Step 1 Avoid a monochromatic color scheme.

  • When you're planning meals, think ahead about the colors you want to feature on the plate. You might not be able to represent all the colors of the rainbow at every meal, but challenge yourself to have as much color as possible.
  • If you realize you're about to serve several like-colored foods, like grilled chicken and mashed potatoes, adding a serving or two of fruits and vegetables is a fantastic and easy way to add pops of color. The richest greens, oranges, reds, purples, blues, pinks, and yellows on your plate probably take the form of fruits and vegetables.
  • If you're not sure how to add color, utilize garnishes. [3] X Research source Nearly any savory dish is well-served by a sprinkling of fresh chives, parsley, dill, or mint. Lemon and lime wedges are welcome alongside poultry and seafood dishes.

Step 2 Bring out vegetables' brightest colors.

  • Lightly steam them instead of boiling them. [4] X Research source Steaming vegetables makes them look appetizing and flavorful, while boiling creates the opposite effect. [5] X Research source Take broccoli, for instance: steaming broccoli turns it a fresh, bright green, and each floret retains its shape and texture. Boiling broccoli results in a mushy texture and a paler color, which isn't as pretty on the plate. The same holds true for asparagus, carrots, green beans, and many other vegetables.
  • Roast or sauté them with a little oil or butter. Roasted or sauteed vegetables look quite appetizing when they're allowed to caramelize a little in oil or butter. The bright orange or green of the vegetable is offset by brown, crispy spots. It's a delicious way to cook vegetables.

Step 3 Sear your meat and let it rest.

  • There are exceptions to the rule of searing your meat. For example, if you're serving braised beef , you'll have to think of creative ways to make the meat look appetizing even though it doesn't have a crispy crust. Serving it with a sauce is a good way to add visual interest.

Step 4 Cook fried foods carefully.

  • Fried foods often continue browning a bit after they've been removed from the hot oil. Carefully monitor foods as you're frying them to make sure they don't get too dark.
  • Take pains to handle the fried foods gently so they look appetizing when you're ready to plate them. For example, if you need to check whether a piece of fried chicken has reached the correct internal temperature, stick the meat thermometer in a place where the resulting hole won't be visible. Step 5 Take texture into account.

  • The way you handle the food just after it has been cooked, and before it is plated, can really affect the texture. Pasta, for example, should be kept in water or tossed in a bit of oil just after cooking so that it doesn't start to clump. [9] X Research source Fried foods should not be covered with airtight lids because the heat from the food will end up steaming the breading and causing the food to get soggy.
  • Once the food is on the plate, a spritz of oil or water can improve its visual appeal if it looks too dry.

Step 6 Experiment with interesting shapes.

Step 1 When in doubt, choose white plates.

  • That said, there are exceptions. If you have a set of special plates with a pattern or a certain color scheme, it's fine to use them. Just make sure they complement the food you're serving instead of vying for attention.
  • Don't forget to take the rest of the table into consideration, too. Cutlery, glasses, and linens will enhance the overall appearance of the dish upon the table.
  • When looking for interesting tableware, try going to Asian grocery stores, craft or flea markets, and antique stores. You can find some very interesting tableware from all of these sources.

Step 2 Visualize the finished plate.

  • As a general rule, half of the food on the plate should be comprised of vegetables, one fourth should be comprised of meat or another protein, and one fourth should be comprised of a starch.
  • Start plating food in the center of the dish and work outward from there so that the food is centered in the middle of the plate.

Step 4 Follow the rule of odds.

  • To quickly add some crunch to a dish, try topping it with some crushed, roasted walnuts, almonds or pepitas.
  • A dollop of crème fraiche or some pieces of goat cheese can add a soft, creamy texture to savory dishes. Whipped cream or pastry cream is a good way to add a soft element to sweet dishes.

Step 6 Layer foods to add height.

  • An easy way to start layering food is to serve the protein on a bed of starch. For example, serve a kabob on a heaping of rice, or serve grilled swordfish on a pile of mashed potatoes.
  • You can use sauces to layer as well. Ladle a pool of au jus, marinara, or whatever sauce you're using into the center of the dish, and arrange the other elements of the dish on top.
  • Aim to make foods look bigger, not smaller. Fluff up your salads, for example, instead of smoothing them down. Create a little cross-hatched stack of cooked asparagus instead of presenting it in one flat layer. [17] X Research source

Step 1 Use garnishes that enhance the flavor of the meal.

  • If you serve a dish with lemon or lime wedges, consider creating slender, pretty twists instead of slicing them into thick wedges. This might entice the diner to actually use the garnish instead of scooting it to the side of his or her plate!
  • Think outside the box and use garnishes you might not normally consider. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon over a chicken dish, or a handful of pomegranate seeds over an otherwise ordinary salad. Choose garnishes that add a burst of both flavor and color.
  • In many cuisines, flowers are an acceptable garnish or a large inedible leaf sitting underneath the food. In broader Western culture, it's recommended that nothing inedible be served on the plate. As well, since certain garnishes can affect the flavor, choose carefully.

Step 2 Employ drizzles and swirls.

  • Rather than just pouring a sauce over your food, consider putting it in a squeeze bottle so you can create a pretty swirl or pattern. [19] X Research source If you don't have a squeeze bottle, put the sauce in a plastic food storage bag, cut a small piece off one of the corners, and squeeze the sauce through the bag.
  • Don't overdo it. The key is to add a touch of color, flavor, and texture without overpowering the main part of the dish.

Step 3 Make sure the plate is clean.

  • If you're serving the pasta with a protein, arrange it attractively on the heap of pasta. For example, if the dish includes shrimp, place the shrimp on top instead of burying the pieces inside the pasta heap.
  • Just before serving, you can mist the pasta with a bit of olive oil to make it glisten attractively.

Step 2 Present

  • Soups and stews tend to splash and run, so it's also important to make sure that the sides of the bowl or plate you're serving them in are wiped clean before serving.
  • Casseroles might also come out on the brown side. Serving them alongside a bunch of fresh salad greens is a good way to offset the neutral-looking main dish.

Step 3 Enhance desserts that taste better than they look.

