How to Write Your HTML Resume

An effective way to write an impeccable resume is by following the three stages of resume writing that have been discussed below:

  • Stage 1: Master HTML Resume
  • Stage 2: First Draft of HTML Resume
  • Stage 3: Final Draft of HTML Resume

HTML-Resume-Infographic

Master HTML Resume

Starting by drafting a master resume can help you throughout your resume writing and make it easier for you to curate a job-winning resume.

A master folder of your HTML fresher resume can be created to gather your details and information that is most likely to be required in every resume.

Simply list down every detail of your work experience, education, training, certifications, awards, recognitions, etc.

Some details may not seem important in your current resume but do not hesitate to store them in your folder because they may be required in the future update of your resumes.

First Draft of HTML Resume

Next, create the first draft of your html5 resume wherein you need to compose the following sections as per your requirement:

  • Personal Information
  • Profile Title
  • Professional Experience
  • Certifications (if any)
  • Awards & Recognition (if any)
  • Additional Information (if any)

Final Draft of HTML Resume

In the final stage, you need to compose two important sections that can help you highlight both your professional skill and work experience:

Key Skills : Create a separate section to highlight your skills which you need to pick from the professional experience section. Simply scan through your work experience statements, then pick the most significant skills and list them under the "Key Skills" section.

Summary/Objective : If you have more than 3 years of work experience, compose a suitable resume summary. But if you have less nor no work experience, compose a resume objective. You must compose this section as it gives an overview of your resume.

HTML Resume Sections

Every section in a resume plays an important role in highlighting different details and information about you to the recruiters.

Your html resume layout should consist of various sections.

The below-given sections are the standard resume sections that are ideally required to be framed in a resume:

  • Summary/Objective

To enhance the standard sections of a simple HTML resume, the below-given optional sections can be framed:

  • Awards & Recognitions (if any)

HTML-Resume-Sections

Also, do read more about resume sections on Hiration's Guide to sections in a resume .

Additionally, you can use Hiration’s Online Resume Builder to curate the perfect resume that can raise your chances of being shortlisted for your dream job.

HTML Resume: Header

Your resume header is the section that helps you label your resume with your name and give it a unique identity to stand out amongst any other resume.

It makes it easier for the recruiters to keep a track of your resume in a sea of resumes. Hence you should write your HTML development resume in the range of 16-20 font size at the topmost part of your section.

If you have a middle name write only the initial of your middle name followed by a period and place it between your first and last name.

Read Hiration’s Guide To Writing The Perfect Resume Header to learn how to curate the perfect header for your HTML developer resume.

We have given an HTML resume example for you to understand how an ideal resume header is framed:

Make the best use of Hiration's Online Resume Builder to frame the perfect resume that can help you land your dream job.

Describe Your Professional Experience in Your HTML Resume

Most people make the mistake of taking their resumes for granted and hence end up losing the chance of landing their dream jobs despite having all the required skills and credentials.

Here is your chance to avoid making such avoidable mistakes and get closer to your dream job.

The following factors can help you curate a flawless resume if followed and applied while framing your HTML fresher resume.

  • STAR Format
  • Frame Points
  • Grouping & Highlighting

HTML-Resume-Work-Experience-Tips

STAR FORMAT

Always write action-oriented points that help you describe your work experience and highlight your roles and responsibilities while also mentioning your achievements and contributions.

The STAR format can help you describe your professional experience in the most effective manner.

STAR stands for the following points:

  • S: The situation , backdrop, or context of work assigned to you.
  • T: The actual task assigned to you.
  • A: action or strategy you used to execute the assigned task.
  • R: The result or outcome of your action in the form of achievement figures.

FRAMING POINTS

To understand the importance of framing your HTML resume points, let us compare the two HTML resume examples that have been given below:

AVOID THIS:

Resume Example 1: "As a professional HTML developer, I have written 100% efficient, well designed, and testable codes by making use of Photoshop and Dreamweaver. While working on the given project, I cooperated with 10 web designers to match the visual design intent for 20+ websites. As part of my roles and responsibilities, I successfully updated 20+ client websites while designing, building, and maintaining software applications. I also identified any existing problems and corrected them to ensure 100% customer satisfaction at all times."

PRACTICE THIS:

Resume Example 2:

  • Wrote 100% efficient, well designed, and testable codes via Photoshop and Dreamweaver
  • Cooperated with 10 web designers to match visual design intent for 20+ websites
  • Updated 20+ client websites while designing, building, and maintaining software applications
  • Identified problems and corrected them to ensure 100% customer satisfaction

Framing Points: Analysis

By comparing the two HTML resume examples, we can observe that framed points (example 1) are clear to read and understand as compared to the paragraph (example 1).

There is a huge difference between the framed points and the lengthy paragraph despite both the examples describing the same HTML resume points.

And for a recruiter, it would be easier to go through the framed points as compared to the paragraph where all the information is clustered together in a bulk.

In conclusion, always make sure that you frame your points in one-liners and avoid writing bulky paragraphs to describe your professional experience.

GROUPING & HIGHLIGHTING

Another important factor that can help you enhance your work experience section is by applying grouping and highlighting.

To understand its importance and how it can be implemented in your simple HTML resume, let us look at another set of HTML resume examples given below:

LESS IMPACT:

Resume Example 1:

  • Created the UI for 60+ websites through standard HTML and CSS practices
  • Maintained and updated 10+ HTML/CSS templates on a weekly basis
  • Collaborated with the back-end Web Developer team and created 27+ new websites
  • Drafted efficient codes via Dreamweaver & BootStrap to delivered high-quality codes
  • Integrated accurate data from 90+ back-end services and databases

HIGH IMPACT:

UI Designing & Web Development

Data Integration

Grouping & Highlighting: Analysis

Now both the examples are clear to read but applying grouping and highlighting (example 2) effectively enhances your framed HTML resume points (example 1).

It is so because listing down all the similar points under the relevant group makes it look more organized and highlighting the main point in your statements.

The recruiters can easily make out your achievements and contributions as a professional and hence raise the chances of shortlisting you for the targeted job profile as the most suitable applicant.

Make sure that you make the best of grouping and highlighting to frame effective one-liner points that help you describe your professional experience.

Refer to the given resume HTML resume template showcasing what an ideal professional experience section looks like:

HTML-Resume-Professional-Experience

Create Separate Key Skills & Technical Skills Section in Your HTML Resume

The recruiters look for applicants who have the right set of html skills on resume to shoulder the responsibilities that come with the targeted job.

  • You need to highlight the most significant skills that you possess as a professional in your HTML resume.
  • Create a separate section under the heading "Key Skills" and align all the core skills that you have justified in your one-liners.
  • But make sure that you mention only those significant skills that are relevant to the job profile.

Doing so can help you rank high on the ATS because you can highlight your skills by using relevant keywords used by the recruiters in the job listing.

Read Hiration's Guide on what skills to put on a resume to get a better understanding of how to efficiently curate this section.

Here is an HTML resume sample showcasing the perfect html skills on resume. It illustrated what your HTML resume skills should look like when composed in this section:

Include HTML Resume Summary

Compose an html resume summary if you have more than 3 years of work experience to give an overview of your resume.

A resume summary can help you highlight your most significant achievements and contributions to an organization through which the recruiters can easily recognize your potential.

You can compose an effective resume summary by following the given points:

  • Write your summary at the end because that way you can easily decide what to skip and add.
  • Scan through your work experience section and pick the highlights of your career.
  • Avoid over flooding your resume summary with unnecessary details and information.

Go through Hiration's Resume Summary Guide to learn how to write an effective summary for HTML resumes.

