Why worksheets & homework activities?

Worksheets are great practice for kids after class. You can print them out on your own and let your child write on the characters on the worksheet. By following the correct stroke order, your child can learn the Chinese Hanzi characters better. We also find that many kids love the process of writing characters, and so do adults. It’s relaxing!

It’s always good to mix sources for your child’s Chinese language study. This is why it’s good to, aside taking a language course for kids at GoEast, watch Chinese movies for kids, apps for kids, or read from Chinese books for kids. This isn’t just more fun, it’s also educationally sound. These layers of different skills are applied together. And this is also why adding worksheets to the mix is educational.

7 Apps That Can Do Your Homework Much Faster Than You

7 Apps That Will Do Your Homework For You

In the field of educational technology, some apps might be getting too smart.

More and more apps are delivering on-demand homework help to students, who can easily re-purpose the learning tools to obtain not just assistance, but also answers. Whether or not that’s cheating—and how to stop it—is one of the concerns surrounding a new app that can solve math equations with the snap of a camera . While the software has inspired teachers to create real-world homework problems that can’t be automatically solved , that strategy doesn’t hold up to other apps that tap into real-life brains for solutions.

Here’s a look at 7 apps that can do your homework for you, and what they have to say about cheating:

Price : Free Availability : iOS, Android app coming in early 2015

The new, seemingly magic app allows users to take pictures of typed equations, and then outputs a step-by-step solution. As of Wednesday, the app is the number one free app on the App Store. But the biggest issue, one teacher argues , isn’t if students will use the app to cheat, because many will. Rather, it’s about how teachers will adapt. A PhotoMath spokeswoman said educators have welcomed the app with positive reviews, but the software remains “quite controversial.”

“We didn’t develop PhotoMath as a cheating tool. We really wanted kids to learn,” said Tijana Zganec, a sales and marketing associate at tech company MicroBlink, which created PhotoMath. “If you want to cheat, you will find a way to cheat. But if you want to learn, you can use PhotoMath for that.”

Whether you’re a high schooler with eight periods of classes or a college student tackling dozens of credits, there’s one thing you’ve got for sure: a mess of assignments. iHomework can help you keep track of all your work, slicing and dicing it in a variety of ways. Sorting it by due date, week, month, or by course, the app is more organized than a Trapper Keeper. And in integrating data from Questia, you can link your reading material to your assignments so you don’t have to dig through a pile of papers to find the right information.

A scheduling feature can help you keep track of those random bi-weekly Thursday labs, and you can even mark the location of your courses on a map so you don’t end up on the wrong side of campus. And finally, with iCloud syncing, you can access all this information on whatever Apple-compatible device you’re using at the moment — no need to dig for your iPad.

Google Apps for Education

Taking the search giant’s suite of free browser-based apps and sandboxing them so they are safe for school use, Google Apps for Education is an excellent alternative to the mainstream installable productivity software, but this one has a perk that almost school board will love—it’s free. Packaging together favorites like Gmail, Hangouts, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive with Classroom, a digital hub for organizing assignments and sending feedback, the goal of this collection is to make learning a more collaborative process.

Though Google Apps for Education is cloud-hosted, the programs can be used offline, ideal for when your student needs to escape the internet and work distraction-free. And since it works on any device, it also helps students avoid buying overly expensive hardware. That means more money for extracurricular activities.

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS and Android

HwPic is a tutoring service that allows students to take send pictures of their homework to tutors, who will then respond within minutes to your questions with a step-by-step solution. There’s even an option to expedite the answers if a student is in a hurry. HwPic Co-Founder Tiklat Issa said that the app was initially rejected by Apple’s App Store, which believed it would promote cheating, but he successfully argued that just because someone uses the app in a way that it’s not meant to be used doesn’t mean the app should be punished.

Issa added that HwPic prohibits cheating in its terms and conditions. Tutors don’t solve homework that has words like “Quiz” or “Exam,” and they often know if a student is sending a photo during a test if they’ve paid for expedited answers, and if the photo is dim, blurry and taken under a desk. “We’ve minimized cheating,” said Issa. “We haven’t eliminated it. That’s kind of unrealistic.”

