What you should know about HEC's new PhD policy

According to hec chairman tariq banuri, one can now apply for a phd after 16 years of education.

phd after mba in pakistan

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday notified a new PhD policy.

According to HEC Chairman Tariq Banuri, one can now apply for a PhD after 16 years of education as now the requirement for MS and MPhil prior to a PhD has been removed. The new policy will be effective from January 1, 2021.

The new policy will not be fully applicable to already enrolled PhD students in universities, however, alumni may benefit from some sections of the policy.

Moreover, for the first time in the history of Pakistan, this policy has removed the requirement for doctoral students to pursue a PhD in their own discipline.

The doors of an MPhil leading  to PhD for students are kept closed, however, MS/MPhil degrees can be obtained on the basis of required qualifications.

PhD students are also barred from leaving their home country for at least two years.

According to the notification, the requirement to send PhD dissertations to foreign experts for review will also be removed and pupils will now be allowed to send these for review to Pakistani academicians.

Your guide to pursuing a phd in pakistan.

phd after mba in pakistan

It is that time of the year. Universities in Pakistan are aggressively promoting higher-ed opportunities. Full-page advertisements in the newspapers are alerting potential applicants to the looming application deadlines.

Buyer beware.

If you are planning to pursue higher education in Pakistan, particularly at the doctoral level, you most probably are unaware of your rights and obligations as a doctoral student.

An aura of commercialism surrounds the advertisements for academic degrees that are showcased in the same space and light as are the ads for the new models of mobile phones. Theses 'education ads' read like promotion flyers from diploma mills; all sorts of degrees in all possible academic disciplines are available.

You must hurry before the “special offer” runs out.

The announcements for doctoral studies are no different. There is no mention of the “distinguished” faculty members or specialised research labs that should convince one to withdraw from the labour market in one’s productive years and embrace the life of a graduate student, which is punctuated with poverty and uncertainty.

Take a look: Enough PhD’s, thank you

Instead, a laundry list of academic disciplines offering admissions in doctoral studies is on display in the advertisements.

Some universities are inviting potential doctoral students to appear for interviews so that the universities may evaluate their admissibility.

Students, turn the tables on universities

I encourage students to use this opportunity to instead probe universities for why should one consider spending several years toiling as a low-income, and at times, no-income worker.

Even in urban areas, where literacy rates are progressively better than elsewhere, ordinary people seldom know of individuals who might have pursued research and scholarship at the doctoral level.

At least in cities, there is no shortage of highly-qualified personnel, for instance, engineers and doctors.

On almost every street corner, one can find a grocery store, a mosque and a clinic. But it is hard to find scholars in the same public space. This disadvantages those who would like to pursue doctoral studies, but they lack mentoring to know what to expect from the university and the research supervising committee.

What you should know before applying

Before you apply for doctoral studies at a university in Pakistan, you need to learn a little about the school, and a lot about yourself — you must have the temperament to persevere.

Doctoral-level research is not a team sport. For years, you will toil alone searching for answers that are usually hard to come by. Uncertainty is the name of the game. You might have your Eureka moment in a year, or if you are like most others, it could take up to five or more years. There is still no guarantee that you would ever finish.

Regardless of how much (or little) research funding you receive, it will not be sufficient to support you as an individual. If you have a family with children, think very hard before embarking doctoral studies. The financial stress during your studies could harm your health and relationships.

You must also determine if you are a good writer. Doctoral dissertations, with some exceptions, are written documents. The ability to document research is critical to your success.

Furthermore, academic writing differs from other forms of writing and follows strict norms and styles. For instance, bibliographies are most often generated in either APA or MLA style. There are hundreds, if not more, discipline-specific styles of academic referencing and writing.

Since you would have already completed studies at the Masters level, one expects the applicants in a doctoral programme to be proficient with the academic style of writing.

If you have already published your Masters level research in academic journals of good repute, your academic bonafides are established. If not, have you either submitted a paper to a journal or thought about it?

If you have not, I would suggest that you take a year pushing your already completed research to academic outlets. This experience alone will help you evaluate your prospects for doctoral studies.

Applicants, who have already published their research in academic outlets, are the most coveted ones. They are fought over by universities who try to woo these applicants with lavish funding and other perks.

Learning the art and craft of academic publishing, before you apply to doctoral studies, is in your financial interest as well.

Lastly, you should have a well-reasoned research proposal at the time of application.

Unlike the undergraduate admissions, where one shows up with a diploma from a high school, you must prepare a well-reasoned and detailed research proposal, identifying the original contribution you would like to make in your research.

If you show up empty-handed, be ready to be either denied admissions or to leave empty-handed five years henceforth.

What you should expect from the university

As a doctoral student, you are entitled to research funding, academic support, mentorship, research resources, scholarship, an environment conducive for research and free of intimidation.

Regrettably, there are hardly any universities in Pakistan that offer the bare minimum in what should be provided to doctoral students.

