Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar gets up, close and personal with his superstardom in this mass entertainer

Selfiee review: if you are fine with akshay kumar continuing to do hindi remakes of films from the south, you would definitely enjoy selfiee..

Not very long ago we saw Ayushmann Khurrana play a superstar in An Action Hero , where an upcoming youth icon wanting to take a selfie with the actor ends up dead, and his brother lectures the superstar that all he is is because of public, so if they want a selfie, actors need to oblige. Cut to Akshay Kumar 's latest theatrical release Selfiee, where the actor plays a superstar and ends up in a murky mess of sorts with his biggest fan. All this fan desired for was a seflie with his idol, but things take an ugly turn when media gets involved and it becomes a battle of egos and an ultimate fight between a superstar vs his fan.

Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar in a still from the film.

An official remake of Malayalam film Driving Licence, this Akshay-starrer dramedy is not a frame by frame copy of the original (I've seen the Malayalam one in bit and parts) and has many lighter moments. Other than the basic storyline, Selfiee has ditched the serious undertones of the original and laced the writing with a lot of humour.

The story follows superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay) who wants a driving licence urgently to be able to finish the climax of his film and save the producer from incurring losses. His diehard fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is given the task to help the actor, and he agrees to fulfil it without following the usual tedious process and asks for a selfie as a gesture in return. But things don't go as planned and a misunderstanding leads to their feud becoming prime time news, while public has a field day with their juicy fight.

I have somehow always enjoyed watching actors portray superstars onscreen; it's kind of watching a film within a film, so double the fun at the cost of one. And this is seemingly becoming a tried and tested formula for filmmakers. Remember when Om Kapoor, played by Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Shanti Om, became everyone's favourite, or when Vidya Balan brought to life the superstardom of Silk Smitha or even Kangana Ranaut's portrayal of Jayalalithaa during her best days as a superstar -- all these tried to bring to fore various aspects of a star's life and their connection with the common man, too.

With Selfiee, things look more real and relatable because of the story and narrative which is not too far-fetched and is pretty convincing. Selfiee doesn't end at being a feud between a star and an RTO officer, but also covers their emotional side of being a husband, a father and balancing it all with their respective jobs. The screenplay is engaging and doesn't let you have too many dull moments. The original story by Sachy has been written for the Hindi version by Rishabh Sharma and he tweaks it a bit to suit the Hindi audience's palette.

Emraan Hashmi in a still from Selfiee.

Akshay as Vijay gets as close as you could imagine to the superstardom he enjoys in real life. Bearing a charming persona and swag, he shows signs of gratitude for his fans despite being a self-made star. What I loved about Selfiee and which perhaps remains the highlight of the film for me, is Akshay's tendency to be able to take a joke on himself and laugh at it, too. Be it taking a dig at the constant scrutiny on the number of films he does in a year, Hindi films not working not working at the box office of late or a doctor telling him that he needs to do some 'classy films over massy cinema', or even his infamous smile showing his gums , he delivers all of these with so much ease.

It was after over a year that we saw Emraan Hashmi back on the big screen, and he has a pleasant screen presence though at places, he seemed a bit loud and over-the-top. But, maybe that's how some diehard fans of superstars are. That they can't control their emotions on seeing or meeting their 'gods'. In face-off scenes with Akshay, it's commendable to see how Emraan manages to hold his ground.

Among the supporting cast, Mahesh Thakur as Vijay's manager delivers an earnest performance, Meghna Malik as politico Vimla Tiwari is on-point with her comic timing and is given some funny lines. Abhimanyu Singh as Vijay's contemporary is comic relief and hilarious in scenes, but for someone with his acting calibre, he is completely wasted in the script. And so is Paritosh Tripathi and Kusha Kapila, who appear and disappear as per convenience.

And the ladies are once again neglected or have very little to do in the film. Nushrratt Bharuccha as Om Prakash's wife is caring but has a quirky side to her. And even though she doesn't approve of her husband's obsession with a star, she doesn't mind flexing in the front of whole colony when the husband is enjoying his 2 minutes of fame on news channels on TV. Diana Penty as Vijay's wife exists in the script only because there needed to be an emotional arch to the script and that the superstar can use that track to deliver an emotional speech in the climax. Other than that, Diana doesn't really get much scope to perform or showing her acting chops. Even her scenes with Akshay aren't anything great or something that will make you sit and take notice of their chemistry.

Talking of chemistry, I rather liked the song Kudiyee Ni Teri Vibe where Akshay grooves with Mrunal Thakur and the two set the screen on fire. Even the remixed version of Main Khiladi Tu Anari that comes in the end credit is a sure shot party number and not to be missed. In a nutshell, Selfiee ticks most of the boxes that Hindi film audiences look for. So, if you are fine with Akshay Kumar continuing to do Hindi remakes of films from the South, you would definitely enjoy Selfiee, even if you have seen the original Malayalam film. After all, isn't this what everyone is craving for - mass entertainers that can bring audiences back into theatres.

‘Selfiee’ movie review: A captivating script drives this thrilling Akshay Kumar-starrer

Akshay kumar channels the swag of the superstar and imbues it with his inherent simplicity to make his character, vijay kumar, absolutely relatable.

A high-pitched, fast-paced mass entertainer that doesn’t give up on the discerning audience,  Selfiee  once again proves that there is no bigger star than a coherent script. A remake of the Malayalam hit  Driving Licence,  writer Sachy’s story finds a new life in Bhopal where an ordinary motor vehicle inspector at the Regional Transport Office takes on a superstar after circumstances choose to play truant.

When superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) lands in Bhopal for a film shoot, he finds he needs a new driving licence quickly. Om Prakash Agrawal (Emraan Hashmi), the motor vehicle inspector in charge of his application, is his fan but a misunderstanding caused by a couple of self-seeking characters leads to a public showdown between them.