Look at the given HTML resume sample showcasing an ideal resume summary for your resume HTML templates:

HTML Resume Objective

An HTML fresher resume objective should be written if you do not have enough work experience or if you belong to any of the following categories:

  • You are a fresh graduate.
  • You are making a change of career.
  • You have less or no work experience.

The role of your HTML fresher resume objective is to convince the recruiters that you are the most suitable applicant for the targeted job profile.

Your HTML resume objective is an overview of your resume that needs to be composed if you are not eligible to curate an HTML resume summary.

Learn the art of curating effective HTML fresher resume objective with the help of Hiration's Guide on Resume Objectives .

HTML Resume: Personal Information

The personal information section is an important feature of your html5 resume because this is where you can list down your details of contact without which the recruiters cannot reach you for any likely shortlist.

Here is what an ideal personal information section should contain:

Contact Number

Email Address

Current Location

Additionally, you can also include the following sections when required:

  • LinkedIn profile link
  • Link to an online portfolio
Contact Number: +1 234 234 2345
Email Address:
Location: SF, US
LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/flynn
Hiration Protip : In the Mideast, including details like gender, passport details, date of birth, etc. are required, but not in the US. So make sure to read through the hiring norms for the country you are targeting before you include (or don't include) such details.

It is also possible that some recruiters may want to interview you over the phone or confirm with you before scheduling any face-to-face interviews.

Hence you must provide only the correct details of your contact number which is active and functional.

The correct format for writing your mobile number is documented below:

  • Provide the ISD code of your country as a prefix before your phone number
  • Add a plus sign (+) right before the ISD code
  • Eg: +1 (623) 238 2151

One of the most convenient means for the recruiters to get in touch with you is via email.

Give out your official email IDs that have your real name and not the ones that have fancy or made-up names to maintain a professional approach in your html programmer resume.

The right way to frame your email address is: [email protected] or [email protected]

There are two important points you need to keep in mind while framing your current location in a resume:

  • Avoid giving out unnecessary details like the name of your locality, house or street number, etc.
  • Mention the city and state of your residence if you are looking for a job within your country. But if you are looking for a job outside your country then mention your city and country.

Read Hiration's Guide to composing your contact information to learn more about this section.

HTML Resume: Profile Title

Whether you are an HTML developer or an HTML programmer, you need to let the recruiters identify your professional status through your profile title.

Mention an accurate profile title to make the recruiters recognize the level of your professional expertise.

Your profile title helps conveys the following:

  • Current designation
  • Functional industry
  • The level of seniority in your line of work

Ideally, your profile title should be written in the range of 14-16 font size.

Do not exaggerate your profile title because it may have a negative impact on your job application as it would be considered as lying to the recruiters.

Look at our HTML developer resume sample to get a better insight into how an ideal profile title is framed:

HTML-Resume-Profile-Title

HTML Resume: Education

Provide the details of your educational qualification to make the recruiters recognize you as a suitable applicant for the targeted job profile.

  • Name of the school/university.
  • The courses you have pursued.
  • Location of your school/university.
  • Dates of enrollment and graduation in the month & year format.

Read an exhaustive guide on how to correctly curate the education section from Hiration's Guide on how to list education on your resume .

  • Certification course name.
  • Name of the institute of affiliation.
  • Location of the institute of affiliation.

Resume image 1

You have probably heard people say that listing things like HTML and CSS in the skills' section of your resume is all that needs to be done to secure a job as a developer.

Rest assured - that’s a lie. Simply mentioning such skills without any context looks plain and might even sound shallow to hiring managers.

Just think about it - recruiters go through tens of resumes every day. If you want to make sure your resume stands out from the rest, you need to give them something more than just a skills list.

You’ll learn how to do this by the time you’ve finished reading this article. But first, let’s see why HTML and CSS are so important.

Although they are considered to be two different core programming languages, HTML and CSS are most often used together.

In short, HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) dictates the content and structure of a webpage, while CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is responsible for the design.

Both of them are required to build a website. What is more - they are considered integral to web development.

Usually, recruiters will say if they expect you to have knowledge of and experience working with HTML and CSS in the requirements' section of the job advert.

And if they do, it’s especially important that you actually mention something along the lines in your resume. The use of applicant tracking systems that scan resumes for different keywords has become increasingly popular in recent years.

It’s now time to look at the different ways to feature HTML and CSS in your resume.

Despite the urge to write “HTML” and “CSS” in the skills’ section of your resume and move on to your other skills, you should focus on the ways to actually demonstrate these two. You could list some relevant skills, such as:

  • Web development
  • UI / UX design
  • Photoshop and other photo editing software
  • Cross-platform testing

It’s a good idea to mention some projects you have participated in that required you to have knowledge of HTML & CSS.

You can also list some of the courses you have taken to strengthen your skills in HTML and CSS. This will show recruiters that you are an inquisitive learner who is always ready to improve.

How to demonstrate HTML & CSS on your resume:

  • Mention times when your knowledge of HTML & CSS was required for succeeding in tasks and projects in your experience section
  • List some of the courses you have taken to strengthen your HTML & CSS skills in your courses section
  • Include some numeric information, for how long you have been working with HTML & CSS, or the number of courses you have taken in your resume summary
  • Mention HTML & CSS explicitly in your skills' section to make sure you pass applicant tracking systems
  • Talk about times that helped you strengthen your skills and turn into an even greater professional

Example 1: Show HTML & CSS skills in the experience section

  • • Assisted senior developers in translating basic client requests into an HTML code
  • • Co-led a brief 1-day HTML & CSS workshop for colleagues working in sales and marketing
  • • Assisted senior developers in developing the websites of 3 multinational clients
  • • Partnered with designers to ensure high-quality graphic content

This Junior Developer has included some valuable information in the experience section of their resume. They have shown their ability to translate client requests into HTML and to be cooperative when faced with more difficult demands.

What is more, they have also mentioned their ability to explain HTML & CSS concepts to people with no background in web development.

Example 2: Demonstrate HTML & CSS knowledge in the resume summary section

A sentence or two containing relevant information about your experience is enough to showcase your HTML & CSS skills.

The resume summary of this web developer shows that they have long years of experience in the field. It also mentions the fact that they can work individually but also as part of a team, which is considered important for every web developer.

Example 3: Show your HTML & CSS skills in your achievements sections

If there are some other achievements you’d like to showcase, you can include a “Most Proud of” section at the end of your resume.

Try to get in as much detail as possible and include at least some form of numbers. Be it hours spent on a project or number of happy clients - you decide!

Example 4: Use a separate skills' section

Make sure to list the skills mentioned in the job advert description in a separate skills’ section. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems and will increase your chances of landing an interview!

Should I show or say what level my HTML & CSS skills are?

In our opinion, stating the level of your HTML and CSS skills is unnecessary and only takes extra space. Focus on your achievements instead!

Should I categorize my HTML & CSS skills?

Although it might take you a bit more time, categorizing your hard skills (this includes HTML & CSS) will most probably work in your favor. It will give your resume a more organized look and will also help the recruiter focus on other important information you’ve listed.

  • Focus on achievements: mention all your remarkable achievements related to your HTML & CSS skills.
  • Mention some HTML & CSS classes you’ve taken: this is a great way to show your passion for the topic and your desire to keep improving.
  • List all skills mentioned as part of the job requirements: this will help you pass applicant tracking systems.

How to choose the perfect HTML Resume Template?

You may want to consider a few of the points below in order to choose the perfect and professional looking HTML resume template:

1. Easy To Edit

The template should be easy to edit so that you can tune it to perfection with your own details. If you are familiar with frameworks like Bootstrap or Foundation then look for resume templates built with those frameworks.

