My name is pen and I am item of daily use for everybody and sundry. You can find me in the bags, offices and every imaginable place for the students. It’s too common to be thinking about the pen. I agree that I am too cheap and common to make any difference, but acquaintances.

People of every country use me today. People can write on paper according to their requirements, with my help. If I had not been there, nobody in the world would have read and written, nor would there would be the light of knowledge.

Children who are the future of the country start their studies with me and learn to write only with the help of mine. It gives me a kind of happiness that I am helping to make someone’s future.

Not only kids but also journalists use me to write the news. Journalists write their news by using me, and the same news appears in the newspaper the next day. Because of this news, awareness remains within society, and society gets to know about the changes that are taking place around them. I am pleased that I am working to make society aware of this as well.

Other than these two uses of mine, according to their needs people of all ages use me. Everybody uses me whether they are old or a child. Everyone keeps me in his or her pocket, so I do not get lost here and there.

Every day of your life, you use a pen. You think of me and seek me every time you want to remember something important. I have become an integral part of your everyday life; you carry me everywhere, just in case you need to take note of it.

I see many of my newer brothers thrown out after the source of their lives has run out. But I am one exception. Unlike them, my source of life can be replenished and used again. It is a loop without end. I saw a lot of things in my life, studied the ocean, wrote hundreds of poems and stories, and saw many people walking by. I remember all of them, but I’m still here on this desk, watching.

History of pen

It is a long story. I used to be made of wood in ancient times and dipped myself in tar to write on paper. Yet times have changed, and my most recent form today is a ball pen. The journey from a piece of wood to a ball pen is not as short as you can understand, I had to go through a lot of development for this, and after that, I was able to reach my most existing form today.

Initiation of mine

The first thing I remember was the factory assembly line. People used to bring parts of me together by hand. They put a protective casing around my sensitive cage of ink. People then added an intricately carved nib point, where the ink flowed through. I knew I was placed in a padded case with foam and moved on.

I remember traveling hours in a transport vehicle’s back. I could hear other peoples and nearby surroundings, but I couldn’t speak because I had enough sources of life scarcely to sustain ourselves. The car stopped after hours and hours of traveling, and there was shock all around me. I could hear one by one my brothers were being taken.

Then, it was my opportunity. They put me along with my brothers again after a lot of moving time. After a couple of minutes, we felt elevated. It was only after I heard about moving people that I knew we were on an airplane. We’ve been even less time in the sun. It is easier to fly by air. We were then unloaded and taken to stores.

The shop I got into was enormous. It was well maintained, with rows to sell fancy items. I was placed on my case, in a glass display. I was a different type, a more expensive customized piece. So I mostly watched people take my brother’s home.

They would be interested in me and my design, but they would still be driven away by the price. But since I was genuinely proud of my appearance, it didn’t matter. I felt special. Then came my day. In the shop came a wealthy merchant, who saw me and he had to have me. He brought me home, proud to own me.

Life as a ‘Pen’

Wealthy mechant would initially refuse to use me to document, fearing that he would ruin my intricate carvings and smooth edges. He didn’t know that the longer he waited, the more depleted my life essence became. I grew weaker every day.

I knew everything about records, the everyday things happening all around me, and the world, before long. The merchant never forgot to take me, and never forgot to replenish my source of life.

Throughout my life, I met many of my kind, but nobody stayed for a long time. They had started making cheaper pens, which I would still feel broken after a single-use, seeing those poor souls waiting for their fate, not being able to do anything to save them. Cruel, isn’t it? Since birth to be branded expendable.

Everything I thought I survived even my master, the merchant, his friend, his grandkids, and more. Now I am talking to you, you who inherited me.

My ink is multi-colored. But I’m used more in the blue, black and red inks. A blue ink pen is considered best for writing something while the teacher uses a red ink pen to write, and the title is written by a black ink pen.

Use me wisely, young man, for I have wisdom beyond your understanding. I have presently and experience. I am also sure that I will mold your future, your life ahead of you. I hope you will understand the obligation that you have been granted.

