Essay on My Visit to Murree Valley Pakistan

Murree is a real beauty of Pakistan which is also known as “Queen of Hills”. It looks like a fantasy which grabs the attention of a lot of tourists. Every summer a lot of people from different nations visit it to get rid of the scorching heat of the sun. I didn’t get a chance to visit it before but last summer when I went there, the whole experience of traveling and visiting beautiful places was memorable.

my favourite place murree short essay in urdu

The weather of Murree is always pleasant and cool. Most of the people even get a chance to experience snow falling. There are beautiful shops, restaurants, cafés, and stalls all around. Moreover, you can hear the fusion of western and Pakistani music which makes the whole atmosphere even more attractive. When the light gets dim in the evening, it becomes harder to leave the place or get back to the hotels. Everyone tends to have a secret desire of staying in the hills forever.

The most important and popular part of the Murree is “Mall Road” which I also visited first. It is always crowded as a lot of people come here to have delicious food and buy unique things for their friends, family, and relatives. However, the best time to visit this road is certainly after the evening when the overall view becomes even more splendid. Also, a lot of adventurous people prefer going to Mall road at midnight. So, the tour of Murree is incomplete without going here.

  • Chair Lift & Cable Car

Chair lift and cable car are other most highlighted features of Murree which everyone loves. It can take one from new Murree to Patriata which are at the distance of 7km from each other. The whole area which comes in between these two destinations is covered with dark and huge forests. Every person is charged at least 500 rupees to complete the ride through chair lift or cable car. The rates, however, keep on increasing over time. But it is absolutely worth it as you get to see a lot of beautiful sceneries from the bird’s eye view.

  • Kashmir Point

Kashmir Point is another place in Murree which would leave you surprised. It is covered with fruit and pine trees where you can see a lot of carefree monkeys jumping from one branch or tree to another. There are also many picnic spots as well which you can visit simply by following the other people or asking any native about it. Most of the spots are surrounded by long hills and dark green trees. Moreover, you would see clouds so near to you that they would give the allusion that you can touch them. It completely feels like paradise which would make you want to stay there throughout the year. In a nutshell, Murree is the most beautiful and unforgettable place to visit at least once in your life. I won’t even mind visiting it every year as it is a fantastic place.

A Visit To Murree (Essay Sample)

A visit to murree.

Murree is a great visiting hill station that is located in Pakistan at the outs. From a distance, it looks more of a fantasy city. The place is visited by different people from different nations since it shields one from the sweltering heat. Though I am adventurous, I had never visited any hill station before. However, a few months ago, I planned to visit Murree. I had always heard stories about its beauty. I had always wished for that moment to be in Murree and experience this peaceful environment, and yes, my desire came true.

Well, on that day, we reached Murree with my friend at around 3.00 p.m. to me it was the best day of my life. The journey to Murree was quite different from the one am used to in the plains. Life around Murree is expensive. The cost of the hotels is too high for the ordinary man, but luckily we got a very dark bungalow at a reasonable price. Being too tired, we chose to rest and begin our adventures on the next day.

The following morning everyone woke up with anxiety and determination. We woke up early to have a view of Murree. The view was awesome. The area was filled with thick fog and beautiful trees that were filled with enticing flowers. The fog created an enchanting feeling that was utterly incredible. The valleys below gave the area a magnificent scenery since they were filled with green tree. It was utterly tremendous. The place was immensely fascinating, and no words can describe the emotions given by the view of Murree.

Though the trip was short, I experienced the wonders that nature holds that make Murree flourish. The area was all green, below it were streams and brooks that went down the mountains. The mountains were cool, and no amount of the sun heat disturbed us no matter how much it was.  Around birds chirped in a rhythm that seemed to be singing welcome songs to us. Some monkeys swayed from tree to tree, seemingly waiting for any visitor to offer them some food. The landscapes were distinctly inspiring, Murree’s neighborhood was satisfying. At Murree, we visited a theme park in Nathia Gali, and it was both wondrous and adventurous. There were many varieties of beautiful flowers and enticing ferns, and the smell of the flowers was pleasing, and I kept breathing in the scent from time to time. The nature of Nathia Gali seemed awakened, it looked like it had a magic touch. To me, this was a very new experience thus I watched everything closely with rapt attention.