2. Multiple Customization Options

Resume templates which offer customization options such as multiple fonts, colors and layouts are better to have in order to make them fit for the need.

3. Print Stylesheets

If the template provides print styles then you would be able to easily print your resume from your website. The additional print stylesheet should be able to hide elements that are not needed in the printed resume PDF or physical copy.

4. Licensing Information

This one is very important and you should always read the licensing information associated with a free resume template.

How to build resume in HTML5 & CSS?

If you would like to craft your own perfect resume in HTML5 and CSS then we present to you the following tutorials which will guide you through the process:

Developing an Interactive Résumé with HTML and CSS

For a while, I toyed with the idea of creating an HTML version of my résumé that looked the same as the paper version of it.

As a Web Developer, I thought it would be cool to send my CV as an HTML file instead of a PDF or a Word document. It would be original and help showcase some of the things I could do.

Note: while developing an HTML CV may be a cool project to complete and add a fun factor to the recruiting process, it may not be so practical. Especially considering that most recruiting sites don't support HTML uploads.

There were some obvious limitations and foreseeable problems, but I could work around them:

  • It should not have JavaScript : many browsers block JavaScript when running on local files. It would be terrible if I sent my résumé and it got blocked by the browser while showing a nasty security message.
  • It should work offline : if the person that was looking at the document didn't have an Internet connection, the document should still display correctly. So no CDNs or online images or files.
  • It should be self-contained : I could not send a bunch of images, CSS, and HTML files, because if one was lost or not downloaded, the CV would look bad. Styling and images (SVG if needed) would have to be inline in a single HTML file.
  • It should work in most browsers : using a fancy feature could fail and backfire. It had to work in most modern browsers... and that included IE11, which still prevails in corporate environments.
  • It should be people- and machine-friendly : not only it should be web-accessible, but it should also be easy to process and understand by a computer... even when most recruiting sites don't accept HTML as a valid format to upload a file.

And with that in mind, I started working on the first version of the document.

First attempt

Mimicking my paper résumé in HTML was relatively easy, then I went one step forward and added some interactivity :

Screenshot of classic-looking interactive resume

It looked OK, but I already had a paper version of that résumé. Even with some interactivity, it looked a bit meh and didn't have all it required. Also, I was not taking advantage of all the possibilities that HTML and CSS provided.

So I decided to go beyond that...

The extended version

Why limit it to looking like the boring paper-version? Or to be (semi-)static HTML? Or even to have a single visualization? Why make it only "human-friendly" if most résumés will be processed by machines?

I developed a new version of the résumé , and this time it had more bells and whistles: an interactive experience that, when printed, looked like my regular paper résumé. Here is a demo:

To develop this version I focused on five key elements:

  • A different spin on design and interactivity.
  • Multiple style modes (for screen and printer).
  • Use of semantic HTML.

The idea is that a curriculum vitae is both parts equal presentation (points 1 and 2) and data (points 3, 4, and 5). If the CV is visually appealing to a human reader, there would be more chances to catch attention. At the same time, CVs are normally processed by computers, so making them appealing for a machine reader is a big part of it too.

Semantic HTML

One of the big changes in HTML5 was the inclusion of many semantic tags. Developers don't need to stick to div or p and can use tags that convey some meaning to the content.

But let's not focus exclusively on the typical <section> or <main> (that you should use too). A curriculum vitae allows for the use of other semantic tags that are not so common such as:

  • <time> : indicates a period in time, and it is perfect to tag previous job dates or graduation dates, etc.; or
  • <address> : it is important to point out that this is not used for a physical address, but the contact information of the people related to the closest <article> or <body> , and it can contain emails, URLs, Twitter handles...

Also, don't forget about <ul> and <ol> . They are not new HTML5 tags, but they are important too. One common mistake is using groups of <div> or <section> for what should be a list of elements. Your previous/current jobs and certifications are lists. Use them.

...I should take my own advice about lists, as I made this mistake while developing my HTML résumé 😬

If not making orthographic or grammar mistakes is important for a "paper résumé", for a web version, it is important to structure the content properly too. Don't forget to:

  • Divide content into sections.
  • Add headings for each section.
  • Have a proper heading order (don't skip headings).
  • Leave comments in the code.
  • Use the proper semantic tags.
  • Make it standard HTML and CSS.
  • Think of browser support (even if it means leaving out some fancy stuff).

Structuring the content correctly will be incredibly helpful when styling it. But remember: you want your CV to look good even in plain HTML (without any CSS). That way, if something goes wrong with the styles, you will still have something viable.

Design & Interactivity

Now that we have our HTML structured and built, it is time to add some magic via CSS. I know this may sound like a cliché but, it is true, the only limit here is your imagination.

Highlight in "your". This section should be you. I can describe how I created mine, but then it wouldn't be personal for you. Ultimately, you are the one that needs to come up with a design and apply it.

As with the HTML, take into account the type of document and your target audience:

  • Remember about color contrast and accessibility.
  • Use a readable font (and don't forget common fallbacks!)
  • Don't use flash colors.
  • Don't use animations that could be distracting.
  • Keep it professional.

...unless that's not what you want to go with. Again, this is your creative moment. Do what feels right (just make sure it is web-accessible.)

For mine, I chose a relatively simple card-style, with diagonal cuts, and in which the information is pushed up or down depending on which section is active (for more of that, continue reading).

Interactivity

We are not using any JavaScript, so adding interactivity is going to be a little challenge... but it's doable.

The trick is using visually hidden form elements –mainly radio buttons or checkboxes– to save the state of the document, keeping track of what section should be visible at each given time. Then you can activate/deactivate the inputs by using labels targeting them.

This is something that I've done before to create CSS games . It may take a little bit of time to get used to it, but it will be good practice for CSS, and it will help you learn a lot about selectors and modifiers.

Here is a simplification of how it could look:

You can see it working here (click on the titles to activate each section):

In my case, I have two sets of radio buttons:

  • One keeps track of which section the user is in (defaults to the first one).
  • The other one keeps track of which position (within the experience section) should be visible.

Just keep in mind that, the more radio groups that you have, the more complex the page will be.

Printing styles

We have a fancy looking interactive résumé, but if the user tries to print it, it doesn't look great. The solution: style the printed version in a different way to the screen version.

CSS allows for specific printing styles that go inside the print media rule:

There we can define anything, different positions, displays, colors... anything CSS allows to do. But with the print media rule, developers can specify much more , like some default settings for the printer: page size, margins, page breaks, control of orphans and widows, etc.

One of the things I struggled with was the page size. And that is important. While screens operate in pixels, printers don't, and we may not get the expected result if we don't use the right paper size. In the US, the most common would be "letter", but you can specify others like A4, or specific values in px , cm , or other units:

By defining different styles for screens and printers, the visualization in both formats will be completely different:

Comparison of both styling sheets

It may be double the work, but the different results are worth it.

I wrote an article about the importance of metadata in web pages (so they don't get "confused"). It includes information about metadata and microdata (see the following section), and all the content will apply here too.

Here are some things to add to your HTML interactive résumé:

HTML metadata

This is the classic <meta> tags that will contain general information about the document: author, title, description, etc. They are –or used to be– read by search engine crawlers and provide essential information about your page (in this case, your CV).

Some examples:

It may not be as important or relevant as it was before, but it still is. And it is a minor inconvenience to add them.

Social media metadata

We live in a connected world in which the document could potentially be shared in social media. Maybe not so much Facebook or Twitter, but LinkedIn or other professional networks.

So you may want to add OpenGraph meta tags, and maybe some social media meta tags too:

Take into account that these are all suggestions: their content doesn't have to be exactly the same as the HTML meta tags (even when in the end it might), and all of them are optional (especially looking at the picture, which may not be considered appropriate for a CV in some countries while a must in some others.)

