The Internet can easily be viewed as a single greatest factor that shapes the contemporary world. Since its emergence and popularization two decades ago it has changed the way humans handle information and improved on every single aspect of our lives related to it including education, media, trade, culture, and social interactions (Pew Research Center). The growing online presence also created an unprecedented visibility opportunities, which immediately raised privacy concerns. With the increasing number of controversies surrounding the safety of personal information, the Internet has been termed by some “the final blow to privacy.” However, I argue that while it certainly changed the way we perceive safety of information, the situation may be far less grim than portrayed by sensationalist media.

It is hard to argue that the Internet opened up numerous vulnerable spots in our personal spaces. It has become extremely easy to post a silly photograph and end up being bullied by the entire country. The recent history of the Web is abundant with the cases such as the Dog Poo Girl – a woman from Korea whose photograph was published online as an attempt to persuade her to clean after her dog in the subway. Initially intended as a righteous act, the disclosure quickly got out of control and reached threatening proportions (“Dog Poo Girl”). On some occasions, such events led to tragic outcomes. In fact, Facebook is named as a reason behind the divorce in one case out of three (Chatel). Numerous examples exist where the information published online cost people their jobs (Price). To further complicate the matter, the very premise of safe online communication seems to be threatened by the recent developments in the legal sphere (Wagner). There is little doubt that privacy as we know it is under real threat.

At this point, it is worth pointing out the “as we know it” part of the allegation. I argue that it is our understanding of privacy that provides the solution and that the Internet is the biggest factor that influences it. From my personal experience, I can say that several years ago, when social network resources were gaining popularity, users (especially young ones) were absolutely reckless in setting up their accounts. Any friendship request could be confirmed instantly, and privacy policy was something utterly boring and hardly necessary. In comparison, today the majority of youth know how to configure the essential privacy settings and how to spot a suspicious link (Madden et al.).

While the former example could be interpreted by some as an illustration of the potential threat created by the Web to the inexperienced users, I suggest that it actually illustrates our pre-Internet understanding of information safety. In other words, by facing the controversial cases like that of the Dog Poo Girl, we learn to acknowledge responsibilities for sensitive information (both ours and that of others) and make conscious decisions instead of happily agreeing to everything. Essentially, prior to the emergence of the Internet, we had little opportunity to manage our information in a way that presented a feasible threat and, because of that, had only a vague idea of the concept of privacy.

Considering the information above, it would be tempting to say that the Internet taught us to handle the very threat it created. I do not think this is the case. Rather it presented the problem on the level that is easy to grasp and illustrative enough to communicate the importance of privacy to people. Safety of information has always been crucial – the Web just made it relevant and approachable enough to become a universal issue. I consider it a good thing, and while there is no doubt that it creates risks, we certainly are capable of handling them.

Pew Research Center has a long history of studying technology adoption trends and the impact of digital technology on society. This report focuses on American adults’ experiences with and attitudes about their internet and technology use during the COVID-19 outbreak. For this analysis, we surveyed 4,623 U.S. adults from April 12-18, 2021. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the  ATP’s methodology .

Chapter 1 of this report includes responses to an open-ended question and the overall report includes a number of quotations to help illustrate themes and add nuance to the survey findings. Quotations may have been lightly edited for grammar, spelling and clarity. The first three themes mentioned in each open-ended response, according to a researcher-developed codebook, were coded into categories for analysis.

The  coronavirus  has transformed many aspects of Americans’ lives. It  shut down  schools, businesses and workplaces and forced millions to  stay at home  for extended lengths of time. Public health authorities recommended  limits on social contact  to try to contain the spread of the virus, and these profoundly altered the way many worked, learned, connected with loved ones, carried out basic daily tasks, celebrated and mourned. For some, technology played a role in this transformation.  

Results from a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults conducted April 12-18, 2021, reveal the extent to which people’s use of the internet has changed, their views about how helpful technology has been for them and the struggles some have faced. 

The vast majority of adults (90%) say the internet has been at least important to them personally during the pandemic, the survey finds. The share who say it has been  essential  – 58% – is up slightly from 53% in April 2020. There have also been upticks in the shares who say the internet has been essential in the past year among those with a bachelor’s degree or more formal education, adults under 30, and those 65 and older. 

A large majority of Americans (81%) also say they talked with others via video calls at some point since the pandemic’s onset. And for 40% of Americans, digital tools have taken on new relevance: They report they used technology or the internet in ways that were new or different to them. Some also sought upgrades to their service as the pandemic unfolded: 29% of broadband users did something to improve the speed, reliability or quality of their high-speed internet connection at home since the beginning of the outbreak.

Still, tech use has not been an unmitigated boon for everyone. “ Zoom fatigue ” was widely speculated to be a problem in the pandemic, and some Americans report related experiences in the new survey: 40% of those who have ever talked with others via video calls since the beginning of the pandemic say they have felt worn out or fatigued often or sometimes by the time they spend on them. Moreover,  changes in screen time  occurred for  Americans generally  and for  parents of young children . The survey finds that a third of all adults say they tried to cut back on time spent on their smartphone or the internet at some point during the pandemic. In addition, 72% of parents of children in grades K-12 say their kids are spending more time on screens compared with before the outbreak. 1

For many, digital interactions could only do so much as a stand-in for in-person communication. About two-thirds of Americans (68%) say the interactions they would have had in person, but instead had online or over the phone, have generally been useful – but not a replacement for in-person contact. Another 15% say these tools haven’t been of much use in their interactions. Still, 17% report that these digital interactions have been just as good as in-person contact.

Some types of technology have been more helpful than others for Americans. For example, 44% say text messages or group messaging apps have helped them a lot to stay connected with family and friends, 38% say the same about voice calls and 30% say this about video calls. Smaller shares say social media sites (20%) and email (19%) have helped them in this way.

