This document summarizes the approach of IIM Jammu to prepare the admission list for its Ph.D. for Working Professionals Program for the AY 2024 intake. IIM Jammu reserves the right to modify any part of this document, including the various criteria and cut-offs mentioned at any time till the actual admission process for the batch is completed.

1. Admission Process

The admission process of IIM Jammu consists of:

  • Conducting the written test (for candidates not having valid CAT/ GRE/GMAT/ JRF score card)
  • Shortlisting of candidates for Personal Interview (PI) process

Preparing the Merit List based on the Admission Criteria and PI Process

2. Eligibility Criteria

2.1. qualifications.

Candidates must possess one of the following qualifications to apply for IIM Jammu's doctoral program:

  • A Master's Degree (Bachelor's degree obtained in 10+2+3 pattern, followed by a master's degree) or a 5-year Integrated Master's Degree (obtained after completing higher secondary schooling in 10+2 pattern) in any discipline, with at least 60*# percent marks in the Bachelor's as well as in the Master's degree.
  • A professional qualification like CA, ICWA, CS, with at least 50*# percent marks
  • Five-year/four-year Integrated Master's degree program in any discipline, with at least 60 percent marks, obtained after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.

In addition, the applicant must have obtained a minimum of 50 percent marks in both secondary and higher secondary examination of a Board or equivalent.

* The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate would be calculated based on the practice followed by the respective University/ Institution. In the case of Grades/CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the respective University/ Institution. If a University/ Institution confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent percentage, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate's CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result by 100.

* Five percent marks relaxation is given to the applicants from EWS, SC, ST, NC-OBC, and PwD categories.

           $  6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale or equivalent 65% marks.

2.2. Age Limit and Work Experience:

There is no upper age limit for the candidate. The candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of work experience at the supervisory or above level in Government, autonomous bodies, research centres, PSUs, educational institutes, or private organizations.

2.3. Ph.D. for Working Professionals Intake

IIM Jammu would take scholars under this Ph.D. for Working Professionals program in accordance with Government of India's Reservation Policy.

Reservation Policy:

IIM Jammu will strictly follow the Government of India's Reservation Policy:

SC

ST

PwD

To be considered for reservations, the applicable Central Government list as on the last date of submission of applications shall be binding. No subsequent changes will be effective for Doctoral Programme for Working Professionals 2024. The candidates claiming admissions in the reserved categories need to further note the eligibility requirements carefully before applying. It should be noted that while it is the endeavour of IIM Jammu that candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD/NC-OBC/EWS categories join the program, they have to meet the minimum eligibility criteria and a certain minimum level of performance that IIM Jammu may specify in order to be considered for admission into the program.

3. Selection Process

Candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria as stated above are required to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) held by the IIMs. Alternatively, those who have qualified GATE, GRE, GMAT examinations can also apply in the relevant area of specialization. Scores of any of these examinations, including CAT taken during the last three years (certificate/award letter should have been obtained within last three years from the last date of application form submission for Ph.D. 2024) will be considered valid. For those candidates who do not possess any of the above test scores (CAT/GMAT/GRE/GATE), they need to appear in the entrance test (IIMJ-RAT) being conducted by IIM Jammu. Admission to the program is open to overseas candidates, including NRIs and foreign nationals.

The candidates short-listed based on their academic record and performance in the competitive examinations mentioned above will be called to IIM Jammu for a personal interview for final selection in May 2024.

Candidates who received the admission offer from IIM Jammu and accepted the offer within the stipulated date need to send a commitment fee (Offer Acceptance Fee) of Rs. 36,000/- (the date of submission will be mentioned in the admission offer letter) along with the Offer Acceptance Form, which will be later adjusted against caution money deposit (Rs. 30,000/- refundable after adjusting dues, if any, at the time of leaving the Institute) and Alumni fee of Rs. 6,000/-. If a candidate subsequently wishes to withdraw the offer within the withdrawal date specified in the Offer Letter, the commitment fees of Rs. 30000/- will be refunded after deducting Rs. 1000/- as processing charges. No refund in case of withdrawal from the Programme after registration.