The day ended, and we had to go back to the bungalow and wait for the next day so that we could travel home. On our way back, dark clouds were visible in the sky, and as a result, it rained heavily. On arrival to the bungalow, we were heavily drenched, and the only option was having some hot coffee. Throughout the night, there was a heavy downpour, but luckily when morning came, the rained had stopped. The sun rose gracefully, and it was time to travel back. Along the way, one could see a golden light lighting the mountains. The view was nothing less than fascinating.

To sum everything up, Murree is the best place that I have ever visited all my life. Till date, I still consider Murree as a fantastic place.

Murree Hill Station

my favourite place murree short essay in urdu

Murree  is a popular hill station and a summer resort in Pakistan, Murree is specially for the residents of Islamabad. Murree is also visited as one of the most favourite destination for Pakistani tourists in Sumer and during snowfall of winter.

Murree is located along Islamabad-Kohala highway N75, some 30 km (19 mi) northeast of Islamabad.

The name Murree is derived from ‘marhi’, “high place” although there is a popular belief it was named after the virgin Mary during the British times

It is situated on the southern slopes of the Western Himalayan foothills as they ascend to the northeast towards Kashmir. During British Rule in the nineteenth century, its altitude was established at 7,000 feet (2,100 m), but its actual altitude has now been determined as 2,300 m (7,500 ft) above sea level.

Murree Hills - Image

Murree is accessible by road from the centre of the Islamabad and Rawalpindi areas. It is still associated with Britain; many British fruits (including cherries, raspberries and strawberries) thrive locally. There is a church, built in 1857, located at the centre of the town, which is still used as a place of worship. Many houses around the church are still standing, functioning mostly as hotels. Old traditional restaurants have been replaced by fast food shops and newer restaurants.

Murree has expanded since 1947 at a rate much greater than that which its infrastructure can sustain. Securing water and electricity has been a constant challenge. The jam-packed bazaar has caught fire a number of times in the last century, and the growth of tourism and a construction boom have had an adverse effect on the local environment.

History of Murree

Murree, aftermath of fire in 1875  A 19th century post officeMurree was founded in 1851 by the Governor of Punjab, Sir Henry Lawrence, and was originally established for the British troops garrisoned on the Afghan frontier[4] as a sanatorium.

The permanent town of Murree was constructed at Sunnybank in 1853. The church was sanctified in May 1857, and the main road, Jinnah Road, formerly known as The Mall (and still commonly referred to as), was built. The most significant commercial establishments, the Post Office, general merchants with European goods, tailors and a millinery, were established opposite the church. Until 1947, access to Jinnah Road was restricted for “natives” (non-Europeans).

The railway connection with Lahore, the capital of the Punjab Province, made Murree a popular resort for Punjab officials, and the villas and other houses erected for the accommodation of English families gave it a European aspect. It was described in the Gazetteer of Rawalpindi District, 189394 as follows:

The sanatorium of Murree lied in north latitude 33 54′ 30″ and east longitude 73 26′ 30″, at an elevation of 7,517 feet (2,291 m) above sea level, and contained a standing population of 1,768 inhabitants, which was, however, enormously increased during the [May-November] season by the influx of visitors and their attendant servants and shopkeepers. It is the most accessible hill station in the Punjab, being distant from Rawalpindi only a five hours’ journey by tonga dak. Magnificent views are to be obtained in the spring and autumn of the snow crowned mountains of Kashmir; and gorgeous sunset and cloud effects seen daily during the rains [July-August]. Part of the station, especially the Kashmir end, are also well wooded and pretty.[4] Murree also can boast of a world-class educational establishment: the *Lawrence School, Ghora Gali

In 1901 the population of the town was officially 1844, although if summer visitors had been included this could have been as high as 10,000.

In the hot season it was the headquarters of the Lieutenant General of the Northern Command. The Commissioner of the Rawalpindi Division and the Deputy-Commissioner of Rawalpindi also resided here during part of the hot season, for which period an Assistant Commissioner was placed in charge of the subdivision consisting of Murree Tehsil. The site was selected in 1850 almost immediately after the annexation of the Province, and building operations commenced at once. In 1851 temporary accommodation was provided for a detachment of troops; and in 1853 permanent barracks were erected. The garrison generally consisted of three mountain batteries. In 1873, 1874, and 1875 Murree was the summer headquarters of the Punjab Government. It was connected with Rawalpindi town by a service of tongas.