You can shift your future and make the future of this world whether better or worse? That is your preference, as I am obliged to make your offer. However, I hope you will do the world well, just like your ancestors.

Then we were unloaded and taken to shops.

The shop that I got into was huge. It was well lit and maintained, with rows of fancy products for sale. I was placed in a glass display, on my case. Apparently I was a different type, a customised more expensive piece. So I mostly saw people taking home my brothers

They’d be interested in me, and my design, but the price would always drive them away. But it didn’t matters since I was really proud of my appearance, I felt special. Then my day came. A wealthy merchant came in the shop, saw me and he had to have me. He took me home, proud to own me.

Life being a pen

At first he would refuse to use me to write, fearing he might ruin my intricate carvings and smooth edges. Little did he know that the longer he waited, the more my life essence was getting depleted? I grew weaker day by day.

Then one day he gathered enough courage to dip my inner in Ink, my life source. I felt a surge of life go through me. I was alive finally, the way I was made to be. That day onwards, he used me for everything, writing everything down, just to show me off. I am learning every day.

Before long, I knew everything about Accounts, the daily events occurring all around me, and the world. The merchant never forgot to take me, never forgot to refill my life source.

I met many of my kind throughout my life, but no one stayed for long. Apparently they had started making cheaper pens, which could be thrown after a single use I would always feel broken, seeing those sad souls waiting for their fate, not being able to do anything to save them. Isn’t it cruel? To be labelled as expendable since birth.

The present

I’ve outlived everyone I’ve known. Even my master, the merchant, his son, his grandchildren and further more. Now I’m speaking to you, you, who have inherited me.

I am a pen. A fountain ink pen. Something so insignificant that you don’t waste even one minute of your life thinking about me. But here I am, telling you my story. The pen that has been used to write different tales of so many people has finally got a chance to inscribe his own. I remember the day I came into existence. It was quite a long time ago. I took birth in a place you humans call a factory. All of my parts were inserted one by one through the hands of factory workers.

I remember moving at a fast pace on a conveyor belt. The workmen were handling me with care, and I was growing in size as well as beauty with each additional touch. I have a matte black and steel grey body along with a golden nib. If there had been beauty pageants for pens, I think I would have been a strong contender for sure. After I and my fellow fountain ink pens were ready, we were put into a transparent case. We were then put into a cardboard box in a batch of 100 pens.

The travel was extremely long and tiring. We started out in the back of a truck and soon found ourselves flying in the mighty sky in an aeroplane. We were then unloaded into a truck again and finally reached our destination after around 10 hours. We were ordered by a shop owner in the city of Mumbai. His shop was in Bandra where I’m told that a lot of famous people live.

My friends and I were kept in a glass cupboard. The owner’s servant used to clean the cabinet and dust us daily. Customers were never allowed to touch us without the assistance of the shop owner. I often wondered why we fountain ink pens got so much attention and special treatment. Why weren’t we treated the same way as other ballpoint pens or gel pens? People would come to the shop and buy other pens.

Some would come and look at us but never take us home with them. I thought that maybe there was some major problem with me. Perhaps I wasn’t handy or convenient. Maybe I was not stylish looking after all. Feelings of self-pity and dejection started taking over my friends and me. But we soon learnt the truth. One fine morning, just like every other day, the owner’s servant was cleaning the cupboard and dusting one of my friends when suddenly the ink pen slipped from his hand and landed straight on the hard marble floor.

The nib of the pen was completely destroyed. I felt sad and unhappy, looking at the incident, but I knew that the servant did it by mistake. As soon as this happened, the shop owner rushed towards the servant and gave him a good scolding. He told him that the pen that he had broken was very costly and that he would not get his salary for three months. After hearing the shop owner’s words, I felt sad for the 14-year old, but my self-esteem had also risen back.

The reason why people were not purchasing me, and my friends was not because we had some or the other flaw, but because we were quite expensive. After that day, the servant was not allowed to come near us, and the shop owner himself did the dusting work. After a wait of more than a year, I was finally picked up by a well-known writer and was taken to his home. He put me with many other of his pens. It seemed like he had a collection.

