THE PRESENTATION SECRETS OF STEVE JOBS

Steve Jobs transformed business presentations into an art form. Ask business professionals anywhere in the world to describe the “Steve Jobs style” and most will have an answer. It’s irresistible, entertaining, and engaging.

Today Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Marc Benioff, Former Ford CEO Alan Mulally, Alibaba founder Jack Ma, and many other leaders around the world emulate the presentation style Steve Jobs made famous, and the one Carmine Gallo popularized in his Wall Street Journal bestseller, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs—one of the most popular public-speaking books in the world and recently classified as “a business classic.”

Now you can learn the exact techniques that made Jobs the most captivating storyteller on the business stage. In The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs Carmine Gallo maps out a ready-to-use framework to help you plan, deliver and refine the best presentation of your life. Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs

presentation secrets of steve jobs pdf

As the sad news of the death of co-founder and former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, hits the headlines, we pay tribute by sharing his ‘Presentation Secrets’ courtesy of Carmine Gallo.

1. Create memorable moments

Every Steve Jobs presentation has one moment that leaves everyone in awe. These ‘moments’ are scripted ahead of time to complement Steve Jobs’s slides, the Apple website, press releases and advertisements. At Macworld 2008, Jobs pulled the new MacBook Air out of a manila inter-office envelope to show everyone just how thin it was. Bloggers went nuts and it was the most common photograph of the event.

steve_jobs_memorable_moment

At last month’s ‘Rock & Roll’ event, the ‘water cooler’ moment wasn’t a product at all. Instead, it was Steve Jobs himself walking on stage after a long, health-related absence. He told the audience he now had the liver of a mid-twenties person who had died in a car crash and was generous enough to donate their organs. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for such generosity,” he said.

2. Stick to the rule of three

A Steve Jobs presentation is typically divided into three parts. The Rule of Three is one of most powerful concepts in dramatic writing –how many times have you seen a ‘two-act’ play? The human mind can only retain three or four ‘chunks’ of information, and Jobs is well aware of this principle. He even has a lot of fun with it.

steve_jobs-3-468

During Macworld 2007, he teased the audience with ‘three’ revolutionary products: an MP3 player, a phone and an Internet communications device. Of course, he really only had one device — the iPhone.

3. Dress up the numbers

When Jobs introduced the iPod in 2001, he said it came with a 5GB hard-drive. Only the most technical audience would understand the implications of that number. Jobs broke it down by saying, “That’s enough storage for 1,000 songs.” He made the number even more compelling by announcing that all those songs could fit in your pocket. Apple presenters never leave big numbers hanging without putting those numbers in perspective.

dress_up_numbers-468

For example, during the ‘Rock & Roll’ music event, marketing head Phil Schiller announced that Apple had sold 220 million iPods to date. “That’s 73% of the market,” he said. Schiller took it one step further, and got a laugh, when he said Microsoft was ‘pulling up the rear’ with 1% market share.

4. Think visually

Apple presentations are strikingly simple and visual. For example, there is very little text on a Steve Jobs slide. While the average PowerPoint slide has forty words, there were far fewer than forty words in the first dozen slides of last week’s event. When Jobs talked about the popularity of iTunes around the world, his slide showed twenty-three flags of different countries instead of country names.

think_visually-468

When he said the iPhone app store was celebrating its first anniversary, a slide appeared with a birthday cake holding one candle. When he talked about lower iPod prices, the new price was accompanied by photos of the iPods. Psychologists call this picture superiority: ideas are more easily recalled when presented with text and images instead of text alone.

5. Create Twitter-friendly headlines

Apple makes it simple for the media to talk about its products — the company writes the headlines for them. Now, reporters will tell you that they like to come up with their own headlines, but why then did hundreds of them use “World’s thinnest notebook” to describe the MacBook Air? Because it’s the best way to describe it. It’s the world’s thinnest notebook. Period.

twitter_headlines-468

Steve Jobs always describes a new product with a concise phrase that fits well within a 140-character Twitter post. What’s an iPod? “One thousand songs in your pocket.” What’s Genius Mix for iTunes? “It’s like having a DJ mix the songs in your library.”