Wolfram Alpha

Price : $2.99 Availability : iOS and Android

Wolfram Alpha is similar to PhotoMath, only that it targets older students studying high levels of math and doesn’t support photos. The service also outputs step-by-step solutions to topics as advanced as vector calculus and differential equations, making it a popular tool for college students.

“It’s cheating not doing computer-based math, because we’re cheating students out of real conceptual understanding and an ability to drive much further forward in the math they can do, to cover much more conceptual ground. And in turn, that’s cheating our economies,” said Conrad Wolfram, Wolfram Research’s Director of Strategic Development, in a TEDx Talk . “People talk about the knowledge economy. I think we’re moving forward to what we’re calling the computational knowledge economy.”

Homework Helper

Price: Free Availability: iOS and Android

Chinese Internet search company Baidu launched an app called Homework Helper this year with which students can crowdsource help or answers to homework. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forums, and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy electronics like iPhones and laptops.

The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the dismay of many some parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems. A Homework Helper staffer admitted to Quartz , “I think this is a kind of cheating.”

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS

Slader is a crowdsourcing app for high school and college students to post and answer questions in math and science. While students can post original homework for help, many questions in popular textbooks have already been answered on the app, according to Fast Company . An Illinois high school said earlier this year that it suspected students were using the service to cheat on their math homework.

Slader argues that it’s “challenging traditional ideas about math and education,” and said that the ideas behind its app “aren’t a write-off to teachers,” according to its blog . Slader told San Francisco media outlet KQED that it shouldn’t be dismissed as a cheating tool, but rather considered a way for students to access real-time help.

Dear Duolingo: What kind of Chinese does Duolingo teach?

Dear Duolingo: What kind of Chinese does Duolingo teach?

Welcome to another week of Dear Duolingo, an advice column just for learners. Catch up on past installments here .

大家好!We're Tina Tan and Adele Touhey, and we're taking over Dear Duolingo this week! Tina works on Duolingo's Chinese course, and Adele focuses on our Korean course, and we're partnering up since there's something we have in common: We both taught Chinese before joining Duolingo! Our first Dear Duolingo takeover was all about Chinese tones , and this week's question is again about Chinese—but it's also about how languages and speakers vary more generally!

Our question this week:

Alt text: Illustration of a letter to Dear Duolingo that reads: Dear Duolingo, I’ve been taking your Chinese course for a few weeks, and my friends have asked whether it’s traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Mandarin, or Cantonese… but I’m not sure! What's the difference, and which is better to learn if I want to visit China? Thank you, Talk of the Town

What a good question! Yes, Chinese has a pretty complex system which includes different varieties and different writing systems. Whether or not you're studying Chinese, you probably already know that Chinese is pretty different from the other languages you know—and there are some interesting complexities about grammar, writing, and spoken Chinese that will impress all learners.

We’re going to give you a brief introduction to Chinese, explain which variety Duolingo teaches, and discuss what you'll hear and read in China!

What kind of Chinese does Duolingo teach?

Duolingo offers two kinds of courses related to Chinese: courses in Mandarin Chinese with Simplified Characters for English, Japanese, and Vietnamese speakers, and Cantonese in traditional characters for Mandarin speakers.

So, what’s the difference between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese?

Mandarin, also known as Standard Chinese or Putonghua, is the official language of China. Mandarin is based on the Beijing dialect and is the primary language taught in schools and used in government and media. Mandarin is also the most widely spoken language in China. If you ever travel in China, Mandarin is probably the language you will hear the most! For people interested in learning Chinese, Mandarin is the variety you're most likely to start with (and the one you'll find the most resources for).

Cantonese is a major Chinese variety which is primarily spoken in Guangdong province in the south, Hong Kong, and Macau. Cantonese is very different from Mandarin in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, and even grammar. For example, Mandarin only has four tones , but Cantonese has six! That’s why some people might feel like they are listening to another language when they’re hearing Cantonese 😅

Here's an example of how we teach “Nice to meet you” in both Mandarin and Cantonese in our App. You can see how different the vocabulary and the pronunciations are. (You'll see the pronunciations in gray pinyin above the Chinese characters in the speech bubble.)

