There can be nothing more pleasing to the senses than the sunrise. Nature is at its best at this heavenly hour. The golden rays of the sun give a bright coloring to the clouds and meadows, mountains and valleys. It marks the journey of the sun in the sky. At first, there appears a small ball of light in the sky. It then goes on increasing in size and shine. The golden dies seems to be rising and rising. Birds sing to its shine. Men and women who go out for morning walk enjoy its reddening beauty. It is the time when the day casts away the cloak of night. The lovers of morning walk stop on their way to look at the sunrise. The first rays of the sun are cool and bracing to the eyes. At a hill station, the beauty of sunrise is beyond description.  The hill-tops and the valley below seem to be bathed in yellow light. All of sudden, the golden ball shining in the sky grows big in size. Milk vendors and newspaper boys are heard calling their trade at every turn of the street. A little later, small boys and girls in shining uniforms are seen going to the school. As the sun gets higher in the sky, the day’s activity begins. Plants and trees feast on the rays of the sun. Late risers miss the beauty of sunrise. It is a rare joy to be awake at sunrise.

A scene at sun-rise is really very delightful. The darkness of night begins to clear. The stars in the sky begin to grow dim. The eastern horizon of the earth glows with orange coloured light. The sun looks like a ring of fire. The birds wake up in their nests and begin to chirp. Some even set out to collect food for the day. The atmosphere is pollution free. The sky is smokeless since the factories have not yet started their day’s work. The farmers make for their fields. The early risers go out for their daily morning walk. The milk boys are seen going towards cities with their pails full of milk. The school-rickshaws start playing on roads. Some stray dogs are seen wandering in search of food. The scene becomes hectic as the sun begins to rise high in the sky.

Nature and Air Pollution

Use of natural resources increases as the population grows. Coal and petroleum are in greater demand due to the growing manufacturing sector, however they pollute the air. The air we breathe has been tainted by smoke released from industries and automobiles. We must plant more trees if we want to lessen the impact of harmful air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc. Mother Nature is constantly being abused by mankind, who don't even consider the repercussions.

The beauty of the changing seasons has captivated people's attention for millennia and will do so till the end of time. Unquestionably the queen of the seasons, spring is the most beautiful of them all. The planet is awash in vibrant colours, luxuriant plants, and aromas during this time. Autumn's colours are golden, brown, and mature. A life that started in the spring matures in the fall. A season that aids in ripening is summer. The most delicious fruits and vegetables are only some of its many charms and beauties. Winters in nature are beautiful because of the crisp sky and the snow-capped mountains.

Enjoy Nature

We can all appreciate nature's beauty as we perceive it. You could either go for an early-morning stroll or an evening jog, both of which would put you in close proximity to nature and allow you to take in its beauty. Visit beaches, hill towns, and far-off locales with your friends and family to take in the breathtaking dawn or sunset.

How to Preserve Nature

Conserving our natural resources is really needed so that future generations can appreciate and enjoy them as well. To stop this ongoing process of destruction, we must raise people's awareness. To ensure a nation's progress while not endangering the environment, human activities must be carried out in a sustainable manner. It is crucial to realise that we shouldn't abuse some of god-greatest nature's blessings. Here are a few ways that you can conserve nature,

3 R’s | Reduce your consumption, reuse what you can, and recycle instead of throwing away.

Volunteer | Volunteer for cleanups in your community.

Educate | Help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.

Conserve water | The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.

Save Electricity | Switch off lights and fans when you leave the room.

Plant Trees | Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

My Trip to a Hill Station

I went to a beautiful hill station in the middle of the summer holidays with my family. The scenic views along the route kept me amused despite the lengthy trip. As we climbed higher, I could see dense trees and foggy mountains. I was also mesmerised by the curving roads, which made me feel as though I had stepped into another realm. I fell in love with nature as soon as we arrived since it had been kept in its natural state, complete with fresh, fragrant flowers of all types, a mild atmosphere, and lush vegetation. As I wandered amidst this beautiful landscape, I realised that all of my troubles had vanished. I felt so refreshed, calm and happy.

Everything we do is dependent on the natural world. We entirely rely on water, air, and fire for our life. The natural resources and the beauty of nature provides a sense of comfort to us.

If there's one thing in today's ever-changing world that will always be concrete: it's that the sun will rise and set every single day. With each sunrise, a new day begins and each sunset holds the promise of a new tomorrow. Sunrises are wonderful parts of nature, but sunsets specifically hold a special place in my heart.