The survey offers a snapshot of Americans’ lives just over one year into the pandemic as they reflected back on what had happened. It is important to note the findings were gathered in April 2021, just before  all U.S. adults became eligible for coronavirus vaccine s. At the time, some states were  beginning to loosen restrictions  on businesses and social encounters. This survey also was fielded before the delta variant  became prominent  in the United States,  raising concerns  about new and  evolving variants .

Americans’ tech experiences in the pandemic are linked to digital divides, tech readiness 

Some Americans’ experiences with technology haven’t been smooth or easy during the pandemic. The digital divides related to  internet use  and  affordability  were highlighted by the pandemic and also emerged in new ways as life moved online.

For all Americans relying on screens during the pandemic,  connection quality  has been important for school assignments, meetings and virtual social encounters alike. The new survey highlights difficulties for some: Roughly half of those who have a high-speed internet connection at home (48%) say they have problems with the speed, reliability or quality of their home connection often or sometimes. 2

Beyond that, affordability  remained a persistent concern  for a portion of digital tech users as the pandemic continued – about a quarter of home broadband users (26%) and smartphone owners (24%) said in the April 2021 survey that they worried a lot or some about paying their internet and cellphone bills over the next few months. 

From parents of children facing the “ homework gap ” to Americans struggling to  afford home internet , those with lower incomes have been particularly likely to struggle. At the same time, some of those with higher incomes have been affected as well.

Affordability and connection problems have hit broadband users with lower incomes especially hard. Nearly half of broadband users with lower incomes, and about a quarter of those with midrange incomes, say that as of April they were at least somewhat worried about paying their internet bill over the next few months. 3 And home broadband users with lower incomes are roughly 20 points more likely to say they often or sometimes experience problems with their connection than those with relatively high incomes. Still, 55% of those with lower incomes say the internet has been essential to them personally in the pandemic.

At the same time, Americans’ levels of formal education are associated with their experiences turning to tech during the pandemic. 

Those with a bachelor’s or advanced degree are about twice as likely as those with a high school diploma or less formal education to have used tech in new or different ways during the pandemic. There is also roughly a 20 percentage point gap between these two groups in the shares who have made video calls about once a day or more often and who say these calls have helped at least a little to stay connected with family and friends. And 71% of those with a bachelor’s degree or more education say the internet has been essential, compared with 45% of those with a high school diploma or less.

More broadly, not all Americans believe they have key tech skills. In this survey, about a quarter of adults (26%) say they usually need someone else’s help to set up or show them how to use a new computer, smartphone or other electronic device. And one-in-ten report they have little to no confidence in their ability to use these types of devices to do the things they need to do online. This report refers to those who say they experience either or both of these issues as having “lower tech readiness.” Some 30% of adults fall in this category. (A full description of how this group was identified can be found in  Chapter 3. )

These struggles are particularly acute for older adults, some of whom have had to  learn new tech skills  over the course of the pandemic. Roughly two-thirds of adults 75 and older fall into the group having lower tech readiness – that is, they either have little or no confidence in their ability to use their devices, or generally need help setting up and learning how to use new devices. Some 54% of Americans ages 65 to 74 are also in this group. 

Americans with lower tech readiness have had different experiences with technology during the pandemic. While 82% of the Americans with lower tech readiness say the internet has been at least important to them personally during the pandemic, they are less likely than those with higher tech readiness to say the internet has been essential (39% vs. 66%). Some 21% of those with lower tech readiness say digital interactions haven’t been of much use in standing in for in-person contact, compared with 12% of those with higher tech readiness.

As school moved online for many families, parents and their children experienced profound changes. Fully 93% of parents with K-12 children at home say these children had some online instruction during the pandemic. Among these parents, 62% report that online learning has gone very or somewhat well, and 70% say it has been very or somewhat easy for them to help their children use technology for online instruction.

Still, 30% of the parents whose children have had online instruction during the pandemic say it has been very or somewhat difficult for them to help their children use technology or the internet for this. 

The survey also shows that children from households with lower incomes who faced school closures in the pandemic have been especially likely to encounter tech-related obstacles in completing their schoolwork – a phenomenon contributing to the “ homework gap .”

Overall, about a third (34%) of all parents whose children’s schools closed at some point say their children have encountered at least one of the tech-related issues we asked about amid COVID-19: having to do schoolwork on a cellphone, being unable to complete schoolwork because of lack of computer access at home, or having to use public Wi-Fi to finish schoolwork because there was no reliable connection at home. 

This share is higher among parents with lower incomes whose children’s schools closed. Nearly half (46%) say their children have faced at least one of these issues. Some with higher incomes were affected as well – about three-in-ten (31%) of these parents with midrange incomes say their children faced one or more of these issues, as do about one-in-five of these parents with higher household incomes.

Prior Center work has documented this “ homework gap ” in other contexts – both  before the coronavirus outbreak  and  near the beginning of the pandemic . In April 2020, for example, parents with lower incomes were particularly likely to think their children would face these struggles amid the outbreak.

Besides issues related to remote schooling, other changes were afoot in families as the pandemic forced many families to shelter in place. For instance, parents’ estimates of their children’s screen time – and family rules around this – changed in some homes. About seven-in-ten parents with children in kindergarten through 12th grade (72%) say their children were spending more time on screens as of the April survey compared with before the outbreak. Some 39% of parents with school-age children say they have become less strict about screen time rules during the outbreak. About one-in-five (18%) say they have become more strict, while 43% have kept screen time rules about the same. 

More adults now favor the idea that schools should provide digital technology to all students during the pandemic than did in April 2020

Americans’ tech struggles related to digital divides gained attention from policymakers and news organizations as the pandemic progressed.

On some policy issues, public attitudes changed over the course of the outbreak – for example, views on what K-12 schools should provide to students shifted. Some 49% now say K-12 schools have a responsibility to provide all students with laptop or tablet computers in order to help them complete their schoolwork during the pandemic, up 12 percentage points from a year ago.

The shares of those who say so have increased for both major political parties over the past year: This view shifted 15 points for Republicans and those who lean toward the GOP, and there was a 9-point increase for Democrats and Democratic leaners.