Before you apply, you should learn about the researchers in your intended field of study, and what they have accomplished. There is no point having a doctoral supervisor who does not work in the area you would like to specialise in.

In fact, the most important choice to make in doctoral studies is not about the institution, but about the individual. You must identify the professor, whose work you have read (and hopefully understand) and feel comfortable that his or her research interests for the next five to 10 years will be in congruence with yours.

You should also probe who else teaches in the same department or faculty that could be part of your supervisory committee. You need at least three other academics whose research interests intersect with your research proposal.

Together, your supervisory committee will provide the intellectual breadth and depth to help you steer your research.

Also read: Research culture in Pakistan — The ‘undisclosed’ moral decadence

Your thesis supervisor should be competent and available — you can judge a supervisor’s competence by reviewing their published research in international journals.

Start with Google Scholar to see if your supervisor of interest has published in quality journals that are ranked by Impact Factors.

Stay clear of those academics who publish in journals that do not have an Impact Factor or its equivalent. Additionally, avoid academics who publish different versions of the same paper in multiple publications.

A supervisor has to be available to mentor you. You are better off avoiding the one who is rarely on campus, takes long summer vacations abroad, fails to meet regularly (at least once a month, if not more), does not provide timely feedback on submitted materials and does not contribute to your overall intellectual growth.

You can only learn about this by speaking with the current doctoral students of your proposed supervisor. In fact, you should never select a doctoral supervisor before conversing with their graduate students.

As an applicant, you should ask the university about its procedures, resources, and strengths.

The university must share with you a copy of its academic policies that explicitly defines the roles, responsibilities, and obligations of those involved. The university must also offer you a substantial financial package, subject to your performance in order to sustain you during doctoral studies.

The commitment should be in writing, advising you of the amounts, their disbursement methods and schedules. In fact, the financial package should be guaranteed in a written letter to you. Furthermore, you must show the admission documents to a lawyer before you sign off on it.

Read: How the HEC is wronging Pakistan's scholars

The university must also guarantee the necessary lab space and resources so that you do not waste years waiting for the equipment to arrive. The university must also guarantee ready access to journals, books, and other resources needed for your research. All of this, you must ask about during your interview.

My biggest concern is about the intellectual environment at most universities where doctoral supervisors behave as dictators running academic fiefdoms, often exploiting those who work under them.

Just visit a university campus in Pakistan to see how doctoral supervisors treat graduate students as minions.

This culture of exploitation should change. Universities must produce charter of rights that the students and their supervisors should sign.

For instance, Ryerson University, where I teach, requires graduate students, professors, and supervisory committees to be mindful of their responsibilities. Their respective rights and obligations are enshrined in university policies.

Let your admission interview be the reverse interview where you interview the interviewers.

Show up prepared, armed with questions and seek information.

LUMS Financial Aid

Admission to all Programmes is purely on merit and independent of students’ ability to pay the related tuition fees. Once a student has been admitted to a Programme, there are several mechanisms in place to provide financial support based on need and merit. All awards are reassessed each academic year based on performance, need, available resources and prevailing University policies. LUMS is committed to providing as much financial assistance as possible within the limits of its available resources. Nevertheless, the University may not be able to meet all requests for financial assistance, and it is strongly recommended that applicants secure as much of their own funding as possible.

Your financial need and your aid application does not affect your chances of admission.

Several Merit and Need-Based Scholarships are available for students who meet specific criteria.

LUMS Interest-Free Loan

Merit scholarship.

  • Women Scholarship - 50% tuition fee waiver will be awarded to women admitted on high merit under the SDSB Women's Scholarship initiative

These scholarships can potentially help students cover the costs of education and related expenses (i.e. books, accommodation and living). The eligibility depends upon a number of factors, all of which are specified by the donor who offers the scholarships.

In order to be considered for any kind of external scholarships, students are required to apply for financial aid at the time of applying for admission at LUMS.

MCB - Student Personal Loan

LUMS has entered into an agreement with MCB Bank Limited through which MCB Bank provides commercial loans to MBA/EMBA students.

This is one of the first ventures of its kind in Pakistan and demonstrates LUMS' commitment towards providing equal educational opportunities to its students.

All loans are subject to the Bank’s internal approvals and MCB Bank reserves the right to approve/disapprove a loan based on its internal assessment. In case a loan is not approved, students will be required to provide the total fees and expenses of the education themselves.

At LUMS, we believe that financial circumstances should never stand in the way. To help, LUMS offers Interest-Free loans to the students from less privileged backgrounds who, without such assistance, would not be able to attend a university.

The repayment of these Interest-Free loans starts six (6) months after graduation with time period of 3 to 5 years.

Students Can Now Apply for Ph.D. Directly After BS Degrees

phd after mba in pakistan

Higher Education Commission (HEC) has reportedly revised its policy for Ph.D. admissions on 1 January 2021.

Under the revised policy, students can also apply for Ph.D. directly after four-year BS programs.