But as with other things, the formality slowly died down. After all, familiarity breeds comfort does it not. So then gradually, I started to be treated as an everyday object.

The importance and care that was given to me at an earlier time, now almost seemed like an act, full of falsehoods and betrayals.

But I did not think much about it. I was to be used as a tool for writing and for that, I was at her disposal. Every morning I was packed into her pencil box and I would travel into her school for months.

She would take me out of the box at the start of every class to take down notes with the help of my smooth nib and put me back inside after she was done with plastering her notes every session.

Then again I would stay inside the dark box for the lunch hour and I would only get to view the outside world when the next lecture class came by.

Then something monumental happened one particular day. As usual, I was lying around the house. So she came searching for me and picked me up from the coffee table where she had found me.

I was carried to her room and placed inside her dark pencil box which was again placed into her school bag. Then after what seemed like ages, I felt the pencil box being carried out and then the box was opened.

A bright light came flooding in and I was taken out and placed onto a wooden school desk. The room was filled with clamor and loud noises until the teacher walked in.

Suddenly, the air became so silent you could hear a pin drop. Then the class started. As the lecture proceeded, the number of notes written with my smooth flowing ink increased.

I glided on and on ahead along with gritty white-ruled notebooks and printed textbooks, highlighting points and underlining important statements and scribbling important definitions along the borders of the text and corners of the book.

This went on till the bell rang for our lunch break. I was once again placed inside the pencil box and shoved into the bag before she hurried out with her lunch box to a world of freedom and bliss I suppose. While I stayed quietly minding my own business inside the bag, I suddenly felt something happening out of routine.

The bag seemed to be picked off the floor and placed on a table while the zip was opened. Then a hand swam in searching for the pencil box. After evading a mix of old assignments, empty chocolate wrappers, and files, it finally caught a hold of the pencil box. And then, the box was open.

Imagine my confusion and surprise as I looked at an unknown girl, a complete stranger, smile gleefully at me and pick me up. She quickly shoved me into her skirt pocket while I swished around in the darkness of the material wondering what in the world was happening. Afterward, forgoing a long time of being swished around, the girl finally came to a stop as the bell rang and she came and sat on the school bench.

As the lectures went on, she never took me out of her pocket and that left me wondering what I was doing in this entire situation. Then towards the end of class, she deftly slipped me into her pencil box and went off to her home. I never for once was taken out of her pencil box.

After what felt like ages, the box was opened and then again, the similar feel of white light and loud voices and noises came crashing in. But this time, I was grabbed by another pair of hands. As I looked up I realized I was back to my owner! At last, I had been rescued from this lack of luster voyage to nowhere.

Then after a few days, I got to know what the entire situation was as the girl narrated the story to her elders. That one fateful day, after she had gone to play outside with her friends, one mean girl who was jealous of her Parker pen, which is me, went berserk and stole me out of her bag.

She then proceeded to keep me with her while my owner cried and begged everyone to search high and low for me as I was apparently a very special pen for her. That warmed my heart.

Upon talking to different people in the class, finally, one student spoke up and told that when they were entering the class, they had seen the jealous girl near her bag. Immediately, my owner had approached and confronted her about the situation.

Even then, the jealous girl denied and shamed my owner for falsely accusing her. When asked if her pencil box could be checked just to be sure, she denied. But after speaking to her class teacher, she got the girl to open her pencil box and finally found me. We were reunited after a long time and the girl who kidnapped me was told off and punished for being dishonest and behaving like a thief.

After a few days, once again I and my owner fell into our daily routine. The only difference being this time around, both of us were grateful for each other.

Does using 'pen' as a verb unambiguously mean that what is written was written with a pen?

I am rewriting an employee handbook. I have a goal of making the handbook more understandable. In some cases this means I have to put more ideas than what the previous handbook has, because the previous handbook was ambiguous (or sometimes it didn't even explain something that we have treated as a rule anyway).

However, putting new ideas means putting more words. Putting more words can slowly deteriorate understanding (people can only pay attention for so long).

In an effort to be more concise, I considered changing the sentence "Please sign your name legibly and in pen" to "Please legibly pen your signature."