Prima facie, it seems like a case of much ado about nothing, an overreaction but as Selfiee  unfolds it provides an interesting insight into human nature. Vijay comes across as arrogant and Om looks petty but neither of them is the villain of the piece. It is just the well-laid-out quirks of fate that makes things spiral into a riveting face-off between David and Goliath. As self-esteem and small-mindedness play out against each other, sparks fly. Director Raj Mehta and writer Rishabh Sharma ensure that the essence of the story is not lost in translation while localising the drama and humour. Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography seamlessly captures the larger-than-life appeal of a star and the ordinariness of the fan and Ritesh Soni’s scissors don’t leave any superfluous stuff hanging.

Selfiee (Hindi)

It reminds me of  An Action Hero  in not being just about an ordinary fan threatening to take down the fandom of a superstar but  Selfiee,  riding on Akshay’s image, navigates the moral dilemmas and intrinsic logic in a better way. The film moves like a car in an H test that Vijay undertakes to get the licence, touching upon multiple contours of society without crossing the line. From the bureaucracy’s knack to nitpick when it decides to be on your wrong side to the media’s urge to sensationalise minor issues for ratings,  Selfiee  shows us the mirror multiple times. The internal politics of Bollywood and the dangers of unchecked hero worship also flow into the well-oiled screenplay that doesn’t take a breath to preach or ponder. The film addresses the dangers of following a Pied Piper as well as shows the Piper the fleetingness of fame in times of provocative hashtags.

Akshay channels the swag of the superstar and imbues it with his inherent simplicity to make Vijay Kumar absolutely relatable. As the opening song with a ravishing Mrunal Thakur says, he generates the right vibe for the subject. The inside jokes on his punctuality, the image of a family man, and his ability to handle multiple projects at one-time land well. For once, he is challenged with a slightly flawed character and he doesn’t disappoint. In Emraan, he has a potent counterpoint. The actor always gets the vulnerabilities and the inferiority complex of the common man right and here again he excels in the role of a father who is blighted by a star in the presence of his son.

The talented support cast adds to the fun. Meghna Malik is an absolute hoot in the role of a local politician desperate to use star power to push her career. Nushratt Bharuccha displays the excitement of a middle-class wife in the right measure. Cast against type, Abhimanyu Singh exudes the frustration of an aging actor in a fun way.

The depiction of the media circus gets a bit over the top and repetitive and doesn’t match the tonality of the rest of the film. Also, Akshay’s short address before the opening credits on the importance of fans is uncalled for and fills us with a sense that the star is either pleading for a hit or undermining the intellect of his followers.

Selfiee is currently running in theatres.

Selfiee Review:

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Breezy, feel-good movie

Director Raj Mehta, who reunites with Akshay after Good Newwz, handles the movie’s first half adeptly, keeps it entertaining and breezy, and peppers it with hilarious one-liners that the actor delivers effortlessly. However, the second half, which centers around the face-off between the two heroes, is not as high on humour

Selfiee takes a slow opening at the BO

While the final figures are yet to come in, the first day collections of the film can be expected to be less than Rs. 5 crores. Infact, as per trade website, boxofficeindia.com, the numbers are quite shocking for an Akshay Kumar film as none of his films have opened so poorly, and that incluides 'Tasveer 8 x 10'. The reason why some audiences have flocked to the theatres to watch the film today is because of Akshay Kumar

Selfiee Movie REVIEW:

We have seen movies on the common man vs politicians, and the common man vs nation. We have also seen the movie on common man vs superstar, for example, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan. It is a done-and-dusted movie and yet, Selfiee has a unique style and charm that can impress the audience. The one-word review for the movie would be entertaining. Selfiee is about a superstar and a die-hard fan who lock horns with each other for a selfie. The film showcases how a fan who loves and idolise his superstar tries to bring his superstar down after a series of misunderstandings.

It showcases the epic face-off between the star and a fan is hell entertaining. Interestingly, since you know both the sides of the story, you actually start rooting for both Vijay Kumar and Om Prakash Agarwal. Well, that’s how the story grabs your attention despite rolling out a predictable story. It is quite evident that what is going to happen next; however, Raj Mehta makes the face-off so interesting that you forget about the other aspects.

Considering that it is a Raj Mehta directorial venture featuring Akshay Kumar, we saw the right amount of humour that will surely tickle your funny bone. For really psyched me was to see full masala movie that too coming from Mehta who is often seen making family dramas. From exhibiting Akshay’s larger-than-life superstar character to the epic face-off, Selfiee is indeed an entertaining watch.

Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar needs to obtain a new driving license from the RTO officer, Om Prakash Agarwal, a diehard fan of Vijay. But a series of misunderstandings lead to a war of words between the two, eventually escalating into a feud which is played out in front of the media and the entire country. Does Vijay get his driver’s licence? Will the face-off between the star and the fan resolve?

Star Performances:

Akshay Kumar is the star of the film for sure. He essays the role of a superstar Vijay Kumar and trust me, he lives like his real-life character in the movie with a few changes and that’s the best part about his character. In the movie, Vijay says that he has no time for anything as he has to make 5-6 movies and 2 OTTs and several brand endorsements and that’s exactly what Akshay Kumar is known for. It is quite funny to keep that aspect in his character which is also giving it back to the trolls who have been criticising him for doing so many films.

I liked how Raj Mehta kept his character genuine and subtle instead of going all loud and berserk as he is a superstar. Akshay doesn’t just play his part but lives it like a genuine superstar. I loved how his character was not loud and unreasonable as he plays a superstar. Raj Mehta kept the raw and real side of him and that’s when you feel the connection. You will feel like hooting at every Akshay Kumar style, his unique walk, his swag and his charm.

Emraan Hashmi essays the role of RTO officer Om Prakash Agarwal who is a die-hard fan of superstar Vijay Kumar. Emraan impresses me with his performance in the movie. From being vulnerable and hopeless to being a stern and sharp officer, Emraan does a fab job of bringing out the cunning and innocent side of the character.

On the other hand, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty have given a reasonable performance in their limited screentime. They are not shown much in the movie and have nothing significant to offer but they do demand attention.

