The 2022 Warby Parker Impact Report is a great example of how documents can look beautiful and not be boring in the least. Taking a cue from magazine layouts, this annual report is long and includes a visual table of contents to orient the reader accordingly. Title pages are bold, blue and impactful; all the photos are strikingly beautiful; and the text uses a sans serif font that’s easy to read and looks crisp over the white background.

Belong To is an NGO for LGBTQ+ youth in Ireland and its 2022 annual report is a magic combination of color and excitement. This annual report example is in horizontal presentation format instead of the regular document layout and it works great for them. Each section has its own color, making it easier to skim and read. The impact pages are designed with numbers and text in many fonts and colors; usually a design no-no, but in this case, it works

The 2022 Domino’s annual report has over 100 pages but starts off with full-page visuals between financial highlights and a letter to shareholders. This report is a digital PDF hosted on a website and the table of contents includes hyperlinked section titles for easy navigation. The text is a small serif font with a short line height in order to fit as much text as possible on each page.

The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) annual report for 2022 is a visual masterpiece of full-page images, square color frames and punctual white text over a turquoise background. In accordance with the year of the tiger, the content in the report speaks of how WWF is working to bring tigers back into the Nepalese wild. Other sections speak of blue macaws, nature-positive seascapes, wind energy and forest conservation.

1. Always Start With an Outline

The total number of students who appeared was 35 of which 05 passed with 90% and above, 11 above 80% and 09 above 60%. The school gained cent percent results.

Academic Activities:

Competitions and academic activities that go beyond the text books and the classrooms encourage and foster a healthy and competitive spirit and effective communication skills in the students. The activities are conducted at classroom level, school level and inter-house level. Some of these events are handwriting, essay, speech and slogan writing competitions. Competitions are also held for Poetry recitation, story writing and narration, debate, English and Hindi elocution, GK, IQube andMaths quiz competitions. Prizes are awarded during school assembly.

Science, Maths and English Olympiad are conducted every year and the students perform excellently at the local as well as National level.

Reading Day was made memorable by a book exhibition in the school library. In each class students brought their own books or were given books or magazines to read with the aim to encourage and inculcate the habit of reading.

The school subscribes to various educational and entertainment magazines and periodicals which are available for the students to borrow and read.

Through the school, students are encouraged to subscribe to magazines like Teenager, tic tic life, inspirational quote etc.

Art Integrated Learning has been a hallmark of the school even before the CBSE mandated it as compulsory. An elaborate Art Exhibition is conducted every year which draws a lot of attractions and students willingly contribute to its success.

Some of these events are Fancy Dress Competition, Flower arrangement, card making, Best out of waste, poster making, chart making as well as dance competitions. Food festivals were also conducted in the Winter carnival. Participation by the students and teachers in these events was very commendable.

It is said that you must practice like you never won and perform like you have never lost.

Games and Sports Competitions:

When students are physically fit, they will achieve more academically. Games and sports develop a sense of friendliness among the children and also build their team spirit. It helps children to develop mental and physical toughness. Bearing this in mind, the school provides ample opportunities for students to perform regular exercises and yoga, and to play and prove their mettle in various sports and games. Many students have participated in various events like: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, boxing, Karate, Martial Art, Skating etc and have won laurels at the school.

Unique Events:

Suryadatta National School students actively participated in the two unique events endorsed by the “Golden Book of Records” ”.  – “Lining the Map of india with 1100 Tulsi Saplings” and “25 hours of Relay singing of Patriotic Songs –  Kavyathon 2019”.

Celebrations:

Life is a celebration. We just need persons to celebrate it.

To foster national integration, international understanding, religious and cultural awareness and tolerance, various national, religious and cultural festivals and occasions were celebrated with due pomp and grandeur.

• National Festivals: Independence Day, Republic Day, and Kargil Vijay Divas were celebrated with due reverence for our motherland with patriotic songs and dances.
• School Celebrations : Investiture Ceremony was celebrated in a befitting manner and responsibilities were given to tall the elected students to develop the sense of Leadership
• Religious Festivals : All religious festivals like Ramzan Eid,  Muharram,  Diwali, Ganeshotsav, Parsi New Year, Buddha Pornima, Easter, Guru Nanak Jayanti etc are celebrated throughout the year with due respect to the religious sentiments of our students.
• Other Celebrations : The school gives due recognition to significant global events and celebrate these days. Some of these events are International Women’s day, International Workers Day, Hindi Divas, Yoga Day, Onam, World Peace Day, World Hunger Day, Shivaji Jayanti, Road Safety Day, Save our Planet Day, Girl Child Day, Science Exhibition etc.

