Differences between Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education

windows 10 education

Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 on July 29t, 2015 , allowing users to update to Windows 10 for free if using a computer that runs Windows 7 or later. Customers could also buy a new PC with Windows 10 pre-installed, or buy a boxed (or downloadable) copy of Microsoft’s latest operating system for PCs.

But there’s not just be one version of Windows 10 for PCs. At launch, there were four: Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education.

And in 2017, Microsoft complicated things further with the introduction of  Windows 10 S . If you scroll down to the bottom of this article, you’ll find a table that shows the differences between Windows 10 S, Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions .

w10 features

Microsoft had already provided a rough outline of the differences between these versions. Now that July 29th is fast approaching, the company is providing more details about what makes one version of Windows 10 different from another.

All four feature the new Windows Start Menu and Edge web browser, Cortana personal assistant software, support for new security features including facial and fingerprint recognition, virtual desktop support, and continuum mode for seamlessly transitioning from PC to tablet mode when you detach a keyboard from a tablet.

Things look a little different when you check out the business features. Windows 10 Home doesn’t support BitLocker encryption, Windows Remote Desktop, Group Policy Management, Enterprise Data Protection, or some other features that require Windows 10 Pro or higher.

Meanwhile Enterprise users get some features that aren’t available for Windows 10 Pro, including AppLocker, Windows To Go Creator, Credential Guard, and Device Guard.

For the most part Windows 10 Education is the same as Windows 10 Enterprise… it’s just meant for use in a school environment rather than a business.

One feature that’s  only available to Windows 10 Enterprise uses is “Long Term Servicing Branch,” which basically means that enterprise customers can postpone Windows updates that provide new features for years, while continuing to receive security updates.

While upgrading to Windows 10 will net you some new features, you’ll also lose some things that were available in earlier versions of Windows. Native support for DVD playback is no longer supported, but you’ll be able to install third-party video players that can handle it. Windows Media Center isn’t available for Windows 10.

Just use the kms windows loader ez activation. iso’s are all around the internet use WintoUSB to make a “live” bootable cd or to external usb 3.0 drive… easy peasy.

1. year later…

Yes… I think that is perfectly legal, as far as I know, with Windows 10 you are paying Microsoft by letting them take your data and make profit of it, and that includes any product Google (and any other data gathering company) had has or will create as well…

//My opinion

I don’t know if anyone is checking this thread, but I have tested pro, enterprise vanilla and enterprise LTSB with an eye toward functionality and privacy. The only choice is Enterprise LTSB. With it I can really control the user experience and also meet HIPAA requirements, making it good to go for particular work environments. Free clouds and a free OS will get you just what you pay for, in terms of security.

Also, windows 10 home will force install all windows updates e.g. drivers and you won’t be able to hide them like you can in Windows <10. Pro will let users do some customization in Windows update, although not clear how much. But I definitely won't update my laptop with windows 8.1 bing.

I thought we were done with the different versions. Did anyone ever actually upgraded from Windows whatever home to pro? It’s like a winrar licence, fabled only in the legends from the days of yore…

Yes, I upgraded from 7 home to 8 pro as part of the offer when 8 was first released, meant I switched to the pro version for a fraction of the price.

As for why they have two versions, it’s basic price segmentation. Get more money from people willing to pay, without losing sales from people who aren’t.

The Enterprise LTSB is basically a slap in the face to users. It exists because of the obvious hazards of Microsoft’s “Windows 10 Forever” policy of mandatory mutation which Enterprise customers seem to have successfully pushed back on. I’m not sure why ISVs have not gotten together to push back on behalf of everyone else, since they have even more at risk in the chaos that rolling mutation will engender – even more so if “more equal than other animals” Enterprise customers can opt out of this wanton mutation.

