CO2 gas that is responsible for all the fizzing as the gas escapes the solution!

A few discussion questions you can ask your kids to think about with Bubbling Fizzy Cauldron STEM:

  • What would happen if you added coloring to vinegar instead of baking soda? (Hint: Same result, but you can skip mixing baking soda with coloring.)
  • What if we changed how we added the ingredients together? For example, if we poured the baking soda into the vinegar instead of the other way around? (Hint: Same result, since it the MIXING of ingredients that matters and not the order).
  • Can this potion be used for anything? (Hint: Baking soda and vinegar make a great household cleaner!)

Bubbling Halloween Slime – Hocus Pocus Slime Making Fun for Kids!

The evil witches of Hocus Pocus would easily love this bubbling Halloween slime recipe ! If you are looking for a spooky good time with a family friendly movie theme, our bubbling, fizzing, erupting cauldron of oozing slime is perfect! This incredible homemade slime recipe is easy to make and a hit with the kiddos any time of the year, but who doesn’t want to mix up spell binding potions once in a while.

BUBBLING HALLOWEEN SLIME RECIPE

bubbling slime recipe hocus pocus theme slime making activity

You will be taking Halloween slime making to a whole new level of slimy awesome-ness!

You are definitely going to want a cookie tray to catch this bubbling and fizzing “potion” . Hands down, this is the best slime making fun we have had together. Why is that?

Because we love anything that fizzes, bubbles, and erupts . This bubbling slime has the definite oooh and aaah factor , but is also super easy to set up. A little messy, this bubbling Halloween slime is going to be a big HIT this season.

Turn on the movie Hocus Pocus and get set to for your own witch’s or wizard’s brewing station. You choose the colors and creepy crawlies.

Plus you get a fun, stretchy slime out of the science experiment! We used our classic saline solution slime recipe with a bit of a twist…

BUBBLING HALLOWEEN SLIME

Honestly, what’s not to LOVE about this bubbling cauldron of slime, and I can’t wait to share with you how to set it up…

The recipe instructions and mixing are different then all our other slimes, so I recommend you read through the directions, tips, and tricks before you get started. As always the right slime ingredients paired with the BEST slime recipes is key!

Note: The slime that is produced is fun and stretchy but definitely is not as high quality as our original slime recipe. Of course, making the bubbling, fizzing slime is half the fun. If you want a super awesome stretchy slime without a volcano, check out the original saline slime recipe here .

HALLOWEEN SLIME SCIENCE

We always like to include a bit of homemade slime science around here! Slime is an excellent chemistry demonstration and kids love it too! Mixtures, substances, polymers, cross-linking, states of matter, elasticity, and viscosity are just a few of the science concepts that can be explored with homemade slime!

What’s slime science all about? The borate ions in the slime activators  (sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) mix with the PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross-linking!

The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state. Until…

You add the borate ions to the mixture,  and it then starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and thicker and rubbery like slime! Slime is a polymer.

Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms, the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

Is slime a liquid or solid?

We call it a Non-Newtonian fluid because it’s a little bit of both! Experiment with making the slime more or less viscous with varying amounts of foam beads. Can you change the density?

Did you know that slime aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)?

It does and you can use slime making to explore states of matter and its interactions. Find out more below…

  • NGSS Kindergarten
  • NGSS First Grade
  • NGSS Second Grade

Of course, there is an additional science experiment going on here which is the chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar. When the acid and base mix together, they produce a gas called carbon dioxide. This is seen in the fizzing bubbling eruption that takes place when you stir the slime! Continue to explore states of matter too!

BUBBLING HALLOWEEN SLIME INGREDIENTS

Read more about our RECOMMENDED SLIME INGREDIENTS here.

  • 1/2 cup Elmer’s Washable White School Glue
  • 1 tbs Saline Solution
  • 2 tbs Baking Soda
  • 1/4 cup White Vinegar
  • Food Coloring (green or any Halloween colors you want!)
  • Small Cauldron or Container (for mixing slime)
  • Small Cup (for mixing vinegar and saline)
  • Cookie or Craft Tray
  • Creepy Crawlies

SLIME TIP #1:

When looking for a good container for your fizzing slime volcano, find something that is on the taller side but with a wide enough opening to allow you to easily mix the slime as well. The nature of a baking soda and vinegar volcano is that the gas produced during the reaction pushes up and out. A taller and narrower container will yield a better eruption compared to a wider and shorter container.

We chose a small black 5″ cauldron for the theme of the slime!

BUBBLING HALLOWEEN SLIME INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: Start by combining the glue and baking soda in your chosen container. You will notice that as you stir the baking soda into the glue it thickens! This is really the point of adding baking soda to saline solution slime recipes.

Go ahead and get witch-y! Throw in all sorts of creepy crawlies!

SLIME TIP #2: Experiment with different amounts of baking soda!

bubbling brew experiment

STEP 2: For our bubbling Halloween slime we used green food coloring. Orange and purple would be fun too!

bubbling brew experiment

Step 3: In another small container, mix the vinegar and the saline solution.

SLIME TIP #3: You can also play around with the amount of vinegar you use for another way to set up a slime experiment!

Step 4: Pour vinegar/saline mixture into the glue mixture and start stirring!

You will notice the mixture begin to bubble and eventually erupt everywhere! This is the reason for the tray!

bubbling brew experiment

Step 5: Continue to stir until the eruption is complete. You will notice that it gets harder and harder to stir because you are mixing your slime as well!

bubbling brew experiment

Once you have stirred as much as possible, reach in and pull out your slime! It will be a bit messy at first but this slime is wonderful! All you need to do is knead it a bit.

SLIME TIP #4: add a few drops of saline to your hands before you reach in for the slime!

It should not be sticky on the hands either! But if after kneading your slime it still feels sticky, you can add a drop or two of saline to it and continue to knead. Don’t add too much or you will end up with a rubbery slime!

bubbling brew experiment

Go ahead and play with your bubbling slime!

Want more Halloween Science Experiments, click here

What can you do with the leftover slimy eruption on the cookie sheet? You can actually play with it too! We added a squirt of saline to it and had some fun messy slime play. It makes a great popping sound when you squeeze it due to all the bubbles from the reaction that are left over!
