Telling a story also lets you show off your use of past tenses.

Useful Vocabulary for TV Programs

Example answers.

Now, let’s look at three example cue cards and answers. See how word groups are used. And think about ideas you could borrow for your own answers.

Favorite TV Program Cue Card 1

And say why it’s your favorite TV program.

In my opinion, the show is gripping, riveting , and thrilling, with an unpredictable storyline that kept me on the edge of my seat . From the first episode , the nail-biting suspense was killing me as I watched Walter White slowly become worse and worse as he became a criminal.

All the characters are complex , and their motivations are not always clear, which adds to the tense and electrifying atmosphere of the show.

I think Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show because it kept me guessing all the time. The show’s writing and acting were top-notch , and it’s rare to find a series that can maintain such high levels of suspense and tension for such a long time.

I was glued to the screen during every episode, and the show’s conclusion was both satisfying and unexpected . Breaking Bad is an unforgettable TV series that I would recommend to anyone who loves good drama.

Favorite TV Show Cue Card 2

Describe your favorite TV show.

I’m going to talk about these amazing nature documentaries made by David Attenborough. To my mind , his nature documentaries are a true gem for nature enthusiasts . The way he captures nature’s beauty and presents it in such a peaceful and tranquil way is what makes these documentaries so special.

David Attenborough documentaries help me relax after a long day at the office . I can kick up my feet and relax, putting work from my mind for a while. I can really take a moment to relax while I watch all the peaceful scenes from nature.

We focused on describing how relaxing these documentaries are. This made it easy to use lots of words from the ‘relaxing object’ word group:

Favorite TV Series Cue Card 3

Describe your favorite TV series.

I’m going to talk about a really funny comedy TV series called Friends. It’s a little bit old but I love it and think it’s hilarious. I also really improved my English by watching lots of episodes of Friends.

I think my favorite character is Joey, who’s this simple but likable guy who wants to be an actor. He’s quite popular with the ladies . But all the characters are really likable and personable and very funny. Chandler is also one of my favorites. He’s a pretty zany, witty character, with a really deadpan kind of humor.

Now It’s Your Turn

It’s best to think of a word group beforehand, so try to memorize one now.

Afterward, listen to your recording and think about how you could improve your answer.

Mastering “What is your favourite TV programme?” in IELTS Speaking

As an IELTS instructor with over two decades of experience, I often encounter students who feel anxious about the IELTS Speaking test, especially when faced with unpredictable questions. One such question that frequently pops up is “What is your favourite TV programme?”. While seemingly straightforward, this question offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase your English language proficiency.

Why this Question Matters in IELTS Speaking

This question assesses several key skills:

  • Vocabulary & Fluency: It tests your ability to discuss entertainment and express preferences using a range of vocabulary.
  • Grammar & Structure: You need to construct grammatically sound sentences and connect your ideas coherently.
  • Discourse Management: It evaluates your ability to elaborate on your answer and provide reasons for your choices.

Tackling “What is your favourite TV programme?”

Here’s a step-by-step approach to answer this question effectively:

Choose a Programme: Select a TV show you genuinely enjoy and can talk about comfortably. Don’t feel pressured to choose a highbrow documentary if you prefer sitcoms! Authenticity is key.

State your Choice Clearly: Begin with a direct answer. For instance:

  • “My favourite TV programme is…”
  • “I’m really fond of…”
  • “I particularly enjoy watching…”

Provide Reasons: Explain why you like this programme. You can mention:

  • Genre: “It’s a gripping crime drama that keeps me on the edge of my seat.”
  • Plot: “The storyline is complex and unpredictable.”
  • Characters: “I find the characters relatable and well-developed.”
  • Themes: “It explores thought-provoking themes like social justice and identity.”
  • Personal Connection: “It reminds me of my childhood/family gatherings.”

Elaborate & Provide Examples: Add depth to your answer with specific examples:

  • “One of my favourite episodes is… because…”
  • “The main character’s determination really inspires me…”
  • “The show’s depiction of… is very realistic.”

Keep it Concise & Relevant: Avoid rambling or going off-topic. Stick to the key aspects that make this programme your favourite.

The Great British Bake Off

Example Answer from a Real IELTS Speaking Test

Examiner: What is your favourite TV programme?

Candidate: “My all-time favourite TV programme is actually a British comedy series called “The Great British Bake Off”. It’s not your typical cooking show; it’s full of warmth and humour. I love watching amateur bakers compete and create amazing cakes and pastries. The judges are lovely, and the contestants are always so supportive of each other. It’s just a feel-good show that never fails to put a smile on my face.”

Tips for Success:

  • Prepare in Advance: Think about TV shows you enjoy and jot down some reasons why you like them. This can save you time during the actual test.
  • Use a Range of Vocabulary: Instead of repeating “good” or “interesting,” explore synonyms like “captivating,” “thought-provoking,” “hilarious,” “engaging,” etc.
  • Practice Regularly: Record yourself answering this question and other related topics. Analyze your responses for fluency, grammar, and vocabulary.