Maybe, but rolling mutations hasn’t seemed to hurt Apple any all these years and with MS pushing Universal apps going forward the ISVs may have a lot less to worry about going forward unless they don’t take advantage of those changes…

Enterprise setups can be very different from average users, though, and they’re more likely to run into software issues because many of them use custom in-house made software and have to provide their own support, which is harder to justify than a 3rd party who can potentially serve millions of users and not just one company…

While those so called mutations include fixing the OS and making the experience better over time… Take Apple for example, you can hardly say the original release version of OSX is as good as the latest version, and things like better security was added in over the years… as well as new features to keep the OS up to date…

Enterprise users can get away with things regular people can’t because of the custom set ups they often use and can do things like isolate their networks from the outside world but that isn’t really practical for the average user, who in turn have more to worry about from newer threats, etc. and thus better served by keeping up to date…

Simple patches that don’t change how the system works still leaves vulnerabilities that can be exploited… While minimizing the support MS needs to provide leaves them more resources to continue to improve the OS and provide better services…

So, I’d hardly consider it all doom and gloom going forward… but as always, we’ll see how it plays out…

At least the new way they’re doing things also means they can always make additional changes later if it turns out to not be working well as it is setup now…

“Universal” apps is just a new candy-coating name for WinRT apps and very little more. Just as nobody built them in the past, nobody is going to build them in the future. The sandboxing makes them useless except as fart apps or thin clients (for which we already have web browsers). The “mutation” I refer to is what replaces the new Windows versions we got in the past and could move to in a controlled manner. And for that matter things are far from joyful over in OS X land either, to the point where many ISVs have abandoned the platform.

The mutation is just the normal updating of the OS that we normally had to wait for a new release for… Something multiple other software has already adopted…

Like Firefox Brower, Chrome, etc…

And no, the issues with OSX deal with how Apple strictly controls it and policy of planned obsolescence with no backwards compatability…

Windows will continue to provide legacy support…

While sand boxing isn’t a crippling factor as long as the developers aren’t locked out like they were with WinRT…

For example most GNU/Linux distros already have that feature…

And Universal apps are a bit more than just WinRT apps anymore… Besides, Windows needs to be more secure and this does that…

So I still need Pro to get remote desktop. MS’ RDP protocol is still the best remote desktop I’ve used.

Hmm no remote desktop in the home version. DOes that mean I will no longer be able to use remote desktop (Win7 Home atm) i wonder. :S

Maybe, like WMC they could be removing things that aren’t used by the majority of people, or more likely in this case it could just be a difference between a basic app and the more advance version… Like the difference between Notepad/Wordpad and MS Word… It could still be in there but never mentioned and they only list the Pro versions in the chart…

In previous versions of Windows, the home editions could connect to other PCs via RDP, but could not be connected to. I believe that is what this chart is saying.

That makes sense. Thanks. 🙂

I,m glad about that. I don’t like people rummaging about at the bottom of my drawers , Puts the porn stash at risk

For all intents, it looks like we could consider Enterprise and Education as the same thing — let’s call it “Windows 10 E”.

They should just merge Pro and E together anyway, but there is probably a maze of licensing voodoo that helps Microsoft maximize profits.

I’m guessing education is probably free, or sold at an extreme discount.

turned out to be free to students, at lest for my school. I don’t know if i should upgrade from Pro, though. I’m afraid of losing the license once I graduate, or not being eligible for an upgrade to the next Windows.

I am also worried about it expiring after I graduate. I need Windows 10 but 99 dollars for home is pretty steep.

The free licence for students is lifetime. No expiration!

No maze, just a simple difference in users needs and scaled pricing so they don’t have to charge even more for the Pro version for people who don’t need the full Enterprise version… which also needs more supports, is likely the version that will be offered subscription pay for services for extra support, etc.

The “Long Term Servicing Branch,” also means MS will have to devote more of its resources to supporting Enterprise users who opt out of keeping up with changes to the OS… Keep in mind that such features do cost MS money and other resources as they can’t minimize support to just what is standard at any given time with this policy in effect…

It’s just not everyone’s needs fall into such specific sets but the alternative would have been for MS to provide even more different versions and confuse people even more… as well as make supporting it all harder on MS…

But yeah, the idea is also to maximize profits as that is what businesses do who want to stay in business…

So all that ‘things are different in Redmond’ hype isn’t completely true then. A lot of old Microsoft thinking here. And poor thinking at that.

a winning horse never changes into a donkey .. or so they say.