Mandarin Chinese Cantonese

However, Chinese is more than just Mandarin and Cantonese! There are actually even more varieties of the language that are used in China. 👀

Does everyone in China speak the same language?

Yes and no!

In China, almost everyone learns Mandarin in school, so most people can speak Mandarin, at least to some degree. But since China is so big and has many different regions, a lot of people may also speak a regional variety at home, too.

In general, in addition to Cantonese, there are 6 other major groups of varieties spoken in China:

  • Northern: spoken across most of northern and southwestern China
  • Wu: spoken in the Shanghai region and parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces
  • Gan: predominantly spoken in Jiangxi province
  • Xiang: spoken mainly in Hunan province
  • Min: primarily spoken in Fujian Province and Taiwan
  • Hakka: spoken by the Hakka people in the mountainous regions of southeastern China

The division of Chinese into these seven variety groups is primarily based on linguistic features such as pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, along with historical development and geographic distribution. Some of these Chinese varieties are pretty similar to Mandarin and only differ in pronunciation (like the Northern varieties), but others are more different in terms of grammar (like Cantonese and Hakka).

So can someone from Province A understand someone from Province B? The answer is… it depends! If they both speak Mandarin, yes, naturally. If the people speak different varieties, though, then we can think about mutual intelligibility : whether speakers of one variety understand speakers of another, even if they themselves would say something differently. The Northern varieties are mutually intelligible with Mandarin and with each other. For example, a person from Heilongjiang Province in the northeast can easily understand someone from Hebei province near Beijing.

The dialects spoken in the southern part of China are much more different from each other. Even just within the Guangdong province, someone who speaks Cantonese won’t fully understand someone who speaks Hakka.

But, when it comes to reading and writing, things become easier! People from different parts of China can totally understand each other because all varieties share the same writing system: Hanzi.

The writing system of Chinese

Hanzi is the system of characters used to write Chinese—no matter the variety. Unlike alphabets which are “sounded out,” Hanzi is a logographic script , where each character represents a word or a meaningful component of a word. (More on this in a second.)

In Chinese, you can’t tell the pronunciation of a character by simply looking at it. Instead, you learn the meaning of a character, and you memorize the pronunciation separately. There is also a Romanized way to write the pronunciation of characters, called Pinyin. (That's what was in small gray writing in the screenshots above!)

Since Chinese characters are all about meanings, a lot of characters have a radical . This is a graphical component—part of the overall character—that suggests the general category of the character's meaning:

Radical Meaning of the radical Characters with the radical
female 妈 (mā, mom)
姐 (jiě, older sister)
speech 语 (yǔ, language)
说 (shuō, speak)
water 河 (hé, river)
海 (hǎi, sea)

There are actually two different types of Hanzi scripts: simplified characters and traditional characters. In ancient China, traditional characters were used to write classical Chinese. Then during the 1950s and 1960s, thousands of simplified characters were standardized and adopted in mainland China to promote literacy. Simplified characters are used in mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia, while Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau still use traditional characters.

Here are some examples of traditional-simplified character pairs:

Simplified Character Traditional Character Pinyin English translation
ài love
fēi fly
shēng sound
language

Chinese, a linguistically amazing language!

Chinese is interesting linguistically, in part because of its writing system, and also because it has so many different varieties that reflect the deep cultural and historical diversity of its 1.4 billion speakers! So continue learning, decide where you want to travel, and let us know how many varieties you pick up along the way! 加油 (jiāyóu)! Go for it!

'Forced labor': State AGs probe Chinese company Temu over 'disturbing' business practices

Attorneys general question whether temu products are coming from forced labor of uyghurs.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin details the legal grounds of the state's lawsuit against China-based retailer Temu and former President Trump's court cases.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin details the legal grounds of the state's lawsuit against China-based retailer Temu and former President Trump's court cases.