Beyond metadata: microdata

While using HTML metadata and semantic tags is a great step, it doesn't provide all the information for a machine to process and understand the data contained in the document. For example, let's look at this code:

A computer will see that simple HTML code and think "Great! there's a section with a title and some content and a link", but it won't have a clue of what that content is. Some programs may be smarter and detect the email, yet the relationship between the content, the email, and the link won't be clear.

Wouldn't it be great if there could be a way to specify it? The good news is there is! By using microdata you can provide additional information about the content in itself. Information that may be obvious for a human reading it, but not so obvious for a machine. Let's make some changes in the code above:

Now the machine will see more than just a section. It will know that the section describes a person named Alvaro Montoro, who has the specified email and URL, and who also is a Web Developer specialized in HTML and CSS.

A human will not be affected by these new attributes in HTML, but the document will get a semantic boost thanks to them... if the machine that processes it understands microdata.

I will not dive into microdata –this section is getting too long already, I'll write a full article about it later if needed–, just know that itemtype is used to identify the type of data, itemprop is for a specific property within the type, and that there are different schemas available (you can see them on Schema.org ), some of which will be helpful to build a curriculum vitae:

  • Person : it can be used to describe yourself, your reference, or any person mentioned in the document.
  • Organization : use it to describe the companies that you worked for.
  • OrganizationRole : this will give details about your positions and roles (mainly title and duration).
  • EducationalOrganization : used for describing the different schools, universities, boot camps, etc. that you took part in.
  • CreativeWork : it can be used to describe any projects or artworks that you created and highlighted in your résumé.

That was another huge article that should probably have been broken into small and more detailed parts (maybe that's next). If you are still here... thank you for reading :)

Great article! It gave me some great ideas while I prep for my next career move. I'd recently began considering using schema.org and JSON-LD in an API but I didn't realize it could be embedded in an HTML document.

I was recently suggested schema.org for designing a DB, but I had never heard of microdata in HTML. Thank you for sharing your process ! Your resume looks great. 👍

I know you're not asking for feedback, but the way you skewed the content on your site leaves outlines on chrome (edit: took a screenshot and tried to add it to the post to show you. Did not work. Confusing.). This does not happen if you use skew instead of how you did it. To counteract the parent skewing all the inside content, you wrap the child content in a container and do a skew opposite of what the parent is (ie: parent skewX(-10), child skewX(10)).

I always welcome suggestions to help me improve the code or learn something new. I will try it and see how it works. Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion 😊

Super interesting article! I think having a personal/portfolio website with a 'resume' page too can help too. Since it's then fully online (and you can use JS), you could have clever interactive sections displaying your skills and showing your experience. Shouldn't replace a traditional 'offline' resume but just in addition to it.

My only problem here is to connect the HTML and CSS to my data base

The idea is to have a static page, but you could do that using JavaScript and/or a server-side language.

Okay thanks

#simple & elegant, lightweight responsive resume (html+css), introduction.

Not everyone is a front end developer/designer and even among us, few of us really enjoy laying out our resumés. Portfolios are exciting, and flashy. Resumés are not, nor should they be. Nor should they be PDF only.

While mobile phones and tablets can view PDFs, PDFs aren't accommodating of screen resolution. During my job hunt, I was tired of attaching PDFs to e-mails and annoyed with some job application systems that asked for an optional Resumés, only to allow .doc format. I do not own MS office and wonderfully formatted Resumés in Pages lose their luster after conversion. It was time to address this problem.

I developed a simple HTML/CSS resumé, with a simple grid system, with a few minor CSS3 effects. I can only testify that this is the resumé that landed me my current job. I have also been on the opposite end, reviewing résumés and while I am not a hiring manager but when asked to help sort through a stack of résumés while normal job duties, one quickly appreciates the clear and elegant résumés. These are tailored to be straight and to the point, suitable for developers,

Project Goals:

  • Create a simple, ultra lightweight atheistically pleasing resumé template.
  • Printable layout
  • Pracitcal and Tasteful
  • Keep the Markup roughly 200 lines of HTML
  • Keep CSS lightweight and media queries minimal
  • Stay Javascript free (The demo uses JQuery for demostration purposes)
  • Provide several layouts (Currently this features two layouts based on experience)

Ideally this resumé will only require basic knowledge of HTML. Job hunting is time consuming / stressful enough as it is writing and proofing cover letters, searching for jobs, interviewing. This template shouldn't make this process worse.

What this isn't

This project will not be a Portfolio. There are alternatives on GitHub.

Coding a Responsive Resume in HTML5/CSS3

Almost everybody in the business section has created a resume at some point. When working as a freelancer you are always vying to land new projects. Because of this transitory work cycle it helps to offer potential clients a brief peek into your past experience. And what a better opportunity than offering your professional resume online?

  • Download Source Code

In this tutorial I want to demonstrate how we can build a responsive single-page resume layout . I’ll be coding everything in HTML5/CSS3 to work properly at various screen resolutions. The resume will also support microdata powered by schema.org for more technical SEO advantages.

Building the Document

I’m starting the webpage with an HTML5 doctype and standard meta elements. But to get this layout responsive we’ll need to setup some additional components. Most of these are typical meta tags and will be supported in all modern-day browsers.

The meta viewport tag is crucial for getting the responsive technique to work on smartphones. We reset the scale as 1:1 so the layout is displayed pixel-perfect. You’ll also notice I have included an external stylesheet from Google Web Fonts . I’m using two custom typefaces “Simonetta” and “Balthazar”. Unique fonts certainly grab your visitor’s attention and fit harmoniously into a single-page design.

I have also setup a small IE conditional which includes some open source scripts for legacy browsers. Internet Explorer 8 and older have issues rendering HTML5 elements and CSS3 media queries. But thankfully some smart developers have figured out how to get these working through JavaScript.

Main Content Blocks

The whole document is wrapped in a div with many various block sections inside. The top <header> tag includes my photo, name, e-mail address, and other important metadata. Afterwards I’ve broken each block into a <section> element for the rest of the content.

As you resize the page these block elements fall beneath each other gracefully. I’ve setup a few different instances of media queries in an external stylesheet. This makes it easier keeping track of styles when going back to edit something later.

Before we jump into detailed CSS I want to explain more about the use of microdata. If you look closely I’ve littered attributes inside many different elements with the names itemtype , itemscope , and itemprop . These all relate to the Schmea project which hopes to offer a data structure for the web.

Formatting Useful Microdata

All of the major search engines including Google, Yahoo!, and Bing have accepted Schema as the best syntax for data markup. By labeling details about yourself it helps these search engines display related results for your content online. Let’s break down how to set these up.

The itemscope attribute is applied to any container which holds information on a schema item. This is always followed by the itemtype attribute, which in this scenario is describing a person . Inside this wrapper div I can label any content by using itemprop along with any of the details listed on their documentation page.

The recommended method is to wrap your content inside a span tag instead of appending directly to the element. When you’re labeling something like a photo you should attach itemprop to the img element directly. But otherwise you’ll have much cleaner markup by wrapping your data in span tags.

How Much is Too Much?

I would argue that there is no limit to the amount of detail you can go into. Microdata is available to help computers recognize people, organizations, products, and other items within an online context. The more information you can offer, the better.

It’s worthwhile to keep and open mind and see how you can use this microdata in aspects of your own website. If you spend 10-15 minutes going through the Schema documentation it’s a lot easier than you’d think. We can look at two solid examples from the resume demo:

When listing my various skills I’ve setup a new container defining the ItemList schema . There wasn’t any type of skillset or experience to list under a Person, so this is a safe alternative. The value here is that Google can understand each itemListElement is related to each other. In this case we have a list of languages and software I know how to work with.