The houses crown the summit and sides of an irregular ridge, commanding magnificent views over forest-clad hill-sides into deep valleys studded with villages and cultivated fields. The neighbouring hills were covered during the summer with encampments of British troops, while the station itself is filled with European visitors from the plains and travellers to Kashmir. A fine view of the snowy peaks of Kashmir is to be had on a clear day, and the crest of Nanga Parbat (26,182 feet (7,980 m)) can sometimes be seen. The municipality was created in 1850.

The income during the ten years ending 19023 averaged Rs. 49,500, and the expenditure Rs. 48,200. In 19034 the income and expenditure were Rs. 5r,400, chiefly from octroi, and Rs. 54,400 respectively. The income and expenditure of cantonment funds averaged Rs. 10,000 between 1893 and 1903. The chief educational institutions are the Lawrence Military Asylum for soldiers’ children, and the St. Denys’ and Convent English schools for girls. The station contains the Lady Roberts Home for invalid officers and a branch of the Alliance Bank of Simla. The Murree Brewery was the only industrial concern of any importance.

Murree to Bhurban

Bhurban is celebrated as one of the only resort areas of the country where there is a 5 star hotel built by Pakistan Services Limited, the Pearl Continental Hotel. Bhurban is only 9 Kilometers from Murree and practically it can be called as an area of Murree.

Murre to Nathiagali & Nathiagali to Abbottabad (Tour Excursion)

Nathiagali the famous resort area is only 45 minutes from Murree. The descent on the Nathia Gali -Abbottabad road leads to the city of Abbottabad right under the Murree hills. Abbottabad, a popular summer resort in the midst of spacious valleys, is surrounded by green hills and is a pretty large city and is located at a distance of 116 km from Rawalpindi and 217 km from Peshawar if you follow the MAIN road. It can get pretty hot in summers and pretty cold in winters but the temperature range stays bearable. It may feel hot in the sun but its cool in the shade. Surrounded by high hills, Abbottabad is named after its first British Commissioner Sir James Abbott. It still has a very British air. The Cantonment area of Abbottabad is still very British. The European bungalows, the club, the churches and the cemeteries are still there. Lots of greenery in Abbottabad, beautiful trees and nice gardens.

There is a main road which is the centre of activity (I think its called the Mall). The good hotels are SpringField, Sarban and others. Abbottabad is famous for its golf courses. Take a visit. Also see Shimla Hill View Point, Illayasi Mosque with a natural water spring and there is a pool nearby which I think carries crocodiles. The place has beautiful gardens like; Jinnah Garden, Ladies Garden etc maintained by the local Cantonment Board. The splendid stretch of turf promises plenty of room for polo, football, hockey and golf. At the back of the station towards the west is the Brigade Center, which is an ideal place ideal for walks and picnic. Nice place to stay If you’re coming from Lahore to visit the North.

Wildlife in Nathiagali

The Nathiagali region serves as home to all kinds of wildlife; various species of birds, insects, butterflies and animals. Unlike the crows of the southern cities of Pakistan, you will find ravens in areas like Nathiagali. Visitors are advised to sun their bedding on arrival to get rid of bed-bugs, and to keep repellants and pesticides for insects as these have a tendency to show up a lot, especially in old homes, and in the monsoon season.

Horses are a common sight during summer months and are offered to children and adults alike for rides at rates that are often negotiable. Monkeys are aplenty, previously known to be a little shy, they have reportedly become more aggressive in recent years, some say this due to increased abuse suffered at the hands of tourists, who often tease these monkeys or try to steal them. Monkeys often come up to guesthouses and hotels in search of snacks and can be quite noisy and playful.

River Jehlum has bounded it by in the east, NWFP districts of Abbottabad and Heripur to theNorth and West, Islamabad Capital Territory to the Southwest and Kotli Sattian Tehsil (town) of Rawalpindi district to the South.

Brief History

Murree was a town and it was built according to building frame of European cities with Church in the centre and main road, The Mall . Mall Road is running along with commercial places and administrative offices around the same. The Mall was and still is still the centre of attraction.  Only Europeans were allowed access to the Mall and after 1947, Non-European got access to The Mall.

Murree Sanitarium

It was initially known as US sanatorium and it was best and most popular convalescence area. It was selected because of its cool climate and it used to serve for British troops and was one of the several such hill stations established in the foothills of Himalayas across the Indian subcontinent. It was one of two important hill stations in the Punjab. The other one was Simla, which is known as Hamachal Pardesh state of India in present day. Murree was preferable because it was more accessible from the Punjab plains than Simla. That is why it served as summer capital of the province till after being replaced by Simla in 1875.

