If you have ever made a PowerPoint presentation, you already know that you can add a hyperlink to your slides. Google Slides takes linking to a whole new level, allowing you to add links to specific slides in your presentation. With this handy feature, you’ll be able to jump from one slide to another without the hassle of pausing your slideshow just to find something.

Continue reading to find out how to add a link to a specific slide in Google Slides. This guide will also explain how to add a link to a different presentation in Google Slides.

How to Add a Link to a Specific Slide in Google Slides

Knowing how to add a link to a specific slide in Google Slides can be quite handy. For example, with this feature, you can create a link at the end of the presentation that says “Return to the first slide” or something along those lines. If you’re making a huge presentation with over 50 slides, having links that take you back and forth to specific points in the presentation will save you a lot of time. While the author of the presentation can use this linking tool in many ways, it’s also useful for the audience, as it will help them get around the presentation with less effort.

Not only can you add a link to a specific slide in Google Slides, but you can also insert a link that will take you to another Google Slides presentation. There’s no limit to how many links you can add, and you can even edit them.

This feature allows you to create a connection between different slides within the same Google Slides presentation. Here’s what you need to do to add a link to a specific slide in Google Slides:

  • Open Google Slides in your preferred browser.

how to link a powerpoint presentation in google slides

  • Click on the “Apply” button.

The linked word or text will immediately turn blue. You can click on it right away to make sure you added the link successfully. When you click on the link, you’ll see a box with a preview of where the link will take you. Simply select the link in the box, and you will be taken to the slide you chose.

Since this online presentation platform is a part of the Google Docs Editors suite, you won’t be required to save the presentation. Any type of changes made on Google Slides will be automatically saved.

A much faster way to add a link to a specific slide is to highlight the text and right-click on it. You will see the “Link” option somewhere on the drop-down menu. Follow the same steps from the instructions above to complete the linking process. An even faster way to insert a link is to use the shortcut “Ctrl + K.”

Depending on the slide you’re on at the moment, Google Slides will give you a few suggestions. For example, if you’re on the first slide, you will have the option to add a link for the second slide. Similarly, if you want to add a link to the third or fourth slide, you will also have a few recommendations. If you can’t find the slide you want to add the link for, go directly to “Slides in this presentation” under the options.

Once the link is added, it’s relatively easy to customize it. Let’s say you linked the wrong slide, and you want to remove the link altogether. Simply click on the link you’ve just made and select the “Remove link” icon on the pop-up menu. Another option you have is to copy a link without having to use the standard “Ctrl + C” and “Ctrl + V” key combination. Instead, just click on the link and select the “Copy link” icon. These shortcuts save you a lot of time, allowing you to focus on your presentation.

If you have made a mistake, or if you want to change which slide the link will take you to, you can edit it in no time. This is done by selecting the pen icon on the pop-up menu. From this point, you can edit the text the link is attached to and which slide it’s linked to. If you want to insert a new link, don’t forget to click on the “Apply” button.

Google Slides allows you to be creative with your links. For example, you can also attach a link to pictures, diagrams, shapes, or stickers in your presentation, which can be extremely useful for educational presentations made for young learners.

How to Add a Link to a Different Presentation in Google Slides

As mentioned before, you also have the option to insert a link to a totally different presentation on Google Slides. This is a great tool for two presentations that cover similar topics or that are connected in some other way. This is how you can add a link to a different presentation in Google Slides:

how to link a powerpoint presentation in google slides

If you have viewed or edited the other presentation, it should appear in the “suggestions” menu. If it isn’t there, you will have to add the link to that presentation manually. If you’re interested in how you can do this, go through these instructions:

how to link a powerpoint presentation in google slides

That’s all there is to it. This method takes a bit longer, but if you view or edit the presentation where the link should go, it will appear in the “suggestions” menu. You can do this with all your presentations on Google Slides, even those shared with you by other Google users.

Improve Your Google Slide Presentations with the Link Tool

The ability to add a link that will take you to a specific slide in Google Slides is very useful, and it saves you a lot of time when you’re presenting it. With this tool, you can add a link to a word or text and even use it for pictures, diagrams, animations, and various other visual content. You can be as creative and practical as you like with your Google Slide presentations.

How To Add Hyperlinks In Google Slides

First, we must understand how to add a link in Google Slides. Luckily, there are a handful of ways to do so, and you can choose the one you feel more comfortable with when working on your slides. Let’s check them over real quick:

Method 1 - From the menu

Adding hyperlinks in Google Slides the traditional way is super easy.