Another good example is the articles listing found at the very bottom. There is a schema setup for articles and blog posts, all related to content found online. I’ve indicated the article URL and date of publication which is more than enough info for these search engine crawlers.

Just keep in mind that microdata is all about formatting content to be organized by computers. This single-page resume is the perfect example to define traits about a specific person. These aren’t going to be useful on every website, but it’s an exciting methodology to understand.

Relative CSS Styles

In this last section let’s take a look into how to style this whole webpage. Towards the top of our stylesheet I’m defining some initial resets and basic element properties. These include headers, list items, and anchor link hover effects.

Nothing too interesting except for some of the custom font stacks. I also grabbed a unique bullet icon instead of using the default “disc”. You can try searching through a directory like Icon Finder when trying to locate a similar design.

There are only a few important block areas on the page which require attention. Of course the wrapper div is setup with extra margins and padding. Also the max width is limited at 900px because any larger size feels like the page has too much whitespace. I’ve also used rounded corners at the bottom of the page for a smoother effect on the eyes.

Responsive Design

Possibly the most crucial aspect of this online resume is the responsive functionality. I have five different breakpoints setup to achieve various effects when resizing the browser window.

The initial 740px is right around where the photo image will clash with our header text. Instead of letting the photo drop-down onto the right side we clear both elements and center the whole layout. I’ve also increased the header text size to leave a more solid impact.

As the window gets smaller I have removed some extra padding from the wrapper div and paragraphs. The next problem we run into after the header is from the skills UL listing. I break down the two-column approach and instead have list items floating next to each other.

This also requires repositioning many of the default text properties. We have to update the line height and reposition each list item’s bullet icon. I’ve set a fixed width so the grid appears more organized until the next breakpoint.

Coding for Smartphones

The last three media queries are small yet very important. As you switch between landscape and portrait mode the iPhone will resize any mobile browser. This is also the case with most Android devices and Windows Mobile phones.

When first hitting 480px or smaller we remove some more padding from the wrapper and also re-size the list items again. Then at 320px I’ve removed some of the margin space outside the document. You can still see the textured background, but it’s not very important on such a slim vertical viewport.

Lastly I’m using max-device-width to target the iPhone device itself, or namely any other mobile screen with a maximum width of 480px. In this case I want to update the list items a bit wider so that they fill in the whole screen. It will only affect the skills listings in landscape view since portrait is too skinny to notice any differences.

Final Thoughts

Working over the Internet often requires at least some type of portfolio online. When you can link to a single page resume with all your details organized together it shows that you mean business. Serious employers and potential clients will fall head over heels for such a charismatic display of professionalism in web design.

I hope you can take some key points away from this tutorial. Freelancers in any location around the world can market themselves with just a bit of technical effort. Feel free to download my demo source code above, and share your thoughts on this article in our comments area.

As with any other skill, practicing on simple, realistic projects helps you build your skills and confidence step-by-step.

But if you are new to HTML and CSS, you may be wondering:

Where can I find ideas for beginner-level HTML and CSS projects?

Even if you are just starting out with HTML and CSS, there are some fun and easy projects you can create.

Whether you are new to learning web development or have some experience under your belt, this guide is the perfect place to start improving your skills.

In this article, I’ll walk you through 32 fun HTML and CSS coding projects that are easy to follow. We will start with beginner-level projects and then move on to more demanding ones.

If you want to become a professional front-end developer, the projects below will help you expand your portfolio.

When it’s time to apply for your first entry-level job, you can showcase your skills to potential employers with a portfolio packed with real-life project examples.

Let’s get started!

What are HTML and CSS?

HTML and CSS are the most fundamental languages for front-end web development.

Learning them will allow you to:

  • Build stunning websites
  • Start a coding blog
  • Make money freelancing

Let’s take a quick look at both of them next:

What is HTML?

HTML or HyperText Markup Language is the standard markup language for all web pages worldwide.

It’s not a “typical” programming language like Python or Java since it doesn’t contain any programming logic. HTML can’t perform data manipulations or calculations, for example.

Instead, HTML allows you to create and format the fundamental structure and content of a web page.

You will use HTML to create:

  • Page layouts (header, body, footer, sidebar)
  • Paragraphs and headings
  • Input fields
  • Checkboxes and radio buttons
  • Embedded media

Thus, HTML only allows you to determine the structure of a web page and place individual content elements within it.

For more details, check out my post on what HTML is and how it works .

You can’t format the look and feel of your web page with HTML, though.

Your HTML web page will look dull and boring. Sort of like this:

The first HTML WWW website ever built

The example above is the first web page every built for the WWW , by the way.

This is how websites used to look in the ’90s. But we’ve come a long way since.

To make your HTML content visually appealing and professional-looking, you need another language: CSS. Let’s look at that next.

What is CSS?

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language that allows you to adjust the design and feel of your HTML content.

Thus, CSS allows you to turn your pure-HTML pages into stunning, modern websites. And it’s easy to learn, too!

CSS allows you to target individual HTML elements and apply different styling rules to them.

For example, here’s a CSS rule that targets H2 headings, their font-size property, and sets it to a value of 24px:

You can use CSS to adjust:

  • Page layouts and sections
  • Backgrounds
  • Fonts and text styling
  • Spacings (paddings, margins)
  • Borders and shadows
  • CSS animations
  • Responsiveness (with media queries)

If you want to create stunning websites and become a front-end web developer, CSS is one of the first tools you must learn and master.

For more details, check out my post on what CSS is and how it works .

Why build HTML and CSS projects?

Practicing on realistic, hands-on projects is the best way to learn how to create something useful and meaningful with HTML and CSS.

The more projects you finish, the more confidence you build.

To build a web page from scratch you need a basic understanding of how HTML works. You should be comfortable with writing the necessary HTML code to create a page without copying a boilerplate or following a tutorial.

Thus, if you want to become a front-end web developer , building HTML and CSS projects will teach you how to use these two languages in real life.

Therefore, practising your skills with the projects in this article will give you a competitive edge against anyone who’s simply following tutorials and copy-pasting other people’s code.

Finally, building HTML and CSS projects helps you build a professional portfolio of real-world projects.

When it’s time to start applying for your first job, you will have 10 to 20 cool projects to showcase your skills to potential employers. Not bad!

Now, before you start building full-scale web pages with HTML and CSS, you want to set up your basic HTML and CSS website layout first.

The idea is to divide your page into logical HTML sections. That way, you can start filling those sections with the right elements and content faster.

For example, you can break up the body of your page into multiple parts:

  • Header: <header>
  • Navigation: <nav>
  • Content: <article>
  • Sidebar: <aside>
  • Footer: <footer>

HTML web page structure example

Depending on your project, you can fill the article area with a blog post, photos, or other content you need to present.

This layout project will serve as a starting point for all your future HTML and CSS projects, so don’t skip it.

Having a template like this will speed up your next projects, because you won’t have to start from scratch.

Here are two tutorials that will walk you through the steps of creating a basic website layout using HTML and CSS:

Building a tribute page is fantastic HTML and CSS practice for beginners.

What should your tribute page be about?

Anything you like!

Build a tribute page about something you love spending time with.

Here are a few examples:

  • a person you like
  • your favorite food
  • a travel destination
  • your home town

My first HTML-only tribute page was for beetroots. Yes, beetroots. I mean, why not?