Origin of the Name

There are different theories exist about the origin of Murree’s name. Marrhi is the local language in Murree. One theory says that Murree name has been derived from local Marrhi which means a ridge. There is another theory according to which it is derived from Turkish  marg  which means a meadow. It can be possible because there is considerable Turkish cultural influence in this area.

Turkish Influence in the language

There are number of words have been included in the local language from Turkish language. It Turkish Marq took centuries to become Mari. It were the incidentally the spellings and these were used by the British when they initially started contacting in this area. Spellings of Murree were adopted in 1875.

There is another explanation as well which is, Murree has been derived from the name of Hazrat Marriam, or Virgin Marry and it is also been said that she is buried at the Pindi Point. It is one of the highest places in surrounding areas.

There is no clear indication in the records that can explain its name before the occupation of British in 1946. There were Afghan and Sikh rule in this area and this area was referred with the name tribe inhabiting the same. Tehsil Murree was created in 1850, when hill tract was transferred which includes Murree as well as Hazara district to Rawalpindi district.

British colonial government constructed Murre hill station in 1850. It was soon after when it captured this area. Murre is located between Kashmir Point and Pindi Point. Its location signifies its appearance as Kashmir point gives a panoramic view of snow laden Himalaya and Pir Panjal ranges in Kashmir. On the other side, Pindi Point represents its adjustments with national capital Islamabad and adjacent Rawalpindi. At Pindi Point one can enjoy ride on a Chairlift three kilometers down to Bansragalli and enjoy a panoramic view of Hazara Mountains as well as Rawalpindi Islamabad.

River Jehlum is located in the East of Tehsil Murree which separates it from Azad Kashmir. Abbottabad district is located in the  North and  North West  of Murree, Islamabad, the national capital to the south west and sister tehsil Kotli Sattian of Rawalpindi district lies to the South .

Murree is consisted of 92 villages and these are divided in five areas or ‘ Ilakas. These  areas includes Phulgran, Charhan, Dewal, Kotli and Karor. Parts of the areas which were placed under the rule of Raja pf Muzaffarabad in 1831 along with Murree and Kahuta area including territory from Khanpur near Taxila in Haripur District to Boi on the confluence of Rivers Jehlum and Kunhar were however not retransferred to Rawalpindi. Instead these areas were merged into Hazara District. Sometimes later Pulgran was transferred to Rawalpindi Tehsil and now forms part of Islamabad Capital territory. In 1990s Kotli and some villages in then Karor  ilaka  were separated to form Kotli Sattian Tehsil.

Murree’s economy and whole life is very much dependent on its weather conditions. It has four distinguishable seasons in whole year.

  • Spring in Murree starts in March and ends in middle of May. Maximum temperature during this period hovers between twelve to twenty and minimum between four and ten. This season brings heavy rain and hail storms in this area. The fruit trees laden with flowers give a spectacular view.
  • Summer starts from middle of June and last till end of August.  The lowest temperature during this season is between 13 and 16 degree centigrade while highest temperature is between 20 and 25 degree centigrade. This is the best season in the area and that is most of the people visit this area during this season.
  • Autumn starts with the arrival of September and lasts till the starts of winter in early December. Temperatures remain mild in this season. Clear sky could be seen in the region during autumn when one can enjoy full view of mountains around without cloud hindrance.
  • Winter starts in December and normally brings heavy snowfall. Murree and its surrounding areas are covered with thick sheet of snow during most part of the season. Temperature mostly drifts around the freezing point.

Tehsil Murree has occupied total area of 434 sq kilometer and according to 1998 census has a population of 176426 people of which 155,051 live in the rural areas while others live in Murree city as well as different cantonments spreading over different hill tops.

Dhund (Abbasi) tribe has occupied most of the rural areas of Murree. This tribe has origins from Hazrat Abbas, uncle of Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be Upon Him). Dhund (Abbasis) have considerable presence in all areas surrounding Murree. The tribe forms overwhelming majority of population in Deerkot in Azad Kashmir.  Pockets of Dhund majority areas are also found in districts of Mansehra, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and Kahuta and Kotli Sattian Tehsils of Rawalpindi district. There are some other tribes that are present in Tehsil Murree which  include Sattis, Kathwals and Danials inhabiting southern parts of the Tehsil. Sattis form overwhelming majority in Katli Satian Tahsill and some parts of Kahuta Tehsil of Rawalpindi district while some of the majority Danial populated areas have been merged into Islamabad capital Territory as well as Kotli Sattian Tehsil.