2.- Click on “Link ,” and a blank bar will open next to the object selected.

3.- Enter the URL of the website or document you want to link to.

4.- Click on “ Apply ”

Your hyperlink will now appear on the slide.

You can also try a shortcut by following these steps:

2.- Right-click on it, select “ Link, ” and a blank bar will appear

3.- Type or paste the URL and click on “ Apply ”

If you’re a fan of keyboard shortcuts, you’ll be happy to learn that there’s a shortcut key for embedding a link in Google Slides.

Hyperlink's Shortcut for Google Slides

1.- First, select the placeholder or object to which you want to add a link.

2.- Then, simply hold “ Ctrl+K ” (the shortcut key for hyperlinks)

2.- Go to the toolbar, and click on the “ Insert Link ” icon

3.- A blank bar will show up next to the element selected

4.- Insert your URL on the bar and click “ Apply. ”

We’ve gone through four different methods to insert a link in Google Slides. To close the basics, there’s one more thing I need to show you.

How Do You Edit A Hyperlink In Google Slides?

Once you add a link to your Google slide, you can copy, edit, or remove it. To access these options, click on the placeholder where you inserted the hyperlink. A small tab showing three icons will open - like this:

How to edit a link in Google slides: Copy, Edit, Unlink

Here’s what you can do:

  • Click on the two overlapping rectangles to copy the hyperlink
  • Click on the pencil icon to edit the hyperlink
  • Click on the crossed-out link to remove the hyperlink

And that’s it. Up until this point, you know how to add a link to Google Slides and use the basic features. Now, let’s go to the fun part !

How Do You Hyperlink Between Slides?

Google slides allow you to hyperlink not only to external sources like a website or video but also to other slides inside your deck. That’s what makes hyperlinks so useful for interactive presentations. And the best part is that it takes less than a minute to link your slides.

How to hyperlink to another slide in Google Slides

1.- First, select an object in your source slide. This is the element where you’ll add the link to your preferred slide. For example, a table of contents could be your source slide, and you’ll insert the links to each section.

2.- Go to Insert > Link (or use any of the four methods described above).

3.- A dialog box will open, and you should click on the option “ Slides in this presentation. ”

4.- Finally, pick the slide you want the object to redirect to, and voilá!

How To Link Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Forms to Google Slides?

Another pro of using Google slides is that you can easily link documents from your Google workspace into your presentation. For example, a Google sheet to expand your finances report, a Google Doc for more details about your marketing plan, etc. Just follow these steps:

1.- Select the element where you want the hyperlink to go.

2.- Use the shortcut Ctrl + K (or any method from the list above)

3.- Search for your document in the dialog box and click on it

In case you don’t find your document, here’s a little-known feature that Google Slides has recently implemented:

Replace URL in Google Slides

1.- Paste the document URL directly to the slide

2.- Press enter so it changes to a blue color

3.- Hover over the URL , and a preview window will show up

4.- Click on the option “Link” to replace the URL with the name of the document

And there you have it: Your document title as a hyperlink.

How To Link a PDF In Google Slides?

Currently, there’s no option to hyperlink a PDF in your Google slides. However, you can use a trick to create a link for your PDF document and add it to your presentation.

1.- First, you need to upload the PDF file to your Google Drive

2.- Then, right-click on it and go to the “ Get link ” option

3.- Adjust the file access as needed and click “ Copy link .”

4.- In Google slides, paste that link directly (as we saw in the previous section). Alternatively, you can select an object and press Ctrl+K (or use any of the four methods from part 1)

5.- If you chose the keyboard shortcut option, search for the name of your PDF document in the blank bar and click on it to create the hyperlink.

How To Hyperlink a Picture In Google Slides

Instead of text hyperlinks, you can make your images or shapes clickable in your Google Slides presentation. It’s pretty easy to do and a nice way to surprise your audience with interactive elements. Let’s check the step-by-step:

Hyperlink an image

1.- Place the image in your slide

2.- Select the image and press Ctrl+K or Insert > Link

3.- Type the URL in the blank bar and click “Apply.”

Now, if you want to make your images even more interesting, you can link only their sections using shapes. Let me show you how:

Hyperlink sections of an image

2.- Go to Insert > Shape , and select one that resembles the object you want to link in your image.

3.- Draw the shape on the object and make it fit perfectly.

