Make sure not to include any new facts in this part but summarize the data you’ve already mentioned in the body paragraphs. Moreover, try to be brief, precise, and concise to finalize your academic paper in the most brilliant way.

Proofread Your Paper  Proofreading and editing are the must-do stages of any academic writing. To avoid any mistakes, inconsistencies, and misprints, it is better to proofread your essay at least a couple of times.

The Art of Gardening

By bobby bostic.

gardening essay writing

The gardener is an artist, a creator, and an architect.

A gardener is an artist because they create their garden in slow motion like a painter trying to get the colors right. A sculpture tries to chisel his work exquisitely. A gardener does the same thing with their garden.

The serenity in the garden sings to their soul.

Like any other form of art, gardening has to be mastered. You learn it as you are being taught. However the garden teaches you, it becomes the teacher. It will reprimand you like a stubborn pupil. If your mind poses a question to the garden, it will not give you a direct answer, rather it will challenge you to discover every dimension of the answer to your question. Once you finally figure it out the discovery will be of a miraculous nature. What is even more is how a garden amazes its creator.

gardening essay writing

When a garden is complete, its creator marvels at its beauty. Looking at it from afar, the gardener wonders how did they themselves create something so wonderful.

All of the marvelous plants of varying colors sprouting towards the sky, pointed towards the sun they seem to want to take flight at minute. Gardens are full of many layers, but each plant has its own unique story to tell. As you sit in the garden listening quietly to your own thoughts, you also hear the story of the garden being whispered to you in a small voice. Gardens are so full of life that you feel so alive in their midst.

At times the toil of laboring in a garden can be intense. Gardening is hard work, yet it is a worthy effort. Therefore people look forward to this work. For the dedicated gardener it becomes sort of a love affair.

Gardening is a work of art, and art takes hard work. When you see a breathtaking painting you know that someone put countless hours of work into its creation. A garden requires even more hours of labor. You have to work with the raw elements of nature. Insects can become either garden's enemy or its friend. As the steward of the garden you try to balance it all out.

gardening essay writing

So many elements of nature give the garden life, yet many other elements of nature attempt to suffocate the garden. Chief among these elements is the weeds. Weeding must be painstakingly done by hand. One has to be diligent while constantly pulling weeds making sure that they do not attempt to choke the life out of the plants you are growing. Look at the painted picture and see all of its layers. It took a lot of master strokes from the painter's hand to get it right. As equally beautiful, the sight of an exquisite garden should stop you in your tracks. Each row had to be nurtured, watered and carefully spaced apart at intervals. Seeds has to be carefully planted, etc. The garden has to get the right amount of light as well as sunshine. So many countless dynamics go into a garden's formation.

Like any other work of art, gardening is its own architecture. It is hand crafted. Designed from scratch, its blueprint is constructed on a parcel of earth. Its construction requires the gardener to take on many roles. Though uneducated in these various fields the gardener puts on the hat of an engineer, an ecologist, a botanist, a poet (a garden is poetic as it sings its own verses), a farmer, a mathematician, a biologist, etc. The science that the gardener learns from each of these disciplines allows them to make their garden into a work of art. A gardening school could never really teach you every facet of the art of gardening. A lot of it is learned through trial and error. Most of what you ultimately discover will be self taught. After you make your mistakes and learn along the way you will become a master of your garden. Once it is complete, it will take your breath away, not only from the hard work but ultimately because of its beauty and tranquility. You will marvel at your garden's beauty. Saying to yourself how beautiful it is, you will know in that moment that you have finally discovered the art of gardening.

Science field journals have been in use for many, many years. In fact, Lewis and Clark were asked to keep a field journal by President Thomas Jefferson. Their journals included detailed observations of the land, plants, and animals they saw. This lesson plan invites students to observe and explore their environment in much the same way. After being introduced to both gardens and field journals by reading picture books, students work together to plant a garden and study its growth using the inquiry process of questioning and exploring. As they research and study, students record their observations in a field journal, to be shared with others—just like Lewis and Clark!

From Theory to Practice

As David and Phyllis Whitin explain in their "Inquiry at the Window: The Year of the Birds," inviting students to observe, comment on, and question the things that they see in the world around them leads to "significant inquiry learning." Their article outlines four ways that a fourth-grade classroom's observation and experimentation of the birds that visited a bird feeder outside their classroom window lead to learning. They discovered with their students that inquiry

"begins with looking closely." "involves really living the lives of scientists." "generates an endless spiral of questions to pursue." "involves a flexible use of various nonfiction resources."