In retrospect, I realize that this probably won't make things much more understandable, but I still wonder: If I say someone should pen their signature, does that unambiguously mean that they should use a pen?

I would avoid using the word pen as a verb in contracts and official documents. More often than not, to “pen something” means to create, to write, or be the author of. To tell someone to ‘pen’ a signature would suggest that they compose it.

Below is a list of the most common collocations with the verb pen used transitively

The first two instructions are typically used in paper-based exams (also called pen and paper exams ) and for filling out forms.

Examples 3 and 4 are commonly used in forms or contracts. Common sense dictates that it is preferable for the signee to use a pen with indelible ink.

Writing one's name in pencil should be best avoided because it is easy to smudge or erase but it is legally binding nevertheless.

I've provided definitions for "pen" as a verb (which YOU should have provided! That's OK, you'll know for next time).

If you're asking whether the verb "to pen" can include using a pencil, then the answer is clearly yes, as shown by the dictionary definitions below.

To write or compose: penned a letter. American Heritage Dictionary (tr) to write or compose Collins English Dictionary Write or compose. Oxford Living Dictionaries write, indite * pen a letter Merriam-Webster Dictionary 14. to write with or as with a pen; put down in writing: to pen an essay. 15. to draw with or as with a pen: to pen a sketch. dictionary.com 7. to write or draw with or as if with a pen: to pen an essay. Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary

So the only definitions here that explicitly mention using a pen in the verb definition of "pen" are the last two. And they don't require a pen, they're written in terms of "with or as if with a pen" or "with or as with a pen".

Merriam-Webster defines the verb as to "write". And I don't think it's controversial that you can write your name using a pencil.

I personally wouldn't use your phrasing of "pen your signature". Have you ever gone to fill out a form before stopping yourself and wondering "I wonder if both pen and pencil are acceptable." The verb "pen" to specifically mean using an actual pen most likely IS ambiguous. Take the following examples:

"Previously unpublished letters penned by struggle hero, Nelson Mandela, primarily during his 18-year imprisonment..." Link

If you hand someone a form and a pen and say "pen your name" or pen something else, then it's more obvious you want them to use a pen, more specifically the pen you gave them. But it's better to avoid this phrase in my opinion. "To pen" is often used in place of the more ordinary "write" maybe in an attempt to sound more creative because "write" is seen as common and prosaic. Also "To pen your signature", I'm not sure about that. Wouldn't you rather be more clear and say something like "Please sign your name" or "Please write/provide your signature."?

The alternative in your question:

"Please sign your name legibly and in pen."

Leaving apart the fact that, as jlovegren pointed out, signatures are often illegible (intentionally or unintentionally), the last part of the request specifically states your desire that they write their name/signature in pen.

So yes, it is very often ambiguous.

Now to your question ... it does not have to be a pen, but here in the 21st century it is likely (I will not venture in bluetooth transmission of a digital signature).

My sense is to use "Please pen your signature" is understood and somewhat quaint. In AmE it would be more like sign here . As for legibility, a print your name here line would also be included.

My college essay was about fountain pens, and it got me into my dream school.

Hey all, I've just been informed that I got accepted into my top choice school, Kenyon College, and the letter I received mentioned that my application essay was significant in finalizing the decision. Well, the title tells you what the essay is about, and I figured that if my ode to antiquated stationery was good enough for an admissions official, it's good enough to share with the community which inspired my love of fountain pens. So, here it is, friends!

The nib and feed are stuck, and from the looks of it, they’re stuck at a bad angle. Getting them out with brute force could crack the section and ruin the pen for good. I soak the top of the pen in hot water. Clouds of once-dried ink leak out of the filling hole and the seam where nib meets pen. The ebonite feed has also softened up. Indian-made pens often have ebonite feeds, even though most manufacturers have switched to plastic. Soft feed, no more dried ink, and the nib and feed slip out of the section like wet soap from a hand. A quick ninety minutes are spent cleaning out the barrel, the nib and feed are reset, and - at long last - the fountain pen is filled with ink. Finally, I get to write.