6. Share the stage

Jobs rarely gives an entire presentation by himself. Instead he surrounds himself with a supporting cast. He had a large supporting cast at the September 9 music event, including Apple VPs Jeff Robbin and Phil Schiller.

share_stage-468

In October 2008 Jobs introduced lead designer Jonathan Ive, who gave the audience a tutorial about Apple’s newest line of aluminium MacBooks. Although few companies are more closely associated with their founder than Apple, a Jobs presentation is rarely a one-man play. He features supporting characters who play a key role in the narrative.

7. Practise, practise and practise more

According to some observers, Steve Jobs labours over every slide, each one “written like a piece of poetry.” Jobs has been known to spend hours upon hours over many days rehearsing every section of his keynotes. Nothing is left to chance. Jobs makes a presentation look effortless because he has spent hours preparing it.

8. Sell dreams, not products

Steve Jobs is passionately committed to changing the world and his passion shows in every presentation. In May 2005, Steve Jobs told Stanford graduates, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life… and the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Anyone can learn the specific techniques Jobs uses to create visually creative slides and to craft an interesting story, but that message will fail to inspire an audience if there’s no enthusiasm behind it. Jobs has a nearly messianic  zeal to change the world. In your own way, so should you.

9. Introduce the antagonist

In every classic story, the hero fights the villain. The same holds true for a Steve Jobs presentation. In 1984, the villain was IBM, “Big Blue.” Before Jobs introduced the famous 1984 Ridley Scott ad to the Apple sales team, he painted a picture of Big Blue “bent on world domination” with Apple as the only one to stand in its way. Conquering a shared enemy is a powerful motivator, attracting fans and followers.

10. One more thing… Have Fun!

Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs

“It’s not about the software; it’s about the story”

How to create a presentation like steve jobs.

As a communication and presentation skills coach, I often get asked, “How do I make my slides look like a Steve Jobs presentation?” The first thing I tell them is that they do not have to use Apple presentation software (Keynote), although it’s a beautifully refined program. I’ve seen gorgeous PowerPoint designs as well, especially with PowerPoint 2007. So it’s not about the software; it’s about the story. Steve Jobs treats presentations like theatrical events complete with heroes and villains, a supporting cast, stage props and visually stunning backdrops—slides. I know designers who have actually worked with Steve Jobs at Apple, so I wrote an entire book on how to create and deliver a presentation the Steve Jobs way. While there are about eighteen techniques that Jobs uses, one stands out. I call it “unleashing your inner Zen.” Here are some tips on creating a presentation the Steve Jobs way.

Picture Superiority

A Steve Jobs presentation is strikingly simple, visual and devoid of bullet points. That’s right—no bullet points. Ever. Of course, this raises the question, would a PowerPoint presentation without bullet points still be a PowerPoint presentation? The answer is yes, and a much more interesting one. New research into cognitive functioning—how the brain works—shows that bullet points are the least effective way to deliver important information. In fact, memory processing is aided by pictures. Scientists call it picture superiority: ideas are more easily recalled when presented as text and images instead of text alone.

Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication

When Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air in January, 2008, the most memorable slide showed the notebook computer being pulled from a manila inter-office envelope to show just how thin it really was. No words could equal the power and simplicity of that image. The average PowerPoint has forty words. It’s hard to find forty words in ten slides of a Steve Jobs presentation. “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” said Jobs quoting from one of his heroes, Leonardo da Vinci. Jobs keeps his slides simple by eliminating unnecessary words, charts and other eye clutter. The influential German painter, Hans Hoffman once said, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” By removing clutter—extraneous features and information—from his products and presentations, Jobs achieves the ultimate goal: ease of use and clarity.

To gain a fuller appreciation of Jobs’ simple slide creations, watch the first few minutes of his  keynote presentation at the Macworld Expo, January, 2008 . The first several slides have one or two words per slide. When Jobs reviews the new products that Apple introduced in the previous year, the slide simply reads: 2007. Jobs thanks his customers for their support and the slide reads: Thank you.

Confidence, Time and Practice

Creating simple, visual slides requires three things: confidence, time and practice. First, confidence. Slides should not take center stage. The audience’s attention should be directed at you, the speaker. The slides compliment the speaker. That means you had better know your material and have the confidence to deliver your message with conviction. The second thing it requires is time. It’s easy to create cluttered slides—just write everything you want to say on the slide. Thinking visually about displaying information takes more effort, but it’s worth the time to stand apart. And the third thing it requires is practice. Because you’re delivering information that is not on the slide, you can’t read from the slide. You have to commit the information to memory and use the slide as a prompt to deliver the idea. Steve Jobs rehearsed for many, many hours over many weeks to get everything just right.

