Technology and Communication:

• Old Technology : In past era, people communicate with each other via telephone and letters. Even before it, they use to interact face to face only.
• New/Modern Technology : In modern era, people communicate with each other using Internet (Digital Era).

Role of technology: Technology has changed the way we communicate with each other, even the way we represent ourselves in the society. With time people are becoming more extrovert with the help of technology as they can easily express their views on social media like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and many more.

Communication

News plays an important part in most people’s lives. why is news so important to people why is so much news dedicated to bad news should the news focus on the food news instead.

The news is a vital way of communicating information in everyone’s lives. This essay believes that being updated to current events makes news essential to our existence. Firstly, this essay will discuss the importance of news to the general public, secondly, why there is a large portion of news devoted to horrific events and lastly, why we should focus more on reporting positive stories.

Lastly, in my opinion, I believe that broadcasters should concentrate more on showing news that inspires other people. Hearing about positive news motivates viewers to have a better view of the world and in society. When disasters strike, often widespread news of people donating food and blankets, can promote the cause and motivate others to get involved. For instance, in my own personal experience in 2016 during the wrath of Haiyan in the Philippines, I was inspired by a news story asking for help, so I sent food and money as a small contribution.

(Word count – 375 / Band score 8)

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay on the topic of online communications and meetings from the real IELTS exam.

In many workplaces, online communication is now more common than face-to-face meetings.

Offices around the world these days are opting to hold meetings online to save both time and money. In my opinion, despite the potential loss of a strong rapport between co-workers, this is a positive considered as a whole.

Critics of these changes often point to its effect on interpersonal relationships in an office. The meeting itself is largely secondary as most information can be communicated just as easily through an online teleconference or an email. True value lies, instead, in the moments before, during and after meetings when colleagues have a chance to socialise or exchange ideas about what they have been working on. This is the reason some companies, famously Apple and Pixar, designed their offices to maximise opportunities for employees to chat with individuals from different departments. The strengthening of social bonds and the sharing of novel perspectives can both boost morale and help drive innovation.

Nonetheless, meeting online is more convenient for employees and saves money for companies. When employees must come in for their work already, many of the benefits listed above are already present and meetings mainly serve as a distraction. Remote workers will also appreciate not having to commute for a short meeting, especially if they have family or other working commitments. Moreover, companies benefit from the time that employees save because it allows them to better allocate their labour towards actual work, thereby increasing efficiency. There are also a range of costs that can be reduced once online communications become standard such as leasing less office space and savings related to office expenses and employee perks.

The growth of technology has led to a fundamental shift in the way companies hold meetings or conferences through face-to-face to online communication like email, instant messaging, and social media. While this trend has led to a dramatic increase in time and interpersonal communication, it can also cause misinterpretations and security theft.

Today, the number of people working remotely at least part-time has risen because many companies have multiple offices. Technologies like Skype, Slack, and other popular platforms help keep the team connected. Online communication can contribute to workers talk things out across the globe through a video call. This trend is not only incredible but decreases the chances of miscommunication that could become costly in terms of money and time.

However, communication online means you will often share the confidential information of the company. Hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in gleaning all those secret stuff. To prevent this to happen, employees must be aware of what to share or not in order to preserve the security of the organizations. Moreover, in personal communication, several elements come into play to promote effective communication, including non-verbal signals and tone in the voice. For example, if the boss says something gruff tone, you will generally understand he/she is angry. But in online communication, you will not have that luxury which is the cons of this trend.

In conclusion, the online holding of meetings or conferences can be substantially useful for those who tend to work at home or are far away from their office location. This could be effective as long as it is used in a controllable and understandable way.

Communication Technology Essay

This Communication Technology Essay is about how relationships have been impacted. This is the question:

Nowadays, the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. 

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? 

Is this a positive or negative development?

Understanding the Task

You should be able to see that there are two parts that need to be answered:

The first part is about general effects and the second part is asking for your opinion about this. 

So it doesn't easily fit into an essay 'type'.

Don't worry about this. If you have learned to recognize different types of essay but you find one that does not seem to fit any, just focus on working out exactly what you are being asked. 

So in this one you have to brainstorm some ideas about the way relationships have changed. 

Stating your Opinion

For the second part you need to decide if it is positive or negative, or both. 

Choosing one side and writing about it is probably the simplest way to approach it. In other words:

• Body 1: The way relationships have changed
• Body 2: The negative impacts (or positive)

Although it says ' positive or negative ', it's YOUR opinion, so if you decide it is both it is fine to say this as long as you  make it clear . 

In this model Communication Technology Essay, the writer has stated that it is both positive and negative.

• Body 1: The way relationships have changed (positive)
• Body 2: The negative impacts

When you take a look at the model answer, you'll see the writer has discussed the new types of relationships and labelled them as positive, but then gone on to look at the negative sides.

There are usually several ways you can approach and organize an essay, not just one. As long as it is coherent and answers the question, that is fine. 

Now take a look at the model answer and the comments below. 

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. 

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

It is evident that technology has transformed the ways of communication and influenced relationships in a variety of ways. In my opinion, there are both positive and negative effects of this.

The principal way in which relationships have been affected is that they tend to be at a distance rather than face-to-face. The advent of the internet has made it easy for business owners to communicate across the world, with remote job opportunities one call away. Online educational programs are available for people residing in different countries, and it is no longer a dream to attend live classes from the comfortable environment of a home. Not only this, the social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have revolutionized relationships, be it making online friendships with people from other countries or staying in touch with loved ones. Based on this perspective, technology has influenced relationships in a positive way. 