Other than these tribes, there is sufficient amount of people who belong to Gujar and Jat families as well. History says that these people and other artisan classes were tenants of local tribes. However, most of them have become owners of the lands they tilled after the land reforms of 1958 and in 1970s.

Urban areas are populated with people from all over the country and permanent people are very less in number. However, there is good numbers of refugees from Indian held part of Jammu and Kashmir are also living in these areas. There is very important compensation for these people and that is two members of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, one each representing refugees from Kashmir valley and Jammu respectively are wholly or partially elected from Murree.

Murree is full of bright colors. It is traditional identity for entire world. People mostly wear warm clothes with bright and dark colors because of its traditions and climate. As Murree is a cold place, bright colors help its people for surviving those conditions by absorbing the heat of the sun.

Paharai is the vernacular spoken in the areas locally. It is quite different from the language of same name spoken in the southern slopes of Himalays in Hamachal Pradesh and other parts of Northern India. The language spoken in Murree is an amalgamation of Hindko, Potohari and Hinko languages which is spoken in Rawalpindi, Hazara and western and south western sides of Kashmir. Punjabi /Potohari are spoken in all the hilly areas of Rawalpindi district including Murree, Kahuta and Kotli Sattian with slight variations.

Customs and Traditions

As Murree is tourist attraction, the local tradition has changed a lot due to the outsiders coming in the city. The local community got a chance to interact with the outsiders, eventually sharing their culture with them as well.

As Murree is related to Hazara division, the local tradition is very much similar to theirs. The local tradition comprises of two main clans of Dhand, Chandia and Ratnia. Both the clans are descendants of two Rajput rulers. These rulers were descendants of Gahi, ruler of a tract around Delhi. These people refuse to eat with other Muhammadans. They do not even allow them to touch their cooking vessels. They retain Hindu customs at their weddings. Barat or procession, longing up to two to three days, is usually host by the father of Bride. Pakistan - Murree Hills A land of Greatest Mountains & Colorful Culture - A Complete Guide to Pakistan   Basic Info | History of Pakistan | Climate | Places to Visit | Slide Show | Search | Tours

Murree  is a popular hill station and a summer resort in Pakistan, Murree is specially for the residents of Islamabad. Murree is also visited as one of the most favourite destination for Pakistani tourists in Sumer and during snowfall of winter.

The name Murree is derived from 'marhi', "high place" although there is a popular belief it was named after the virgin Mary during the British times

Until 1947, access to Jinnah Road was restricted for "natives" (non-Europeans).

Until 1876, Murree was the summer headquarters of the Punjab local government; after 1876 the headquarters were moved to Simla.[5]

It is the most accessible hill station in the Punjab, being distant from Rawalpindi only a five hours' journey by tonga dak.

The chief educational institutions are the Lawrence Military Asylum for soldiers' children, and the St. Denys' and Convent English schools for girls. The station contains the Lady Roberts Home for invalid officers and a branch of the Alliance Bank of Simla. The Murree Brewery was the only industrial concern of any importance.

Dark and Cloudy Murree Landscape[edit] 1857 War of Independence See also: 1857 War of Independence in Murree In the summer of 1857, the local tribes of Murree and Hazara, including the Dhond Abbasi and Tanoli, planned to attack the British Army. The campaign was led by the chief of the Dhond Abbasi tribe, Sardar Sherbaz Khan, and by Malik Nawab Bahadur Khan of the Tanoli tribe. They fought respectably against the British Army, giving the British considerable difficulties. The British Army eventually signed an agreement with the local Abbasi tribe, which was refused by the Tanoli tribe, thereby dividing the opposition to the British. The British Army later ignored the agreement to take control of Murree again.