Direction/Screenplay:

Raj Mehta, director of Selfiee, seemed to have tried his hands at making a full masala entertainer and must say, it turned out to be quite good. Looking at his previous films, Good Newwz and JuggJug Jeeyo, we got a light-hearted family entertainer; however, when it comes to Selfiee, it seems like Raj Mehta also tried his hands on giving the audience a full-blown commercial movie. From using slow-motion shots, larger than life songs to swag-loaded actions, Raj went out and about with Selfiee which was quite eye-grabbing for me. Considering that I have not seen such things before, it was surely an entertaining watch.

Drawbacks :

First and foremost, Selfiee gives a predictable story, you just know what’s going to happen next or who did what. There are quite a few scenes that were a letdown, thus, making the movie a little unreal and too made up. Yes, Bollywood films are to be enjoyed more than finding logic in them; however, some were too far from being realistic. Since when media are allowed in the RTO office? Since when school children are made to watch TV during school hours? How come there was no action taken on people who raised a hand to the public servant that is the police officer? A fight for a simple license seems like an over dramatic but it is an entertaining watch.

Speaking about the story, yes, it can get a little over-the-top or overtly dramatic but it will surely leave you with a happy smile. Yes, the concept of a superstar vs a common man is and dusted formula but the execution and storyline surely bring freshness to the script. Raj Mehta’s sole reason was always giving the audience a light-hearted movie that stays with you forever and Selfiee is no exception.

Conclusion :

Overall, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi starrer Selfiee is genuinely an entertaining watch with a few hits and misses. Even though it gets a little predictable from the start, you will still enjoy it. Watch it for the smashing performances by Akshay and Emraan as well as for Raj Mehta’s direction which will surely leave you starstruck.

At this point, it is safe to say that most in the audience are done with remakes. It has been a continuing season of remaking not just some super hit regional films, but Bollywood is now buying rights of foreign language films as well. Most times, the attempt goes futile as seldom do remakes manage to match up to the original.

Just last week, Kartik Aaryan hit the screens with his film Shehzada, the remake of Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo and the disappointment was just as massive as the hype the film had generated. Now, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi have teamed up for the remake of the Malayalam film, Driving Licence. Titled Selfiee, this one has actually managed to capture the essence of the original and is one that can be termed a ‘good remake’.

Much of the credit actually goes to Raj Mehta, who was able to take the original and mould it perfectly to suit the sensibilities of the Hindi film audience. What’s even better is that the director, who had collaborated with Akshay in Good Newwz, has been able to tap into his comic timings and make Vijay Kumar a shadow of how Akshay Kumar is. So, you see a character who is just like how fans see Khiladi Kumar to be and who is not afraid to take a few jibes at himself as well. So you have his wife, played by Diana Penty, making fun of the star’s ‘masoode wali smile’ and you will not be able to hold back the laugh and marvel at Kumar’s ability to take a joke on himself at the same time.

What makes the film better is the fact that he has an equally good opponent in Emraan Hashmi. Hashmi is spontaneous as the cop in the Road Transport Office, Om Agarwal, who has to get Kumar’s license done urgently. He requests for a selfie with the star at the office because he is a huge fan. The superstar, who feels Agarwal is a genuine fan, goes to meet him. But things go horribly wrong as the media turns up and things are blown out of proportion. What ensues is the two coming at loggerheads with one another. But who will win in this clash?

Watch the trailer here :

The film takes multiple turns. Is this a story of a common man trying to avenge an attack on his family? Is this about the misuse of power? Is this about how politics and the media play out and sensationalises otherwise simple things? Is this about the fallacy of human behaviour that stretches things that can easily be resolved? Is this about clash of egos? Well, it is about all of that combined. The makers carefully add comic relief throughout the film. Scenes, especially involving Akshay Kumar and his interaction with Meghna Malik invoke genuine laughs. Abhimanyu Singh also adds the perfect tadka to this concoction.

There is not much that the female leads have to do. We have Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty. While the former is shown as a homemaker who is shown in the most stereotypical way exaggerating about her husband's achievements, Diana's character is shown as more stronger as independent.

The mob sequence is what I feel could have been dealt with better. Without divulging too much, it is a sequence where a strong message of not losing one’s mind while being a fan could have been given. Was this muted to appease fans? We don’t know. But the scene could definitely have been better written.

The editing is crisp. The background music is on point and the film is enjoyable. The fact that Selfiee has taken the good parts from Driving Licence and given it a touch of its own is what makes this remake a good watch as well. If you are looking for a fun watch this weekend, you have one!

Selfiee Review In Hindi: कैसी है अक्षय कुमार और इमरान हाशमी की सेल्फी? टिकट लेने से पहले सेल्फी मूवी रिव्यू पड़ने में भलाई है

Selfiee Review In Hindi: कैसी है अक्षय कुमार और इमरान हाशमी की सेल्फी? टिकट लेने से पहले सेल्फी मूवी रिव्यू पड़ने में भलाई है

Selfiee Film Review In Hindi:

Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar Was Almost There With The Self-Deprecatory Humour But…

Just hear me out.

selfie movie review in hindi

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Mahesh Thakur, Abhimanyu Singh, Meghna Malik, Kusha Kapila

Director: Raj Mehta

Selfiee Movie Review:

What’s Good: The typical Akshay Kumar trademark comedy in some scenes

What’s Bad: The typical ‘tweaking’ in copy-pasting the already tried & tested script making certain things worse than the original

Loo Break: Songs & whenever you need to!

Watch or Not?: Only if you haven’t seen the original (Driving License) you’ll have a bright chance to enjoy some scenes

Language: Hindi

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 143 Minutes (Yep, that number ironically denotes ‘I Love You’ but sorry, this is going to be ‘ek-tarfa pyaar’)

Before the movie started, we all saw Akshay Kumar’s recorded message about how this is dedicated to his fans and how he’s nothing without them, but then he goes on to do films like these to disappoint not all but a considerable chunk of them. He plays Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar), a superstar who is worshipped by his fans and one his biggest fans in RTO Inspector Om Prakash Agarwal’s (Emraan Hashmi) love for him is dubiously termed as ‘bhakti’.