Based on planting a class garden, this lesson plan engages students in similar inquiry learning which can result in a year-long study of plants and flowers, comparisons of living things, and application of the inquiry process to other activities in the classroom.

  • 1. Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.
  • 3. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics).
  • 5. Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
  • 6. Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and nonprint texts.
  • 7. Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and nonprint texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience.
  • 8. Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.
  • 11. Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities.
  • 12. Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).

Materials and Technology

  • Selected books about gardening
  • These can be commercially purchased, a spiral notebook, or a student-created book.
  • You can print blank Stapleless Books and ask students to devote one day of their observations to each page of the book.
  • For a more structured journal experience, create a Flip Book with the desired labels already made for the students. Example labels might be "Day 1, Day 2, etc." or "Drawings, Measurements, Observations, etc." Assemble the books for students to use as they record their observations.
  • Writing and drawing materials
  • Location for a class garden or a windowsill or containers for container gardening
  • Chart paper or Board and writing materials
  • Gardening tools, such as shovels, hoes, seeds, and watering cans
  • Measuring supplies and magnifying glasses
  • Camera (optional)

Preparation

  • Choose an area where a classroom garden may be grown or select a windowsill or containers for the garden.
  • Gather books about gardens and gardening for the classroom.
  • Test the Stapleless Book , Flip Book , Venn Diagram , and Printing Press on your computers to familiarize yourself with the tools and ensure that you have the Flash plug-in installed. You can download the plug-in from the technical support page.
  • For background information and tips, review the American Museum of Natural History's resource on How to keep a Field Journal .

Student Objectives

Students will

  • observe and write about their observations in a science field journal.
  • pay attention to detail in all types of observations.
  • formulate questions that could be researched or that could lead to investigations.
  • seek out answers to those questions through observation, exploration, and research.
  • record and share information learned.

Session One

  • Share a selection from the booklist to introduce students to the topic of gardening.
  • After reading the book, invite students to brainstorm things that they observed about gardening in the reading.
  • Collect their responses on the board or on chart paper.
  • Working from the ideas that students have shared, explain that the class will cultivate a class garden, windowsill garden, or individual container garden.
  • Allow students time to talk about and share their excitement about having a class, windowsill, or container garden.
  • Also provide time for students to browse books on their own.
  • If possible, take a walk and look at gardens in the neighborhood, or go on a field trip to a location where students can explore a garden. Another option is to take a Virtual Tour of The National Arboretum.
  • After the students have had time to explore the books and/or to take a walking field trip, introduce the idea of science field journals to the students.
  • Introduce the idea of field journals as a tool that scientists use to record their observations as they work on a project. You might share a book that shows the use of field notes, such as David Wiesner's June 29, 1999 (of course, your class's experiments will turn out a little different from those in Wiesner's book).
  • Ask students to share what they already know about writing notebooks, reader response journals, math journals, and diaries.
Science field journals are often used to describe inquiries, investigations and experiments. They provide a place for students to record observations and data, as well as make predictions and come to conclusions. In science field journals, students can also draw or write what they already know about the area of study. In addition, students can list questions they may encounter. They can also collect artifacts from what they are studying.
  • In their science field journals, students will be documenting their garden, from beginning to end.
  • What will we grow?
  • What time of year do these items need to be planted?
  • How much sunlight and water do they require?
  • Is there a location that is best for planting?
  • Where will the garden be-in a plot, on the windowsill, or in a container?
  • What materials will we need for the garden project?
  • How will we divide the responsibilities for the garden?
  • What will happen to what we grow in the garden?
  • Invite the students to write their answers in their science field journals.
  • As a class, draw out the garden on the board or on chart paper. Students can include this drawing in their journals as well.

Session Two

  • Once you have decided on the location for the garden and collected the materials, begin planting the items.
  • Together, read the back of the seed packets for instructions, or read any directions on potted plants. Visit the Gardening in Containers Site to learn more about container gardening.
  • When students are done planting, they should record the day's activities in their science field journal. You can ask students to write freely in the journals as an open-ended writing assignment, or you can ask them to respond to the prompt "Describe how and where you planted your seed. Add an illustration of the seed." If desired, the students can also tape or glue the seed packet or label from the potted plant into their science field journal.
  • At the end of every session, invite several students to share what they have documented and recorded in their science field journals.

