Research task (Legends: Arceus)

Please feel free to edit this article to add missing information and complete it.

Research tasks (Japanese: 図鑑タスク encyclopedia task ) are goals set by Professor Laventon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus . Each Pokémon has a different array of tasks specific to them. This is an exclusive feature for the Hisui Pokédex .

Each research task goal met grants research levels and research points. The player must make a survey report to Professor Laventon at a base camp in order to receive credit for their progress. If the player has unreported progress, they will not be able to return to Jubilife Village .

The research points counter is capped at 99,999, even though there are a total of 125,200 points available. Upon reaching this cap, the counter in the Pokédex Progress Report screen will no longer be dynamically incremented, but a breakdown of the points that would be added, along with the audio for the latter, remains.

Research level

Each Pokémon has an associated research level. Until a Pokémon has been caught, its research level is 0. Meeting a research task goal increases that Pokémon's research level. (Goals can accumulate before a Pokémon is caught and will become valid after it is caught.) Most goals increase the Pokémon's research level by 1, but any goals marked by two upward-pointing arrows increase the research level by 2. Arceus is a special case, having only one research task goal that grants all 10 research levels at once.

The maximum research level for Pokémon is 10. When this is reached, the research level will be preceded by "Complete!" If all goals are completed, this becomes "Perfect!" Reaching complete or perfect research will increase the chances of finding that Pokémon as a Shiny Pokémon .

When Arceus and all non- Mythical species have reached research level 10, Cyllene will give the player the Shiny Charm .

A Pokémon's Pokédex page is also slowly filled out as its research level increases.

Research points

Research points are required to increase the player's rank in the Galaxy Expedition Team . Most tasks grant 10 points per goal, but tasks marked by two upward-pointing arrows give 20 points. Arceus is a special case, having only one research task that grants 100 research points at once.

Reaching complete research (research level 10) for any Pokémon will grant a bonus 100 research points.

List of research tasks

Any task with a point value of more than 10 is marked with two upward-pointing arrows in the Pokédex. The number of research levels that a task grants is effectively equal to points / 10 .

The task "Number of different forms you've obtained" applies to both regional forms and gender differences , but does not count other different forms separately (such as Cherrim or Shaymin 's forms), nor Shiny or alpha Pokémon separately.

The task "Number you've evolved" applies both to evolving from and to that species. For example, evolving a Rowlet into a Dartrix and then into a Decidueye will count twice towards Dartrix's evolution task.

The task "Times you’ve seen it use [move]" requires seeing the move used in battle, whether from a wild Pokémon or a Trainer 's Pokémon, including the player's. Moves that miss do not count.

Eighteen different species have research tasks that are tied to completing a request involving that Pokémon. Before the request is completed, the task count will read "Method unknown". After completing the request, the count will be replaced with a checked off "1".

What are research tasks, the nuances of completing research tasks, submitting reports and raising your star rank, research levels and requests.

Professor Oak wanted young trainers to catch 150 Pokemon and call it a day. Professor Rowan, a real charmer, didn't mind if you simply looked at them. And Professor Juniper, well, she pretty much did what the rest of them did, but at least she was funny.

Everything's gone and changed in Pokemon Legends: Arceus . No one's going to be satisfied with a simple catch, let alone a cozy glance from afar. Research Tasks form one of this game's core gameplay pillars, and without a solid understanding of just much more complex Hisui's Pokedex is, new players will soon find themselves as overwhelmed as the Survey Corps prior to a certain fortuitous fall from the sky.

Legends Arceus Pokemon Pokedex Shinx

Continuing the forced references to past games, think about all the data that suddenly pops into your previous Pokedexes. You catch one Abra, and all of a sudden, its information page is a veritable wellspring of information. There's a trivia bit and plenty more.

This makes sense. After all, most of the time you're not actually the first person to encounter a particular species of Pokemon. Your Pokedex already has some behind-the-scenes scoops on Phantump's disturbing nocturnal activities — it simply won't show up until you've caught one.

In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, you are a true pioneer . Sure, the player character isn't necessarily the very first person to lay eyes on Hisui's fauna, but they aren't far off from it. People are generally afraid of Pokemon here, so your Pokedex is a legitimately blank slate this time around.

That's where Research Tasks come in. First contact with a species of Pokemon adds a page to the book — a real book, mind you, not some gadget — and that page will task you with several assignments related to each and every Pokemon there is.

Research-Tasks-Pokemon-Shinx-List-1

Raising the Research Level for every Pokemon's page is a matter of completing the page's Research Tasks. It's straightforward in theory; but in practice, it can be a challenge.

Take Shinx's Research Tasks page, for example. Catching and battling a specified number of them is time-consuming, but a broad enough request that you won't need to pay a ton of attention while you're doing it. But what about the need to see one use Bite up to 25 times? Waiting for wild Shinx (Shinxes? Shinxi?) to use that attack can be an exercise in frustration, given that enemy Pokemon tend to hit a fair bit harder in this game than past entries.

On the other hand, if you'll be catching and evolving some lovely little lions anyway, and given that they learn Bite at an early level, why not spam it against weak prey until you're finished? The game rewards outside-the-box thinking like this. In this case, it didn't matter that the Shinx performing the attack is yours. The people of Hisui are just that fresh to seeing pretty much anything of the sort.