  • Use a cookie cutter to create a neat shape. A star or leaf-shaped brownie will look more interesting than your basic square.
  • Serve it with mint. Adding a few fresh sprigs is a great way to enhance many desserts, especially fruity ones.
  • Sprinkle cocoa, cinnamon or powdered sugar on top. Choose the powder that contrasts in color to the dessert you made.
  • Sprinkle crushed peppermints on top. It'll look like you topped your dish with pink glitter.
  • Speaking of glitter, add edible glitter to the dish to take it over the top.
  • When all else fails, plate it with a swirl of whipped cream. [23] X Research source You can pipe it through an icing bag fixed with a star-shaped tip to create a visually pleasing shape.

I’ve learned that food presentation is just as important as taste. When it comes to creating memorable dishes that wow customers. While taste is paramount, how the food looks on the plate is almost equally as important.

The visual presentation delights customers’ eyes before they even take their first bite. An artful presentation demonstrates care, creativity, and skill. It can turn an enjoyable meal into an unforgettable dining experience.

In this blog post, I’ll share my tips and tricks for plating and presenting dishes. I’ve been a chef for 20-plus years and have learned a thing or two about plating food. Master these techniques to wow patrons and create Instagram-worthy culinary artwork with every meal.

Food Presentation Plating Like A Pro

Throughout my career as a chef, I’ve come to view each plate as a blank canvas. Waiting to be turned into an edible work of art. While the flavors and textures of a dish are crucial, elegant, and enticing.

The presentation takes the meal to the next level, delighting customers and showing them you’ve put care into every component. As any successful chef knows, food presentation and plating skills are well worth developing .

Start With Quality Ingredients

Truly, exceptional ingredients make the job easier. The freshest, properly butchered proteins and peak seasonal produce. They showcase their natural beauty with minimal preparation required. While technique is important, sourcing the best seasonal ingredients gives you an advantage.

Focus on Color And Contrast

One of the keys to eye-catching presentations is playing with vibrant colors and bold contrasts. I like to feature ingredients with bright natural hues like:

  • Deep Greens — Spinach, arugula, fresh herbs, lettuce leaves, zucchini, fresh peas, and green beans.
  • Rich Reds — Fresh tomatoes, red bell peppers, English radishes, red beets, radicchio, red leaf lettuce, and sliced red meats cooked med-rare.
  • Sunny Yellows — Squash, yellow zucchini, golden beets, corn, and yellow beans.
  • Earthy Browns — Mushrooms, jacket potatoes, taro, Jerusalem artichokes, and seared or slow-cooked meats.

Contrasting colors help each component stand out. For example, I’ll place a seared med rare red meat like beef rump next to arugula or roasted potatoes to make both stand out. Varying colors excite the eyes and spark joy on the plate.

Chefs Pro Tip — Use colorful ingredients to your advantage. Don’t complicate the process, when preparing each ingredient keep it fresh and simple. You will be amazed at what plating designs you can create.

Find Inspiration In Nature

I find endless inspiration for plating designs by observing the visual beauty inherent in nature. Notice compositions like seashell spirals, patterns in flower petals, or leaves fanned on a platter. Mimicking nature’s artistry through food is a constant source of ideas.

Allow Simplicity To Shine

Sometimes simple is best if I don’t overcomplicate a presentation . When the star ingredients speak for themselves. A pristinely seared fillet of salmon needs little more than an herb oil drizzle and chive garnish to impress. Allow quality ingredients and elegant simplicity to shine when appropriate.

Draw Plating Inspiration From Anywhere

I find plating inspiration almost everywhere. Nature, artwork, and even well-designed retail displays. Study what paints a pleasing visual picture and think about how to replicate it on the plate. Inspiration is endless for those with observant, creative eyes.

Pay Attention To Shapes And Height

When conceptualizing a dish, I always consider the natural shapes and heights of each element I’m including. Mixing and balancing the shapes and vertical dimensions makes the presentation more dynamic.

For instance, balls of zucchini are cut using a melon baller. Potatoes are cut into rectangular shapes. Spears of grilled asparagus can provide vertical lines next to rounded potato rosti. Or combine the height of a vegetable salad with the low profile of a sliced seared beef. Defining individual shapes gives a satisfying composition.

Food Presentation Go Vertical

Height adds drama and excitement to plated dishes. I build upwards with stacked ingredients like potato gratin, blanched broccolini, and a confit duck leg placed on top. Salads become more dynamic when ingredients are arranged vertically rather than tossed haphazardly across the plate. Reaching upwards with towers and heights naturally draws the diner’s eye in.

Incorporate Odd Numbers

When garnishing and portioning ingredients. Odd numbers do wonders when it comes to food presentation. Artful plating incorporates variety. Odd numbers of components like three ravioli or five haricots verts are more interesting than even pairs. The unevenness creates movement and delights the eye as it flows across the plate.

Play With Proportions

I carefully consider proportion when food presentation is the focus. The star of the dish is featured prominently with supporting sides artfully framed around. For example, an ample tenderloin takes center stage while the potatoes and vegetables are thoughtfully portioned as accents. Getting the proportions just right ensures an ideal bite each time.

Leave Negative Space

Don’t overcrowd or clutter the plate. I remind myself to leave ample negative space between the ingredients and leading up to the edges of plates and dishes. Negative space focuses the diner’s attention exactly where you want it. It also allows you to thoughtfully frame each component within the surrounding clean plate.

Consider Texture Contrasts

Beyond colors and shapes, textures add tactile variety and entice the appetite. I purposely pair contrasting textures like the juiciness of fresh tomato against the creaminess of mashed potatoes. A crispy crystalized chicken skin is another favorite. Varying textures excite both the palate and presentation.

Drizzle With Intent

One of my favorite plating techniques is taking advantage of the beautiful trail left when sauces and vinaigrettes are artfully drizzled onto the plate. I get creative with smears, straight lines, dots, and other patterns to adorn proteins or seasonal vegetables. Drizzling brings elegance through both taste and presentation.

Garnish With A Purpose

No plated dish is complete without a perfect garnish. Sprigs of fresh herbs, edible flowers, chopped nuts, and microgreens. These are my go-to garnishes to provide the final touch. I carefully select and position garnishes to complement other components. This is like a frame that completes a painting. This thoughtful detail finishes the food presentation.

In my view, the best plating tells a thoughtful story. The ingredients, flavors, and preparation involved in crafting the meal are conveyed through a harmonious arrangement. Seasonality and passion come across in the details. This storytelling instills pride and attention to detail in my cooking.

