According to the World Health Organization, noise pollution is a dangerous health issue. The European Environment (EEA) says noise pollution is responsible for 16,600 premature deaths in Europe alone.

A person continuously facing noise pollution can start meeting health issues and can be dangerous in the long term. Several unpleasant noise distractions can bring problems later in life.

Cities have become noisier with car honking, loudspeakers; traffic, etc. leading to noise pollution. Construction of roads, buildings, apartments and other areas are also resulting in increased noise pollution.

What is Noise Pollution?

According to the WHO, noise pollution is a noise above 65db, which can severely affect both humans and animals. A noise beyond 75 dB can be painful and will affect the person severely.

It is impossible to see the danger posed by noise pollution. On land and under the sea, you can't see it, but it still exists. Humans and other organisms can be affected adversely by noise pollution if it is an unwanted or disturbing sound.

A decibel is the measurement of sound. Rustling leaves (20-30 decibels) or thunderclaps (120 decibels) to the wail of sirens (120-140 decibels) are all sounds that occur naturally in the natural environment. What is Noise pollution?

Noise pollution is a type of pollution that does not directly affect the environment but has adverse effects on the hearing abilities of the inhabitants of our ecosystem.

Hearing of an organism is directly linked to the nervous systems internally.

Hence noise pollution affects the mental health and disturbs the delicate balance of an individual in case of over-exposure to noise levels beyond a certain decibel.

There may have been many instances, especially when you’re living in a city, that you’ve been so annoyed with the noise around you, that you lose your composure. You grab your ears and just wait for the noise to stop.

That is the essence of noise pollution. It comprises of all the loud noises around you, caused by vehicular traffic, heavy machinery in factories and sometimes, the disturbance of trains and aeroplanes, if you live near an airport or railway station .

The blaring sounds from loudspeakers and high speakers are not to be left behind, especially when there are processions or big festivals taking place.

Let us ponder over a few examples for better understanding.

Whales are known to emit their call louder when they detect a submarine since a submarine uses SONAR and other sound oriented devices for communication and navigation.

The SONAR dampens the whale’s call, making it less effective, which in turn might lead to some members not hearing it and missing some vital signal, like a hunting call.

Causes of noise pollution

Let us first begin by trying to understand how noise is generated technically.

Noise basically is a mixture of all sounds around us. These sounds originate from various sources. Inside the waveform of a noise, we can find overlapping waveform indicating mixed and jumbled outputs rendering ‘noise’.

The outcomes may contain undesirable and irritating waveform called noise. Noise pollution is more prominent in urban areas than in rural areas.

This is because rural areas have only half the amount of vehicles, minimal amount of factories and other sources producing loud noises.

It is more discomforting and annoying in particular to senior citizens, who seek a calm and peaceful atmosphere in their days of retirement. In India, festivals are a crucial part of our culture and thus, are given utmost importance.

But the celebrations and proceedings involved with these festivities result in noise pollution on a wide scale.

This scenario especially gets worse when people disregard the fact about patients in hospitals, nursing mothers, pregnant women and ill patients who need relief from such blaring noises.

Similar is the case with wedding celebrations. Nowadays, almost everyone holds a wedding procession which involves the bride and groom, either walking or on horses or carriages, slowly proceeding towards the groom’s house.

Celebrations take place on a large scale involving huge loudspeakers and noise from trumpets and drum beats causing inconvenience to residents and other establishments, including schools, colleges, hospitals and other religious establishments like temples and churches.

Well known incidences of noise pollution occur during festivals, normal, everyday traffic on the road, etc.

During festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi , Diwali etc the occurrence of sound pollution is really high.

Diwali causes noise as well as Air pollution , people celebrate Diwali for their joy, and indeed they burst crackers that create massive noise.

Traffic on the road is the primary reason for sound pollution in big cities. There are many other factors too that cause the deadly noise pollution.

Effects of noise pollution

Our human ear can detect sounds in the frequencies between 20Hz to 20 KHz. But constant exposure to sound beyond certain intensity is harmful to the ears.

We already know that sound intensity is measured in Decibels, also denoted as dB. In a normal airport, a plane that is landing or leaving the run way creates a noise exceeding intensities of 120 dB.