This hardly scratches the surface of some of Pokemon Legends: Arceus' most obscure Research Tasks. For another early-game example, one of Geodude's Research Tasks involves watching them leap out of ore deposits a set amount of times. The key here is to keep an eye out for rustling ore deposits. No, it's not the game's uneven graphics playing a trick on you. That's a Geodude doing exactly what you need it to do.

Captain Pokemon Legends Arceus Research Task Report

Your primitive Pokedex won't magically reward you for completing Research Tasks. Instead, you must speak with Professor Laventon at the conclusion of survey expeditions . (A survey expedition is a fancy term for every time you venture out into one of Hisui's regions and have some fun for a bit.)

Laventon calculates your achievements if you take a sec to chat him up at camp. These achievements earn you Research Points , which must reach predetermined totals before Laventon shares the good news that you're due for a promotion.

Go let Captain Cyllene know the good news and your Star Rank will rise accordingly. Among other things, your Star Rank dictates how many of Hisui's five main regions you can survey, so it will feel like a "level gate" if you're not proactive throughout your journey.

Pokemon Legends Marli

Every Pokedex page features what is called a Research Level at its bottom-right corner. This ranges from 1 to 10, and the level rises as you fulfill more Research Tasks. There's an interesting — and appreciated — wrinkle in all this. You do not need to complete every Research Task to elevate a page's Research Level to 10 .

This is big news because 10 counts as completing the page. Many of the game's sidequests involve climbing to Research Level 10 . Take Marli, for example. She wants to see an adorable Starly. Who wouldn't? Marli also wants to know a bunch of things about Starly. You can finish Marli's sidequest (known as Requests in Legends: Arceus) by getting Starly's Pokedex page to 10.

Having said this, there are reasons to strive for truly completing each page, as in surpassing the conditions for Research Level 10 and doing absolutely every Research Task. The likelihood of encountering the Shiny version of a Pokemon increases when that Pokemon's page is entirely maxed out. A huge boon for all those Shiny hunters of the world, and still pretty cool even to folks whose goals are not so lofty as to pluck every alternate color scheme pal from the planet.

How to check your research tasks in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Image of Kirsten Carey

There is no shortage of things to do in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In addition to requests from the people of Jubilife Village, there’s absolutely no way you can remember the sheer number of research tasks you have from the Survey Corps, especially when you consider you have numerous tasks per Pokémon species . Fortunately, the game does not expect you to be able to keep track of it all off the top of your head. Mercifully, Game Freak has made it easy to check your research tasks in two distinct ways.

One way to check your tasks is by looking at your Pokédex, where you can look at all your tasks for all the Pokémon species you’ve encountered so far. You can check your Pokédex at any time using the down arrow button. After you open the Pokédex with A, use the A button again to find the research tasks, which are symbolized by a checkmark in the upper lefthand corner. You can scroll through the species you’ve seen and caught with the left joystick and easily view research tasks for each without having to change tabs again.

Additionally, you can also check outstanding research tasks for a Pokémon as you happen to chance upon them in the wild. Use the ZL button and focus on them, then press the down button to open the Pokédex directly to that species’ page. The Pokédex will automatically turn to the research tab. It’s an easy way to assess what you need to do in the moments before catching and/or battle.

How Pokédex research tasks work in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Almost every mainline Pokémon title has had the same main plot of collecting all the gym badges, becoming the league champion, and thwarting some nefarious team or organization along the way. That tried and true formula has been tossed to the wayside for Pokémon Legends: Arceus , which takes us back to the distant past of the Pokémon world where the relationships between wild monsters and trainers were still being figured out. Gyms haven’t been established yet, let alone any organized leagues for battling. Instead, the entire plot of this game is all about studying and researching Pokémon.

What are research tasks?

How to complete research tasks, how research ranks and star ranks work.

The ultimate goal for your trainer in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is to help gather enough data to create the very first Pokédex. This legendary tool has been a part of the Pokémon world since the first game, helping you keep track of all the different monsters you’ve encountered, details on their stats, lore, and anything else you would want to know about them. Because you’re building it for the first time, just encountering a Pokémon won’t automatically fill in the entire Pokédex. You will need to complete research tasks, but this system has a few layers that may not be apparent right away. Here’s a full breakdown of how research tasks work in Pokémon Legends: Arceus so you can make history by completing the very first Pokédex.

A brand new feature to Pokémon Legends: Arceus are research tasks. These are essentially little objectives you need to complete for each Pokémon in the Pokédex to fully complete their entry. Every single Pokémon in the game has its own list of tasks, though many will repeat, such as capturing a certain number of them, observing them using a move a number of times, evolving them, and more. Research tasks can also have multiple levels. This allows you to level up that Pokémon’s research level by repeating a task multiple times. Some research tasks even require you to complete Requests related to that Pokémon.

To view any Pokémon’s research tasks, simply open up your Pokédex and find the Pokémon you want to view the tasks for. Once there, press down on the D-pad to flip to the tab showing the list of tasks, as well as how much progress you’ve made toward completing them. The bottom of the page shows the current research level for that Pokémon. They will all start at 0, and while they can level up higher than 10, 10 is the highest level you need to reach to count their entry in the Pokédex as “complete.”