Drugs Worth Billions Seized From Sea

The policy states that the minimum duration of a Ph.D. degree will be three years while the maximum duration of the degree will be eight years.

It has also abolished the requirement of having a previous qualification in the same discipline in order to apply for a specific Ph.D. program.

In case of non-implementation or violation of the policy, HEC would take action against universities ranging from warnings, suspension or revocation of NOC for admissions, and non-verification of credentials.

Is it Possible to Get My PhD After My MBA?

MBA graduate contemplating PhD degree

In academia, numerous accomplishments can be achieved. You can earn a dual degree and have expertise in multiple fields, or further your career potential by going back to school . But what about progressing from an MBA to a PhD?

In regards to higher education, many consider earning a PhD, or doctorate degree, the pinnacle of success. Usually, due to passion for a particular industry or subject, a PhD candidate will spend years of rigorous research to unpack its intricacies and become a leading expert in the field.  At the end of their studies, they are able to finally see their work come to fruition when they receive their doctorate and join alongside other scholars. However, is it typical for an MBA graduate to move onto pursuing their PhD? And is there a specific purpose? Are there different types of PhD programs? What is the difference between a PhD and DBA?

To answer the budding question: yes, you can pursue your PhD after earning your MBA, and choosing to earn a doctorate is entirely up to you and your aspirations. To help you better understand if getting a PhD is the right choice, we look at the path an MBA graduate can take to earn their PhD, one of the higher purposes of a doctorate, and the different types of academic programs.

What is a PhD, and What is it Used For?

By definition, a PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy in a particular discipline, which is why it's also referred to as a doctorate. This focus is typically for individuals highly passionate about a specific subject matter, driven by the pursuit to understand it better through rigorous research. A majority of students seeking their PhD are eager researchers, although there are always exceptions, and each carries out years of highly intensive research to conclude their original thesis and earn their doctorate.

In terms of translating your education into a career, a doctorate can be used in a plethora of fields, especially if one’s thesis is around a wider subject matter and can be a discipline applied to various industries (take organizational development, for example). For those who are passionate about a career in research, a doctoral degree is a perfect fit. Possibly the most popular field for those with a doctorate is a fruitful career in academia, teaching their subject matter to others interested in the same area. Many graduates become faculty members at business schools upon completing their PhD and provide their expertise to their students. Regardless of which industry you choose, you can be assured that a PhD will provide you with numerous opportunities.

How Long Does it Take to Progress from an MBA to PhD?

The timeframe for earning your PhD can vary depending on program and location. Many countries have varying timelines of how long the completion of a doctoral program will take. In the United States, the average is around 4-5 years of completion after receiving your Master of Business Administration.

Do You Need an MBA to Get a PhD?

To be accepted into a doctoral program, you must have a master’s degree. It does not have to be a Master of Business Administration, but it does need to be a master’s of some form. Depending on your area of specialization, it could be advantageous to earn your MBA in pursuit of a PhD if you are planning to embark on a career in business upon completion of your doctorate. Additionally, one important aspect to consider is the program itself. It is important to look into a program’s requirements before applying to meet the eligibility criteria.

The Difference Between a DBA and a PhD

For those specifically interested in a career in business, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a highly beneficial doctoral program. A DBA focuses on a broader spectrum of business disciplines, dedicating research toward multiple corporate facets, and practical implementation. On the contrary, a PhD narrows into a specific area of discipline and research, emphasizing theory, and it’s potential implications. While both are heavily centered around research and implementation, a DBA sets business executives and leaders on a path to discover new possibilities for their organizations and businesses. In a way, it allows established business professionals to “trailblaze” the way for new and innovative ideas that can disrupt the market and set a precedent for the future of business.

What to do After Secondary School Certificate

Students have a number of options after high school board examinations. Most of the students opt for a higher secondary school certificate (HSSC) also known as intermediate. There are various subjects and group options for intermediate including Pre-medical, pre-engineering, ICS, ICOM, general science, and arts groups. Some of the students go for vocational education including certificate and diploma courses after matric. The most common diploma after matric is the Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE). DAE students can now also pursue higher education options just like Inter students, as DAE is equivalent to FSc.

Intermediate or FA/FSc students have better career options as this path leads to higher education or Bachelor’s degree programs. Having an undergraduate degree not only increases job options but also offers lucrative career options. However, students who are in need of financial help can opt for diploma or certificate courses after matric. This is pertinent to mention here that hundreds of thousands of scholarships are offered to students to pursue higher education. Financial assistance programs by the universities, government, and private NGOs are offered to the students to help them pursue higher education. A monthly stipend is also offered to such students, ranging from PKR: 4,000 to PKR: 40,000/- The scholarship-offering institutions include the Government of Pakistan, HEC indigenous Scholarships, PEEF scholarships, and many other undergraduate degree scholarships. So if you are just considering the option of vocational education because you cannot afford the cost of education, then you must consider going for higher education and explore scholarship options.