Remember, confidence comes with practice! Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through and demonstrate your passion for the TV shows you love.

Describe a TV program that inspires you a lot.

You should say :

  • What type of program it is?
  • What is it about?
  • How often you watch it?
  • Is it popular in your country?

I have always been quite pernickety all my life in every other thing I do or wish to do; watching television bears no difference. I have never been a verve television viewer; however, one show that I used to be extremely enthusiastic about was ‘The Hauntings’. Although I am not superstitious, nor do I believe in ghosts, this show always used to make me go all agog for it.

I remember I was in the sixth standard when I first got to know about this show and used to wait for it in a frenzied way. This show was basically a paranormal show that used to cover alleged real-life haunted occurrences that people reported. The picturization of these events and how the narratives were depicted sent a bone-chilling wave all through my body. The spooky tales were more than enough to handle for an eleven-year-old. I vividly remember how I used to watch the show with the fullest excitement and terror along with it.

As far as my memory holds, this show used to get aired on weekends around 10 PM. That said, I don’t really remember the broadcast timing in India. However, I used to glue myself to the ‘Discovery’ channel just for this show.

Well, I guess I could start off by pointing something about the type of the program. Actually , nowadays, I don’t watch television that often but I used to be a couch potato in my high school years. I remember sitting in front of the TV and channel-surfed until I sound something interesting. One day, a documentary on Discovery Channel named “The Sacrifice of Genius” caught my entire attention. I really have to add that this program was a serial that consists of 10 episodes. It mainly emphasized on telling the sacrificing life stories of some well – respected scientists in the world such as Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie. By their great passion in researching, those incredible people had gone through so many adversities in order to devote themselves to science. With reference to how often I watched it, as far as I remember, this documentary was broadcasted every Thursday. I was so passionate about it that no matter how busy I was, I managed to watch the box  at 9 pm on Thursday. Although it is a really interesting program, it was not very prevalent during that time. I guess this is because people are often more fond of entertaining programs, rather than academic ones. But after all, this program inspired me a lot and provoke my persistence sense especially when I encounter difficulties in life.

Ielts cue card topic, talk about a tv show you like to watch.

You should say

What is the program about? When do you watch it? Who do you watch it with? Why do you like to watch it?

NOTE  –  The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer ,  and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the subject for one-to-two minutes .

Sample Answer 1

Introduction

Since my childhood, I have been a keen watcher of TV programs. However, I only watch TV occasionally because of a shortage of time.

In my busy schedule, whenever I get some spare time, I watch a TV program.

What is the program about?

The name of the program is  ‘The Kapil Sharma Show . The renowned standup comedian Kapil Sharma is the presenter of this show.

In the program, he invites celebrities from diverse backgrounds like filmstars, cricketers and politicians etc.,

He chats with them and cracks jokes about their mannerism, working style and past mistakes.

Apart from whenever a new movie is about to release, its star cast comes to this program to promote the film. This program is a fantastic platform to spread awareness among the masses and classes.

When do you watch it?  And  Who do you watch it with?

I usually watch it on Sundays along with my family members.

Why do you like to watch it?

I watch it because of many reasons. Firstly in this modern era, due to fierce competition , stress has become an integral part of our lives. In such a scenario, watching comedy programs is prudent because you can avoid your worries by laughing.

Apart from this, all my family members are big fans of this show. So this program allows me to spend quality time with my friends.

Lastly, Kapil Sharma cracks such jokes, which generates guffaws of laughter. That is why I watch it to experience genuine comedy content.

Sample Answer 2

It is a fact people of the contemporary epoch thrive primarily on television for entertainment. Since childhood, I have had this habit of watching tv to pass my leisure time.

Although I watch numerous shows, one of them is exceptional, and hence it is worth mentioning.

The name of the show is  Indian Idol.  It is a talent hunt show. The central focus of this program is to find singing talent from all over the world. Firstly the judges visit places across India and overseas to look for talented singers who have yet to be able to perform on a reliable platform.

After making a list, they shortlist the suitable singers and invite them to participate in the show. The participants are given different singing tasks, and they have to give their best to get the trophy of Indian Idol.

The trophy comes to that singer who sings beyond the conventional domain. Apart from singing, personality and confidence are also taken into account.

When do you watch it?

Being a music enthusiast, I love listening to songs. So every year, a new season of Indian Idol comes, and I watch it without default.

Who do you watch it with?

I usually watch it with my family members. This show comes in the evening, and we protect it during dinner.

I like to watch this show because it brings out hidden talent. But, unfortunately, in my country, there are a lot of singers who need more opportunities.