Most research tasks are self-explanatory, but checking your Pokédex is the best way to get a hint at what you need to do to level up your research levels. Number caught shows up for nearly every Pokémon, and often can be repeated a few times. Use tasks like this that can be done multiple times to help when other tasks are more difficult or random. Since you only have to get them to level 10, not every task needs to be maxed out or completed if you can substitute other ones. Each task can be done up to 5 times for at least 5 research levels.

Also, pay attention to the red arrow icons on the left side of the tasks. If a task has this symbol, completing that task will give you two levels rather than just one. If you see a task like number caught or number defeated with these arrows, then maxing out all 5 of those tasks alone can give you enough research levels to complete that Pokémon’s entry.

A great quality of life feature that Pokémon Legends: Arceus includes is that you don’t need to have caught a Pokémon before it starts tracking your progress on completing their tasks. That means that if, for example, you have yet to catch a Pokémon, but defeated it in battle a few times, gave it food, and seen it use all of its moves, all that will be tracked in the Pokédex. Even if you manage to complete enough research tasks for a Pokémon to technically complete its Pokédex entry, it won’t count as complete and will show as research level 0 until you capture it at least once. Pokémon is about catching them all, right?

Every research task you complete, and thus the more research ranks you go through, will all earn you points towards your Star Rank. You can see your current amount of research points, current Star Rank, and how many more points you need to get to the next rank on the cover of your Pokédex. Your Star Rank is your main way to track your progress through Pokémon Legends: Arceus , with each rank unlocking new items, access to new areas, and the ability to catch higher-level Pokémon. Once you have enough research points to get a new Star Rank, you need to talk to Captain Cyllene in the Galaxy Hall to officially rank up.

There are 10 total Star Ranks you will progress through in the game, and each one has its own rewards, but also will require more total research points to unlock. Here’s a quick breakdown of each Star Rank:

  • First Star: Unlocks Heavy Balls, crafting recipes for Heavy Balls and Revives, and ability to control Pokémon up to level 20.
  • Second Star: Unlocks Feather Balls, crafting recipes for Feather Balls and Super Potions, access to the Crimson Mirelands, and the ability to control Pokémon up to level 30.
  • Third Star: Unlocks Great Balls, crafting recipes for Great Balls, access to the Cobalt Coastlands, and the ability to control Pokémon up to level 40.
  • Fourth Star: Unlocks Leaden Balls, crafting recipes for Leaden Balls and Hyper Potions, access to the Coronet Highlands, and the ability to control Pokémon up to level 50.
  • Fifth Star: Unlocks Wing Balls, crafting recipes for Wing Balls, access to the Alabaster Icelands, and the ability to control Pokémon up to level 65.
  • Sixth Star: Unlocks Ultra Balls, crafting recipes for Ultra Balls and Max Potions, and ability to control Pokémon up to level 80.
  • Seventh Star: Unlocks Gigaton Balls, crafting recipes for Gigaton Balls, and ability to control Pokémon of any level.
  • Eighth Star: Unlocks Jet Balls, crafting recipes for Jet Balls and Full Restores.
  • Ninth Star: Unlocks 10 Rare Candies and 20 Grit Pebbles.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you might encounter the Gloom-Borne Illness quest, which requires you to find Wild Greens. However, there isn't actually an item called "Wild Greens," making this quest particularly tricky to complete. In this guide, we'll show you where to find Wild Greens in Tears of the Kingdom. Where to find Wild Greens

The most important thing to note with this quest is the item you need is actually the Sundelion. The game is purposely vague, making it difficult to know what the actual item you need is. These items are found in various locations around Hyrule, but the most consistent way to find them is to visit a Sky Island around the following coordinates: -2,184, 0966, 1637.

For as open and freeform as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is, even allowing you to skip essentially every quest in the game and go straight to the final boss, you will be missing a ton by doing so. At the very least, most players will want to complete all the main quests before marching into the final encounter, which will take many hours. One quest is taking some adventurers a long time to complete, not due to its difficulty, but because they have no idea how to complete it.

The Fifth Sage quest is one of the most enigmatic in the entire game in what you're supposed to do to complete it. You're only given a single clue, and it's not a very helpful one at that.

Research Tasks in Pokémon Legends: Arceus explained

To complete a Pokédex entry in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you need to complete enough Research Tasks for that Pokémon species until you've reached Research Level 10.

how to see research tasks pokemon arceus

Each Pokémon has a dedicated Research Task list and these tasks can be anything from how many you've caught, witnessing specific moves in battle or evolving it. Certain Pokémon also have Research Tasks tied to Requests , such as investigating whether Drifloon truly plays with children.

Some Research Tasks have multiple stages, which allow you to increase an entry's Research Level by repeating the same activity. A common example of this is the 'Number Caught' task that, for some Pokémon, can increase its Research Level at least five times.

You can check a Pokémon's Research Tasks by visiting their page in your Pokédex and pressing Down. This brings up a list of all their associated tasks and your progress with them. A Pokémon's Research Tasks can also be accessed by focusing on it in the wild and pressing Down.

Your current Research Level for this Pokémon can also be found at the bottom of their entry.