However, when it comes to views of policy solutions for internet access more generally, not much has changed. Some 37% of Americans say that the government has a responsibility to ensure all Americans have high-speed internet access during the outbreak, and the overall share is unchanged from April 2020 – the first time Americans were asked this specific question about the government’s pandemic responsibility to provide internet access. 4

Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say the government has this responsibility, and within the Republican Party, those with lower incomes are more likely to say this than their counterparts earning more money. 

Video calls and conferencing have been part of everyday life

Americans’ own words provide insight into exactly how their lives changed amid COVID-19. When asked to describe the new or different ways they had used technology, some Americans mention video calls and conferencing facilitating a variety of virtual interactions – including attending events like weddings, family holidays and funerals or transforming where and how they worked. 5 From family calls, shopping for groceries and placing takeout orders online to having telehealth visits with medical professionals or participating in online learning activities, some aspects of life have been virtually transformed: 

“I’ve gone from not even knowing remote programs like Zoom even existed, to using them nearly every day.” – Man, 54

“[I’ve been] h andling … deaths of family and friends remotely, attending and sharing classical music concerts and recitals with other professionals, viewing [my] own church services and Bible classes, shopping. … Basically, [the internet has been] a lifeline.”  – Woman, 69

“I … use Zoom for church youth activities. [I] use Zoom for meetings. I order groceries and takeout food online. We arranged for a ‘digital reception’ for my daughter’s wedding as well as live streaming the event.” – Woman, 44

When asked about video calls specifically, half of Americans report they have talked with others in this way at least once a week since the beginning of the outbreak; one-in-five have used these platforms daily. But how often people have experienced this type of digital connectedness varies by age. For example, about a quarter of adults ages 18 to 49 (27%) say they have connected with others on video calls about once a day or more often, compared with 16% of those 50 to 64 and just 7% of those 65 and older. 

Even as video technology became a part of life for users, many  accounts of burnout  surfaced and some speculated that “Zoom fatigue” was setting in as Americans grew weary of this type of screen time. The survey finds that some 40% of those who participated in video calls since the beginning of the pandemic – a third of all Americans – say they feel worn out or fatigued often or sometimes from the time they spend on video calls. About three-quarters of those who have been on these calls several times a day in the pandemic say this.

Fatigue is not limited to frequent users, however: For example, about a third (34%) of those who have made video calls about once a week say they feel worn out at least sometimes.

These are among the main findings from the survey. Other key results include:

Some Americans’ personal lives and social relationships have changed during the pandemic:  Some 36% of Americans say their own personal lives changed in a major way as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Another 47% say their personal lives changed, but only a little bit.   About half (52%) of those who say major change has occurred in their personal lives due to the pandemic also say they have used tech in new ways, compared with about four-in-ten (38%) of those whose personal lives changed a little bit and roughly one-in-five (19%) of those who say their personal lives stayed about the same.

Even as tech helped some to stay connected, a quarter of Americans say they feel less close to close family members now compared with before the pandemic, and about four-in-ten (38%) say the same about friends they know well. Roughly half (53%) say this about casual acquaintances.

The majority of those who tried to sign up for vaccine appointments in the first part of the year went online to do so:  Despite early problems with  vaccine rollout  and  online registration systems , in the April survey tech problems did  not  appear to be major struggles for most adults who had tried to sign up online for COVID-19 vaccines. The survey explored Americans’ experiences getting these vaccine appointments and reveals that in April 57% of adults had tried to sign themselves up and 25% had tried to sign someone else up. Fully 78% of those who tried to sign themselves up and 87% of those who tried to sign others up were online registrants. 

When it comes to difficulties with the online vaccine signup process, 29% of those who had tried to sign up online – 13% of all Americans – say it was very or somewhat difficult to sign themselves up for vaccines at that time. Among five reasons for this that the survey asked about, the most common  major  reason was lack of available appointments, rather than tech-related problems. Adults 65 and older who tried to sign themselves up for the vaccine online were the most likely age group to experience at least some difficulty when they tried to get a vaccine appointment.

Tech struggles and usefulness alike vary by race and ethnicity.  Americans’ experiences also have varied across racial and ethnic groups. For example, Black Americans are more likely than White or Hispanic adults to meet the criteria for having “lower tech readiness.” 6 Among broadband users, Black and Hispanic adults were also more likely than White adults to be worried about paying their bills for their high-speed internet access at home as of April, though the share of Hispanic Americans who say this declined sharply since April 2020. And a majority of Black and Hispanic broadband users say they at least sometimes have experienced problems with their internet connection. 

Still, Black adults and Hispanic adults are more likely than White adults to say various technologies – text messages, voice calls, video calls, social media sites and email – have helped them a lot to stay connected with family and friends amid the pandemic.

Tech has helped some adults under 30 to connect with friends, but tech fatigue also set in for some.  Only about one-in-five adults ages 18 to 29 say they feel closer to friends they know well compared with before the pandemic. This share is twice as high as that among adults 50 and older. Adults under 30 are also more likely than any other age group to say social media sites have helped a lot in staying connected with family and friends (30% say so), and about four-in-ten of those ages 18 to 29 say this about video calls. 

Screen time affected some negatively, however. About six-in-ten adults under 30 (57%) who have ever made video calls in the pandemic say they at least sometimes feel worn out or fatigued from spending time on video calls, and about half (49%) of young adults say they have tried to cut back on time spent on the internet or their smartphone.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Question

The internet has transformed the way information is shared and consumed, but it has also created problems that did not exist before. What are the most serious problems associated with the internet and what solutions can you suggest?

IELTS Writing Task 2: Model Answer

There is no doubt that the internet has revolutionised communication and information-sharing in the same way that the telegraph and the television did before it. However, societies have had to cope with unanticipated new problems, including crimes which traditional laws are powerless to prevent. This essay will address some of the illegal acts enabled by the internet and propose solutions.