Star wants a driving license for a car-based scene shoot, RTO officer wants a harmless selfie with his favourite star but things change when Vijay reaches the RTO office. Who has done what and why forms the major crux of the film which revolves around a cat-and-mouse game being played by the ‘Khiladi’ & ‘Anari’.

Selfiee Movie Review:

Selfiee Movie Review: Script Analysis

Mehta’s trusted writer Rishhabh Sharrma ( Good Newwz , Jugjugg Jeeyo) adapts & modifies the screenplay of Lal Jr’s Malayalam film Driving License led by Prithviraj Sukumaran for Akshay Kumar’s Hindi remake. Okay, this may sound insane, but, hear me out. The comical relief of the film comes also from Akki cracking self-deprecated jokes, why didn’t they take it a step ahead? When you can talk about his ‘masoode’ ruining his smile, joke about his commitment to do millions of projects every year, and make a doctor criticize his ‘massy’ script sense, then why did you restrict the story only to the source material available beforehand?

Why this can’t be a story of a story who somehow forgets to renew his passport & fails with extreme difficulty in renewing it owing to his dual citizenship (India & Canada, maybe?)? Why not completely redesign the project retaining just the narrative’s soul of a public war between a superstar and his die-hard fan? I know it’s easy to pen and difficult to execute, but isn’t that the same as remaking an already-loved movie?

Anurag Kashyap’s guy Rajeev Ravi (Dev D, Gangs Of Wasseypur) keeps it pretty basic when it comes to cinematography. Apart from a couple of routine action sequences, there’s nothing really to boast about how the film ‘looks’. Ritesh Soni’s editing is of no help letting the second half drown into oblivion.

Selfiee Movie Review: Star Performance

Akshay Kumar’s obsession over his lucky number 9 continues with his character Vijay driving Cars with numbers like 4545 or 0909, and even his driving license form states his address as ’27’ Pali Hill. Most of the time, due to the film’s self-deprecatory humour, it almost looks like Akshay is breaking the fourth wall to talk to the viewers. This is something Akshay can do while sleepwalking, the performance doesn’t boost the dragging narrative. He retains his best self while delivering a few genuinely hilarious lines but unfortunately that’s not enough.

Emraan Hashmi’s Om’s star-worshipping isn’t really built well to develop a connection solely depending on his performance. It would be really hard for the non-fans to completely understand what is he going through. The transformation of Om from a die-hard fan to a failed father to a revengeful RTO Inspector fails to evoke any kind of emotions apart from “just end this already?”

Nushrratt Bharuccha & Diana Penty as respective housewives of Emraan & Akshay have nothing to do in the film apart from making sure their husbands don’t f*ck up. Extremely fit & the 53-year-old handsome Mahesh Thakur barely gets any footage and it’ll puzzle me forever, how can you take someone as talented as him without giving him some meaty jokes? Abhimanyu Singh’s character writing is hilarious leading to some rib-tickling scenes, leaving the best for the last. ‘Corporator’ played by Meghna Malik relies heavily on her natural performance bringing the best out of the character. Kusha Kapila is just there, yet again.

Selfiee Movie Review:

Selfiee Movie Review: Direction, Music

Raj Mehta should stick to the original scripts for his skills to flourish. You definitely see bits of him in the comedic pieces of the film but that’s about it, it’s a pretty generic attempt otherwise. I’d decode the above line for you, Mehta fails to handle the ‘masala’ portions of Vijay Kumar but nails the gut-busting scenes of Superstar Suraj (played by Abhimanyu Singh).

People like Tanishk Bagchi, Yo Yo Honey Singh, The PropheC, Lijo George, DJ Chetas, Vikram Montrose, Aditya Yadav, Tarun & Anu Malik (for Main Khiladi Tu Anari remake) came together for the songs but couldn’t deliver a single track that could be in my playlist for even a week. PropheC’s Vibe is ruined by making it the ‘for the sake of hook line’ song (When you hear the original, the song starts with the hook line bringing the early high which the film version fails to achieve).

Selfiee Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Selfiee could be true to the original but that’s also somewhere its weak point. The film shines when it doesn’t ‘try’ to copy and that’s why this needed a cosmetical makeover from not only outside but inside as well.

Selfiee releases on 23rd February, 2023.

'Selfiee' movie review: The Khiladi finally gets playful

'Selfiee' movie review: The Khiladi finally gets playful

Before Selfiee begins, Akshay Kumar comes on screen, but not to give stale sermons against nicotine. “I am what I am because of my fans,” he says. “This film is dedicated to all of them. We expect it to meet their expectations.”

In the last two years, Kumar hasn’t been able to backflip over both commercial and critical bars. Even when he has tried (saving) everything. In Aanand L. Rai’s Atrangi Re (2021) he tries to save the audience from bigotry, in Samrat Prithviraj (2022)--just like many others--he tries to save the motherland from Muslim invaders, in Raksha Bandhan (2022) he tries but fails to save his sister from dowry killing, in his OTT debut Cuttputlli (2022) he tries to save young girls from a psychopath, and in Ram Setu (2022) he tries to save…well Ram Setu and also viewers from the “perils of atheism.” In my wild imagination, maybe Kumar’s PA (like the one played by Mahesh Thakur in Selfiee) came up to him and whispered in his ear, “Sir, nothing is working” and Kumar fierily looked into their eyes, holds them by the hair and asks, “Aur bacha kya hain bachane ko (What is left to be saved?). The PA, about to cry, says, “Yourself sir, yourself.”