During the Pokédex Progress Report at the end of every survey, you'll review which Pokédex entries you've updated or finished, along with how many Research Tasks you've completed.

Our Pokémon Legends Arceus walkthrough will help you pick a starter Pokémon and win the Kleavor boss fight . You’re also tasked with filling the Hisui Pokédex by obtaining new evolutions like Kleavor by evolving Scyther , Wyrdeer by evolving Stantler , Sneasler by evolving Hisui Sneasel and Overquil by evolving Hisui Qwilfish . There’s a host of new evolution methods , including ones for the Eevee evolutions . Take the time to complete Requests too, such as The Sea’s Legend , Wurmple’s Evolved! and finding the Wisp locations . Don’t forget to track down every Unown location too.

How to earn Pokémon Research Points in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Research Points are earned by completing both Research Tasks and full Pokédex entries in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In turn, these points are used to increase your Star Rank within the Galaxy Expedition Team.

Your Pokémon Research Points are tallied during your Pokédex Progress Review, which occurs when you finish a survey out in the wild. Here you'll learn how many points you've earned during the survey and how close you are to reaching the next Star Rank.

The front of your Pokédex also tracks how many Pokémon Research Points you've earned so far and includes a progress bar for your next Star Rank.

  • Getting to Work on Research Tasks

Professor Laventon asks for you to help him with research tasks in Obsidian Fieldlands.

Go to Fieldlands Camp

Follow rei or akari, report to professor laventon, report to cyllene.

Go to the east exit of Jubilife Village and choose the Fieldlands Camp as your destination. There will be a cutscene where you learn about checking a wild pokémon's research tasks, and how to dodge. You can check the Survey Tips in the Settings section of your satchel to review this information.

Go to the guidance marker (you can open the map and press Y to change which mission or request has guidance enabled) to find Rei or Akari. They will tell you to use ZL to focus on a wild pokémon, then press down to open the pokédex to that pokémon's entry, so you can review the research tasks. This also adds that pokémon to the Pokédex, so you can have some of its information even if you don't catch it. Be sure to do this with every pokémon you encounter outside of battle.

As you go through the area, keep an eye out for plants that you can gather, and trees that you can throw your partner pokémon at to gather things like Apricorns and Oran Berries.

There are three Bidoofs in the area. You can catch them or defeat them to complete some of your research tasks.

When you are ready to move on, go to the guidance marker to find Rei or Akari. There will be another cutscene, where they remind you to check your research tasks and try to catch a Starly without being seen. After you are done catching Starly, go to the guidance marker and there will be another cutscene.

Next, you are asked to catch a Buizel. You will need to battle it first, so be sure to throw a partner pokémon instead of a Poké Ball.

When you are ready, go to the guidance marker for another cutscene with Rei or Akari. You will get a Crafting Kit. You can use it to craft things wherever you are, but you will only be able to use the materials in your satchel. You will also get the recipe for crafting Potions. To use the Crafting Kit, look in the Key Items section of your Satchel (press R to switch between Everyday Items and Key Items).

Feel free to explore the area and catch or battle more pokémon. When you are ready, go to the guidance marker to return to Professor Laventon and report the research tasks that you have completed.

You will receive money whenever you submit survey reports, with a bonus for completing certain research tasks.

You can also rank up in the Galaxy Expedition Team after accumulating a certain number of Pokémon research points.

If you haven't gotten enough points to rank up yet, the Professor will recommend which pokémon's research tasks you should focus on. You'll need to rank up to complete this mission.

Once you have enough points to rank up, talk to Professor Laventon and you will automatically return to the village. Go into the Galaxy Team building and talk to Cyllene, then exit the Pokédex to continue. You will get the rank of First Star. This unlocks the use of the Heavy Ball, and pokémon up to level 20 will obey you in battle. You will also earn more money for research reports. Cyllene will give you recipes for the Heavy Ball, and Revives.

After a cutscene, Rei or Akari will ask you to battle them at the Training Grounds. This begins the mission A Request from Mai .

How Doom: The Dark Ages' Combat Differs From Past Games

Civilization 7 confirms important multiplayer feature, how to reach and beat the mad tiger boss in black myth: wukong, quick links, cherrim's research tasks, strong style moves with spiritomb, catching pokemon with multiple forms (rotom), catching all 28 unown, feed snorlax 50 times, see magikarp use splash 100 times, space-time distortion pokemon, completing a pokemon's entry vs. completing all research tasks.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus does away with the old Pokedex formula by requiring trainers to complete a list of tasks just to unlock a Pokemon's Pokedex entry. When players catch a wild Pokemon, it does not automatically fill out their entry like in previous Pokemon games such as Sword & Shield . By going into Pokemon Legends: Arceus ' Pokedex, players can view Research Tasks for each species by tapping the A button.

A Pokemon's entry will unlock once its Research Level reaches 10. There are usually various Tasks per Pokemon, such as "Number caught" and "Times you've seen it use [move]," and these all add "experience" to a trainer's Research Level.