Experiment With Plate Styles

An often overlooked plating tip is choosing plates, boards, and surfaces that complement the food. Patterns on plates can frame simply presented dishes. Wooden boards offer rustic charm while sleek slate can modernize a presentation. I get creative with my “canvas” to enhance the overall dining experience.

Develop Your Own Style

Just like with cooking techniques, plating has recognizable styles. Find what you love by looking at inspirational photos and experimenting. Over time, my personal plating preferences emerged into my signature style. Then I refined and perfected it. Maybe you prefer minimalist plates or architectural presentations. Your unique style is part of the art.

Practice Plating At Home

Even during home-cooked family meals, I practice plating in ways that feel fun and creative. The more you deliberately compose dishes with care, the more second nature beautiful presentation becomes. Use low-stakes at-home meals to hone your skills.

Invest In Quality Tools

Having quality tools at your fingertips facilitates plating success. I recommend investing in small spoons, tweezers, squeeze bottles, a melon baller, and other specialty items. The right kitchen tools allow you to intricately stack, drizzle, and embellish with ease. They’re essential for every aspiring platter.

Here are some of the common plating mistakes to avoid. Crowding the plate, not leaving negative space. Lack of color contrast, sloppy or uneven drizzles. Overcomplicating the presentation, and poor proportions that don’t highlight the star ingredient.

A common mistake I see when cooks are plating food is the lack of height. They place everything on the plate which makes the dish look one-dimensional and boring. Another common mistake I see is minimal to no garnishes.

How Do I Come Up With Unique Plating Ideas?

Ways of coming up with unique plating ideas are drawing inspiration from nature, artwork, and other chef’s plating ideas. Also, telling a story about the dish’s flavor profiles can guide the presentation.

Maybe it was an expertly crafted uramaki roll with razor thin avocado slices, a dusting of panko, a drizzle of unagi eel sauce, and a ginger-wasabi rose embellishing the plate’s rim. Important considerations to make regarding the element of appearance include the color, size, and pattern or texture of the plate.

It may be especially helpful to look at the plating and presentation process as generally following a series of steps. This starts with choosing a plate, then deciding how the main dish and core sides are arranged or layered. From there, it’s common to move onto sauces to create visual contrast and shapes that aren’t easily rendered with more solid food. Finally, the garnish provides a finishing touch.

Bright colors work well against a dark background, while more neutral or subdued colors can use a white background to create some visual excitement. Besides the colors of the foods, different techniques for adding color might include the use of sauces, spices, and garnishes like fruits or flowers.

Top Chefs Share Their 10 Food Presentation and Plating Techniques

Do food presentation and plating techniques actually matter?

In short, yes. 

The way you present your food is what tempts customers to try a dish. We eat with our senses: what we see, smell, and feel.  And in the age of Instagrammers and food bloggers, plating techniques and food presentation matters more than ever. 

A study from Oxford gastrophysicist, Professor Charles Spence , suggests that the food presentation can actually make a dish taste better. 

In the study, Spence gave 60 people 3 salads and asked them to rate each one before and after they ate them.  The salads each used the same ingredients but presented them in different ways. One salad was put together with no regard given to presentation, one was neatly arranged, and the third was plated to resemble a painting by artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Can you guess which salad diners liked best? 

It was the salad that resembled a painting. 

Diners thought it tasted better (29% tastier to be precise), even though it used the exact same ingredients.  Spence’s study concluded that consumers were willing to spend as much as three times more on a well-plated dish. 

Even basic dishes like a salad can benefit from thoughtful presentation—it makes the dish seem more appetising and valuable.

We talked to chefs Daniel England, Joyce Tang, Tanner Agar, Jim Solomon, Michael Welch, and Brian Poe to learn their favourite food presentation and plating techniques. Each technique focuses on five key food presentation factors: colour, arrangement, balance, texture, and how easy it is for guests to eat.

1. Create height on the plate

Daniel England, corporate chef with San Diego’s OMG Hospitality Group , likes to create height as he plates food.

“It’s important that you don’t separate the food trying to fill the plate—build from the bottom up,” he says. “If you could use a little structure, you can always purchase a ring mould to start with a base. Simply pack some food in the mould and gently lift it up. Now you have a base to build on.” 

2. Cut meat horizontally

England also recommends “fanning” or shingling out slices of meat to show off its quality.

“Slice your meats on a 45-degree bias, and also slice against the grain of the meat for a more tender cut,” he says. “Show off that perfect medium-rare steak!” 

3. Play with textures

Joyce Tang, chief baking officer at Oakland, California’s La Chinoserie , suggests playing with textures, foams, and sauces to make the dish look more interesting.

“I like to play up contrasting textures on my plate,” she adds. “Foams are usually really helpful in plating and can be really easily done, playing around with different sauces and textures.” 

4. Use contrasting colours

Tang also stresses the importance of playing with contrasting colours. She avoids artificial colours and uses matcha, powdered sugar, or natural colours to catch the eye instead. 

“The way you present your food is hyper-important” she adds. “The more time you spend on how you present each dish, the more visual interest you can stimulate in folks.” 

Tanner Agar, owner and chief experience officer at Rye Restaurant in McKinney, Texas, echos that sentiment.

Agar recommends using bold colours to create appealing visuals. “The easiest way to add colour is to start working with more colourful ingredients. Items like carrots, potatoes, cauliflower, lettuces, beans, and more come in a variety of gorgeous colours,” he says. “The difference a purple cauliflower puree makes on a plate is striking.”

5. Match food presentation to your restaurant theme

Jim Solomon, chef and former owner of The Fireplace in Brookline, Massachusetts, says that the style of plating should match the restaurant’s atmosphere.

“Small ethnic restaurants, where it appears grandma is cooking in the kitchen, can’t serve plates that try to emphasise vertical, architectural compositions,” he says. 

“Your guests expect a simple, welcoming presentation that stresses straightforward flavour cooked with heart and served with an unfussy, rustic quality. At relatively pricey, hip and high-end restaurants, guests want to see a degree of artistry and care taken in constructing the dishes.”

The way you plate your food should directly reflect your restaurant type. 

Solomon adds that “food should have an element of height or visual texture, the balance of colour and thoughtful garnishes—both carefully placed and intentional in flavour and texture.”

6. Choose the right plates

Michael Welch, the executive chef at Backyard Kitchen & Tap in Pacific Beach, California, preaches using the right plate-size, colour, and style. The colour of plate matters as the plate serves as the canvas for your food. 