There are chances of irreversible damage to the human ear when exposed to noises above 80 dB. Instances of noise have been recorded from the ancient times in the cities of Rome, on account of the dawn of industrialization.

Poorly planned cities and towns are another reason where residents have to become victims of noise pollution. If the city is near an industrial area, then the residential areas face heavy instances of noise pollution.

Though the human ear’s maximum capacity of tolerating noise cannot be exactly measured, it is believed that the intensity is about 80 dB.

Continuous exposure to sounds of intensities higher than this may lead to a myriad of health problems. It may lead to physical as well as psychological changes.

A person shows increased levels of stress and becomes prone to mental illnesses if he is prone to irregular levels of noise.

Every person’s tolerance is inbuilt differently and the ability of a person to tolerate noise provides him stability from within. Beyond that threshold level, the mind senses disturbance and gets irritated by the effects of noise.

This irritability is then transferred to the inner regions on the brain wherein complex reactions alter normal functioning of brain components.

When this process happens over long periods of time, the brain functioning itself gets altered and that’s when we say that an abnormality has occurred in the mental well being of a person.

The chances of a cardio vascular disease are also highly elevated. It is not just humans who are affected, but animals in the vicinity too face disturbance.

Dogs, with a higher sense of hearing, may get their ears damaged by exposure to higher levels of noise pollution.

Wildlife is adversely affected, as the loud man-made noises drown the mating calls, warning alarms and threat noises that animals use normally to communicate with one another.

For example in birds, the bird robin is observed to sing more likely at night, in a heavily noise polluted area since, in the day time, the noises are significantly louder.

Solutions for noise pollution

The threat of noise pollution is being realized and the governments are taking measures to reduce them.

In India too, certain rules and regulations have been set up regarding noise generation and emission. But the enforcement of these laws is not incorporated on strict terms and thus the defaulters escape scot-free.

It is good to know that there are many NGOs (non-government organizations) that have taken the initiative to reduce noise pollution and so far they’ve made tremendous progress, especially in the urban areas.

The rural areas, unfortunately, still face the wrath of noise pollution. It is up to us, the educated urban crowds, to control and prohibit the curse of noise pollution.

It’s also good to create awareness among the rural inhabitants regarding the ill effects of noise pollution.

Today, everyone has come to know the deadly effect of noise pollution. The government has taken some of the crucial steps to reduce the sound pollution.

The noise of Loud Speakers should be limited and should not cross beyond a certain decibel. An individual or group isn’t permitted to use loud speakers in the vicinity of schools, colleges, and hospitals.

Government has imposed strict restrictions and posed limitations on the use of loudspeakers during festivals. It has posted a big list do’s and don’ts and applied the rules at appropriate regions of high noise traffic.

The effects of noise pollution is not restricted to human beings alone, it has deadly impacts on lives of animals as well.

To control this type of pollution, people should create awareness on its impact on human health. Airports should be situated far away from residential areas.

Manufacturing industries such as steel and iron establishments should be situated far away from residential complexes.

It’s more of an individual effort to control noise pollution. We may not be able to totally stop noise pollution , but we can definitely take steps to reduce it by a great level.

I have been a freelance book reviewer for twenty years, which means that several times a week, the postal carrier delivers packages of books—some that I requested, some that I didn’t know I wanted, and some that I won’t ever want. A year and a half ago I received in this manner a book that I did want, Darryl Pinckney’s Come Back in September, about his friendship and apprenticeship with the critic and novelist Elizabeth Hardwick. The front cover features a photo of Hardwick looking prim and elegant on the low steps outside 15 West Sixty-Seventh Street in Manhattan, where she lived in a top-floor duplex from 1961 until her death in 2007. On the back cover are two photographs of her dramatic two-story living room.

I often think about this room. Its ceilings appear to be twenty feet high. Next to the built-in bookshelves and requisite rolling ladder, swag curtains frame an enormous window, giving a theatrical effect. A Juliet balcony gently interrupts one wall. Floating in the middle of the room is a writing desk, really a library table, from which a ceramic bust of a young man rises, like a gravestone, between two lamps. I showed the pictures to my husband once. “Oh,” he said. “She lived in the Morgan Library.”