To begin with, the global scale of the internet means that national laws are no longer adequate to control what happens online. Take restrictions on legal reporting, for example. In some countries, the media is prohibited from revealing details of a defendant’s past in case this prejudices a fair trial. However, such restrictions are no longer enforceable now that information may be freely published in other countries and accessed by all. The only solution here, it seems, is to adopt global standards. Since the internet traverses national borders, the flow of information can only be controlled if all nations agree on what can and cannot be shared.

Another problem concerns anonymity, as internet users can easily conceal their identity and even impersonate others. Many crimes such as identity theft and child abuse result from the ease with which criminals can operate anonymously online. Some have proposed a system of online identification, similar to a passport, which would allow all internet users to be verified and traced. I believe this idea should be explored further, though there are clearly concerns about the security of those who use the internet to protest against oppressive regimes.

In conclusion, the only long-term solution to the problem of internet crime is greater international cooperation. Since the problem is global is scale, the solution must also be global. A new agency of the United Nations should be created to tackle the problems described here.

Task response: The model answer fully answers the question by stating two distinct problems caused by the internet together with relevant solutions to each problem. Each problem is illustrated with examples. The style is appropriate to academic writing and the answer is at least 250 words in length.

Coherence and cohesion: The introduction to this problem solution essay ends with a clear thesis statement. Each body paragraph deals with a different problem and its solution. Examples are signalled with logical connectives like  for example and such as . The conclusion contains a clear recommendation which follows from the body.

Lexical resource:  There are many instances of higher-level vocabulary such as prohibited , verified and oppressive . Examples of good collocation include prejudices a fair trial and tackle the problems . There are no spelling errors and correct word forms are used throughout.

With the possibility to access the internet straightforwardly by spending small-scale amounts of money, people broadly enhance their experiences of education. Firstly , thanks to the advancement of the internet, students and teachers are capable of doing research widely based on their purposes without limitation. In addition, due to the very bad situation of COVID-19 recently, the internet takes a significant role to lower the increase of the spreads and patience. To continue the learning process in this circumstance, both students and teachers must switch to online classes. Therefore , the internet and learning management systems such as google classroom or Microsoft team in conjunction with video conferences applications are required. Besides educational reasons, the internet has been utilized in a major part for entertainment activities for all ages of people. As an illustration, we watch movies or anime, play video games, access social media, and do many other things.

Although the internet comes along with numerous benefits, there are countless drawbacks as well. The majority of young people are addicted to the internet quickly. They access the internet only for online games and leisure activities. They spend hours every day doing nonsense actions. This affects the growth of learning journey. Furthermore, by absorbing a lot of things on social media, people start to compare themselves to others on the internet so that they will see the gap in society. Another bad point is that a large amount of information published online is unreal and unfavorable and we cannot analyze whether it is true or fake.

In short, using the internet in this era helps people to enrich their living environment due to the fact that they are able to obtain more and more valuable skills, resources and capacities. Yet, there are risks if the individuals use the internet without full comprehension of the dangers that may exist.

Hi, I have given IELTS 4 times and I need 7 each in academic. My latest score was: R 8.5 L 8 S 7.5 W 6.5 In all my attempts, I have not been able to get 7 in writing. Here is an example of an essay I wrote, could you please advise how I can improve? Besides a lot of advantages, some people believe that the Internet creates many problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? In today’s world, the Internet has become extremely popular. Some people believe, it is beneficial for several reasons while many argue that the disadvantages associated with it cannot be overlooked. I completely agree with the latter part. On one hand, some people believe that the Internet has been advantageous for many reasons. First of all, it helps communicate with people all over the world. The use of emails, social networking sites and video chatting has enables people to easily and quickly talk to their loved ones even from a far distance. Another benefit to be considered is that it is cheaper than sending mails via post. Furthermore, internet makes it convenient to pay the bills online and saves time as well, so people do not have to go personally to pay the bills. On the other hand, some people argue that the Internet has many disadvantages. For instance, the younger generation spends a lot of time in front of computer or on their phones which is harmful for their health as it affects their eyesight and also makes them physically inactive. In addition, inappropriate contents on the Internet like violence and obscenity negatively impacts on young people. Furthermore, the increasing number of cyber-crimes is taking place these days. More and more financial crimes are committed via the internet. Another problem the Internet creates is that overuse of it tends to make people isolated as they become unsociable and self-centred. In my opinion, the disadvantages of the Internet outweigh the advantages, hence, making it harmful to the growth of the youth. Therefore, its consumption should be reduced and people should be protected from the negative effects of internet.

	Who so ever is concerned, It is important to have habit of checking your answer after completion, otherwise no matter how good you have written, your mistakes will drain your marks and at the end you will be lingering with poor scores in writing.

