Brightspace D2L is a Learning Management System (LMS) platform that allows students to access their HACC courses online. Each professor’s approach to remotely managing their courses will be different, but they will all be using the same platform and tools. The following is a list of resources to help you navigate your courses on D2L.

  • An Overview of Navigating

Using the Content Tool

Participating with discussion boards, taking and reviewing quizzes, submitting assignments / dropbox, accessing grades, monitoring your class progress, an overview of navigating brightspace.

Brightspace D2L has a number of tools that you will use to access course materials, communicate with others, take quizzes, upload assignments, and check your grades. These videos will give you a look at some of the basic functions within D2L.

The Content tool in D2L is a place where you will access the course materials your instructor has selected for the class. This area will include content such as articles, text, videos, images, PowerPoints, and more. Check out the video below to see how to view the content areas within your D2L course.

In many of your courses, you will be engaging with other students through discussion boards within D2L. Your instructor will usually pose a question, explain a concept, or have you discuss new ideas with the other students in the class. The video below gives an overview of how to use discussion boards to make a post in D2L.

Just like in face-to-face classes, you’ll need to take quizzes in your remote courses to show your understanding of the material you’ve learned. D2L has a quiz tool built right in, so you’ll be able to take the quiz and see your results immediately when you’re finished. Check out this video to see how to access and take quizzes within D2L.

Most remote courses will require you to submit larger assignments such as essays or projects. This can be done within D2L using the Assignments/Dropbox tool. Watch the video below for instructions on how to use the tool to submit your assignments to your instructor.

The grades you earn in your courses are updated regularly and you can access them any time through D2L’s grades tool. Checking your grades often is a great way to monitor your progress in the course, and will help you stay on the right track to successfully passing the class. Oftentimes, your instructor will include comments and feedback for each assignment, which can also be useful in understanding both your strengths and areas of need.

It’s important to stay on top of all of your coursework and assignments in a timely fashion. For that reason, D2L has a tool that allows you to monitor your progress through each class you take to help you keep track of everything you’ve completed, due dates, and information on upcoming assignments. Watch the video below to get an overview of the class progress tool in D2L.

Instructional support, setting due dates and late submission dates for an assignment.

Setting up the due dates for the assignment shows your students the time frame in which they are required to complete their work and marks any late assignments.

  • What is required: A D2L Brightspace course and an Assignment folder
  • Go to the Assignment link from the course Navbar.
  • Locate the Assignment that you plan to set the due and submission dates in.
  • Click on the action menu next to the Assignment name and choose Edit  from the action menu.
  • From the Edit Assignment page you will have access to all 3 Assignment Dates: the Due Date, the Start Date, and the End Date (more information below). Note: You don’t have to use all 3 dates, they are optional.
  • Click the  Save  button to save the changes. Clicking on the  Save and Close  button will save your changes and will bring you back to the list of Folders in your Dropbox area.

The Due Date

On the Edit Assignment page, located under the Assignment Title, to the right of “Grade Out Of” options, the Due Date can be set via Calendar drop-down menu. This Assignment will still be available for your students after the Due Date, but submissions uploaded past that date will be marked as Late when seen under the Submission view.

Start and End Dates

On the Edit Assignment page, at the top of the right column, select Availability Dates & Conditions to reveal the Start and End Date settings. Dates can be set via Calendar drop-down menus. Once a date is selected, options to set the behavior of the Assignment outside of the Start or End dates becomes visible.

  • “Visible with access restricted” prevents students from viewing the Assignment page or its description outside of the date window. The Assignment will still appear under Content and Assignments, but will not be ‘clickable.’
  • “Visible with submission restricted” prevents students from submitting, but allows them to view the Assignment page and instructions.
  • “Hidden” will effectively toggle the visibility button, so in addition to preventing submission and viewing, students will not see the Assignment under Content or Assignments. This option is not recommended.
  • Add Availability Dates To Calendar – Checking this box will create Calendar events and notifications for the Start and End dates.

  • Add restrictions to an Assignment (availability dates, release condition [start at 1:35], and special access [start at 2:05])

This quickstart guide will walk you through some of the key starting processes for your D2L course. If you would like a more detailed overview of D2L and its tools, our D2L Essentials training provides more in-depth explanations for D2L processes and best practices.

Navigating to D2L

Log into D2L using your DePaul Blue Key credentials: https://d2l.depaul.edu/ . If you are not able to access D2L, it is most likely because you have not been assigned a course in Campus Connect . Check Campus Connect to see if you have been assigned to a course. If you have not, you will need to reach out to your department scheduler about your course assignment(s). If you have been assigned a course and still can’t login, email [email protected] .

Finding your course

Your D2L homepage will list all courses you’ve been assigned. These courses can be organized by term.

Adding content

When you click on your course, you will see the navigation bar, or NavBar, near the top of the screen. Click on Content. This is where you will post all the materials your students will read, watch, or listen to and all the activities you have planned.

screenshot of the depaul d2l navbar showcasing the content button

You first need to create a module to which you will add content.

  • Select the "Add a module…" box.
  • Enter a name for the module in the input-text box (i.e. module 1, week 1, course information, etc.)
  • Hit return (or enter) on the keyboard.

screenshot of the d2l content area showcasing the add a module button

DePaul requires at least a syllabus to be uploaded to your D2L course site. Use the blue upload/create bottom to add content such as your syllabus.

screenshot of the d2l content area showcasing the upload file button

Creating news items

The News tool in D2L allows instructors to communicate updates, changes, and new information to students. News items appear in the News widget on the Course Homepage, the first page that students see when they enter the course. A quick welcome message is recommended.

  • From the Course Homepage, go to the News widget.
  • Select Create Announcement .
  • Enter a title in the "Headline" field.
  • Enter the text of the news item in the "Content" field.
  • Set a ‘start date’ if you want to delay when the announcement/news item will be published.

Using the Classlist

Your classlist shows all students currently enrolled in your course. In your course NavBar, click ‘Classlist.’ You can email the entire classlist at once from this tool. Any emails sent from the classlist will appear as being sent from your DePaul email. Any replies from students will be sent directly to your DePaul email account.

DePaul requires all instructor-student communication to happen through DePaul Outlook accounts.

Activating your course

By default, your course is inactive, and therefore not visible to your students until you activate it. We recommend activating your course on the first day of term at the latest.
