It’s been a big few days for Meghan Markle , with the arrival of her daughter, Lilibet Diana , her second child with Prince Harry, and now the much-anticipated release of her debut children’s book.

The Bench , published by Random House Children’s Books, was released on 8 June 2021.

The story is inspired by a poem Meghan wrote for Prince Harry, on his first Father’s Day, just a month after their son Archie was born. Exploring the bond between father and son, from a mother’s perspective, the book reflects on the different ways that love is expressed in a modern family, as well as how their relationship develops as the little boy grows up. And, unsurprisingly, it all revolves around the bench they share together.

Although this is Meghan’s first children’s book, it’s not the first time she’s been published. Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2018, she was involved in Together: Our Community Cookbook , a charity cookbook helping families affected by the fire. As well as supporting The Hubb Community Kitchen and championing the women who set it up, as part of her first solo project since joining the royal family, she wrote the foreword to the recipe book, which raised more than £500,000 for the charity.

The Bench is the latest in a number of new ventures the Sussexes have been involved in since they moved to America, stepping back from royal duties in 2020. But it’s not completely unexpected, with other members of the royal family also trying their hand at writing over the years.

Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York, has made a career of writing children’s books, including Little Red and a series of stories based on the character Budgie the Little Helicopter, which was even turned into a children’s television series in the early Nineties. Perhaps lesser-known, is Prince Charles’ 2017 non-fiction book, Climate Change (A Ladybird Expert Book) explaining climate change in a simplified and accessible way for kids.

Meghan’s The Bench is about as far away as you can get from the Duchess of Cambridge’s photography book, Hold Still . Published in May, the book features 100 images taken by the public during the pandemic, creating a snapshot of Britain in lockdown. Although Hold Still doesn’t feature any of Kate’s own photography, she selected the images and wrote the foreword, similar to Meghan’s charity cookbook.

Here, we take a look at the Duchesses debut work of fiction.

Dedicated to “the man and the boy who make my heart go pump-pump”, The Bench is full of personal references to the Sussexes. The opening illustration of a ginger-haired, bearded man cradling a baby, with two dogs at his feet, bears more than a passing resemblance to Prince Harry. The final pages show the same father feeding chickens with his toddler son, while a dark-haired woman, carrying a baby (surely a nod to the newest member of the Sussexes), walks in the garden, which really feels as though you’re getting a glimpse into the family’s idyllic life at their Santa Barbara home.

The press release reads: “ The Bench gives readers a window into shared and enduring moments between a diverse group of father and sons – moments of peace and reflection, trust and belief, discovery and learning, and lasting comfort.”

The rhyming story clearly comes from the heart, and with lines including “You’ll love him. You’ll listen. You’ll be his supporter,” it’s likely to pull at the heart strings of parents, grandparents and carers. It’s sentimental and a bit of a tear-jerker for adults, but what’s the verdict from the intended audience?

Amazon lists the book as suitable for ages one- to seven-years-old, but when we read the book with a group of children aged two to eight, there were mixed reviews. While the older children enjoyed The Bench – with one saying it made them “feel happy”, the story failed to grab and keep the attention of the younger kids, notoriously a tricky crowd.

As with any picture book, the illustrations are key, and Meghan worked with award-winning illustrator and artist, Christian Robinson, to bring her story to life.

“Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens,” Meghan explained in a press release.

“My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine,” she added.

The painterly illustrations give the book a lot of heart, and it’s clear they’ve worked to make the characters in the book as diverse and inclusive as possible, including fathers of different skin colours, religions and a wheelchair user.

All of our little readers loved the pictures and – granted, it may not have been the overall aim – it was the collection of benches in the inside back and front cover that really held their attention. A lot of time was spent debating which bench was the best – turns out it’s a toss-up between the yellow swinging bench and the green, fancy one, in case you’re wondering…

The verdict: ‘ The Bench’

While it’s unlikely to win any literary awards, or go down in history as a children’s classic, Meghan’s debut picture book is a sweet, calming bedtime read – however, the language and sentiment does feel like it’s aimed more at the adults reading, than the children being read to. We think it has “perfect first Father’s Day gift” written all over it, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, with Father’s Day in the UK and USA falling on 20 June, just a couple of weeks away.