Common Pokemon such as Bidoof have simple Tasks that can be completed in one sitting, while a Pokemon like Spiritomb will take longer due to their limited in-game availability. It's not required to max out every Research Task, but if players are going for 100% completion, they'll have some work to do. The following are just a few Research Tasks that may give players some trouble.

pokemon-legends-arceus-update-catch-cherrim

Players will first hear of Cherrim in Pokemon Legends: Arceus when they go to accept the request "To Bloom or Not to Bloom" at the Fields in Jubilife Village. I

t's quickly revealed that Cherrim is one of the toughest Pokemon to find - at least in the beginning. According to Cherrim's Pokedex, it can be found in shaking trees within The Heartwood during morning and daytime, but players also have a chance of getting its pre-evolved form, Cherubi, instead.

Cherrim has the following Research Tasks:

  • Number caught (15 total)
  • Number caught during daylight hours (10 total)
  • Number defeated (5 total)
  • Times you've seen it use Petal Dance (40 total)
  • Times you've seen it us an agile style move (15 total)
  • Number you've seen leap out of tress (15 total)

To complete the Cherrim Request , players only need to get Cherrim's Research level to 10 and unlock its entry. Getting a Perfect entry is the hard part.

Cherrim's appearance rate isn't too high in Obsidian Fieldlands, but it will start appearing more in Coronet Highlands (Fabled Spring) and Crimson Mirelands (southwest of Gapejaw Bog; the tree by the lake).

Look for shaking trees during the day and keep trying until Research Task 2 and Task 6 are completed. This way, it'll be easier to knock out three of its hardest Research Tasks at once.

If Cherrim isn't appearing, return to Jubilife Village and respawn in whichever region has Cherrim.

pokemon-legends-arceus-spiritomb-1

Spiritomb is tricky because it's locked behind the Request "Eerie Apparitions in the Night." This involves finding all 107 wisps scattered around Hisui before Spiritomb starts "spawning" in the Crimson Mirelands near the Shrouded Ruins at night.

Once Spiritomb has been caught, his Research Tasks are quite easy to fill out since they're based around seeing it use specific Moves 40 times.

The most tedious Spiritomb Research Task is "See it use strong style move," with the highest objective at 70. Using a strong or agile style move will cost 2PP instead of 1PP.

The best way to complete this Research Task is to have Spiritomb battle lower-leveled Pokemon and defeat them with strong style moves.

Keep plenty of Max Ethers and Max Elixirs on hand to restore Spiritomb's moves without having to rush back to a camp.

This strategy also applies to Pokemon with similar Research Tasks. For example, one of Lucario's Research Tasks requires seeing it use Aura Sphere 70 times in battle.

pokemon legends arceus rotom forms

Since the fourth generation of Pokemon, some species have been given physical differences depending on their gender. Any Pokemon that looks different as a male or female will have a Research Task called "Number of different forms you've obtained."

Pokemon with a 50/50 gender ratio like Pikachu means this Research Task can be completed very quickly. Others with uneven gender ratios (such as Eevee) may take some time due to their rarity.

In addition, there are Pokemon with different forms such as Rotom and the Forces of Nature (Landorus, Thundurus, Tornadus, and Enamorus). Rotom's in particular is not only time-consuming but can be expensive.

Rotom has six objectives for its "different forms" Research Task. Unfortunately, the only way to get the appliances that change Rotom's form is by buying them from the Ginter of the Ginkgo Guild.

Rotom's appliances are randomized daily and get more expensive with each purchase. The final appliance will cost as much as 100,000. The best way to get Rotom's forms is by saving up on money and crafting items instead of buying them at Jubilife Village's item shop.

Additionally, space-time distortions can drop Star Shards and Comet Shards, which can be sold for a lot of money at a general store.

RELATED: Pokemon Legends: Arceus - How to Catch the Flying Gyarados

An A-shaped Unown in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Players will quickly notice that Unown does not have more than one Research Task. By catching all 28 forms of Unown, its Pokedex entry will be unlocked, and it will be marked with Perfect.

There are other bonuses with finding all Unown such as being able to catch them at Solaceon Ruins and potentially shiny hunt them.

Catching Unown is easy since their catch rate has been changed to 100% for Legends: Arceus . Finding them is the difficult part. The hints in the Unown Research Notes are all written in Unown alphabet, and some hints aren't very specific. Unfortunately, players are going to have to search every corner of Hisui if they want this Pokemon's entry completed.

Alpha Snorlax.

This Research Task would be almost silly if it weren't for such a high objective marker. There's an Alpha Snorlax in the Obisidian Fieldlands that can be distracted with all types of food. However, given the abundance of Oran Berry trees in the Fieldlands, the best strategy is to throw Oran Berries until Snorlax has eaten 50 of them just to complete this Research Task.

Remember when feeding wild Pokemon to wait for it to finish eating before tossing another Berry/Food item. Bait will perish if it remains untouched for too long. Although players can find regular-sized Snorlax in space-time distortions , it's better to just feed the Alpha Snorlax since it's very easy to be ganged up on by other Pokemon in space-time distortions.

Pokemon Snap Magikarp

Magikarp is well-known for being a useless Pokemon that evolves into the much stronger Gyarados at level 20. As ridiculous as Snorlax's Research Task may be, Magikarp takes it up a notch by needing to be seen using the move Splash 100 times.