4.- In the toolbar, click “ Fill color ” and select a similar color to the object tone.

5.- Then, go to custom and click on the “+” button. A box will pop up so you can adjust transparency .

6.- Add the hyperlink to your shape.

You can do the same to several elements in your image and make clickable buttons that add a “wow” effect to your Google slides.

How to Change Default Link Color in Google Slides

You’ve already mastered adding hyperlinks in Google slides. Now, if you’re not a fan of the blue underlined text and want to customize the color of your links , here’s what you need to do:

1.- Go to Slide > Edit theme

2.- Select “ Colors ” from the toolbar, and a column will appear on the right

3.- Open the dropdown menu and click on “ Link. ”

4.- In that section, you’ll be able to pick your preferred color for your hyperlinks.

Change link default color in Google Slides

As seen in the examples, you can use the power of hyperlinks to offer external resources, create fun quizzes, show an original table of contents, and much more.

You've learned how to convert from PPT to Google Slides. It's really easy, but there are tips to make your PPTX to Google Slides even more successful.

It's easy to import files from PowerPoint into Google Slides. Here are some best practices to use as you upload PPT to Google Slides:

  • Control Quality. Start with a clean, original presentation. If you start with a low-quality presentation, converting PPTX to Google Slides won't improve it. Make sure that slides are designed well and your images are clean. Also, be sure that your fonts are readable and the links work.
  • Manage File Size. Delete unused slides before uploading. This reduces the file size and the amount of work you've got to do after the conversion.
  • Pay Attention to File Type. If the presentation file type you're trying to import into Google Slides isn't supported, go back to the original app. Then, export it to a supported format (such as PowerPoint) and retry. (Depending on the original file type, you may lose some features after import.)
  • Be Aware of Font Changes. Google Slides may not match the fonts you originally used. Instead, it converts your fonts to the closest available font. The fonts may not be an exact match.
  • Expect Format Changes. Likewise, your formatting after the import into Google Slides will be like your original formatting, but it may not be the same. You may need to tweak it to match your intent.
  • Reinsert Links. Currently, links embedded into a PowerPoint presentation don't work after you convert PPT to Google Slides. Make a checklist and adjust hyperlinks after upload.
  • Don't Import PDFs. At this time, a PDF file can't be imported as a Google Slides presentation or converrted into one. But you can take a screenshot of a PDF and insert the image into your Google Slides presentation.

The import process for importing PowerPoint files into Google Slides is like the import process for all Google Drive tools.

You can convert from PPT to Google Slides, but Google Drive also supports conversions for other apps. To read a complete tutorial on Google Drive file conversions, review:

What to Know

  • On the website, go to Insert > Link to choose a destination slide.
  • In the app, tap Insert link to pick where the link should go.

This article explains how to link to another slide from within a Google Slides presentation. Instructions for both the desktop website and the mobile app are included.

How to Link to a Slide in Google Slides

It's as easy as choosing the source object and the destination slide, but the directions are a little different between the website and app.

Link Slides From the Website

Use the Insert menu to find the hyperlink option.

Highlight the text or select the object/image for which you want to create a hyperlink.

Be careful what you're choosing here. If you have text on top of a large object, you might accidentally choose the object when you really want to add a link to the text.

Go to Insert > Link , or press Ctrl+K (Windows) or Command+K (Mac).

Select the slide you want to link to. If you have trouble finding it, choose Slides in this presentation to view only those slides.

Link Slides From the App

Tap-and-hold the item to see the hyperlink option.

Select the object or press-and-hold the text to highlight it (double-tap the text to enter edit mode).

Tap Insert link . If you don't see this option, you either can't add a hyperlink to that specific object, or it's in the overflow menu (the three dots).

Search for and then select the slide you want to link to. All the slides in your presentation are listed in the Slides menu.

Tap the checkmark at the top right to save the link, and then be sure to also select the checkmark at the top left of the next screen to save the changes you made to the slide.

Editing Hyperlinks in Google Slides

At any time, you can change or remove the hyperlinks you've made.

Select the hyperlink once for a small menu to pop up. Use the second link (called Edit link in the app) to change which slide should appear when it's clicked, or use the third link ( Remove link in the app) to completely delete that hyperlink.

You can also change the formatting of the link to adjust the color or remove the hyperlink's underline. You might do this to make the text flow better with the slide's overall theme, so it blends in and looks like other items in the slideshow, instead of an obvious link.