“Typically, chefs will stay away from blue plates as there isn’t any naturally blue food and it is thought to be an unappetising colour,” he says. “If you have something with a lot of vibrant colour, it might stand out better on a white plate.”

Jim Solomon echos the importance of choosing the right vessel to present your dish. “Choose a dish vessel that makes it easy for your guest to eat. This is also an opportunity for your chefs to show their personality in the dishes they create.” 

7. Serve smaller portion sizes

Smaller portion sizes were named by the National Restaurant Association as one of the top five hottest restaurant concepts for 2019. 

Of course, you still want to serve enough food to satisfy your guests and portion sizes can vary depending on the type of establishment you’re operating, but smaller portions are typically easier to style. 

Stick to no more than six elements on each dish to prevent them from looking overcrowded.

8. Use edible garnishes and decorations

Garnishes and decorations are a great way of styling your dish, but there are some guidelines you should follow when using them.

Whatever you use—whether it’s a herb, spice, or a flower—it needs to be edible. Everything on your plate should be placed with the intention of elevating the dishes taste first, and the way it looks second. 

9. When in doubt, keep it simple

Michael Welch also emphasises the value of simplicity. 

“Overcrowding the plate with unnecessary oils or spices or microgreens just takes away from the food you worked so hard to make,” he explains. “Subtraction is your best ingredient.” 

Rather than piling on a zillion garnishes or swirls of sauce, let the quality of the cooking speak for itself. 

“A properly seared steak with some fresh watercress and perfectly roasted baby potatoes will look better than the fanciest of plates with subpar cookery,” Welch says. “Proper cooking will give you a lot of contrast within your ingredients with both texture and colour.” 

10. Express yourself

There’s an art in plating food; it’s where chefs can allow themselves to be creative and have a high impact on how guests perceive the dishes they’re eating. 

Chef Brian Poe of Bukowski Tavern in Cambridge, and Parish Café and Tip Tap Room in Boston, believes that chefs should approach food presentation and plating just as an artist would approach their next piece. 

“Presentation should be approached just like art, cooking, and music,” says Poe. “Take a moment to relax and look at what the others are doing, learn a bit of the technique and then find your own voice and style.”

One of Poe’s favourite approaches is to go “Jackson Pollock,” holding out the plate like a canvas and splattering it with sauce. “Other times we might look toward a more linear approach with could either be Picasso or street graffiti style,” he adds. “Other times the negative space technique might work.”

Select one ingredient to focus on and use space to simplify the presentation. Clutter distracts from the main elements of your dish and might make it confusing for the diners to figure out what to focus on.

3. Balance the dish

Play with colours, shapes and textures to ensure diners are not overwhelmed. The presentation should never overpower flavour and function.

4. Get the right portion size

Ensure that there is the right amount of ingredients, and that the plate complements the dish – not too big or small. Strike the right proportion of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables to create a nutritionally balanced meal.

How to arrange food on plate

Using the clock analogy, this is how you should arrange individual food items:

  • Main: Between 3 to 9 o’clock
  • Starch: Between 9 to 11 o’clock
  • Vegetables: Between 11 to 3 o’clock

How to Plate Asian dishes

Asian dishes are unique in look, style and how they are eaten. Take note of these tips and plate your Asian dishes accordingly.

Communal

Sharing food is common in Asian culture.

Though slightly more challenging to plate, you can still use aesthetically pleasing garnishes and interesting bowls or containers (such as steamboats, dim sum baskets and even banana leaves) to heighten the food’s presentation.

A perfectly plated dish can upgrade your meal immensely. Through the strategic placing of ingredients, you will automatically view the meal as a high-value. You’re also more likely to enjoy the taste and hold a higher opinion of the meal.

Plating the perfect dish is both an art and a science. Chefs and cooking enthusiasts must explore their creativity and play with color and texture while placing foods to create a visual appeal.

Your plate’s size should be large enough so your meal doesn’t crowd the plate, yet small enough to make the portion sizes look fairly filling but not too small. Now that you have your canvas, it’s time to make some art. The placement of your ingredients is crucial for a perfect plate. This is where scientific facts come in to create aesthetically pleasing dishes.

The Clock Guidelines

Pretend your plate is a clock. Imagine the numbers along the edges to help guide where you should place certain foods. By following these rules, your meal will be evenly plated.

  • Between 12 and 3, you should plate your vegetables.
  • Between 3 and 9 is where your meat will sit.
  • Between 9 and 12, you’ll present any starches included in the meal.

Stay Symmetrical

According to science, people find things that are symmetrical more attractive than asymmetrical. Use this principle to your advantage and make sure that your plate boasts symmetry.

Utilize White Space

The fact is presentation matters, and like a well-tailored suit can help you nail that big interview, a beautifully plated dish can help elevate your next dinner party to a full-on soiree. Simply paying a little extra attention to how your meal looks is the added touch that really wows dinner guests. Even if you’re cooking for just one, plating is a clever and creative way to upgrade any meal, treat yourself, and entice your appetite.

Just walk through any professional restaurant kitchen or restaurant, and you’ll see throngs of chefs meticulously placing tiny flourishes on each plate, decorating it with utter precision and intricate detail. So much of their craft is dedicated to presentation and plating that they’ve spent years studying the art of food decor. However, you don’t need to go to culinary school to learn how to dazzle with a dish. With these 11 food presentation hacks, you can learn how to plate like a pro without the hefty tuition. A little flourish of raspberry puree, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, a ton of melted chocolate, and some staple kitchen tools can go a long way if you know how to use them. There are so many fancy and innovative ways to dress up your dinner, here are a few of our favorites:

Chocolate Web

Directions:

Use a lighter to melt along the longest side of a chocolate bar. Use melted sign as a stamp to create perfectly straight lines on your plate. Repeat the action forming a chocolate web pattern on the plate. Finish with macarons and berries.

Raspberry Flower

On a plain plate draw 8 raspberry puree dots forming a circle. Using a spoon draw the swirls to the center of a plate creating the petals. Place a berry tart in the center of a flower.

Apple Cutter Surprise

Bring in a paper towel and cover 1 half of a plate. Bring in an apple cutter and place on top of a paper towel. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the plate. Remove apple cutter and paper towel. Place a swiss roll slice on the opposite side of the powdered sugar pattern. Decorate the plate with fresh raspberries.