The Bench is available in hardback and is published in the UK, US and Canada. Meghan has also narrated the audiobook version of the story.

Loving ode to father-son bond, seen through mom's eyes.

Positive Messages

"You'll love him./ You'll listen./ You'll be his supporter./ When life feels in shambles,/ You'll help him find order." "He'll feel happiness, sorrow/ One day be heartbroken./ You'll tell him 'I love you.'/ Those words always spoken."

Positive Role Models

All the different dads are loving, attentive, supportive. The father-son pairs have varying skin tones and hair styles. One pair appears to be Sikh, with the dad in a turban and his soccer-playing son with his hair up in a bun. One dad has dreadlocks. Another is in a wheelchair. On one spread, the son wears a tutu over leggings to stretch his leg over the bench in a ballet move, while his dad does the same move wearing a tutu over his pants.

Educational Value

Parents need to know that The Bench is a warm picture book by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, about the special bond between father and child, seen through the eyes of a mom. The text began as a poem she wrote for her husband, Prince Harry of England, for Father's Day a month after their first child, Archie, was born. Caldecott and Newbery-winning illustrator Christian Robinson ( Last Stop on Market Street ) provides tender watercolors of different father-son pairs, of various skin colors, sharing special, everyday moments on various benches. The benches serve as touchstones for the relationship, from places of comfort and sharing to spots to celebrate a sports victory or a soldier dad's homecoming.

What's the Story?

On the title page spread, we see a red-haired, bearded dad walking with his toddler son to THE BENCH where they've gathered since the boy was a baby -- as we'll see on the first spread with text addressed to the dad: "This is your bench/ Where life will begin/ For you and our son/ Our baby, our kin." This dad and son look a lot like Prince Harry and Archie. But from here, we see other dad-son pairs of various skin tones, sitting on various benches as the kids learn and play and grow, put on their shoes, share lunch, wait for the school bus, celebrate a soccer victory, nap, practice ballet, stargaze, etc. One spread shows a son greeting his soldier dad coming home in battle fatigues. The book closes with a spread of the first dad-son pair feeding chickens, with long-haired mom tending plants in the garden, in a setting reminiscent of the author's California home with Prince Harry, son Archie, and daughter Lili.

Is It Any Good?

This sweet celebration of the special bond between father-son bond captures the reality as well as the aspirations to a positive life to come as the boy grows up. The Bench serves as a symbol of the solid, unwavering love that grounds the realationship. "This is your bench/ for papa and son .../ to celebreate joys/ And victories won." But it also acknowledges there will be hard times and tears. "You'll sit on this bench/ As his giving tree,/ Some days he may cry/ Perched there on your knee."

Some of the rhymes seem forced, like "The place you'll call home" with "Where you'll never be 'lone." But the warm, gentle, upbeat vibe and illustrator Christian Robinson's inclusive representation of father-son pairs make the total package charming and relatable.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the small, intimate moments between father and son in The Bench . Is there a special place in your home or yard or a nearby park where you like to talk, play, read books, or put your shoes on with your dad? What makes it feel special?

How is being with dad different from being with mom? Do you do the same things or different things together?

Which picture is your favorite? Does it remind you of a place or something that you experienced in your life?

The Bench review: Meghan Markle’s children’s book is ‘soothing, loving, although a little schmaltzy in places’

The Evening Standard's journalism is supported by our readers. When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex , is having a good week. Following hot on the heels of the birth of daughter Lilibet Diana , is her next baby: children’s book The Bench . Not one to make us mere mortal mothers feel like we’re not doing enough, the book was created around a poem she wrote for her husband for his first Father’s Day with Archie , and suitably, the book dedication (‘for the man and the boy who made my heart go pump pump’), as well a couple of the illustrations, are dedicated to the pair.

With soft rhymes and gentle watercolours about the loving bond between father and son, all rooted around that humble piece of furniture found in every home and park, it’s a metaphorical expansion on the royal-not-royal couple’s guided tour round the chicken coop with Oprah. The thing that tells you, we’re a family, we’re just like everyone else. But this time, in illustrative form, it doesn’t feel so polarising.