When there is only one donkey on the track, it always wins – but it’s still just a stinkin’ donkey.

No bitlocker for home sucks. This should be a standard security feature for everyone. And no branch cache in Pro will mean that tech isn’t going to get adopted by the mid-market any time soon.

There’s always DFS – branchcache won’t make or break the sale, I think.

You still get device encryption no matter what version you get…

There’s also basic apps and services that aren’t listed in the chart, and they haven’t stated whether or not there would be any exceptions like they did for tablets for W8…

Marriage equality is victorious – good times for all, except old homophobes.

Windows 10 Education Features

Windows 10 Education is made for schools and small organizations to make teaching and testing easier. Here’s what it features:

Education Specific Settings

One of the most significant differences between Windows 10 Education vs Home is its education-specific features. For instance, Windows 10 Education lets you set up school PCs using dedicated apps. This streamlines the process of a centralized school PC network, something that many newbies struggle with.

In addition, Windows 10 Education features the Take a Test software. This is a digital assessment tool that helps you take tests on PCs. And that’s not all. Windows 10 Education also features faster login among shared devices. So, there is no lag in the school computer network.

The result is a streamlined learning environment that doesn’t require an IT expert and is extremely easy to navigate. Windows 10 Education is teacher-oriented, meaning you always have complete control of what is being accessed on the computers.

AppLocker

Microsoft Windows 10 Education has another feature missing from the Windows 10 Home: the AppLocker. The AppLocker allows you to block out any harmful content, games or other unnecessary apps. This helps the students focus on the work at hand instead of wasting time on distracting apps. Additionally, it adds parental control on what the children are exposed to online.

Cost Benefits

Windows 10 Education is significantly cheaper than the Home version since it’s made for larger organizations. This encourages schools and colleges to go digital and promote computer learning among young students.

Windows 10 Education is also cost-effective for students who can’t afford Windows Pro or Home. They can simply access the computers at their school or college with ease.

BranchCache

A feature shared between Windows Server and Windows 10 Education; BranchCache is another unique feature of this OS. How this works is a bit complicated, so let’s break it down.

Let’s say you have an organization that has multiple branch offices. And each branch office has multiple computers that must access certain files every day. Additionally, your computer can store something called cache, which allows you to fetch data faster.

Instead of caching the files onto the main computer, BranchCache lets you cache the files to your branch computers. This means that the workers or students in one branch can easily access information without contacting the main computer.

Security Features

Windows 10 Education has many security features that will help you keep the school computers safe from hacking. The Education version has two new features aside from the regular security features included in the Windows 10 Home Edition.

The first feature is credential protection. This means that only authorized personnel can handle certain files in simpler terms. So not everyone has admin rights. And the admins can choose who logs in by isolating single sign-in users.

The second feature is endpoint detection and response. This feature monitors all the behaviors of the Education accounts. This lets you use analytics and machine learning to identify possible threats. It’s a great feature that aids in the investigation of malicious attempts.

Here’s a summary video on the features of Windows 10 Education:

Windows 10 Home Features

Windows 10 Home is Microsoft’s proprietary OS for carrying out daily productivity tasks in your home and office. Here are its features:

Windows 10 Home provides you with an ample amount of security features for your home and office computers. It’s pretty sufficient considering the average user’s security needs.

To summarize, Windows 10 Home features firewall and network protection by default. Through this, you can keep yourself safe from malicious brute force attacks. Additionally, Windows 10 Home provides safety from ransomware. This means that your data and files will remain secure.

What’s more, Windows 10 Home offers device encryption. It creates an additional layer of protection to keep all your information secure. Additionally, this Windows version comes with the Windows Defender antivirus .