My own desk is wedged into one corner of the bedroom I share with my husband, behind the children’s trampoline, between a hulking armoire and an ugly IKEA thing exploding with file boxes and rolls of scribbled-on paper that I really ought to throw away. Cairns of books are at my feet. If I turn my head just so I can glimpse a cluster of grocery bags brimming with toys and still more books, which I plan, someday, to sell or give away. Sometimes I pile the bags on top of each other to reduce their footprint, and when they threaten to topple, spread them out again.

What interests me about the photographs of Hardwick’s living room is that they provide evidence of the environment in which a brilliant and original mind worked. The couch on which she sat when she thought about Donne or Melville expressed a sensibility, but it also incubated one. On my way to my own desk, I catch a glimpse of the bags filled with crap. Whether or not I acknowledge it, the crap is always buried in the piece. Sometimes it rises right to the top.

criticism is an act of autobiography. The work of making an argument, coming to a judgment, or simply choosing which books or objects to give time and attention to is inevitably, helplessly, an expression of values—and an expression of self. Our tastes tell on us as much as our syntax and tone; that mysterious compound called sensibility is formed by some strange alchemy of innate tendencies, life experiences, and material circumstances. In the pursuit of explicating a text, observing its patterns and structure, how it works, what it means, I also explicate myself—revealing what catches my interest, where my attention lingers. I might do this more, or less, intentionally, but I always do it.

Whatever is going on in the life of the critic is going to show up in her reading; it can’t not. Reading, writing, and thinking have experiential texture. The place and context in which I do those activities shapes them. Whether we are informed by political events or everyday life, it is not always possible, or desirable, to block out the noise of the world. When I write criticism, then, I try to use this fact of myself in some way. I might openly acknowledge why I am so invested in some aspect of a work. I might try to think through myself, pushing to arrive at a point at the very far edge of what I can see. I am a passionate adherent of close reading, the practice of being carefully attentive to words that are not our own. But close reading always involves the critic layering her own point of view over or next to the text’s, even as she observes, explains, interprets, evaluates. What I should not do is pretend that my reading is definitive, neutral, objective, or somehow free of myself and my environment. I write criticism to encounter an object, and I read criticism to encounter another person encountering an object. If I wanted a randomized controlled trial, I would be in the sciences.

There is something hopeful about writing a review. It’s like putting a message in a bottle or sending up a flare.

Of course, the money one is paid to write a piece is one of the material constraints that shapes the work of criticism. Word rates have not increased in decades, while the cost of living goes up every year. According to Cathy Curtis’s A Splendid Intelligence: The Life of Elizabeth Hardwick , beginning in the late 1990s Hardwick was paid about $4,000 per New York Review of Books essay—an amount comparable to what writers are paid to write long book reviews today at a marquee publication like NYRB or The New Yorker . (Small publications pay much less.) Newspaper book reviews have been contracting for decades, and while magazines like The Nation and The Atlantic cover books, the hourly rate on a piece, once you do the calculation, is dismal. “Little” magazines and online reviews are wonderful for the culture, but no one could pay the rent writing for those outlets alone. If you have a secure academic job and write reviews on the side, it’s nice work. For the freelancer—I am one—it’s a foolish undertaking. As Russell Jacoby noted nearly forty years ago, one reason there are not more full-time freelance writers is that most take staff writer positions or university jobs or quit writing altogether. It is impossible to know what ideas never came into the world because someone couldn’t or wouldn’t accept an hourly rate that barely covers the babysitter.

if the criticism I write is always limited by the fact that it is I who am writing it, bounded as I am by material constraints, it is also true that within that limit a profound freedom of thought persists. Sometimes when I read, I do have the sensation of blocking out the immediate physical world, journeying to an entirely different place, losing the sense of my body. It’s not just leaving myself behind that is freeing; it’s discovering myself. Writing a review is the best, maybe the only, way I can discover what I think. I don’t come to reviewing with my ideas already formed; I have to build them, sentence by sentence. For me, writing a review is a way of getting closer to an object, taking it apart to understand how it works. I get closer to and farther away from myself in the process, even as I know that I will inevitably ask questions that betray myself and my interests. The question I am most aware of asking has to do with point of view: I want to understand an object’s way of looking at the world. What would I have to believe about the world in order for this book to be true ? This is the kind of question I get most excited about asking.