British presence After the British forces' occupation of Murree and Abbottabad, many English soldiers and administrators opted to spend the summers there because of the cooler climate. The British settled in and raised families. Some prominent people who were born here include:

Bruce Bairnsfather - a famous cartoonist during world War I Francis Younghusband - an army officer and explorer. He established the Bible Society in the Christian High School in Geryal Murree. The society did in depth research into the local languages. This society translated a chapter of new testament book Loqas in Dhondi that was noted by the compilers of the "Linguistic Survey Of India".[8] Reginald Dyer - officer responsible for the Amritsar Massacre

Bhurban is celebrated as one of the only resort areas of the country where there is a 5 star hotel built by Pakistan Services Limited, the Pearl Continental Hotel . Bhurban is only 9 Kilometers from Murree and practically it can be called as an area of Murree.

Nathiagali the famous resort area is only 45 minutes from Murree. The descent on the Nathia Gali - Abbottabad road leads to the city of Abbottabad right under the Murree hills .

Nice place to stay If you're coming from Lahore to visit the North.

The World Wildlife Federation has an office in the Galiaath, in recent years, this organisation assisted in the breeding of a certain type of leopard in the Black Forest right by Dungagali and Nathiagali, this area was thought to be a perfect habitat for such creatures, but according to local reports they frequently come out of the forest to steal cattle of local villagers. One such cat had to be shot. Packs of pie-dogs which were previously considered to be a night-time menace can no longer be seen anywhere in the Galiaath, it is thought that most have been killed and consumed by the newly bred leopards. In the summer of 2006, a large number of women were found dead in the deep valleys of Galiath with wounds showing that they were killed, soon, a large leopard was caught which was believed to be the culprit of all cases, he was kept in captivity but was eventually shot as a result of his aggression, his body has been stuffed and kept in the Dhunga Gali Wildlife Museum, the museum owners named him the Ghost of Galiath. These leopards are rarely spotted. However, a pet dog or animal is very likely to be grabbed by the cats at night, and if any such pets are brought to Nathiagali they must be kept indoors to avoid this.

Thandiani means cold in the local language. Its around about 1 hour and 30 minutes on a good decent road. Its rises steeply at some places. It is 2700 meters above sea level on a small plateau surrounded by pine forests. This beautiful spot can easily be approached from Abbottabad, which is 24 km away. It is totally unspoiled and has the loveliest of views of all the hill stations of Pakistan. The scenery here is breathtaking and superb. It is pretty high. Just a few kilometres into the road and you start gaining height quickly. One place on the road offers a stunning view of Abbottabad city. Thandiani is not located in the Galliat Range but some other range. Beautiful trees on the way and also a few small caves which are probably home for the wildlife.

Thandiani was discovered by the British but was later neglected and was only rediscovered as a hill station recently so it is completely unspoiled. There are few shops at Thandiani and only one basic guesthouse (no big expectations!). It only gets cold about 2 km before Thandiani. There is also a Pakistan Television Booster at the top and a Pak Air-Force Radar (No Photographs). But the beauty of this area is its views. Stunning views of all the areas around this region. Views of the Galliat Range, Hazara Region, Swat Forests, Chitral region and that of Abbottabad itself. Heard the dawn was beautiful but didn't stay at the guesthouse though. Also heard it gets real cold at night even in summers almost below 0 C. Lots of greenery and some beautiful rocks on the ground. There is also a road at the top which seems to go straight into the sky when you first enter Thandiani but it gives wonderful views. Must visit place!

Mirajani peak

Miran Jani is the highest point in the Galliat Range at about 2867 m. It is a very scenic trek to Miran Jani Top which offers wonderful views of the pine forests and hills surrounding the region. The trail to Miran Jani is just behind the Governor's House. You can book horses from Nathia Gali if you dont want to go there by foot.

Dungagali is a picturesque small resort situated on the slopes of the Mukshpuri hill (2376 m.). It commands a charming view of a series of wooded spurs projecting towards the river Jhelum on the western side. From Dungagali one can climb the 2813 m peak of Mukhshpuri, which is the highest point in the range. Natural springs abound on the slopes. It is 30 km from Murree. There are nice hotels available too.

For just two hours north of the capital city of Islamabad, Murree and its surrounding areas offer some of the most breathtaking natural scenery and recreational activities in Pakistan. Murree is one of the best hill stations in Pakistan and the perfect place to head to if you want to escape the scorching summer heat. This charming mountain town located in the foothills of the Himalayas is home to some of the most impressive scenery in the country. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, or bustling bazaars, Murree has something for everyone.

This post will guide you to everything Murree has to offer. We’ll tell you about the town’s history, where to find the best hotels and restaurants, and what activities you can enjoy there. So read on and start planning your Pakistani adventure!