Beetroot Base HTML Page

HTML and CSS concepts you will practice:

  • HTML page structure
  • basic HTML elements: headings, paragraphs, lists
  • embedding images with HTML
  • CSS fundamentals: fonts and colors
  • CSS paddings, margins, and borders

Here’s a helpful tutorial for building a HTML and CSS tribute page .

Whether you want to become a full-time web developer or a freelance web designer, you will use HTML forms in almost every project.

Forms allow you to build:

  • Contact forms
  • Login forms
  • Sign up forms
  • Survey forms

Building a survey page allows you to practice HTML input tags, form layouts, radio buttons, checkboxes, and more.

Pick any topic you like and come up with 10 pieces of information you want to collect from respondents.

Perhaps an employee evaluation form? Or a customer satisfaction form?

  • form elements: input fields, dropdowns, radio buttons, labels
  • styling for forms and buttons

Here’s an example survey form project for inspiration:

See the Pen Good Vibes Form by Laurence ( @laurencenairne ) on CodePen .

Let’s practice those HTML forms a bit more, shall we?

For this project, you will build a sign-up or log-in page with the necessary input fields for a username and a password.

Because we can create a user profile on almost every website, forms are absolutely essential for allowing people to set their usernames and passwords.

Your forms will collect inputs from users and a separate back-end program will know how to store and process that data.

Creating a clean and clear sign-up page can be surprisingly difficult. The more you learn about HTML and CSS, the more content you want to create to showcase your skills. But the thing is: a sign-up page needs to be as clean and easy-to-use as possible.

Thus, the biggest challenge with this project is to keep it simple, clear, and light.

Here’s an example project to get started with:

See the Pen Learn HTML Forms by Building a Registration Form by Noel ( @WaterNic10 ) on CodePen .

Using a HTML form is the best way to collect information from job applicants.

You can also generate and format a job description at the top of the page.

Then, create a simple job application form below to collect at least 10 pieces of information.

Use these HTML elements, for example:

  • Text fields
  • Email fields
  • Radio buttons

Here’s an example job application page you can build with HTML and CSS:

See the Pen Simple Job Application Form Example by Getform ( @getform ) on CodePen .

One of your first HTML and CSS projects should be a simple landing page.

Your landing page can focus on a local business, an event, or a product launch, for example.

Landing pages play an important role for new businesses, marketing campaigns, and product launches. As a front-end developer, you will be asked to create them for clients.

For this project, create a simple HTML file and style it with CSS. Be sure to include a headline, some text about the company or its services, and a call-to-action (CTA) button.

Make sure that your landing page is clean and clear and that it’s easy to read.

If you build a landing page for a new product, highlight the product’s key benefits and features.

To get started, follow this freeCodeCamp tutorial to build a simple landing page . You will need JavaScript for a few features. If you are not familiar with JavaScript, leave those features out for now and come back to them later.

A product landing page is a page that you build to promote a specific product or service.

For example, if you want to sell your ebook about how to use CSS to build an animated website, then you would create a product landing page for it.

Your product landing page can be very simple to start with. When your skills improve, add some complexity depending on what kind of information you need to present.

One of the most iconic product landing pages is the iPhone product page by Apple, for example:

Apple iPhone product landing page example

Of course, the iPhone landing page is technically complex, so you won’t build it as your first project. But still, it’s a good place to find inspiration and new ideas.

The best way to design your first product landing page is to create a simple wireframe first. Sketch your page layout on paper before you start building it.

Wireframes help you maintain a clear overview of your HTML sections and elements.

To get started, browse through these product landing page examples for some inspiration .

Building an interactive navigation bar will teach you how to create an animated menu with dropdowns using HTML and CSS.

This is another great project for beginners, because it will teach you how to create menus using HTML and CSS. You’ll also learn how to style them with different colors, fonts, and effects.

You’ll also learn how to use anchors and pseudo-classes to create the menu navigation, as well as how to create the dropdown menus from scratch.

If you aren’t familiar with CSS media queries yet, building a responsive navigation bar is a smart way to learn and practice them.

CSS media queries allow you to create a responsive navigation menu that changes its size and layout depending on screen width.

To get started, check out this tutorial on how to build an interactive navigation bar with HTML and CSS .

One of the best ways to practice your HTML and CSS skills is to create custom website headers. This is a great project to add to your portfolio website, as it will show off your skills and help you attract new clients.

There are a number of different ways that you can create a stylish and responsive website header. One option is to use a premade CSS framework such as Bootstrap or Foundation. Alternatively, you can create your own custom styles by hand.

No matter which option you choose, be sure to make your header mobile-friendly by using media queries. This will ensure that your header looks great on all devices, regardless of their screen size or resolution.

To get started, check out this simple example for a responsive HTML and CSS header .

If you’re looking to get into web development, one of the best HTML and CSS projects you can build is a simple restaurant menu.

Align the different foods and drinks using a CSS layout grid.

Add prices, images, and other elements you need to give it a professional, clean look and feel.

Choose a suitable color palette, fonts, and stock photos.

You can also add photos or a gallery for individual dishes. If you want to add an image slider, you can create one with HTML and CSS, too.

Here’s an example of a very simple restaurant menu project:

See the Pen Simple CSS restaurant menu by Viszked Tamas Andras ( @ViszkY ) on CodePen .

Once you’ve built your restaurant menu with, it’s time to tackle a more complex HTML and CSS project.

Building a real-life restaurant website is a fun way to practice a ton of HTML and CSS topics.

Not only will you learn the basics of creating a beautiful, professional web page, but you also get a chance to practice responsive web design, too.

And if you’re looking to land your first front-end web developer job, having a well-designed business website in your portfolio will help you stand out from the crowd.

Restaurant website example project with HTML and CSS

Make sure your website matches the restaurant’s menu and target clientele. A fine-dining place on Manhattan will have a different website than a simple (but delicious!) diner in rural Wisconsin.

Here are a few key details to include on your restaurant website:

  • Clear navigation bar
  • Restaurant details
  • Menu for food and drinks
  • Location and directions
  • Contact details
  • Upcoming events

To get started, check out this free tutorial on how to build a restaurant website with HTML and CSS .

To build a parallax website, you will include fixed background images that stay in place when you scroll down the page.

Although the parallax look isn’t as popular or modern as it was a few years back, web designers still use the effect a lot.

The easiest way to build a parallax HTML and CSS project is to start with a fixed background image for the entire page.

After that, you can experiment with parallax effects for individual sections.

Create 3-5 sections for your page, fill them with content, and set a fixed background image for 1-2 sections of your choice.

Word of warning: Don’t overdo it. Parallax effects can be distracting, so only use them as a subtle accent where suitable.

Here’s an example project with HTML and CSS source code:

See the Pen CSS-Only Parallax Effect by Yago Estévez ( @yagoestevez ) on CodePen .

404 error pages are usually boring and generic, right?

But when a visitor can’t find what they’re searching for, you don’t want them to leave your website.

Instead, you should build a custom 404 error page that’s helpful and valuable, and even fun and entertaining.

A great 404 page can make users smile and – more importantly – help them find what they are looking for. Your visitors will appreciate your effort, trust me.

For some inspiration, check out these custom 404 page examples .

Any web developer will tell you that having a strong portfolio is essential to landing your first job.

Your portfolio is a chance to show off your skills and demonstrate your expertise in front-end web development.

And while there are many ways to create a portfolio website, building one from scratch using HTML and CSS will give you tons of valuable practice.

Your first version can be a single-page portfolio. As your skills improve, continue adding new pages, content, and features. Make this your pet project!

Remember to let your personality shine through, too. It will help you stand out from the crowd of other developers who are vying for the same jobs.

Introduce yourself and share a few details about your experience and future plans.