I never truly appreciated a sunset until I got to college. I noticed students always posting pictures of sunsets over the water, so I decided to take a night and dedicate it to watching the sunset on the beach alone. Now they've become an escape; they're a reminder that any single day isn't defining my whole life. Sunsets have a way of bringing me peace. To just sit and watch the sun sink down and watch the sky turn colors is more like an art to me. A natural form of art perfected by mother nature herself.

I think one of the best parts about a sunset is that they're never quite the same. I've lived in Wilmington, North Carolina, for a little over three years now and have never seen a sunset that reminds me of another. Whether it's the clouds or the colors, each sunset has its own uniqueness. To think, the sun has been setting for billions and billions of years without duplicating one.

The beauty of a sunset is partially what the viewer makes of it. Sure, they hold natural beauty but they also hold different meanings. I make sunsets my unwinding time, my me time. Whether it's after a long day of class or a pre-homework and studying escape, sunsets have a special way of making time seem to stand still. The beauty of a sunset is, that for any individual, it holds it's own purpose. For me, it's an escape route from the craziness of everyday life to a few moments or tranquility.

There's beauty to be found in every sunset, even the not so colorful ones. Each one has the potential to be something special for someone, you just have to be willing to dedicate some time to truly take them in.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Seattle is relatively quiet this time of day: Most people are still sleeping. The cool night breeze is getting its final breath of life just before the burning heat of day takes over at around seven o’clock.

Although most of the people are still asleep, you are awake. And you’re taking an early morning stroll along the walkway on the harbor. You take in a fresh breath of the cool summer breeze, and a faint salty taste tickles your tongue. As you walk, the delicate sound of waves lapping at the rocks below fill your ears. The fresh and crisp smell of seawater on wet wood lingers in the air. You sniff it in and smile with delight, as the dreadful memories of the previous night drift away in a warped path as if they were on a crooked boat.

You continue your pleasant saunter and take in the harmonic atmosphere of the beach and the harbor. All is well—Until a man and woman walk past. The man is wearing a black skin-tight shirt and dark pants. His clothing compliments his strong, muscular physique well. He strokes his pointy beard, and then rubs his gleaming, smooth head as he walks by. He inspects you quickly and you see a peculiar glint in his eyes, but cannot make out the emotion associated with it.

The woman is also dressed in dark clothes: dark red shirt and black jeans. A smirk is imprinted on her sharp face. Her wiry red hair flows, unnaturally down to her shoulders. She too gives you an uneasy look.

Out of the corner of your eye, you see a crooked boat in the ocean stop and then come back to the docks.

They had turned around. Their eyes now glare at you, and you can see the burning anger and resentment form in their pupils. In their clenched fists, were long, gleaming, broad knives. The gangsters had come for their revenge.

You stand, petrified, as they make their way towards you. Your feet are glued to the floor. Your eyes are wide open in fear. Thump, Thump, Thump.  Your heartbeat gets louder and quicker, like a drum, drumming in your ears—a drum roll for the grand finale: Death.

Every step, the man and woman takes, is a step closer to your death. Fear envelops your senses. The salty air stings as you breathe deeply and heavily. The smell of slaughtered fish punches you in the nose. And the waves slap the rocks below you. Somehow, you manage to muster an amount of courage. You scream.

The scream is ear piercing and you clap you hands to your head. Even your ears cannot bear the power of your own vocal chords. The scream takes the gangsters by surprise. You have just enough time to start running.

You dash along the walkway, urging your body forward. Your pursuers are right on your tail. Everything on either side of you is a blur as you sprint forward. In front of you is a series of cargo boxes, scattered along the walkway. You keep moving forward. Your life depends on your legs. You approach a large fruit box, and leap over it. The jump is successful and you bolt forward. Swerving to the right, you narrowly miss a fisherman, and quickly spin to the left, scraping the edge of another box. But the gangsters are still on you. You manage a quick glance behind; they’ve gotten closer somehow. You see the fire in their eyes and the aggressive snarls in their mouths and you don’t want to become a victim of this. You keep running.

You shove past a group of startled fishermen. They’re unable to react as your pursuers shove them over again. You keep running, forcing your exhausted body to do it. You leap over another cargo box, ignoring the shocked and angry fishermen. You make a quick sharp turn, onto a different walkway. There are more boxes and fishermen. You zig-zag, left and right, and leap, quick and far, as you dodge the obstacles. You can’t lose the gangsters. You pant heavily as you zoom along the walkway. Your heartbeat races with your footsteps. You breathe a quick sigh of relief; finally the walkway starts to clear up: No more obstacles.