This show allows them to showcase their talent in front of the whole world.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Talk about a TV Show you Like to Watch “.

2. Do you like watching foreign countries’ TV shows?

Foreign TV shows show quality content, so I usually watch them remain ahead of my peers. Moreover, most Indian Tv shows are copied versions of foreign tv shows. That is why watching foreign TV shows is a prudent approach.

It thrives primarily upon the content shown in the TV show. A few TV channels, such as Discovery and National Geographic, have programs that provide quality educational content for children. There are a number of TV programmes I like to watch but the one I would like to talk about is CID which I am most addicted to . CID is a crime related programme which shows various crime scenes to help the public make aware of crimes and their consequences. I don’t get a chance to watch it every day since I am always busy at work but I do watch it every weekend. ACP Pradyuman is the key character of this serial but Dayal and the other team members are also very famous among kids. 1. Hướng dẫn Talk about your favorite TV programme IELTS Speaking:

  • What You Can Talk About

– What kind of show it is

– What it’s about

– Why you like it so much

– Something interesting/surprising/cool that happened in the show

– Something you learned from it

– Something you remember from it

– The main characters

– The plot (if it has a story

– The themes

– The writing

– The acting

– The music

– The costumes

– The fan culture (if it’s very popular)

– How the TV series influenced your life

– Anything else that comes to mind

– A TV show you liked when you were younger

– A TV show that someone you know likes (your friend, sister, husband, child)

– The kind of TV show you might like to watch one day

– Anything else you like to watch

– A movie you like (just explain clearly why you’re not describing a TV show)

– A series of comics or books you like (just explain clearly why you’re not describing a TV show)

– Anything else similar to a TV show

  • Use the Past Tense To Tell a Story

– Something interesting that happened in the TV program

– Something a character did in it

– Something you learned from it

– A recent episode you saw

– When you started watching this program

– Why you liked it so much when you were younger

– Anything else you remember from this TV program

  • Focus on Vocabulary

Nhóm từ này có thể có các từ và cụm từ như ‘gripping, riveting, unpredictable, suspenseful, I was on the edge of my seat, my eyes were glued to the screen, cliff-hanger, nail-biting…

3. Ví dụ Talk about your favorite TV programme IELTS Speaking:

Now, let’s look at three example cue cards and answers. See how word groups are used. And think about ideas you could borrow for your own answers.

  • Favorite TV Program Cue Card 1

Describe your favorite TV program.

You should say:

– What TV program it is

– How often you watch it

And say why it’s your favorite TV program.

I’m going to talk about a suspenseful TV show called Breaking Bad. The film tells the story of a high school chemistry teacher named Walter White, who discovers he has cancer and begins manufacturing and selling drugs to make enough money to support his family.

In my opinion, the film is engaging, engaging and thrilling, with an unpredictable plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. From the very first episode, the breathless suspense killed me as I watched Walter White get worse and worse as he became a criminal.

All of the characters are complex and their motives are not always clear, which adds to the tense and vibrant atmosphere of the film.

One of the most memorable moments on the show for me was the episode when Walter’s brother-in-law, Hank, was killed by a drug lord. The tension in this scene is palpable. So tense that you could cut it with a knife. I found myself holding my breath as I watched events unfold. It was truly shocking.

I think Breaking Bad is my favorite television show because it keeps me guessing. The film’s script and acting are excellent and it’s rare to find a film that can maintain such a high level of suspense and tension for such a long period of time.

I was glued to the screen during every episode and the show’s ending was both satisfying and unexpected. Breaking Bad is an unforgettable television series that I would recommend to anyone who loves good television.

  • Favorite TV Show Cue Card 2

Describe your favorite TV show.

– The name of the show

– How long you’ve been watching it for

And say why you like this TV show so much.

I will talk about the wonderful nature documentaries made by David Attenborough. In my mind, his nature documentaries are a true gem for nature enthusiasts. The way he captures the beauty of nature and presents it in a peaceful and quiet way is what makes these documentaries so special.

I personally enjoy watching his documentaries after a long day at work. I find them incredibly relaxing, soothing and peaceful and they really help me to relax and relax.

I think my favorite David Attenborough documentary series is Blue Planet. It’s all about fish and the strange creatures that live in the sea. The underwater scenes are stunning and the way Attenborough tells the story of the ocean and its creatures is fascinating. I never get bored watching his series.

David Attenborough’s documentaries help me relax after a long day at the office. I can put my feet up and relax, putting work out of my mind for a while. I can really take a moment to relax while taking in all the peaceful views from nature.

I think Attenborough’s documentary reminds me to take myself less seriously and appreciate the world around me. It’s refreshing to watch something that has nothing to do with work, politics or busy everyday life. Instead, I can focus on the beauty of nature. I always feel better when I watch them. I find them really pleasant and I usually feel refreshed and happy afterward.