Session Three, and additional observation sessions as needed

  • What will happen to the seed?
  • What is the first thing we will see?
  • How tall will the plant grow to be?
  • What colors will we see?
  • What if the plant doesn't grow?
  • Write creative stories about gardens and gardening.
  • Write poetry about plants, including cinquains , haiku , and acrostics .
  • Publish a garden newsletter, documenting your progress, using the Printing Press . Distribute the newsletter to other classes, parents, and the community.
  • Write a description of a garden they have seen, focusing on what they liked about it and some of the details they remember about it.
  • Draw what the plants look like as they sprout.
  • Record daily observations, measurements, and comparisons of plants grown under different light conditions.
  • Measure the plants and record their data, perhaps using a class growth chart on the wall.
  • Write about the rates at which the different plants grew and why think they think the growth happened at the pace that it did.
  • Compare the young plants with the mature plant pictures-students can write, draw, or complete a Venn Diagram of their findings.
  • Collect and press a few leaves, flowers, or other finds.
  • Describe other things that live in the garden and talk about their purpose in the garden.
  • Describe the leaves on the plants, considering vein pattern, color, texture, shape, and leaf size.
  • Observe the flowers-list their attributes, dissect the flowers, separate the parts and pieces.
  • Describe the plants using as many of the five senses as possible.
  • Write about a change they noticed in the garden since the last time they observed.
  • Write a description of the garden from the point of view of the root, stem, leaf, or flower of a plant.
  • As questions arise from the observations and experiments, use them as teachable moments by finding the answers together.
  • In case the plants do not sprout, students can observe growing plants online . This site can also be an opportunity for teachers to model how to observe growing plants: "I notice that the leaves are growing from bottom to top."

Final Session

  • At the conclusion of this gardening experience, the journal entries the students write can describe in detail the class's garden-related investigations and experiments.
  • As a culminating activity, students can have a party and serve the food they grew in their gardens, or if non-edible plants and flowers were grown, they can give them away as gifts to other teachers in the school or to organizations such as nursing homes.
  • For a math connection, measure the growth of each plant. Also, calculate the area and perimeter of the garden.
  • Students can work more on the sequence involved in gardening. For additional ideas, refer to this lesson about pumpkins.
  • For an art connection, students can design seed packets, garden signs or garden stepping stones.
  • As an experiment, subject some of the plants to extremes-over water them (to explore floods) or do not water them (to explore droughts). Water some of the plants with salt water, or slowly remove soil to simulate erosion.

Student Assessment / Reflections

Students’ engagement in these inquiry-based observations will be documented in their observation journal entries, class discussion, and their engagement in additional research in books and other nonfiction resources. A basic checklist of questions can focus assessment of the activity:

  • Do students look closely at the garden, plants and flowers? Are they making meaningful observations?
  • Do students write notes about what they see (make factual observations)?
  • Do students share and present their observations to the class?
  • Do students engage in discussion of the observer’s entries?
  • Do students work as scientists in the classroom, questioning and testing their observations and resources?
  • Do students question the facts of their observations and explore the possible conclusions they lead to?
  • Do students consult other nonfiction resources for additional information about their research? How do they work with these resources?
  • Calendar Activities
  • Student Interactives
  • Professional Library
  • Lesson Plans

Some of Fleishman's memories in his essay "My House of Voices" are shared with the class. Students then write a descriptive essay that gives a tour of the voices in their homes, school, etc.

The Stapleless Book can be used for taking notes while reading, making picture books, collecting facts, or creating vocabulary booklets . . . the possibilities are endless!

The interactive Printing Press is designed to assist students in creating newspapers, brochures, and flyers.

This interactive tool allows students to create Venn diagrams that contain two or three overlapping circles, enabling them to organize their information logically.

Paragraph on Gardening

Students are often asked to write a paragraph on Gardening in their schools. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 200-word, and 250-word paragraphs on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

Paragraph on Gardening in 100 Words

Gardening is a fun activity where we grow plants. We can grow different things like flowers, fruits, vegetables, and even trees in our garden. Gardening is like caring for and making a special place for our plant friends to grow. We use tools like a small shovel to dig the soil and make a hole. Then we place a seed or a baby plant in the hole and cover it with soil. We water it regularly and make sure it gets enough sunlight. Over time, the plant grows, and it’s exciting to see. Gardening is a great way to spend time with nature.