An empty boat floats at the end of the walkway. You make a dash towards it. This is your last chance. The walkway ends here. You surge forward, running at your top speed. If you don’t make it to the boat, you’re dead.

The boat gets nearer and nearer. Your pursuers get nearer and nearer. You dare to take a quick glance back. The gangsters are only a few feet away from you now—almost an arms length away. Their knives threaten to kill you, if you slowed down.  But you know you will surely make it. The jump was right there. Just a few more steps and… Thud!!

Suddenly, you stop. Your eyes grow wide. You manage to look down and see the tip of a knife, protruding from your stomach. The blood spreads quickly, soaking your shirt. You stumble and turn around, to see the man and woman stand there. Smiling.

“Don’t ever mess with us.” The man commands. He shakes his head slowly and wags his finger at you as your vision blurs. You open my mouth to say something but the words don’t come out. Just blood. Your legs start to wobble and you stagger towards the edge of the walkway.

You fall into the water, right after you get your last breath of air. It’s seven in the morning, and the sun has just risen.

Quality of writing.

The Quality of Written Communication (QWC) is fine. There are a few moments where colons and commas should be used yet a full stop has - "[...] the man and woman standing there. Smiling. (sic)". And there are also moment were comma splice has lowered the QWC mark. A simple re-read and grammar check will iron out these issues.

Level of analysis

The Level of Description is very good. There is an equal concentration on describing smells and sounds as well as sights and this really helps the reader imagine they are in the story. I also like the more delicate nuancing with the foreshadowing of the murder at the beginning, likening the rising sun to a "silent murderer" creates a cognitive connection and sets up the tone for the piece. This consistency is excellent and shows a candidate who know how to create suspense right from the off and continue it through the piece. This is also shown in the contrast of the description, as the protagonist wakes up he describes almost an idyllic setting, but after the fear of realisation that you have murdered a gang boss the same objects are described with more violent metaphors and similes and this shows the transition of mood and tone very well. There is an abundance of short sentences towards the end of the piece which makes the reader read much faster, picking up the pace much like the character in the piece. I would argue that these short sentences might be more effective though, if in some, the "you" was taken out - almost all the sentences began with "you" and it became almost rhythmical and predictable, which naturally goes against what the candidate is trying to achieve.

Response to question

This is a Writing to Describe task in the form of a creative writing piece. The candidate makes an excellent effort in focusing on how to effectively describe an incident. They have used Second Person Address meaning that they are narrating the reader's movements - an excellent technique that gets the reader really involved really fast. There is also evidence to suggest that this candidate is well aware of the other literary techniques required to effectively describe something. The one piece of dialogue is effective inasmuch as it's blunt and suits something a killer might say, but "Don't ever mess with us" seems an odd thing to say to someone who has just been killed; someone who clearly can't take heed of the advice, per sé.

Suddenly, the beauty of nature turns to ashes in his mouth and he is filled with a sense of dread. He realizes that he can’t stay in this idyllic state forever and that adulthood, with all its responsibilities and sorrows, awaits him. Doris Lessing expertly captures the fragility of youth and the inevitability of growing up in this touching short story.

The boy fought against his own laziness, training himself to wake up at 4:30 every morning. He would jokingly tell himself that he could stay in bed all day if he wanted to, knowing full well that the comfort of his sheets could not conquer his self-determination.

I've Had Eczema Almost My Entire Life — Here's What It's Really Like to Live With

Like roughly 10 percent of the US population, I have eczema . It first appeared when I was around three months old. Now that I'm an adult, It's manageable mainly, though it does flare up occasionally, causing my skin to break out in that tell-tale itchy red rash and subsequent dryness.

Usually, it appears in the crooks of my elbows and sometimes in patches on my legs, ankles, hands, and the center of my neck. Changes in the weather (especially when it's hot), allergies and hay fever, and stress are all triggers for me, but I'm mostly able to manage these flares . When I was younger, however, it was a very different story.

In my first few years, my eczema was prevalent. It was constantly sore on my hands, legs, and ankles. Thinking back, I really feel for my mom; getting a baby to sleep can be difficult at the best of times, but getting a baby with eczema to sleep takes it to new heights. I don't remember, but she used to cover me in over-the-counter moisturizers, desperately trying to keep the itchy, dry skin at bay. Every night, she'd put me in mittens to prevent me from scratching and a sleep suit with feet to protect the angriest areas of skin. Though there were times it was "less bad," she says there was never a point when I was eczema-free as a toddler.