There are various legends surrounding the name’s genesis. Some historians connect it to the Turkish word Marg, which means a Meadow. Turkish had a significant cultural impact in this area, and several terms in the local tongue still have Turkish roots. Another explanation for this town’s name links it to the Virgin Mary, Hazrat Mariam. Locals refer to it as Mai Mari da Asthan (“Resting Place of Mother Mary”). In 1875, the British first used the spelling Murree. Before the British Raj in 1846, no documented or convincing evidence supported its name. Before the British took over, Afghans and later Sikhs ruled this area.

In 1847, Major James Abbott made the first mentioned Marhee, as it was then known, as a potential hill station. Sir Henry Lawrence, President of the Punjab Administrative Board, began the town’s early development in 1851. Initially, it served as a hospital for British soldiers stationed on the Afghan border. In 1850, the British government established the municipality. In 1853, Sunnybank underwent construction of the permanent town of Murree. In May 1857, the British built the church and the main road, Jinnah Road (initially called Mall Road and still commonly referred to as “The Mall”). The Post Office and general merchants selling European goods, tailors, and hatmakers were the most significant businesses built next to the church. The Mall was initially only accessible to Europeans, but after 1947, non-Europeans had also given access.

Murree Hillside

A revolt against the British started in the summer of 1857. The local Hazara and Murree tribes attacked the weakened British Army garrison in Murree, but the British ultimately won the battle and forced the tribes to submit. Murree served as the Punjab local government’s summer headquarters from 1873 to 1875. After that year, due to the widespread cases of diarrhea, the capital had to be moved to Simla. Beginning in the early 20th century, the British government built military installations and cantonments near Murree, including Barian, Upper and Lower Topa, Gharial, Kuldana, and Kalabagh (near Nathiagalli). They established many English-medium schools for the children of British families and soldiers during this time. They included Saint Dynes, Lawrence College, Juses, and Merry Convent. After Pakistan gained independence, Murree kept growing in popularity among Pakistanis. People from the Subcontinent had minimal access to Mall Road before independence.

Transport & Communication

For centuries, Murree has served as a gateway to Kashmir, with whom it shares extensive and close linguistic, cultural, and social ties. Consequently, Murree has historically served as the state’s entry point. Until 1922, the only modes of transportation between Rawalpindi and Murree and Baramula in Kashmir were Tongas and bull carts. Lorries, also known as solid-tire buses and trucks, first appeared on the road in 1922. The introduction of trucks and buses with hollow tires came later. After independence, the Murree subdivision’s road network underwent significant advancements, and today the region has a sizable network connecting nearly every village to main roads.

How to Get to Murree?

There are four ways to get to Murree from the nation’s capital, Islamabad. The old Islamabad-Murree Road takes  1.30 hours  to travel; the four-lane Islamabad-Murree Expressway takes an hour. The Expressway has a bad reputation for accidents, and police frequently stop drivers for speeding. If you’re not in a rush, you should look at two less traveled routes. The third longer route, via Nilore and Simli Dam, connects at Lower Topa and leads to Murree from Islamabad. The fourth adventurous way begins at Islamabad’s Monal restaurant and eventually leads to the “old Murree Road.” This route requires a 4×4 because of the unpaved road in some places.

This fourth route recommends a printed copy of a Google map and a GPS. The Nilore-Simli-Lower Topa route, in particular, offers breathtaking scenery and a refreshing mountain drive.

They forbid them from even touching their cooking utensils. At their weddings, they still follow Hindu traditions. The bride’s father usually hosts the Barat, or procession, which can last up to two or three days. They have also kept several other Hindu social customs. These people rarely marry outside the tribe, and polygamy is common among them.

At Patriata, fifteen kilometers southeast of Murree, the Punjab government has begun to develop New Murree city. Bhurban and Patriata (New Murree) have grown as tourist hubs. On one of the main roads leading to Azad Kashmir, Bhurban is located 13 kilometers from Murree at an elevation of 6000 feet. It is home to Pakistan’s top hotel chain, the five-star Pearl Continental Hotel (PC). Another tourist destination in the Murree area is the nine-hole golf course that has recently sprouted. Because of the potential of this region, this project might succeed. The Murree Galliat region is well-known throughout South Asia for its breathtaking scenery and intriguing vegetation. Mountains covered in pine and oak trees, bubbling with springs, crisscrossed by rivulets, scattered with sprawling lawns, and dotted with orchards brimming with fruit present a vision of paradise on earth.