Employers and clients want to see how you can help them solve problems. Thus, present your services and emphasize the solutions you can deliver with your skills.

Add your CV and share a link to your GitHub account to showcase your most relevant work samples.

Make sure to embed a few key projects directly on your portfolio website, too.

Finally, let your visitors know how to get in touch with you easily. If you want, you can add links to your social media accounts, too.

In this project, you’ll create a simple blog post page using HTML and CSS.

You’ll need to design the layout of the page, add a title, a featured image, and of course add some content to your dummy blog post.

You can also add a sidebar with a few helpful links and widgets, like:

  • An author bio with a photo
  • Links to social media profiles
  • List of most recent blog posts
  • List of blog post categories

Once your HTML structure and content are in place, it’s time to style everything with CSS.

Photography website with a gallery

If you’re a photographer or just enjoy taking pictures, then this project is for you.

Build a simple photo gallery website using HTML and CSS to practice your web design skills.

Start with the basic HTML structure of the page, and figure out a cool layout grid for the photos. You will need to embed the photos and style everything beautiful with CSS.

My tip: Use CSS Flexbox and media queries to create a responsive galleries that look great on all devices.

Here’s a full tutorial for building a gallery website with HTML and CSS:

If you love music, why not practice your HTML and CSS skills by building a music store web page?

Before you start, make a thorough plan about your website structure. What’s the purpose of your music store? What genres will you cover?

Pick a suitable color palette, choose your fonts, and any background images you want to use.

My tip: If you feature album cover images, keep your colors and fonts as clean and simple as possible. You don’t want to overpower the album covers with a busy web page with tons of different colors and mismatching fonts.

Create a user-friendly menu and navigation inside the header. Fill the footer with helpful links for your store, career page, contact details, and newsletter form, for example.

Building a music store website with HTML and CSS is a great opportunity to practice your skills while you are still learning.

Start with very basic features, and add new ones as your skills improve. For example, you can add media queries to make your website responsive.

A forum is a great way to create a community around a topic or interest, and it’s also a great way to practice your coding skills.

In this project, you’ll create a simple forum website using HTML and CSS.

You’ll need to design the layout of the site, add categories and forums, and set up some initial content.

Of course, you should start with creating the basic layout and structure with HTML first. You will need a navigation bar, at least one sidebar, and an area for the main content.

To make your discussion forum website more interesting, add new content and remember to interlink related threads to make the site feel more realistic.

Event or conference web page

Creating a web page for an event is a fun HTML and CSS project for beginners.

You can either pick a real event and build a better landing page than the real one, or come up with an imaginary conference, for example.

Make sure to include these elements:

  • Register button
  • Venue details
  • Dates and schedule
  • Speakers and key people
  • Directions (how to get there)
  • Accommodation details

Divide the landing page into sections, and create a header and a footer with menus and quick links.

Come up with a suitable color palette, pick your fonts, and keep your design clean and clear.

Every programming language, software, device and gadget has a technical documentation for helpful information and support.

Creating a technical documentation website with just HTML and CSS allows you to build a multi-page site with hierarchies, links, and breadcrumbs.

The main idea is to create a multi-page website where you have a sidebar menu on the left, and the content on the right.

The left-hand side contains a vertical menu with all the topics your documentation covers.

The right-hand side presents the description and all the details for each individual topic.

For simplicity, start with the homepage and 2–3 subpages first. Come up with a clean layout and make sure your links are working properly.

Then, start expanding the website with additional sub-pages, content, and elements.

  • HTML hyperlinks and buttons

Creating an online recipe book as an HTML and CSS project requires a similar setup than the previous project example.

You will need to create a homepage that serves as a directory for all your recipes. Then, create a separate subpage for each recipe.

If you want to challenge yourself, add recipe categories and create separate directory pages for each of them.

  • embedding recipe photos

One of the best ways to practice HTML and CSS is to clone an existing web page from scratch.

Use your browser’s inspecting tools to get an idea of how the page is built.

As with any HTML and CSS project, start by creating the basic page template with:

Then, divide your page into sections, rows, and columns.

Finally, fill your page with individual elements like headings, paragraphs, and images.

Once the HTML content is in place, use CSS to style your page.

Start with something simple, like the PayPal login page.

Then move on to more demanding cloning projects, such as a news website. Try the BBC homepage, for example.

Jacob deGrom To Begin Rehab Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | August 19, 2024 at 6:04pm CDT

Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom is set to begin a rehab assignment this week. The righty himself tells Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today ( X link ) that he’ll likely start for Double-A Frisco on Thursday. Manager Bruce Bochy says that it will either be Thursday or Friday, which will be the first of four rehab outings, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on X . If all goes according to plan, the righty could be back in the majors by September 10.

deGrom underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last year and is now about 14 months removed from that procedure. Once upon a time, it seemed as though deGrom would be part of a trio of heroes riding in to help the Rangers in the second half of 2024. Tyler Mahle also underwent Tommy John surgery last year and was slated for a midseason return, while Max Scherzer opened the season on the IL after undergoing offseason back surgery.

The 2023 World Series champions hoped that they could stay afloat through the first half of 2024 with a strong offense and a rotation mix consisting of Nathan Eovaldi , Jon Gray , Andrew Heaney , Michael Lorenzen , Cody Bradford , Dane Dunning and others. Ideally, they would have gotten stronger throughout the year and made a strong push in defending their title.

It hasn’t exactly played out that way, unfortunately. The team’s hitters have slashed a collective .239/.308/.381 for a 94 wRC+, putting them ahead of just seven teams in the majors. On top of that, the pitching has been a challenging carousel for the club all year. Due to various ailments, no one on the pitching staff has reached 130 innings pitched yet this year, while Eovaldi and Heaney are the only guys currently on the team with more than 100 frames. Lorenzen was traded to the Royals at the deadline and both Gray and Scherzer are currently on the IL.

The combination of injuries and some struggles around the roster have bumped the Rangers towards the back of the American League playoff race. They are 11 games back of the Astros in the West and then 12.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. The Playoff Odds at FanGraphs give them just a 0.2% chance of cracking the postseason while the PECOTA Standings at Baseball Prospectus are slightly more bullish at 0.8%.

At this point, the club is likely viewing deGrom’s return less as a spark plug for a 2024 postseason push and more about getting a few starts under his belt in preparation for the 2025 campaign. He and the Rangers signed a five-year, $185MM deal heading into 2023, though he’s only been able to make six starts on that deal so far, due to his aforementioned surgery.

The club managed to win the World Series last year even without him, but there’s still three years left on that deal, making him a key part of their next chapter. The righty has been one of the better pitchers in the world over the past decade, though the injuries have been an issue in recent years.

From 2014 to the present, he has a 2.53 earned run average in 1,356 1/3 innings pitched, striking out 31% of batters faced while only walking 5.8%. Among pitchers with at least 700 innings in that time, only Clayton Kershaw has a lower ERA while only Scherzer and Chris Sale topped deGrom in terms of strikeout rate.

In recent years, deGrom has provided even higher quality but with less quantity. He topped 200 innings from 2017 to 2019 but hasn’t even hit 100 since. The 2020 season was shortened to just 60 games by the pandemic and then deGrom missed time in the two subsequent seasons due to right side tightness, right forearm tightness and a stress reaction on his right scapula.

From 2020 to the present, he has tossed 254 2/3 innings with a 2.12 ERA and incredible 42% strikeout rate. That punchout rate is tops among all pitchers with at least 250 innings in that stretch, with Spencer Strider a distant second at 36.9%, while only reliever Emmanuel Clase bests deGrom in the ERA department.

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what kind of form deGrom will be in when he returns. He is now 36 years old and coming off a lengthy injury absence. He also hasn’t been able to make more than 15 starts in a season since 2019.

