Check out this report by the Alzheimer' Society of Canada. It is estimated that over 600,000 Canadian Citizens has been inflicted with a neurocognitive disorder. This reports estimates that by 2050, over 6 million Canadians will be impacted by this condition, with an average of 685 individuals being diagnosed each day. The impact of dementia on Canada’s health-care system will be huge, and theres a responsibility of health-care and research to find solutions.

Canada needs bold action to head off an impending dementia care crisis. This new report from the Alzheimer Society of Canada says actions to reduce risk have potential to change the future of dementia in Canada — if governments act now.

Our West Vancouver team attended the Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s Climb for Alzheimer's last week! The Climb raised over $106,000 for people living with Alzheimer's. Over 250 people participated in the climb. Our team was present to raise awareness for our Memory Clinics - our memory clinic offers patients a medical grade memory test that gives them a concrete baseline, and helps track potential memory decline.

“Superbugs are strains of bacteria and fungi, that are resistant to most of the antibiotics used to treat the infections they cause. A few examples of superbugs include resistant bacteria that can cause pneumonia, urinary tract infections and skin infections,” said Dr. Issa Ephtimios, medical lead for infectious diseases at Kelowna General Hospital. Dr. Ephtimios is currently the lead investigator on a clinical study in collaboration with the Medical Arts Health Research Group in Kelowna. This study targets superbugs and aims to find new treatment for C. Difficile.

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control its sleep-wake cycles. People with narcolepsy may feel rested after waking but feel very sleepy throughout the day. Narcolepsy can affect daily activities. Symptoms may result in unwillingly falling asleep at random times, even when driving, eating, or talking. Other symptoms may include sudden muscle weakness while awake (that makes a person go limp or unable to move), vivid dream-like images or hallucinations, and total paralysis just before falling asleep or just after waking up.

Antibiotics are one of the most used medications in the Western World. They are used to treat almost all bacterial infections. But, and this is a big but, the misuse of antibiotics has caused some bacteria to become immune to antibiotics. These treatment resistant strains of bacteria are also referred to as "Superbugs". Superbugs pose an immense treat to our healthcare system and are often contagious. One of these superbugs is the Clostridioides Difficile, or C. Diff. C. Diff often occurs in patients who've recently been treated with antibiotics or were recently admitted to a hospital. Symptoms of C. Diff include severe diarrhea, fever, stomach tenderness/pain, reduced appetite, and nausea. Clinical researchers are working hard on finding treatment options for superbugs.