So, the gloves are off, the neck muscles are cracked and Akshay Kumar is out to play on his image. After the release of Pathaan, director Siddharth Anand explained in an interview that Shah Rukh Khan’s inaccessibility created a thirst for him in public, which led to the film’s record-smashing success. Public intrigue might not be on Kumar’s side since he dominates all screens all year (his character in Selfiee says, “I have no time, I have to do four films in a year, two for OTT too; 28 ads, 17 shows and 1 or 2 reality show also”). Whenever a Kumar film releases social media is rife with jokes (“By the time my clothes dry another of his films come”… yada yada yada), but he might have aced it this time, at least with fans of his comic timing.

In Selfiee, Kumar wears his stardom on his sleeve like a fitness band. He plays Vijay Kumar whose last film was Don’t Angry Me, which is also the catchphrase of Kumar’s character from Rowdy Rathore (2012). Vijay’s entry song, Kudi Ni Teri Vibe, seems like it was supposed to be in Singh is Kinng (2008). His motto is “main kaam se nahi thakta, sirf araam se thakta hoon (I don’t get tired of work, I only get tired of rest). Vijay Kumar is Akshay Kumar, the only difference is that Vijay is in need of a driving licence and not an Indian citizenship (stuff for another film maybe?).

The mantle to give this licence is on ‘Vijay sir’s’ biggest fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (a delightfully casted Emraan Hashmi). All Aggarwal wants is a selfie, but things don’t go as planned and it is Superstar Vs Common Man all over again. We last saw this volatile combination of cars, fans and stars in An Action Hero (Kumar had a cameo in it). However, the media satire, like it was in the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, is even more tired here. How many times can one laugh at a news anchor straining his vocal cords?

Still, director Raj Mehta knows how to put Kumar at ease. His last outing with the actor, Good Newwz (2019), saw Kumar as an irritable middle-aged husband vexed with life, his wife, cracking fart jokes and rolling joints. In Selfiee too Kumar pokes fun at his persona, calls himself “the producer’s actor” and flashes his “gummy” smile. But it’s not just him, there is great help around in the form of Hashmi, who plays an amiable father trying to be his child’s hero (In 2016, Hashmi wrote an autobiographical book, The Kiss of Life, about his son’s fight against cancer. The foreword was written by Kumar). There is also Abhimanyu Singh, playing a failed movie star, whose TV advertisements on English classes and Bhandup’s gyms have the best writing. Nushratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty, however, do what most Hindi film heroines do, motivate the male lead.

The coherent storyline and perfect beats of Selfiee owe it to the Malayalam original Driving Licence (2019). But, while the Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer was more solemn, Selfiee plays to Kumar’s image, sometimes a bit too much. For instance, in Driving Licence, Prithviraj’s introductory scene shows him dressed as a covert soldier, sneaking in behind goons, while in Selfiee, Kumar smoothly machine-guns a chopper. But I have no qualms, I like my Akshay seedha, zyada.

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Diana Penty, Nushratt Bharuccha, Abhimanyu Singh, Kusha Kapila

Selfiee movie review: A reasonably entertaining Akshay Kumar starrer after a long time

Selfiee is not as good as its source material, Driving Licence starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, but it is immensely superior to the mediocrity, loudness and propaganda that dominate Akshay’s filmography.

Selfiee movie review: A reasonably entertaining Akshay Kumar starrer after a long time

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Meghna Malik, Neev Ahuja, Mahesh Thakur, Abhimanyu Singh, Adah Sharma, Mrunal Thakur

Director: Raj Mehta

Language: Hindi

It’s been a couple of decades since remakes of big-budget Telugu and Tamil blockbusters became all the rage in Bollywood. Over the years, transposing a men-centric masala-inflected culturally generic storyline from a southern to a northern Indian setting and replacing a big, bankable male star from the south with a big, bankable male star from the north became a safe bet for Hindi film producers and stars. Akshay Kumar is one of Bollywood’s top men actors whose career has benefited from this formula. Malayalam cinema has proved to be a tougher nut to crack since this film industry is best known outside Kerala not for its overtly commercial fare lionising men stars, but for thoughtful, culturally rooted middle-of-the-road films. These are harder to relocate, which is the likely reason why Bollywood has mostly stayed away from them in the pre-pandemic era, with occasional attempts such as the heartwarming Katha Parayumpol remade to lukewarm effect as the Irrfan starrer Billu or Manichitrathazhu revisited as the qualitatively lesser but financially fruitful Bhool Bhulaiyaa with Akshay_._

In recent years with streaming platforms giving the pan-India audience easy access to cinema of all languages, Hindi remakes of south Indian films have proved to be more challenging. Already under fire for its lack of originality, Bollywood has spent the pandemic turning out a parade of unimaginative remakes, including remakes of a number of critically acclaimed Malayalam hits. These Hindi versions have either had nothing new to offer ( Vikram Vedha , Jersey ) or were politically and culturally watered down versions of their originals ( Mili reworked from Helen being a prime example). The Hindi Drishyam 1 and Drishyam 2 , remakes of Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam films starring Mohanlal, have been honourable exceptions.

Selfiee (with a double “e”) is the official Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Driving Licence _._ The latter starred Prithviraj Sukumaran as a superstar who publicly clashes with his fan, a motor vehicle inspector played by Suraj Venjaramoodu. While supremely entertaining, Driving Licence was also a telling commentary on human nature, the dynamics that automatically come into play when a David and Goliath go into battle, the power of the smallest cog in the government machinery, the politics in film industries, the ephemeral nature of celebritydom in the era of sensationalist TV news and much more. I don’t understand the bankruptcy of ideas afflicting Hindi filmdom right now, or why Selfiee needed to be made at all when the smartly produced Driving Licence is just a hop, a skip and an Amazon Prime subscription away, but given that remakes are the go-to routine for Bollywood these days, it should be noted that this one is better than travesties like Laxmii and Cuttputtli that have been inflicted on us. Selfiee is not as good as its source material, but it’s reasonably fun – a flashier, less thoughtful version of Driving Licence that in a couple of instances is surprisingly better thought out.