Paragraph on Gardening in 200 Words

Gardening is a fun and healthy hobby that you can do in your backyard or even in small pots inside your house. It’s a way to grow your own fruits, vegetables, and flowers. You get to play with dirt, water, seeds, and plants. First, you prepare the soil by breaking up the hard parts with a tool called a trowel or a spade. Then, you plant seeds or young plants in this soft soil. Each type of plant needs different levels of sunlight and water, so it’s important to learn about what each plant needs. It’s exciting to watch your plants grow day by day. When they’re ready, you can eat the fruits and vegetables or enjoy the beauty of the flowers. Gardening is not just fun, it’s also good for you because it makes you active and you can learn a lot about nature. Plus, it is a way to help the earth by growing plants that make fresh air for us to breathe. So, grab a spade, some seeds, and start your own little garden today, because gardening can be a great way to spend your time and make your home more beautiful.

Paragraph on Gardening in 250 Words

Gardening is a fun and rewarding activity that allows us to interact with nature while also beautifying our surroundings. It involves growing and taking care of plants, which can range from flowers and shrubs to fruits and vegetables. This activity not only adds color and life to our homes but also has several benefits. Gardening can help us relax and reduce stress, as it requires our focus and takes our minds off everyday worries. It’s like a workout too, as it involves physical tasks like digging, planting, weeding, and watering. Moreover, if we grow fruits and vegetables, it provides fresh and healthy food that is good for our bodies. It’s always exciting to watch plants grow from seeds and blossom into beautiful flowers or bear tasty fruits. Gardening also teaches us patience, as plants take time to grow and bloom. We learn the importance of caring for other living things and how every plant needs different care. For instance, some plants need lots of sunlight, while others thrive in the shade. Some need plenty of water, while others do better in dry soil. By gardening, we also learn about the different seasons, as some plants grow best in certain times of the year. In conclusion, gardening is a wonderful hobby that benefits us in many ways, making our lives healthier, happier, and more colorful.

That’s it! I hope the paragraphs have helped you.

Essay On Gardening – 10 Lines, Short And Long Essay For Children

Shraddha Mishra

Key Points To Remember: Essay On Gardening For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on gardening for kids, a paragraph on gardening for children, short essay on gardening in english for kids, long essay on gardening for children.

Gardening is one of the activities that can help us stay connected to nature, given our hectic and urban lifestyle. We have great joy when we do gardening because we can see the shrubs and flowers develop from their tender stage until they fully shoot and flourish into their green life. This truly makes us aware of how short life on earth is for all living things. Gardening keeps our daily lives fresh; watering, caring for plants and cleaning the plants make us feel calm and refreshed.

Essays can be a great tool to help your kids understand and appreciate gardening. We have this article to help your child with writing. This article contains an essay on gardening for classes 1, 2 and 3.

There are specific points to keep in mind when writing any essay. Given here are a few pointers to guide you with how to write an essay on gardening:

  • Essays generally follow a format that includes an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
  • For kids, these essays can be written in the form of a single paragraph or point.
  • A good introduction and a strong conclusion are essential for a good essay.
  • Include the benefits of gardening.
  • Touch upon the healthy changes that gardening offers.

Lower primary kids feel easy in writing points for a particular topic. Here is a 10-line gardening essay for classes 1 and 2:

  • Growing, developing, planting, and caring for new plants are all a part of gardening.
  • Plants are a fundamental component of nature.
  • A lovely garden can transform a home’s overall look.
  • Without gardening, the garden would have uncontrollable growth and dense bushes, making it appear unkempt and untamed.
  • Maintaining a garden requires a lot of hard work, but it must be done frequently.
  • Gardening is much more than mere watering.
  • Where necessary, it also entails nipping, pruning, and cutting shrubs and dense foliage.
  • The beauty of the garden itself is a sign of successful gardening.
  • Having a committed and knowledgeable gardener is the first step toward having a garden.
  • Gardening gives you an opportunity to grow your own fruits and vegetables to ensure that the food on your table is healthy.