Eel Sauce Sine Graph

Dip potato masher in eel sauce and imprint masher on a plate. Finish with sushi, ginger, and wasabi.

Double Swirl

Squeeze chocolate sauce and raspberry puree dots on the edge of a wide soup plate. Using a skewer draw the swirl according to the technique. Decorate with raspberry cheesecake in the center of a plate.

Toasted marshmallow tree

Place a ring mold on a plate. Fill it with marshmallow fluff. Remove the ring mold. Press the marshmallow circle with a cast iron skillet. Remove the skillet and torch marshmallow fluff. Decorate with a S’mores Tart.

Glass Bowl Trick

Dip a medium size glass bowl into a raspberry jam. Place the bowl on a plate. Sprinkle freeze dried raspberries over the plate. Remove the glass bowl and decorate the plate with cheesecake.

Multifunctional spaghetti

Dip a bunch of spaghetti in chocolate sauce and imprint them on a plate. Decorate the plate with chocolate cheesecake, macarons, and chocolate truffle candies.

Levitating chocolate

Place a chocolate cupcake in the center of a short wine glass. Cover the top with saran wrap and seal the edges of a wrap to the glass walls. Cut the sides of saran wrap. Pour melted chocolate over the saran wrap creating the chocolate levitation effect.

Sunshine circle

Squeeze lemon curd on a plate drawing a circle. Using a fork make the pattern in a circle. Finish with macarons, edible flowers, and lemon cheesecake.

Raspberry hearts

Squeeze small raspberry puree dots forming a half circle. Using a toothpick draw the line creating the shape of small hearts. Decorate the plate with strawberry cake piece, fresh raspberries, meringue cookies.

FINDING THE RIGHT PLATE

Which plate you choose can make or break your dish, says South African Chef Jack Coetzee. Try to avoid symmetry, it’s not very interesting. And you need to create some height on your plate. However, if you are blatantly going for symmetry,  then you can get away with it because it’s your intention. Here are a couple of take-outs he shares on the different shapes of plates you can use and their possibilities to present your food.

Using a rectangualr plate is effective if you have lots of small little garnishes that can wind their way through the length of the plate, making it look like a garden.

This is not the easiest shape to work with. You have to use the Rule of Thirds, which is a theory dictating how an image (in this case your plate) should be composed in order to create an aesthetically pleasing result. You basically break your plate up into a grid system of 9 block and try to avoid using the bull’s eye itself because that’s a so-called dead spot. Also try not to use any of the spots in the corners.

These are most commonly used. The same rule applies to your grid system on this plate, except you don’t have to worry about all the dead corners. Try not to get anything in the middle unless it’s deliberately in the middle.

1. Avoid overloading the plates

2. Alternate forms and volumes

How to Make Your Food Presentation Simple and Tasteful

Food presentation is important because it influences our perception of the food itself. It also affects our appetite and mood. Presentations can either enhance or detract from the taste of the food.

Food presentation should be simple and tasteful. The goal is to create a visual feast that enhances the flavor of the food rather than distracts from it. Good food presentation will help you get your message across.

In this article, we’ll explain how to choose the right plate shape for presenting foods, why some plates work better than others and what tips to keep in mind when creating your perfect presentation.

Choose the Right Plate Shape

There are many shapes of plates that you can use to present food. You have round, square, rectangular, oval, oblong, triangular and even hexagonal plates available to you. Each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

  • Round plates tend to be the most popular type of plate for presenting meals. It’s easy to move around with them and they’re great if you want to display a large number of dishes at once. However, since they commonly lack any side walls, serving a smaller amount of food can look awkward. No matter if you cook yourself or use a catering service, round plates are useful when you want to show off multiple dishes at once.
  • Rectangular plates can be narrower than other types of plates. This means that dishes are easier to serve and it’s easy to balance them and move around with them. Rectangular plates are also good if you want to place two or three dishes next to each other.
  • Square plates are wide enough to accommodate more food per dish, but since they don’t extend all the way up to the top edge, there’s no room for sauces or garnishes. That may not matter much if you plan to serve only one type of dish, but if you offer a variety of different flavors on a single platter, you won’t have room for anything else. Square plates are best for platters where you’ll be placing small amounts of various foods on a single plate.
  • Oval plates are similar to square ones except that they have a wider bottom portion which allows them to hold a larger quantity of food. Oval plates are designed to support multiple servings of food. Ovals can carry as many as 10-12 items on a single plate. They come in both standard sizes and custom sizes. Your choice is based on how big your meal is going to be.
  • Triangle plates are ideal for those who want to maximize space while minimizing clutter. If the triangles aren’t symmetrical, they won’t stack neatly into piles or towers. But they do fit well together on a single surface. Triangles are especially helpful if you want to include lots of food. If you don’t fill every inch of the plate with food, then triangles can help you save space without sacrificing organization.
  • Hexagons add a special design twist to the other classic plate shapes. They can be easier to grip than round plates but allow for generous servings of food. They can also work to keep food warmer when they have a concave design that creates a gentle convex curve along their edges.

What Size Plate Should I Buy?

If you already have some plates you can use and you only need to pick up a few extras, then try to find the closest match to the plates you already have in your cupboard. If you’re picking up a whole new set, especially if it’s for a dinner party, know that it’s always safer to go with something bigger than you think you’ll need.

In addition to knowing how many people will be eating, you should also consider how large the dishes that you’ll be serving are. Large dishes require larger plates and vice versa. A cauliflower steak , for example, can measure about 6 by 5 inches (15 x 13 cm). You’ll be able to fit four steaks on a 12-inch (30cm) round plate. 

The same dish would look too big if you tried to put it on a 14-inch (35cm) oval plate. Similarly, a large round of eggplant is about 4 by 3 inches (10 x 8 cm), so it would look out of place on a 12-inch round plate. And although a salad bowl is roughly 9 inches (23cm) across, you could actually use two bowls side by side to create a 20-inch round plate.

You’ll find most restaurants serving appetizers, salads, sides, main dishes, desserts like cakes , etc., on separate platters. This allows diners to choose just the portions they want. Large platters are great for parties because you can reuse them over and over again. When it comes to storing leftovers , serving bowls are more ideal than platters. 