In Selfiee , based on the story by Sachy, Akshay plays Vijay Kumar, a Bollywood veteran who is shooting in Bhopal when he suddenly needs a new driving licence at short notice. Vijay is juggling a personal crisis, shooting requirements and his producer’s desperation when he is asked to meet the motor vehicle inspector Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi) for a few minutes for this purpose. A rendezvous is arranged through a local corporator (Meghna Malik) so that Om Prakash, who is Vijay’s diehard fan, can fulfil his dream of getting a selfie with the actor while also being in a position to explain himself if questions are raised about how a star’s licence was expedited when the general public is put through the grind by his office.

A misunderstanding at Vijay and Om Prakash’s first face-to-face encounter leaves Vijay enraged and Om Prakash hurt beyond words. Om Prakash then digs in his heels and insists that Vijay must go through the entire rigmarole of form filling and tests that ordinary citizens endure for a licence, thus leading to a media tamasha unleashing forces beyond both their control.

For the most part, director Raj Mehta ( Good Newwz , Jugjugg Jeeyo ) embraces Lal Jr’s easy storytelling style that served Driving Licence well. The departures from the original come primarily in the writing and tend to adversely affect the film’s natural tone.

The Hindi screenplay by Rishhabh Sharrma softens the movie star’s arrogance, which is probably done in the service of the leading man, but also inexplicably subtracts from the manipulations that stars have to fight on a daily basis. As a consequence it is unable to establish Vijay as a well-rounded, relatable character in the way Hareendran in Driving Licence was.

Vijay’s producer and rival are caricatures in comparison with the well-written characters played by Lalu Alex and Suresh Krishna in the original. And it is worth noting that adapting a Malayalam script for a Hindi film translates into vastly reducing the abundant and normalised representations of religious minorities that is such a beautiful part of Malayalam cinema.

Selfiee is flashier than Driving Licence , possibly as a result of the collective impact of the insistent background score, a loud song ‘n’ dance included in the narrative as an introduction for Om Prakash and his son (Neev Ahuja), an unnecessary larger-than-life moment assigned to Akshay towards the end that not only deflects from the overall tenor of the film but also suffers in a comparison with the much more convincing crowd scene featuring Prithviraj, and a high-glam remix of Main Khiladi Tu Anari – a landmark number from Akshay’s career – appended in a clichéd fashion to the closing credits. The song at the end of the Malayalam movie worked because it was relevant to the script since it had already come up earlier as Kuruvilla’s fantasy.

In the Main Khiladi Tu Anari remix, Akshay breaks the fourth wall to address the audience’s memories of that song from the 1994 blockbuster of the same name, thus reminding us that the person we’re watching is Akshay the actor not Vijay the character in the film. This is a self-defeating choice to make because so much of the enjoyment of watching Driving Licence came from the emotions a viewer might have for Prithviraj while simultaneously wondering whether the film is giving us a glimpse of his actual personality and reality couched in fiction. The bow to Akshay’s stardom dilutes that impression in Selfiee especially when combined with other self-referencing, especially the scene in which Vijay lists out his multiple commitments, which comes across less as a statement from Vijay than an act of defiance by Akshay who has faced criticism in real life for spreading himself out thin at the expense of quality. The sum total of these elements is that while Selfiee retains the basic meaning of the original film, the pay-off is considerably weakened.

Two changes in Selfiee ’s screenplay reflect well on this team. It seemed odd that a person as high-profile as Hareendran in Driving Licence would risk retaining a slimy chap like Johnny Peringodan (Saiju Kurup) in his intimate circle when the man is so evidently unreliable. Replacing him with an opportunistic neta who Vijay interacts with only out of compulsion makes sense. It was also troubling to see Kuruvilla (Suraj Venjaramoodu) in Driving Licence casually smacking his wife more than once, in keeping with the normalisation of domestic violence seen too often in Malayalam commercial cinema – Selfiee discards these portions. The exaggerated writing of Kuruvilla’s wife has also been tweaked to create Om Prakash’s wife (Nushrratt Bharuccha), which would have been a good thing if she hadn’t been made so bland.

Akshay is playing Akshay here and not unexpectedly, knows the job. Diana Penty brings a glowing dignity to her role as Vijay’s wife, thus begging the question why we don’t see her in more films. That said, it’s infuriating that male stars persist in their preference for women 20 to 30 years their junior playing their wives and lovers. Emraan has the most challenging of the film’s roles and manages to make Om Prakash likeable even while he is being petty, by ensuring that we know he’s coming from a place of genuine pain and not just a wounded ego.

So yes, Selfiee is not as good as Driving Licence , but it is not bad either. It’s certainly immensely superior to the mediocrity, loudness and propaganda that dominate Akshay’s filmography.

Rating: 2.25 (out of 5 stars)

Selfiee movie.

SELFIEE is the story of an actor's fight with his fan. Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is an RTO inspector based in Bhopal. He lives with his wife Minti (Nushrratt Bharuccha) and son Gabbu (Neev Ahuja). He's a die-hard fan of Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) and always makes ...  sure to watch the latter's film, first day first show. Om's joy knows no bounds when he learns that Vijay Kumar will be shooting his film ‘Falak Tak’ in Bhopal. He and Gabbu go to see him, hoping to click a selfie. But he doesn't get a chance as thousands of fans have also arrived to welcome Vijay Kumar. But he gets another chance when the corporator Vimla Tiwari (Meghna Malik) requests Om to help Vijay Kumar get the driving license, which the actor has lost. Om readily agrees and expresses the desire to click a picture with Vijay. Hence, he asks Vijay to arrive at the RTO office. Vijay agrees. When he reaches the RTO office, Vijay is shocked to see that the media has already arrived. A narrative is spread that Vijay never had a driving licence and that all these years, he was illegally driving a car. Assuming that Om called the media, Vijay blasts him and leaves. An angry Om stops him from driving the car, citing that he doesn't possess a driving license. The moment is captured by the media. In no time, Om Prakash Agarwal becomes a celebrity and is praised for taking on a mighty, arrogant star. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Selfiee Movie Review: Another Day, Another South Indian Film Remake In Bollywood That Fails To Impress

Selfiee Movie Review: Starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles, the Raj Mehta-directorial released in cinemas today. Whether to watch it or skip it, read our review.