Now let us look at a paragraph on the topic of gardening. Lower primary children can use this paragraph on gardening to write essays:

Another excellent life lesson passed down through the centuries is gardening. Gardening is a great practical activity. Maintaining a beautiful kitchen garden ensures that you have wholesome, organic food on the table. Planning the garden’s layout and being knowledgeable about the many plants that flourish in diverse environments are prerequisites for gardening. Achieving all of them naturally elevates our mood and brings about mental happiness. Gardens offer a calm, refreshing and stress-free environment. No matter what your age is, gardening is an activity that you must practise. It is also known for enhancing our mental abilities as we engage with nature.

Gardening is a beautiful activity that soothes the mind and soul. This is an essay for classes 1, 2 and 3 on gardening:

The existence of plants is vital for all living beings, especially humans, to survive. Without plants, none of our essential bodily processes, including breathing, eating, and drinking, would be possible. In addition to serving as food sources, plants produce oxygen and support the water table. While many plants thrive in the wild, some plants, bushes, and shrubs are also cultivated and grown by humans in their homes or yards. It is referred to as gardening. While gardening may seem like a hobby to some, it is beneficial and significant to us. It entails physical labour on the part of the gardener to perform tasks like weeding, watering plants, mulching, trellising, and harvesting.

Additionally, gardening is a beneficial pastime. This activity enables you to cultivate your own fruits and vegetables, guaranteeing that the food on your table is wholesome. The human desire for beauty is satisfied by gardening. Working in the garden also improves problem-solving abilities. Researching the most effective gardening techniques, testing various approaches, and creating irrigation systems that work for you all help develop your creative and problem-solving skills.

Kids need to write detailed essays as they reach higher grades. This section covers an essay for class 3 children on gardening:

Gardening is a passion for many, and people treat plants and trees in their garden as their kids. People regularly water crops, spot gardens, root grasses, prepare beds, scatter seeds, and plant trees. They maintain the garden’s cleanliness by working both in the morning and at night. In the garden, taking care of pest crops is crucial. Insects might pose a threat to the crops, and they lay eggs on the fruits, flowers, and produce. Insecticides can be sprinkled on top to kill these eggs. Lime is periodically incorporated into the soil to kill bacteria and pathogens. Consequently, the soil’s fertility rises.

Advantages Of Gardening

  • Benefits To Your Health:  Gardening is a strenuous hobby. There are numerous health benefits of gardening. Further research has revealed that gardening also lowers blood pressure, stress, and depression, as well as cholesterol levels. Studies have even shown that simply gazing at a garden can positively impact one’s heart rate, blood pressure, muscles, and even brain function. It induces emotions of serenity and tranquilly and is generally quite therapeutic.
  • Environmental Advantages:  It is undeniable that humans have had a significant impact on the environment. By gardening, we can lessen and offset this effect. Plants produce fresher and cleaner air by releasing oxygen after absorbing carbon dioxide. Since plants’ root systems keep the soil in place, they help stop soil erosion. You can use rain gardens to collect rainwater and keep pollutants out of lakes and waterways. A well-planned landscape around your home can help keep your place cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, lowering your need for air conditioning by as much as 20%.
  • Increase In Property Value:  From a purely aesthetic standpoint, a well-kept garden raises your home’s curb appeal, increasing the property value. Additionally, it may prompt buyers to submit offers for the property sooner than they would for a typical house.
  • Organic Vegetable Growth:  There are two benefits of growing vegetables in your yard. One advantage is that you are confident of the pesticides and chemicals you use to help the vegetables grow, so you don’t have to worry about them. Second, making the simplest of provisions for yourself and your family gives you tremendous satisfaction.

You will learn more about gardening skills as you go ahead with gardening. As you gain more knowledge, you’ll be able to think of new options for your garden. You can benefit emotionally and physically from gardening, enabling you to put food on your table and contribute to environmental health. Although gardening takes a while to produce effects, those results are more profound and stay much longer.

1. Can Gardening Be A Hobby?

Yes. Growing plants can be a hobby, and it is a fun hobby to engage in, and can be used as a constructive pastime. People do gardening in their free time.

We hope this article helps your children write about gardening and encourages them to include gardening activities in their daily life.