In addition to the size of the plates, consider the materials they’re made with, as well. Disposables are handy, but not great for the environment. In contrast, wooden platters are gorgeous, but more difficult to wash because they tend to get stained easily. On average, disposable platters cost only $1-$2 per person. However, you may also want to consider investing in stainless steel or ceramic platters. Although these types of platters are much pricier than disposables, they offer superior durability and long-lasting quality.

Tips for Making Your Food Presentation Ideal

It’s easy to see the difference between perfectly arranged food and food that looks sloppy. Here are some tips for making sure that your food presentation is perfect:

Use Good Lighting

Lighting is essential for cooking and entertaining, but it can also enhance the aesthetics of your food. Try to choose lighting that highlights different parts of your dish. Lighting from the side with some low candles gives a warm effect. Keep the lighting even across the table and avoid deep shadows.

Keep Your Tableware Organized 

Food shouldn’t be stacked randomly all over the room. Make sure that your serving pieces are stored at a proper height and position so that each course is within reasonable reach and always within sight of guests.

Make Sure That Your Serving Pieces Match or Complement Each Other 

The type of serving pieces you use says a lot about your overall style. Not all of us were lucky enough to inherit a full set of matching antique dishes, but it’s still a good idea to put together an ensemble of serving pieces that creates a unified effect. Multiple different types of genomic variants can cause human disease. Expansions of short tandem repeats (STRs) are a classic example. In this issue of the European Journal of Human Genetics, we have an up to date review on the topic of STRs [ 1 ]. STRs compose around 3% of the human genome. Due to their repetitive nature, STRs are prone to slippage, with expansion or contraction. STRs are among the most mutable elements of the human genome. The review summarises the role of STRs in population genetics, human disease and methods for detecting and sizing STRs. Fascioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD1) is associated with contractions in the D4Z4 repeat array. Vishnu et report the contraction range in Indian FSHD patients [ 2 ]. Long read sequencing can be used to size STRs and detect other challenging variant classes. For example, detecting HYDIN variants in primary ciliary dyskinesia is challenging due to the presence of the HYDIN2 pseudogene [ 3 ]. Long read sequencing can be used to detect cryptic HYDIN variants, as described in this issue.

Chromosome deletions are a well studied class of pathogenic variants. 9p deletion syndrome is clinically heterogeneous, associated with varying deletion size. In this issue, the method of “unique non-overlapping regions” is used to draw genotype-phenotype correlations in a group of 9p deletion patients with breakpoints mapped by genome sequencing [ 4 ]. This analysis supported a role for FREM1 deletion and trigonocephaly.

Novel genomic technologies have transformed our ability to diagnose rare genetic conditions. Faye et al. report a survey of people living with rare disease (plwRD) in Europe [ 5 ]. The length of time it takes to achieve a diagnosis is one of the biggest challenges facing plwRD. The average time delay to diagnosis is 4.7 years in Europe. PlwRD who had onset of symptoms early in life tended to have longer diagnostic delays. Sixty-five percent of plwRD reported having to consult between 2 and 7 clinicians before obtaining a diagnosis. This paper also highlighted some of the benefits of receiving a diagnosis for a plwRD. Exome and genomic technologies can clearly reduce diagnostic delays. Bhatia et al. report the role of next generation sequencing in facilitating rapid diagnoses in neonates [ 6 ]. Most rare genetic conditions are primarily diagnosed in paediatric populations, and the clinical descriptions derive from these. In this issue, the adult presentation of Myhre syndrome is reported. Overweight and obesity are reported as common associations of Myhre syndrome [ 7 ]. Joint conditions were frequent as was diabetes and hypertension. Over 2/3 had intellectual disability. Exome and genome sequencing have identified a broader phenotypic spectrum of mendelian disorders. Sentell et al report an adult with isolated renal disease and biallelic variants in CC2D2A [ 8 ]. Variants in this gene are more typically associated with a ciliopathy spectrum. Paulet et al. provide a report expanding the clinical phenotypic spectrum of EEF1A2 variants [ 9 ]. Initial reports of the clinical presentations of this condition emphasised severe neurodevelopmental delay and epilepsy. The expanded cohort published in this issue of EJHG demonstrated a much milder phenotype; many were walking and had developed speech, compared to a much lower frequency of attaining these milestones reported in the literature. They also suggest genotype-phenotype correlations for mild versus severe phenotypes.

Using genomic technologies to identify gene variants that might cause disease in future is entirely different to the diagnostic setting for unwell individuals. Current proposals are to use whole genome sequencing to perform newborn screening. Parfett assesses the views of children and young people on genomic screening [ 10 ]. They held mixed views on the value of newborn genome screening. Positive aspects were around the potential to identify treatable conditions, but there were concerns about concealment of diagnoses and mental health impacts of later disclosure. This work also highlighted the need for more research to understand how to incorporate children and young people into decision making around genomic screening. Secondary findings from exome sequencing done in a diagnostic setting can also be viewed as a form of genomic screening. There is debate around whether secondary findings from paediatric exome tests should be returned; since many will not benefit the child directly. A French study provides strong parental support for return of secondary findings [ 11 ]. This is especially true if they are actionable. The authors note that issues around return of findings for late onset, incurable disease remain a topic for further consideration.

One end goal from the identification of genomic basis of disease is treatment with gene therapies. Ormondroyd et al report the views of cardiology patient communities on gene therapy for cardiomyopathy [ 12 ]. A survey of over 600 people found that over 90% felt gene therapy should be developed. Most would consider taking part in a clinical trial. Respondents were more willing to take part in clinical trials aimed at people with symptomatic cardiomyopathy with greater severity or of progressive nature.

Genomics also contributes to understanding of common diseases. For example, Teder-Laving et al report a genome wide association study of acne vulgaris [ 13 ]. They studied 3 independent European cohorts and confirmed 19 previous loci and identified 4 novel loci. Around 10% of the phenotypic variance of acne is explained by GWAS risk loci. The identified loci also enable them to identify mechanistic pathways involved in acne. Obesity predisposes to many common diseases. Abdominal obesity being of greater risk than peripheral adiposity. A study based on the EPIC-Potsdam cohort identified candidate genes that can potentially influence both body fat mass and distribution [ 14 ].

How to Record a PowerPoint Presentation

Prepare everything

2. Configure settings

Go to " Settings " to set recording preferences .

  • In " Video ", choose the desired output quality and format. Make sure the toggles next to " Record mouse movements " and " Animate mouse clicks " are enabled if needed.
  • In the " Audio " tab, adjust the sound levels and select the desired input devices.