Any member of the fountain pen community (Do not underestimate us! Our subreddit is 171,000 members strong!) will tell you this: every pen is unique. That means that one experiences one’s own individuality in a poignant and irreplicable way when writing with any given fountain pen. It’s in seeing a wet line of ink dry on the page. It’s in hearing the metallic scrape of a nib on paper (and no two pens sound the same). It’s in the subtle variations of line width, which even relatively stiff fountain pen nibs can offer, and in seeing how the appearance of your writing changes with every new pen you ink up. Loving the act of writing, whether I’m spilling my deepest thoughts into my journal or just taking notes - just loving the fact that I’m writing something by hand - is a really special experience. It’s an experience I never really knew until I got my hands on a fountain pen.

It’s an experience that has largely been lost.

Popular pen-tuber, David Parker (better known by his YouTube alias “Figboot on Pens”), had the opportunity in 2017 to interview Neil deGrasse Tyson who, as it turns out, is himself a bit of a fountain pen fan. In the interview, Neil laments the loss of “the ability to be expressive when putting word to page.” I know what he means. In the new world, writing the letter “t” is just pressing a button. You don’t practice it. You don’t decide how swirly you want the cross on the “t” to be, and you don’t have to work to get it just right. More likely than not, you don’t even love it. You just press a button, and there’s “t.”

An impulse exists within the fountain pen community to resent the word processor, and even the oil-based ink of the ballpoint pen, for how they have taken the fun out of writing. I don’t bear that resentment. The truth is that writing with fountain pens is a pain. They’re high maintenance, at best. You don’t have to meticulously clean a ballpoint, or worry about whether you’re pressing too hard. You’ll never spend 30 minutes gazing at the tip of a Bic through a jeweler's loupe, then carefully adjusting it by hand. Getting a fountain pen to work the way you want it to can be infuriating, not to mention the broad advantages of rapid, typed correspondence having replaced the written letter. Instant communication with people all over the world, and you don’t even need to worry about if your handwriting is legible. It’s not as if I’d reverse that.

But there is something to be said for high-maintenance writing - writing which is necessarily intimate, individual, and earned. After spending two hours cleaning and adjusting a pen - cultivating its potential for greatness, as I hope to cultivate my own, I get the profound experience of watching hard work pay off. Laying down a smooth, wet line with a pen which was scratchy and dry, I swear I see myself in that line.

Photo essay: in case of emergency, portraits of a haunting and beautiful polar world.

I joined an expedition to South Georgia island, a remote and ecologically vulnerable place, with camera in hand. This is what I saw.

In October of 2023, I was one of 22 “Inspiring Explorers” who ventured to remote South Georgia, a sub-antarctic island, as part of the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Inspiring Explorer programme, with support from Royal Society Te Apārangi and Te Ratonga Tirorangi MetService . The expedition connects young people with the spirit of exploration, encourages them to explore the world, and creates ambassadors for the Trust’s work to conserve the historic explorer bases of Scott, Shackleton, and Sir Edmund Hillary.

In this photo series, I’ll takes you along for the ~9,000km ride.

It feels dystopian to stare through a camera viewfinder with so much life right in front of me, particularly when such sights of bountiful biodiversity are increasingly rare. We can all relate to being inhibited by technology in places deserving of our undivided attention, and South Georgia is definitely one of them.

This incredible opportunity comes with a responsibility to tether the feelings, sights, and lessons from South Georgia to our communities back in Aotearoa. While many have looked through the lens of a camera, not everyone has a chance to stare into a penguin’s eyes or witness a towering iceberg in person. Everyone deserves the opportunity to connect with the raw state of climate and biodiversity through more than graphs, politically charged narratives, and dissociating discourse.

Officially, I’m part of the video outreach team on this expedition, and yet the allure of photography has already taken over. At the push of a button, physical moments are frozen and packaged up for more people to connect with, contemplate, and interpret from afar. While robbing it of the dynamism video content allows, the stillness of a photograph leaves space for our minds to seek possibility beyond a predefined reality. When it comes to exploring themes of hope and fear in the climate and biodiversity crises, this space is a welcome and necessary respite.

