In 2019, Baylor set a school-record with seven Fulbright scholarship recipients — part of the nation’s flagship program for international graduate study and education. In 2022, Baylor doubled that record with 14 Fulbrights.
Now, just two years later, a new school record has been set — again — as 18 (!!!) Baylor students and recent alumni have won prestigious Fulbright awards for 2024. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg .
This spring, Baylor Bears have also earned an unprecedented fourth Churchill Scholarship in four years (Baylor’s first four years in the program), a school-record four Critical Language Scholarships from the U.S. Department of State, and a school-record three Goldwater Scholarships. But the list doesn’t stop there; Bears also won two NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, a Boren Scholarship, and a GEM Fellowship.
Here’s the (lengthy) list of honorees, along with where the honors will take them:
(Learn more about each of the honorees and their awards in this press release .)
“Another record-setting year is thrilling, primarily because of what it means for the students who have been afforded these opportunities to live and study and serve around the world,” says Dr. Andrew Hogue (MA ’05, PhD ’09), associate dean for engaged learning at Baylor. “This is a sign that our students have been transformed by their faculty and staff mentors, have achieved at the highest levels, and are fully prepared for a lifetime of worldwide leadership and service.”
Sic ’em, Bears!

REDDICK, Fla. (WCJB) - Marion County deputies arrested a 14-year-old North Marion High School student they say was responsible for sexually assaulting a 91-year-old woman in Reddick.
On Monday, they announced that 14-year-old Jesse Stone was arrested for sneaking into the woman’s home shortly before midnight on June 8 and sexually battering her.
Last week, sheriff’s officials asked the Reddick community for help identifying the suspect.
RELATED: ‘It angered folks’: Marion County Sheriff’s Officials release details on elderly sexual battery case
Stone eventually admitted to investigators that he illegally entered the woman’s home, watched pornography on her iPad, and then entered her room about 15 minutes before midnight.
Deputies say Stone jumped onto the woman in bed, who tried fighting back. They say he punched the woman several times in the face before sexually assaulting her. At some point, investigators say Stone suddenly stopped and left.
The day after the crime, the 91-year-old described the suspect to investigators as a “dark shadow” that came down the hallway, and into her bedroom.
The woman told investigators that earlier in the day on June 8, Jesse Stone, nicknamed “Randy John”, stopped at her house to talk with her. She said the teen stopped by often when he was younger to talk.
The elderly woman described Stone as a “good boy” who she enjoyed talking with, noting that she didn’t know anything about the people he hung out with.
The woman told deputies that she left her front door unlocked during the day, which Stone used to enter the home.
A man who lives nearby gave deputies security camera footage from the night of the sexual assault. Detectives say a person could be seen jogging wearing a NASA t-shirt and gym shorts.
Deputies say Stone passed by on his bike while they were investigating, wearing the same NASA t-shirt and gym shorts. Stone initially told investigators that he wasn’t out the night before, but later said he was.
Deputies say DNA collected at the crime scene matched samples taken from Stone.
On Monday, investigators went to North Marion High School to pick up Stone for an interview. He eventually admitted to sexually battering the elderly woman.
Stone was arrested on felony assault and sexual battery charges.
In a press release sent out after Stone’s arrest, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said, “I told everyone last week that we would find the person responsible, and we have. I’m very proud of the hard work that my detectives and forensics team have done on this case to bring about a quick closure”.
“It came as a shock that any individual would commit such an act on a 91-year-old, but it is truly disturbing when we see the young age of the arrestee”.

LITCHFIELD, CT (WFSB) - It is the start of something new and the end of an era.
Students at Litchfield High School will be graduating on Monday night, but their school is going away.
Next year students at Litchfield High will merge with students at Wamogo and there will be a new high school.
Graduation is a special time and 60 seniors at the school will be graduating.
These are the last seniors to graduate from Litchfield High School. Next year the school will be no more.
“I know a lot of people were not happy with it but I know a lot of people are looking forward to it and I think people will get over it,” said Gage Rohrer, one of the graduating seniors.
This is all part of a regionalization plan to merge these students with those at Wamogo, becoming Region 20. This will include students from Warren, Morris, and Goshen.
Starting next year, all of these students will be together at what is now Wamogo and will have a new name: Lakeview High School.
“The four towns came together after many years and said this was the right time to do it for various reasons. We are looking forward to getting this started. It’s been a long couple of years and a lot of work eing done by a lot of people. Looking forward to seeing it come together,” said Mike Pascento, Principal.
The old Litchfield High School will be the new home for the middle school, grades 6-8, and will be called Plumb Hill Middle School.
Alyssa Dileone is excited about the future as she sings the school’s alma mater, knowing it may not be sung again.
“Yes I think it is sad. This is a song from over 30 years ago that was created for the school,” she said.
The transition is underway, and everyone is working hard to make the change starting in the fall.