The book does feel timely: where many recent pre-school books have been focussed on the essential education around black history and feminist storylines, we’re at a crux point in teaching boys better. This is not simply a book from a (usually white) boy’s point of view, as most were when I was growing up. In telling stories about deep emotional male connection, Meghan is not only modelling emotional openness to young boys and girls, but to their fathers too.

As I leafed through the book with my husband and two and a half year-old daughter, I asked her what she liked about the book. She told me she enjoyed that it was a story about father and son who love each other, and instantly thought that Prince Harry was her own daddy. The fact that young readers of all backgrounds will place themselves in the story is key.

The washy, watercolour illustrations - by Caldecott medal winning American artist Christian Robinson, best known for his book Josephine, about 1920s performer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker - are subtle, emotionally provocative and extensively diverse. They called to my mind popular picture book The Girls, by Lauren Ace and Jenny Lovlie in both their styling and their inclusive range. I especially loved the illustration of the dad and son practicing their high legs against a park bench in tutus, challenging gender conventions, though perhaps in a slighter way than my favourite recent bestseller Julian is a Mermaid.

The Duchess of Sussex ’s writing is soothing, loving, although a little schmaltzy in places, but did at one point bring a tear to my eye (did I mention I’d been up since 5am with my daughter?). Because, while these more emotional rhyming books in our daughter’s library are usually directly written to and about the apple of your eye, this one is written to the parent, as a reminder of all of the joy and learning that child-rearing brings. ‘When life feels in shambles, You’ll help him find order’, reads one line, which spoke expressly to my own frazzled head, but also to the growing anxiety in children.

Meghan Markle’s book “The Bench'

Meghan Markle's Book 'The Bench' Hits Shelves

But the biggest statement to the family the Sussexes have left behind comes from the line ‘You’ll tell him “I love you”, Those words always spoken.’ While Harry’s father Prince Charles famously once said, ‘whatever in love means’ about his new bride Diana, we’re being told that Harry will be telling their children he loves them a million times a day just like the rest of us. And then there I was blubbing, like the mother pictured looking out at the suspiciously Prince Harry-ish dad in his military uniform swinging his child high on an emotional return from duty.

As the book closes, we find ourselves back at the chicken coop. There is that familiar smiling strawberry blonde man, and his toddler son looking up adoringly at him, feeding the birds, a dog lopping behind. The dark-haired mother figure, new baby strapped to her chest is tending to the garden beyond with her back to the reader. The closing line with its abridged ‘lone doesn’t read so well in an English accent as it might do in American, but the sentiment of togetherness does. I for one am looking forward to reading what Meghan has in store for Lil Diana…

Review: the bench.

the bench children's book review

Written by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex and illustrated by Caldecott-winning and bestselling artist Christian Robinson – this story celebrates the bond between father and son.

The simple but elegant illustrations are softened by the use of watercolours. The illustrations convey a sense of reflection - much like having children in our lives. It changes how adults look at the world and their lives.

Depicted from the eyes of the mother, this story was first written as a poem.

The message of diversity and tolerance is evident in this budding relationship as life around you stumbles and grows. The reader is taken on a journey and no matter what happens you will always have support.

Families and parents will resonate with this story of love and support. Our parents are often the rock in our lives and our biggest supporter. When life throws you a curveball, it is always reassuring that we can be who we want to be and know the one sure thing is our anchor (bench).

This simplistic but elegant story has many layers. It highlights we can be true to ourselves and trust in the parent/child bond or in this case father/son bond. This bond gives us courage and strength. This is the perfect book to sit in your favourite space and read with your child.

The Bench is a picture book published on June 8, 2021, by Tundra Books, an imprint of  Penguin Random House Canada.

It celebrates the bond between Meghan's husband Prince Harry and son Archie and fathers and sons in general.

Meghan's rhyming narrative is complemented by illustrator Christian Robinson's watercolour images, showing families of backgrounds, from a soldier returning home (Harry served in Afghanistan) to a man in dreadlocks, from a boy carrying a soccer trophy to a boy and his father wearing pink tutus.