Field trips area part and parcel of imparting practical lessons in SNS. We conduct various Field Trips from Garden to Malls, from Factories to Orphanages to give students the exposure to learn from the first hand experience.

Edu Socio Initiatives :

Since its inception, Suryadatta National School has been regularly organizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. As part of the program, Suryadatta have reached out to thousands of fellow citizens, and supported them by providing training, opportunities for livelihood, and motivated them for a good and purposeful life.

AUSTIN, Texas – The former Uvalde schools police chief was indicted over his role in the slow police response to the 2022 massacre at a Texas elementary school that left 19 children and two teachers dead, the local sheriff said Thursday.

Pete Arredondo was indicted by a grand jury on 10 counts of felony child endangerment/abandonment and briefly booked into the county jail before he was released on bond, Uvalde Sheriff Ruben Nolasco told The Associated Press in a text message Thursday night.

The Uvalde Leader-News and the San Antonio Express-News reported that former school officer Adrian Gonzales also was indicted on multiple similar charges. The Uvalde Leader-News reported that District Attorney Christina Mitchell confirmed the indictment.

Mitchell did not return phone and email messages from The Associated Press seeking comment. Several family members of victims of the shooting did not respond to phone messages seeking comment.

The indictments make Arredondo, who was the on-site commander during the attack, and Gonzales the first officers to face criminal charges in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. A scathing report by Texas lawmakers that examined the police response described Gonzales as one of the first officers to enter the building after the shooting began.

The indictments were kept under seal until the men were in custody. It was unclear when Arredondo’s indictment would be publicly released.

Over two years ago, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a fourth grade classroom, where he remained for more than 70 minutes before officers confronted and killed him. In total, 376 law enforcement officers massed at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, some waiting in the hallway outside the classroom, even as the gunman could be heard firing an AR-15-style rifle inside.

“Today is another day in an impossibly painful journey," state Rep. Joe Moody, who helped the state lawmakers investigation, posted on the social platform X. “The hurt for them will never subside. Today, I pray that there is justice and some sense of closure for them in this process rather than prolonged suffering.”

The office of a former attorney for Arredondo said they did not know whether the former chief has new representation. The AP could not immediately find a phone number to reach Gonzales.

Arredondo lost his job three months after the shooting. Several officers involved were eventually fired, and separate investigations by the Department of Justice and state lawmakers faulted law enforcement with botching their response to the massacre.

Whether any officers would face criminal charges over their actions in Uvalde has been a question hanging over the city of 15,000 since the Texas Rangers completed their investigation and turned their findings over to prosecutors.

Mitchell’s office has also come under scrutiny. Uvalde city officials filed a lawsuit in 2022 that accused prosecutors of not being transparent and withholding records related to the shooting. Media outlets, including the AP, also sued Uvalde officials for withholding records requested under public information laws.

But body camera footage, investigations by journalists and damning government reports have laid bare how over the course of over an hour, a mass of officers went in and out of the school with weapons drawn but did not go inside the classroom where the shooting was taking place. The hundreds of officers at the scene included state police, Uvalde police, school officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

In their July 2022 report, Texas lawmakers faulted law enforcement at every level with failing “to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety.” The Justice Department released its own report in January that detailed “cascading failures” by police in waiting far too long to confront the gunman, acting with “no urgency” in establishing a command post and communicating inaccurate information to grieving families.

Uvalde remains divided between residents who say they want to move past the tragedy and others who still want answers and accountability. College of engineering, afroze wins best presentation at jump 2.0 supreme annual review.

The third-year ECE Ph.D. student was recognized for her research on improving memory robustness at high temperatures.

Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) third-year Ph.D. candidate Nashrah Afroze won the Best Presentation Award at the Superior Energy-efficient Materials and Devices Center’s (SUPREME) Annual Review on June 11-12 in Cambridge, Mass. on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She won the award for her research, "Interface Engineering for High-Performance Memories at Elevated Temperatures," which aims to improve memory robustness at high temperatures.

Emerging memories are essential for AI applications due to their substantial memory demands. These memories must function reliably at elevated temperatures, such as high bandwidth memory operating at 105 degrees C, monolithic back end at 125 degrees C, and automotive applications at 160 degrees C.