3. Record your presentation

Click the " Capture video " option in the side menu and select the mode. Choose the entire display if your presentation is in full-screen mode. You can also manually adjust the screen recording area to show the desired content.

Open your PowerPoint and press the F7 hotkey or click the " Rec " button to record the presentation with audio . Navigate through your slides while speaking clearly into the microphone.

Use drawing tools in the presentation recorder to highlight key points during your narration.

If you need to take a break, use the pause button to temporarily stop the recording. When you've completed your presentation, press the F8 hotkey or click " Stop ".

4. Editing the final video

Use the built-in video editor to trim any unwanted parts of the presentation recording. You can also adjust the playback speed, change the format, and resize the video.

If you need to make more changes, you can import your recorded clip into third-party video editing software . Add transitions, effects, background music, or other enhancements as needed.

Save your edited video in the desired location. It is also possible to upload the recording to the cloud and share it via a link .

Hot Dog Brands Ranked From Worst To Best

Chicago Style, Seattle Style, covered in chili, slathered in ketchup, grilled, microwaved, boiled — seems like  there are a million ways to prepare a hot dog , and none of them are wrong. Of course, there are also tons of hot dog brands in stores, and deciding which brand to buy is important. To help alleviate the stress of picking the perfect frank, Food Republic sent me on a quest to choose the best hot dog out of 10 common national brands.

And just so you know: I considered trying a veggie dog for this list but my experience with plant-based hot dogs wasn't exactly positive. I'm not here to shame anyone who enjoys vegetarian dogs — even Oscar Mayer is hopping on the meatless train  – but we'll save those for another list.

To secure my wiener lineup, I visited Costco, Walmart, and my local grocery store, Metro Market, a subsidiary of Roundy's Supermarkets, which is owned by Kroger. I grabbed the most standard-looking hot dog options I could find, along with a pack of Ball Park Hot Dog Buns for scale. In evaluating the franks, I quickly learned three things: The term "mechanically-separated meat" is something you simply have to stomach if you want to enjoy a wiener, resealable packages are not popular in the hot dog market, and not all franks are created equal. Read on to find out what brand is the, you know, top dog. 

11. Jennie-O Turkey Franks

As the name suggests, Jennie-O and their Turkey Franks only contain one meat: Mechanically-separated turkey, along with water, and salt. The Jennie-O Turkey Franks are trying really hard to be a good hot dog but mostly failing. They're on the thicker side of the sausages I tried, which might be good if they weren't also incredibly dense. It feels like too much meat is stuffed into the casing — although to be perfectly, well, frank ... there's not really a casing to be found. 

These hot dogs have no snap, and they're rather dry. With the exception of their physical appearance, I'm not sure I'd even call them hot dogs. A "processed turkey link" would be a more apt description for what you get and the generic, unappetizing sound of that really nails the essence of the Jennie-O Turkey Frank. If you don't eat red meat, Turkey Franks might satisfy your hot dog craving, but if you can get your fix elsewhere, I suggest doing so.

10. Bar S Classic Jumbo Franks

Made of mechanically separated chicken, water, corn syrup, salt, and pork, the Bar S Classic Jumbo Frank is forgettable. For one thing, it's not particularly jumbo, coming in as maybe the third-largest of our hot dogs. As with the other mechanically-separated meats, the inside is soft and smooth in texture but lacks the satisfying snap of a good sausage. The flavor isn't bad — but that's because there isn't much flavor in the first place. This feels like the kind of hot dog a parent slides in front of a notoriously picky child to get them to eat something. At best, this sausage is a vehicle for condiments; at worst, it's just plain dull. 

Bar S makes several other hot dog variants, including beef, turkey, and chicken franks. If you're in a bind and need to snag a package of Bar S, try one of those because the Classic Jumbo Franks are best left on the shelf.

9. Vienna Beef Jumbo Beef Franks

This might come as a shock, but beef is the first ingredient in these dogs, followed by water, salt, sugar, dextrose, mustard, flavorings and colorings, garlic juice, sodium erythorbate, and sodium nitrite. As will become evident the further down this list you venture, beef hotdogs tend to be superior. Still, I was left wanting more from Vienna Beef's Jumbo Beef Franks. However, they do live up to their jumbo billing: These are some thick hot dogs.

But this needs to be said: They're slimy straight out of the package. Most hot dogs are packaged in water to keep them moist, but Vienna Beef Franks are coated in a gooey, white substance. I'm not sure what it is, and I can't say I noticed it on the cooked dog, but it is an unsettling beginning to what I'd hoped would be a harmonious relationship. The casing on these franks is too thick, and rather than providing that elusive snap, it's chewy. The flavor is fine, a tad salty, but I couldn't get past the fact that I spent more time chewing the casing than enjoying the meat.

8. Ballpark Bun Size Franks

At some point in human history, the length of hot dogs and the buns they call home diverged. What was once a consistent match has been reduced to a Goldilocks conundrum of hot dogs that are often too big (or too small) for their corresponding buns. But fear not, numerous brands, including Ballpark, offer franks that are just right for their carby, and sometimes toasted, companions . I purchased Ballpark Buns to accompany my hot dogs, so this was truly a perfect fit.

Mechanically-separated chicken, pork, water, corn syrup, and potassium lactate are the main ingredients in Ballpark's Bun Size Franks. (For the sake of space, I've only included the main ingredients in every entry, excluding the ingredients that make up less than 2% of anything.)

These dogs fall into the category of fine but not memorable. The inner texture is almost silky smooth, and the casing is there only to contain what's inside , not to add to or detract from the experience one way or another. Neither too salty nor too bland, if someone handed me a Ballpark Frank, I wouldn't complain, but I also wouldn't go out of my way to grab seconds.

7. Nathan's Beef Franks

Cards on the table, I didn't eat 10 hot dogs in one sitting. That's a lot of franks. Of course, 10 is hardly a drop in the bucket for the participants of the annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. For the superhuman eaters who participate every year, their plates are piled high with Nathan's Beef Franks. With beef and water as the first two ingredients on the list, these dogs feel less processed than their "mechanically-separated" counterparts and are by far the juiciest wieners I sampled.