Selfiee Movie Review: Film stars Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles. (Image Credits: Twitter)

One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Selfiee released in cinemas today. The film has been directed by Raj Mehta and also stars Diana Penty and Nushrratt Bharuccha in pivotal roles.

With Selfiee, Bollywood has yet again tried to use the hit formula of remaking a successful South Indian film. Case in point: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Driving License. The Malayalam language film released in cinemas in 2019 and won over the audiences with its emotional father-son story and believable plot.

No points for guessing, Akshay Kumar eyes a big hit to redeem his status after his last few films consecutively underperformed at the box-office. But is Selfiee that film?

Here’s our Selfiee movie review:

Selfie movie plot .

The plot of the film revolves around superstar Akshay Kumar and cop Emraan Hashmi. Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar, who is the man of masses, needs to get a new driver's license. The police official, Abhimanyu Singh who is a big fan of the superstar along with his son, gets into a war of words between the two. The two then get onto loggerheads with each other which eventually escalates into a prime-time news feud.

Selfie Movie First Half

The first half of Selfiee revolves around the larger-than-life hero, Akshay Kumar, who is a massy actor and is loved by fans across the country, and is in a dire need for a new driving license in order to shoot for a film sequence in Bhopal. The RTO officer played by Emraan Hashmi tries to add chuckles, but unfortunately, fails more than he succeeds.

While it’s more of an overstretch for a big fan to get a Selfiee with his favorite actor by hook or crook, that’s basically the storyline of the film. A misunderstanding leads Vijay Kumar to insult Abhimanyu Singh in front of his senior officials, the RTO officer, just like in classic Bollywood styles, vows to take his revenge.

With a few punchlines and one-liners that stand out, the first half of Selfiee is the most entertaining that the film gets.

Selfie Movie Second Half

The second half of Selfiee relies more on drama, less on comedy. There is an intense face off between its lead characters, and the staple involvement of media coverage with a false Bhopali accent doesn’t seem to make the film any better.

Selfie Movie Cast Performances

Akshay Kumar as superstar Vijay Kumar shines in this comic role. The actor proves why he works best with Raj Mehta, and entertains the audiences with his comic timing. This one comes as a breather from all the drama-centric roles Akshay Kumar has been acting in lately.

Emraan Hashmi struggles to shine as the cop, who is a super fan-turned-arch nemesis of Akshay Kumar. While Emraan Hashmi constantly tries to impress the audience with his new avatar, the actor fails to hit the mark with his average performance.

Nushratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty have nearly nothing pivotal to do in the film, while Meghna Malik stands out in her comic timing, especially in the scenes with Akshay Kumar. Social media favorite Kusha Kapila also plays a special cameo role in the film and manages to shine.

Selfie Movie Music

The songs of Selfiee failed to charm the audiences, with just one song becoming a chartbuster, the dance-number Main Khiladi. Even Honey Singh’s song Kudi Chemkeeli also provides you with no glitters. Mrunal Thakur’s special song Kudiye Ni Teri is the only song which stands out, which is also by the way, is a remake of a popular Punjabi song.

Selfie Movie Overall Verdict

Selfiee is just another attempt from the Hindi film industry to score over a South-Indian successful film. For those who have watched the original one, there’s nothing new that the Akshay Kumar-starrer offers, apart from the sizzling track ‘Kudiyee Ni Teri’ with Mrunal Thakur. Selfiee is just another average remake from Bollywood’s Pandora box that you can watch once, or maybe wait till it gets on OTT.

Selfiee is now streaming in theaters near you.

Selfiee on DisneyPlus Hotstar Review: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi as Star and Fan Miss the Point of Prithviraj’s Driving Licence

Selfiee review

Director: Raj Mehta

Writer: Rishhabh Sharrma

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Diana Penty, Nushrratt Bharuccha

You’ve got to hand it to Dharma Productions. While having given India’s post-liberalisation era some of its most iconic commercial films and characters, as producers of adaptations, the company seems to have perfected the art of completely misinterpreting the source material, taking the essence of the original, discarding it as though it were decoration, and glamorising the meagre remains with a blitz of glitter and humour. First, they scrubbed the Marathi film Sairat (2016) clean of any reference to caste and made Dhadak (2018) — adapting a story that is pivoted upon the viciousness of caste . And now, they’ve brought us Selfiee , based on the Malayalam film Driving Licence (2019) . The adaptations are not bad films in themselves. They have a sense of narrative rhythm and heavyweight drama doused in a background score that refuses to let your eyelids get heavy. They just miss the very point of the story they are telling.

Let’s begin with Driving Licence , a strange and wonderful two-hero vengeful story where a fan and a film star butt heads. A misunderstanding leads to Kuruvilla, a fan and a Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspector (Suraj Venjaramoodu), turning on his idol, superstar Hareendran (Prithviraj Sukumaran). Kuruvilla refuses to give Hareendran a driving licence, who needs it for a film he’s shooting. The film revolves around one question: When does your demand for self respect become a performance of your ego? The charm of Driving Licence is that it insists on blurring the distinction between protagonist and antagonist; both are both. There is no right and wrong here; there is just one masculine ego tussling against another. Over the course of a scene, your sympathy slithers between sides, from fan to star to fan. The central threat is to self respect as it solidifies, congeals and becomes ego.

Selfiee , starring Akshay Kumar as the star and Emraan Hashmi as the fan, completely undoes this logic. Prithviraj in Driving Licence gives Hareendran an arrogance that’s both full of swag but also off-putting. His anger is loud and brash. His scowls burst. His coolness is derived from his edge and his edge keeps nudging the story forward, provoking the fan. In one of the most seething yet stylish moments of the film, Hareendran shows Kuruvilla the middle finger.

