About the author

Kai Bird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer. His new book is The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames. A biography of a CIA officer, The Good Spy was released on May 20, 2014 by Crown/Random House. Kai's last book was a memoir about the Middle East entitled Crossing Mandelbaum Gate: Coming of Age Between the Arabs and Israelis, 1956-1978 (Scribner, April 27, 2010). It was a 2011 Finalist in the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography. He is the co-author with Martin J. Sherwin of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), which also won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography and the Duff Cooper Prize for History in London. He wrote The Chairman: John J. McCloy, the Making of the American Establishment (1992) and The Color of Truth: McGeorge Bundy & William Bundy, Brothers in Arms (1998). He is also co-editor with Lawrence Lifschultz of Hiroshima's Shadow: Writings on the Denial of History and the Smithsonian Controversy (1998). He is the recipient of fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Alicia Patterson Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's writing fellowship, the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, the Rockefeller Foundation's Study Center, Bellagio, Italy and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC. He is a member of the Society of American Historians and a contributing editor of The Nation. He lives in Miami Beach.

Martin Sherwin was hardly your classic blocked writer. Outgoing, funny, and athletic, he is described by those who knew him as the opposite of neurotic.

But by the late 1990s, he had to admit he was stuck. Sherwin, a history professor and the author of one previous book, had agreed to write a full-scale biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer two decades earlier. Now he wondered if he would ever finish it. He’d done plenty of research — an extraordinary amount, actually, amassing some 50,000 pages of interviews, transcripts, letters, diaries, declassified documents and F.B.I. dossiers, stored in seemingly endless boxes in his basement, attic and office. But he’d barely written a word.

Sherwin had originally tried to turn the project down, his wife remembered, telling his editor, Angus Cameron, that he didn’t think he was seasoned enough to take on such a consequential subject as Oppenheimer, the so-called father of the atomic bomb. But Cameron, who had published Sherwin’s first book at Knopf — and who, like Oppenheimer, had been a victim of McCarthyism — insisted.

So on March 13, 1980, Sherwin signed a $70,000 contract with Knopf for the project. Paid half to get started, he expected to finish it in five years.

In the end, the book took 25 years to write — and Sherwin didn’t do it alone.

When Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” is released on July 21, it will be the first time many younger Americans encounter the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. But that film stands on the shoulders of the exhaustive and exhilarating 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning biography called “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” co-written by Sherwin and Kai Bird.

Start with the book that Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is based on: Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's American Prometheus , which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. There was one scene that hooked Nolan, the director told the Los Angeles Times : "Los Alamos, this place that will always live in history or infamy, was first a place where Oppenheimer and his brother loved to go camping. Suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, I’m looking at the most personal possible connection between a character and a massive change to the world that couldn’t be undone." This is the definitive Oppenheimer biography.

The Making of the Atomic Bomb

Richard Rhodes's The Making of the Atomic Bomb , which also won the Pulitzer Prize, sets out to tell the definitive history of nuclear weapons. If you're curious about who lived in the secret city of Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, 109 East Palace is for you. Author Jennet Conant's grandfather James B. Conant, a chemist, was involved in the project, giving her unique insight into the lives of those in Los Alamos. She does not focus on what she calls the "saga of scientific discovery," instead choosing to turn her attention to the personal lives of the key personnel of the Manhattan Project.

What happened to Oppenheimer after World War II? Priscilla J. McMillan's book focuses on 1949 to 1955, and the trial of Oppenheimer when he was charged with violating national security. As McMillan writes in the introduction, "Oppenheimer's foes used deceit and treachery to humiliate and banish him from public service...His legacy as a public servant willing to raise his voice in dissent is even more significant and inspiring now than it was then."

The First Atomic Bomb: The Trinity Site in New Mexico (America’s Public Lands)

The test of the atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert, three weeks before the bombing of Hiroshima, took place on what is now called the "Trinity Site." One day a year, it is open to the public. Author Janet Farrell Brodie focuses on the place and environment that "carries special historical weight in American memory."

General Leslie Groves was the man who hired Oppenheimer, planned the Los Alamos facilities, and in essence, made the Manhattan Project possible. (Matt Damon plays Groves in Oppenheimer ). Oppenheimer was the big winner at the 2024 Golden Globes , taking home five wins, including Best Picture (Drama). The highly-anticipated film, directed by Christopher Nolan , revolves around the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man known as “the godfather of the atomic bomb.”