This is my personal lens on South Georgia, a place that continues to teach me about our inextricable connections to the polar world and to one another. Themes of hope and fear naturally emerge from her shores, mountains, species, and explorers.

Pick a Side

Our first landing on this remote island introduces us to two penguins poetically posing in parallel. Their contrasting postures make me think of the choice each of us has: to proactively look forward through a life of action (left) or bury our heads in the sand and opt for one of ignorance (right). A choice not offered to all.

Fog and Mirrors

It can be quite overwhelming to make sense of our place and responsibilities in the world amidst compounding crises. The waters between individual and collective action have been fogged by those with vested interests in keeping them separate. The former is lonely and less effective, keeping the cogs turning in an unviable and inequitable system. The latter is filled with hope and the building blocks for everything we need to turn this ship around and head for calmer waters (10 metre swells are not for everyone, as many on our expedition came to realise).

Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt

I will not exhaust the details and severity of climate change or biodiversity loss because we have known enough to warrant immediate action for a long time. We are approaching our 29th year of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP). Three decades of conversations later, and our relationship with nature (including one another) remains in desperate need of a fundamental paradigm shift.

Many quotidian things in life humble us. Sprinting after the bus you missed, your friend spontaneously smashing out a marathon, or dying on a hill for an argument you realise midway through you’re definitely on the wrong side of. Then, there are the more philosophical examples presented by species and places that make us feel insignificant, like the random assortment of atoms and cells that we are.

In a world where we have perilously positioned ourselves at the centre point, seeking true perspective is one of the most important things we can do. It is a paradox that we are individually so small and yet collectively so large. This is where our power and pitfalls exist in curious conflict; like red flags plonked into an ethereal landscape.

Comedy of the Commons

In the late 1900s, the Comedy of the Commons posed the question of what would happen if we contributed knowledge to the good of the community more than we extracted “resources” for ourselves. Humans played the ultimate role in last century’s wide-scale depletion of species in South Georgia in a classic case of the Tragedy of the Commons (over-exploitation of a common “resource”). Only when the local whaling industry became economically unviable did humans cease hunting in South Georgia. But we don’t always have to wait for this exploitative and reactive inevitability.

On the flip side, we are now playing a role in the epic comeback of such species through predator-free initiatives, ongoing scientific monitoring, and storytelling for the public good. There is no immediate economic gain from its protection (except for the likes of visiting tourism operations), suggesting humans have reshaped our relationship with nature here to be one of contribution more than extraction.

This slice of a rookery provides a glimpse into an abundant future that is possible. To witness hundreds of thousands of animals such as King Penguins, Southern Elephant Seals, and Giant Petrels, existing in their chaotic beachside CBD with unfamiliar (and sometimes brutal) etiquette reminds me that community is more than the mere ability to co-exist. It is about compromise, connection, and collaboration over a shared goal; in this case, survival.

Three Wise Pen(guins)

As these three king penguins approach me and assume their self-initiated photoshoot positions, I wonder what they would say if I could follow up with an interview. They provided the pose, but interpreting their dialogue is up to us.

Melting Man

The final resting place of a personified iceberg. This was once part of Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf before calving into iceberg A76A, the largest in the world at the time, measuring 135 km by 25 km (Just under the size of South Georgia at 165 km by 35 km). Three years later, its components sit stagnant in these waters; perhaps this one is contemplating what else it could have done to prevent its own peril?

A fellow explorer retrieves a small piece of detached ice to take back to the boat for closer inspection. Our feelings of loss and grief are quickly challenged by the presence of abundant microscopic life existing in its form. Even in their dying days, such pieces of Antarctica still bring offerings of new life.

Day in the Life

To be taken seriously by the locals, our fragile human bodies are covered head-to-toe in anthropocentric innovation. Sub-zero clothing has to compensate for our lack of evolutionary prowess in this environment that is intolerant of anything less. Settling for mimicry, I try to imagine an elephant seal perched at an office job for some reassurance that every species has its limits.