Ensuring robustness at these high temperatures is crucial for maintaining performance and reliability.

At the event, Afroze demonstrated an interface engineering method to enhance the robustness of these memories at elevated temperatures, ensuring their effectiveness under realistic temperature conditions.

“Attending the JUMP 2.0 SUPREME annual meeting in Cambridge was truly remarkable,” Afroze said. “Engaging with top semiconductor researchers from both academia and industry was incredibly inspiring. I'm grateful for the insights and connections gained, shaping my vision for future advancements in technology.”

The SUPREME center, led by Cornell University, is one of the seven Joint University Microelectronics Program (JUMP) 2.0 academic research centers co-sponsored by Semiconductor Research Corporation’s (SRC).

It aims to demonstrate the basic materials and technology breakthroughs needed to address the seismic shifts identified by the semiconductor community in the Decadal Plan for Semiconductors.

Afroze is a third-year Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of ECE associate professor Asif Islam Khan , who is part of the SUPREME Center team.

Her research interests encompass a comprehensive study of ferroelectric memories, from microstructure analysis to electrical characterization, aiming to advance the understanding and application of the ferroelectric materials in next-generation memory technologies.

Dear Residents, Fellows, and Students:

It is our great pleasure to invite you to submit an abstract to be included in a electronic poster session at the Mayo Clinic 16th Annual Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Review conference  October 9-12, 2024, at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, Amelia Island, FL.

As part of the course, a poster session for presentation of original research dedicated to the field of Neurology. These may include challenging stroke cases (i.e., case reports) of those encountered in clinical practice. The conference will also review stroke randomized trials, outcome studies, potential practice innovations, stroke monitoring, and stroke center systems-based practice innovation or improvements.

Abstract Eligibility:  Original abstracts that either have or have not been presented at other meetings will be considered for the conference. Abstracts based upon published papers based on stroke will also be considered. Research Competition: Outstanding abstracts will be selected for electronic poster presentations at the 2024 Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Review course.

Research Competition:  Outstanding abstracts will be selected by our course directors for an electronic poster presentation at the course.

Number of Entries:  A participant may be the primary author on no more than two abstracts; however, he or she may be a contributing author on any number of abstracts.

Analysis Suggests 2021 Texas Abortion Ban Resulted in Increase in Infant Deaths in State in Year After Law Went into Effect

Researchers use statistical modeling to estimate infant deaths expected if one of the country’s most stringent state abortion laws had not been enacted.

A study led by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers estimates that infant deaths in Texas increased more than expected in the year following the state’s 2021 ban on abortion in early pregnancy, especially among infants with congenital anomalies. 

The Texas law prohibiting abortions after a fetal heartbeat could be detected—as early as five or six weeks—went into effect September 1, 2021. At the time, the law—Senate Bill 8, or S.B. 8—was the most stringent state abortion law in the country. It did not allow exemptions for congenital anomalies. 

The researchers’ analysis of monthly death certificate data in Texas and the rest of the United States found that between 2021 and 2022, infant deaths in Texas rose from 1,985 to 2,240, a year-over-year increase of 255 deaths. This corresponds to a 12.9 percent increase in infant deaths in Texas versus a 1.8 percent increase in infant deaths in the rest of the U.S. during the same period. The study defines infants as under 12 months old.

The study was published online June 24 in JAMA Pediatrics .

The findings come as more U.S. states enact stricter abortion laws following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, the landmark ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion policymaking to the states.

To approximate the causal impact of S.B. 8, the authors narrowed their analysis to examine changes in the expected number of infant deaths in Texas from March to December 2022—the time period that captures the first set of pregnancies under S.B. 8. The researchers estimate there were 216 excess infant deaths in Texas that would most likely not have occurred from March to December 2022 had the state’s abortion law not been in place. This is equivalent to a 12.7 percent increase above the expected 1,697 infant deaths for this time period. There were 1,913 observed deaths in Texas from March to December 2022.

An analysis of neonatal deaths—deaths in the first 28 days—found similar patterns, with an estimated 145 excess deaths in the post-policy period. These results were not observed in other states.

The new study is thought to be the first to examine how the Texas abortion ban may have impacted infant deaths in the state and is among the first to present evidence evaluating recent abortion bans and pre-viability restrictions. Prior research has shown that states with more abortion restrictions see more infant deaths than those without. The authors note that these earlier studies evaluate fundamentally different and less severe abortion restrictions and primarily examine correlation. 