Lake county news-sun | waukegan to college program celebrates 100th college graduate; ‘it gives them the confidence to pursue the possible’.
When it came time for her college graduation from the University of Illinois Springfield in May, Plummer was there, proud of her accomplishment and planning to eventually embark on a career in public health in her hometown, a choice influenced in part by her going to school during the pandemic.
“The experience showed me why public health is so important to the community,” she said. “It made me realize what public health can do for us as a country and a community.”
Plummer was one of 16 college and 24 high school graduates honored as part of Waukegan to College’s annual celebration Saturday at Waukegan High School’s Brookside campus, which also marked the organization’s 100th college graduate.
Now in its 15th year, Waukegan to College helps first-generation college students — many the children of immigrants, and some immigrants themselves — navigate the process of getting into college and graduating. It provides mentoring, tutoring and more.
Board member Joan Boughton said Waukegan to College has helped nearly 300 students navigate the college process, gain admittance and financial aid. Of those, 95% have graduated in four years, which eclipses the national average of 62%.
“We have a goal of 1,000 students with 10,000 dreams by 2029,” she said.
Executive Director Aaron Arnold told the crowd of several hundred people a course of study may change while a student is in college, but the dream must remain.
“Keep your eyes on your dream,” he said. “It will nurture you and give you strength. It’s your dream, not anybody else’s dream.”
Of the 16 college seniors in Waukegan to College’s current graduating class, many like Plummer were at the event, but Syed Hussaini was not. He was in Hanover, N.H., with his family preparing to graduate from Dartmouth College the following day.
Arnold said Hussaini was picked as the 100th graduate among his 16 classmates in part because he could not be at Saturday’s event.
Though Hussaini was not yet a graduate, eight newly minted college alums like Plummer were there to celebrate with their classmates. She said the networking she developed through Waukegan to College helped her since she joined the program in 2015.
“It’s become a big part of who I am,” Plummer said. “I’ve met a lot of people. It helped me get an internship.”
With plans to take a year off from her schooling, Plummer said she intends to get a master’s degree before she begins her career in public health. She plans to make her home in Waukegan.
U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Highland Park, engages with Waukegan to College students along with his duties in the U.S. House of Representatives. He said he had the opportunity to develop a relationship with Gilberto Colin, now a board member.
Colin got his undergraduate degree from DePaul University, obtained an MBA from Marquette University and is now in the finance industry doing private equity. He makes his home in Waukegan.
“This is where I want to give back,” Colin said. “It’s very accessible, and this is where I want to make a difference.”
Schneider, who was also a speaker at the event, said during his speech Waukegan to College is, “an outstanding role model for our community,” giving people an opportunity to achieve.
“It opens windows for people,” Schneider said after the event. “It gives them the confidence to pursue the possible. They learn how to see the world as a place where they can be successful.”
Valeria Mencia recently graduated from National Louis University after finishing Waukegan High School in 2020. She said she intends to eventually start a not-for-profit organization focusing on women and children. The dream started with a research paper.
“People were not getting all the resources they could,” she said. “Most advocates were focusing on violence and abuse. There is a need for other resources.”
Mencia said she started working with Waukegan to College as a seventh grader. She came to Waukegan with her family from Mexico as a dreamer. She said she is now awaiting her green card making her a legal resident.
Along with the college graduates, the event honored those who graduated from high school and are heading to college. Of the 24 in the class, 16 were at the ceremony. They each had a sign indicating their college choice. Their dreams include medicine and journalism.
Andrea Palma plans to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She started working with Waukegan to College as a sophomore. It helped her develop a friend group in high school with others who shared her goals and dreams.
Leslie Solorio, who plans a career in journalism, will be going to Knox College in Galesburg. She said she joined Waukegan to College in eighth grade at her mother’s suggestion.
“She said education is the key to getting ahead,” Solorio said.
Juliana Reyes plans to attend the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. She said she joined Waukegan to College as a high school junior. It made her journey easier.
“It helped relieve a lot of pressures,” Reyes said. “It provided a lot of resources.”