Fathers are seen as buddies, teachers, consolers and cheerleaders.

the bench children's book review

Random House called the book a portrait of "the special relationship between fathers and sons, through a mother's eyes." The image of the bench serves as a symbol of stability and comfort, starting with a drawing of Harry holding his baby son on a bench, two dogs nearby.

Meghan's opening stanza:

This is your bench Where life will begin For you and our son Our baby, our kin

The book jacket describes Meghan as "a mother, wife, feminist, and activist," committed to "activating compassion in communities across the world. She currently resides in her home state of California with her family, two dogs, and a growing flock of rescue chickens."

In announcing The Bench  in May , she said it began as a Father's Day poem written a month after Archie's birth, in 2019.

"That poem became this story," said Meghan, who dedicated the book to "the man and the boy who made my heart go pump-pump."

Publication of The Bench  comes four days after the birth of the couple's second child, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, named in part for Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose family nickname is Lilibet, and his late mother, Princess Diana.

the bench children's book review

Meghan was pregnant with Lilibet while working on the book. The final illustration shows Harry and Archie, now a toddler, at the family's chicken coop. Meghan is in the garden on the opposite page, wearing a sun hat, holding an infant in a sling.

Her final stanza:

Right there on your bench The place you'll call home With daddy and son Where you'll never be 'lone

The British press so far has offered a mixed verdict on her book. The Telegraph said "The Duchess of Sussex's semi-literate vanity project" while the Evening Standard called her writing "soothing, loving, although a little schmaltzy in places."

"The biggest statement to the family the Sussexes have left behind comes from the line 'You'll tell him "I love you," Those words always spoken,'" reviewer Emily Phillips wrote in the Evening Standard.

"While Harry's father Prince Charles famously once said, 'whatever in love means' about his new bride Diana, we're being told that Harry will be telling their children he loves them a million times a day just like the rest of us."

Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018. They left their royal duties in 2020 and now live in Los Angeles.

Since ending their royal duties, Harry and Meghan have continued charity work, have signed TV and other media deals and launched a podcast in December 2020.

The Bench  is the second book Meghan has worked on.

In 2018, she worked on and wrote the foreword to  Together , a cookbook compiling recipes from survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire in London. In the aftermath of the fire, several women came together at the Hubb Community Kitchen to share recipes, find community and restore hope. Meghan became involved in the group, and the cookbook serves as a fundraiser for the kitchen.

Book Review: The Bench by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

The bench by meghan the duchess of sussex.

Just days after giving birth to her baby daughter Lili, Meghan Markle has released her first children’s book. The Duchess of Sussex has penned a touching ode to the special bond between a father and son, as seen through the eyes of a mother.

The Bench explores the many ways that a father and son relationship can be nurtured, and how their love can be expressed through changing interactions. And in many of the illustrations, it appears that art is imitating life, with a son and father who look very much like Prince Harry and Archie.

Best selling illustrator Christian Robinson has worked with watercolour for the first time to bring the story to life.

“The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” said Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex. “That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

Within a week of being released, Meghan Markle's children's book "The Bench" is a New York Times bestseller .

As Insider previously reported , the picture book is about a father-and-son bond as seen through a mother's eyes.

The book started as a Father's Day poem for Prince Harry but turned into a book filled with "moments of love and shared experiences between a diverse group of fathers and sons," according to Archewell , the organization the Duke and Duchess of Sussex founded in 2020 and named after their first child, Archie.

Markle's book quickly earned its spot as No. 1 on the New York Times' list of bestselling children's picture books. In celebration, a letter was published on Archewell's website thanking readers for their support.

"While this poem began as a love letter to my husband and son, I'm encouraged to see that its universal themes of love, representation, and inclusivity are resonating with communities everywhere," Markle writes in the letter.

"In many ways, pursuing a more compassionate and equitable world begins with these core values," the letter continued. "Equally, to depict another side of masculinity — one grounded in connection, emotion, and softness — is to model a world that so many would like to see for their sons and daughters alike."

The book, which was illustrated by Christian Robinson, was released on June 8 in partnership with Random House Children's Books in the US; Tundra Books in Canada; and Puffin in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa.

Markle started writing the book two years ago in June 2019, shortly after her son Archie was born in May .

The book features watercolor illustrations that aim to resonate "with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine," Markle said in a press release .