To do that, highlight the text, and then use the formatting menu to make any changes you want. In the example below with the letter C , we've removed the underline and restored the black text color so it looks more like the text from the other slides. The link still works despite the formatting changes.

How to Use the Hyperlink During a Presentation

When you want to proceed to the next slide in a presentation, it's typical to click somewhere on the slide. However, if you have a specific slide you want to advance to—one you've already made a hyperlink for—you have to make sure to select that link when it comes time to access the slide you want to present.

A presentation naturally flows from the first slide to the second one, and then the third, and so on. If there are things you want to address earlier than they'd be presented during the natural flow of the slideshow, you can jump to them ahead of time through hyperlinks. It's essentially a shortcut to wherever you want to go next.

For example, maybe you have a citations slide at the very end of the presentation that provides sources for the data you're discussing. Creating a hyperlink provides an easy way to link to that slide from all your slides so you don't have to click through potentially dozens of slides just to reach the one you want to present right now, nor do you need to squeeze all the citations in each slide that needs them. If you care to show those sources during the presentation, they're now just a click away.

Another handy use for a hyperlink is to link back to the first slide from every other slide, maybe because you're using a table of contents to outline the slideshow. Linked slides are also convenient if you're building a walkthrough, such as a software tutorial, because specific objects you've hyperlinked can then go directly to whatever slide provides details about that item.

You must select an object before you can insert a link. Make sure there's a blue box around the object you want to link.

To embed a video in Google Slides , go to Insert > Video and select Google Drive, by URL, or use the YouTube search bar. Choose a video and click Select to insert it.

You can convert the PDF to an image and insert it that way. Alternatively, upload the PDF to your Google Drive, right-click the file, and select Get link . Then, insert the link in Google Slides.

How to convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides

how to add notes powerpoint presenter dell monitor

While PowerPoint is widely used to develop presentations, using Google Slides has become a popular alternative. Part of what makes it so popular is that it's free to use, as is other Google software such as Google Docs and Google Sheets – which is a stark contrast to the premium price you'll pay for Microsoft Office and PowerPoint.

Converting a PowerPoint file using Google Slides

Using google drive, importing specific slides.

Even if you know how to use Microsoft PowerPoint , you might want to jump ship to Slides, and Google makes it easy to do so. In fact, it takes little more than a few clicks to convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides. Whether you need to change the format for a coworker or want to permanently switch to the free platform, here's a look at how to convert your PowerPoint into a Google Slides presentation.

What You Need

Microsoft PowerPoint

A computer, laptop, tablet, or phone with access to Google Slides

Step 1: Open Google Slides and click Blank under Start a New Presentation .

Step 2: At the top, under the title settings, click File > Open .

Step 3: Click the Upload tab and choose the Select a File From Your Device button. Locate your PowerPoint file and open it (the extension will be .pptx).

Google will now convert that PowerPoint file into a Google Slides format. Once the process is completed, it will automatically be saved into your Google Slides account via Google Drive.

Conveniently, you can now edit that presentation online and, when the need arises, convert it back to a Microsoft PowerPoint file ( File > Download > Microsoft PowerPoint ).

Another way to convert a PowerPoint file to Google Slides is to use Google Drive .

Step 1: Go to your Google Drive account's home page. Click the New button and then File Upload . Select your PowerPoint file.

Step 2: Select the file on Google Drive, right-click it, and click the Open With tab. Finally, click the Google Slides tab.

Step 3: The PowerPoint will be displayed within Google Slides. Unlike uploading directly via Google Slides, you will have to save the file for this method. Select the File tab and click the Save As Google Slides option from the drop-down menu.

Google Slides’ ability goes beyond just converting an entire PowerPoint file. You can also choose specific slides you want to import as opposed to the entire presentation itself.

Step 1: Open a new Google Slides presentation. Within the File tab, select the Import Slides option and then choose the Upload tab. Select the PowerPoint file from your PC.

Step 2: Google will now populate a thumbnail-based view of all the slides contained within that PowerPoint file and allow you to select which specific ones you wish to import and convert. Click the Import Slides button when you’re done.

While both presentation creation applications are powerful, if you don't know the basics of composing impactful slides, your presentation will fall flat. Take a look at our collection of PowerPoint best practices -- not only will it improve your presentations, it might help you decide which software to use.