Some people say that the Internet is making the world smaller by bringing people together. To what extent do you agree that the internet is making it easier for people to communicate with one another? It’s quite interesting and amusing at the same time, discussing this topic. If we remember back in the 80th, we still very much attached to conventional letter a.k.a postal mail. It took weeks even months before a single letter arrived at destination. But in the 90th, the way people communicate accelerated to profound degree. Internet not only allowed people to send and receive messages across countries in speed of light, but it also managed to cut the expensive cost which previously part of communication constraint. In present days, even home telephone devices are collecting dusk. Smartphone, tablet, laptop and notebooks had overtaken those “primeval” devices. People found that application like whatsapp, blackberry messenger, ease their way to interact with each others. In fact, text messaging took its turned to become obsolete. We also shouldn’t neglect the power of social media, which escalated as powerful tool for political communication. Obama, who once remarked this, had successfully gained followers to help him won the presidential election. But internet has several negative’ side as well. Instant Messenger, for instance, had been pointed out as scapegoat for making youngster became more “autistic” due to its nature in physical inactivity. When distance no longer an issue in interaction and having gadget in hand, it is all what it takes to start mingle with your peers. Not to mention, these days news related to social media’s crime scene had brought horror to certain people. It also pledged guilty as the predisposition factor for increasing numbers of infidelity and divorce among couple. So as the internet has brought a lot of advantages to human civilization and had triumphantly change the way we communicate, the cons inevitably followed as its consequences. Hi, It is a good start, but you will lose a huge point in task achievement point because you did not write about the disadvantages of the internet. Also, I think you need to add more a complex sentences and compound sentence. This website includes an excellent explanation of that. With an increasing population communicating via the internet and text messaging, face to face communication will become a thing of the past. To what extent do you agree? Recently, the survey by Pew Research Center's Global Attitude Project, has declared March 21 to May 15, 2015, that social networking is popular in many nations around the globe. In particular, cellphones and social media are owned by overwhelming large majority of people around the world. Also, survey has declared, text massaging is a global phenomenon-across the 21st countries. Undoubtedly, social networking is hurting human interaction. Initially, Pew Internet and American Life Project set up a study on uses of cellphones and Charing and results are not so much surprising because every juvenile is more likely prefer text messaging. Even though it may be convenient in many ways, like telling someone something very important when you don't want to talk him/her face to face. Lots of times, texting is being used so much that face-to-face communication is demolished. Even eye contact is gradually going away; people are becoming more and more avoidant and forbearing. This lack of body language eliminates sincerity in typical conversation. The reason is sarcasm and other moods and attitude are not as clear through text as it could be in regular conversation. Apart from this, texting or using internet are becoming an addiction. Many psychologists also believe that it is more than that a mental illness. Even so, constant texting jeopardize physical, emotional and cognitive health. Particularly, one of the disadvantages of using advanced communication systems is this, relationships, friendships, letter writing, sending occasional cards are ruined their importance by chatting. The skill of writing has vanished, even no occasional cards are sent so as no more love remained between two people. Quality time isn't the same anymore as it was, since everyone is on their own technology. Mostly, interaction is through internet or chatting, so when you wish to meet face-to-face is now weird. Eventually, percentage around the world a out using social networking is higher in U.S. 50% and in Israel 53%, but this critical condy reveals that this addiction besieged everyone in its web. And in result, this totally ruined human interaction. Also averted people from regular conversation and gossips. Now a days, Internet has been used in every field such as in education, hospital, business, companies, and so on. Internet has been a vast means of communication. I agree with the statement and I would like to give my opinion in the following paragraphs. There are many positive effects in the usage of internet. First of all, through internet one can be connected with the world easily and efficiently. Second, in the olden days, sending a letter to a person living in another area has been a very difficult situation because, it takes one or two days time to reach its destination, but now it has become very easy, if u send a mail to a person living in another area or country, it will reach in seconds to its destination. Finally, chatting can be done with the people around the world using whatsapp. One small message can be sent to number of people using internet. Now a days, social websites like facebook, twitter, has helped people to be connected with the people all around the world. Every simple doubt related to education, business and so on can be clarified using the internet. Besides the positive effects, there are some negative impacts in the usage of internet. First of all, misusing Internet is one of the main disadvantage. To illustrate, using the internet for hacking the mail id's, disturbing the social websites like facebook, twitter, by posting the bad things, and teasing the ladies by creating unknown accounts. Now a days, crimes are being done on the internet. Second, getting addicted to the internet is also one of the negative impact. To illustrate, people who do online jobs sitting at home needs some rest to their mind. In other words, refreshment should be given to their mind, if not their brains will be effected and many other problems will be a raising such as mental disorder, frustration towards the work and so on. With this intension people cannot enjoy their work. The suggestions to be given based on internet are, internet must be used for a purpose, but not for pass time. Social websites must be reduced because through these websites virus may attack and the systems or mobiles may be damaged. Therefore, I strongly support the statement but, the internet must be used to an extent. In conclusion, what have been discussed above are the pros and cons brought by the insertion of personal data. Since the development of the internet, we should protect our private data in every conceivable way.

Does internet use improve well-being? Study suggests it does for everyone except young women

A large study with data from over two million people looked for links between online activity and variables such as personal satisfaction, social relationships and daily motivation. some experts remain skeptical about the findings.

Daily use of the internet generates the same feeling of well-being as taking a walk in the park. So say Andrew Przybylski, a professor at the University of Oxford, and Matti Vuorre, from the University of Tilburg, after discovering that people with internet access were 8% more satisfied with their lives than those who did not have access to the internet. “The differences in happiness between people who go for a walk and those who don’t are of a magnitude similar to what we see at this very high level between people who go online and people who don’t,” says Vuorre. However, women between 15 and 24 years old who used the internet were less happy, according to a recent macro study published in the journal Nature.

It is the first sample to address internet access and well-being on a large scale: it analyzed internet access data for 2,414,294 people from 168 countries. “There are studies on that, but most have been small-scale in developed Western countries, usually English-speaking. This is a fairly new look,” says Matti Vuorre. Researchers took data from the Gallup GWP World Poll carried out by the analysis company Gallup, between 2006 and 2021. Respondents were asked if they had internet access at home, if they had internet access on their mobile phone and if they had used the internet in the last seven days, from a mobile phone, computer or other device.

For the study, the authors took into account eight indicators to assess “ well-being ”: life satisfaction, the degree of negative and positive experiences, social relationships, physical well-being, comfort in the place of residence and employee motivation. “We first queried the extent to which well-being varied as a function of internet connectivity. Then, we examined these associations’ robustness in a multiverse of 33,792 analysis specifications,” wrote the authors. “Of these, 84.9% resulted in positive and statistically significant associations between internet connectivity and well-being. These results indicate that internet access and use predict well-being positively and independently from a set of plausible alternatives.” The “multiverse” system repeatedly fitted a similar model to potentially different subgroups of the data using potentially different predictors, outcomes, and covariates in order to rule out that the associations between internet use and well-being were being caused by something else.