Throughout my childhood, I can vividly remember disliking spending time outdoors because things like heat, wearing sun cream, or sitting in grass (particularly) always made my skin more itchy. I knew I was "supposed" to enjoy being outside — and don't get me wrong, I still played with friends — but I much preferred being indoors or, at recess, being in a shady area on the playground. This made me far less likely to spend the afternoon scratching my skin.

If you have eczema, too, you know that it's a vicious cycle: itching is so difficult to resist, but the more you itch, the worse it gets. It can feel relentless. I grew to loathe the process of moisturizing the skin on my body as it often initially made the itchy feeling worse before the lotion soaked in. As a teen, I avoided applying it unless I had to — precisely the opposite of what eczema-prone skin needs, but I had little skin-care knowledge back then, and my focus was on being itch-free wherever possible.

For most of my teenage years, from 11 to 16, the eczema was persistent on my arms but looked most severe on my legs. It would be itchy as it healed and though I tried to resist, scratching would cause it to bleed and scab. To my knowledge, I don't think it ever got infected, but as a teen, I was very self-conscious of how it looked. I would rarely wear anything that meant my legs were on display, and if I did, I would wear tights, even at the height of summer. Though I have a small amount of scarring from that time, I've had little-to-no eczema on my legs in my twenties — although, in what turned out to be some pretty helpful irony, it flared up on my arms, hands, and legs recently.

At 29, I have a good handle on my eczema symptoms; working this out is a fairly personal process. It's taken some trial and error to find what works best on my skin. Steroid creams are a hot topic, but I personally have no issues when I use them occasionally to help manage any breakout "rashy" areas. I also try to avoid very hot showers where possible during a flare-up .

When my skin is dry and itchy, I use La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast Baume B5 ($20). Recently, my hands were so sore that they looked almost sunburnt, but applying a thick layer of this really took this down. I wish CeraVe had been around when I was younger; the Moisturizing Lotion ($15) is great for general use, while I use the thicker Moisturizing Cream ($19) on areas that are prone to getting very dry. Both are plain, gentle, and formulated with ceramides to support healthy skin barrier function. (Though I've not used it, I know the brand has an eczema-specific range in the US, too.) It's easy to see why so many dermatologists recommend both brands.

Between getting older and a societal shift in attitudes around how we look, I'm fortunate that I feel far less bothered by my eczema being visible; I don't think I even own a pair of nude tights anymore. As for moisturizing, I'm better at that, too. Now that I'm a beauty editor, I've heard from enough dermatologists over the years how important it is to look after the skin barrier, especially when you have eczema. The phrase "self care" is used a lot, but rather than being a chore, I now see it as a way of looking after myself and my skin.

Curious Tourists and Modern-Day Druids: Marking the Solstice at Stonehenge

To celebrate the celestial event, the ropes come down at the ancient monument, and visitors spend the night to greet the sunrise.

In the predawn darkness, a procession of druid priests in white robes carry banners by the monoliths of Stonehenge, the ancient British archaeological site. There is an aroma of burning sage; a bagpipe calls in the distance. As dawn approaches, fever-pitched drumming mounts. If you hadn’t already felt the power in the stones at this summer solstice celebration, there is no denying the physical vibration as the sun rises in alignment with the stone circle.

Most of the time, visiting Stonehenge — which is owned by the British crown and managed by English Heritage , a nonprofit that oversees more than 400 of the country’s historic sites — requires purchasing tickets and keeping far away from the stones, which are normally cordoned off by ropes. But since 2000, four times a year, on the solstices and equinoxes, the ropes come down and visitors are invited to wander the stone circle, staying overnight and past sunrise if they wish.

On Thursday, to mark this year’s summer solstice, the monument opened at 7 p.m., as visitors began arriving on shuttle buses from nearby Salisbury, a trip that took most of an hour in traffic. The rules were strict: Blankets for picnics and warmth are allowed, but no camping equipment or chairs. Snacks are OK. Alcohol is prohibited.

The crowd ebbed and flowed, with an evening wave of tourists who came to picnic, then left before nightfall. People staying overnight faced evening temperatures of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit without shelter. Those who stayed drummed, chanted and communed with the stones, which were lit by a nearly full moon and purple floodlights. Flower crowns topped many heads. The intensity built through the night and picked up with faster drumming and chanting when the sky lightened just before 4 a.m.

There were also food trucks offering wood-fired pizzas, loaded fries, curries and doughnuts, and a merch tent for souvenirs.