Fortunately, Magikarp doesn't have any damage dealing moves, so the chance of it using another move is impossible until it runs out of PP. However, watching Magikarp flop around uselessly is a boring Research Task despite its simplicity.

The best strategy is to swim out to the Magikarp in the river between Grueling Grove and Horseshoe Plains in the Obsidian Fieldlands. There should be several Magikarp to battle. After throwing a Pokemon at it, use a move that deals no damage (such as Swords Dance) to stall until Magikarp burns through its Splash move. Then, defeat it and move on to the next Magikarp.

Alternatively, players can always catch a Magikarp themselves and have it battle another Magikarp. Neither side will be dealing any damage, but at least the Splash objective will go up a little quicker.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Space-Time Distortions

Some Pokemon that aren't native to Hisui will appear in space-time distortions. To trigger a space-time distortion, players just need to be in one region for more than five minutes. When a distortion appears, there will be a notification at the top of the screen and a space-time distortion icon on the map.

Pokemon such as Porygon and Cranidos will only appear in distortions , and unfortunately, their Research Tasks require catching more than one. These Pokemon have Research Tasks that require trainers to catch 3 and 5 large specimens, respectively. There's no strategy to make larger-sized Pokemon appear, so it's a matter of trial and error when dealing with space-time distortion exclusive Pokemon.

RELATED: Pokemon Legends: Arceus - The 5 Best Water-Type Pokemon (& Where to Find Them)

pokemon legends arceus eevee

When a player has completed enough Research Tasks, their Research Level will continue to climb. At 10, they'll be able to view their entry. Completing all Pokemon's entries in the Pokedex is the only way to get the Shiny Charm in Pokemon Legends: Arceus .

However, if players go out of their way to get a Perfect Entry, then the chances of encountering a Shiny Pokemon of that particular Pokemon increase.

Combine this with the Shiny Charm, and it could make shiny hunting very easy. Shiny Pokemon tend to crop up more in mass outbreaks , so if there's a Pokemon that players really want, it's recommended to complete all of its Research Tasks first.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is available now on Nintendo Switch.

Pokemon Legends Arceus: Benefit to completing all research for a single Pokemon?

As the title says, does anyone know if there is any benefit to completing all of the research tasks for a single Pokemon? Obviously, getting to 10 is important, but I think that usually only requires 8 research tasks. After that, the level, thus far, has stayed on 10 even if I've completed many more.

All Triumph Together Exclusive Field Research Tasks in Pokémon Go

Image of Adam Newell

Pokémon Go’s Triumph Together event is drawing to a close on Aug. 31, which gives us three days to take advantage of some exclusive Field Research tasks that spawn a bunch of the season’s most popular Pokémon.

The end-of-season tasks can be found by spinning any Pokéstop. Some have a chance to spawn unique Pokémon like Tandemaus, which are usually only available in Party Play. Be sure to make the most of the list below while you can.

Pokémon Go Triumph Together Field Research Tasks and Rewards

Goomy Encounter
Explore 1km Tirtouga Encounter
Archen Encounter
Power up Pokémon 5 times Ducklett Encounter
Emolga Encounter
Crabrawler Encounter

Four main quests are on offer in Pokémon Go until Aug. 31, with most rewards being random. When looking out for these specific Field Research Tasks at Pokéstops, ensure they have the event banner in the bottom right corner to know if you’ll get one of these rare spawns.

All of these Pokémon, apart from Tandemaus, have a slim chance of being shiny, too , so long as the odds are in your favor. There are no boosted odds here, so if you find a shiny by some miracle, you’ll end the season on a high.

If you took part in Pokémon G o Fest this year or made the most of the season, there might not be anything unique on the list for you to go out of your way to get. I’d say most of the 7km Egg Spawns are far better rewards than the slim Field Research offerings, as at least in the Eggs, you get costumed Slakoth and a bunch of other seasonal goodies that were only around for a few days.

10 Best Switch RPGs You Should Play

how to see research tasks pokemon arceus

Though Nintendo’s handhelds have no shortage of quality RPGs, the same can’t be said about their home consoles. While there have been some real gems over the decades, the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Wii were all lacking in this department. That all changed, of course, when Nintendo’s handheld and home console output combined into one with the Switch, giving players the most variety and choice in RPGs in Nintendo history. Here’s our list of ten RPG must-plays every Switch owner should check out first.

10. Triangle Strategy

Triangle Strategy has a slow burn introduction, but stick with it, and you’ll find yourself a challenging strategy RPG gem with a grounded yet incredibly enthralling story about resource wars, religious persecution and racism, and the many difficult decisions a leader must face during wartime.

Though Triangle Strategy’s gameplay will be familiar to fans of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, it features twists of its own to stand out from the crowd. Rather than MP or breakable weapons, characters’ skills rely on Tactical Points, which slowly recharge each turn. Things like the environment and the position a unit is facing is also key to victory, as characters can do things like strike from behind for more damage and use elemental magic to alter the battlefield.

But what happens outside of combat is equally important — during exploration and cutscenes, the actions and dialogue choices taken by protagonist Serenoa affect three stats called Utility, Liberty, and Morality. These come into play when his army faces a difficult decision; these moments all come down to a vote, and Serenoa can influence party members’ decisions in his favor by making the correct arguments and having a strong enough conviction in each category. These decisions take the story in wildly different directions, adding a lot of replayability to one of the Switch’s most overlooked gems — let’s be honest, it’s probably the name.

9. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

After the Paper Mario series entered an incredibly divisive era with the release of Sticker Star on the 3DS, a return to form seemed like a pipe dream, much less a remake of the series’s most beloved entry. But it happened, and the Switch was graced with a gorgeous visual uplift for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

This release, while faithful to the original, remakes the visuals from the ground up, with an art style reminiscent of modern entries. And while it implements a variety of quality of life features, like a streamlined fast travel system and faster partner switching, The Thousand Year Door at its core has aged incredibly well, with a battle system that feels snappy and streamlined to this day.

The story sees Mario and some new allies travel the world for the Crystal Stars to unlock the titular door, while fending off the threat of an organization called the X-Nauts. It strikes a good balance between humor and a darker, more serious tone, avoiding later games’ overreliance on paper-related gags and gimmicks to move its story and combat forward.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was a classic in 2004, and it’s still a classic now in 2024 — one that’s a must play for those looking to appreciate Mario’s history in the RPG genre. But best of all: it’s killed off this ridiculous pricing in one fell swoop.

8. Pokémon Legends: Arceus

In spite of the rough and lackluster visuals (which are still miles better than Scarlet & Violet), Pokémon Legends: Arceus manages to be the best game the series has seen in over a decade, with some of Game Freak’s boldest innovations for the franchise.

In place of the usual structure, Legends is an open-world adventure that has players braving the wilds of Hisui — Sinnoh in the distant past — to research and catch its Pokémon. But these wild creatures won’t just hop out and then politely wait for you to send out your own Pokémon — they’re liable to attack you on sight, and there’s a real risk of getting injured and knocked out. The use of things like crafted tools and Pokéballs — and even stealth — are necessary to survive in this dangerous new world.

The overhauled combat features an order of upcoming turns in a list, and the moves you use — and the styles with which you use them — can influence that turn order. Combined with the removal of held items and abilities and seamless transitions into and out of battle, it makes for a fast paced and satisfying combat system that’s honestly the kind of  change this series has been craving.

Pokémon Legends, despite the wonky performance and graphics, is an absolute treat to play, and a welcome breath of fresh air for the series. We can only hope that the upcoming Pokémon Legends Z-A can match what Arceus achieved while improving on the technical aspects.

7. The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure

Falcom’s Trails series has been slowly gaining recognition over the past decade, and rightfully so. These games are absolute gems, featuring a massive, sprawling story spread over more than a dozen games. And beyond the many amazing characters you’ll meet and the twists and turns they’ll endure, Trails is a masterclass in worldbuilding, with a level of attention to detail that puts even AAA games to shame.

Among the four story arcs released, the Crossbell arc is often regarded as the best in the series. Set in the titular autonomous state, Trails from Zero and its sequel Trails to Azure star a special police squad who have the unenviable task of helping repair the force’s reputation by aiding citizens with requests, on top of their usual work dealing with Crossbell City’s notorious criminal underworld.

Azure ups the stakes by putting a larger focus on international politics and ancient conspiracies. It’s an emotional peak that delves into themes like how far people are willing to go to save their country, and whether it’s a price worth paying for humanity at large.

Like the rest of the series, the game also features fantastic turn-based combat and an incredible soundtrack. But also like the rest of the series, it’s the storytelling that keeps fans coming back; this arc in particular inspired a level of passion that brings to mind the games’ themes of overcoming barriers, as a fan translation became the basis of the official English localization .

6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem’s popularity has absolutely surged in the decade since Awakening revitalized the series, with Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem Echoes going on to sell over a million each. It should be no surprise, then, that the series’s debut on Switch made an even bigger splash, drawing in tons of new fans.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses has players take the role of a mercenary-turned-professor tasked with teaching one of three potential classes in the art of war. Each of the three houses — the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, and Golden Deer — feature different students, and ultimately branch out into different storylines. Refreshingly, compared to the likes of Awakening and Fates, there’s a much bigger emphasis on worldbuilding and political intrigue — it’s a far more grounded war story than past Fire Emblem games, and the fantastic character development on some routes only serves to make it all even better.

Three Houses augments traditional Fire Emblem strategy gameplay with elements that fans of Persona might find familiar, with time management mechanics that have players planning out lectures and activities to improve students’ abilities. Even the series staple support conversations are recontextualized under this system, making them a tad reminiscent of Social Links.

Though this entry in the series is a bit lacking in the graphical department, especially in interior locations.  everything else came together to produce something widely beloved, especially compared to the more divisive follow-up, Fire Emblem Engage. It’s still a good game, but does feel like a spin-off compared to this already classic Switch RPG.

5. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI S, like its predecessors, is a traditional JRPG that tells the story of a chosen hero rising to fight against evil. It’s a tale as old as Mario beating Bowser to death with a lead pipe, but this series has proven time and time again it’s not about the road you walk, but how you walk down it. In an era where everyone is pressured to add some big twist to their games, Dragon Quest XI remains confident in evoking the style of the classics, yet also pulling ahead of the competition due to sheer polish.