Criticism is a relationship with an object, and as such it involves all of the regular psychic drama—idealization and fantasy; avoidance, hostility, and disappointment; the desire to know and a fascination with what is unknown; displacement from our own life onto the object. The person writing criticism has to always be on guard that the irritations and frustrations of writing do not get taken out on the object under review. Even pieces that begin in love and admiration can end in resentment and hate. I have noticed that after writing a review, I often lose interest in the author or resist reading their next book. If reviewing is a way to know something deeply, it’s also a way to say goodbye.

But the truth is, people who do this quite insane and marginal thing of writing criticism do it because they have a passionate attachment to literature. Living Out Loud, Headphones Nowhere to Be Found

Welcome to their conversation. (Or YouTube video. Or baseball game.) For people bothered by the liberal use of speakerphones, the public sphere can be a circle of hell.

Hang out anywhere there are people — Amtrak, Burger King, the I.C.U. — and it can feel as if there’s no escape from their noise. A Mets game, the Beyoncé discography, FaceTime conversations about nothing: Thanks to the unfettered use of speakerphones, other people’s business is now yours too, loudly.

To be fair, not using headphones may have nothing to do with disrespect. Many smartphones don’t have traditional headphone jacks. Bluetooth headphones can be pricey. Sometimes you just forgot to bring earbuds and it’s your mom’s birthday.

But on Reddit recently , the second most popular answer to the question “What do you secretly judge people for?” was “when they watch TikToks loud in a quiet room without headphones.”

Cellphones make it easy to aggravate an entire subway car, but this isn’t a 21st-century issue; ask anyone who remembers boombox-era New York City. But there’s a difference between having a conversation on the phone and having your speaker on. For some people, going sans headphones doesn’t register as a problem. For others, it’s an affront — in some cases, debilitatingly so.

According to the etiquette expert Myka Meier, the issue is a clash over what constitutes civic pollution.

“On our phones, we selfishly have interests that we are able to tap into any second of any day, and we are so used to it that we forget other people are around us,” said Ms. Meier, who shares tips on removing tea bags and answering text messages with her 640,000 Instagram followers. “I get embarrassed if I cause somebody to feel uncomfortable or if I take up someone else’s space. A lot of people don’t feel that anymore.”

Top 2024 Hillsborough grads plot path ahead for Florida amid rampant growth

The explosion of growth in Florida since World War II has continually vexed planners, business leaders, environmentalists and elected officials in a state that’s more susceptible to the elements than just about anywhere else in the U.S.

Mix in the rising seas and temperatures brought on by climate change, and the Sunshine State’s days of growth appear limited.

And yet, new residents keep arriving.

Hillsborough County’s top high school seniors weighed in on the following question, which will be sure to play out in their lifetime:

In 2022, Florida was the fastest-growing state in the nation. The state remains on track to experience significant population growth. How should Florida protect its natural resources, such as wilderness and other open spaces, as it welcomes newcomers?

Only those at the top 3% of their class were asked to write a 250-word essay in response to the question as part of the annual R.F. “Red” Pittman Tribune Scholars program, named for a publisher of the former Tampa Tribune newspaper and now sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times .

The judges this year were Stephen Lambert, English professor and quality enhancement plan director at Hillsborough Community College; Yuly Restrepo, assistant professor of English at the University of Tampa; and Jim Verhulst, deputy editor of editorials for the Tampa Bay Times.

They chose from 152 entries.

Each winner received a scholarship for $1,500. They are Reagan Miller, Academy of the Holy Names; Olivia Rivadulla, Sickles High School; and Adam Tahiri, Alonso High School.

Reagan plans to attend the University of Notre Dame to pursue a degree in finance, with a minor in music.

Honeymoon Island State Park is quiet and serene in the early morning; a few families are sprinkled across the beach, and the osprey and seagulls are my only company.

But by midday, flocks of people fill Honeymoon’s beaches, setting up camp in the sand, while even more are waiting in cars backed up along the Dunedin Causeway.

The daily throngs of visitors — who come in at risk of dragging noise pollution or leaving behind their trash — could easily cause sustained damage to this beautiful beach.