3.1 CAT/GATE/GMAT/GRE/JRFScore

Vision of the Programme

image

The objective of the Doctoral Programme in Management is to equip students with necessary skills to identify and carry out research on complex issues in a specialized field of management. The programme is strongly committed to preparing thought leaders, both for the academic and corporate world. Graduates of the Doctoral Programme in Management are placed in world class organizations in teaching, research and consulting positions. A total of 471 doctoral students have graduated from IIMA so far.

The Doctoral Programme in Management seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contributions that advance the frontiers of knowledge. It provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research. The student opts for one of eleven functional/sectoral areas and acquires super specialized theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical aspects of the area.

The small class size allows close interaction with faculty members, who provide the intellectual stimulus and help develop the student's research interests and professional goals. Students generally spend a little over four years to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.

Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced Doctoral courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization.  The Ph.D. dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Management receive a comprehensive fellowship that covers all costs and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

Nirved Kumar Year of Joining: 2020, Area: RJMCEI

My experience with IIM A, till now, can be summarized in three words - rigour, learning, and development. The coursework is vast and intense. I would admit that the first year of coursework has helped me take a quantum leap into the world of academics. The faculty members are extremely supportive and patient. Additionally, there is ample scope, here, to pursue one’s extra-curricular interests. The “U” Advantage

The “U” Advantage

IIM Udaipur’s PhD Program transforms Indian students into global scholars through three unique offerings:

Being uniquely known for its research focus, IIMU takes pride in having one of the most diverse and research-productive faculty members in the country. IIMU is ranked 4th in the country for high-quality research (UTD Ranking—which is the most relevant ranking to evaluate a PhD Program). By working closely with research-active faculty members, PhD students receive high-quality guidance—thereby enabling them to become well-grounded scholars.

fourth Rank in India for Research

IIMU’s Research focus will give you an edge in the academic job-market

The academic job market varies significantly from the MBA job market. MBA job placements are often determined by institute rankings, whereas PhD graduates are primarily evaluated based on the quality of their research publications and R&Rs. Distinguishing yourself as a PhD graduate hinges on your ability to publish in prestigious academic journals. Some IIMs excel in MBA rankings but fall behind IIMU in research output for top-tier management journals (UTD-24 and FT-50). We encourage prospective PhD candidates to assess IIMU's Research Ranking (4th in India) and the faculty's track record in publishing high-quality research in top-tier journals to make an informed decision about their PhD institution.

Guidance from World-Class Faculty

You will be guided in your PhD journey by outstanding faculty members who hold doctoral degrees from top research institutes in India and abroad. Faculty members at IIM Udaipur publish in leading management research journals (UTD-24 and FT-50 Journals which are the hallmarks of global scholarship in management), including Information Systems Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Operations Management, Management Science, Organization Science, and Production and Operations Management. You will receive research guidance from some of the best minds in the country, who will help you to develop the capabilities necessary for publishing in such top-tier international journals. You will also be able to draw on the expertise of reputed faculty members from across the world, who engage in research collaborations with faculty members at IIM Udaipur.

Monthly Brown Bag Seminars

Every month, PhD students and faculty are encouraged to present their ongoing research work to the entire research community of their respective areas (which includes faculty, PhD students, research assistants and teaching assistants) to receive constructive feedback. These seminars are a hallmark of an active research ecosystem that encourages faculty-student dialogue and peer-to-peer learning and continuous self-improvement of one’s research portfolio.

  • Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management More details
  • Our program is designed on the lines of similar programs at top schools across the world. The course curriculum for PhD students is exclusively designed at an advanced doctoral level and is completely separate from the MBA curriculum—giving each student individual and focused attention from faculty. During this time, students gain experience and mastery in a range of cutting-edge research skills, approaches, subject area, and methods.
  • The PhD Program generally has a duration of 5 years. In the first 2 years, students complete rigorous coursework covering foundational subjects, methods and advanced courses in their area of specialization. After coursework, the students complete a comprehensive exam focused on area-specific courses/topics delivered in both year one and year two. After completing a comprehensive examination, students work on their doctoral dissertations, undertaking original research designed to make significant scholarly contribution in their field.
  • Across courses, the students are given an opportunity to (i) read, comprehend and critique several cutting edge research publications from top-tier journals in their respective areas; (ii) develop an understanding of classic and emergent theories in their field; (iii) develop hands-on learning on standard and cutting-edge research methods and tools of data collection and data analysis (e.g., research softwares such as Stata, Qualtrics, SPSS, R, Python, etc.); and (iv) develop a socially responsible perspective towards research. Furthermore, the institute takes research integrity seriously and all students are mandated to undergo anti-plagiarism training in their first year.
  • Practical Research Projects In addition to classroom learning through coursework, students start engaging in practical research projects right from their first year in order to gain hands-on research experience. During their first year, all students need to work on a First Year Research Project (FYRP) under the guidance of a faculty where they consolidate and apply their learnings from first year coursework. Similarly, during their second year, students need to work on a Second Year Research Project (SYRP) under the guidance of a faculty where they consolidate and apply their learnings from overall coursework (the SYRP also serves as a practical component of the comprehensive exam in the third year).
  • Teaching Assistance (TA) From the 3rd year onwards, students are required to provide teaching assistantship support to area faculty members for their MBA courses. The current TA requirement is 12 credits (90 hours) spread across three years. TA experience helps the PhD candidates get practical exposure to teaching methods and prepare them to perform better in teaching roles which are pivotal for a well-rounded academic career.

IIM Udaipur's doctoral program is designed for students who aspire to become globally acclaimed scholars in their field. At IIMU, we believe that giving students ample opportunities to network with global peers through international exposure would play a key role in transforming Indian students into global scholars .

International Academic Conferences

IIMU encourages PhD students to attend international conferences/seminars to present their research papers. For this purpose, students will be eligible for a grant of INR 2,00,000 over a period of four years to attend international conferences/seminars (outside India) subject to the acceptance of their research papers. Students are also encouraged to seek visits in research-oriented schools abroad to conduct research while in the program. The student can use the international conference budget for such visit instead of presenting at conference. Students are typically guided in such a manner that they present at least one paper in an international conference before their dissertation. Attending leading international conferences from their field allows PhD students to gain a global perspective on cutting edge research theories and methods and also provides them networking opportunities with academic peers and experts.

Students are also eligible to receive an additional funding of INR 2,00,000 to attend another international conference if they co-author a paper with an IIMU faculty member which gets accepted at a FT50/ IIMU A* journal list during the tenure of their PhD program.

Semester Abroad (Merit-based)

IIMU provides funding for up to two students each year, based on merit, to spend four months at a prestigious foreign university. Students work alongside an esteemed faculty member as their guide, engaging in research projects, seminars, and research center activities. The program covers travel expenses, living costs, actual medical insurance, and contingencies for the duration. This unique opportunity sets IIMU apart from other IIMs.

Who is it for?

The Executive FPM attracts experienced business leaders and faculty without doctorate who have the passion, ability, and intellectual curiosity to pursue a terminal degree. The EFPM is for a select group of senior professionals who hold a bachelor’s degree and have extensive work experience but who do not want to leave their careers to pursue a full-time PhD or FPM. Individuals who are attracted to the executive DBA equivalent programme often seek to deepen their understanding of latest business theory and apply it to address modern challenges of today’s dynamic business environment. Others pursue it as a means of moving into a career in higher education or to increase their expertise for a career in business research and consulting.

Why Executive EFPM?

There are  very few options for business executive education beyond the master's degree level. This is especially true for professionals who want to seek advanced education while still fully employed. Senior managers who participate in executive education often want to further their education beyond the MBA or specialised business master’s degree.