Throughout the book, readers will spot Harry and Archie feeding family chickens at their home in Montecito, California. Readers will also catch a glimpse of Markle and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, the couple's first daughter who was born on June 4 , in the pages of the book.

"Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life," Markle previously said .

"This representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens."

Introducing Meghan, duchess of Sussex and writer of children’s books.

The former actress’ literary debut, titled “The Bench” and illustrated by Christian Robinson, is set to hit shelves June 8. The book, inspired by the father-son bond between her husband and son, Archie, is based on a Father’s Day poem Meghan wrote for Prince Harry a month after welcoming their baby in 2019.

In a statement released Tuesday, Meghan elaborated on her inspirations for the project, as well as her admiration for Robinson, a Los Angeles-bred artist based in Sacramento who received Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Illustrator honors for his work on 2015’s “Last Stop on Market Street.”

“Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life,” read the duchess’ statement.

“[T]his representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

A book cover has a watercolor illustration of a tree and a bench and small birds.

The high-profile title will be released by Penguin Random House imprints Random House Children’s Books in the United States and Tundra in Canada, as well as by Puffin in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa. An audio version of the story, narrated by Meghan, will also be available.

“Meghan’s touching text explores the relationship between fathers and sons and undeniably tugs at the heartstrings that parents and caregivers feel,” said Mallory Loehr, publisher of the Random House Books for Young Readers Group, in a statement.

“Christian’s art beautifully matches the tender emotion of Meghan’s words, and every spread is infused with a vibrant sense of joy and love. The Bench is timeless — it feels destined to become one of those books that people will be reading for generations to come.”

The Duchess of Sussex is releasing her first children's book, The Bench

Meghan's debut will explore the special bond between father and son, as seen through a mother's eyes, and was inspired by Prince Harry and Archie.

Meghan Markle has written her debut children's book to be published next month, it has just been revealed.

The Duchess of Sussex's new book is called The Bench , with a release explaining that it will explore the special bond between father and son, as seen through a mother's eyes.

Meghan's book was inspired by her own husband and son, Prince Harry and young Archie Harrison, who turns two on 6 May.

The release reads: "The Duchess of Sussex’s debut touchingly captures the evolving and expanding relationship between fathers and sons and reminds us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family."

Meghan's book is illustrated by Caldecott-winning and bestselling artist Christian Robinson, and will be published by Puffin, an imprint of Penguin Random House Children’s UK, here in the UK. Meghan will also be narrating the audiobook edition of her book.

Describing the book, the release says: "Evoking a deep sense of warmth, connection, and compassion, The Bench gives readers a window into shared and enduring moments between a diverse group of fathers and sons — moments of peace and reflection, trust and belief, discovery and learning, and lasting comfort."

The illustrations by Christian Robinson are in watercolour, and aim to "bring joy and softness to the pages, reflecting the beauty of a father’s love through a mother’s eyes", it continues.

Speaking about her debut in the release, Meghan says: " The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born.

"That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

The publisher has already given a sneak peek at both the book cover and two interior spreads, one of which sweetly depicts a red-headed father in military uniform with his young son, perhaps inspired by Prince Harry's own career in the armed forces. How lovely!

The Bench will be released on 8 June, and we reckon it would make the perfect present for dads ahead of Father's Day!

Congratulations to Meghan on this exciting new project!

Meghan Markle Wrote a Children’s Book—Here’s Everything We Know About The Bench

Meghan Duchess of Sussex is presented with a book called Grandma Wombat by school children at South Melbourne Beach on...

Come June 8, you may see a familiar name at your local bookstore: Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Today, she announced the release of her new children’s book, The Bench . Published by Random House and illustrated by Caldecott-winning artist Christian Robinson, The Bench tells the story of the bonds between fathers and sons, as described by their mothers.

The concept came to the duchess on Father’s Day of 2018—Harry’s first as a dad, and an emotional milestone for any young family. Meghan decided to put her feelings from that day down on paper. “ The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” the Duchess of Sussex says. “That poem became this story.”

It was important for Meghan and Robinson that The Bench feature families from all walks of life. Illustrations shared from the book, for example, show a young boy overjoyed by the return of his military father. In another, a Black child naps peacefully on his father’s chest, clutching a stuffed giraffe. “This representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens,” the duchess says.

