Online nursing degrees are respected when earned from an accredited program with a good reputation. In-person and online programs are evaluated for accreditation based on the same criteria. Most online nursing degrees require students to gain hands-on experience through clinical hours and attendance at other in-person sessions. But online nursing programs are more flexible, use nontraditional learning formats and may be more affordable than on-campus programs.

Employers care that you attend a nursing program accredited by the appropriate nursing commissions. Some institutions only hire nurses who graduated from accredited programs, as those graduates can become licensed in the state they wish to work.

Online nursing school prepares students for a rigorous profession. Courses in nursing programs cover topics in biology and chemistry, as well as mathematics, psychology and sociology. Only highly motivated and self-disciplined students should pursue online nursing programs. Students should have good time management and organizational skills, and be willing to seek help when needed. After all, they might not receive the immediate feedback expected from an in-person program. Taking a nursing program online does not guarantee you a degree – you still have to earn it. According to U.S. News survey data, 74% of online master's in nursing students who entered a program during the 2017-2018 academic year graduated by June 2022.

Nursing is in demand because the need for health care professionals is growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the employment of registered nurses, a role that requires a bachelor’s degree in many states, is projected to grow 6% from 2021 to 2031. In addition, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse workforce , including nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives – roles that require at least a master’s degree (plus a DNP or Ph.D. to advance further) – is projected to grow 40% by 2031. The overall increase in demand will result from vacancies left by those leaving the industry or retiring, the BLS notes, as well as an increased emphasis on preventive care and additional consideration of aging populations and those with chronic health conditions.

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) must pass a national board certification exam administered by varying national accreditation organizations, depending on the specialization. APRNs include certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners.

Organizations that offer board certification exams that apply to different specializations include the following:

• The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board certifies pediatric nurse practitioners.
• The American Midwifery Certification Board certifies nurse midwives.
• The National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists certifies registered nurse anesthetists.
• The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board oversees several certification exams, including the family nurse practitioner certification exam for family NPs.
• The American Nurses Credentialing Center offers board certifications for several NPs, including those specializing in psychiatric mental health.

Many boards require candidates to complete a certain number of clinical hours before sitting for the exam. For example, the acute-care nurse practitioner certification requires 1,000 clinical hours.

To practice in a specific state, APRNs must pursue state licensure, which is usually awarded through the state’s board of nursing. Specific requirements vary by state.

Continuing Education

After earning an MSN, some students pursue a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) or a Ph.D. in nursing . Both represent the highest level of education for the profession.

A DNP focuses on advanced clinical practice and is suited for advanced practice nurse practitioners. A Ph.D. prepares graduates for careers in research, education, and administration.

Many practicing nurses also need to complete regular continuing education units to maintain their licenses. Requirements vary depending on the state and speciality.

How Do I Choose an Online Master’s of Nursing Degree?

Tuition costs for online MSN programs range from from as little as $13,500 to more than $100,000. Public schools in the state where a student resides may offer the lowest tuition rates, while prestigious private schools tend to charge the highest tuition rates. Keep in mind that some online MSN programs do not charge non-resident tuition fees.

Program Format

Online MSN programs may offer asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid learning formats . Asynchronous learning offers the greatest flexibility by eliminating set class times. Accreditation

Nursing programs accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body ensure the highest educational standards. Additionally, most colleges and universities only accept transfer credits from other accredited schools, and some employers only consider candidates who graduated from an accredited institution and program. To sit for certification exams, nursing students must also hold an accredited degree. Two premier accrediting agencies for nursing programs are the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Clinical Experience

All programs require participants to complete at least 500 clinical hours, although some may require more. Schools may help online students find these opportunities within their state or with their current employer. Population Focus Areas

The adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner population focus area is designed to prepare registered nurses as practitioners for professional practice in the medical, surgical, and critical care management of acutely ill adult patient populations. Graduates may expect to practice in acute and complex care settings in roles such as a hospitalist in a medical-surgical unit or an intensivist in a general or specialty critical care unit.

Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioners function within the interprofessional acute care team providing direct care management including diagnosis and treatment planning. This population focus area also includes an online skills lab that incorporates a virtual reality (VR) headset for a virtual lab experience, allowing you to work remotely with faculty and staff.

The adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner population focus area is designed to educate you on the topics of how to best provide primary care as a member of an interprofessional team and improve the availability of evidence-based, culturally relevant health care in diverse communities. The curriculum helps you develop the skills to evaluate the health and wellness of individuals, families, and their communities.

The nurse practitioner is expected to possess skills in diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic health conditions, delivering primary and preventive care, and participating in the development of appropriate policy and evidence-based practice.

The family nurse practitioner population focus area is designed to educate you on the topics of how to best provide primary care as a member of an interprofessional team and improve the availability of evidence-based, culturally relevant health care in diverse communities. The curriculum helps you develop the skills to evaluate the health and wellness of individuals, families, and their communities.

The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner population focus area is designed for master’s prepared nurses who want to obtain further knowledge to provide comprehensive psychiatric mental health care through the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of psychiatric mental health disorders, medical organic brain disorders, substance abuse problems, and complex co-occurring disease processes and disorders across the lifespan.

Graduates may expect to practice in acute care and primary care settings in hospitals, community mental health centers, home health care, partial hospital care, residential settings, prisons, or private practices as well as in collaborative practices with other specialties.

Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners function within the interprofessional acute care or primary care team providing direct care management including diagnosis, treatment planning, conducting therapy, prescribing psychotropic medications, and providing emergency psychiatric services. This population focus area also incorporates a virtual reality (VR) headset for a virtual lab experience to augment and enhance concepts presented in the program.

Concentrations

The executive leader concentration is designed to prepare you to pursue managerial positions and leadership roles in hospitals, community health, long-term care facilities, and other health care systems. The program focuses on the principles of personnel management, policy development and implementation, budgeting, and the use of information technology.

The nurse educator concentration prepares nurses to effectively teach patients and their families, create staff development, and evaluate educational programs.