“Our study is particularly relevant given the June 2022 Dobbs Supreme Court decision that returned abortion lawmaking to states and subsequent rollbacks of reproductive rights in many states,” says Alison Gemmill, PhD, assistant professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health and one of the study’s lead authors. “These findings suggest that restrictive abortion policies may have important unintended consequences in terms of infant health and the associated trauma to families and medical costs.”

For their month-by-month causal analysis, the researchers drew from infant death certificates in Texas and 28 comparison states from 2018 through 2022. They excluded the District of Columbia and several states that had fewer than 10 infant deaths in any month from 2018 to 2022, as the exact counts are not provided in currently publicly available data. The researchers selected March 2022 as the first cohort exposed to the Texas abortion policy because these infants, if born full term, would have been approximately 10 to 14 weeks gestation when the Texas law went into effect in September 2021. Before S.B. 8’s enactment, people would have been able to seek termination in the event a fetal issue was detected during screening prior to 20 weeks gestation. 

In an analysis of cause of death using all 2021 and 2022 death certificate data, the researchers found that Texas had atypical increases in infant deaths due to congenital anomalies, the leading cause of infant death. Infant deaths attributable to congenital anomalies increased 22.9 percent in Texas between 2021 and 2022 versus a decrease of 3.1 percent in the rest of the U.S. during the same period. Another divergent cause of death pattern in Texas was infant deaths from accidents, which increased by 21 percent in Texas versus a one percent increase in the rest of the U.S.

“Our results suggest that restrictive abortion policies that limit pregnant people’s ability to terminate pregnancies, particularly those with fetal abnormalities diagnosed later in pregnancy, may lead to increases in infant mortality,” says Suzanne Bell, PhD, MPH, assistant professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health and one of the study’s lead authors. “These findings make clear the potentially devastating consequences abortion bans can have on pregnant people and families who are unable to overcome barriers to this essential reproductive health service.”

The authors note that the data did not include maternal and clinical characteristics of infant deaths, thus limiting the authors’ ability to explore potential mechanisms behind these findings.

The researchers are currently studying the impact across socioeconomic groups that abortion bans have on live births and infant mortality in Texas and other states that banned abortion following Dobbs .

Is law school worth it? A Juris Doctor (JD) offers high median earnings and a substantial earnings boost relative to a bachelor’s degree in the humanities or social sciences—two of the more common fields of study that lawyers pursue as undergraduate students. However, graduates of most law schools carry substantial student loan debt, which dims the financial returns associated with a JD.

A Law Degree Is No Sure Thing: Some Law School Graduates Earn Top Dollar, but Many Do Not finds that the return on investment (ROI) in earnings and career outcomes varies widely across law schools. The median earnings net of debt payments are $72,000 four years after graduation for all law school graduates, but exceed $200,000 at seven law schools. By comparison, graduates of 33 law schools earn less than $55,000 net of debt payments four years after graduation.

Monthly debt payments are based on data from the College Scorecard. Note that these data only include federal student loans and do not capture loans from other entities such as institutions, states, or private lenders.

This dollar figure represents graduates’ annual earnings net of debt payments four years after they graduate from law school. We take debt payments into account in addition to earnings because a significant debt load can offset high earnings.

Student Loan Debt

High debt levels can negatively affect the financial returns of a law degree. Law school graduates accumulate a median of $118,500 in debt in the pursuit of their degree, which translates to high monthly loan payments for graduates of many schools. However, lower earnings and lower debt payments do not necessarily go hand-in-hand: at some institutions where graduates have the lowest earnings, monthly debt payments exceed or match those of graduates from law schools with the highest earnings.

Gender and Race/Ethnicity

Law schools have become increasingly diverse; however, disparities in earnings persist by race/ethnicity and gender. For example, since 2016, women have outpaced men in law school enrollments, accounting for 56 percent of all law school students in 2023. Nevertheless, women are underrepresented in the legal profession: women account for only 39 percent of all practicing lawyers. Additionally, among working lawyers, ages 25–54, the gender pay gap favors men by $28,000: female lawyers earn a median of $113,000 while male lawyers earn $141,000.