That perspective is inevitably important to the many, many multicultural households across America. The children’s book industry has a noted lack of diversity: According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Cooperative Children’s Book Center, only 30% of titles in 2020 featured racially diverse characters. “My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine,” Meghan says.

It’s just the latest project for the duchess, who, since stepping down from the royal family in early 2020, has undertaken several creative projects. She and Harry inked high-profile deals with both Netflix and Spotify. Then in November, she wrote an op-ed for The New York Times about suffering a miscarriage, and the subsequent grief that followed.

Meghan and Prince Harry are expecting a second child, a daughter, this summer.

'the dictionary story' is a kids' book that defies definition.

Samantha Balaban in the field.

Samantha Balaban

2.jpg

Have you ever read a children's book where the main character is… the book?

Dictionary has noticed that even though her pages contain all the words that exist, she doesn’t really tell a story like all the other books on the shelf do. So one day, Dictionary decides to change that and bring her contents — guts? pages? definitions? — to life.

A hungry alligator bursts out of the pages ready for a snack — and finds a donut several pages later. But Donut doesn’t particularly want to be eaten, so he rolls off further into the alphabet. Alligator gives chase and the story soon goes off the rails — they crash into Queen who slips on Soap. And that’s all before Tornado shows up! Definitions go flying, no one is in the right place. Can Dictionary put herself back together again?

"It's a book about chaos. Chaos and order. Fine line," says Oliver Jeffers who — along with Sam Winston — wrote and illustrated The Dictionary Story. The two previously worked together on 2016’s A Child of Books (where the main character is a child, not a book). They’ve been working on The Dictionary Story pretty much ever since.

"But not working on it full time, seven years total" clarifies Oliver Jeffers. “Maybe if you were to add it all up, I don't know. I don't even want to think about that.”

(Sam Winston likes to joke that they knocked this one out in a week but he’s very much kidding — this book took work ).

3.jpg

For example, how do you make a book into a character that the children and adults reading the book can have a relationship with? "It was a real challenge because we had to literally make a book," explains Sam Winston. Luckily, his partner Haein Song is a bookbinder . "We had her literally make us two physical copies, which we then photographed and drew on and aged and then distressed in different ways." While the prop dictionary starts out all nice and new, by the end of the book she’s looking very beat up. "But it’s told a pretty wild story," says Winston.

Haein Song also sent Jeffers the paper that she used to bind the dummy book. "She sent enough of that to me that I was able to do the paintings on the same paper. So it looked seamless," Jeffers explains. Then he scanned the sheets of paper with his illustrations on them. The end result is a combination of photography, painting, ink handwriting, and typography, for the dictionary definitions.

In This 'Alphabet,' 'O' Is For Helpful Owl And 'C' Is For Escapist Cup

Author Interviews

In this 'alphabet,' 'o' is for helpful owl and 'c' is for escapist cup.

"It looks like a real dictionary," says Jeffers. "But if you pay close attention, you'll see that all of the definitions have been rewritten." Like:

zero /ˈzɪərəʊ/ Zero is a word that means nothing . Nothing is a word that means nothing . Even though zero is a different word for nothing , both mean nothing . This definition has just told you nothing .

miracle /ˈ mɪr.ə.kl / Something that is amazing or magical for which there seems to be no scientific or common-sense explanation. Often associated with finding a parking space or getting homework done.

The definitions are not not true, but they are a little sideways.

The Dictionary Story

The Dictionary Story Copyright © 2024 by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston hide caption

As the characters in the book — like puddle /ˈpʌd.əl/ A small pool of water. Puddles are often made by rain and they love to look up at the sky — come to life (and, in Puddle’s case, make friends with Ghost), they disrupt the text on the page. Puddle, who Cloud made by crying, soaks through the definition for "power." Alligator makes a hole in the "a"s as he escapes from inside the book. When Queen slips on Soap, some of the "s" words go tumbling off the page entirely. Letters end up out of order, or jumbled up in a pile. Definitions are in the wrong column. Sentences go all wonky.