Cyberbullying and social media

The authors note that even though 84.9% of the associations were significantly positive, and only 0.4% were negative, “we did, however, observe a notable group of negative associations between internet use and community well-being. These negative associations were specific to young (15–24-year-old) women’s reports of community well-being.”

“Although not an identified causal relation, this finding is concordant with previous reports of increased cyberbullying and more negative associations between social media use and depressive symptoms,” adds the study, which calls for further analysis. For Andrea Vizcaíno Cuenca, a psychologist and CEO of the Spanish medical center Policlínica Maio who was not involved in the study, the problem lies in social media : “They encourage social comparison, especially among young women. Viewing carefully selected and edited images of others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Constant exposure to unrealistic beauty standards for women contributes to lower emotional well-being and a negative perception of the environment.”

To measure community well-being, respondents were asked if the city in which they lived was a perfect place or if in the last 12 months they had done something to improve the area in which they lived. Girls who used the internet confessed to being less happy with the place where they lived, according to the study. Przybylski says it could be because people who don’t feel welcome in their community spend more time online.

Cyberbullying is a serious problem that “disproportionately” affects young women, says Vizcaíno: in Spain, 3% of 15-year-old girls claim to have suffered bullying at school at least two or three times a month, according to a report from the World Health Organization (WHO). Its effects can be “devastating” for mental health, such as increased levels of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. “They can directly contribute to a negative perception of community well-being, as experiences of bullying can cause victims to feel isolated and disconnected from their community,” adds Vizcaíno. One in six adolescents suffers from cyberbullying, representing an increase from 13% to 16% among girls and 12% to 15% among boys since 2023, according to the WHO. The study calls for future research to look at whether low community well-being drives engagement with the internet or vice versa.

From internet to cinema

Although the debate between technology and well-being continues, it now seems unthinkable to live without the internet . Not everything is harmful in cyberspace and that is what the study tries to explain. Rebeca Cordero, a professor of applied sociology at the European University of Madrid, reflects on this: “We have to escape from that negative vision that the internet is something bad or harmful . A well-used tool can generate well-being.” Digital disconnection can even decrease life satisfaction, as explained in another study in November of last year. Social media offers powerful social rewards, and restricting it can reduce positive emotions.

Despite this, experts such as the health psychologist José Antonio Tamayo do not agree with the findings of the study. Tamayo underscores that the GWP Global Survey is not a psychometrically validated instrument, and that the questions are based on a definition of “well-being” unique to GWP. Additionally, respondents’ responses present risks of recall bias, social desirability or conformity, he explains. “When we talk about well-being it is a personal perception, what we do is study perceptions. I may have the feeling that what I am exposed to generates my well-being, but in reality it does not.” Tamayo also does not rule out that other factors intervene between internet use and well-being, such as income level. The study does take economic differences into account, even though “data and model selection were limited.”

New research shows that improving mobile internet service can reduce digital inequality

New research shows removing data caps to cell phone usage may not only reduce digital inequality but might increase education data consumption by disadvantaged populations.

More than 90% of the U.S. population has internet access. However, many households , particularly those of low socioeconomic status, are "smartphone-dependent," meaning they rely purely on their smartphone for internet access. As a result, their connection may be unstable or slow, and they may be constrained by data caps that limit how much they can use the internet.

This puts them at a disadvantage compared to households with internet access through smartphones and other broadband connections at home and work, perpetuating digital inequality between disadvantaged and advantaged households.

The smartphone dependence of many disadvantaged households begs the question: If mobile internet service was better—e.g., if it was faster, more reliable, and/or didn't come with data constraints—could that reduce digital inequality and level the playing field? Researchers from the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business and Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business studied this question and found the answer is "yes."

The research paper is forthcoming in Management Science and is available on the SSRN site.

Karthik Kannan, assistant professor of IT and Operations Management at the Cox School of Business and Georgia Tech Ph.D. graduate, led the project. "I was interested in the effect of data caps. For example, when you have 10GB of data per month and use more, you are charged extra, or your connection is throttled," said Kannan.

"So, I partnered with a large telecommunications provider to study what happens when their subscribers switched from capped to unlimited data plans. I was particularly interested in differences between high-income and low-income households."

Kannan, along with Eric Overby, Catherine and Edwin Wahlen Professor of Information Technology Management, and Sri Narasimhan, Gregory J. Owens Professor of Information Technology Management, at the Scheller College of Business, found that while all households increased their data use after switching to an unlimited plan, the increase was significantly larger for families of low socioeconomic status .

"That was our initial finding: that improving mobile internet service by removing the data cap had disproportionately large benefits for disadvantaged households," said Overby. "But that didn't mean much in and of itself. If those households weren't using the additional data for 'enriching' purposes like accessing educational, health care , or career-related data, the additional data consumption wouldn't translate into positive social benefits.

"Indeed, years of research on digital inequality have consistently shown a 'usage gap' in which advantaged households take fuller advantage of internet access improvements than disadvantaged households. The result is that internet improvements often exacerbate inequality. So, we dug deeper."

Specifically, the researchers leveraged the telecommunication provider's data categorization system to study changes in the consumption of educational data. They found that disadvantaged households experienced disproportionate increases in education data consumption (as well as in overall data consumption) after switching to unlimited mobile data.

Although advantaged households increased their education data consumption by approximately 15MB (or about three digital textbooks) per month after switching to unlimited data, disadvantaged households increased their education data consumption by approximately 24MB (or about five digital textbooks) per month.

"We can't be sure that these disproportionate increases in education data consumption will help disadvantaged households narrow gaps in educational outcomes. However, this is clearly a step in the right direction," said Kannan.

The research is directly relevant to the Federal Communications Commission's 2023 inquiry into the effects of data caps on disadvantaged households. Narasimhan explains, "Let's say that based on their inquiry, the FCC decides to limit the use of data caps. A logical question is: will that do any good? In other words, will disadvantaged households take advantage of their improved mobile internet service in a way that can reduce digital inequality? Prior to our research, we didn't really know. But based on our research, the answer is yes."