And that’s not all. Windows 10 Home also features Parental Controls to let you control your children’s access to the internet.

Cortana

Windows 10 Home has one prominent feature that some other Windows 10 lack: Cortana. Cortana is Windows’s take on a voice-activated digital assistant. It works more like Google Assistant or Siri. Cortana will help you get through the day with any form of productivity.

And it’s coupled with other productivity apps such as Mail, Photos, Calendar, and your browser. Additionally, Cortana can make phone calls and emails for you. But you must have your phone connected to your computer for this to happen.

Unfortunately, you can’t get Cortana in Windows 10 Education. It’s a feature that was removed by default to make the OS education-specific.

Continuum Feature for Tablets

Windows 10 Home has a special Continuum made for tablets and phones. In case you don’t know, Continuum is a feature that lets you change the device’s interface based on the size and shape of your device.

So, for instance, let’s say you have a 2-in-1 device that can be converted from a tablet to a laptop. With a tablet, you would be using the on-screen keyboard. But as soon as you turn it into a laptop by connecting the keyboard, your screen dimensions will automatically change. This is what Continuum does. It ensures your user interface is always the proper orientation and dimension, no matter what type of device you have.

Gaming

One of the key differences between the Windows 10 Home and Education is that the Home version supports gaming. It comes with advanced APIs that help max out the performance of your computer during gaming. Additionally, Windows 10 Home features the new DirectX 12 Ultimate. This is an amalgamation of the best graphics technologies found in PCs. There’s also DirectX Raytracing, which allows your computer to render realistic lighting. It’s also crucial for rendering reflections and shadows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is windows 10 education better .

Windows 10 Education is highly recommended if you are the IT manager or director at a school or organization. This OS is extremely easy to use and is better for managing multiple shared computers. It features BranchCache and high-level encryption.

What are the disadvantages of Windows 10 education

Windows 10 Education doesn’t feature Cortana, which helps you with productivity throughout the day. Additionally, Windows 10 Education is not made for gaming. Yes, you can play some games on it. But it’s primarily made for professional use in schools and colleges.

Can Windows 10 education be converted to home?

Yes, you can upgrade your Windows 10 Home to Education via the Windows 10 Pro Education product key. All you need is the product key of your Windows 10, and it can be easily converted to the Windows 10 Education version and vice versa. This lets you choose the type of OS you want and allows for easy conversion between the two.

Conclusion

Finding the right operating system for your specific use case is hopefully easier now that you know the differences and similarities between these two OS. But if you were confused between Windows 10 Home and Education, we hope everything is clear now.

To summarize, Windows 10 Education is made for schools, colleges, and universities to help with assessments and sharing. And the Windows 10 Home version is best for personal use, such as gaming and working. Plus, it features Cortana to help you get through the day.

Lastly, whichever OS you choose, make sure it fits your needs. I hope you now know the difference between Windows 10 Education vs Home. If you have any questions, remember to leave us a comment below.

Challenges in Using Windows 10 Devices for Education

While using Windows 10 drives in great benefits for educators and students, the use of digital devices in classrooms can also bring in a few challenges, such as:

  • Use of entertainment apps causing distractions
  • Accessing non-educational, inappropriate websites and content
  • Risk of misusing the computer for non-educational purposes
  • Breach of student’s personal developmental data
  • Unauthorized access to the computer after school hours
  • Inability to privately distribute mission-specific apps
  • Manually monitoring the performance of the devices, updating systems whenever needed
  • Manually troubleshooting errors on the computer
  • Controlling the device operations centrally, without impacting user experience

To mitigate these challenges, it is important to apply school-level usage policies on the Windows 10 laptops and desktops used in education. Effective management of large device inventories creates a subsequent load on the school’s IT team and hence, an MDM solution for education plays well to mitigate these challenges while leveraging the true capabilities of Windows 10 devices.