The growing complexity of managing a business in a rapidly changing business environment requires skill-sets that exceed the MBA or executive MBA level.

The executive DBA equivalent programme is suited senior managers who want to advanced their career in industry or consulting. It is also aimed at professionals who want at some stage of their career to move into higher education.

There is extreme shortage of doctoral level faculty in business schools as identified by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which is the world premier accrediting body of business schools. Offering doctoral level programme for senior managers helps in addressing the faculty needs of business schools and to enhance their teaching capacity in such institutions.

The Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), an intensive one-year fulltime residential programme for experienced professionals, leading to an MBA, is created specifically for professionals with remarkable track records and 5 to 12 years of work experience in a wide range of industries. The EPGP provides students with the same solid foundation in key management concepts and disciplines as a two-year MBA, with similar rigor, range of electives, and grading criteria. In today’s volatile and competitive economic environment, companies face an increasing need for skilled mid-level and senior executives who have the vision and potential to attain top leadership positions. While deep functional and operational expertise is a prerequisite for such executives, their success is also contingent on their ability to perceive and analyze a situation from multiple perspectives and take timely and effective action.

IIMB designed the EPGP specifically to prepare such forward-thinking and creative managers – the business leaders of tomorrow who will create value for their organizations as well as for society.

What Is An Executive PhD Program For Working Professionals?

If you are a seasoned professional, and think that you have more experience what an executive MBA can give you, you may be thinking about getting an Executive PhD.

In this post, we explore how this specialised doctoral program blends rigorous academic research with real-world business applications, offering a dynamic pathway for business leaders to elevate their expertise and impact.

Join us as we unravel the details of this prestigious program designed for the modern executive.

What Is An Executive PhD Program?

An Executive PhD Program is a unique beast, designed for seasoned professionals who are ready to elevate their impact.

Picture this: you’re a senior manager with extensive professional experience, but you crave something more, something that a traditional MBA program can’t offer.

Imagine diving into a program that marries the rigors of a doctoral program with the practicalities of the business world.

The Executive PhD in Business, often housed in a prestigious college of business or a business school, is tailored for those who don’t just want to learn about business administration but want to shape it.

The heart of the program lies in its approach to research. You won’t just be a doctoral student; you’ll be an applied researcher, delving into complex business problems. In executive PhD, you usually focus on areas with relevance to your professional work like:

  • Strategic management,
  • Business analytics,
  • International business, and

You’ll join a cohort of like-minded professionals, each bringing their own wealth of knowledge and leadership experience.

Executive PhD is designed to be completed while you continue working. This means you can apply your newfound knowledge in real-time, transforming your workplace even as you study.

The dissertation process in the Executive PhD is not just about producing new knowledge; it’s about employing rigorous research methods that blend theory and practice.

Faculty will support and guide you as you produce publishable research that employs varied qualitative and quantitative research methods.

How Does Executive PhD Program Work?

Embarking on an Executive PhD program is like stepping into a new realm where academic rigour meets real-world business acumen.

Designed for working professionals, particularly those with substantial leadership experience, this program allows you to continue your career while pursuing an advanced degree. Think of it as a bridge linking the world of academia with the dynamic landscape of business leadership.

As you delve into the program, you’ll find it is meticulously structured to cater to the needs of seasoned business professionals.

Unlike traditional PhD programs, the Executive PhD is often part-time and may offer online classes, making it more accessible for those balancing a demanding career.

You become part of a cohort, a group of like-minded individuals who not only share your professional interests but also contribute to a rich learning environment through their diverse experiences.

One of the program’s core elements is its focus on applied research. Here, you’re not just a doctoral student; you’re an applied researcher addressing complex business challenges.

The dissertation, a pivotal part of the doctoral journey, is not merely an academic exercise. Instead, it’s an opportunity to explore and contribute new knowledge to your field, using rigorous research methods that blend both qualitative and quantitative skills.