Banned Twitch streamer Dr Disrespect says he sent 'inappropriate' messages to minor

Dr Disrespect, formerly one of Twitch’s biggest streamers, has broken his silence about his mysterious ban from the platform four years ago, writing that he had sent “inappropriate” messages to a minor.

The streamer, whose real name is Herschel “Guy” Beahm, had more than 4 million followers on Twitch before his channel was abruptly removed in 2020 without a public explanation — right in the midst of his lucrative two-year exclusivity deal with the platform.

In a lengthy statement Tuesday on X, Beahm confirmed that in 2017, he had conversations with a minor “that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate.”

“Were there twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not,” he wrote. Twitch’s “whisper” function was the platform’s private messaging system.

Beahm added, “Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual.” He further emphasized that he has never been criminally charged.

He said he went through a lengthy arbitration process with Twitch about the ban before the civil dispute was resolved in a settlement. Twitch has not commented publicly on the issue, and it did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A representative for Beahm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Attention around Beahm’s ban began Friday, when former Twitch employee Cody Conners, who worked on the company’s strategic partnerships team until last year, shared an explosive post on X on Friday that appeared to refer to Beahm, although it did not explicitly name him.

“He got banned because got caught sexting a minor in the then existing Twitch whispers product. He was trying to meet up with her at TwitchCon. The powers that be could read in plain text,” he wrote. “Case closed, gang.”

Shortly after Conners’ post went viral, Beahm appeared to deny the allegations, posting on X : “I didn’t do anything wrong, all this has been probed and settled, nothing illegal, no wrongdoing was found, and I was paid.” He clarified in an earlier post that Twitch had paid out his whole contract despite the ban.

Since his Twitch ban in 2020, Beahm has continued streaming on YouTube to his 4.7 million followers and has partnered with major brands, including Mountain Dew and the NFL. 

After Conners went public, The Verge published a report citing an anonymous second former Twitch employee who confirmed Conners’ allegations.

By Monday afternoon, Midnight Society — the game studio Beahm co-founded in 2021 — announced that it has ended its relationship with Beahm.

Robert Bowling, another co-founder of Midnight Society, wrote in a statement online after Beahm’s statement Tuesday: “If you inappropriately message a minor. I can not work with you. Period. I promised to only act on facts, and I did.”

On Tuesday, about an hour before Beahm published his statement, Bloomberg quoted three unnamed sources citing three unnamed sources who it said also confirmed Conners’ claims. Two of the sources said Beahm had asked the minor about her plans at TwitchCon, an annual convention for streamers and fans, according to the report.

In his social media statement, Beahm said that the studio’s decision to cut ties was a collective one and that he did not want to “jeopardize the culture we have carefully crafted.” He also wrote that he accepts responsibility for his actions in 2017.

“I should have never entertained these conversations to begin with. That’s on me. That’s on me as an adult, a husband and a father. It should have never happened. I get it. I’m not perfect and I’ll f---ing own my s---. This was stupid,” he wrote. “Now, with all this said, don’t get it f---ing mistaken, I’ve seen all the remarks and labels being throw around so loosely. Social media is a destruction zone. I’m no f---ing predator or pedophile.”

Beahm ended his statement on a defiant note, saying he plans to continue making content regardless of potential backlash.

“If you’re uncomfortable with this entire statement and think I’m a piece of s---, that’s fine. But I’m not f---ing going anywhere. I’m not the same guy that made this mistake all those years ago,” he wrote, adding that he’ll soon be taking an extended vacation with his family. “They want me to disappear... yeah f---ing right.”

The internet’s memory is under threat

MTV News was once a go-to source for information not just about the music scene (yes kids, Music Television once focused on music) but also politics and other cultural subjects. But its moment passed, and last year MTV closed it down. And, as of yesterday, the MTV News website is also gone, taking with it the vast archive of content created between 1996 and 2013.

As Variety reports , social media is ablaze with former MTV News staffers who are outraged at their work disappearing. “Decades of music history gone,” lamented former entertainment director Crystal Bell. “Eight years of my life are gone without a trace. All because it didn’t fit some executives’ bottom lines,” wrote former music editor Patrick Hosken. (The executives in question would be at MTV owner Paramount Global, which hasn’t commented on the archive’s removal.)

It’s not unusual for an online journalist to see their old work disappear. I’ve certainly experienced this many times, either because the publication I wrote for went bust (Gigaom) or because it went through major changes that broke many of its old links (ZDNet). It’s always frustrating, and it must be particularly painful when the content’s current owner easily has the resources to keep it online indefinitely.

Thank goodness, then, for the Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine , which makes a valiant effort to preserve online content for posterity. One example that’s meaningful to me: I’m still darn proud of a Gigaom article I wrote in mid-2013, when the very first of Edward Snowden’s revelations about U.S. online surveillance came out, and I correctly predicted that the privacy implications would become a nightmare for U.S. tech firms serving European customers—thankfully, the piece survives in the Wayback Machine. Unfortunately, most older MTV News articles do not , but some do, and some is better than none.

However, even the survival of the Internet Archive is no sure thing. The nonprofit digital library has in recent years become the target of lawsuits by copyright holders, who are outraged at the works they own being made available without their permission.

The most urgent case involves the Archive’s digital lending program, through which people can borrow digital versions of books, much like they would do in a physical library. The Archive contains many old, out-of-print books that it has digitized and gives out freely, but it also buys and lends out more current books, as libraries tend to do.

The Archive usually lends out each copy of a copyrighted book to one person at a time, but it opened a short-lived “National Emergency Library” in the early days of the COVID pandemic, allowing multiple people to borrow a single copy simultaneously. The biggest publishing groups—Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House and Wiley— sued in 2020, accusing the Archive of “mass copyright infringement,” and last year they won in a lower court, leading to some 500,000 of the plaintiffs’ books being removed from the Internet Archive’s library. Over 1,300 are books that have been banned or challenged in some places, making it very difficult for people to otherwise access them.