Windows 10 Pro vs Windows 10 Home: All the differences explained

Plus Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 IoT, Windows 10 in S mode and Windows 10 Education…

windows 10 education

When you count all the different ways Windows 10 will be available, there are actually ten editions: Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, Enterprise LTSC, Education, Pro Education, Windows 10 in S mode, IOT and Team, leaving you with lots of choice.

The various options break down into device or situation specific in order to suit the needs of the user, business or education system. Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise and Education are the main editions with all the bells and whistles Microsoft has to offer but there are more stripped out versions that offer benefits too.

  • 20 smart new and improved features in Windows 10

Windows 10 in S mode is one of the newer addition types which is designed to offer a more lightweight version of the OS for the most efficient performance. As such this feature-limited Windows 10 is ideal for affordable devices used in situations like education. This also works well as a less process intensive platform for older hardware and mobile devices like tablet computers.

So there are lots of versions to pick from and you may be wondering which is best for you, fret not. In this article, we'll go through the exact details of each version.

Windows 10 Home

Windows 10 Home

The version of Windows 10 that you're most likely to get if you buy a new PC, tablet or 2-in-1 is Windows 10 Home, which has the key features of Windows 10 , from the latest Start menu to the Edge browser, to the Windows Hello biometric login feature that uses your face or fingerprint instead of a password, to a now-mandatory Cortana – the voice-controlled assistant.

Windows 10 Home includes game streaming from Xbox One, which lets you play games from your Xbox One on your PC instead. To keep home users more secure, updates like the massive Anniversary Update overhaul from Windows Update, and you don't get the option not to install critical and security updates.

  • How to download and install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Windows 10 Home includes the Continuum feature for tablets. This is the tablet mode that simplifies the taskbar and the Start menu, and makes your apps full screen – you can split your screen between two apps, but this is much simpler than the way Windows 8 .1 let you arrange windows on-screen.

Windows 10 Pro

Windows 10 Pro

If you use your PC for business, Windows 10 Pro has extra features over Windows 10 Home – the most important of which is being able to join a domain, including Azure Active Directory for single sign-on to cloud services (and have group policy applied as part of that).

You also get Hyper-V for virtualisation, BitLocker whole disk encryption, enterprise mode Internet Explorer , Remote Desktop, a version of the Windows Store for your own business, Enterprise Data Protection containers and assigned access (which locks a PC to running only one modern application, to use like a kiosk). Pro users can get updates from Windows Update for Business, which includes options for scheduling updates so they don't reboot PCs at important business times.

There are ways of connecting Windows Home PCs to a server, but if you want the familiar business PC experience, Windows 10 Pro is what you need. It is a free upgrade from the Pro versions of Windows 7 and 8.1 (which includes Windows 7 Ultimate as well as Professional, and Windows 8.1 Pro and Pro for Students), you'll be able to upgrade to it from Windows 10 Home, and some desktops and notebooks designed for business will come with Windows 10 Pro.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

As the name suggests this is Windows 10 Pro at its core but rather than being built for all work scenarios this is specifically tailored to high-end hardware. This is, as Microsoft says, the most powerful Windows yet. That means this supports very intensive tasks and as such works well with the likes of Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron and AMD Epyc processor. You can bolt together up to four CPUs and this will help you take advantage of all of them. You also get support for up to 6TB or RAM, the ReFS file system for safe storage that fights against corruption, Non-Volatile Dual In-line Memory Module and remote direct memory access.

This OS uses fewer CPU cycles meaning you end up with more capacity so you can multitask lots of processes at the same time without costing you on performance. The use of persistent memory support also means this OS will let you access your files even if you shut down the system. The Remote Direct Memory Access means you can transfer files between server, PC and SMB Direct quickly with low latency on network requests.

Windows 10 in S mode

Windows 10 in S mode

Formerly Windows 10 S, now Windows 10 in S mode, this is a feature limited version of Windows 10 that purposely comes with certain elements disabled. As a result this is aimed at more affordable devices, making it ideal for school age education scenarios. The key here is that Windows 10 in S mode only allows for software to be downloaded and installed via the Microsoft Store, making it more secure and safe. This can be unlocked to full Windows 10 but this is permanent and cannot be switched back.