Essay on “My favourite Hobby “Gardening”” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

My favourite Hobby “Gardening”

The small garden in front of my house is the result of my favorite hobby, gardening. Gardening is my favorite hobby. I think, it is the best of all the hobbies which one can follow with a lot of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller garden in front of my house. When I sit in my smaller garden a great pleasure. Sweet fragrant flowers of different hues sweeten as my mind. It helps me in many ways. While working in the garden not only do I spend my time in a better way but also improve my health as thus I spend my time in better way but also improve my health as thus I take exercise unwillingly. It brings me close to Nature and I feel lost like Wordsworth in the beauty of blooms and blossoms around me.

The garden in front of my house is small, no doubt, but even then I am proud of it because it is the result of my own hard labor. There are smaller beds of flowers in which I grow seasonal flowers. When the plants bear blossoms, I feel a thrill of joy in my mind and take pride in my creative labor. Whenever any of my friends asks me anything about sowing and maintaining of plants. I give him information with elated feelings.

Surrounded by the beds of flowers is a smaller lawn with soft velvety green grass. I am very fond of this lawn ad take pride in maintaining it trim, tidy and neat. In the evening we sit in this lawn and talk chat and discuss several things. I have grown fruit fetes along the fringes of the grass lawn. Some of the fruit trees yield fruits but most of them are still young. Whenever any one of my friends comes. I offer him the fruits of my own garden with pride. The grapes, guavas and pomegranates of my garden are very sweet and juicy. Last year I planted a mango sapling which to the surprise of my friends, relatives and even myself, has borne fruit this year. Whenever any visitor comes to my house these days, I very proudly invite his attention to the hardly two feet tall tree that bears the fruit. This little garden is a place where I find peace and happiness.

Essay No. 2

Gardening is not very difficult. It involves preparing the soil, planting vegetables or flowers and paying attention to the garden. Many people make gardening their hobby and it is also a good form of exercise.

The first step in gardening is the preparation of the soil. If the soil is not god, the garden will not flourish. Dig the surface of the earth; then mix the top soil with manure and water. If you are planning a vegetable garden, prepare hedges for different vegetables you hope to plant; however flowers do not need hedges.

The vegetables or flowers that you will plant are often young plants in a water- proof bag. Dig a small hole , place the small plants along with the soil into the ground and cover with the mixed soil. Water the new plant.

After planting, you should pay close attention to your garden. This involves removing the weeds, removing dead leaves around the plants and watering the garden often.

Gardening makes one happy; when one is tired of studying or staying indoors, gardening gives one the opportunity to make light work outside. Moving around in the garden is also a kind of exercise for the body. A garden is also beneficial, as it provides people with flowers and vegetables.

Writing contests, make money writing, hottest topics, how to write gardening articles: tips for gardeners and writers.

' src=

Believe or not, my first published article – and one of the first things I ever had published – was about gardening. There’s a good demand for garden-related bits…. grow your own is back in fashion…. and it’s not too technical, so it’s a good place to get started. Here are a few tips to help you.

This is the most important thing you need to know:

You don’t necessarily need to be that green-fingered to write about gardening. What a lot of gardeners are looking for is ideas and inspiration. And little tips, tricks and secrets that can help them improve their garden without spending a lot of money.

If you’ve done, or are planning, a garden project – like a pond, decking or landscaping for example – you could use that as your starting point. Write up a step-by-step guide to what you did. Include a ‘shopping list’ of items that are required for the project, with estimated costs. Things like this make a project seem more achievable and boost your credibility.

Or, if you know say tomatoes or petunias inside out put some of your own secret tips together. Things that readers are unlikely discover from a regular gardening book. For example, do you have a particular fertiliser that you’ve found works really well? Or do you know a little-known, organic way to get rid of green fly?

Whatever you do, try and make your writing tightly focussed to the subject and aim to put a personal twist on it. This will add real power to your writing:

So who buys garden writing?

As well as gardening magazines try general interest magazines and newspapers too. Some women’s magazines buy garden writing, as do magazines aimed at the over-60s. Try gardening websites.

Consider setting up your own gardening blog as a way to promote your services.

Photos are a great way of adding interest to your garden writing and can even earn you extra money.

Try to focus your photos closely on what you are writing about rather than just having general garden scenes. If you’re writing about a project as I suggested above create a photo ‘how to’ guide with a pic of each main step.

One last thing, remember that gardening is seasonal in most countries so plan ahead.

It’s too late to be thinking about writing on summer gardening themes in the middle of the summer. Think about writing on autumn and winter gardening topics instead, and vice versa.