Earnings vary by race/ethnicity as well. Asian American lawyers, ages 25–54, have the highest median earnings ($132,000), followed by white ($131,000), multiracial ($125,000), Hispanic/Latino ($113,000), and Black/African American lawyers ($108,000).

Note: This analysis is based on 25-to-34-year-old, 35-to-54-year-old, and 25-to-54-year-old lawyers working full-time, full-year. American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AI/AN/NH/PI) lawyers are not included in this analysis due to small sample size.

Bar Passage

Passing the bar exam is a critical step before law graduates can become practicing lawyers. In 2022, 78 percent of first-time test takers passed the bar exam, and the two-year bar passage rate was 92 percent. Law schools with higher median earnings net of debt payments for graduates generally have higher bar passage rates, while law schools with lower earnings net of debt payments for graduates tend to have the lowest bar passage rates. For example, the first-time bar passage rate in 2022 was 91 percent at law schools where net median earnings exceed $100,000 four years after graduation. By comparison, at law schools where net median earnings are less than $55,000 four years after graduation, the average first-time bar passage rate was 59 percent.

Clarke County school's nurse is State School Nurse of the Year

Meredith Dykes, a registered nurse in the Clarke County School District, recently was named the state’s School Nurse of the Year by the Georgia Association of School Nurses.

The school district also announced that its Public Relations and Communications Office received a dozen awards recently at the National School Public Relations Association annual meeting.

Dykes received the award at the association’s annual conference on Jekyll Island.

Several nurses from across the state were nominated for the award which was selected by a panel of judges from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Kennesaw State University and the nurse’s association, according to a news release from the district.

Dykes is one of more than 30 nurses and clinic assistants working in the school district. She has been a nurse for more than 20 yeas and in the school district for almost nine years.

This past school year, district officials said she spearheaded an effort to bring free vision clinics to students through a partnership with Prevent Blindness Georgia.

Every student in the program is fitted for eyeglasses and receives two free pairs.

“Nurse Dykes is a true asset to our school nursing team,” said Amy Roark, director of school nursing. “She is well deserving of this statewide honor and recognition.”

The communications awards included materials produced as newsletters, videos podcasts, social media and other outlets.

Among the awards the school district received were for press release writing, photography, and a video that was produced in collaboration with CV House Productions on students celebrating Dr. Martin Luther’s King Jr.’s legacy.

Other awards were for its “Better Together” newsletters, the Back-to-School Guide and the Student Art Wall Calendar done in collaboration with Dan Smith.

Cyndee Perdue Moore is the executive director of public relations and communications for the district.

Residence life staff bring EcoVillage LLC and AI presentations to national conference

In June, Kirsten Carrier, assistant dean of campus life and director of residence life, presented at the Campus Home. LIVE! conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hosted by the Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I).

Kirsten Carrier, assistant dean of campus life and director of residence life, presented to a national audience at the annual Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in June. Carrier presented “Tiny House Living: The EcoVillage LLC at Loy Farm” and “Generating New Best Practices with Generative AI”. The AI Session was co-facilitated by colleague Joshua Scacco, Director of Campus Life Operations at Pomona College.

EcoVillage LLC Presentation

Participants learned about the EcoVillage LLC at Loy Farm proposal process and how the LLC integrates with the existing farm and academic initiatives on site. Participants also gained insights on how to potentially kickstart a conversation on tiny house partnerships at their institution.

AI Best Practices in Residence Life

Participants got hands-on with Chat GPT and practiced using it for a few residence life related practices. They also participated in a group brainstorm on other ways they might use AI in current or future work.

For decades, the Supreme Court has been suspicious of litigation under warrant in capital cases. The Court has described last-minute litigation as manipulative and dilatory, a result of gamesmanship by people on death row and their lawyers. With the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, the Court began to extinguish the opportunity to assert death row detainees’ rights against unlawful death sentences and executions. This Article clarifies the importance of the capital stay to the adjudication of death row detainees’ rights and argues that the Court’s hostility to the capital stay has four principal effects: First, the Court’s evisceration of the capital stay moots the substantive rights of those facing execution. Second, it undermines the role of the federal courts to protect the rights of Black, disabled, and other disfavored litigants. Third, it warps the usual jurisprudential development of death penalty law by eliminating merits rulings and breaking new ground on the shadow docket. Finally, it instantiates the Court’s refusal to be bound by law or facts, thereby subverting the rule of the law. The capital stay requires additional theoretical development. This Article lays the foundation for that work.