Murree, Pakistan’s Most Popular Holiday Destination:

If you are a teacher in any Pakistani school and ask your pupil to write an essay on “A trip to Northern areas”, I bet 90 % of the pupil will write an account of their trip to Murree. And if you have ever wondered which place is considered a honeymoon spot in this country, the answer is Murree again !

Courtesy: Qornography

Murree is situated at the height of 7500 feet in the foothills of Himalaya mountains, some 50 kilometers northwest of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. Mountains covered by dense jungles of pine, walnut, maple and oak trees, Murree offers its visitors a  beautiful scenic view comprising of lush green landscapes, gurgling springs, tall trees hosting the chirping birds and frolicking squirrels. Flocks of monkeys gathered at the roadsides to be fed by visitors, heavy snow fall in winters and cool weather in summers aptly makes Murree the most loved vacation spot for Pakistanis.

Cable cars and chair lifts at Ayubia and Patriata provide its riders the panoramic view of mountains for almost three kilometers. The famous Mall road in Murree is a must visit place for shopaholics. Whether you are interested in buying traditional handicrafts, hand woven carpets, gems and stone jewelry, Kashmiri shawls, embroidered clothes, fur coats and leather jackets, scarfs, caps or local dry fruits, mall road is the place to be. For kids, taking a ride on an iron cart pushed manually by locals is a much loved activity. White daisies are found in abundance in forests which are plucked and transformed into beautiful garlands.

Little children dressed in shalwar kameez, the traditional dress of Pakistanis can be seen selling the garlands on roadsides and they are immensely liked by tourist women and kids. Horse riding entertains both elders and youngsters. Spicy chicken karahi is the favorite main course here and corns roasted in salt are a very tasty, healthy and popular snack.

Apart from Ayubia, Patriata and Mall road, places to visit include the Pindi point and Kashmir point. Pindi point is a place that views as far as Islamabad while the Kashmir point gives a panoramic view of snow laden Himalaya. Here you may find tourists holding a binocular to get a closer and clearer look of the view.

on the way

The permanent population of this city is small and it’s well-reputed schooling system makes it one of the most literate cities in the country.  Summer and winter vacations are the peak tourist seasons and hotels are sometimes over booked due to heavy flow of tourists to escape the heat in summers or enjoy snowfall in winters. However, don’t even think of visiting this place on Independence Day or during Eid holidays. You might get stuck in one of the traffic jams and hotels will also be fully occupied which means you might end up spending the night in a corridor or hotel’s lobby.

  • Places to visit in Murree

Origin of the Name

History of Murree

Customs and Traditions of Murree people

Due to the city’s popularity as a tourist destination, the local customs have significantly changed. The local population had the opportunity to interact with the visitors and eventually introduce them to their culture. Since Murree is a part of the Hazara division, their traditions are very similar to those of the locals. Two major Dhand clans, Chandia and Ratnia, make up the local tradition. Two Rajput rulers left descendants in both lineages. These rulers descended from Gahi, who ruled a region close to Delhi. These individuals object to eating with other Muslims.

Murree, Pakistan: Top Holiday Spot

Iram Moazzam September 7th, 2013

By Iram Moazzam

Traditional houses of Murree

Flocks of monkeys gathered at the roadsides to be fed by visitors, heavy snow fall in winters and cool weather in summers aptly makes Murree the most loved vacation spot for Pakistanis.

my favourite place murree short essay in urdu

Courtesy: Omair Syed

Pakistan’s most popular hill station is Murree which lies 50 kilometers northeast of Pakistani capital Islamabad. It is mountainous area, forming part of outer Himalayas and it is located at a comfortable altitude of 7500 feet (2286 meters) in the Himalayan foothills at 33 54′ 30″ north latitude and 73 26 east longitude.  This area contains four major supers that are gradually increasing. Murree city itself is situated at highest among them and it is 7500 feet high. Remaining include Patriata, Kuldana and Gharial.

My grandparents are a source of wisdom and comfort, and I cherish the moments I get to spend with them.

In the evenings, we gather around the fireplace and play board games or watch old movies. The crackling of the fire and the warmth of their presence make me feel safe and content. As I drift off to sleep in my cozy bed, I am filled with gratitude for the love and care that my grandparents provide.