The Hindi adaptation doesn’t dare to be even half as provocative. Selfiee seems contractually obligated to not have an edge. Akshay Kumar plays Vijay, who is not allowed to even raise his eyebrow in irony. He is a sincere do-gooder and a dull caricature of what Dharma Productions wants us to think Hindi cinema stars are. He is the antidote to #BoycottBollywood because he is such a flaccid nothingburger, no one would even afford him the attention needed to boycott him. The film even begins with a disclaimer in which Kumar tells us he’s not the hero in the film and that he loves his fans and owes his success to them, just so we never lose sight of the film being fiction. This is the problem. Selfiee thinks its audience is dumb; that is cannot distinguish a representation from a reality. And yet, it has the audacity to adapt a smart movie for this dumb audience.

Vijay is, for all intents and purposes, the protagonist of the film. In this lazy rewriting, Emraan Hashmi is given the role of the antagonist, the RTO sub-inspector Om Prakash Agarwal. His is the ego that bubbles to the surface so insistently, with his smirks and his sudden bursts of that rounded Bhopali accent — yes, Selfiee is set in Bhopal.

Why Bhopal? Like Malayalam films which have a certain casual joy in setting their films in a local, broken-in world, Selfiee’s Bhopal is an aesthetic reprieve at best, one that allows for some top shots of the city as a sports car revs through it, one that allows the main antagonist an accent that has neither polish nor comfort. There is no joy in this Bhopal — the food, the clothing, the theatres, the way houses are built and decked. The dullness of this setting is surprising because Selfiee is shot by Rajeev Ravi, who gave us No Smoking (2007) , DevD (2009) , and Bombay Velvet (2015); whose frames have leaked sepia and colour with such a reckless artistry, who has made smoke look like puffy clouds shot out of rounded mouths. Yet Ravi’s frames in this film have the most grating lighting — a dining table for example, so dimly lit, in order for the fluorescent blue fish tank to pop; the bright, flat interiors, the bright flat lighting of the face where an afternoon cannot be distinguished from morning or evening. The tension of the last hour of the film involves a flight that needs to be caught, and yet, there seems to be no change in the light as we rev to that moment, as though Bhopal’s daylight is stuck in stasis. It seems Ravi was hired to do the exact opposite of what his filmography has boasted. It’s as though Dharma Productions is on a mission to co-opting talent till it looks and feels indistinguishable.

Sprung from an idea that wanted to normalise both the hero and the fan as people whose love for each other is not unconditional, Selfiee loses its sharpness by trying to establish Vijay as a star. Director Raj Mehta and writer Rishhabh Sharrma try to spruce up the proceedings with routine, punctual gags. This is something Mehta has a strong, admirable grasp over. The humour, which includes a decked up actress farting in the arms of her lover during a shoot, has an unstable quality, completely liquifying any tension and steamrolling over any emotional flux. Take, for example, the fraught moment where Om Prakash’s wife ( Nushrratt Bharuccha ) calls him after seeing him being beaten up on television. She asks if he is okay, because she saw how people hounded him. She uses the phrase “pel diya” and its embedded humour is such an unexpected and sharp contrast to the seriousness of the situation, I burst out laughing in the theatre.

A film like Selfiee needs to be a tender dance of humour and heavyweight feelings. What it needs most, to achieve this balance, is maturity. Yet where to find this in a film that wilfully looks at a text and junks its meaning?

In case you were wondering, Driving Licence is available to stream on Prime Video.

About Selfiee Movie (2023)

Selfiee is the Hindi remake of the 2019 Malayalam-language comedy Driving License that follows famous actor Prithviraj Sukumaran (Hareendran) who needs to renew his driver's license, and runs across a fan in the motor vehicle agent. A series of misunderstandings cause many a problem.

A snippet from Selfiee shows Akshay Kumar dressed in a sharp charcoal coloured suit alongside fellow Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi in a red and white plaid shirt dancing and clicking a selfie to a song of the titular name.

The film is Prithviraj Productions' debut in Hindi-language cinema, and it is joining hands with Dharma Productions for the same.

Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar-Emraan Hashmi's dull performances make it unbearable to watch

The storyline is very simple and disastrous. selfiee features forceful jokes, cheap humour, and repetitive satire. while for some parts, the comedy worked but soon you start to get bored..

Selfiee

  • Movie Name: Selfiee
  • Critics Rating: 2 / 5
  • Release Date: Feb 24, 2023
  • Director: Raj Mehta
  • Genre: comedy-drama

Selfiee Movie Review: After Jug Jugg Jeeyo and Good Newwz, Raj Mehta's directorial Selfiee has failed to live up to the expectations of the audience. Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi starrer narrates the story of superstar Vijay Kumar, played by Akshay and his affair with RTO Inspector Om Prakash Aggarwal, played by Emraan Hashmi. This film is inspired by the Malayalam movie Driving Licence, which released in 2019, however, it turned into a disaster. The film also features Diana Penty and Nushrratt Bharuccha in the lead roles.

Selfiee is about a superstar and a fan pitted against each other. RTO Inspector Om Prakash Agarwal, whose posting is in Bhopal, is a big fan of film star Vijay and is ready to go to any extent to meet him and just to take a selfie. He worships Vijay like a god and watches all his movies. One day when Vijay comes to Bhopal to shoot a movie, Om Prakash and his son Gappu went to meet him and take a selfie.

So, as destiny has it, Vijay Kumar needs a driving licence, which Om Prakash can provide easily, but there is a twist. He wants a selfie with his superstar and a small misunderstanding pits these two against each other. The battle of fan vs superstar flashes everywhere in the media. Will Emraan Hashmi get the selfie?

Also, Akshay looks the same as in the previous films. Yes, Emraan has chosen different roles for himself in the last few films. And he has played his role well. The audience's faces light up whenever Abhimanyu Singh turns villain when he comes on the screen

Talking about the female leads, neither Om Prakash's wife Minty (Nushrratt Bharuccha) nor Vijay Kumar's partner Diana Penty had much to do in the film. They were not even given much screen time. The hottest figure in Selfiee has to be Mrunal Thakur.

  • Emraan Hashmi