The Rangers are set to lose both Scherzer and Heaney to free agency in a couple of months. Eovaldi could be joining them, as his deal has a conditional $20MM player option that he unlocks if he totals 300 innings pitched over 2023 and 2024 or finishes in the top five in Cy Young voting this year. Even if he unlocks that option, he might turn it down and head to the open market since he’s having a strong season and could secure a bigger guarantee over a longer deal in free agency.

If Eovaldi does depart, then the 2025 Ranger rotation on paper is deGrom, Gray, Mahle, Dunning and Bradford, with both Gray and Mahle slated for free agency after next year. Jack Leiter and Owen White are each on the 40-man roster but both have dealt with control problems.

Taken all together, deGrom’s form in the coming years figures to be a significant factor for the Rangers, considering how much they have invested in him and that there’s not a lot of long-term certainty in the rotation picture.

That’s awesome. Hope he comes back to he’s old self.

“Jacob deGrom To Begin Rehab Assignment” – Death and Taxes

' src=

Would have been highly anticipated if Texas were playing for a playoff spot. Instead we look toward 2025 in hopes deGrom finds his old form.

' src=

Damaged goods, should just retire. Not a hall of famer in my book but he was a decent Met. Steve Cohen is retiring players numbers that do not deserve it. Keith Hernandez, Doc Gooden, Willie Mays are all undeserving. I can see them trying to retire Degroms number in the future. Awful franchise

' src=

Low energy troll job. You’re supposed to make it sound like you’re a fan. Went a little overboard trashing Keith, Doc, and especially Willie. Rein it in a bit.

' src=

Really dumb comment.

' src=

“Dumb comment”. I believe that was the whole point, to make a silly, incendiary comment to get a rise out of you. That comment was so dumb, it didn’t even really deserve a response.

' src=

LFGMets: If you hate the Mets so much, why is that your username?

' src=

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

ny papi: I’m probably less religious than you, but I say let his soul have whatever it’s got coming.

I’m not really the religious type but this Billy Madison quote was very fitting with what he said, or pretty much fitting every time something spews from him

I wonder how hard degrom will throw after TJ

It could be 96 as his new max, or he could throw harder and fire 102 all the time

Who knows what his velocity will be like. His fastball had life on it, I don’t think he’s going to recover that right away. Honestly, Degrom won’t be at full strength until February 2025 when pitchers and catchers report for spring training. I could be wrong, I’m no expert, just making an observation.

' src=

Part of the reason why he had to undergo Tommy John surgery was the fact that he threw almost every pitch over 100 mph

I’ve never heard anyone say “I want my favorite pitcher to get TJ!”

But imagine what ohtani and degrom will throw when they get completely healthy…

' src=

Almost sounds like you are under the impression that TJS makes you throw harder.

In reality most never regain top velo

' src=

I realize it isn’t easy to do but degrom could think about adding some new pitches to his game to protect his arm, shoulder, elbow etc. A sinker, a cutter; experiment with different grips.

As an example Frank Tanana was a remarkable story as he reinvented himself about 3 different times in his career. Degrom already has lifetime $ and a ring, now he could work toward a 2nd ring that he played a bigger part in. He could reorganize his contract and defer, back load some $ to help TEX at other positions

' src=

This was his second UCL surgery. It is most definitely not given that he can comeback to his old self.

' src=

True. His former hard-throwing teammate, one nicknamed Thor, never recovered fully from his first TJS. On the flip side, Nathan Eovaldi returned from his second TJS better than ever.

' src=

Worse human I have met

' src=

Too little, too late for 2024. Please stay healthy for 2025.

' src=

This is why Texas wasn’t able to insure deGrom’s contract. The only thing they could do was put a team option based on injury because the insurance was incredibly expensive.

' src=

What I would give for one more season where deGrom, Trout, and Kershaw all stay healthy for a full season.

“What I would give”…Clayton Kershaw has had plenty of healthy seasons, but is now in the twilight of his career. Don’t get me started on Mike Trout, because it’s highly disappointing to have MLB’s best player constantly on the IL, although he too had many healthy(and MVP) seasons during the first half of his career. We should all probably condition ourselves to the fact that we’ll never again see all 3 players healthy and playing at their usual level.

' src=

Unfortunately, that’s life. Sports fans have been “gypped” for generations. Tony Conigliaro, Herb Score, Jose Fernandez, etc. It’s part of life.

' src=

So if “deGrom” starts a sentence, it’s still not capitalized?!? Fascinating. You can learn something new everyday.

At one point, the Mets had deGrom, d’Arnaud, and den Dekker at the same time.

' src=

At least the Mets aren’t paying him like Scherzer & Verlander to pitch not for them.

In retrospect, it wasn’t a good plan.

' src=

You have to hand it to the guy for persevering…he’ll probably drop it and tear a ligament, but still…

' src=

Wishing deGrom the best. Who knows what he has left. Was sad to see him go but the Mets dodged a bullet not resigning him. I know things did really work out with Verlander but Texas has to pay deGrom for 3 more seasons.

He was actually quite durable from when he was called up partway into 2014 through 2020. 2020-24 a different story.

Top Mets prospect Jett Williams starts rehab assignment ahead of hopeful late-season return

Jett Williams hasn't played since April 21 due to a wrist injury that required surgery, but he will be back in action on Wednesday.

Williams, the No. 1 player on SNY's Top 30 Mets prospects list , is set to begin a rehab assignment with Low-A St. Lucie.

Before having surgery on June 7, Williams initially attempted to rehab his injury. But the lack of progress led to a right wrist TFCC debridement procedure.

Williams tore through three levels of the Mets' farm system in 2023, slashing .263/.425/.451 with 13 homers, 22 doubles, 55 RBI, 81 runs scored, and 45 stolen bases across St. Lucie, High-A Brooklyn, and Double-A Binghamton.

His 2023 campaign cemented him as the top prospect in the Mets' system and one of the best prospects in all of baseball, and -- before the wrist injury robbed him of most of the 2024 season -- there was a thought that he could possibly make his big league debut this season.

Before hurting his wrist, Williams was off to an uneven start in Binghamton, hitting .180 in 11 games with a .360 OBP.

If all goes well for Williams during his rehab assignment, it stands to reason that he could return to Binghamton around the beginning of September.

The Rumble Ponies' regular season ends on Sept. 15.

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese has had quite an impressive WNBA season thus far, filled with breaking records and making headlines. Now, she's added another league record to her resume courtesy of historic double-doubles.

Despite a 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday, Aug. 18, Reese, 22, still managed to make WNBA history.

As she racked up her fourth straight double-double during the game, Reese officially became the fastest player in league history to score 20 double-doubles, a feat she accomplished in just 27 games, according to Sports Illustrated .

Reese is currently averaging 13.6 points and 12.3 rebounds on 39.8% shooting so far this season, per the outlet.

Since she was selected by the Chicago Sky at the 2024 WNBA Draft in April, the former LSU star has had a record-breaking season to date. The first-year standout became the first rookie in league history to rack up a triple-double.

Back in July, it was announced that Reese was the latest WNBA star to join the burgeoning 3-on-3 basketball league.

In an official announcement posted to Instagram on July 24, the Unrivaled basketball league revealed that Reese has joined the league. “The Barbie is Unrivaled,” read the caption for Unrivaled and Reese's joint post. "10/30."

Reese is now the 10th WNBA player to join the new league, which was created by fellow players Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, according to Sports Illustrated .

The expanding roster currently includes WNBA players Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Kahleah Cooper and Jackie Young — with 20 additional players expected to be added in the coming months.