Steve Jobs may be a hard act to follow, but once you start using some of his techniques in your own presentations, you’ll be hard to forget.

They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. This book shows you how to identify your point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points.

Then came the core and hallmark of his genius - his exacting insistence on perfection, his counterculture life approach, and his level of taste and style that pushed all boundaries.

There have been many books - on a large and small scale - about Steve Jobs, one of the most famous CEOs in history. But this book is different from all the others. Becoming Steve Jobs takes on and breaks down the existing myth and stereotypes about Steve Jobs. The conventional, one-dimensional view of Jobs is that he was half genius, half jerk from youth, an irascible and selfish leader who slighted friends and family alike.

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better, and look cooler, than $20 no-names... and believing it makes it true .

Great ideas!

We all know Steve Jobs was a master at presentation, and in this book by Carmine Gallo we get a unique insight into the thinking behind these great presentations. For all of us who rehearse an important speech or presentation a couple of times...Carmine Gallo's book is a real eye-opener to the world of Steve Jobs Perfection. I've retooled my thinking and so will you when it comes to the kind of and amount of preparation - whether in business, civic, political or personal lives.

Useful, but repetitive

What did you like best about The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs? What did you like least?

The simplicity and clarity in which the keys to presenting well were conveyed. The author also used numerous, memorable examples to emphasise key points. However, a number of examples and concepts were often repeated frequently that I kept questioning whether I'd rewound the book by accident.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I'd have brought in more examples of how Jobs' practices have been adopted effectively by other presenters. Gallo did this occasionally, but the frequent referral to the 2007 iPhone launch became the lingering memory. Even trying to recall the example of Obama's campaign or what Tim Cook does as a result aren't memorable because it's hard to think back to examples used beyond the iPhone launch.

What does Carmine Gallo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His enthusiasm for the subject and the concepts is obvious in the way he narrates the book. Even recalling his recollection of Jobs on stage for the iPhone launch elicits the voice of Jobs' speech.

Was The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs worth the listening time?

Yes. The materials could have been delivered in perhaps 30% less time, but would I have still considered this book worth purchasing? I don't know....

Any additional comments?

Any subsequent edition should rely less on repeating a key example, and more an how that example has been adopted by others, or elsewhere.

There Isn't Much Original Here

This is the same stuff that I have been teaching in my presentation training classes for years. Steve Jobs didn't invent this technique, he learned it. How? He took the time to study. Still, the book has a ton of great material---I really liked it until I hit the Joel Olsteen stuff. I personally don't care for or feel trust in the Olsteen machine. So yes, if you are new to presenting, this will your first exposure to much of this material. If you're a seasoned speaker, stick with your own style.

INSIGHTFUL AND INSPIRING

Would you listen to The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs again? Why?

Inquisitive questions showcase the iconic personality and incisive intellect of Steve Jobs in this serene and thoughtful dialog. His intensive understanding of history and his personal contribution to creating it is something that should be taught and encouraged in our schools instead of the rhetoric of getting by... I plan to listen to this many more times as a kind of "mind meld" to remember me that I am always making a memory and it behooves everyone if each of us makes every moment a good one... Listening to a visionary with an eye to creativity and construction sure beats the evening news showing despair and tragedy around the planet -- I for one would much rather have a surge of inspiration each day than an influx of fear. So once again heartily - I plan to listen to this again and again!

What did you like best about this story?

What I liked best is that his fundamental principles and drivers were articulately explored, not reported, during the interview.

Have you listened to any of Carmine Gallo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

While I have listened or read many interviews with historical figures, I have not specifically listened to Carmine Gallo's other performances.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

His recollection of the key moments of his growth as paired with the growth of his inventions was memorable. I worked on the first Lisa (pre-dating the first Mac) and the first NeXT machine, so learning about his history as it paralleled my own history was exciting.

Thank the creator for not inserting an agenda and letting the subject speak for himself. It is so refreshing to have the pauses and silences left alone.... they show such respect and allow us (as reader/viewers) to reflect and enjoy the fact that the answers aren't staged for our entertainment, but are thoughtfully crafted for our illumination.