"The idea behind the book is that you’ve got this very rigid structure," Sam Winston says, of a typical dictionary. "So where some of the humor and the playfulness and the fun comes from is that this is a book doing something it shouldn’t do." Essentially, coming alive.

And to circle back to why it took Winston and Jeffers so many years to make this book: there’s not much software designed to do this in the way they needed it to be done. "Imagine a column of type in a newspaper accidentally becoming a waterfall of type," says Winston. "Everything gets knocked off its grid and its axis and out that waterfall emerges, say, a crocodile."

From 'F-Bomb' To 'Photobomb,' How The Dictionary Keeps Up With English

From 'F-Bomb' To 'Photobomb,' How The Dictionary Keeps Up With English

You'll probably never see that in a newspaper — or a normal, boring dictionary — because that is not what publishing software typically does. "We have all of these typographic structures that are not meant to be bent and then to bend them is like cutting out thousands of single letters and then sticking them back on the page," Winston says.

There was a lot of back and forth to get to the finished product — a lot of half completing drawings and half writing definitions, and then a lot of destroying an illustration and or a definition and sending it back again.

4.jpg

"It's a dance," says Sam Winston. "But you know, we like it. There's a lot of trust in the room, so we have fun."

And, by the way, the story itself is fun. While a lot of thought and work and planning went into making it, at its heart The Dictionary Story is just a good old fashioned chase story with a lot of chaos and a heartwarming ending (can Dictionary put herself back together? Maybe with a little help from some friends!)

"I think what you're looking at when you see these books are two individuals who have a deep respect for storytelling and the physical objects of books. Having fun together and playing well together and sharing that with the world," agrees Oliver Jeffers. "It's a pure joy."

The Seamaiden’s Odyssey

Berlie Doherty and Tamsin Roswell

Dive into this magical, mysterious tale and you won’t want to come up for air until the last page has turned!

The Seamaiden’s Odyssey is a stunning new fable from twice Carnegie Medal-winning author Berlie Doherty... a truly fantastical tale that draws on the folklore of ocean and landscape to create a magical coming-of-age novella for the modern era.

Brought to glorious life by artist, historian and broadcaster Tamsin Rosewell, whose powerful ink and silhouette illustrations brighten the tale with a vibrant but classical language of visual storytelling, this delightful book is a celebration of self-discovery and sisterhood.

When a strange and beautiful sea creature is brought into the marine sanctuary where Sasha works, the sea-girl is kept as an exhibit and for scientific research. But Sasha wants to know more about her... are there more of her kind, what sort of community does she come from, and does she have a family? There is a story to be told... in exchange for a promise. It is a story of cruelty and grief, of love and longing and pride... the story of Merryn who makes a traumatic journey from sea to land, and from defiance to finding her true self and the power of sisterhood.

Using both her imagination and writing skills, Doherty weaves the traditional into recognisable modern themes while Rosewell draws on the long heritage of silhouette and paper-cut work for her inspiration and adds it to her well-known boldness with colour and structure. A magical and unforgettable sea odyssey framed in a pictorial symphony of blue, gold and green...

As vacations wrap up and classes resume, trade in those sandy beach reads for more ambitious fare this fall. If you’re desperate for a break from politics — it is an election year, after all — look for dispatches from the mind of Orhan Pamuk, the latest humanistic work from Yuval Noah Harari and tell-alls by Connie Chung, Alex Van Halen and Lisa Marie Presley. If you’d rather lean into the political season, you might pick up biographies of John Lewis and Mitch McConnell or memoirs by Ketanji Brown Jackson, Alexei Navalny and Angela Merkel. Ta-Nehisi Coates returns with an essay collection on collective mythmaking, and an alarming account by Porter Fox warns of coming superstorms. Find these and others among our most anticipated nonfiction books of the fall.

See our fiction and poetry picks .

The cover of “Lovely One” is a photograph of Ketanji Brown Jackson wearing a yellow jacket over a gray shirt, with a large gold dragonfly brooch on her chest. She is smiling and looking off to the right.

Lovely One , by Ketanji Brown Jackson

Jackson made history in 2022, when she became the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. Her memoir, named for the English translation of her name , traces not only her personal history but also that of her family, who endured generations of oppression in the segregated South.