FIRST ON FOX: A group of Republican state attorneys general is demanding answers from the Chinese e-commerce company Temu, alleging "disturbing" collection of U.S. consumer data and illegal forced labor practices.

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, along with 19 of his GOP colleagues, sent a letter to Temu on Thursday seeking information on the company's business practices and potential ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

"Congressional investigators believe that your company, Temu (which is owned by PDD Holdings), is illegally selling products made by forced labor in an area of China in which the CCP is committing genocide. And PDD Holdings is credibly accused by members of Congress as being linked to the CCP," the letter states.

" Montana has additional concerns about Temu’s and PDD Holding’s data collection practices. Like other companies subject to CCP control, Montana believes that Temu is obligated to collect and send Montana consumer data to the CPP on demand," the letter said.

"The Montana Consumer Data Privacy Act goes into effect on October 1, 2024, and given the CCP’s demonstrated history of using CCP-affiliated companies to target and track U.S. consumers, Montana remains concerned that Temu will flout Montana law," it continued.

The letter makes note of the U.S. House Select Committee on the CCP last year revealing "disturbing information about Temu’s failure to comply with American laws prohibiting the use of forced labor by Uyghurs."

"Temu admitted to the Select Committee that ‘it does not have a policy in place to prohibit the sale of goods from Xinjiang — the location of the CCP’s ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs — on [your] platform.’ Instead, Temu claimed it is not subject to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA),'" the letter noted.

The AGs claimed that the select committee found, "Temu conducts no audits and reports no compliance system to affirmatively examine and ensure compliance with the UFLPA," relying instead on China-based suppliers to voluntarily report violations of "boilerplate terms and conditions that prohibit the use of forced labor."

AMAZON LAUNCHING SHEIN, TEMU COMPETITOR WITH DIRECT SHIPPING FROM CHINA

"Based on the evidence collected, the Select Committee concluded that Temu’s poor compliance system virtually ensures ‘that shipments from Temu containing products made with forced labor are entering the United States on a regular basis, in violation of the UFLPA,’" the AGs state.

The letter goes on to say that Temu's ongoing conduct raises serious concerns about its compliance with state consumer protection laws.

"These concerns extend to products sold exclusively on Temu’s website that fail to adequately warn consumers of dangers associated with their products and fail to notify consumers the products are subject to safety recalls," the AGs write.

The AGs warn that if Temu's "harmful" business practices are left "uncorrected," they "will consider all available measures to protect our citizens."

The top state law enforcement officials gave Temu 30 days to hand over any information related to retention of user data, information the company has given to the CCP, and other details related to their business practices.

Temu did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

READ MORE FROM FOX BUSINESS

"Temu's business practices and apparent ties to the Chinese Communist Party are deeply concerning," Knudsen said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

"As attorney general, it's my job to protect Montanans from bad actors who may be coming after their sensitive consumer data and hold anyone who has violated our consumer protection laws accountable. I look forward to hearing from the company to ensure their business practices are in line with Montana law and data is not being shared with the CCP," he said.

China supports Iran in defending security, foreign minister says

Image: LAOS-ASEAN-DIPLOMACY

China supports Iran in defending its “sovereignty, security and national dignity,” Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told Iran’s acting foreign minister in a phone call on Sunday, according to a statement by China’s foreign ministry.

In the phone call, Wang repeated Beijing’s denunciation of the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, saying the strike had violated Iran’s sovereignty and threatened regional stability.

Iran and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out strike that killed Haniyeh.

Israel has not claimed or denied responsibility for the killing, which has fueled concern that the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip was turning into a wider Middle East war.

Iran has vowed to “harshly punish” Israel over the assassination.

Wang told Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, that the killing of Haniyeh had “directly undermined the Gaza ceasefire negotiation process and undermined regional peace and stability,” China’s foreign ministry said.

“China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law, and in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and stands ready to maintain close communication with Iran,” Wang was quoted as saying.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday nominated Abbas Araqchi as the country’s foreign minister. Araqchi had been Iran’s chief negotiator in nuclear talks from 2013 to 2021.