Pros and Cons of Uploading a PowerPoint to Google Slides

Choosing between PowerPoint and Google Slides offers various advantages and disadvantages.

pros cons uploading powerpoint to google slides

  • Google Slides is free to use for any GSuite user.
  • The platform is cloud-based and doesn’t require any software installation.
  • You can check the timeline to see whether previous changes have been made.
  • It’s easy to share for seamless collaboration.
  • You can access it on iOS, PC, Android, and more.
  • Google Slides has limited basic animations and transitions.
  • The templates aren’t as robust as those on PowerPoint.
  • There are fewer export options.
  • Some corporations and organizations won’t accept the format.

Choosing PowerPoint vs. Slides: Which Is Better?

PowerPoint is widely used because it’s available on nearly all Windows desktops, laptops, and other devices. The program has several tools and functions, like PowerPoint Designer, a unique feature that uses a suggestion engine to generate automatic design suggestions for each slide.

That said, Google Slides has exploded in popularity because it’s cloud-based and shareable via Google Drive.

Another advantage of using Google Slides is that multiple users with access to the file can change, edit, and save the presentation. Therefore, making it a great collaborative tool among teams.

So, is Google Slides Better than PowerPoint? I think it’s preferable for Macbook users who need collaborative features (like me).

How to Make a Flow Chart in Google Slides?

How to Make a Flow Chart in Google Slides?

Table of Contents

Want to make your presentations more engaging and easier to understand? Adding flowcharts is a fantastic way to visually represent complex processes or sequences.

In today’s world, where attention spans are shorter than ever, visual storytelling is crucial. Luckily, Google Slides offers a convenient way to create flowcharts. You can either start from scratch or choose from a variety of pre-designed templates.

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of creating flowcharts in Google Slides, step-by-step. Let’s dive in!

Method 1: Create a Flow Chart in Google Slides from Scratch

To create a flowchart in Google Slides from scratch, follow these steps:

  • Start with a Blank Slide: Open Google Slides and create a new presentation. Select a blank slide to serve as the foundation for your flowchart.
  • Insert Flowchart Shapes: Go to the “Insert” menu and choose “Shapes.” You’ll find a variety of shapes suitable for flowcharts, such as rectangles, diamonds, circles, and arrows. Click on a shape to select it, then drag and drop it onto your slide to position it.
  • Connect Shapes with Lines or Arrows: To establish the flow between different steps in your flowchart, use lines or arrows. Again, go to the “Insert” menu and select “Shapes.” Choose the line or arrow shape that best suits your needs. Click and drag to draw a line from one shape to another, connecting them visually.
  • Add Text to Your Flowchart: Double-click on a shape to enter text. You can customize the font, size, color, and alignment of your text to make it clear and visually appealing.
  • Customize Your Flowchart: You can further enhance your flowchart’s appearance by adding colors, changing the shape styles, or using themes. Explore the formatting options available in Google Slides to personalize your flowchart.
  • Save Your Flowchart: Once you’ve completed your flowchart, make sure to save your Google Slides presentation. You can save it to your Google Drive, download it as a PDF or image file, or share it with others.

Method 2: Create a Flow Chart in Google Slides with Diagrams Options

To create a flowchart in Google Slides using Diagrams, follow these steps:

  • Start a New Presentation: Open Google Slides and begin a new blank presentation.
  • Change the Layout: If you prefer a wider workspace for your flowchart, adjust the layout of your presentation. You can do this by clicking on “View” in the top menu bar and selecting “Layout.” Choose a layout that gives you enough room to work.
  • Insert a Flowchart Diagram: Go to the “Insert” tab in the top menu bar. Select “Diagram,” and then choose “Process” from the available diagram options. This will insert a basic flowchart template into your slide.
  • Customize Your Flowchart: The inserted template will likely contain placeholder shapes and text. Start by replacing the placeholder text with your own labels for each step in your process. You can also customize the appearance of your flowchart by changing the shape styles, colors, and fonts. To add more shapes to your flowchart, click the “Add Shape” button within the diagram editor. You can connect shapes using arrows or lines to indicate the flow of your process.
  • Save Your Flowchart: Once you’ve finished customizing your flowchart, save your presentation. This will preserve your flowchart design for future reference or editing.

Closing Thoughts

Creating flowcharts in Google Slides is a straightforward way to make your presentations clearer and more engaging. Whether you start from scratch or use the built-in diagram options, the tools available in Google Slides make the process easy. With a bit of customization, you can create a flowchart that helps you to communicate your ideas.