Locked system settings mean the Microsoft Edge browser is the standard using Bing as its search engine. The OS comes with a one-year subscription to Minecraft : Education Edition for free. Windows 10 in S mode could be compared to Chrome OS (which runs on Chromebooks ) in terms of closed system simplicity and safety.

Windows 10 Enterprise

Windows 10 Enterprise

Windows 10 Enterprise has all the business features of Pro, and adds a number of more powerful features designed for larger companies: Direct Access for connecting without a VPN, AppLocker for whitelisting apps, BranchCache for sharing downloads and updates with other PCs using a peer-to-peer connection, and group policy for controlling the Start Screen.

There's also Credential Guard and Device Guard features for protecting Windows logon credentials and locking down which applications a PC can run, and the option of keeping a PC on the Long Term Servicing Branch where it gets only security updates (ideal for systems you need to have working reliably for years without being affected by new and changing Windows features).

The free Windows 10 upgrade doesn't apply to Windows Enterprise; that's because you can only get it with a volume licence (and you have to already have a Windows Pro licence for each PC), and if you have a volume licence you already have the option of Software Assurance, which includes upgrades.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC MRI

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC

This is the Long-Term Service Channel version of Windows 10 Enterprise meaning it's a more long-term support system with a released update scheduled for every two to three years. That gets you security updates for 10 years after its release also.

This edition does not feature the Microsoft Store or any bundled apps. This is aimed at situations where the functionality won't change over long periods of time, so for medical systems like MRI and CAT scanners, industrial process controllers and air traffic control.

Windows 10 Education

Windows 10 Education

Windows 10 Education is a more recent SKU, designed for large academic organisations like universities that want the security, management and connectivity features of Windows 10 Enterprise (it's common for students to need to join the domain to use official printers, for example).

The feature list is almost identical to Windows 10 Enterprise but it doesn't have the Long Term Servicing Branch and instead of having to upgrade from Windows Pro, you can upgrade directly to Windows 10 Education from Windows 10 Home. That means educational establishments can easily make Windows 10 Education available to students bringing in their own PCs.

Windows 10 Pro Education

Windows 10 Pro Education

The idea behind this version of Windows 10 Pro is to offer the Education extras at a discounted rate to those with a K-12 academic licence. So you get most of the Windows 10 Pro features with some options deactivated by default to suit educators. The likes of Cortana, Microsoft Store suggestions and Windows Spotlight are all disabled as standard.

There are also great options that make setup and deployment easier in an educational system. In fact you can set everything up using a USB flash drive thanks to the Set Up School PC app.

Windows 10 IoT

Windows 10 IoT

If you have a Raspberry Pi 2 or an Intel Galileo or a range of other 'maker boards' you can get a free version of Windows 10 for them that can run universal apps. There are also versions of Windows 10 that OEMs can put on more traditional embedded devices like point of sale systems, cash tills, ATMs and other machinery.

This actually breaks down into IOT Core and IOT Enterprise versions with Core aimed at x86, x64 and ARM systems and the Enterprise version only for x86 and x64. The former is for things like digital signage, smart buildings, gateway, HMI, smart home and wearables. Enterprise is more for industry tablets, retail, kiosks, medical devices, manufacturing devices and Thin Client.

Microsoft Surface Hub 2S

Windows 10 Team

This version of Windows 10 is a device specific version of the OS. It is made for the Surface Hub and comes with that as standard. The Surface Hub is a standalone interactive whiteboard with a 55-inch or 84-inch multitouch display aimed at business use.

This OS works with 3D modelling to allow for quick viewing of objects from different perspectives using touch to move. This also supports Skype for Business video conferencing and Microsoft Office for the likes of PowerPoint, Excel, Word and you also get OneNote for on-screen drawing.