The late Akira Toriyama’s art style has always lent itself well to vibrant and colorful games, and Dragon Quest XI’s rendition brings to life the old school medieval fantasy that’s sure to evoke nostalgia in its players. Its cast of characters are also some of the series’s best — they may all be following the Luminary because it’s their destiny to fight alongside him, but it doesn’t stop them from all feeling like true companions, each of which have their own wants, needs, and worries.

With fantastic presentation, amazing voice acting, a smoother difficulty curve for beginners (and a hard mode for veterans), and numerous quality-of-life improvements, Dragon Quest XI S is truly the best place for newcomers to start the series — and it certainly helps that this definitive re-release adds a heap of new content, including the ability to play the entire game in a 2D mode reminiscent of SNES RPGs.

4. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Atlus has become rather infamous for continuing to use an updated re-release model even in the era of DLC expansions — first, they’ll release a new game, and then a few years down the line, follow it up with a new version that adds new quality-of-life features and a ton of new content. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, however, is one of the few such re-releases that justifies this model with just how much it changes.

The original Shin Megami Tensei V was hailed as a fantastic post-apocalyptic turn-based RPG, filled with the challenge you would expect from the series. By that we mean it will try to beat you to death with a lead pipe. Its story, however, left a lot to be desired, with it feeling very rushed and underdeveloped.

Vengeance remedies this issue in an unusual way: by adding a completely new and separate campaign called the Canon of Vengeance. This path adds new major characters and greatly fleshes out existing ones, making for a much more satisfying experience. The Canon of Vengeance also almost completely diverges from the original plot (now rebranded as the Canon of Creation), as the new characters make unforeseen impacts on the story’s events.

This re-release also makes a massive amount of tweaks and changes to streamline the experience, such as being able to save anywhere. It elevates Shin Megami Tensei V from being a “good” RPG to one of the Switch’s best — and a must-play for Atlus fans and newcomers alike.

3. Octopath Traveler II

The original Octopath Traveler was an admirable attempt to meld classic RPG designs and styles with modern sensibilities. It featured gorgeous visuals, a satisfying turn-based combat system, customization with job classes, and a surprising amount of non-linear freedom. Where it failed, however, was in tying everything together narratively.

Octopath featured eight playable characters, of whom you picked one to start with, after which you’d go around recruiting the others and experiencing everyone’s stories. These eight travelers, however, never actually interact with each other during their respective storylines, as their interactions are saved for unvoiced Travel Banter scenes that can easily be missed. What’s more, the true final boss was hidden behind obscure side quests, and the lore revelations lacked any sense of emotional impact.

Octopath Traveler II, then, was everything that a sequel to that game needed to be. It addressed virtually all of the major flaws in those systems and storytelling structure. Travel Banter can no longer be permanently missed and occurs more frequently, and Crossed Paths chapters give the cast chances to actually interact on screen. Combined with better stories all-around and a much improved finale, this second outing is a polished experience that finally manages to reach true greatness.

And because Octopath Traveler II is set in a new continent with a new cast and set of stories, it’s the perfect place for newcomers to jump in and see the hype behind Square Enix’s line of HD-2D RPGs.

2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Following the success of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, Monolith Soft spent the next decade refining and expanding their craft — Xenoblade Chronicles X’s open-world pushed the Wii U to its limits, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 built itself on the original game’s story-focused structure, while adding a hefty amount of customization and strategy.

All of these prior entries were gems in their own right, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the culmination of Monolith Soft’s achievements and lessons learned so far. A more cohesive, polished art style and technical improvements make it one of the best looking games on Switch, while numerous quality-of-life enhancements address many of the series’ long standing issues.

The headlining acts, of course, are the massive and gorgeous open world, one of the best combat systems of the genre, and an incredible, emotional story that dives much deeper into philosophical territory than past entries. Even the side quests are some of the best in the series, and it’s all brought to life with absolutely stellar voice direction.

As far as Switch-exclusive RPGs go, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a crowning jewel — one that will also give you incredible bang for your buck, with over 200 hours’ worth of content, and that’s not even getting into the equally incredible DLC expansion Future Redeemed.

1. Persona 5 Royal

Fans had been begging for years for a Switch port of one of the greatest modern JRPGs of all time, which only intensified when Joker officially joined the playable roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Those dreams finally came true in 2022, when Atlus unleashed their stylish masterpiece for every modern platform to enjoy.

Like all of Atlus’s other updated re-releases, Persona 5 Royal adds lots of new quality-of-life features to streamline the experience, as well as new content in the form of new (and reworked) Confidants and an extra Palace in the third semester. Existing Palaces have also been reworked, with altered puzzles and additions to help navigation and make party SP management easier.

While these changes do make the overall game noticeably easier than the original, Persona 5 Royal is still effortlessly stylish, with a thrilling storyline that will hook many players struggling with modern societal issues. The new story arc in the third semester also forms a new emotional climax, and makes for a far better finale than the original ending.

To top it all off, not only does the game look and run great on Switch, but all DLC released for the PS4 version of Royal is included here for free. This is one of the best JRPGs of the generation, and should be your next stop if you have even the slightest interest in the genre. It’s the best Switch RPG there is, and we’re more than ready for Persona 6 on the Switch 2. Or 3. Or whenever it’s ready.