Despite an underwhelming snap, the flavors are solid, making Nathan's a respectable (but unexciting) hot dog. Visually, Nathan's Franks are almost identical to the Oscar Mayer Wieners, putting them on the smaller side of the hot dog hierarchy, which makes a lot of sense. Joey Chestnut put down 73 of these wieners in his record-setting 2013 performance, and that's impressive — but these are no jumbo dogs. If you're looking to add a little extra something to your Nathan's, make it Coney Island style  with a healthy topping of chili, onions, and mustard.

6. Sugardale Hot Dogs

Believe it or not, these are the only sausages on this list with the words "hot dog" actually in the name. Sugardale Hot Dogs contain mechanically-separated chicken, water, pork, corn syrup, modified food starch, and salt. These franks are on the thicker side and fit a standard bun perfectly.

I'm happy to report that I finally found a hot dog that delivered a bit of snap when I took a bite. The casing that provides the snap is thicker than Ballpark or Nathan's but without the chewiness of Vienna Beef.

Inside, the classic soft, smooth texture of mechanically-separated meat is hard to miss. For anyone taking notes, mechanically-separated meat is not ground meat. The USDA defines it as a  "poultry food product produced by high-pressure machinery that separates bone from poultry skeletal muscle tissue and other edible tissue by first crushing the bone and then forcing bone and tissue through a sieve or a similar screening device." The final product is, "a blend of soft tissue with a paste-like consistency and a cake-batter form."

5. Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners

A staple of American cuisine for more than 100 years, the Oscar Mayer red-and-yellow branding is the first I think of when I hear the words "hot dog." Housed in an easy-open package, Oscar Mayer's Classic Wiener is the most standard-looking hot dog on the market. It's comprised of mechanically-separated chicken, mechanically-separated turkey, pork, water, and corn syrup. Not only do these wieners look like hot dogs, they embody the taste I imagine when I think of a hot dog. It's silky smooth inside, with a savoriness that calls for a bit of ketchup — or, in my case, a lot of ketchup — to bring some sweetness. I grilled my hot dogs for this test, but the Oscar Mayer wiener practically begs to be heated in a microwave and slid before a grinning eight-year-old. 

Maybe it's because my first foray into hot dogs came via Oscar Mayer, or perhaps the brand has really nailed the true essence of the frankfurter, but regardless of how it got there, the Oscar Mayer Classic Wiener is the epitome of a hot dog. However, it's not the most flavorful, juiciest, or substantial — so while I respect a classic, there are better options.

4. Hebrew National Beef Franks

The type of meat used in a hot dog is important when it comes to creating the flavor. This may seem obvious, but there's a stark difference between an all-beef frank and a sausage comprising multiple kinds of meat. Hebrew National Beef Franks are the former and are tied for the shortest ingredient deck of anything on our list: Kosher beef and water. That's it. No additives, no extra flavorings, just meat and water (and 2% or less of other ingredients) and the taste reflects it. These franks are juicy and have a great internal texture. Once again, the casing leaves something to be desired, but it's not chewy, so that's a plus. Hebrew National Franks are long and thin, giving them a distinct look compared especially to the numerous jumbo dogs on the list.

In order for meat to be labeled Kosher, it must be butchered in accordance with Jewish dietary law. Only certain cuts of meat are allowed to be used which, in the case of cattle, come from the front half of the animal. Numerous other requirements, from what the animal eats to the slaughter and preparation of the meat, also define Kosher meats, and for Hebrew National, 100% Kosher is key. The result is a juicy hot dog that lands in my top three.

3. Ambassador Old Fashioned Wieners

Pork is often the second or third meat listed in the ingredients, but Ambassador flipped the script by making pork the centerpiece of their wieners. Joining pork is water, beef, and dextrose in a neat and tidy ingredient deck.

The first bite is what catapulted the Ambassador Wiener up my rankings. There was a distinct snap, almost a crunch, to the hot dog's casing, and from there, the unique taste of the dog sprung forth. Across the board, the beef hot dogs I sampled were saltier than their chicken and turkey-based counterparts. The Ambassador's pork-forward frank perfectly straddles the middle ground between the two. It's juicy and flavorful with a texture inside that's smoother than beef, but more meaty than mechanically-separated poultry. It's also lighter in color than any of the others, giving it a look, taste, and feel more akin to a kielbasa than a more traditional wiener. In a world full of beef and poultry-based dogs, the Ambassador went pork first and is all the better for it.

2. Kirkland Beef Dinner Franks

While some pictures are worth a thousand words, this one is worth at least six: This is a huge hot dog. Made famous by Costco's food court , where you can snag one for just $1.50, this is one of two Kirkland-branded hot dogs. I chose to review the Beef Dinner Franks because they're a bit different from the other test subjects thanks to their size and notoriety. Plus, they're sold in a 14-pack, rather than the 36-count that the Kirkland Beef Hot Dogs come in — and I already have more than 70 hot dogs in my fridge; I did not need an additional 22.

Kirkland Franks are made of beef, water, dextrose, salt, spices, sodium lactate, garlic, sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, paprika and extractive, and sodium nitrite. Kirkland Beef Dinner Franks check all of the boxes. They're juicy, provide a lovely snap as you take a bite, and are oozing with flavor. If there's anything to complain about, it's that they're on the saltier side of beef franks, but thanks to their sheer size, it's hard to imagine eating more than two at most in a sitting.

There are so many different flavors, styles, and variations of hot dogs that anyone willing to put in the work is sure to find one that fits their preference. For this tasting, I picked up hot dogs from Walmart, Costco, and Metro Market. I took photos of the hot dogs straight out of the packaging before grilling one of each and sampling them in a random order. Taste, texture, consistency, and appearance were all factors in my rankings.

I experienced this taste test through two lenses: adult preferences and childhood memories. For the most part, I gravitated toward the beef and pork franks because they came with a richer flavor profile and a more meaty bite. However, the mechanically-separated poultry dogs came with a dollop of nostalgia that had my mind playing a little tug-of-war. 

Which made for the better hot dog? Ultimately, it's all about what you're looking for. I like to think of a true hot dog as something closer to Oscar Mayer's Classic Wiener than the Kirkland Beef Dinner Franks — but while the former is more of a traditional hot dog, the latter simply has more flavor, something that is key as an adult but was less important in my youth. Adult hot dog or kid hot dog, whatever you choose, there really is no wrong answer as long as it's what you enjoy.

Something of note: Not a single hot dog package was resealable. Consider this my plea to all hot dog manufacturers: For the love of the dog, please give us a zip-lock feature — it would make life so much easier.