The Executive PhD in Business Administration, for instance, might offer concentrations in areas like:

  • International business, or
  • Organisational behaviour.

This specialisation allows you to tailor your studies to your specific research interests and career goals.

The business school faculty, often composed of esteemed professionals and academics, provide invaluable guidance, ensuring your research is both impactful and relevant.

Completing an Executive PhD gives you added credibility in the business community. It’s a testament to your ability to combine extensive professional experience with academic insights, elevating your status to that of a thought leader.

This degree goes beyond mere academic achievement; it’s about enhancing your capacity to influence and innovate in today’s complex business environment.

What Is The Difference Between Executive PhD and Traditional PhD?

When you compare an Executive PhD with a traditional PhD, you’re looking at two distinct paths converging at the same destination – a doctoral degree, but with different journeys.

The Executive PhD is a newer concept, designed with working professionals in mind, especially those who have already carved a niche in their field and are looking to deepen their expertise.

The traditional PhD, often found in academia, is a full-time, immersive program focusing on developing new knowledge and research skills. It’s ideal for those aiming for a career in academia or research-intensive roles.

The journey typically involves a deep dive into a specific area of study, with a significant emphasis on original research and contributing new insights to the field.

On the other hand, the Executive PhD, typically offered by business schools or colleges of business, is tailored for senior managers and business leaders with extensive professional experience.

This program blends the rigour of doctoral education with practical business applications. It’s a part-time, more flexible option, often including online classes, allowing you to maintain your professional commitments while pursuing your degree.

A key difference lies in the nature of the dissertation. In a traditional PhD, the focus is on theoretical research, contributing new academic knowledge.

In contrast, the Executive PhD dissertation often involves applied research, addressing real-world business challenges, and employing varied qualitative and quantitative research methods. It’s not just about theory; it’s about applying that theory to practice.

Additionally, the Executive PhD program offers concentrations in areas like:

  • Strategic management, or
  • International business.

Aside from these, you are also free to align your studies with the specific interests and career goals of business professionals.

The cohort model of the Executive program also fosters a collaborative learning environment, where you learn not just from the curriculum but from the diverse experiences of your peers.

While both paths lead to a doctoral degree, the Executive PhD is designed for those ready to apply their expertise in new and fulfilling ways, blending their professional experience with academic rigour to become more impactful leaders in the business community.

Is Executive PhD Better Than Traditional PhD?

An executive PhD and a traditional PhD are like two highly specialised tools, each designed for a specific job. The question of which is ‘better’ depends largely on your professional goals and where you see yourself in the future.

An Executive PhD, offered by many a business school or college of business, caters to seasoned business professionals.

It’s a program designed for those who have already climbed the corporate ladder and are looking to further enhance their skills in executive leadership, strategic management, or business analytics.

The beauty of this program lies in its practicality.

You learn theories and then apply them directly to your current role, making the learning process immediately relevant and impactful. The cohorts are usually smaller, fostering a more intimate and collaborative learning environment.

On the other hand, a traditional PhD program is typically more research-focused and theoretical. It’s ideal if you’re aiming for a career in academia or a field that demands a high level of specialised research.

Here, you dive deep into a specific area, with the goal of producing new knowledge, often through extensive dissertation work.

Ultimately, the choice between an Executive PhD and a traditional PhD hinges on your career trajectory.

If you’re a business professional looking to elevate your existing expertise and apply it in new and fulfilling ways, an Executive PhD could be the perfect fit. If your aspirations lie in academia or in a research-intensive role, a traditional PhD might be the better route.

Each program offers a different set of benefits and caters to different needs, making them both valuable in their own right.

Wrapping Up: Both Traditional and Executive Ph.D Are Great

Executive PhD programs stands as a beacon for experienced professionals seeking to deepen their expertise while continuing their career.

It uniquely combines academic rigour with practical business insights, making it an ideal choice for those aspiring to reach new heights in leadership and innovation.