The Archive launched an appeal, which will finally be heard this coming Friday. Founder Brewster Kahle is pitching this as a fight for the future of libraries and democracy itself, arguing that “we need secure access to the historical record.”

But that isn’t the only legal challenge the Archive is having to deal with. Last year, Sony and other music majors sued over the Archive’s repository of digitized versions of crackly old vinyl records that had been donated to it. The labels want damages totaling $372 million. If they get their way, Kahle warned in a CBS interview on Sunday, that could put an end to the entire Internet Archive.

This would be truly disastrous. The online world may frequently seem ephemeral, but it’s a huge part of how we interact with and understand the “real” world. With print now relegated to the sidelines, and with the media business being as volatile as it is, future historians without a Wayback Machine may one day find themselves with few original sources to analyze—just the mangled recollections of AI models that were once trained on content that turned out to be all too fragile.

Internet, mobile outages affect businesses in outback Queensland town of Tambo

Residents of a small Queensland town say telecommunications are so poor that phone calls, the internet, EFTPOS and cash machine withdrawals stop for days at a time. 

Tambo pub owner Ben Casey said it was getting progressively worse.

"In the last two to three months we had six weeks of no ADSL landline internet, we had two weeks of no landline phones and we've had more than four times where the mobiles have gone out for almost 24 hours," he said.

He said the town's businesses, residents and tourists had become used to frequent mobile and internet outages.

But in a town of 300 people that relied on tourism to survive, businesses said the outages often left travellers unable to call for accommodation and pay electronically for goods.

Rebecca Hendel, a mum of four children under six, said the outages left her feeling fearful.

She said she worked night shifts at Mr Casey's pub.

"When Telstra goes down, my husband can't contact me," Ms Hendel said.

"It stresses me out a lot."

From copper wires to low orbit satellites and a looming 3G shutdown, the patchwork of old and new technology has left some regional Australian towns falling through the gaps.

It was not just Tambo, the issues have been felt in many communities across regional Australia .

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council Mayor Andrew Martin said the number of outages was "disturbing."

"If it happened in the middle of Brisbane there'd be a national disaster declared," he said.

Some people have opted for alternative connectivity choices but many people haven't been aware of their options .

Mr Casey recently switched from ADSL to Starlink. 

He said it had been a saving grace for the pub but doubled his bill.

Who is responsible?

Telstra has advised some customers to improve their mobile coverage by using an NBN or other broadband connection to access Wi-Fi calling.

"We also encourage business owners talk to their bank about connecting their EFTPOS terminals to their NBN or Wi-Fi connection," Telstra regional general manager May Boisen said.

The Regional Tech Hub was created in 2020 as an independent service funded by the federal government to help people in regional and rural Australia navigate their options.

General manager Jennifer Medway said the hub received hundreds of calls a week, with many affected consumers asking "who is responsible?"

"Most people, if they're talking electricity, just want to flip the switch on and away they go. In telecommunications and particularly the internet that isn't the case," she said.

3G shutdown issues

Ms Medway said many callers to the hub reported decreased mobile signal or outages as the 3G shutdown neared .

"While they're working all that out we are hearing a lot of people are experiencing challenges," Ms Medway said. 

A Telstra spokesperson said upgrading and replacing key equipment required turning off base stations for a couple of days.

"That work has been happening across Australia over the last few years and we are on track to have all our mobile base stations finished before we close our 3G network," they said.

What are the options? 

Ms Medway said people needed to arm themselves with information.

"Waiting for government or others to come and resolve some of these problems is unrealistic," she said.

"If you are sitting there and you're having frequent outages or don't have service that fits your lifestyle or business … there are options."

For internet connections they include different satellite options, a fixed NBN wireless network, a non-NBN fixed wireless, or an older ADSL type of broadband.

The head of NBN Local Queensland, Kylie Lindsay, said the amount of choice could be overwhelming.

"What people need to do is educate themselves, they need to look at what their needs are and how they rely on the internet," she said.

I Saw My Anxiety Reflected in ‘Inside Out 2.’ It Floored Me.

In a way that’s both cathartic and devastating, Pixar’s latest portrays how anxiety can take hold, our critic writes.

At the climax of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Riley, a freshly pubescent teen with a gaggle of new personified emotions, becomes so overwhelmed with anxiety that she has a panic attack.

In the theater, I whispered to my friend that I’d forgotten to bring my panic attack medication. I’d said it as a joke — but at the sight of this anxious animated teenager, my whole body’s choreography changed. My muscles tensed. I pressed my right palm down hard to my chest and took a few deep yoga breaths, trying to cut off the familiar beginnings of an attack.

This depiction of how quickly anxiety can take hold was overwhelming. I saw my own experiences reflected in Riley’s. “Inside Out 2” felt personal to me in a way that was equally cathartic and devastating: It’s a movie that so intimately understands how my anxiety disorder upends my everyday life.

“Inside Out 2” picks up two years after the 2015 film “Inside Out,” as Riley is about to start high school. With puberty comes a group of new emotions, led by Anxiety. A manic orange sprite voiced by Maya Hawke, Anxiety bumps out the old emotions and inadvertently wreaks havoc on Riley’s belief system and self-esteem as she tries to manage the stress of a weekend hockey camp.

When an emotion takes over in the “Inside Out” movies, a control board in Riley’s mind changes to that feeling’s color; Anxiety’s takeover, however, is more absolute. She creates a stronghold in Riley’s imagination, where she forces mind workers to illustrate negative hypothetical scenarios for Riley’s future. Soon, Riley’s chief inner belief is of her inadequacy; the emotions hear “I’m not good enough” as a low, rumbling refrain in her mind.

I’m familiar with anxiety’s hold on the imagination; my mind is always writing the script to the next worst day of my life. It’s already embraced all possibilities of failure. And my anxiety’s ruthless demands for perfection often turn my thoughts into an unrelenting roll-call of self-criticisms and insecurities.