However, despite these advances, the quality of interaction has significantly declined in several respects. If people are developing most of their relationships online, this means that they may also have less fact-to-face contact. This kind of contact on a personal level is important for human beings to feel wanted and a part of society. This may be a particular problem for children's social development as they used to be seen playing out on the streets but are now too often indoors. Technology can also mean people are detached from what is going on around them even when they are out, as can be seen by the many people staring into their mobile phones as they travel or walk around. 

In conclusion, technology has brought some positive development in the ways people interact with each other. However, there are also some negative impacts of technology on the types of relationships people make.

This Communication Technology Essay would get a good score for the following reasons.

It fully answers the question, setting out the way the types of relationships people make have changed (they tend to be ' online ') and then expanding on this by giving examples. 

A balanced opinion is also clearly explained, with the impacts in the first body paragraph seen to be positive, and the second body paragraph dedicated to explaining the negative points.

The essay is also clearly organised and coherent, with the opinion clearly stated and the body paragraphs clearly each focused on one central idea.

There is also good vocabulary used and good collocations. For example:

• advent of the internet
• remote job opportunities
• social platforms
• revolutionized relationships
• people are detached from 

The grammar shows accuracy and a wide range of structures are used.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 - Style questions

Examiner:  Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Minna: Yes, I do, but I admit that it does depend on the context. For example, if I am with a group of life long friends as well, I feel more confident and relaxed than if I am alone, when I feel more timid and awkward.

I think that at work I try to put up a façade of being professional and in control although underneath the surface I am paddling like a swan.

Examiner: Would you describe yourself as a sociable person?

Mario: I’d like to say so, as I am always happy to get involved in organising parties and gatherings – indeed I can be a bit of a control freak , as I have an eye for detail. However, I would be more than delighted to be described as reliable and dependable as we all need friends we can rely on .

I have known my best friends since school, and we trust each other completely and pick up where we left off each time we see each other.

Examiner: Are you usually punctual or late?

Judy:   That’s a great question! Every year I make a resolution to be on time for both work and social meetings, but I have a terrible habit of always being slightly late.

I know that punctuality is a virtue and I am always embarrassed by being a bad time keeper , especially when I understand that being late is rude and disrespectful . I will keep working on improving this negative trait .

IELTS Speaking Part 2 - Style question

Describe a person you would like to be similar to. you should say.

• Who this person is?
• What this person does?
• What qualities this person has and explain why you would like to be similar to this person?

Edin: I’d like to talk about a teacher who is Head of Pastoral care at a school I used to go to. Pastoral duties revolve around the mental and social health of students more than the academic side but of course, the two work in tandem.

This lady, Mrs Butler, has held this job for more than a decade, and she is inspiring with her attention to detail and caring personality.

It is her job to interact with students, in a relaxed, almost parental way and create the kind of atmosphere where they can trust her, and share any problems and issues they may have.

As part of her duties, she would liaise between the students and other members of staff, education, and healthcare professional bodies, and parents as needed.

The interpersonal and communication skills required for this role are very demanding  and take a long time to learn if not acquired naturally.

Mrs. Butler is enormously empathetic, she really understands emotion and is a great and generous listener and I believe these are all key qualities that are important to emulate .

I think that interacting with students and colleagues at work can present many challenges and an understanding of human characteristics, even the psychology, of how people think and respond to each other is more and more important.

I would love to be considered as caring, considerate, and reliable as she is and she is really one of those rare people who can connect with anyone, anywhere.

Describe a famous person you are interested in. You should say:

• who this person is and how do you know about him/her
• what sort of life did the person have before becoming famous
• how did this person become famous
• explain why you like this person

IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Style question

Examiner:  How do you think the personalities of men and women vary?

Sergi : It is often said that men can be more opinionated and less empathetic than women and it is true that this is often a male stereotype .

However, compared to previous generations, many men today are more in touch with their feelings, less moody and are much more aware of the challenges faced by regarding juggling a family and parenthood.

Examiner: How do companies try to assess the personalities of people who are applying for jobs?

Alice: Rather than a traditional interview nowadays, many companies demand high grades in psychometric tests which have been designed to test character in order to select candidates who are compatible with the company mentality.

Whilst these tests may highlight insecure or weaker candidates, I am not convinced that it is the most effective way to judge personality.

Examiner: Why do you think they do this?

Aloic: In my opinion, these tests are used to save time as most jobs today attract numerous applicants and it must be hard to choose the strongest and most suitable.

That said, to be defined by an algorithm or computer program is terrifying and critics suggest that it cannot effectively determine those with good communication skills or natural leaders .

• turn (your) life around: change (your) life completely
• work around the clock: work very long hours 
• take (your) job home with you: worry about work outside working hours
• be into (something): be very interested in (something)

• bump into (someone):   meet (someone you know) by chance
• it struck me: it gave me that impression
• more to (it) than meets the eye:  (it’s) more complicated or interesting than (it) appears
• to be hooked: to be totally involved

• do (someone) a world of good: have a very positive influence on (your) life
• tied up in: very busy and unable to get away
• on the up and up: getting better all the time
• A change for the better: a positive difference