Cell phones are an educational opportunity, not a problem.

While cell phones can be distractions, their learning potential is significant.

For those who embrace technology’s potential to improve education, the dream has always been personalized computing, allowing for individual response and initiative to fully engage every student throughout the day. With the technology available today, the dream is finally at hand, yet the tool best suited to enable this dream is the cell phone. Unfortunately, this device also provides for many unwelcome behaviors. Now that Pandora’s box has been opened, what do we do?

One approach that is gaining in popularity is to “just say no.” Approaches range from abstinence and legislative attempts to ban cell phones in the classroom to barrier methods, such as Yondr , which provides bags to sequester the objects during the day.

But is this the best approach? The problem, after all, is not the devices but their misuse. The question that must be answered is how to maintain the significant potential of handheld devices while addressing the legitimate concerns of educators over their downside risks. I sat down with Bill Salak, CTO of Brainly , to discuss this problem.

There Have Always Been Classroom Distractions

Cell phones are not the first time a new distraction has presented itself at school. On the technological side, there has been a steady stream of distractions since at least the mid-1970s: Mattel Electronic Football, the Sony Walkman, watch calculators, and Gameboys. In every case, the threat presented by technology was addressed through school rules and classroom management. With cell phones, it should be the same. Students should not misuse phones during class, not because it is illegal but because it is not good for their learning and violates classroom norms.

Bill Salak notes that this is best solved within the school system using the available tools: “There have always been distractions in the classroom, whether electronic devices, passing notes, or even finger skateboards. There are traditional modes of classroom discipline for addressing such problems. If our teachers do not feel up to the task, we should find ways to provide the necessary training and support them with the necessary policies at the school and district levels.” School administrators must decide what type of community standards will be expected, and teachers must learn how to enforce classroom discipline to uphold those standards.

Today’s NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Saturday, September 21

‘the penguin’ review: gotham gangster goodness with a delightful colin farrell, take care with the latest iphone 16 pro special offers, what exactly are we getting rid off.

When discussing banning cell phones from the classroom, we must be clear on what we are banning. Smartphones are not just phones; banning them is not just banning unwanted calls and social media. In a classroom with ubiquitous devices, the teacher can ask questions that all students must answer. The cameras on cell phones allow for simplified input of complex expressions, providing a gateway to AI educational apps, such as Sizzle or Numerade. Notation has long been a challenge when doing symbolic computation on a computer; the camera eliminates this. The phone can also capture processes. Rather than limiting students to final projects, the phone can capture a presentation, the step-by-step work of a solution, or anything else that is a time-extended process. These are just a few examples of productive ways the technology can be used.

“We need a sharper knife when carving out this problem,” stressed Bill Salak. This is not a legislative matter but an educational one. “We need a conversation among educators on how to train teachers to adequately address this type of problem, be it from cell phones, laptops, or other distractors.”

Distraction As A Sign

The fact that the devices are winning out against the teachers may have something to do with the mode of instruction. Bill Salak surmised that the traditional classroom dates back to the Industrial Revolution to prepare students for industrial life. With the information age now firmly at hand, perhaps we should look for ways to embrace technology rather than avoid it. With the emergence of AI, the need to shift the mode of education from the industrial to the information age becomes ever more pressing. In the years to come, we will see more vigorous competition from the countries that can successfully make that leap.

If education aims to prepare students for the world they will be living in, we should train them in the intelligent use of the tools and methods of modern work. This includes mastering digital devices and knowing how to keep distractions at bay. Odds are that anyone reading this article works in an environment where they regularly use information technology, including hand-held devices. They likely also appreciate the inherent tension between usefulness and distraction in such devices. How much better for this to be learned while at school than discovered later on the job?

Cell phones are the educational tool we have been waiting for. We must develop the mechanism to ensure proper use and derive maximum educational benefit. We do not need to ban, bag, or otherwise throw them away. To paraphrase a classic song about education, “Hey Teacher! Leave those kids their phone.”