Random House, Sept. 3

Category Five , by Porter Fox

A travel writer whose previous books explored shrinking snowpacks and the United States-Canada border , Fox is also a seasoned sailor. So it makes sense that his new book, which investigates why storms worldwide are becoming increasingly extreme, starts at sea. “A deep ocean storm does not pass overhead,” he writes. “It absorbs everything beneath it: islands, coastlines, boats, the sea itself.”

Little, Brown, Sept. 3

WEATHER ALERT

A flash flood warning in effect for Medina County

What are your kids reading state lawmakers want to know, texas schools face scrutiny over explicit library books.

Patty Santos , Reporter

Alex Gamez , Photojournalist

SAN ANTONIO – Texas lawmakers in 2023 passed HB 900 the READER Act , which restricts explicit and adult related education resources in public school libraries. The law requires books vendors to rate materials.

School districts are required to recall books that are deemed explicit. Some districts are doing better than others in their transparency with the books.

A group of parents have been showing up to school board meetings to ask districts to have more oversight. Some of them showed up at the North East ISD board meeting in the spring.

NEISD Director of Library Services Terri Sanchez said the library has a process in which it works with vendors to provide professional reviews for books. But with thousands of books already on the shelves, some books that may have been OK in the past might still be on the shelves.

“A little bit of material that maybe we might have been more cautious about. But then, because of the literary value of the book, overall books stayed in the collection. Now, if there’s any material in there that’s explicit, we we have to remove those materials,” Sanchez said.

“I can’t say that we have a perfect system because, you know, we have millions of books in our collection. But we do our absolute best,” she said. “As I’m made aware of books, that are of concern or our librarians are made aware, you know, we, there’s dialog, emails are sent, and we contact each other and make sure that we take a second look at those books.”

Sanchez said books that are out of date, or no longer relevant are routinely “weeded out” as part of a process to keep the shelves fresh.

On the district’s website there’s a link to the Transparency in Libraries tab , where parents can submit complaints about books they have concerns about and see their child’s check-out history. There’s also an “Opt-out” form that parents can fill out to prevent their child from checking out books they deem inappropriate. There’s also a link to see how many books have been challenged since 2007. Only one book was challenged, “Black Boy Joy,” which was removed from elementary schools.

Sanchez said parents with questions are encouraged to reach out to the school’s librarian or her office directly.

Northside ISD officials said they have a process to weed out books, too, but they did not provide a number of how many have been removed. Here’s a statement they sent to KSAT regarding book transparency:

Our Guidelines for Selection, Evaluation, and Reconsideration of Library Materials states, “Operational responsibility for the selection of library materials is assigned to the Director of Library Services and the school librarian on each campus.

Our librarians routinely assess their collection and remove items based on age, usage data, etc. And, occasionally a campus librarian might look at a book in their collection and realize that, despite our best efforts to ensure that we’re ordering age-appropriate materials, it doesn’t align with our selection guidelines. That’s part of our collection development process. These types of collection development decisions are not tracked.

We prefer to take concerns about books through the reconsideration process which includes convening a committee of educators and parents. That process gives our community a voice and ensures that we are following the policies we have in place. In the past two years, we’ve had action taken on 3 titles after parents requested the reconsideration of a library material maintained in a Northside ISD Library. Those three titles are below:

All Boys Aren’t Blue - Johnson, George M. - Remove

The Leak - Petty, Kate Reed - Remove ES, retain MS and HS

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - Andrews, Jesse - Remove MS, retain HS”

SAISD pointed to its online district website where parents can see the Library Catalog. Officials said the purchasing of books is done by certified librarians with the use of professional reviews.

Due to Rightsizing , SAISD removed more than 111,000 books from 15 schools that were closed. The books that are weeded out from libraries are due to the following reasons.

  • Condition - The book may be a newer book but in very poor condition.
  • Relevancy - The book is no longer relevant to the reader. This applies to both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Redundancy - Due to rightsizing, books may be weeded as there are too many copies of a book.
  • Lost - Books may be weeded from the overall collection once they are lost.

SAISD said in a statement, “We have not had any books challenged through a formal process in the past two years. Parents can ask for a reconsideration of a book in the library through both an informal and formal process.”