Yin & Yang

I witness several penguins waddling past their decomposing peers with aloof ease, something that is a far cry from my Western-instilled discomfort at an open casket funeral, yet eerily similar to the unsettling human capacity for compartmentalising in times of crisis.

The intricate details of this sleeping penguin mirror the mix of complementary and contrasting feelings that form our perspectives. We can’t ignore our well-warranted fears, but they must be paired with hopeful possibilities. When one is out of balance, as it was for me before this expedition, paralysis may keep us stuck in a perpetual cycle of fear. A monochromatic penguin just doesn’t fit here, and neither do climate doomers or fatal optimists.

Rusted Ranges

Pieces of the past sit stagnant and dismantled in stark contrast to the blubbery bursts of life that regenerated populations of seals and penguins present. How can we courageously venture away from the comforts of our present reality, and toward the confronting chaos of change, just as generations prior have done?

We witness remnants of human exploitation littering the mountainous shores of South Georgia through whale vertebrae and rusting whale processing stations. Grytviken Historic Whaling Station sits as a reminder of the 53,000 whales that were processed at this very location between 1904 and 1965 by British, Norwegian, Argentinian, and Japanese companies. Whales were so prevalent during the first season that their hunters didn’t even have to leave the bay where we anchored to kill them. There are fleeting sights of these ancient beings during our journey, but a far cry from what our ancestors must have witnessed.

Far from Disappointment

While slowly making our way through Drygalski Fjord, we see glaciers creeping into the waters below. Encapsulated by remarkable feats of nature, we are positioned in a perfect pocket for pondering. Nearby sits Cape Disappointment, inappropriately named by Captain James Cook in 1775 as he realised the island was not another continent to colonise (a failure many may wish had been replicated elsewhere).

South Georgia was casually claimed by Cook and the British until formal enforcement almost 70 years later, and has been officially recognised as disputed territory since 1927. Geographically nearby, Argentina remains steadfast in its political intention to recover the Islas Malvinas/ Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands from the British following attempts in the 1982 war.

It’s easy to get caught up in the big stuff, but these feathers reaching from within the ice encourage me to stop for a closer look. Pieces of our collective form the claws with which we might climb out of crises, and it’s a great reminder to look for a way out in even the most unsuspecting of places.

Survival Sleep

Lurking Below

Sailing through icebergs, it’s clear that a lot that lurks below the surface here. Much of the island’s biodiversity is hidden from the human eye, and not everything needs to be witnessed to be worthy of our consideration.

Here, a scientific instrument is deployed to assist our Te Ratonga Tirorangi MetService Science team gather oceanographic data. Such data is only as useful as its application, which is why pairing such scientific understanding with artistic outreach is so important for real-world influence.

Window to the Wise

During the expedition, we dodge sleeping seals, stand beneath the flight of pintail duck flocks, wait patiently to cross penguin highways, and witness cracks forming in architectural ancient ice. We oscillate through time and contemplate what the future of exploration requires of us 100 years on from Ernest Shackleton’s death.

Now I’m settled back home in Aotearoa, High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza has begun to claim its first victims in South Georgia and Antarctica. New Zealand is one of the last places in the world to remain free from HPAI, but our beloved feathered friends will not be immune forever. With a few human cases of HPAI emerging, perhaps neither will we.

A Covid-19 response lecture during our journey from expedition special guest and patron of Antarctic Heritage Trust, former prime minister Helen Clark, spoke to the importance of proactive, collaborative responses in times of crisis. It also emphasised the need to focus on building social cohesion. It is a humbling reminder of the intersecting roles of politics, science, and civil society in securing a future for those to come.

Philly Girls Jump lit up the crowd outside of the Mann Center with their double dutch performance.

“It’s a celebration of culture and Black excellence, and double dutch is intertwined in the cultural fabric of Philadelphia,” said performer Tanisha Rinehardt.

Rinehardt said double dutch is “that nostalgic thing that draws people together.”

“Our mission is to not only empower the spirit of fun and joy, but to also build community,” Rinehardt said. “It’s a culmination of Black excellence. It’s a celebration of our freedom and celebration and homage to our ancestors, and we’re here just participating in the best way we know how — with our ropes.”