Thankfully, Honeymoon Island’s status as a state park is its superpower, providing balance and protection so that its visitors recreate while respecting the vulnerable ecosystem on its shores.

Honeymoon Island has a long and storied history, from its beginnings as a quaint vacation spot to an amphibious vehicle testing site for the Department of Defense in World War II. Its graduation to a state park happened only because a developer’s renovation plans in the 1960s fell through.

Today, additional resources like natural trails, a nature museum, and bird observation decks educate visitors on Honeymoon Island’s unique ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts.

As our Florida economy continues to see unprecedented population growth and increased residential and commercial development, it is imperative that our state government plans deliberately to invest in recreation-focused conservation lands.

Florida’s Division of State Lands is responsible for this type of development; their role in creating ecotourism opportunities among these lands will be the answer to balancing state conservation and Florida’s booming economy in a mutually beneficial way.

With more people filling up Florida’s beaches, we must make it a priority to encourage state government to invest in conservation land and protect our vulnerable ecosystem by creating more ecotourism gems as engaging as my favorite shell-filled beaches on Honeymoon Island.

Olivia Rivadulla, Sickles High School

Olivia plans to attend the University of Florida to pursue a degree in industrial and systems engineering.

As the population grows in Florida, it becomes essential to adopt sustainable land use practices that will ensure environmental preservation while accommodating a growing population.

One approach to help protect natural resources could be to financially incentivize homeowners to utilize native plant and grass species in their landscape by raising the Homestead exemption by $25,000. This would significantly benefit water management and native wildlife conservation, fostering a more ecologically balanced environment.

This Homestead exemption adjustment would enhance Florida’s water management initiatives. Native plants demand less water than non-native species because they are adapted to Florida’s climate. This would reduce long-term irrigation requirements, mitigating water-related challenges in Florida.

By promoting the use of native plants through financial incentives, Florida can take a step toward sustainable water management practices.

Furthermore, native plant species offer benefits by supporting local wildlife populations. Native plants are a crucial source of food, shelter, and habitat connectivity for various native species.

By creating a network of native vegetation, Florida can increase biodiversity and combat the negative effects of urbanization on native wildlife. As urban areas expand, natural habitats diminish, posing significant threats to the survival of many species.

However, incorporating native plants into urban landscapes provides vital refuges for some wildlife, enabling them to coexist with a growing population.

In conclusion, incentivizing homeowners to adopt native plant species represents a proactive and effective approach to promoting sustainable land use practices by contributing to water and biodiversity conservation.

As Florida continues to confront the challenges posed by population growth and urbanization, initiatives like these are crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for the state’s environment and its inhabitants.

Adam Tahiri, Alonso High School

Adam plans to attend the University of Florida to pursue a degree in finance.

As Florida blossoms into America’s front-runner in population growth, the balance between embracing its burgeoning populace and safeguarding its rich tapestry of natural wonders becomes paramount.

Imagine Florida as a grand tapestry, each thread representing the delicate interplay between human advancement and the preservation of its natural sanctuaries. To protect this masterpiece, Florida must adopt a multifaceted approach.

First, envision urban planning not as a constraint but as an opportunity to weave green spaces into the urban fabric, promoting biodiversity even within city limits. Florida can pioneer the development of eco-cities, where green roofs, urban gardens, and verdant parks become as iconic as its beaches and theme parks.

Next, the state should champion innovative conservation financing mechanisms. Why not introduce a “Nature Bond”? Similar to war bonds, these could mobilize public investment in conservation projects, turning every Floridian into a steward of their state’s natural beauty. The funds raised could restore wetlands, conserve endangered habitats, and maintain public lands.

Education plays a crucial role, too. Florida’s schools can integrate environmental stewardship into their curricula, cultivating a generation that values sustainability as much as innovation. Imagine school projects that partner with local conservation efforts, turning theoretical knowledge into tangible action. Lastly, Florida should leverage technology to monitor and manage its natural resources efficiently. Drones and AI can track environmental changes, predict impacts of urban expansion, and guide policy decisions, ensuring that growth and conservation go hand in hand.

As Florida stands at this crossroads, the path it chooses can serve as a blueprint for harmonizing human and natural coexistence. By intertwining innovation with tradition, and development with conservation, Florida can ensure that its growth enriches both its people and the planet.
